International projects Leeds College of Building are actively involved with international partners to offer both educational and cultural experiences for our students to complement their studies. The projects offer an opportunity to explore new technologies, construction techniques and materials and aim to further inform career choice. The projects have been invaluable in providing students with the confidence to participate in activities in other countries and to share their experiences of studying and working in construction within different cultures, languages and climates. Leeds College of Building have been working in partnership with Berufskolleg Ost der Stadt Essen in Germany for over 20 years. The links forged with them have allowed students from across the College to take part in an international exchange programme and discover how the lifestyles and work ethics differ with students working in a similar discipline.

16 www.lcb.ac.uk | info@lcb.ac.uk | 0113 222 6061

This has also allowed students to visit the industry in the UK and Germany and develop an understanding of the supply chain, manufacturing process and modern methods of construction. New technologies and innovative construction processes have been compared and the knowledge gained has proven key to professional development and further provides invaluable information to make an informed career choice. The reciprocal exchanges between colleges also enable an educated view of the career opportunities available across Europe and allow the colleges, students and employers to forge links. Work placements have been arranged offering work experience to complement their studies which enhance their development leading to employment. The College has also worked with partners in Portugal, Holland, France and Russia.

success stories Gareth Davies Civil Engineering Higher Apprenticeship Gareth is currently studying the Sustainable Built Environment Higher Apprenticeship which includes the HND Diploma CBE (Civil Engineering pathway) and the NVQ 5 Diploma in Construction Management (Sustainability). He currently works for the Jagger Group who are a civil engineering contracting company from Halifax. He completed the Advanced Apprenticeship Civil Engineering Design Technician route with excellent results. Gareth has been an ambassador for the College and presented to the first year students at our launch event, which included employers from the consortium group and college staff. He then went on to work with the groups of new advanced and higher apprentices to inform them of the challenges that are ahead of them with both college work and gathering site-based evidence. His lecturer at College, Vicky Patterson says, “Gareth’s commitment to his studies, college, employer and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is exemplary. He is currently involved with ICE at a local level and is a STEMNET Ambassador. Gareth was one of the first students in the country to complete his Advanced Technical Apprenticeship. His long term goal is to progress onto a BSc/MSc in Civil Engineering at Leeds Beckett University. With time he hopes to become a Chartered Engineer, and we have every confidence that he will achieve his ambitions.” Gareth was selected from hundreds of other Technicians to win the prestigious Jean Venables Medal, which celebrates the best Technician Professional Review Candidate in the country. Only three people were shortlisted for the annual award. Gareth has also been named ‘Outstanding Apprentice of the Year’ at the National BTEC Awards. He attended a parliamentary reception at the House of Commons and then collected his award at a prestigious ceremony at the Royal Horticultural Centre in London.

Nathan Headington HND Diploma in Civil Engineering (Full-time) Nathan initially trained as a tree surgeon and set up his own business but due to the recession and injuries, he decided to change his career and re-train in civil engineering. Nathan enrolled on a Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Construction and was advised to achieve distinctions in every subject so he felt confident about progressing to the HNC/HND Diploma. He even hired a maths tutor to help him brush up on algebra, geometry and calculus. He worked extremely hard and gained distinctions in all of his assignments so he chose to continue studying and enrolled on the full-time HND Diploma in Civil Engineering. Nathan also works full-time as a Site Manager for QTS Group and is working 40 hours a week, including weekends, juggling working and studying. Nathan plans to sit his Professional Review to become a Technician Member of the ICE, and is currently preparing his submission. He has also applied for a part-time degree in Civil Engineering. Nathan has also been awarded the ‘Outstanding Adult Learner of the Year’ title at the National BTEC Awards. His lecturer at College, Vicky Patterson says “Due to Nathan’s amazing work ethic and fantastic communication skills he was the Higher Education Student Representative and is a student member of the ICE. How Loan Repayments Work

24+ Advanced Learning Loans

You do not need to re-pay your loan until you have finished studying and started working, and you do not start to pay back your loan until the April after you graduate.

Anyone aged 24+ and living in the UK* will be able to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan for a level 3 or level 4 course (excluding HNC).

You will begin to pay back your loan once you are earning over the threshold of £21,000 per year.

It’s easy to apply and the loans are not means tested or subject to credit checks. What’s more, the loan goes straight to the College to pay for your fees and you don’t pay anything back until your income is over £21,000 per year.

For example, if your course finishes in June 2016 and you get a job paying £25,000 in September 2016, you start repayments in April 2017.

For more information on Student Loans, please visit www.gov.uk/student-finance/ overview or www.slc.co.uk
