MISSION STATEMENT There is a profound difference between living and life. Living may extend time for another day. But life is far more than sleeping and waking. Life is more than merely existing. And, although it would be easier, life cannot be bought in a pill. That is why Keep a Child Alive buys more than just the pills needed to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. It buys the essential nutrition, shelter, support and education to help ensure those pills are taken properly and effectively. It buys the things we all take for granted, but that make all the difference. A bed. A roof. A ride. A book. A smile. KCA offers children, their families and entire communities a shoulder to lean on and a heart that beats for them. Because KCA believes we can do something far bigger and better than buy the ability to live. We can buy the dignity that is life. We can buy compassion. Buy love. Buy the cure. Buy life. WELCOME TO THE 2011 BLACK BALL
The more I live, the more I learn that there are so many unique people who can inspire big change. One of the first people to come into my life and inform me about the many things happening in the world, and how I can do something about it—was Leigh Blake, co-founder of Keep A Child Alive. I was maybe nineteen years old and I’d never even been out of the country. But learning about the beautiful people of Africa and the hardships they face with the AIDS pandemic, opened my eyes to a whole new world and changed my life.
As Keep A Child Alive expands into supporting the people of India with the devastation they face from the AIDS pandemic, I feel more connected than ever to the fact that no one with AIDS should be discriminated against, deemed worthless or stripped of their rights. So tonight is our turn, as the artists on stage as well as the people cheering them on, come together as one big voice. Tonight we follow in the footsteps of these innovators who are the example of what can happen when we care enough not to turn away from each other and when we dream big enough to make change a reality. Tonight in This evening we’re honoring George Harrison, an this room, we are the small group of people who extremely unique and inspiring individual who was have the power to be that big change so vital to one of the first to bring together a group of artists humanity. The work we do is direct and real, and we are thrilled to share with you five of our favorite stories that illustrate the hope and strength of the people we are proud to serve. INDIA Savitri: A Life Rebuilt Sahara Aalhad Care Home, Pune Savitri was born and raised in Pune, where Keep a Child Alive supports the Sahara Aalhad Care Home. Diagnosed with epilepsy as a young child, she learned how to live a normal life on treatment, where she could still excel at school. As is often the case for young poor girls in India, Savitri’s parents pulled her out of school at age 14 to be married. Her family insisted that she keep her epilepsy a secret in fear that her new husband’s family would not approve. In her new home, Savitri found herself victim to physical and emotional abuse. It was only a matter of time before his family discovered that she was epileptic, and they sent her back to her father’s house. Shortly after, Savitri’s mother died. At the delicate age of 15, she faced both the painful loss of her mother, and the obligation to take on her mother’s role as caretaker for her family. One day while she was cooking, she had an epileptic fit. She fell on the
As her father grew older and her brother came of age to be married, Savitri grew keenly aware of how alone she was in the world. She reunited with her husband for several months, and fell pregnant. At age 18, she gave birth to her son, Avinash, and when her husband’s family learned that they had
a grandson, she was allowed to return to live with them in their home. She survived brutal beatings by his family for one month, until she defended herself one day and hit her mother-in-law back. Her husband filed a complaint with the police and Savitri was put in jail. Knowing her life was in danger in her husband’s home, Savitri and Avinash returned to live with her aging father. Soon after, she fell sick and learned that she was HIV-positive. Overwhelmed by what that meant, she wanted to kill herself; but that would mean leaving Avinash alone, the way so many people in her life had left her, and she resolved that she would never let that happen. In 2007, Savitri’s health deteriorated. She came to the Sahara Aalhad Care Home where she received the medical treatment, care and support she needed to recover and rebuild her life. The Sahara team taught her how to make handicrafts that she could sell, and secured a handcart for her to sell vegetables from. Before she knew it, Savitri was able to support herself and her son. In 2009, Savitri was readmitted to Sahara, where she met a fellow patient, Ravi. As they regained their health, they fell in love. Today, they are happily married, living together with Avinash, who is 12 years old and excelling in school. Savitri’s story is why we do what we do at Keep a Child Alive. In addition to the Sahara Aalhad Care Home, KCA also supports these life-saving projects in India: Living India Home of Hope; Chandrakal The plight of AIDS orphans in India is one of immeasurable complexities that destines children to die with the virus left unchecked and untreated. In the rural village of Chandrakal, KCA partners with Living India to care for 60 children with HIV/AIDS once abandoned to horrifying circumstances. With your support, the children now live in peace and thrive in a beautiful home where they eat well-balanced meals, go to school for the first time and experience the once seeming impossibility of a normal life. RNP+ Vatsalya Care Home; Jalore Located in rural Jalore, the Vatsalya Care Home was established by the Rajasthan Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (RNP+) to provide a safe haven for the most vulnerable children in the community. 29 children found shelter here, as well
as access to education, proper nutrition and medical care. However, intense stigma around HIV/AIDS still permeated the rural community where the home was located, and KCA saw the urgent need to rehouse these children in a larger, more comfortable and secure home. In May 2011, the new Vatsalya Care Home opened, giving these children the chance to be kids again, something that they all deserve. RNP+ Aanchal Care Home; Jaipur Since KCA partnered with RNP+ in 2010, the organization opened a second orphan care home in Jaipur, the same city where RNP+ offices are based. RNP+ currently cares for 17 children in this home, and will soon be moving them all to a larger home closer to the city of Jaipur. RNP+ also continues to work to strengthen the capacities of the remaining family for each child, so that one day they may return and live with their own extended families. KCA and RNP+ are also working to address the stigma around HIV/AIDS that exists in the communities in which they work, to ensure that the children in our care have a positive environment to grow up in.
KENYA Afaafa*: A Baby with a New Beginning The Family Care Clinic, Mombasa Little Afaafa* is the youngest child in his family of five. His father passed away from AIDS, leaving his mother, a day laborer, to care for Afaafa and his siblings. With no family to turn to for help, Afaafa’s mother fights a daily battle for her children’s survival. When 11-month-old Afaafa fell sick with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, she was beside herself with worry. Desperate to save his life, she used the little money earned from the day’s labor to bring Afaafa to the hospital. Diagnosed with severe pneumonia, Afaafa was later referred to KCA’s Family Care Clinic (FCC). His condition was critical, and everyone at the clinic feared he would not survive. Afaafa was tested for HIV and the clinic started doing everything possible to help him get stronger.
his rapid daily improvement. After just two weeks of treatment, baby Afaafa was well enough to return home. When his mother brought him back to the clinic later that month for a check-up, he was barely recognizable. In a matter of weeks, treatment had transformed Afaafa, rescuing him from certain death. Gone was the lethargic, weak and fragile boy whose mother cried in anguish for her baby. In his place was a boy whose vibrant eyes were awake to the new world around him and his mother, who smiled down on him with joy as he played at her feet. RWANDA Mubarak: A Leader for His Peers The Centreville Clinic, Kigali Before his mother died from AIDS, Mubarak, a patient and peer-parent at KCA’s Centreville Clinic in Rwanda, hadn’t the slightest clue that he was HIV-positive. Six months later, one of her remaining family members told Mubarak that he had HIV. He reacted with disbelief and anger, not understanding how his mother could have kept a secret such as that from him. The truth was that she feared if others
found out about his HIV, Mubarak would be forced to leave their home.
When the results came back showing that Afaafa was HIV-positive, the clinic initiated him on treatment right away. At such a tender age, Afaafa was already a fighter. He fought for his life with the heart of a champion, and surprised the entire staff at FCC with *Name changed to protect anonymity
Mubarak feared for his life and was angry that the opportunity to be healthy was taken from him. Now the caretaker of his younger sister and still attending school, the news that he had HIV overwhelmed him. Although he is naturally brilliant and speaks eight languages, Mubarak was confronted by the stigma associated with HIV at school. He longed to continue his education elsewhere, and his teachers assured
him that they would help him to complete his studies abroad. His hopes were later dashed when the teachers said study abroad was not possible for him because of his HIV status. He told us, “Losing the chance to go hurt me, it broke me, it broke my heart that having HIV is why I was losing my opportunity to continue my studies.” He contemplated suicide. It wasn’t until he attended counseling sessions offered at the Centreville Clinic that his outlook changed: “The counseling showed me the opportunity to continue my studies. Then I got the confidence to be an active man, to be confident in the way that men are who are not positive.” Today, Mubarak continues to gain esteem by sharing his experience and confidence with at risk youth in the peer-parent program. “We share various ideas in order to have a bright future and to have a strong belief in ourselves… We try to make them understand that even if they are HIVpositive, they’re still alive - it is a miracle of God.”

Mubarak knows that the issues facing teens and young adults with HIV/AIDS can be isolating – even crippling – to his generation. After all the years spent rebuilding the country following the genocide, and the emphasis on education towards a better future for the country, opportunities exist for the youth of Rwanda today. Mubarak and the other peer-parents at Centreville want to make sure that youth with HIV/ AIDS are empowered by good health, confidence and have the support they need to take advantage of what’s out there, with all their passion for life! SOUTH AFRICA Sparrow: A Little Bird Gets Her Wings Nkosi’s Haven, Johannesburg Two years ago, Sparrow was found living in a tin shack, abandoned by her mother and trying to keep her baby sibling alive. She was a little girl, just four years old, when she was brought to Nkosi’s Haven severely malnourished, dehydrated and weighing only 11 pounds. The baby left in her care died soon after. Nkosi’s Haven has become a sanctuary for HIV+ mothers and their children, and children who have been orphaned by AIDS. When they took little Sparrow in, Founder Gail Johnson gave her a teddy bear, and Sparrow was so fragile and afraid that she would bite anyone who tried to take the bear away
with HIV care for the orphaned children there. Gloria has become a mother to Sparrow. Earlier this year, Sparrow’s biological mother was released from jail. She wanted to see Sparrow, but Sparrow refused to leave her new family at Nkosi’s Haven and return to the mother who had abandoned her just a few years before. Recently, Sparrow’s mother died. If Sparrow had been released into her mother’s care, where would she be now? Sparrow is 6 years old now and weighs nearly 45 pounds. She has learned English, has a brilliant appetite, and is doing well on her ARV medication. The play therapy services at Nkosi’s Haven continue to be crucial to Sparrow’s development, as she is slowly

abuse to help minimize their risk of HIV infection at the point of rescue, ensure their health and well being, and bring their perpetrators to justice. Their court-approved approach, which uses a teddy bear for children to describe their abuse, has helped save thousands of children from having to relive their trauma by retelling their stories. Blue Roof Wellness Centre; Wentworth, Durban The Blue Roof has become an integral part of the South African government's HIV/AIDS efforts, and is impacting the lives of thousands. Among its services, the clinic provides free anti-retroviral medication to more than 1500 patients, HIV counseling and testing, nutritional support, community outreach, and alcohol and drug abuse counseling. In addition to comprehensive care for HIV/AIDS, the Blue Roof works

Ikageng Itireleng AIDS Ministry; Soweto AIDS has created a generation of the youngest parents yet – children orphaned by AIDS. These children have no choice but to take care of themselves, their younger brothers and sisters. With KCA, Ikageng works tirelessly to support more than 1500 children living in child-headed households, providing food, clothing, transportation, water, electricity, school fees, healthcare and transport. For KCA, Ikageng represents the great challenge faced in the wake of so many deaths due to AIDS. For every child helped,

for 2 days and nights. Finally, a neighbor stopped Fiona on her way to school and asked why Grandma had not been going to work, and what Fiona was doing for food. The little girl responded only “Grandma has been in bed, sleeping. She does not wake.” When the neighbor entered the home, she found the old woman dead in the bed. The room smelled of her body, already decomposing, beside which Fiona had spent the last few nights. Fiona fell silent. Apart from Grandma, she knew of no other relative. Without Grandma, there would be no one to love and protect her; she was alone in the world. Through KCA’s Alive Medical Services, Fiona is slowing beginning to see that she is not alone. Still AIDS creates another child in need of our care. UGANDA Fiona: Orphaned by War and AIDS Alive Medical Services, Kampala Every patient who walks through our doors at Alive Medical Services is a miracle just waiting to happen. Each is an amazing gift made possible through the pure love of KCA and its donors, who help give life to thousands whom they have never met. For Fiona, a 9 year-old girl from the slums of Kampala, hope must seem as distant as a dream. Having lost both her parents to war in the North of Uganda, she lived with her Grandma in a tiny one-room shack on the edge of an open sewer. They struggled to survive on the wages Grandma earned sorting coffee beans in a nearby factory – less than $1 a day. The backbreaking work left Grandma exhausted, and the medication she received from the clinic sometimes made her feel too weak to even eat. Somehow, there was always something for Fiona to eat when she returned home from school; and, lying down beside Grandma at night, she felt safe from the world around her. One morning, Fiona woke and got ready for school. Grandma was still in bed and Fiona left quietly, as not to disturb her, thinking Grandma must be too tired to go to work today. Later, she returned home from school only to find that Grandma was still sleeping. With no money to buy food, Fiona lay down beside Grandma in the bed and went to sleep. This went on
heartbroken for the loss of her Grandma, she now lives in a loving home with other children who, just like her, have no family left to care for them. The scars are present in each of them, but through support and encouragement, hope has taken root. When Fiona comes to the clinic for her medical care, everyone greets her with smiles and loving embraces for, in Fiona, they see hope flourishing into possibility.
WHY IS KEEP A CHILD ALIVE DIFFERENT? Keep a Child Alive is, at its core, rebellious, irreverent and cutting-edge. We pride ourselves on being an organization that is not afraid to push the limits. A pioneer in most of our endeavors, KCA is and will always be an organization that cannot be ignored because of our distinct look and our innovative approach to fundraising. We were the first non-profit to ask the public for donations to directly fund AIDS treatment that people in Africa were unable to access. At that time, people in the AIDS movement thought we were crazy. But we were crazy with outrage that people were losing entire families to this preventable and treatable disease. WE ARE FEARLESS We move boldly and purposefully with urgency in our work every day. We are people of action, doing what we can to make life better for others, because it is within all of our abilities to do so. BELIEF We believe that, with AIDS treatment, anything is possible. We watch people become reborn with treatment. Their children watch in wonder as their parents come back to life. It is thrilling to see, but no matter how many players are working to make treatment possible, it is still only a fraction of what is needed. In many countries, there is still no legislation to protect and care for the countless numbers of AIDS orphans struggling to overcome their emotional trauma as well as their day to day survival. We recognize how multi-faceted the AIDS pandemic really is, and address it with our model of comprehensive HIV care for people infected and affected by AIDS.
HOW WE FUND We fund community based organizations whose amazing work on the ground is often overlooked. We fund with the genuine belief that the organizations we support have the abilities required, and will use KCA funds in the most effective way possible. RESPECT We respect that local people have the skills, understand the traditions, and that their way is the best way for their people. We simply give them the means to make things happen. We listen and we learn from their approaches, and it helps us to continually improve upon our work together. OUR INNOVATIONS KCA has been ahead of the curve since its inception and has thrived on being different. We were the first NGO to offer a feature length documentary Alicia in Africa: Journey to the Motherland for free on the Internet to generate awareness and we were the first charity to successfully use text messaging as a fundraising tool raising over $1 million to date. KCA was also the first to use barcode scanning technology on smart phone devices for philanthropic purposes with our BUY LIFE campaign. LOVE The key difference at Keep a Child Alive is LOVE. The whole team feels genuine love, compassion and deep respect for each other, which we bring to our patients and to our purpose. We are a family at KCA and we care about keeping families alive and together.

During a career spanning four decades, George Harrison earned a reputation as one of the most talented and influential individuals in rock and roll. As a guitarist, songwriter and singer, he made albums that generated massive hits while deepening our sense for the music’s artistic possibilities; his iconic All Things Must Pass stands among the greatest recordings of all time. As a member of The Beatles, his guitar lines, solos and intros were unforgettable, his songs were some of their most celebrated, and his studio innovations and use of the sitar revolutionized popular music in the Sixties.
Many have struggled in the strange, often uncomfortable space between great material success and the possibility of a spiritual life. History has shown artists retreating in one direction, toward the material, or the other, into the spiritual. What George Harrison did was to explore the space between, mining its paradoxes in order to find its possibilities. Among the better examples of this is The Concert for Bangladesh. With no precedent to serve as a model for what he wanted to do, George Harrison put together the first benefit concert of its kind. If people of today have grown accustomed to such events, that is a situation of good fortune, and one for which Harrison will be remembered. His work continues to this day through The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF.
How did concert come into being? In a private moment with friend and mentor, Ravi Shankar, George Harrison learned of the war-related humanitarian crisis affecting the Bengali people. As Shankar said, “[George] knew about the turmoil of my mind.” From that private moment came Harrison’s public solution, the history-making concert that would sell tickets, sell albums, and fill theaters—all of the money going to heal the situation.
