here’s gonna be a shoot-out… but with bikes! Here’s the plan: we’ve got three mountain bikers and three road riders, all part of our in-house “Ride It and Rate It!” team, and we’re going to send them out riding to find out how some of today’s best bikes get on in the real world. We want to know how typical riders find different types of bikes in everyday conditions to help you decide what’s the best option for you. The road riders are going to take on the western loop of the King of the Downs super sportive

They’ve got six bikes to trial between them. Two of them are alloy, two of them combine alloy and carbon, and two of them are full carbon. The bikes are designed with slightly different purposes in mind, they come with various types of gearing and prices range from £550 to £4,200 so there’s something for everyone. The roadies have five big hills to climb, and their reward for getting around is a slap-up meal with the mountain bikers in the Smith & Western Wild West-themed restaurant at the top of the final one – Box Hill, near Dorking. The mountain bikers, meanwhile, are heading out on the medium length off-road route from the last Dorking Ride It! event – 25 challenging miles in a classic riding area. It’s a ride that features over 1,000m of climbing and plenty of singletrack to spice things up. Like the roadies, the MTBers are riding six bikes between them – priced from £650 right through to £2,700. They’ve got women’s specific bikes in there and both hardtail and full suspension setups.

Road Ride umpy. That’s the word that sums up the route our intrepid road riders were taking on. Dave, James and Kerry had decided to ride the 56-mile western loop of the King of the Downs super sportive ahead of time to prepare for the event itself, and it’s a toughie. “It’s a fantastic ride. It’s serene, it’s beautiful, it’s scenic – all the things you want, basically,” says Dave. “It also takes in some of the most renowned hills in the Southeast. You climb 4,800ft in the Surrey Hills and the North Downs,
Kerry: Running convert who’s ridden at a couple of Ride It! events and is now looking to take her riding to the next level. Kerry rode two women’s specific machines, the popular alloy-framed Specialized Dolce and the Bianchi Dama Bianca 105 Mix with it’s alu-carbon frame.
Dave: so we knew it was going to be a challenge.” It’s just as well, then, that our riders had a selection of excellent road bikes to help them get around the route quickly and comfortably. “I started out on the alloy-framed Specialized Dolce 24 and it was great on the big climbs like Leith Hill, which is over two miles long,” said Kerry. “The triple chainset gives you enough gears to get up pretty much anything and I got on well with the women specific saddle too which was a bonus.” James had a triple to start with too, on his aluminium Trek Pilot 2.0, and he was impressed with the fairly upright ride position offered by the tall front end. It’s perfect for longer rides like this when keeping your back strain-free is vital if you want to have a good day in the saddle. Dave, meanwhile, was tearing about on a beautiful BMC Race Master SLX01. With a lightweight carbon/alloy frame, high-end Shimano Ultegra components and Easton wheels, it was no wonder he was setting the pace through the quiet lanes. James York Manager James is the manager at our York store, and is an incredibly accomplished road and cyclo-cross racer. We asked him to give us the lowdown on what is happening in the road bike market. I have to say that the biggest change is that carbon fibre is becoming more prevalent in bikes at lower end of the pricerange, whether it be full carbon or carbon alloy mix. This wonder-material can make a big difference to the performance of a bike if used properly, though not to undermine the alloy frame that is now almost perfectly developed, and still gives a great ride. Also, componentry further down the ranges are so improved that the differences are even more subtle. An entry-level road bike has some great quality kit which 5 years ago would have been on a bike of twice the price. Ride character istics have been so well developed and advanced that bikes can be used all year round across all types of cycling.

If you want to get to the top of the climbs faster, use a heart rate monitor... on’t panic! That’s the best advice for tackling the hills. Yes, climbing is harder than riding on the flat, but it’s all part of the fun of cycling and, anyway, that’s what your gears are for. Gauge your effort right and there’s no reason why you can’t get up the steepest slopes painlessly enough… especially if you have a heart rate monitor (HRM) to help you. Lots of people see a hill and they go like stink to get it over and done with as quickly as possible. Bad move! You need to rein yourself in, change down a gear – or several – and keep your effort as close to normal as possible. A heart rate monitor is an excellent measure of how hard you’re working on your bike. When you work harder, your heart beats faster; when you take it easier, your heart rate comes down – simple. In general, if you want to ride as fast as possible for as long as possible, you want your heart rate to stay pretty consistent without too many peaks and troughs. Above all, you don’t want to go into ‘the red zone’ too often. The red zone is the level at which your body produces lactate faster than you can disperse it, so it accumulates in your blood. It’s a complicated old business but if you go into the red zone too often, you’re on a slippery slope and your performance will start to drop off. Although it varies between different people, the red zone begins at about 80-90% of your maximum heart rate – although the more you use your rate monitor the easier it will be to find this level. So, get yourself a heart rate monitor and it’ll help you get to the top quicker by judging your intensity better on the climbs.
There are loads of different heart rate monitors to choose from and they vary massively in the functions they provide. The most basic give you a heart rate reading and a stopwatch while top-ofthe-range models measure speed and distance and even incorporate GPS features. 18 Summer 2010

ith a decent morning of riding behind them it was good to see there were no bad apples among the road bikes. The general consensus was that the aluminium framed machines gave a good ‘solid’ ride but the stiffness could be a bit unforgiving on longer rides. The addition of carbon fibre, whether as a full frame choice or an alu/carbon mix would be a great option as the material dampens a lot of the vibration from the road due to its shock absorbing properties. However, as Kerry pointed out, the little things like secondary brake levers can make all the difference to some people so make sure you consider the complete bike package.

that was used for the medium ride at the Evans Ride It! series, and to try out some of the bikes and kit that Evans customers would be choosing between. Mark and Terri-Anne are responsible for deciding a lot of what the stores carry, so it’s important that they know what’s what. There’s no better way of finding out than to get out there and give it a go. And of course it’s a day out riding bikes on a work day, which is always tough to beat! “It was great to get out again, fill the lungs with fresh air, get the heart rate up, take in the views and most of all have a giggle,” said Mark. Have a giggle he certainly did, pinging Cannondale’s RZ One40 off every root in the trail. And this being the North Downs, there was no shortage of roots. According to Stu the Surrey Hills closely resemble his home town of Queenstown in New Zealand, but no-one could quite be sure if he was joking or not. Either way, his Lapierre Zesty 214 made short work of the tricky terrain with a healthy dose of Gallic flair. Terri-Anne, meanwhile, was embracing the simplicity of two wheels, choosing Scott’s women-specific Contessa 30 hardtail. At £650 it’s a popular option among women looking for

She wasn’t going to let the lads do all the showing off, though: “I tried my best to hold it up for the girls and act ‘fierce’ in the photos – elbows out!” The plan was to rendezvous with the roadies for lunch, which meant scaling Box Hill. The road climb may be something of a local icon, but mountain biking doesn’t tend to glorify climbs – they’re more of a means to an end. Everyone approached it with good humour, though, and even the longer-travel full-suspension bikes proved light and sprightly enough to flatter the riders’ efforts. rail skills There’s a fundamental difference between cycling on the road and off it. Fast road riding is largely a matter of fitness and strength (bike handling skills are a bonus), but the constantlychanging surface over which mountain bikes tend to roll makes it a very different proposition. Except on the very tamest trails, just sitting there and pedalling is not an option. Riding off-road trails successfully is largely a matter of weight distribution. If you’re descending a steep slope, moving your weight back helps prevent you flipping over the bars. On tricky climbs, moving forward keeps the front wheel on the ground, but don’t overdo it or the rear will break traction. In corners, pulling yourself over the front will boost grip, while a rearward shift under hard braking will reduce the tendency of the back end to lift. Then you’ve got dips, lumps, jumps and drops, and again it’s all about where you put your weight. Unweight the front up the face of a lump and then push the front wheel back down over the back. Pushing the bars forward and out as you hit a lip will automatically put you in the right position to avoid the front wheel just tipping over the edge. Use bent arms and legs to let the bike move around underneath you and it’ll successfully negotiate rough stretches of trail largely by itself. Even the notoriously-tricky bunnyhop is mainly a matter of carefully-timed weight shifts – a rearward one to lift the front wheel flowing seamlessly into a forward push of the bars and a push back on the pedals to unweight the rear. These brakes are amazingly powerful! I upgraded from my old V Brakes because I found the performance in rain and mud to be pretty bad. Fitting these brakes is extremely simple, ensure that you get the correct mounting brackets. If you are unsure which brackets you might need, contact Evans first or take a look on Hope’s website. I would recommend getting a decent cable cutter if you don’t have one already. Don’t try using a cheaper alternative to cut the cables after investing in a great product like this! Braking is now razor sharp and a real pleasure. You know that in those extreme circumstances when you need to stop as quickly as possible, these will more than do the job. I have done over 300 miles so far and have not noticed any fade in power after sustained usage. The brake levers are also very well designed. Lots of adjustment without the need of tools and the holes drilled into the levels mean that your fingers really grip them even when wet. Buy them now!!

I purchased this for use whilst doing a weeks touring with friends around the coast of Cornwall. As it was the first time I had done any touring, the idea of a box to contain all my valuables/ things I needed access to quickly seemed ideal, and luckily this bag does what it says on the tin. The mount is very secure, simple to fit and strong, as well as making the bag very quick to remove which is ideal for nipping into shops etc and taking valuables with you - although standing around waiting for friends with old-fashioned Velcro-attached bar bags to remove theirs can be frustrating! The detachable carrying strap is also useful for this, although it is quite bulky. The bag itself is very easy to use even whilst cycling, due to the Velcro it can be opened one handed and then you can get access to the bag safely. The rigid internal frame is very good, stopping the bag collapsing around heavier items and hiding small items as cheaper bags often do. The small internal pouch is also good for keeping these items safe, especially hair bands for me! The best thing about this bag has to be the waterproof layer - not having to worry about keeping phones/ cameras/documents dry is a blessing and means no faffing around with little plastic bags etc. Although I’ve only used it in a couple really heavy downpours it kept everything bone dry. Inevitably there are a few downsides, firstly the price, which seems quite a lot for a bar bag but if you’re going to do any touring or regular wet commuting its definitely worth it for the hassle saved. Secondly, it would be nice if the adapters for oversized handlebars were included, instead of having to purchase them separately. Overall a great useful bit of kit, which unlike so many things these days simply does what it is supposed to do well!

I never ride without glasses of some description, as they provide essential protection from dust and grit, as well as from the wind and, when we have any, the sun! I like the way the frame of the half jackets contours around my head, and the XLJ lenses prevent anything from creeping in around the edges. The only downside is that they have a tendency to mist up if you put them on cold, but on the bike there’s always some airflow to clear the lenses. I have bought a pair of transitions lenses for my half jackets - these change as the light conditions change, which means that I don’t have to worry about choosing the right lenses unless conditions are exceptionally bright, and even in dusky or stormy conditions, the lenses perform well. These glasses are just as good off the bike as on, and it’s fair to say that they go everywhere with me. If I were to break them, I would replace them, like for like, immediately.

Meon Valley Railway Line, Hampshire The Meon Valley Railway closed its doors to trains in 1968 but nowadays the 9-mile section from Wickham to West Meon makes a great day’s ride. The route is level but can get muddy in places and there’s a couple of minor road crossings where bridges have been dismantled. A less well-known route than some of the others here, it’s usually quiet which increases your chances of seeing some wildlife on your ride.

Crab and Winkle Way, Kent The Crab and Winkle way was world’s first passenger railway when it opened in 1830. Starting at the University of Kent Campus the route runs for seven and a half miles to the coast at Whistable. About half of the route is trafficfree and there’s a few climbs along the way, so it’s a good one for older kids who are a bit more confident. Bristol to Bath Railway Path, Bristol The jewel in the crown of Sustrans’ network and the most-used traffic-free route in the country, the Bristol-Bath follows the old Midland Railway route
and was completed in 1986. The route is tarmac along its entire route, and there’s plenty of interest along the way including the steam engines of the Avon Valley Railway and the 300m tunnel at Staple Hill. The Wirral Way, Merseyside This 12-mile path runs through the Wirral Country Park from Hooton to the beautiful beaches of West Kirby. You’ll get great views across to Wales over the Dee Estuary and the visitor centre at Thurstaston has cycle hire facilities and a cafe. Hillend Loch, Lanarkshire Easily accessible from Edinburgh and Glasgow, The Hillend Loch trail follows the line of the Airdrie to Bathgate railway and winds for 14 miles, with sculptures along the route reflecting the rich industrial heritage of the area. The route is trafficfree for all of its length with the exception of a short road section at Caldercruix.
If you’re a skilled cyclist there’s one last thing to remember, don’t go too far; turning a family ride in to a chain gang is not the way to get kids cycling!

After some of the harshest winter weather of recent times, potholes in the road are a real concern. Here’s how to stay safe… otholes are no joke. After two hard winters in a row they are all over Britain’s roads, and they are a real menace to cyclists. Here at Evans Cycles we know that the state of the roads is important to you. In our recent customer survey you told us that, along with the attitude of car drivers towards cyclists and your desire for more bike paths, poor roads are among your biggest concerns. Thanks

to everyone who filled in our survey and here’s our guide to coping with potholes. Potholes form when water seeps into cracks in the asphalt or under the sides of the road, and then it freezes in cold weather. As the water freezes it expands and that affects the underlying layers of the road and eventually the surface, causing a hole. And once a pothole forms, it can quickly get worse. One estimate says that there’s an average of one pothole for every 110 metres of road in
the UK right now. And if that’s bad news for motorists, it’s a nightmare for cyclists. First of all, potholes can damage your bike. The most common problem is a pinch flat – also known as a snake bite puncture – which is caused when the inner tube is squashed hard between the rim of your wheel and the surface you’re riding on, usually leaving two distinctive parallel slits in the tube. They’re hard if not impossible to fix, so it’s usually time for a new tube. The force of hitting a pothole
can also damage the wheel rim or break spokes, so you’ve got to put up with the time and expense of getting your bike fixed.
The other more serious problem is the effect of potholes on your safety. Hitting a hole can cause you to lose control, while swerving to avoid one can put you in danger too. Unfortunately, accidents can – and do – result from both.

What’s the good news? Well, to start with you don’t just have to accept potholes as a fact of life, you can get 50 Summer 2010

Boxing clever
These days many city centre traffic lights come complete with Advanced Stop Lines (ASLs) or ‘Bike Boxes’ as they are often referred to. They are there to help make cyclists visible to other road users at the head of the traffic queue when the lights turn green and traffic pulls away. Bike boxes are usually fed by a cycle lane and if you’re on a bike that’s how you are supposed to enter the box - in theory you could get a fixed penalty fine if you don’t. Motorists aren’t allowed to stop in the box… unless it would be impossible or unsafe to stop on the first stop line, then they have to stop before the second stop line. It’s always important to keep an eye on the lights when filtering through traffic - you don’t want to be so fixated on getting to the box that you pull in front of a car just as the lights change! Turning right can sometimes be a bit tricky too, especially if you have to go across the box to do so - just try to be as assertive as possible. Finally, remember to keep an eye out for oncoming traffic turning across you too.

Councils are responsible for dealing with potholes on A and B roads, but they can’t deal with them if they don’t know

they are there. Once notified though they have a statutory responsibility to fill them in, if they don’t and an accident occurs – they will be liable. CTC say that anecdotally, they know that the majority of potholes reported to www.fillthathole. org.uk are filled quickly. Their Campaigns Director, Roger Geffen recently estimated that 30-40% of reported holes were filled.
Toughen up your bike If the roads are tough going it’s not a bad idea to toughen up your bike to cope. If you ride a standard road bike, fitting bigger tyres will help. Swap from 23c to 25c and you’ll get a larger air chamber to cope with any impact, helping you stay in charge

It’s also worth knowing ‘your roads’ - most of us ride the same routes regularly so it makes sense to make a mental note of where the sections of poorly surfaced roads are in order to stay safe. Then, when you know you’re approaching a rough section, you can adjust your speed, or signal to other road users in plenty of time and steer around the dangerous bit. If you spot a pothole at the last moment and you can’t avoid it, the most important thing is to stay calm. Don’t turn the
bars and veer out into the road unless you’re 100% confident that it’s safe to do so. Instead, hold your line and ride it out by doing what mountain bikers do to get over bumpy trails. Keep your upper body relaxed and bend your elbows a little more than usual so that your arms can act as shock absorbers. If you’ve got time, stand up on the pedals too, keeping your knees slightly bent so that your legs can provide more damping. Stay loose and the chances are that you’ll get through the hole without any trouble.
