...to the 7th SA Innovation Summit at the Cape Town Stadium

he South African Innovation Summit is here! This year’s theme Local Innovation Global Conversation showcases South Africa’s wealth of creativity, originality and ingenuity for breakthrough innovation and developing solutions to unique challenges that fuel our capability for innovation and invention. Finding solutions and developing new products and systems are at the very heart of our motivation for innovation and we stand proud amidst the many local innovations and inventions that have been adopted by the rest of the world. The world’s first heart transplant, the dolos, the CAT scan, the Kreepy Krauley, the Pratley Putty, the “speed gun” used in cricket ovals, the world’s first oil-fromcoal processing and of course the first hair transplant, to name but a few, were ours. We will be sharing these with the world in Cape Town. The conference will be videostreamed Internationally. As the World Design Capital (WDC 2014), the Mother City is the epicentre of dialogue on design thinking and design development. We are excited to capitalize on the WDC and draw the world’s attention to showcase our innovative capability to take local innovation into a broader global conversation! Participation is critical to our success, and digital and social media will play a vital part in our campaign to Go Global as we take the conversation viral to reach a

broader community. Please follow us and participate on Twitter using, @innovsummit. Lets trend with your #whatif questions and let this summit provoke innovation. Our challenge to you: Don’t just watch: Participate! Tweet. The 7th SA Innovation Summit has an incredible programme and line-up of opportunities to connect, engage, discuss, debate and celebrate our innovative spirit and the tools that gives it substance. As always, the line-up of speakers is very impressive and will not disappoint. We are honoured to have 40+ speakers gracing our event with their knowledge, expertise and fascinating tales of success in innovation. The speakers are known thought-leaders both nationally and internationally. Thank you to all our partners, organisers, speakers, judges, inventors and pitchers that will make this year an incredible story to tell. To all innovation managers, inventors, entrepreneurs, funders, researchers, policy makers, innovation junkies, and to all the wonderful contributors who will accelerate innovation through their participation to make this the best SA Innovation Summit yet, we wish you an exhilarating journey through the Summit. Let the fun begin! Audrey Verhaeghe Chairman: SA Innovation Summit

n the face of such a torrent of unemployment, poverty and unyielding inequality, it’s easy to understand why its critical to establish and grow small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). The fact that the recession served to wipe out considerable gains in economic development and poverty reduction achieved since the advent of democracy, places onerous responsibilities on both the private and public sectors to create jobs. Rightly so; an unemployment rate sitting above 25% does not bode well for the future. Even more worrying is the fact that youth constitute more than 60% of the unemployed in this country. The growing number of educated and in some cases qualified youth roaming the streets countywide, best illustrates the challenge facing job creators. Our economy therefore needs to start creating jobs at a faster rate in order to absorb the unemployed into the main stream economy. Fortunately, our government does not only realise these challenges but continues to make bold interventions to stem the unemployment tide. For its part, government’s decision to focus on nurturing and growing SMMEs is commendable because SMMEs are the cornerstone for most growing economies across the globe.

It is estimated that South Africa is home to more than 5.9 million SMMEs generating about 40% of the local economy’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It is further estimated that SMMEs provide about 60% of local employment. Though impressive, the overriding sense in these statistics is one of concern. For all its potential, local SMMEs ought to be punching above their weight. There are plenty opportunities that government has created for youth to try their hand at entrepreneurship. On the back of one of the biggest public infrastructure spend ever seen on the continent, government has created an opportunity for youth to break into the mainstream economy. State Owned Entities have earmarked to spend close to a trillion rand on various infrastructure projects. This and many other interventions present a great opportunity to create black industrialists that this country so desperately needs. Therefore, we can’t over-emphasise the importance of initiatives such as Start UP South Africa. Such initiatives should be used to galvanise entrepreneurship in the country as we strive towards our goal of creating black industrialists. We are aware of the challenges that both aspiring and existing business owners experience in terms of accessing finance from mainstream

commercial lenders hence this in large measure informed our decision to create a more flexible and nimble subsidiary (Sefa) that solely addresses financial needs of start-up or expansionary businesses. Furthermore and as part of its contribution to youth entrepreneurship development, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) , sefa and the NYDA signed a Youth Employment Accord whose objective is to improve skills development among young people. The IDC further reinforced its commitment to the Accord by contributing about R1bn-funds earmarked to benefit

deserving youth owned businesses. I therefore implore stakeholders in this initiative to commit to its objectives. Our country is in desperate need of black industrialists and once again I won’t overstate the fact that initiatives of this nature can help unearth the hidden potential of local SMMEs in general and our youth in particular. Head of Innovation and Marketing / NCC Environmental Services

Innovation for Real Growth This is a practical look at how you can get innovation systems working in your company without getting distracted by too much fancy innovation theory. During this presentation, Andrew Purnell, shares the experience of introducing a structured approach to innovation at NCC Environmental Services, a medium size environmental consulting company. He explains how NCC’s approach to formalizing innovation has been effective without a huge investment in consultants and systems. Andrew starts by reflecting how the company has been innovating over the years without any formal innovation strategy. He explains how innovation came to be identified as a strategic competitive advantage requiring a more strategic approach. Andrew shares how he increased his knowledge about innovation by attending the 2011 and 2012 SA Innovation Summits and used this knowledge to inspire his colleagues and develop innovation strategy at NCC. He shares the challenges he faced trying

w w w.innovationsummit.co.z a

to find information about innovation that applies to the professional services, business-to-business environment. He explains how NCC’s approach to innovation has evolved over time and adapted to operational and financial pressures. He provides practical examples of the systems and processes NCC implemented as part of their innovation strategy as well as the tools they have used to support innovation. He illustrates how Innovation has been integrated into the company’s ISO 9001 Quality Management System as well as the company’s Balanced Score Card strategic plan. Andrew concludes by exploring the factors which, in his opinion, are essential for creating an enabling environment for innovation in any company. Biography My job is to help 130 passionate environmentalists to achieve our company’s vision of ‘Real growth for people, planet and business’. I achieve this by enabling my colleagues

“To achieve the planet’s sustainability goals, we require innovative approaches to expanding the emotional intelligence of political and corporate leadership” to: a) identify client and market needs; b) be innovative at the point of customizing existing services and c) find innovative solutions to new business opportunities. Together we aim to deliver value that achieves our client’s business goals whilst meeting the needs of the people and communities and maximises positive environmental impacts.

Silicon Cape success stories: Building global businesses and a sustainable start-up community High growth, innovative businesses are vital for South Africa and Africa to create new industries, address local opportunities, drive economic growth and create jobs. However, building an innovative business is easier said than done and cannot operate in isolation. The creation of a supportive, collaborative entrepreneurial ecosystem to assist and facilitate the growth of these businesses both large and small is necessary. While Silicon Cape is a relatively young community, a number of our start-ups have achieved rapid growth, international success, raised millions in funding, and exit to large global and local corporates. This has been achieved through the successful commercialization and licensing of technologies, adaption of known businesses to the local environment, and innovation in response to market demands. This session will focus on the local ecosystem’s development, areas of innovation and activity and case studies

Inspired Towards Science, Engineering and Technology – Community Engagement through Innovation Although Community Engagement (CE) is considered one of the core functions of Higher Education (HE), the implementation thereof is primarily fragmented and ad hoc. There is a need for a transformation of CE from the traditional, ad hoc, disjointed and unlinked CE to CE that is linked to the teaching and research of an institution, with measurable outcomes as evidence. The traditional CE, however, is currently challenged in terms of resources and logistics of time and place. This research thus considers the innovative use of ICT towards the transformational enhancement (TE) of CE from traditional to virtual, by the deployment of technologies within CE projects, and in so doing, overcoming the identified CE challenges to reach a wider community. The transformation process may be a continuum move from traditional CE to virtual CE. The enhancement of CE implies that the traditional CE is not replaced but rather enriched and supplemented by the virtual CE. Journey to Jupiter: Unleashing Disruptive Innovation The journey to Jupiter talk is a personal journey about my experiences in innovation from rocket fuel in a kitchen in Mthatha to high performance fuel cells in labs at Harvard and MIT. Biography At 25 years of age, engineer Siyabulela Xuza is one of the new young generation of Africans who are committed to developing the continent’s potential through disruptive innovations. Xuza’s interest in science was triggered in early 1994 when he watched a plane drop election pamphlets onto the rural village he spent time in as a child, a project led by Nelson Mandela to educate the country in democracy. Siya began a project on a rocket fuel that led to an invitation to the 2006 Nobel Prize Ceremonies in Sweden and that was awarded a first place at the 2007 Intel

Science and Engineering Fair - the world’s largest youth innovation fair. In 2008, MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory named a minor planet “Siyaxuza”, found near the Jupiter asteroid belt, in his honor. Siya has garnered numerous other accolades, including a fellowship in 2010 of the African Leadership Network and is the youngest member of the Africa 2.0 energy advisory panel. As a recent graduate of the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where he pioneered micro-fuel cells for mobile energy (distributed energy that could be used to power remote and rural areas), Siya has returned to South Africa as an entrepreneur with a passion for developing solutions for the energy industry. CEO / Wyzetalk

Every business wants to be innovative, but not every business taps into the source of inspiration Businesses today operate within a dynamic environment, shaped by variables, such as evolving legislation, globalisation and economic volatility. Disruptive new technologies create new competitors overnight and the only way to get and stay in front is to constantly innovate. However, innovation is often thought of as the product of inspiration – a spark of genius whose timing or vessel cannot be predicted, or a closed process driven by research and development. The reality is that creativity can be cultivated as a habit – by anyone – and it is better when it draws on a collaboration of ideas. While businesses explore opportunities, throw money at R&D and seek acquisitions that will enable bigger and better products or services, those that understand the power of the social business and open innovation

will know that the idea that will change the business probably already exists somewhere in company. Biography Gys Kappers is the CEO and co-founder of South Africa’s enterprise social business company, Wyzetalk. A serial and successful entrepreneur, Gys sold his concrete masonry business in 2008 in a multi-million rand buyout and took a sabbatical to complete an EMBA from UCT GSB. His thesis on “The delay of social business software adoption in the enterprise and its effects” has gained him international recognition and he now consults to organisations on the quantum shift required in leadership, collaboration, open innovation and on the generational and technological shifts that are shaking business on its head.

Manager: Innovation / Transport for Cape Town

Reducing cost of Access in Cape Town by doing things differently “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them” – Albert Einstein On the 18th October 2012, Transport for Cape Town was established charged with the authority to action the transformation of transport in the City of Cape Town. Central to this challenge is the principle of halving the cost of the user access priority. The establishment of TCT followed an evolutionary and innovative design that shifted the governance of transport services to the commuter. By regulating operators through a common authority that ensures long-term, enduring and investment-orientated management, it ensures a long lasting transport solution. The envisioned outcome of this centralised authority is the achievement of its vision of ‘one’, which includes an integrated public transport network with one ticket, one timetable, a unified management structure and enforcement system as well as a single standard and brand. A dignified public transport system that is integrated, seamless, intelligent, affordable,

sustainable and safe for all. The newly created TCT Innovation Branch will serve as catalyst to the new way of doing and thinking required for the envisioned transformation. The unit will create value through the development of new ideas and solutions for existing problems, the practical utilization of solutions existing elsewhere, as well as the broader diffusion of technologies within TCT’s core service delivery in an integrated an coordinated manner. This cannot be achieved independently. The Innovation Summit will serve as the first of many invitations for organisations and individuals alike to participate in this exciting opportunity to collaborate as Government, Civil Society, Industry and Academia in “making progress possible. THE TRAJECTORY OF ‘RE-BLOCKING’ A CASE OF FORMALISING THE INFORMAL AND INFORMALISING THE FORMAL This presentation will elucidate on and follow the trajectory, in the South African context (which is also appropriate globally), of a developmental strategy know as ‘blocking-out’ which takes heed of the urban poor’s ingenuity and improves upon their adaptations. The pathway to success from idea to implementation, changing mind-sets of the poor and of the state to that of ultimately influencing policy will be tracked as well as how networking and collaboration has fostered global conversations on innovation. At its core ‘blocking-out’ is predicated on organized urban poor communities being at the forefront of and active agents of development. This strategy advocates that through including and not removing the urban poor, informal communities can redesign informal settlement layouts, incrementally upgrade their informal housing (shacks/shanty towns/favelas/ slums) and infrastructural conditions, challenge spatial divisions, leverage state resources and still remain part of the city. • What if we could re-block every informal

settlement in South Africa. This would require the pooling of resources from government, the private sector and the poor in a concerted and joint effort to vastly upgrade the built environment and access to basic infrastructure and services to millions of poor people while they wait endlessly for a government subsidised house. From current precedents SA is already becoming a beacon of light for other countries to follow. Imagine if all informal settlements in SA were to be re-blocked how powerful a global conversation and resultant implementation it would be. Biography Andy Bolnick is an urbanist focusing on bridging spatial divides that lead to tangible change. She is an innovator who thinks laterally and practically. Innovation and Enterprise Development – The Case of the Ethekwini Municipality Innovation and entrepreneurship creates an excellent platform for economic growth in any City. The Ethekwini Municipality has a predominantly urban population who faces the triple challenge of unemployment, poverty and inequality. It therefore has limited resources available for programmes supporting entrepreneurs. However South African government has created an enabling environment for supporting small, black-owned enterprises through Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment framework. Claasen 2006 states that Enterprise Development (ED) where big companies offer operational assistance to small, black-owned enterprises, is a core component of the SA Government’s BBBEE strategy and globally recognised as an effective way of reducing poverty. Schooling teachers and learners by design The issue manifests at secondary (high school) level where design teaching still receives scant recognition within the education system. Design as a school subject remains a major challenge, where its value is not yet fully accepted within the school system, consequently not always well supported and easily stereotyped. Design teachers face these challenges while handicapped by a generalised lack of training and experience in teaching the thinking and practice of design. This paper shares current research insights gained from a World Design Capital Project implemented in the Western Cape to identify certain challenges that educators of design and by extension young designers face at secondary level. Building on key insights,

the paper proposes initial focus points to innovation platforms and policymakers in building a more supportive and productive secondary school design culture. Biography Dr Carla Enslin is a founding member and academic head of The IEE Vega School of Brand Leadership. Vega is committed to producing a new breed of graduate innovators. Carla is deputy chair of the Brand Council of South Africa and a project head of Platform 6, a World Design Capital initiative to promote the practice of design at senior school level. Carla is a Teaching Fellow at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business, conducts workshops and consults widely in southern Africa.

THE BENEFITS OF STRUCTURED INNOVATION The highly esteemed management professor Peter Drucker once said, “Success is more likely to result from the systematic pursuit of opportunities than from a flash of genius. Einstein quoted that God does not play with dice, suggesting that nature was not random. So why would we expect a process such as innovation to be random? Structured Innovation is no antithesis. Innovation is a process of encompassing many steps besides ideation. Ideation can be blue sky thinking and unlimited but within a frame of steps that drive the ideas into concepts and business models. This paper describes the advantages of incorporating a structured innovation process and how it can impact your organization and throughput of concepts. Specifically the benefits described will touch on time to market, strength of concepts, and creating a platform to build on in a repeatable manner. This paper describes tools and methods in fostering innovation in a corporate setting.

ANAEROBIC DEGRADATION OF PRETREATED ABATTOIR WASTEWATER IN AN UASB REACTOR Abattoir plant effluents are categorized under high strength wastewaters which mean that aquatic life can be seriously affected if the untreated wastewater eventually ends up in receiving waters. Previous studies developed threephase separation UASB systems in order to offset the challenges posed by suspended solids floating organic matter. However, the studies failed to determine a specific Organic Loading Rate (OLR) and Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) at which optimum digester performance will be achieved. Therefore, with a view of contributing effectively to the improvement of the secondary treatment of effluents generated in abattoir industries, the main aim of this work was to evaluate the performance of an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor in degrading pretreated abattoir effluent and specifically determining the optimum OLR and HRT at which the digester will perform optimally. This study was based on the monitoring of a UASB bench-scale reactor though analyses of Chemical Oxygen

w w w.innovationsummit.co.z a

Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Suspended Solids in the feed mixture and effluent at varying OLR(s). Pretreated raw wastewater was collected from an abattoir in Freestate province (Parys), South Africa and degraded in a UASB reactor inoculated with granular sludge from a secondary anaerobic digester of a municipal sewage treatment plant. The results proved that the UASB reactor was efficient in the treatment of abattoir wastewater with organic loads in the range of 3.3 – 6.0 kg COD m-3 day-1 and the optimum OLR was 8.7 kg COD m-3 day-1 at a HRT of 18 hrs. Biography James Maati Ondari holds a Civil Engineering Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nairobi in Kenya. A novel engineering design for early diagnosis of breast cancer During her lifetime, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the number one killer of women aged between 40 and 55. There is some hope, though: when diagnosed early enough, breast cancer can be treated successfully. Mammography has saved many lives but has one major drawback: it fails to detect early stage cancers located in dense breast tissue. This is a significant problem since 40% of women have dense breasts and a missed diagnosis can have devastating consequences for the women concerned. At CapeRay we have developed a novel engineering design that combines the best of low dose X-rays and 3D automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) into a single device. This breakthrough technology thus co-registers the images from the two imaging modalities, significantly improving diagnostic accuracy in dense breasts. Our innovative solution has been produced in two models: a dual-modality system known as Aceso that integrates full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and ABUS in

one instrument; and an entry-level system known as Soteria that is a standard FFDM device. To date CapeRay has secured ISO 13485 certification for the company and completed a successful clinical trial of Soteria at the world-renowned Groote Schuur Hospital in October 2012. More recently, in April 2014, CapeRay’s engineers successfully tested their breakthrough Aceso model in a second clinical trial at the University of Cape Town. By early 2015 the company will be ready to secure the CE Mark for both these products. Biography Kit Vaughan’s experience includes a fellowship in orthopaedic engineering at Oxford University, a tenured professorship at the University of Virginia, and 14 years as Hyman Goldberg Chair in Biomedical Engineering at UCT. Young Engineers and Scientists of Africa: A case for developing future leaders of innovation This paper is set in the context of human capital development (HCD) starting at school level. HCD should be focused on a long-term investment for the benefit of the individual as well as the country as a whole. This becomes problematic when the education system fails to develop youth to prosper in a knowledge economy. A link will be made between science, education and innovation to develop a quality feeder stock for a national system of innovation. South Africa’s score card in term of global competitiveness is weak compared to other countries in the region while long terms trends in education and innovation are edging downwards. This comes at a time when the country is in the midst of a social and economic reform process. The Young Engineers and Scientists of Africa will be used as a case study as it focuses on creating a pipeline for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI) to address issues of creativity and innovation.

Design Thinking As A Catalyst For A Culture Of Innovation In Projects The Project Management body of knowledge needs new metaphors as the world in which projects operate is constantly subjected to unprecedented change and uncertainty. Therefore the traditional thinking about project management seems ill suited to escalating imperatives for speed and flexibility required to manage in this volatile environment. Organisations are constantly changing to remain profitable and relevant and hence launching of new initiatives. Strategy is mostly achieved through a number of projects. Hence the management of these projects becomes a key competence that determines organisational success as it speaks directly to the strategy implementation. Consistent in the majority of the corporate South Africa goals is the word “innovation”, which is often interpreted in numerous ways depending on the context and industry. But the common denominator is finding new ways of ‘being’. In this paper, the author uncovers how Design Thinking speaks to this inherent organisational need

CEO of Skopus Business Consultants CFO at Growth Institute

Long Live The Entrepreneurial University? A short reality check The entrepreneurial university may be loosing traction in the South African landscape. It s time to reconsider how the entrepreneurial university needs to work with innovators and industry to grow expertise. Non-technical innovations are also important. Structures at the entrepreneurial university must be in place sooner rather than later. It takes far too long to transform into an entrepreneurial university. • Is the entrepreneurial university relevant for the South African context? It seems that universities still struggle with the concept of building innovation hubs. Some simply do not get off the ground. • What are the forces preventing relevance? Some universities struggle to put optimum structures in place. Internal strife prevent universities to live out their 3rd mission. Other universities place too much emphasis on short courses and neglect innovation. Some disciplines such as Management Science, are not associated

w w w.innovationsummit.co.z a

with innovation. The general public specifically innovators - are not always aware of the role that the entrepreneurial university can play. Last, there is not sufficient pressure from industry to invest into the entrepreneurial university and to demand significant output and collaboration. • What needs to be done? It is time for industry to move close to the universities’ third stream. Innovators needs to be made aware of the possibilities at universities. More specifically, nontechnical innovations need urgent attention. •Are our entrepreneurial universities relevant? Biography Peter van Nieuwenhuizen grew up in Benoni and studied at the University of Pretoria. After more than 28 years in the corporate world (here and abroad), Peter took the step to enter into the big bad world of entrepreneurship. As owner of Skopus Business Consultants,

“Mindless habitual behavior is the enemy of innovation” - Rosabeth Moss Kanter Peter works with innovators and with other entrepreneurs. His special interest is to guide innovators’ ideas and to assist with the development of their innovations. His other interest as a business consultant is to guide small business owners through tough decisions. As co-owner of the Growth Institute, Peter follows his passion to educate the youth so that they can fill the scarce skills gap. Growth Institute provides the youth and business owners with unique opportunities to fill scarce skills gaps. Peter strongly believes that education should be sustainable, relevant and affordable. Peter is an accomplished author. To date, he has published two textbooks in the management field. He has written seventeen articles associated with innovation and management. At present, Peter is writing a book on new paradigms in innovation and in business strategy. When he is not writing about serious subjects, Peter writes poetry. His first anthology should soon be rejected by a publisher! Peter is married to Lynn Duke, a senior lecturer at the International Hotel School. Together, they are writing a children’s’ book for adults, which should go the press somewhere in November. In his free time, Peter reads history, astronomy, biographies of historical persons. On moonless winter nights, Peter is likely to peer through the eyepiece of his telescope at deep sky objects. As an enthusiastic beginner, Peter likes to go on hiking trails (preferably day trails) to soak up as much nature as possible.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGY Enabling the production of environmentally sound products is an investment in the future of the planet. The challenge of transforming the ITC industry into environmental sustainability will create jobs and business opportunities at all levels. Altogether, about 800 000 people have jobs in the field of ICT. Even more people own and use computers, and cellphones. That is certainly a target market worth acknowledging - while doing something good for the planet! Designing environmentally friendly computers - including the use of environmentally friendly components - is a goal worth pursuing. Designing for minimum requirements and taking miniaturization to full advantage, on the inside; while remaining ergonomic on the outside! Computer components designed to work with a minimum amount of electricity would be less prone to overheating, requiring less cooling. Basically, all that is needed is enough electricity to enable the differentiation of a one from a zero!

w w w.innovationsummit.co.z a

The spin-offs of this endeavour could impact the generation and provision of electricity itself, in ways that would benefit the communities, and the environment of our planet. Biography Born in South America, Nora Rasenti has spent most of her professional life in South Africa. A project planner, information systems consultant, and an ITC professional. It has been her interest in environmental issues, coupled with her background in technology that inspired the direction exposed in this paper. As an environmentalist, she is also a pacifist, and therefore does not equate technology with the weapons industry.

CEO / GoMetro

My search for venture capital A constant source of frustration amongst South African commuters is the inability to be certain of the timetables of public transport providers. With specific reference to the Metrorail at this stage, it was often the case that commuters were forced to leave home to head to work extra early so as not to be late, or to leave work early to be able to run errands and/or collect their children on time due to unstable train schedules. A small tech startup seized the opportunity, in collaboration with Metrorail, to combine the knowledge that most commuters carry at least wap-enabled cellphones with them while travelling, with the notion of having real-time information delivered straight to mobile devices and created GoMetro - an innovation that allows commuters to access train timetables and real-time schedule changes from their cellphones. Launched 6 months ago, this platform has grown, now processing more than 600 000 requests per month through the mobile web app. The latest step in a multiphase launch process is the launch of GoMetro v2.0, a

crowdsourced “Twitter for Trains. This presentation reports on a closed beta test of the GoMetro v2.0 application (app), where 75 loyal users of GoMetro in the Western Cape are not only able to create profiles with personalised preferences and have access to entertainment while commuting, but also to create networks amongst themselves to share real-time experiences and shape the app through constant feedback and interaction, whilst forming the core component of and partdesigning the app themselves. Biography Justin is the founder of GoMetro, South Africa’s first realtime public transport app. He has a Masters Degree in Transportation Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch. GoMetro was a winner of the Gauteng Innovation Competition in 2011, and is part of Cape Town World Design Capital 2014. IBM recently recognized the global potential of GoMetro with a Top 2 finish in IBM Smartcamp Africa. CNN recently featured GoMetro as one of 10 African Startups to watch.
