I

f I could turn back the hands of time, I’d mosey on back to the spring semester of my sophomore year when I contemplated applying to spend a semester in Spain studying abroad. Regrettably, I chose not to go—at the time, the mere thought of spending an entire semester overseas was tremendously horrifying, to say the least. Thankfully, Morgan Moorehead, our inspiring cover stunner who spent the last six months in London schooling, granted me permission to vicariously live through her in “Morgan’s Mission” on page 44. In this fascinating must-read, Moorehead thoroughly recounts the ups-and-downs of her journey while she was away—and

hopefully provides a few of you with the push you may need to spend a semester abroad too. For those searching for a spot on the mainland to spend a wellearned vacation, check out “Destination Relaxation” on page 63. Dara Adeeyo, our brilliant deputy features editor, compiled five stops across the country that are fit to satisfy anyone’s taste or preference. Sometimes we travel in an attempt to flee from tumultuous circumstances, and Valentina Steen of Hofstra University unflinchingly shared her tale of leaving Russia and making America her home after enduring abandonment and adoption in “Unbreakable Spirit” on page 31. As always, we have plenty of fashion finds to get you through this eventful stage of the year. From barbecues and fireworks, to concerts and

summer sporting events, July calls for some of the chicest (and comfortable!) pieces. Check out “Firework Frenzy” on page 36, and be sure to pick up some of the bargains in our new “20 under $20” section on page 71. And for those of you who are busy with full-time jobs and internships, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be doing it in style. That’s why I’m delighted to announce the introduction of “No Payne, No Gain,” a compelling style column penned by Christina Payne, our wildly fashionable senior shopping and style editor. In the first installment, she offers her advice on assembling a ready-for-work wardrobe. You can find it on page 13. Wherever you’re travels may take you this summer, have fun, take tons of pictures and be sure to e-mail me at jayemagmike@gmail.com and tell me all about your journey. Have a ball reading the issue!

“hyperthin” isn’t in In a recent interview on The Today Show, 18 year-old model Ali Michael (right) shared her battle with eating disorders and the pain she endured when she was casting for fashion shows in Paris. “I was told my legs were too fat,” Michael says. She also explains that she had been seeing a nutritionist to help her with an eating disorder. “My wake-up call was when I was on a flight from Paris to Texas, my hometown. I put my hand in my head, and a clump of my hair came out.” Michael also missed her period for over a year, and she experienced a constant lack of energy. Amy Astley, Teen Vogue’s editor-in-chief says we are going through a cycle, and designers need to “break the cycle. “I think thin models are the ‘taste’ right now, and I think we need to go in another direction.” How do you feel about the health of the models on today’s runways? Do you think it’s a realistic representation of today’s woman? What do you think should be done to address this issue? Who should be held accountable? Let us know at jayemag@gmail.com.

Bright colors are a must this season, but if you are going to wear them pair with neutral colored, metallic or exotic print accessories. after his debut at London Fashion Week in February, British designer Gavin Douglas showed the fashion industry that he is here to make his mark! with trademarks like jewel-toned frocks and figure-flattering silhouettes, his designs appeals to many fashion lovers. ► “Avant-garde, unique and eclectic” are three words Gavin Douglas used to describe his spring 2008 collection, which he debuted during London Fashion Week in February. So it’s no surprise that his collection epitomizes those adjectives perfectly. His unique fashion sense shines through his funky designs, and it’s obvious Douglas pays intense attention to detail. According to his biography, he carefully researches, designs and crafts each individual piece of clothing, ensuring its uniqueness and quality. The concepts for each collection are developed through sketches,

before patterns are drafted, toiled and transformed into the final pieces. Douglas, a native of Birmingham (the British city; not the one in Alabama) has worked with top designers such as Tom Ford and recently, Elie Saab. “He demonstrated the will, the drive and the certain amount of charm, which doesn’t hurt,” the well-respected Ford said of Douglas. He exhibited his designs at the Black British Style Exhibition at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. The display was a vehicle for the diverse black culture

and incorporated fashion with music, photography and film. “What I like most about London is the diversity,” said Douglas. “It’s a melting pot of different lifestyles and experiences.” Douglas also won first place in Fashion Fringe 2006 in London, England and has showcased his designs in Paris and Brooklyn Fashion Weeks. Douglas’s designs are perfect for the JAYE lady: Full, feminine skirts and dress; pieces dripping with intense colors and silhouettes that show how beautiful our bodies are. Look forward to this pacesetting designer—Douglas is showing no signs of slowing down.

O Payne’s take on this season’s safari trend

chic

in her new monthly column, JAYE senior style and shopping editor Christina Payne renders her suggestions for infusing style into your professional workwear.

Oh, the life of the working woman: 6 a.m. wake-up calls delivered loudly by your alarm clock, eight-hour days, five days a week—let’s face it: full-time summer jobs and internships can be a drag. Tough bosses with unrelenting expectations, tight deadlines that seem to come one after the other and last minute homework assignments can make life extremely hectic and stressful. The responsibilities of a student and employee weigh heavy and JAYE ladies must maintain balance to diminish the pressure. Fashion is an ideal diversion to the challenges in your life, and you can always look Jacket, Marc Jacobs, $370, brownsfashion.com. Skirt, Chloe, visit chloe.com for more information. to fashion as a stress reliever. Your personal style can serve as an avenue to express yourself and showcase your personality outside of school and in the workplace. Luckily, you can bring a little bit of your personality through fashion to those major areas in your life.

Obviously, there are some corporate desk jobs that demand adherence to a strict dress code; but there are opportunities for you to show your stylish side in the industries that provide you with a little freedom with your professional wardrobe. The traditional pant or skirt suit is a classic, necessary piece for your closet. There are ways to inject modern sophistication into this classic workplace must-have. For example, pair a pleated blazer with your matching colored pencil skirt, and don’t be afraid to wear your tallest stiletto pump—it will add a touch a femininity and flair to an otherwise classic staple. Opt for simple neutral colors, like black, brown, navy and nude—these are appropriate for work year-round. Patent leather is very appropriate and very chic! Don’t hesitate to borrow from the boys. Menswearinspired designs are still in demand. Pair your favorite

T

high-waist, wide-leg trousers with a fitted button-up for proportioned silhouette. A popular look is a vest with a ruffled button-up and matching pants—the feminine blouse offsets the masculine appeal of the vest. Invest in long cardigans this summer (and they’ll come in handy in the fall!) and throw them on over your favorite dress for a look that’s appropriate for the office. Reign in the volume created by the cardigan by simply cinching your waist. For an evening out with friends, remove the cardigan, grab an evening clutch, a strand of pearls and you’re good to go. Many employers don’t allow open-toe shoes; however, if they are lenient, peep toes are fashionable and cool, and look great with a pencil skirt and blouse. Ombre, dyed, printed, or woven design in which the color is graduated from light to dark, is in for this season. Avoid strappy sandals for work.

Steer clear of brightly colored bottoms, (with an exception of khakis) although a bright top is appropriate with dark colors in the rest of the outfit. Trust your instincts. Remember although you are being fashionable for work, you are still in a professional atmosphere. Club attire is fashionable but not appropriate or professional. Leave leggings and mini skirts and dresses at home. Save gaudy accessories for a night out. Costume jewelry is okay for work, but be selective. Keep makeup to a minimum—the fresh look is in this season. Always exude a confidence in what you wear! Even on a bad day, a nicely styled look will give you a little boost! Be yourself; you know you are an asset to the company—or you wouldn’t be there. Your personality will shine through what you wear. And, as the legendary Coco Chanel would say, “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” ☐

Be sure to pair this top with a jacket for the office!

secret weapons by Jackie Ihekwaba

When celebrities like Eva Longoria or

Jennifer Garner pocket complements and votes of approval from fashion experts on the red carpet about a dazzling dress or an exceptional choice in shoes, it is commonplace to witness the star thank their stylist way before even mentioning the designer of the piece. It’s intriguing when it comes to dialogue between a designer and a stylist; most of the time whatever the stylist says goes. For example, if a reputable stylist says that they adore a particular dress, but would love it even more on their celebrity client in gold rather than red, then there’s a strong chance, the golden frock will be seen on the red carpet. Celebrity stylists have earned as much authority in the fashion industry as editors, designers and celebrities themselves. They request the best seats on the front rows at fashion shows, attend market appointments to ensure they know what’s now and what’s next and they influence trends thanks to the big-name clients they provide their services to. One of the most famous celebrity stylists, Rachel Zoe, has been accredited to transforming both Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie (who she no longer works with) from missed hits to fashion muses. “Nicole showed up to meet me in an airport once wearing a sweat suit, with a leopard-print neck pillow tied around her neck, an ‘I Love L.A.’ cap, and her hair in pigtails…I think she was doing it to torture me,” Zoe, who charges roughly $6,000 a day, stoically said. But whether you loathe Zoe (critics claim she supports fashion’s unrealistic view on body image—essentially, the skinnier, the better; while others say she craves the spotlight, sometimes at the expense of her clients being forced to take a back seat) or love her (she is credited with pushing forward trends like boho-chic among others), there’s no denying her—and the substantial amount of celebrity stylists—influence on the fashion industry. As small as the role has seemed in the past, celebrity stylists serve as personal shoppers, advisers, and,

sometimes trusted friends or confidants. Some celebrities admit that their stylist is as important as their publicist and other members on their team. So what is the role of a celebrity stylist and what makes a good one? On the surface it seems easy; can anyone be a stylist? Perhaps if you possess key characteristics. A celebrity stylist should complement and enhance the style that a given celebrity already has. You wouldn’t be able to tell that the famous duo Cristina Ehrlich and Estee Stanley have styled celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and Gwen Stefani because each of these women posses a unique look of their own. Richie, in an interview in the July 2007 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, said, “There’s definitely an idea that Rachel [Zoe] styled me and she dressed me every day, like I was her Barbie. That’s not the case. She dressed me for events.” Stylists who treat their clients as hangers, mannequins or dolls enjoy short-lived careers; conversely, those that are attune to what their clients have a thing for, what works for their bodies and lifestyles enjoy successful careers, and favorable reputations. Is the success of a stylist based on how long their client list is? Or are results based on the stylist who has made the biggest transformation like in case of Robert Verdi who gave rapper Eve her polished, red carpet ready look? (Verdi has also worked with Longoria, Hugh Jackman and Fantasia, among others.) There are tons of opinions out ther and that answer seems to still be up for discussion. Whilst it’s true many celebrities utilize the services of a stylist, many celebs that have more than enough money choose to rely on their own intuition. Fashion icons like Victoria and David Beckham, Sarah Jessica Parker, and recent addition to the list, Rihanna all make their own executive decisions when it comes to what to wear. At the end of the day, it seems to be a question of celebrities’ preference: Do I need to solicit the help of a stylist, or I am I confident in my own personal style. ☐

the wackness It’s the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip-hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana--but change is in the air. The newly-inaugurated mayor, Rudy Giuliani, is beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against “crimes” like graffiti and public drunkenness. Set against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Ben Kingsley) for therapy Mary Kate Olsen, and Method Man round out the cast in this edgy, bittersweet, and funny coming of age story. The X Files: I Want You to Believe In grand “XFiles” manner, the film’s storyline is being kept under wraps, known only to top studio brass and the film’s principals. But we know this much: The supernatural thriller is a stand-alone story in the tradition of some of the show’s most acclaimed and beloved episodes, and takes the always-complicated relationship between Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson) in unexpected directions. Mulder continues his unshakable quest for the truth, and Scully, the passionate, ferociously intelligent physician, remains inextricably tied to Mulder’s pursuits.

tunes to bob your head to LLOYD Lessons in Love There’s no doubt that this is a more mature sound from a more mature artist. Slated to release July 22, Lessons in Love is filled with songs that talk about... well, love. With songs like Heart Attack, I Can Change Your Life, Party All Over Your Body and Treat U Good, the question isn’t if the album will be a mainstream hit. The question is who is the teacher who taught Lloyd these lessons? SAMANTHA CRAIN The Confiscation EP If you’re looking for soothing tunes to help you relax this summer, then this is the album for you. According to her official MySpace page, Crain possesses a blowyour-hair-back vocal presence that occasionally yields to whisper-soft vulnerability and unites the sounds of confidence and desperation. Album available July 22. ALKALINE TRIO Agony & Irony Set to be released on July 1, this album, the group’s sixth studio album, offers a unique perspective on the punk rock genre. Songs that you’ll shamelessly fall in love with include: Help Me, In Vein and Into The Night. Fans are urgto participate in a contest to send in footage of themselves playing their interpretation of the song. The band will then decide which performance is best.

NAS & THE “N” WORD Originally scheduled for release in February, Nas’ upcoming album has sparked controversy because of it’s original title. In response to its initial title, Nigger, members in the entertainment and political arenas have voiced their displeasure. “The title using the ‘N’ word is morally offensive and socially distasteful. Nas has the right to degrade and denigrate in the name of free speech, but there is no honor in it. Radio and television stations have no obligation to play it and self-respecting people have no obligation to buy it. Many wish he would use his talents to lift up and inspire, not degrade,” Rev. Jesse Jackson said. Should he have changed the title of his album? Sound off at jayemag.com

the union

praised for its convinience and accessibility; despised for its lack of face-to-face interaction and learning opportunities, online classes have been the subject of many educational discussions. dara adeeyo reports.

cyber learning

A

s the college student becomes increasingly sophisticated when it comes to technology, colleges and universities are finding ways to keep pace with their technically inclined consumer. But is hearing a lecture through the computer screen the same as hearing it in person? Initially, online classes appear as the obvious educational choice. They are cost-effective, efficient and convenient. They allow anyone who is in need of an education, but does not have time to physically sit in the classroom an opportunity to earn a degree. However, just like searching for the right college to apply for, looking for the right online classes to take or online degree to pursue requires time and research. Before you select an institution to take online classes from, you must first make sure that that particular institution is properly accredited, or in other words, the college or university is legitimate, the university has met academic standards necessary to provide its students with a rigorous and comprehensive education and your degree will be valid.

According to universityreviewsonline.com, “Because most students enter an online university to improve their marketability for future jobs, accreditation is very important. Employers look at accreditation as a validation of a degree. A degree by itself is simply a sheet of paper, but accredited it ensures employers that your education has met a certain standard. The second, and potentially more important reason why you should care about accreditation is that you are paying for your education. The university education you pay for should be a quality one, and one way to verify that is through accreditation. Make sure you conduct adequate research and properly examine the website of the online institution you are interested in. And if anything looks peculiar, weird, or unbelievable, then move on and look for a different online institution. The big question is: Are online education options as sufficient as traditional, face-to-face, in-class teaching? In a report compiled by Ken Ryba of Massey University in Aukland, New Zealand, Linda Selby of Aukland College of Education and Mandia Mentis, also of Massey University, students noted an appreciation of the chat room function in Web-based courses. Students claimed that although the

face-to-face interaction is removed, chat rooms, discussion groups and feedback from instructors make up for that loss. On the flip side, detractors say that delays and multiple entries add to an already confusing situation (the online environment). Other pros to online classes from the report include discussion tools that provide a way to “clarify matters and running quick ideas by peers,” and “online classes provide flexibility and the ability to complete my education on my own terms.” Going to class day after day offers something that an online class cannot, and that’s hands on learning. Face-to-face interaction provides students with different perspectives on the given subject, and makes learning new concepts easier for student. Arguably, there are certain subjects that need to be

taught in-person. “I’m a math major and when it comes to math, there are certain aspects of it that need to be taught in-person,” Pascale Ngo, a senior at Hofstra University, the largest private college on Long Island, New York, says. Experts say subjects along the line of math and science require physical attention and are better understood during lectures and in the classroom. Ultimately, to say that online classes are not effective isn’t completely accurate; you are getting an education in one way or another. But to say that it doesn’t offer up the same learning experience as an in-class education is the truth. No matter what happens, in-class education will always be effective. As for online learning, it solely depends upon how disciplined the student is. ☐ What do you think about online classes versus face-toface learning? Sound off at jayemag.com.

any people would agree: There’s no greater bond than the one between a mother and daughter. For Valentina Steen, a senior broadcast journalism major at Hosftra University in Long Island, New York, the bond with her mother never materialized. Steen, a product of Penza, Russia, was abandoned by her mother at age three. “My mother battled addictions to both alcohol and other drugs,” Steen says. “Because my mother’s addiction to drugs and alcohol was so strong—she abused both while she was carrying me—I was born with numerous health issues.” Steen explains that her mother left her in their impoverished home. “Three days had gone by and I had not eaten,” she recounts. “It was not until I began to cry that our next-door →

But the obstacles didn’t stop there. “My native tongue isn’t English, so I had to learn it when I was seven years old. Because of her mother’s alcohol and substance abuse, Steen was born with memory deficit disorder. “I tend to forget things easily, so in order to grasp the English language’s entirety, I was forced to have a tutor at home and at school.” Steen continues to battle this disorder everyday. Academically, Steen admits to having to study harder than her peers. Steen has also had to battle psychological hurdles. “Once I moved to the United States, I had gone through at

least 10 psychiatrists by the end of my high school term,” Steen admits. Most of her ill psyche is a consequence of the absence of a paternal figure. “My biological mother didn’t know my father, and my adopted mother was a single young American woman.” Steen confesses that because she never had a male figure in her, for many years she would try and compensate by dating many men. “Before I graduated high school, I had 15 boyfriends. Because of my situation, I would normally put a wall-up and that would eventually lead to me breaking up with whoever I was dating at the time.” Steen has come to terms with this part of her life with the help of her stable boyfriend who “allows me to put my guard down. “He gets me,” she states. Surprisingly, Steen says she is grateful for her disorder. “It has really taught me the true meaning of diligence.” And her hard work has paid off. morgan’s mission

after spending six months studying abroad, morgan moorehead shares her journey overseas, the importance of family and friends and what’s next for her in her ascension to the top Words by Michael Jones

I

t’s hard enough trekking to class day in and out and handling the obligations of the college student but imagine trying to pull it off hundreds of miles away from home. Morgan Moorehead, a 20 year-old junior at Smith College (a private, independent liberal arts college in Northampton, Massachusetts) participated in the Junior Year Abroad program at Smith and completed the spring and summer terms in London. “I wasn’t afraid to travel because I had been to Europe twice before,” Moorehead, who double majors in American Studies with a concentration in Popular Culture and Media and African-American Studies, explains. “But I was nervous about moving to a new country for six months. Living in London is completely different from coming to visit for a few weeks.” Moorehead says that all students at Smith are strongly encouraged to study abroad during their junior year. “We have an application process and must submit a plan of study to the class dean’s office,” Moorehead describes. “After you submit your application, Smith will review it and notify you of their decision.” From there, Moorehead explains you “apply to study abroad programs as though you were applying for college again.” The process, both tedious and extensive, was “well worth” Moorhead’s “time and energy.” Once overseas, Moorehead endured London’s contrasting approach to academia. “Their college is of independent study then in America.” Moorehead has only written five papers in the six months she has been in the program. “The system here requires students to write long essays that count for your final grade for the class.” Another distinct difference is London’s take on class attendance. “They are not too strict on class attendance and I was shocked because we know in America, your grade is affected if you miss too many classes.”

Additionally, Moorehead has basked in the capital’s social domain. “I have enjoyed having Europe at my fingertips. Since I have been here, I have been to Paris twice, Amsterdam and many cities on England. It has been wonderful to be able to travel to other countries in Europe—the traveling has been amazing; it’s kind of surreal.” Sadly, Moorehead has not been able to keep in contact with many friends in The States as often as she’d like. “It’s very expensive to use my cell phone in Europe. I have been dependant on the Internet for the six months I have spent here.” However, Moorehead phones home at least once a week during the weekend to talk “for a good hour or so.” Moorehead attributes much of

her success to the support of her family and friends (both of whom she proclaims she “could talk forever about!”). “I hold them all close to my heart—in fact, they are my heart,” Moorehead shares. “They are so important because they keep me going and help me get through this journey called life. They inspire me to dream bigger and better dreams for myself everyday. I could never imagine my life without any of them.” Moorehead says they have been there “through the good and bad times and I am so grateful God placed such wonderful people in my life. I love my family and friends—to be honest, they are the reason why I am so happy all of the time!” One more reason Moorehead is so happy all the time is because of

her sorority membership. Moorehead’s sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the first Greek-lettered organization established and incorporated by African-American college women (the sorority celebrated its centennial in January). “It is both an honor and privilege that I can say that I am a member in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Being a part of a legacy and sisterhood of great women inspires me everyday to achieve my dreams and aspirations. I am proud that my organization is an organization of deeply dedicated to service, scholarship and the advancement of the Black Diaspora. I strive to succeed in all of life’s challenges and model the distinction of my Sorors, both past and present. Everyday I work hard for AKA

It has been wonderful to be able to travel to other countries in Europe—the traveling has been amazing; it’s kind of surreal!

My style is very classy and classic. I love to buy timeless pieces and I love ruffles, dresses, high-waist skirts and heels

because we are a sisterhood dedicated to the never ending fight for change and service to all mankind.” Moorehead is equally passionate about her professional developmental endeavors as she is her academic work. Last summer, Moorehead participated in the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program. “I worked as the Tour Development Assistant for The Children of Uganda Foundation. The internship gave me the opportunity to understand the functions of putting together a tour and allowed me the freedom to be creative in a professional environment.” Moorehead says the internship provided great exposure in the fields of development and public relations. “The internship and seminars (interns in the program attend three professional development seminars and workshops during the summer) taught me how to communicate with others and understand the importance of having social skills.” Moorehead calls the experience invaluable because “I know that I will always be able to apply the knowledge that I learned for my future endeavors.” Never one to stagnate, Moorehead (at press time, she returned to America) will spend the summer interning at MTV Networks in New York City. “I will be working in the Development Research department,” Moorehead says. According to Moorehead, development research uses focus

groups, surveys and other tools to provide qualitative and quantitative support in order to develop an understanding of each network’s target audience. “It’s responsible for creating original programming for the networks. This department meets with producers, writers and directors from the inside and outside the company who come up with new ideas for shows. I’m excited for the summer” While Moorehead is busy planning away fresh and innovative concepts for MTV, it’s safe to say she’ll be doing it in style. “My style is very classy and classic. I love to buy timeless pieces,” Moorhead explains.” Moorehead says she loves ruffles, dresses, high-waist skirts and heels, and “of course, I wear my pearls (symbols of the 20 founders of her sorority) everyday no matter what I’m wearing.” Moorehead, who regards Coco Chanel, Vera Wang and Marc Jacobs as influences on her style, frequents Juicy Couture for unique pieces, Forever 21 for trendy, affordable finds and Ann Taylor loft for updated basics and classics. Whether in America or overseas, one thing’s certain: Moorehead is on the fast track to success. With indispensable experience from internships under her belt, an strong academic foundation to stand on and reliable family and friends to lean on, in the words of her pals in London, Moorehead’s life is “pretty ‘andsome, mate!” ☐

My internship taught me how to communicate with others and understand the importance of having social skills

say what?

While in London, Morgan had to acclimate herself to the slang that they used. She was kind enough to share some of these terms!

rave = party skanking = dancing lemonade = sprite pigeon hole = mailbox trousers = pants pants = underwear cheer = thank you tutor = professor toilet = restroom

tea = dinner chip = french fries crips = chips wasteman = loser Now that you’ve got the terms, try to use them in a sentence. Go to www.jayemag.com and post your sentences!

I want to study abroad. Morgan, do you have any advice?

Do your homework! “I’d recommend that you conduct research on the country you are considering studying in.” Moorehead said that research was a major part of her process before she decided on her choice. Don’t pack everything. “I think you should pack half of what you think you need because the space is Europe is small and you will not use or wear most of the belongings you bring with you.” And hey, that’s leaves more room for shopping! Get ready for a culture shock! “Make sure you understand that you will not have most of the comforts that you have in America depending on where you go. I have not seen TV in about six months other than clips I watch online and the TV shows I bought on iTunes. So, if you like movies, I suggest you pack them with you. The magic “B” word. “If you want to study abroad, you must learn to budget! Budgeting has been something that I have learned to do very well in my time here because the exchange rate for American money is rediculous. Every time I spend any money, it hurts to know that I am paying double for everything!” For more information on studying abroad, visit www.studyabroad.com, the Internet’s leading source in of information on educational opportunities for students to study in other countries.

Nevertheless, Cancun IS infamous for its nightlife, so if you my friend are a wild child looking to kick back, relax, and have a good time, well then Cancun, Mexico is the place for you.

Risky Business college students across the country are asserting their creative prowess, taking risks with their personal styles and stepping outside the box. fashion features editor jackie ihekwaba explores the reasons why students have loosened the style shackles.

I

“I’m neither in the past nor avant-garde. My style follows life.” Coco Chanel’s perspective on her personal style rings a certain tune of familiarity today. Now more than ever, its become apparent how much of a role fashion actually plays in the life of a college student. I remember a time when it was perfectly normal to see a wave of students on campus wearing checkered pajama pants, oversized hoodies, and Uggs. In those days, it was no secret that comfort was key; however, when I walk on campus now, many students are following the same trend—daring to be different. Both girls and boys can equally be seen taking meticulous consideration into what they decide to put on in the morning. It’s tough to determine whether this new found sense of fashion is due to inspiring shows like The Hills or more recently Sex and the City: The Movie or if the idea of fashion in general is transcending into all areas of life that do not exclude the college classroom. Whatever it may be, I think its safe to say that we as college students have found a new comfort in becoming fashion forward and taking risks, and it seems the transition from the runway to the streets is a smooth and effortless one. The question now is: Where did this new inspiration to take risks come from? I’m proud of my fellow student when I see one taking advantage of a fashion trend that happens to be of-themoment. I smile to myself when I see my girlfriends walking toward me in gladiator sandals or when I see one of my guy friends passing by wearing a properly tied scarf. But when I witness one of my friends unexpectedly taking a bigger risk with their wardrobe, it’s undoubtedly a breath of fresh air. It’s obvious the college students are very judgmental, and one step outside of the monotonous status quo could result in whispers, laughs and other forms of ridicule. So, where that burst of courage to take a risk comes from? Undergraduate Jerrell Jones thinks he has the answer. “In my

I see something I like, then put my own twist to it to make it my own.

Alonzia Stephenson (above) has found a personal style that fits her perfectly. Chic, body-flattering dresses, simple basics with pops of color and trendy pieces like wide-leg trousers and high-waist skirts are some of Stephenson’s favorites. But she has been able to build a strong personal style because she isn’t afraid to take risks. “Finding a style that works for you is kind of like trial-and-error. Sometimes you just have to keep taking chances, and you’ll find your look!”

opinion, fashion is being different and taking risks. It expresses the self that we attempt to showcase, even if it is not our actual self.” He confesses that at times he thinks twice about an outfit, but that flash of uncertainty is quickly replaced with confidence in his style. I think that his outlook on it all is an interesting one that I agree with. At times, I find myself waking up and feeling punk rock, preppy or at other times afrocentric. I don’t consider myself to be any one of these, but as Jones puts it, my look for a day doesn’t have to necessarily be “me” and that’s where the risk taking comes in; you have to dare to be different. “Honestly, a lot of my inspiration to be different does actually come from TV,” Alonzia Stephenson, an undergraduate at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, admits. “I see something I like, then put my own twist to it to make it my own. Shows like Project Runway and America’s Next Top Model helped me see that it’s actually cooler to not look like anyone else,” she affirms. The modern-day college scene undeniably confirms this perspective. Some say that college is the ideal time to “find yourself” and to be different and it makes perfect sense that this is also true with style and fashion. And for those of you are still battling with the whole “take a risk” thing, I offer encouragement from iconic fashion figure Christian Dior, “Fashion is an expression of faith. In this world of ours, that seeks to give away its secrets one by one, that feeds on false confidences and fabricated revelations, it is the very incarnation of mystery, and the best proof of the spell it casts is that, now more than ever, it is the topic on everyone’s lips.” ☐

pretation on menswear for women, as well as the late, iconic fashion designer, Coco Chanel. She tells JAYE how she fell in love with fashion as early as grade school, “I remember not wanting to play at recess because I did not want to get my new dress dirty!” In high school a fashionista was born. “My peers wondered why I wore pumps every day to school, but I fell in love with fashion at an early age; it stole my heart, locked it, and threw away the key.” Ariel’s entire life revolves around fashion. “I stay fashionable because I live and breathe fashion— the magazines I read, the TV shows I watch are fashion based. I have a true passion for fashion.” Burke graduates this summer from the University

of South Florida in Tampa, and she will use her degree in advertising to develop a career in the fashion industry as an art director for top fashion magazines. She discusses the latest trends and all things fashion in her blog, Fashion Devotee. She also focuses on the lack of black models in the fashion industry in her other blog, Fierce Blackness—she is a busy JAYE lady! Burke’s fashion and style philosophy comes from the aforementioned Chanel: “It is the unseen, unforgettable, ultimate accessory of fashion that heralds your arrival and prolongs your departure.” Look for Burke’s name in major fashion magazines in the future. Until then, admire her for her perfectly classic yet trendy style!
