Memo from mike

FEBRUARY 2009

my saving grace ■ My big sister saved my life. OK, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but here’s the backstory: A little over two years ago when I was a misguided, couldn’t-care-lessabout-my-future sophomore at my university, my sister sent me an e-mail with a link to a prominent internship program — she’d participated in the program two consecutive summers — and told me to check it out and to see what I came up with. I brushed it off as one of those “third-parent moments” all older siblings are guilty of having and nonchalantly checked out the opportunities on the link. I found a few that piqued my interest, and amazingly, I earned an internship at a contemporary art space in Dallas, TX. Fast forward to today: I’ve had four internships, traveled

the country on freelance assignments, won tons of awards and learned some valuable skills that help me edit this magazine each month — all because my sister cared enough about me to try to set me on the straight-and-narrow. My internships helped me clarify my career aspirations; I’ve built an extensive network of wonderful people, including former interns, supervisors and contacts that still come in handy all the time; and my self-confidence rose exponentially when I took a look at all I had accomplished throughout my years as intern. That’s why I’m thrilled Jillian Risnes, our fabulous features editor, organized a package starting on page 66 supplying you with all you need to snag your dream internship. In it, you’ll find

Noel Armstrong, our stunning cover girl, found her saving grace. In “Noel Never Gives Up,” penned by Jackie Ihekwaba, Noel says, “I credit poetry as the reason why I never harbored any hard feeling towards my parents.” Read the rest of her intriguing story on page 52.

■ After finishing her latest project, All My Sons, a broadway play that wrapped up last month, you would think Katie Holmes would get a break. Think again. From traveling to and fro to various events in the thick of awards season, to her role as mommy to almost-three-year-old Suri, Holmes, 30, always has something on the agenda. But the Dawson’s Creek alum does it in style with closet full of versatile pieces that she mixes and matches to keep up with her always-on-the-go lifestyle.

Stephanie Taylor Fashion Director ■ Don’t overdo it. I always choose a focal point, and make those the center of attention in my outfit. Too much going on leaves room for disaster! Whether it’s a bag, a shoe, a necklace or a blouse, pick one and let it shine! ■ Labels aren’t everything. I won’t lie, I’m a fool for Juicy Couture but I love finding deals at the local Ross, TJ MAXX or even Target. Style is based on the individual; don’t get caught up in labels. ■ Heels are the most amazing gift you can give to your feet. They are not practical for walking to class, but when it’s time to jazz it up and step out, a fabulous pair of heels can turn a tank and jeans into something amazing. ■ When I shop, I don’t go with a purpose. I just shop. If I go looking for something I never find it. If I try to put an outfit together it never works. I just buy a million different individual items and somehow come up with something new

every time it’s time to get dressed to go out. ■ I have to be comfortable. If I’m pulling at it, adjusting or being poked and pinched in any way, I can’t buy it! I like things that flow. I’m very thin but in most things I’m not a fan of form fitting clothing. I love a lot of fabric! Not bulky, but something that provides dimensions rather than just a tight tank top or tight dress. Leaves a little something to mystery. ■ Ruffles and bows. Maybe it’s the girly side of me but I absolutely love ruffles and bows. It screams femininity and is bold yet soft at the same time. ■ Sweats. I love fashion and I love getting dressed up and looking and feeling fabulous, but there are days when I just feel like being in sweatpants and sit at home watching TLC and BRAVO all day. If I’m gonna do sweats, I can still be fabulous and rock the VS Pinks or a velour tracksuit, either way I’m still lounging but not looking too grungy.

“Maybe it’s the girly side of me but I absolutely love ruffles and bows.”

Whether it's just to go to the mall, to the movies, or to hang out with the girls, make sure your outfit is comfortable enough to tackle these tasks. I stock my closet with versatile pieces that can work for all occasions. ■ Allow your outfit to show who you are. Personally, I like to feel comfortable and look stylish. I like wearing blacks with a mixture of accent colors. It shows my serious but playful side. ■ Oversized handbags are a must! Ladies, we carry alot of things in our purses so, invest in a big handbags in a neutral color made out of a sturdy material. I also love that they double as book bags during school semesters. ■ Experiment with different looks. Its easy to stay consistant with one look, however, it is very refreshing to switch it up every now and then. If you are someone that hardly ever wears a dress

or skirt, try one out with flats, if that makes you feel any better! And if you find yourself always rocking jeans and a tee, try a dress with a classic pump and cardigan for a modern-preppy look. ■ Every wardrobe needs skinny jeans! I am a skinny jean fanatic! When wearing anything from stilletos to boots, skinny jeans are a wonderful must-have! And now they are accessible to all body types because designers and retailers are making skinnies with ample stretch in them to create flattering sillhouettes for all women. I shop at Forever 21 for mine. ■ Layer it up! During the colder months, I love to wear layers upon layers, but people don't realize you can layer in the spring too. Just make sure the pieces you are layering are light fabrics. ■ Don't be afraid to over accessorize! I'm a heavy jewlery wearer, in most cases, so I try to go all out in that department. Big hooped earrings, several bangle braclets, long-large necklaces, and rings — the more the merrier! >>

“After working hard and taking care of all of life's responsibilities, I believe that it is OK to treat myself.”

Chandler Stephens Market Director ■ Take your time. Going into a store and walking directly to a section that you like can usually guarantee a good find. However, don't be afraid to explore different sections, styles, and stores — you never know what could be waiting for you to buy it! ■ Tone it down. A good measure of style is to stop before walking out of the house and take off at least one accessory. I never want to look like I am trying too hard to be fashionable. ■ Be bold. To give an outfit vitality and glamour, I always incorporate color. On a pair of heels, a handbag, or a blouse, color can bring together an outfit and also be a conversation piece. ■ Splurge! After working hard and taking care of all of life's responsibilities, I believe that it is OK to treat myself. No matter if it is that pair of Steve Madden's I have been eyeing or a coveted Gucci bag, diligence deserves a reward. I just

make sure that I have enough money left over for other priorities. ■ Denim. My mom says that I have too many pairs of jeans, but I disagree. I think that denim is the key point of any wardrobe and it is helpful to have a variety of styles and washes. In my closet I have dark, light, medium, black, grey, and colored washes, all varying in the cut (straight, skinny, relaxed). This gives my wardrobe diversity. ■ Borrow from the boys. Sometimes wearing shirts, sweaters, or pants that are oversized can make you feel more comfortable, and it can also set one outfit apart from a sea of conformity. For example, a larger sweater or shirt with skinny jeans is a quick and casual trend. ■ Be innovative. Think outside the box. I have purposely purchased shirts three sizes too large and turned them into dresses or tunic tops. Another fun thing to do is to turn colored pantyhose into headbands or a necklace into an elaborate bracelet. Use your creative intuition! ■

Noel Never Gives Up By Jackie Ihekwaba

“W

hen life gives you lemons make lemonade and when it gives you tomatoes make a Bloody Mary!” I’m not too sure who the originator of this realization is, but whoever it was may have been on to something! As naturally self-absorbed beings, it is so easy to become wrapped up in our daily trials and misfortunes and we sometimes think that our chipped fingernail right before a hot date is as important or even more important than spending the quality time with a unique individual. We say it’s essential to stop and smell the roses but do we know anyone who actually does? Well, after sitting down and talking to Noel Armstrong, I think I have finally found someone who lives by this mantra. Not only does she face the some of the same troubles that we all encounter with a the-glass-is-half-full perspective, but she also does it with a smile on her face. Noel has gone through her fair share of hardships and has experienced far more than most women her age. With a free spirit and resilient attitude, Noel recounts her childhood memories and recollections that made her the preserving woman she is today.

Family “I have eight siblings, but I’m

the only product of my mother and father. They were never married. My dad is from LA’s South Central and just got out of prison for selling drugs. My mother is really artistic and was a dancer in Japan in the ‘70s. I think that’s where I get my artsy side. I lived with my dad up until the 8th grade when we were on the news because of a drug bust. I moved around a lot after that. I lived in Texas with my mom but she was in and out of rehab due to her cocaine addiction. When she was in rehab I lived with my grandparents and godparents. Even after all of this I still hold family values in high regards. Family has always been important to me.” On Her Most Traumatic Memory: 54  JAYE | FEBRUARY 2009

“My mother is really artistic and was a dancer in Japan in the ‘70s. I think that’s where I get my artsy side.”

trauma “I think the most traumatic memory

I have is being on television in the 8th grade. Everyone at school saw it and knew my dad was in prison. It was kind of embarrassing. Then shortly after that because my father gave the police some information on who he was dealing drugs with, one of my brothers got shot in the chest five times. I was really shy back then and everything that happened was a lot for me to swallow.”

Poetry “I started writing in the 8th grade — wow, I never realized that was around the same time as the whole drug bust thing. I wrote about love and life. I credit poetry as the reason why I never harbored any hard feeling towards my parents and it actually wasn’t until I moved to the suburbs when I realized that my life was different from others. (laughs) In south central everybody pretty much lived the same way.”

life lessons “I saw a lot of things that my

parents went through and it made me not want to experience any of it at all. For example, many kids my age use college to experiment with drugs, etc, but I have never done any of that. All in all, I think that my upbringing made me a hustler. I got my first internship at Morgan Stanley at 16 years old; I pay my own tuition, rent, and college expenses. I’ve always had a job but I don’t have a car so that lets you know I can get things done even when there are mounds of obstacles in my way.”

friends “It’s funny because I’ve never had a lot

of friends but I know a lot of people. That probably has a great deal to do with the fact that I’m very nomadic. I’m very out of sight, out of mind so you and I could be best friends now, but once I move I probably won’t stay in touch.”

love and sex “I don’t doubt that my rela-

tionship with my father or lack thereof has a direct correlation with my dating habits now. I didn’t start dating until my junior year in high school and I’ve always dated guys that were way below my standards. That way, I felt like I was in control and when things went wrong I could always just pin it on them because they were messed up to begin with. As you can see I still have things to work on. (laughs) I’ve never had the desire to get married or have kids. I get bored easily so the whole marriage thing definitely isn’t for me I don’t think. Furthermore, I don’t really have the orthodox standards when it comes to women and promiscuity”

success “I think success is excelling in some-

thing that you’re passionate about. I would be very content and would deem myself successful as a stylist, model scout or any job within the fashion industry. In the next seven to 10 years I see myself living in a studio apartment with a dog somewhere in Soho — a life much like Carrie from Sex and the City.” ■ JAYE | FEBRUARY 2009  55

L

aissez Les Bon Temps Roulez, also known as “Let the good times roll” is a phrase that is often heard through the streets of Bourbon in New Orleans, Louisiana during one of the most festive holidays of the year: Mardi Gras. When people hear the two words, thoughts of rowdy celebration, beads flying through the air, purple, green and gold masks from ear-to-ear, and of course floats parading through the streets of New Orleans. JAYE magazine wants to show you not only how to enjoy this festive week at home, but if you are planning on visiting the Big Easy, how to plan the time of your life. Early Planning is always the Plan. There is nothing worse than driving all the way down to New Orleans, Louisiana and not having a place to stay. Plan early! Already have your hotel arrangements done months in advance. Be mindful that this is

one of the biggest holidays celebrated down in the Big Easy, so reservations are limited. Make an Itinerary. I know this might seem like middle school field trip with your parents, but it’s great to know at least an idea of what you plan to do during your weekend stay. It is a party town, so you should have no problem planning little ventures you want to partake in the midst of all the chaos on Bourbon Street. There is great eats in this town, so pig out! Know Your Alcohol Tolerance. People in this town literally party all night and sleep in the streets! You do not want to become a victim of this ridicule. If you’re of the legal drinking age, throw a couple back, but be sure you know your limits. You might leave with more beads than you bargained for, if you know what I mean. Get to the Parades Early. I would dare not give tips without telling you to have fun! Be safe and “let the good times roll!”

The economic unrest is affecting college students in ways unimagined. In a U.S. News report, Colleges and universities are seeing more students unable to pay their second-semester bills and in danger of being forced to drop out, according to a survey by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. More than 65 percent of the 43 college registrars who responded to an association-wide e-mail survey said that they had noticed an increase in unpaid bills this year. Most colleges don’t let students register for a new semester until they have at least paid their bills for the previous semester. The report continues, “ther colleges are scrambling to help students find every penny of federal and state aid available. Iris Godes, vice president of enrollment management at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, Mass., says many of her low-income students tried to avoid taking out student loans last semester but have run out of money. She’s now helping them fill out last year’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid so that they can get retroactive grants and loans for last fall, as well as money for the spring semester.

The Ultimate Romantic-Weekend Getaway: College Edition  By Britney Darnell Who said you could not plan an amazingly romantic weekend on a next to nothing? We show you how Don’t expect to be swept off your feet as you drink champagne over rose petals in Milan this year, instead go for the more affordable and less pocketstrenuous route. Here are some easy tips to plan an exciting and starry-eyed weekend getaway: ■ Start in the city! The city that you live in, whether it is big or small, always has something to offer. Log on to your city Web site and check out the entertainment and nightlife tab to get the latest on the romantic festivities happening in your home town. You never know, your city or town could be the spot that other

romantic couples come to visit for their special weekend. ■ Find the ideal spots! Local lodging and hotel deals are everywhere during this time of year, so there should be no problem in finding them. You are more likely to get a quicker response and even a better deal that was not offered on the site by calling the hotel venue directly. Check on special packages and coupons that the hotel offers to save money, so that you two can focus on one another! ■ House or Apartment Swapping! This can seem pretty daring, but it is always worth a shot! If you and your loved one are looking for a change of scenery for your romantic weekend, try swapping housing arrangements with close friends or even family members.

There is always someone in the family who owns that beautiful condo or beach house in Miami, Florida; it’s about that time to start rubbing elbows with them! When dealing with close friends in this instance, it is always best to swap with friends from other cities, so they can experience the greater part of the city that you know and love and vice-versa. ■ Romantic Getaway at Home! There is nothing like spending time with a significant other like you would in the comfort of your very own home. Spice up the scene a little by preparing a delicious candle-light dinner for two, watching romantic movies, taking out the slow jams, and pulling out the sexiest black dress you own. Have fun and be safe! Make it a night that the two of you will never forget.

Preparation

Rarely is success achieved without preparation. The same is true as college students begin the daunting search to find the perfect internship. Often, this task is seen as unnecessary unless required, and if required, put on the shelf for, well, who knows what reason and how long. Don’t be confused, there are a significant number of students who understand the importance of such an opportunity. However, too often in the rapid cyclone that is college, students are left with very little time to take on such a big project. While the lack of time and the abundance of stress are undoubtedly apparent in college students worldwide, the necessity of work experience an internship can provide and the preparation required to obtain one seemingly worthwhile is crucial in this current job market. Many of the elements suggested in landing the perfect internship are very similar to or the same as those required when searching for a career. Considering the notion this preparation could very well ease the process for crossing that somewhat frightening threshold often referred to as the “real world, it may be sensible to squeeze in those extra hours. Take advantage of the available resources. This is not limited to the internet. Often, school libraries will have a large section designated directly for internship seekers. Each student is different and will go about this process in a unique way. Students that spend some time looking at various companies or internship programs and keep track of those preferred over others are ahead of a great deal of their peers. Another resource students often unknowingly forget to use is the aid of the career resource center or familiar professionals. It can be a mistake to forget or refuse to ask for help putting together a resume and portfolio. A well-built, concise yet admirable resume can immediately move an internship candidate into the top applicants. It may also be helpful to attach a few letters of recommendation which focus on praiseworthy characteristics. Once these elements are put together, send out resumes noticeably earlier than the deadlines as it will very likely intrigue employers.

Do your research!

So, where do you begin in taking the initial leap into this thorough, decisive process? Determine the attributes you would like or need in an internship: >> Is it in your industry of choice? >> What department is it in? >> Is the internship paid or unpaid? >> How many hours a week will it require? >> What time of day and year is the internship? >> Where is it Located? >> Are there travel opportunities? >> Will you receive academic credit? >> Is housing available? >> Is a degree required? Several additional elements can and should be considered along with the above list. It can be a vital mistake to skip this simple step in the process as it often leads to committing to an internship that does not satisfy what a student had hoped for or needed. There is an immense amount of information readily available to students today; let’s thank our luck stars for the technology boom. While this vast amount of information is wonderful, it can also be very difficult and time-consuming to sift through. Therefore, having a list of needed features will help to narrow the results.

additional copies of your resume. Assuming the employer still has the copy originally sent and, for a lack of better terms, being stuck like a deer in headlights when another is requested could reduce the chances of securing the position. While research, adequate attire, and a portfolio are all extremely important aspects to a successful interview, a student should also come with enthusiasm and a smile, as these traits are both noticed and contagious, a practiced handshake, proper manners, please and thank you go a long way, and finally, questions. This is a time to learn from a professional in the industry, and a few good questions will convey to the interviewer that this candidate is truly interested in the internship as well as relaxed in the atmosphere. >>

Students whom have put in the extra time and effort to thoroughly complete the preparation process may be called to come in for an interview or, for those farther away, asked to take part in a phone interview. Interviewing is frequently the most important step in obtaining an internship; nevertheless, this time is a real opportunity to practice for the most important, thrilling interview still to come, the one for your future dream job! Researching this particular company or program once again is very wise. What is more impressive than an internship candidate coming in and being able to talk about company operations, clients, and past successes? If nothing else, it will help the interview conversation to progress smoothly and, in turn, keep the interviewee more relaxed. Dress the part. On a first interview, it is better to be overdressed than the alternative. Often it depends on the organization and industry, but simple is generally better. Gaudy jewelry or flashy, stand-out pieces of clothing, while in other circumstances would be considered fabulous, may draw the attention of the interviewer away from the dialogue being shared. Also, it is never to early to begin tucking away awards, letters of recommendation, papers and projects that received high grades, or any other elements which might help identify past achievements or commendable traits. Again, ask for help in putting together such a portfolio and make sure it includes several

Persistence is one of the greatest contributors to success. Many consider that the relieving step onto the pavement of the parking lot after an interview as the end to the process of obtaining an internship. In part, they’re right. This is a time to review and to applaud yourself for all you’ve done, it did not go unnoticed. There is, however, a final step which will sincerely prove the level of desire you have over many others for the position. Take the time to hand-write a thank you note for the interviewer’s time, knowledge, and consideration. It will contribute, sometimes a great deal, to the company or organization’s final decision. Many employers keep thank you notes for years to come. Snail mail, as we Generation Yers so cleverly refer to it, may be out-of-date, but there exists a personal touch and an authenticity in a hand written, hand signed note.

In addition to a handwritten thank you note, it’s also appropriate to follow-up with employers, especially if don’t get back to you within the time frame they gave you. Many times, they’re swamped with tons of work and have forgotten.

“What do I say in my thank you note?”

Thank you notes can be short and sweet. Normally, the mere thought goes a long way with interviewers. Below is an example of what to say in your thank you note:

It’s supercompetitive out there, so don’t give up if you are overlooked for an internship you applied for. Below, how to bounce back: ■ Don’t take things too personally. Lack of competency isn’t a reason for not getting an internship. It may be because you’re not the right fit for the company. Don’t get discouraged. ■ Ask why. If they don’t tell you, politely inquire the employer to discuss why you didn’t earn the position. It will help you in the future. ■ Don’t burn bridges. If you make a good impression with employers, many of them will forward your resume to other companies searching for internships, even if they don’t select you for the one you initially applied for.

Internships after college? Yep, many recent grads aren’t being inactive during the treacherous job market. Instead, they’re earning valuable experience with companies in the industries they aspire to work in. Also, people who have been laid off or fired are going after internships to prevent any dreadful gaps in their resumes. ■

When Will It End?

Now that we're in the thick of a recession, how are college students coping? Britney Darnell explores the aftermath of the economic collapse and how college students around the country are surviving

jaye economy

tutor2u.net

W

e are in a recession. There it is. No more guessing or pondering—we are in one. What does this mean for college students? For starters, it’s a beast securing student loans and finding a job once graduation is upon us. Many college students are used to cutting corners to cover the cost of tuition and associated expenses, such as housing, groceries, clothing and gas, but with thousands of job cuts each month, our futures being compromised by bushels of bailouts and rising tuition and fees — it’s obvious we’ll need to cut back more. Financial astuteness and smart money management cannot be taken lightly, and students are realizing it. Whitley

Wiltz, a junior physical education and health major at Georgia Southwestern University in Americus, Ga., says although budgeting can be stressful it is vital to surviving the pangs of the recession. “Not spending as much is best because many people are facing unemployment, and that makes it much harder,” Wiltz says. Think about ways you can cut down on spending and save money. Coupons are a great way to save what little you have as a struggling college student. Catch the bus transit offered at your university, or if that’s not an option, look into purchasing a bike or walking to campus. Start saving up money now to help pay back the college loans you will owe once you complete your higher education. According to a study released by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education (NCPPHE), the cost of attending college has risen nearly three times the rate of the cost of living. Staggering statistics like these makes it easier for students everywhere to realize the importance of the situation. “College tuition continues to outpace family income and the price of other necessities, such as medical care, food and housing,” a NCPPHE expert says. The study also reported in order for students to stay enrolled in college, they are putting themselves in more debt this time around than ever before, and that borrowing money from loans and other means of currency gathering has more than doubled over the last decade. Talk to your university registrar officials about different programs the school has allocated to help students during times of economic tension. Some colleges have potential plans in hopes of students borrowing directly from the institution instead of private lenders. Other schools are using the fast-paced life of debit cards to return refund money instead of using checks in order to be more sustainable and efficient. Michael Richardson, senior business finance major at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX, says college students should be knowledgeable of the stock market because it can make or break them. >> JAYE | FEBRUARY 2009  73

jaye economy

To stay in college and earn their degrees, students are borrowing money in unprecedented numbers. The state of the economy is making it even harder to obtain aid.

“During a recession period, consumer confidence levels are lowered as the market on certain assets are down. It is important to know about the stock market because as a trader, you would lose a lot of assets for the simple fact that the normal value of assets will not be in its normal state during this time,” Richardson says. Richardson also points out the banking issue in response to credit card limits given to college students. “When a recession occurs, banks tighten up on credit and will not extend credit like they normally do,” Richardson says. “Although this is the best time for first house buyers, you can be assured that you will not get one if your credit is not good.”

74  JAYE | FEBRUARY 2009

Be mindful of your credit card limits, and if in debt, make sure the bills are paid and written off of your credit report. There is nothing worse than being fresh out of college with bad credit. ■ Another question on the minds of college students is the money put into better development of the universities. Renovating departments and libraries, building new stadiums in the place of old ones that were operating adequately, or hashing out more money into the alumni center to attract more of them, but is it worth it? Every student should take pride in their school, but is it at their own expense? This question can only be answered by the students. Get

involved in your student government and learn more about what you are spending your money on when it comes to given up the big bucks to pay for schooling. If you are voted against, you will still know what you were fighting for. Try to make sense of the stock market. The mere thought of the two words may be overwhelming, but the more you know about it, the less financial strain you will find yourself in the long run. Consider where you want to be after graduation. Be proactive and figure out what you want to do with your life and how you can help yourself. Or follow Wiltz' advice: “We can’t solve the recession, but we can help our economy by putting money back into it.” ■

You don’t have to have a significant other to celebrate V-Day. Be sure to smile and show yourself a little TLC on this special day.

single and sassy It’s OK not to get into the lovey-dovey shenanigans that accomany Valentine’s Day. After all, you don’t have to be attachd to enjoy the day. Robyn Sapenter shares her pointers on how to celebrate and flaunt your independence

L

ast Valentines’ Day, while your friends and their significant others were sending roses, receiving chocolates, and enjoying romantic evenings, you were home, reorganizing magazines, your closet, and shoes. It was then you declared, “No more miserable Valentines’ Days!” So this year, even if Cupid’s arrow missed you again, being single on “the day for lovers” doesn’t have to spell sorrow. Read below and to see 5 ways to go beyond ‘enduring’ Valentines’ day to actually celebrating loving yourself Valentines Day! One: Remove the words cope and survive from your vocabulary! You are a strong minded, intelligent, and determined— Valentine’s Day does not change that. Begin your day refreshed, excited, and full of gratitude. Remember, yesterday could have been your last day. Don’t waste one frown line thinking about what is missing from Valentine’s Day, but focus on making the day that much better! Don’t struggle through it; instead, make it a great day. Two: Don’t go searching for anything, but be ready for everything. No, your ex-boyfriend from 5th grade is not sending you flowers and your first real love is not going to come crawling back with a diamond ring … or will he? Either way, today is not the day to look under every rock or around every corner for unexpected tokens of love. On the other hand, the unexpected dinner or flowers may show up at your home or your job. Don’t let your cynical side stop keep you from appreciating tokens of affection that may come from your friends, family members, or even your exes. Understand the gesture for what it is, a simple way of saying, “I am thinking about you!” Feel the warm fuzzy that comes with that, and keep on going! Three: Celebrate with others, not as a third wheel. Even though it may feel like you are the only single person in the world, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that over 80 million Americans will spend Valentines Day alone, but that does not mean that they are lonely. If there is a party, go! If there is a dinner, go! If there is any event, go! Celebrate your fabulousness by flaunting your self. If the means are available, throw a party yourself. Celebrate with ‘Un-Valentine’s Day’ Party — just a silly escape to remind you and your single friends that love is everyday, not just Valentines Day! Do something to step out of your comfort zone, and see what develops. >> JAYE | FEBRUARY 2009  77

jaye living single

Five: Celebrate you and not others. Don’t compare yourself to anyone. Valentine’s Day is about love, and who better to love you than, well, you. Indulge in a shopping spree, get a pedicure, bathe in milk and yogurt, light candles and pamper yourself! A relationship does not define or confine you, and just because you are not in one, does not make you a person less deserving of love. So if you are that person who watches others holding hands, secretly wishing that was you, remember the same issues that were plaguing their relationship on February 13th will be the same issues on February 15th. Just because they are kissing sweetly on Valentine’s Day, does not mean that they are enchanted with their partners. ■

Who need a companion when you can celebrate Valentine’s Day with your closet girlfriends being silly and having pillow fights?

78  JAYE | FEBRUARY 2009

Valentine’s Day No-Nos Be sure to avoid these V-Day hazards! ■ Don’t drunk dial. It’s not worth it, and let’s face it: In the morning, you look like a fool. ■ Don’t overeat. Extra ice cream, chocolates, and cake will only make the treadmill an after-Valentine’s Day enemy. ■ Don’t whine. No one wants to hear it! It will give you a headache —and others. ■ Don’t fake gift. Sending yourself a token is nice, but 24 long-stemmed roses? Who are you fooling? Everyone knows your single, don’t make it worse. ■ Don’t get desperate. There is nothing worse than rolling over Feb. 15th regretting the face beside you. If you do, be safe, be smart and wrap it up!

pro.corbis.com.

Four: Plan for the future. Now this does not mean making a love potion for the sexy hot guy three seats over in your poli-sci class, or planning an imaginary wedding. Instead, you should look inward by focusing on making yourself better. Whether it is by planning a trip, or creating a personal development plan, make Valentine’s Day about improving the wonderful inspiring person you are. Keep concentrating on where you are now and how to achieve where you want to be. Once this step is complete, put it in a place where you can view it everyday, keeping your future in constant view.

While some may say that being a black woman in America is the worst double-minority, others celebrate the rich heritage that comes with the extra melanin in the skin. So, what are some of the challenges black women encounter today? Let’s start with the hair. Whether you hair is natural, permed, braided or weaved, very

few African-American women will dispute the ingenious contribution of Madam C.J. Walker to the field of African American hair care. Why is this important? Simple: for decades, black women have used their textured hair to make social and personal statements. From the psychedelic afros of the ‘70s to today’s bone-straight bobs inspired by Rihanna, black women use their crowns to set the stage for the bigger, better production: their personal style. In the book, Style and Status: Selling Beauty to African American Women, author Susannah

Walker details how black women’s beauty were similarly influenced from white women’s, all the while remaining distinctively different, because of the racial politics that surrounding them. While the preverbal struggle has since ended, many professional black women identify with the unspoken rule of assimilation in the work place. The idea of having distinct femininity, without showing sexuality, individuality, or heritage is often times communicated without words. From the clothes that frame our curvy bodies, to the shoes that accentuate our shapely legs, black women personify strength and royalty. African descent is secretly unacceptable. We, who are subjected to this silent rule, are the very ones who repeal it. We challenge the norms, while staying within the bounds by having our own “swag,” which compliments everything about us. From the clothes that frame our curvy bodies, to the shoes that accentuate our shapely legs, we personify strength and royalty. Unfortunately, many times African-American women focus on style, while sacrificing health. Black women have the highest rates of being overweight compared to other groups in the United States. Statistically, about four out of five African American women are obese or overweight and black women report little to no physical activity past the age of 18. African-American women are also at risk of many more health issues simply because of our genetic make-up. While some risks like diabetes and high blood pressure are indicative of our nutritional habits, other more serious issues have begin to attack the black woman with a vengeance. The rise of HIV/AIDS has unexpectedly increased in the black community, with a focus on a new victim: the African-American woman. In 2006, a staggering study reported that black women are 23 times more likely to contract HIV/AIDS than other races. 84  JAYE | FEBRUARY 2009

A study by the Kaiser Family Foundation showed that in 2001, 20 percent of HIV-positive African-American men said they had sex within the past six months, compared to nine percent of HIV-positive white men and four percent Hispanic men. The study also showed that those infected with HIV are more likely to spread it within their race, some more likely to spread it within their own community. HIV/ AIDS can no longer be classified as a gay white man’s disease or an illness spread by a crack-head prostitute. The new face of AIDS could be your mother, or more importantly your own. The power of black women has grown from the slave ships off the African coast, to the plantations of America; from the ghettos of South Central Los Angles, to the White House. It is fair to say that AfricanAmerican women share wonders and sadness unseen by many. Everything from the love of a son, to the disrespect found in the word bitch—black women have endured it all. From the strength of our mothers and other strong women, we see hope and in these women we see a force that personifies sacrifice, hope, spirituality, and most of all love. A love we always give to others, but owe to ourselves. ■

Obama says he will streamline the financial aid process by eliminating the current federal financial aid application and enabling families to apply simply by checking a box on their tax form, authorizing their tax information to be used, and eliminating the need for a separate application.

■ Obama will require insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions so all Americans regardless of their health status or history can get comprehensive benefits at fair and stable premiums. ■ Obama assures Americans he will create a new Small Business Health Tax Credit to help small businesses provide affordable health insurance to their employees. ■ Obama will also lower costs for businesses by covering a portion of the catastrophic health costs they pay in return for lower premiums for employees. ■ Obama says he will prevent insurers from overcharging doctors for their malpractice insurance and invest in proven strategies to reduce preventable medical errors. ■ Obama will ensure everyone who needs it will receive a tax credit for their premiums.

taxes ■ Obama will cut taxes for 95 percent of workers and their families with a tax cut of $500 for workers or $1000 for working couples. ■ Obama promises to provide generous tax cuts for low- and middleincome seniors, homeowners, the uninsured, and families sending a child to college or looking to save and accumulate wealth. ■ Under Obama’s plan, middle class families will see their taxes cut — and no family making less than $250,000 will see their taxes increase. The typical middle class family will receive well over $1,000 in tax relief under the ObamaBiden plan, and will pay tax rates that are 20 percent lower than they faced under President Reagan. ■ Obama will simplify taxes by merging existing tax credits and enabling as many as 40 million middle-class Americans to do their own taxes in less than five minutes without an accountant. ■

“The middle-class need a rescue package. That means tax cuts for the middle-class. We’ve got to fix our health care system, we’ve got to fix our energy system. You’ve got to have somebody in Washington who is thinking about the middle class and not just those who can afford to hire lobbyists.” – Barack Obama JAYE | FEBRUARY 2009  91

Full-time class schedules, exams, study groups, jobs, and much more — it’s no surprise that many college students are stressed. But do you how anxiety affects you? Read on to find out

>> According to ehealthmd.com, under sudden stress, you will get a burst of exceptional strength and endurance, as your body pumps out stress hormones: Your heart speeds up; blood flow to your brain and muscles increases up to 400 percent; your digestion stops (so it doesn’t use up energy that’s needed elsewhere); your muscle tension increases;and you breathe faster, to bring more oxygen to your muscles. The site continues, “Sometimes we can still benefit from this “fight or flight” response — like the case of a mother whose child was pinned under a concrete slab during a tornado. Under stress, she found the strength to lift the huge slab with her bare hands, even though it later took three men to move it. But much of the time in modern life, the “fight or flight” response won’t help. Yet those stress hormones still flood your system, preparing you for physical action. And if you are under stress frequently, it can harm your physical health. How to deal with stress? Ehealthmd.com suggests using the TARP method. The TARP method teaches simple techniques that can be used any time, anywhere, to control your response to stressful situations. It consists of four steps: T is for “Tune in”: Start noticing early signs of stress. A is for “Analyze”: Think about the source or causes of your stress. R is for “Respond”: Deal with the cause of your stress, and its effects on you. P is for “Prevent”: Develop good stress-reduction habits for a healthier lifestyle. ■ 124  JAYE | FEBRUARY 2009

The signs of stress >> Headaches Many headaches are caused by stress. Tension headaches feel like a band tightening around the head. Relaxation, just like tension is a learned response. >> Back and neck pain In mind body medicine, there is a clear relationship between lower-back pain and stress. With regular massage, both the mind and body relax. >> Insomnia To combat this, breath deeply and relax your body starting with your toes and working your way up to the top of your head >> Heart disease The body’s release of adrenaline during stressful events raises the heart rate and blood pressure. Adrenaline also stimulates a release of fat from the fat cells into the blood stream to supply energy for the fight or flight response. If unused, this fat is deposited on the arteries. The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that indicates that surges of blood pressure can trigger heart attacks in susceptible people. Repeated elevations of blood pressure over periods of weeks and months accelerate atherosclerosis (thickening of the arteries) thereby increasing the risk of heart attacks. >> Sore muscles Stress related aches and pains occur when the muscles contract in response to stressful events, increasing the production of lactic acid and leading to pain. >> Peptic Ulcers In a stressful situation your digestive system slows down, freeing your body’s energy for fight or flight. The stomach however continues to excrete acid, and ulcers may develop. Source: floatation.co.za.

Obesity is killing us

Diets that consist of french fries and fast food, too many nights that end in drunken escapades, and students who choose reality TV instead of facing the truth: If we don’t get our act together, our weight will cause our generation’s demise. Ariel Burke reports on the dangerous and deadly epidemic

By 2015, it is projected that 2.3 billion will be over weight and over 700 million will be obese.

Obesity is a major health epidemic facing Americans. It is estimated that approximately 1.6 billion Americans over the age of 16 are overweight and 400 million are obese. According to World Health Organization (WHO), by 2015, it is projected that 2.3 billion will be over weight and over 700 million will be obese. the statistics are for overweight and obese men and women of all ethnicities. Unlike cancer and many diseases obesity can be prevented and cured. A regular exercise routine is essential in maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle. Research has proven that exercise is more effective in losing weight and keeping it off than just changing eating habits. As the body ages, the metabolism slows down but exercise gives the metabolism a boost to help you to continue to burn calories. Exercise

should be followed with healthy eating habits to be successful. Begin to monitor your eating habits by keeping a food diary. For a month, write down everything you eat or drink and the amount. This will help you to evaluate your eating habits and make changes. Choose one bad habit at a time to break. After you have succeeded in breaking one bad habit pick another. Changing your eating habits should be gradual. Exercise and eat healthy to prevent being overweight and obese. ■

February is Heart Health Month

■ According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability. Almost 700,000 people die of heart disease in the U.S. each year. That is about 29 percent of all U.S. deaths. Heart disease is a term that includes several more specific heart conditions. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which can lead to heart attack. Coronary heart disease is the principal type of heart disease. There were 494,392 people that died from coronary heart disease in 2002. That is about 71 percent of all heart disease deaths. For more information, visit cdc.gov.

Health Headliners ■ To help people face the daunting task of divulging an STD diagnosis to sexual partners, inSPOT, a peer-to-peer, Web-based system developed by the nonprofit Internet Sexuality Information Services and the San Francisco Department of Public Health, offers carriers of STDs an opportunity to inform their partner of their status via e-card. According to U.S. News, The cards, which say things like, “No one wants to be the bearer of bad news...but I got diagnosed with STDs (You might have one, too),” can be sent to up to six people, anonymously, or they can include contact information with a personalized note. They can be customized for various infections, including gonorrhea, chlamydia, crabs, and HIV. Since inSPOT’s launch in 2004, more than 30,000 people have sent more than 49,500 of the cards, and more than 750 people browse the site each day, according to the site’s creators, who share an early evaluation of usage in this week’s PLoS Medicine. Privacy isn’t an issue, since there is no database that stores E-mail addresses or details about senders and recipients. And while misuse by pranksters is a possibility, fewer than 10 recipients have complained since 2004 of receiving a message in error. For more information, visit inspot.org.

In a recent issue of her magazine, Oprah Winfrey attributes her constantly fluctuating weight to a thyroid condition. Do you know what the function of the thyroid? Your thyroid gland is a small gland, normally weighing less than one ounce, located in the front of the neck. According to endocrineweb.com, the function of the thyroid gland is to take iodine, found in many foods, and convert it into thyroid hormones: thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Every cell in the body depends upon thyroid hormones for regulation of their metabolism. The thyroid gland is under the control of the pituitary gland, a small gland the size of a peanut at the base of the brain.

February welcomes a positive message to Aquarians: Despite the bleak economy, finances will look up for you — but spend wisely

Taurus April 20-May 20

lauren conrad

Aquarius January 20-February 18 Money matters are looking very positive right now and so inevitably there is a desire to spend. However, it would be wiser to hold onto your cash until something that you really need comes along. Emotionally, you are feeling a little down mid month and a friend should be able to put things right.

Pisces February 19-March 20 As the last sign in the zodiac, Pisces is often rightly regarded as the wisest of all the signs. This month, though, there is a danger that you will let your own feelings get in the way of sensible decision making. Rash words at the start of the month may have repercussions later on.

Aries March 21-April 19 Money will be important this 134  JAYE | FEBRUARY 2009

Confidence is always a good thing, but it can be misleading. Don’t leap into anything just because you feel positive that it will work out. Advice is important this month so don’t be afraid to ask. A close friend will need a lot of emotional support at the beginning of the month.

Gemini May 21-June 20 A loved one will continue to be demanding this month and this will put a strain on your patience levels. Work or school is also proving difficult right now and what you really need is some fun. Luckily, this will arrive courtesy of an old friend although you may have to wait till the end of the month.

Cancer June 21-July 22 Unusually, you will be feeling in an assertive mood this month. You should use this new freedom to express your true feelings about certain issues in your key relationships. Discipline is needed when it comes to money and you may need the support of a friend in this area.

Leo July 23-August 22 Remember that in your relationships it is your personality and not your wallet that people are really interested in. You have being too extravagant lately and you need to cut back a little on your spending. The hidden benefit is that this will help you understand who your true friends are.

Virgo August 23-September 22 Emotionally, this is a very cosy month as you will be experiencing feelings of mutual contentment and understanding. However, there is a danger that you may put this at risk by continuing to focus too much on more materialistic concerns. Perfection is not always a requirement!

Libra September 23October 22 You should be feeling fully refreshed right now and so this is a great time for starting new projects, particularly if they have a practical element to them. Your love life is a little complicated right now and you need to make some decisions about your future even if you are reluctant to do so.

admit it, like all Scorpios you have a deeply competitive streak running through your personality. You need to keep an eye on this tendency now or it could cause problems within a friendship. Romance will be tricky as you feel emotionally distant.

Sagittarius November 22December 21 Your energy levels are at their peak right now and you may be tempted to bite off more than you can comfortably chew. Don’t let yourself get pulled in too many directions right now. Focus on one thing and give it your best shot. Romance may blossom at the end of the month.

Capricorn December 22January 19 For once your over riding concern with success in the material sense is put on hold as the planets put you in touch with your sense of fun. This is a great time for putting the passion back into a relationship. If you are single then this month will see you gaining a number of admirers!
