PRODUCT - TREJDEKSNIS ORIGIN - LATVIA

TREJDEKSNIS Trejdeksnins is one of the oldest Latvian Folk instruments, used when dancing or singing to add a sound by shaking the instrument or hitting its handle against the back of the palm. The instrument is commonly used in the Folk dance and music festivals or concerts. The folk instrument consists of a wooden handle running through three metal discs, which are decreasing in size from the bottom to the top. To each horizontal disc are small triangular metal rattles hanging, which in turn create the sound when hitting each other.

THE

SITE

FIGURE GROUND MAPS Figure grund maps show the closest amenities, for example, where workers of the factory could go for a lunch break or the routes, from which cutomers could come in to the building. For example, the green areas show the closest open possible spaces, where people are spending time, thus a larger activity. Moreover, it can be visible that the business area is around the site, therefore there is a great flow of people in the mornings and evenings, before and after work hours. This can mean that to not oveflow the traffic, the delivery cars should come later that the heavy traffic times. Shops, services, cafes, bars and restaurants are all around the sie, thus understanding that there is a great attraction of tourists and just visitors trying to spend time. Furthermore, it shows that there is a greater chance from visits by passbyers and that the workers can have unch hours outside of the building.

MAKE The vignetta is representing the atmosphere that would be created in order to represent the origin of the instrument, thus educating and creating an interesting experience for the visitors. Trejdeksnis is an old folk instrument, which is mostly made in Latvia by independant steel and wood workers in small shops, workshops that have a medival feeling to it. Mostly there is a big fireplace, where the metal is meltedand made into shapes at the workshop, same with the handle. Mostly one worker makes the entire insturment, however, the factory will have seperate wood and steel workers, to speed up production of the instrument. In order to represent the medival style that is in workshops in Latvia, where the instruments are made, the play with lights is very important. Firstly, the lights would be dim, yellow like to represent melted steel and the room would have an old factory feeling, which would be represented by metal detailing and large machinery.

EDUCATE

Because the main purpose of the building is to create a journey, where a person can customise their own musical instrument and learn about it in the making of it. To represent the atmosphere of the educate space, the vignetta shows interactive installations and posters, as person can walk around and learn for themselves through interactive experiences like talks, games and performances. Moreover, the room is better lit than the make space, gradually changing from darker to lighter atosphere.

SELL The environment of the each space gradually becomes lighter, the selling space being the lightest. Moreover, the selling space ould still maintain the factory feeling with the shelves being made out of uncommon things like pipes. Moreover, to maintain the style of the instrument, same materials would be used like steel and wood. Because the selling point would be the last part of the journey throught the building, where the visitor pay for their custom instrument, there would be a seller and different shelves with historic instruments, and other instresting designes.

CONSIDERABLE MATERIALITY

POSSIBLE COLOUR CHOICES

In order to represent the style of the musical instrument into the building, natural tones and materials were considered. For example, because of the wooden handle, the detailing of the building or the outer shell was to be created out of wood. Moreover, because there was an interaction between the building and sunlight in mind, the use of glass was considered and for the basis something natural and soft looking - concrete. From the chosen materials it was able to create a colour pallette of the building, which matched the natural colours of the chosen materials.

AXONOMETRIC FLOW DIAGRAM

The second floor is the final step of the journey throught the building, where the visitors can see displays with historical instruments and different types of them. Moreover, the visitor can take a seat and enjoy either concerts showing how to use the instrument or talks about the origin of it, etc. After deciding if the visitor wants to buy something more, they go up to the desk to pay for their custom instrument and the visit.

The first floor the factory (make) space, where the visitor from the ground floor comes up and goes from one station to another starting with choosing the wood for the handle and metal for the circular discs. In each station the visitor learns how it is made and th symbolism of possible detailing, etc. After each station the visitor continues to go up the stairs to the second floor.

The ground floor is mostly used as an enterance and reception for customers, where a person walks in, says their name, reservation, etc. and then proceeds to go up the stairs to the factory section, where the person can begin their experience in the factory section, where they can build their own personal instrument.
