goals already this season, an average of two a game. While you could argue the fixture list has not been kind to Southampton, they have work to do if they are to climb out of the relegation mire and will have targeted a home game against Swansea as a ‘must win’ encounter.

Michael Laudrup had spoken in the week of the importance of this fixture, and even suggested that the game at St Mary’s was more important to Swansea City than so called glamour fixtures against the top clubs in the country, these games would have more bearing on the progress of Swansea City this season.

For Swansea there was no Danny Graham which I found surprising. Given Southampton’s poor defensive record this would have been an opportunity for the striker to put some chances away, but he missed out through injury so Michu kept his place in attack. Nathan Dyer started on the bench against his former club while another former Saint, Gary Monk, continued in defence in place of the injured Chico Flores. Former Swansea transfer target Jack Cork made his first premier league start for Southampton, while highly rated seventeen year old Luke Shaw started at fullback up against Pablo Hernandez.

Nigel Adkins has done a remarkable job down on the south coast, leading the saints to back to back promotions. They have some really exciting attacking talents in Adam Lallana and £12 million pound signing Gaston Ramirez, while Rickie Lambert has made his way up through the leagues and always carries a threat, Southampton do have goals in them and following an impressive 4-1 win over Fulham early in the season many expected Southampton to push on and build on that result. However, when promoted sides do not strengthen the defence you are always likely to struggle, and though Atkins brought in young talents in Nathaniel Clyne and the emerging Luke Shaw, the fact remains that Southampton have conceded twenty nine

The hosts started well and went on the offensive from the beginning pressing the Swans high up the pitch with Ramirez and Cork getting some good early touches and trying to create for the home side. Swansea grew into the half and began to exert some pressure of their own; Southampton got their interceptions in though and frustrated the visitors. Ramirez had the first real chance as he flashed a shot wide before Ki had a shot blocked at the other end. Ben Davies was then called upon to make a superb block following a Lambert freekick to prevent Ramirez giving Southampton the lead, the young left back putting in another assured performance. Swansea goal had little or nothing to do. The second half brought the brunt of the action as the home side went for it. When your back is against the wall you either come out fighting or go under, and I must credit Southampton because on the evidence of their second half performance, if they are to be relegated, then they will not go with a whimper. Adam Lallana went close again as did Ramirez before Routledge wasted a golden opportunity for the Swans, blasting over after good work on the counter by Michu and De Guzman. Then came the first of two penalty shouts for the home side as Saints captain Lallana went down under a challenge from Ashley Williams, it looked a good case but he was booked for diving. Southampton continued to press and eventually the opening goal came as a ball into the box was missed by Monk and Morgan Schneiderlin was presented with a simple chance to head beyond Tremmel. The German could have come for the cross I felt and replays showed he came but then moved back towards his goal, and perhaps that moment of indecision cost us, but it was no less than the hosts deserved for their efforts. Newly promoted sides learn harsh lessons early, and bad decisions are punished almost every time, we leant that against Manchester United where one bad pass from Rangel and one sloppy finish from Sinclair cost us a share of the points, and Southampton were given a similar lesson. A bad pass from the goalkeeper to his centre half let Dyer in as he pounced on a poor touch and produced an excellent finish to draw the Swans level. Perhaps not a deserved equaliser, but good sides pickup points even when they are not at their best, and Swansea did that at St Mary’s.

There was enough time for a final penalty shout from Gary Monk’s challenge on Lallana before the final whistle, and definitely a point gained for the men in white. Laudrup will not be pleased with the manner of the performance having stressed the importance of this fixture to his players but he can be satisfied that they continued to play their game, and didn’t panic despite going behind. We have already recovered points from losing positions this season and while it would be nice to go ahead and hold a lead for a change instead of coming from behind, the fact that we continue to do so will stand us in go stead going forward, unbeaten in three now in all competitions, and a comfortable nine points clear of bottom club QPR building to a busy Christmas period. It’s hard to single out one man from the clutch of ‘off days’ in the Swansea camp on Saturday, however I though Ashley Williams looked back to his imperious best, making a number of important blocks and marshalled the dangerous Lambert, while Gary Monk organised well from set pieces as we coped well with the bombardment we were subjected to. Ben Davies was my man of the match, another quality performance from the young man who is growing game by game. Southampton threw everything at Swansea in that second period and could only draw, I feel we can play much better than that and have proven so against top quality opposition already. A good point all things considered. Until next time! Matt

Pl Rang Suhpt Tremmel: 7.5/10 Is this the same guy that played against Stoke last year? That game he was awful, scared the hell out of me and didn’t look in anyway assured. He was once again solid and good distribution, no fault for their goal

Davies: 6.5/10 Not his best game for me, at times got in the wrong position but pushed up well at times and got past winger which I like to see him do. He’s one of the first team squad now, I don’t see him as a youngster thrown in deep end

Rangel: 7.5/10 Makes things happen, a lot of our chances came through him and he’s always solid at the back. I mentioned that I thought he’s been best right back in the league this season and got ridiculed in pub but I stand by it

Williams: 7.5/10 Solid enough, I think he likes playing alongside Monk. Won most headers and looks more assured with the ball at his feet, getting back to his best.

Monk: 7.5/10 Brilliant but marked slightly down for a poor challenge that should have been punished with a penalty and a possible finger to point at for their goal but he looked brilliant apart from those 2 slight incidents.

Ki: 8/10 Made 2 challenges in the second half which kept us in the shout for a point,, both vital and last ditch, picked up an injury from the second. He looked brilliant throughout though, he seems like he has more time than anyone else which is a sign of a top player

Britton: 6.5/10 Like JDG not great, mopped up like he always does but we need one of the middle three to step up when we have spells without the ball and both Leon and JDG seem to be not existent at these times.

JDG: 6.5/10 Not his best game for me. I’m guessing that the deep corners were tactical but we are not going to score like that and things just didn’t come off for him

Hernandez:7/10 Was involved in a lot of our good play, his final ball was just missing today with many passes nearly putting a player one-on-one with keeper.

Routledge: 6.5/10 Didn’t really create an awful lot, I wont be too surprised if Dyer gets picked ahead of him for Newcastle. Nearly finished a brilliant move with his last kick of the game. He done fine but without being explosive

Michu: 7/10 We need to clone him and put one in the midfield as well. He didn’t do anything spectacular and didn’t really have a chance to score but in those quiet spells where the midfield goes missing he steps up, puts that added fight in and wins free-kicks, 50-50s and stops the momentum against us.

Dyer Brilliant finish, explosive as ever, who would have thought a manager at Swansea would have such a selection dilemma. I don’t care which 2 of the 3 start each game because their all quality Schechter He had a decent run out today, the best part of half and hour and he didn’t do anything at all. I don’t want to criticise him but I can’t see why Moore hasn’t kicked a ball since changing the game v Reading. Kemmy He’s a bit like marmite with lovers and haters and I’m in the former bracket. I keep bringing up these ten minute spells when nobody steps up to the plate but Kemmy does and did for the brief period he was on. He spread the ball well and I think he’s knocking on the door to start if fit because of that reason. 9

Southampton 1 -1 Swansea Chalkboard Review 70 minutes in to this game, I had the feeling that this blog was going to be a fairly sombre affair, comparing the performances against Man C, Liverpool and Chelsea with a defeat to Southampton and how we still hadn't scored an away goal since the 5 v QPR. Nathan Dyer's superb finish however means that everything's far more relaxed and there's still a sizeable gap between Swansea and the bottom 3. Overall, Southampton had 16 attempts compared to Swansea's 7, the second half in particular belonged to Southampton with 11 attempts:

It was a busy day in particular for Ashley Williams, who made 22 clearances in total, twice as many as the next player (Rangel) and more than the entire Southampton team.

Overall, Swansea made 54 defensive clearances to Southampton's 17 Aerial duels were a bit of a mixed bag with Rangel winning 5 of his 8 and Michu 4 of his 7 (I don't have the stats to hand but I'd expect that Michu wins a far greater percentage of aerial duels than Danny Graham). With regard to take-ons, Swansea were successful with 3 of 13 attempts compared to Southampton who had 6 successful from 13.

Swans Aerial Duels and Take-ons. Pablo successful with just 1 of 7 attempted take-ons

Overall, not a great performance but a huge result, more for the two points less for Southampton than the one for us. I think the squad has it in it to finish around 12th-14th but until we're mathematically safe, keeping the bottom three as far away as possible is the main concern.

Having a hard time buying Swan shirts in Denmark, would like to hear from fans around the planet, can you buy the swan shirts in your own country? Order it through the official online shop. Worked for me when I bought mine (I live in Denmark). Bought this season's in Holland, so yes! Germany, yes In the US, I normally use onionbag.com, soccer.com, or UK's kitbag... but no luck getting one there. It's a classic shirt, love the Swans badge! I want Michu #9 shirt unless KI.S.Y changes his name to "KI" on the back of his shirt. nope. i'm in the US. i'd have to order online. i have also never met another Swans fan in person. Going to Seoul sometime in the next 30 days so I might pick up something there but I'm worried it will be asian sizes and no viking sizes I see the official store only sells 3XL - I usually use 3-4XL so I'd be unhappy shelling out 63 quid + shipping to Asia just to find it too small. 200 a day being sold in South Korea, mostly with KiSY on the back From the US here too, and no, there are no Swansea shirts for sale in the greater 2000 mile radius from where I live. Funny thing though, in nearly 20 years of supporting the Swans I've only had a few "who's that team?" questions whilst wearing a Swans top around on match days. Then, in the past few weeks alone, I've had about 10 people automatically recognize and know who Swansea are...even if only because we were playing their club on the day (you know...Chelsea, Manchester, Arsenal, blah, blah, blah...) It still blows my mind somewhat to think it wasn't that long ago I was happy with a solitary point, at home, to the likes of Macclesfield. Swn10 History against Chelsea: Chelsea and Swansea have played each other 22 times since the Swans joined the League in 1920. The first clash was on 21st November 1925 at Stamford Bridge, Swansea famously winning 3-1, the Swans having gained promotion to the 2nd Division after their Championship-winning season in 1925. The first game in 1925 was an exciting affair, and in front of a crowd of nearly 44,000 Jack Fowler, Billy Hole and Len Thompson scored to give the Swans a famous victory. The “Chelsea Chronicle” was full of patronising stuff about “Gallant little Wales”. Welcoming the little club from Wales, the programme pointed out the appalling Swans’ away form (3 points so far) in contrast to their home performances. Chelsea were on a run of 14 games undefeated, so it seems fair to assume that they underestimated the Swans and were duly punished. There was a connection between the clubs, in that Swans’ manager Joe Bradshaw was a former Chelsea player, along with the Swans’ Scottish goalkeeper Jock Denoon. The overall record reads Swans: W5 D8 L9 (including this weekend’s Liberty game). The teams have only met once in a cup tie, in the League Cup in 1964. All the other fixtures before the Swans reached the Premier League have been in the 2nd Division (now the Championship). The last time Swansea were in the top flight (1981-83) Chelsea were a 2nd Division club. (Little Known Fact: current Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard Jr. Played on loan at the Vetch for a season in 1995-96. He appeared in 9 league games and scored 1 goal away at Brighton). 100 Years Ago: Just a Welsh League away fixture at Treharris to quicken the blood this weekend 100 years ago. The Swans of course still in the Southern League Div. II. The Supporters’ Club had reached 300 members, and it was announced that a new stand would be built at the Vetch capable of seating 1,000 people! They seem to approach the game in a good way. A lot of promoted clubs play kick and run, but Swansea (at least last year, I haven't seen them this year) have tried to play proper football, and they've done it well. I was disappointed with the lack of games McEachran got when he went on loan there last year, as I felt he could have certainly played more for you. They'll stay up with any problem, probably comfortably mid-table. Above Liverpool hopefully. When they first got promoted I hated the idea of a welsh club in our main league but swansea have grown on me. They way they have approached the league is a great example to all teams looking to get into the premier league that you don't have to change your philosophy once you are actually in it. Swansea have proved it is possible to come into the league and pass teams off the park. I remember watching the arsenal game last year and in the 93rd minute when they were 3-2 up they were still passing it and refused to just lump it down the pitch and give possession back to arsenal like alot of teams would do. I think they are easy on the eye, have a good football philosophy. They are obviously well managed as the last few managerial appointments have been progressive. They raise there game for the big sides, especially at home, but can be a bit lightweight vs the lesser teams (much like Chelsea were before the Hoddle era). I don't feel any animosity towards then, unlike Cardiff. Swansea have been fantastic, refreshing too, you often see promoted teams come up pry to play good football and get slaughtered but Swansea didn't. They'll comfortably stay up this year in my opinion and will probably finish higher than Liverpool. I agree above aswell I don't like Cardiff but I like Swansea. A great footballing side, lovely to watch and are good for the league. Michu looks a hell of a player and you have good organisation at the back. I think the team will go through spells of playing really well, winning lots of games, and also runs of defeats due to the philosophy of the style. I like Swansea, and they don't seem to be missing Brendan in the slightest. GOOD CLUB....GOOD TEAM.....GOOD GENERAL FOOTBALL ETHIC.......GOOD SUPPORT.......Wont be able to achieve too much in premiereship due to funding. Probably my second side in the prem. The way they beat Arsenal last season was awesome. Great side. Look forward to a good game on the weekend. I think they are a good team and play some decent football, but i'm going to be controversial here and say that they shouldn't even be playing in the Premier League, and if Cardiff ever get in i will say the same about them too. A team representing Wales in the English Premier league will never sit right with me. I get annoyed when people say that clubs like Chelsea and Man City are ruining the English national team's chances but we have a Welsh team in the English Premier League full of youngsters from Wales, tell me exactly how that is helping the English national team ? I see no benefits for the English national team by having Welsh teams in our league. History dictates that they are allowed in, thats the way its always been with the FA back then! No other teams will get in from outside England now though. They are both exceptions

M r e n But the league has never been run for the benefit of the England team anyway. Every club looks after themselves. In any case, Swansea have a Danish manager and most of their players aren't even Welsh. It's just a historical quirk that they ended up in the English league. There wasn't a significant Welsh league until fairly recently, and they have been in the English system for nigh on 100 years now. They come under the English FA's jurisdiction and aren't even allowed to play in the Welsh FA Cup any more. Swansea have been up and down the divisions and earned their place on footballing merit. I don't see the problem. As to Swansea, I quite like them. They're well run, they play good football and it's always good to see a promoted team do well (so long as they aren't called QPR or West Ham). Their open attacking style should suit us on Saturday, assuming we don't turn up expecting a stroll. You lot seem to suffer from a lack of discipline. Michu is one more card away from a suspension and the fouls where he's been carded have been of the lazy, needless variety. Nathan Dyer was famously brought on at the start of the second half, only to be dismissed within 13 minutes because he pitched a fit at the ref and then made an awful challenge. Chico got a red because he tried to clear a ball above an opponent's head. That aside, I've been impressed with your play so far this year. I remember one match earlier this year where you strung together an absurd number of consecutive passes, something like 35 or 40 at least. Might have been against West Ham. I like what Laudrup has done and like the look of this year's team better than last year's. Replacing Sigurdsson with Michu was brilliant, it's just a shame you couldn't benefit financially from Sigurdsson's sale. Getting as much as you did for Allen was solid business and Laudrup's invested it well to bolster the squad. You were really in dire straights for a bit after Taylor's injury and Chico's suspension, but you came through it about as well as could be expected. I watched your match against Citeh the other day and felt you were really unlucky not to score a few more times. Definitely looked the better side. All in all, I've been impressed. I'm not sure why you were expecting abuse. You're not our rival, you play football that's enjoyable to watch and you just embarrassed Liverpool in their filthy hole. Looking forward to an exciting match tomorrow. Simply you cant not like Swansea imho. Great side to watch, dont spend huge money but seem to be spending wisely. This year you could of fallen apart with second season syndrome and losing Allen and Sinclair but seems like you've pushed on. I like the stadium as well. Swansea are a decent side, lost a couple of important players in the summer but they've been well replaced. I must admit I was pretty surprised (definitely in a good way) when Michael Laudrup of all people came into fill Rodgers' shoes, but he started out very well, and anyone who can coach that kind of form out of Wayne Routledge must be doing something right. Looking forward to the game, although I do feel like Swansea are always capable of a result at home and are very much a team to be wary of. It will be very interesting to see how the possession battle goes. I don't have any 'beef' with the Swans at all. Actually, I've been rather impressed with some of their performances and they have some players in their side that I hope will become big names in the near future. No way I can see Swansea getting relegated any time soon, they play a good game and will keep us on our toes this weekend. I don't mind Cardiff to be honest. Noisy supporters make a good atmosphere and I'm sure a Welsh derby would be a welcome additional to the PL. Huge fan of Laudrup's and you play very nice football. Hope it is not nice tomorrow though but I expect i to be an open game and some goals as well. 2-3 Chelsea. I hate Cardiff, therefore Swansea are okay in my books. Like others I didn't want a Welsh team in the English Premier League but the football you play (and the fact it must p*ss off Cardiff!) has changed my mind on the matter. Think you'll stay up without too much problem, you may not set the world alight but if you establish yourself within the next few seasons, much like Stoke, and buy bigger and better players then who knows what lies ahead?
