Words From Jack Swan

I will let you into a little secret here. Some of our magazine issues are a nightmare to put together. Over 10,000 words every month (most of which are comprehendible even if spelled incorrectly) can at times become a lot like work, especially during a dull month where little really happens. It is very fair to say that this issue wasn’t one of those.

Where to start? It’s been a crazy few weeks for the club. The Chico antics at West Ham, the sacking, the appointment, Napoli, Liverpool, Napoli again, oh yeah and the Cardiff win (which actually doesn’t really get a mention this issue, says it all I suppose). It’s been generally good. If we had beaten Palace then I think we could say that it had been a very good start under the new leadership but performances have been better and we are clearly more of a team. We have loads in the magazine about Monk and so I won’t get into it much here and you will soon read how much I rate him and how I think he is the right man. But did you notice how when Nathan Dyer got injured at the end of the first half against Palace and had to go off the field on the other side of the pitch, Monk sent Routeldge to the opposite flank so when Dyer came on the field he was instantly on the correct wing? It was a leaders call, an instant recognition of the situation and an instant decision. Something which we haven’t had over the last two seasons. Little things but important steps. It was noticeable that game that we didn’t really have much leadership ON the pitch in the second half, when the game was slipping away, we didn’t really have many players showing too much influence there. We have a couple of weeks off now and I expect us to come back even more organised and maybe get that on-field leadership going to. As easy as it has been to write for this issue, I kind of hope that the next one is a bit more difficult though, if that makes sense.

Cheers Jack Swan

U AK B’

We printed an article a few issues back about ‘what makes a fans hero’. There were a number of different attributes which a player or person needs to be deemed a legend at a club and our next Jack B had them all. Playing 482 times for the Swans, scoring 115 goals and being an integral part of our first rise through the leagues. Our next Jack B is the great Robbie James I met up with Robbie’s cousin and former Swans team mate Anthony James to talk about Robbie and his wonderful playing career. What is your earliest memory of Robbie whether football wise or family? I can go football and family wise because my father actually managed a side that Robbie played in as a youngster at about 13 or 14 and he basically stood out then because even at that time there was a number of

clubs after him. There was Chelsea, he was back and fore to Cardiff a lot and obviously Swansea were looking at him. But that’s my earliest memory, he played for Brynmill I think and I used to be running around with the sponge and helping out like that. So I remember him as early as that. Did he stand out as a youngster? There was a number of clubs looking at him as I just said. It was different in those days as you would actually know then whether a scout was watching you. There was nothing cloak and dagger about it. I can remember one of them, I think his name was John Hudges and he was a Cardiff scout but you would know that they were there. There was a circle of about four or five of them, they were always around and watching the games on a regular basis and so he did stand out, he was strong then but an out and out goalscorer. At the time he was a striker but a real out and out goalscorer. Did he play much rugby as a kid? His pace and strength would have been an asset there. I’m not aware of it, purely football. He went to a Roman Catholic school, I think it was Bishop Vaughn and it was purely football. It was always football, I’ve never know Robbie to play rugby. Now in my case, I went to Bishop Gore school and I had to do it where as in Bishop Vaughn it was all football and so I think Robbie was just football. I don’t think that he ever really played rugby. I agree

people would regularly be called into the office, whether they were in the team or out of the team or whatever. But he was one of these where someone else would tell you not him. It would come from the boss. Robbie was very modest. He might come out with a beaming smile on his face but it would be the boss who would say ‘he’s got in the Welsh squad’. Robbie wouldn’t say anything; he was very modest in that way. Swansea completed the rise to the top league in ’81. How big a part do you feel Robbie played in the remarkable rise?

You played your part in the following season’s promotion, what was Robbie like with you? Was he protective at all?

Massive, You talking about Preston with that picture which has lasted for ever which I think is Jeremy, Alan and Robbie and that picture is still printed now. He was such an integral part, he was key. To me Curt and Robbie were key because of their ability to change games and its not about being disciplined or organised because they had all that but they could change games, Robbie could change a game – Alan could change a game. I think you get a lot of players (and I don’t mean to sound disrespectful here) who are journeymen but sometimes you get someone who could do something on a sixpence – well he was one of those.

Very much so, to the point that I roomed with him every time we went away. We were playing on Boxing day and taken away to the ‘Countryman’ on Christmas night of all places and me, him and Curt roomed and we had a glass of larger between us and a sandwich, that was our evening meal before we played on the Saturday. It was We’d be drawing or we would be one down and bang, he very much that if they could then I was put with Robbie, I would pull something out of the bag and we would be think that he did it naturally but I also think that the club made a thing of it to but yeah he would look after me; very back in it and he had that ability. MEADOW FISH BAR Do you know if any part of him regretted playing for Cardiff?

TAKE AWAY & RESTAURANT I don’t think so. Only because, he was there as a youngster as well. He chose Swansea so even though that rivalry existed, he was at Cardiff for a long time as a youngster. Im too young (just!) to remember him breaking through the ranks but from what I remember of him playing (and particularly the same as well towards the end of his career with us) he was a powerhouse midfielder who took no prisoners. When Robbie got the ball and elected to run with it then there was generally no stopping him and he got to where he wanted to be. Truly was one of the best midfielders I have ever seen play the game and I would absolutely dread to think what he would have been worth in today’s transfer market.

You hear some horror stories now about the animosity between the clubs but I never heard Robbie say a bad word towards Cardiff and vice-versa. I don’t know whether he won them over or whether it was a better time (to cross the divide).

Do you think he would have got into football management? I think yes. He was doing his stint in Llanelli, he was at Western Super Mare, he was at Merthyr, he then went to Llanelli and it was all building his CV up a little bit and so I think his next natural step, which was pretty close as we understand, was to be back involved in the club, very much as Alan is. Not as a meet and greet basis but as a coaching basis. I think he would have been a very good manager, I think he wanted to be. He was still playing and so he never had that feeling of not being able to influence a game in that way and so I don’t know how he would have coped with that because it is a different dynamic, when you can do something on the pitch to change a game then it’s a big dynamic but when you have to step back and do it from the touchlines it’s a different challenge. Laudrup has just had to do it. At the end of the day, he could do everything on the pitch but couldn’t make people do it. I think Robbie would have done well, its something that he wanted to do. I never got the impression that he would have moved away from football

in any capacity, he would always have wanted to be involved and he would have been able to pass on his influence. He was a good leader without ever being in your face.

What is your favourite memory of Robbie? I think the two Spurs games in the ‘70s. When we drew in our place and beat them up there. Again, I was involved but I never actually played. I played against Oxford on the Saturday and Robbie and I actually got the headlines, the ‘James Cousins’ something. And then we played against Spurs at home and I idolised Tottenham as a youngster, they were my second club and to watch him at that level and see him up at White Hart Lane was just superb. It was an amazing period. Even though for most people, the promotion to the top flight was the biggest memory, for me Spurs games were unbelievable. Fantastic memories. At that point, we were little Swansea and we were playing massive Tottenham who had Villa and Ardiles; big stars. And we went on the pitch and outplayed them and the magic of that win stands out and he was integral in that. I could pick some of his great goals but for me that was my massive memory of him and the club. A really big thanks to Anthony James for meeting up with me for this interview. I discovered a lot about Robbie James from speaking with Anthony and through a bit of research (yes I do some work now and then) and the more I looked into Robbie James the more I realised what an amazing man he was and how lucky we are to of had him as a major part of this club. Without doubt a very worthy member of our top ten Jack B’s.

Tributes from Planet Swans Remember him playing against Stoke at the Vetch (2nd season old first division I think) we won 3 nil I believe and Robbie was on 99 goals. He just could not score and this was typified by a shot (on a boggy Vetch Field) that beat the keeper and then stuck fast on the goal line!! Also remember him coming into a pub I worked in (when he was playing for Cardiff ) and my mate "refused to serve the scummer"!! and Robbie just laughed because he knew my mate. : Catullus Robbie took an amazing penalty............no messing about he just WACKED it! when he was stuck on 99 goals I remember he had a penalty at the east end......first time I ever saw him miss one! miles over the bar....His surge of pace with rugged strength was amazing to watch as he never looked like he was running fast it looked like a quick shuffle but he sure did the biz for us...a true legend borinifanclub

When we won the Welsh Cup against Kidderminster at The Vetch in '89 the trophy was presented on the pitch was thousands of fans also on the pitch (as I recall). One fan decided it would be a good idea to grab the trophy and parade it to the North Bank. Robbie strides over, gives him a look of "oi, I think that's mine sunshine" and grabbed the trophy back off him. You didn't mess with our Robbie! - NeathJack I played with him in brynmill colts youth team. played just the same in junior leagues as he did as a pro remember that his dad used to give him grief from the touchline: mawdlamjack

Tb U A Rn It seemed to the rest of the footballing world that Tony Pulis was jumping into a sinking ship when he got aboard the Crystal Palace boat, deep rooted at the foot of the league. Leaking goals at regular intervals, struggling to find the net at the other end, it appeared to us all that relegation was just a case of inevitability.

The emergence of Canas alongside Leon has also been interesting. On paper, we would be forgiven for thinking that Canas is playing as a second defensive midfielder but he is almost more of a box to box player in this role, regularly making serious strides to getting into the opponents box.

They may still go down but should they avoid the drop then the former Stoke manager has to win manager of the year. He inherited a set of players who he couldn’t add to for a couple of months and got those same players to keep clean sheets and be hard to beat.

Napoli had two second choice centre backs playing at the Liberty. Wilfried Bony ran to close them down at any possibility; I didn’t know he could run. This was clearly a tactic and one which I don’t think we would have done a few weeks earlier under Laudrup. It was really pleasing to see a small detailed tactic and that Bony clearly listened and followed it.

Comparing that situation to the one Garry Monk finds himself in is certainly harsh on his former boss but lessons can be learned from Selhurt Park as to what a bit of hard work and organisation can achieve. As I write this, we have played 3 games with a full strength eleven (excluding Everton in cup) and conceded one goal which was a rather unfortunate one against Stoke. The back four is the same back four under Laudrup but it already looks more solid. Slight tactical changes going forward have already been noticed, our wide men are wide and Pablo looks a revelation through the middle. The side already looks more organised and slight tinkering and specific tactics seem to be implemented at times.

Tony Pulis is an extremely experienced Premier League manager and expecting the youngest manager in the league to revitalise our season in the same way is possibly a bit much but I’m certainly very impressed with the start he has made. Garry composes himself in a very relaxed manor off the field and yet clearly demonstrates the passion and determination needed on it (or just to the side of it). Huw Jenkins knows him, he would know what the other players think of him and so by appointing him then we all know that Garry is regarded highly in the dressing room and I think that the early performances are showing just that.

Garry Monks Hair

This will be a regular feature and is an open invitation to Garry to send in monthly pictures of his hair. Bets are at the ready to whether he goes grey or bald first but under his new job, one is clearly only a matter of time. He looks young, with twins on the way and the stress of being a Premier League manager then surely it is only a matter of time before he looks a wreck. Send in your monthly pic Garry :)

Story of the Month I was flying from San Francisco to Los Angeles. By the time we took off, there had been a 45-minute delay and everybody on board was ticked. Unexpectedly, we stopped in Sacramento on the way. The flight attendant explained that there would be another 45-minute delay, and if we wanted to get off the aircraft, we would reboard in thirty minutes. Everybody got off the plane except one gentleman who was blind. I noticed him as I walked by and could tell he had flown before because his seeing eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of him throughout the entire flight. I could also tell he had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached him and, calling him by name, said, “Keith, we’re in Sacramento for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?” Keith replied, “No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs. Would you take him for me please?” Now picture this. All the people in the gate area came to a completely quiet standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a seeing eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sunglasses that day. People scattered not only trying to change planes but also trying to change airlines!

M r Sn A Cardiff fan was in luck and was able to buy two crates of Brain’s beer at the local supermarket. He placed the boxes on the front seat of his car and headed back home. He stopped at a petrol station where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde in a short skirt was filling up her car at the next pump. She glanced at the two boxes of beer, bent over and leaned in the passenger window revealing her ample cleavage, and said in a sexy voice, "I'm a big believer in bartering, old fella. Would you be interested in trading sex for beer?" ... He thought for a few seconds and then asked, "What kind of beer 'ya got?" What's red and bad for your teeth? A brick. People often accuse me of "stealing others jokes" and being "a plagiarist". Their words not mine... Did you hear about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality... Day 19, I have successfully conditioned my master to smile and write in his book every time I drool.- Pavlov's Dog I know a good Royal Mail joke but you might not get it. Entropy isn't what it used to be. What comes between fear and sex? Fünf. What do you get when you cross a joke with a rhetorical question. A pun, a play on words, and a limerick walk into a bar. No joke. Edit: Apparently an anecdote was also in attendance. They say a Freudian slip is when you say one thing, but you really mean your mother. What do you call two crows on a branch? An attempted murder. What's orange and sounds like a parrot? A carrot. Did you hear about the Mexican train killer? He had locomotives.

So it’s been quite a month, on the strength of my last article calling for his head the board decided to get rid of Laudrup. Obviously, I’m flattered that Huw takes my opinions to heart but I couldn’t help having a crisis of conscience... had we done the right thing? I mean, we just don’t sack managers, have we become one of those reactionary teams? I was worried. Then we played Cardiff, and Stoke, and Everton and Napoli and Liverpool and Napoli again and I knew we’d done the right thing. Here’s a shocker though, we only won one of them (it was a good one though eh?). What’s made me happy though is the performances, those lacklustre “when do we go home” showings we were making under Laudrup were gone, this team is up for it now.

We could have beaten Liverpool, we should have beaten Napoli. That’s mental. What Gary and Alan between them have brought to the club is far more than “knowing where the kettle is” these are men that have been here through thick and thin. They’ve seen the club at it’s worst and they were a big part of turning it around, they don’t just believe in the philosophy they breathe it. They’ve seen it work, seen where it’s taken us and they’ve grown with the club. What better people could we have to take us forward. I’ll confess that after the West Ham game I genuinely thought we’d go down, that we’d be one of those clubs that think there are worse teams below us and get caught out. I didn’t trust us to win the must win games, to commit to the run in of the season and I thought for the complacency of the manager and the players we’d be punished. No more.

We’re not one of those clubs, we made a change when it needed to be made, and we didn’t rush in to anything, we won’t be doing a Fulham or a Cardiff. Monk and Curtis may not turn out to be the long-term solution to the problem (in Huw we trust) but for now, for the way you can see they motivate the players we should all be grateful. Because I’ve not written as many words as I normally do I’ll try and write a joke for you... Two Jacks in a pub, one says to the other “did you go see the circus a few weeks back” “yeah, we beat ‘em 3-0” Geraint Evans is a comedian and writer you can book, hire or generally just be friends with for a pint. Don’t judge him on that joke though.

Rih M – Rih T . Saturday 1st of February 2014, Swansea City faced West Ham in one of many matches to be played between two sides fighting for survival. Nobody would have thought that the game would see the end of Laudrups reign. I can’t recall a manager ever going from a position of relative job security to being dismissed after one match, certainly not after a 2-0 away loss. Having said that, it was inevitable and the right call. The performance that day was atrocious, absolutely shockingly bad but worse than that was the way we set ourselves up which obviously lead to that embarrassing performance. Andy Carroll is a nightmare. He has always enjoyed playing us and always been a threat against us and he was inevitably going to be the danger man. A school boy playing Football Manager would know that the best way to deter that threat is to have a high line so that any flick-ons are into less threatening areas and to get close to him and win the second balls. We did none of these.

Players need to take some responsibility I agree but the buck stops with the gaffa. Either we played the tactics he implemented, which was to have a deep backline and not man mark their talisman or the players ignored his tactics, which in many ways is even more worrying. Our Former Great Dane (I will let you decide whether the ‘former’ is for ‘our’ or ‘great’) spoke of a wasted weeks preparation after the game, implying that the issue was that the players ignored his tactics. This was massive alarm bells ringing through my ears. Firstly this suggested that he had totally lost the dressing room and secondly, if he implemented a high line (which surely he must have) then why did he sit in his chair for ninety minutes while our back four stayed deep? I hear the arguments of, ‘his management style was fine when all was good’. Our performance against West Brom last season was the best I have ever seen from us and one of the best first half performances I have seen from any team in the Premier League. So why have we gone backwards? What went wrong? The Europa League and injuries have clearly played their part and it is ironic that it is more than possible that he will still be in a job should we have not won the League Cup last year but our downward spiral started back then, before this seasons injury crisis and the Europa matches. We finished eleventh in our first season in the Premier League under a very well organised Brendan Rogers. Did we have the eleventh best set of players that season? Nowhere near but we made up for our lack of individual talent by being hard to score against and hardworking. As a team, we deservedly finished mid-table and were pretty consistent throughout the whole season. Brendan left and the Laud came in and with him came some real quality players to add to our organised side. The likes of Michu, Chico and Pablo settled in quickly into

Rih M – Rih T . Cne our set-up, De Guzman and Ki looked good signings and Ben Davies slotted in where Neil Taylor stood. Our season started with a massive bang and we found ourselves in the top half of the table all season and were almost disappointed to finish ninth after a poor end of the season. Did we have the ninth best set of players then? Possibly. Our personel has improved once again this season. Most noticeably, adding the goal threat of Wilfried Bony but Shelvey, Amat, Pozuello and Canas have certainly improved the depth of the squad with no big name departures. On paper, our squad is easily better than our first two seasons, individually our players have improved but collectively, there is no doubt in my eyes that we have got worse. We played some wonderful football in our first season in the Premier League as we did in the first half of last season but what seems to be overlooked time and time again is that we were solid at the back and had great foundations. Every side is a better team when 1-0 up but our record is extreme. When we score first, we get something from the game, when the opposition do – we don’t. People have banged on about our lack of goals this season and although it would have been nice to have scored a few more, I am certain that we would have scored more if we had conceded less. We look a threat pretty much every game when it is 0-0, when sides have to look to score against us instead of sitting on a lead which has been handed to them.

We have gone one down in far too many games this season through basic organisational mistakes, the sort which we grew accustomed to under Martinez. While managed by the Spaniard, we would regularly ‘batter’ teams but come away with a 2-2 draw having conceded from two set pieces. I since found out that we never practiced defending set-pieces under the now Everton manager. If you have read a few Jack Swans then you will know that I still hold a grudge against ‘Judas’ but I can’t hide from the fact that he improved us, brought in better players and has played a massive part in our current success. I do think (looking back) that he left at the right time, that we needed someone to come in and sure up our defence and give us some organisation and I think that the same is said of now and Laudrup. The squad we hold now is better than when Laudrup came in. He has been brilliant at picking players and his legacy will be this squad as well as our first major trophy. He was the right man at the right time but he has gone at the right time and we now need another right man at the right time and that ‘right man’ will be someone who is well organised not someone who can find the next Michu. I’m certain that Garry Monk is that man. When Roberto left, we brought in Souza and although there are a hundred reasons to dislike those days, we improved on our league position and Brendan acquired an organised team.

Rih M – Rih T . Cne Garry Monk has made a career out of being organised. He is/was the kind of defender who I like to see in my team. Never blessed with any pace, not blessed with ridiculous height or strength, he needed to have the know-how of where to be and when. We don’t need new players, we can’t get them anyway. What we need is to get ourselves organised and to put a bit of garry Monks know-how into our back four. The Summer is a long way away. The most important thing is that we are still in the Premier League next season and I am far more confident of that under Garry Monk than under Laudrup. People are already saying that we need a manager who can ‘attract’ players. That the Spaniards aren’t going to come over to play under our former Southampton player as much as for a former Barcelona player. I don’t agree with this in the slightest to be honest. If a player is willing to uproot their family and move to a foreign country then I think there are far greater factors than who their boss used to play football for. Money always talks, style of play comes into it, facilities, league position and expectations, these will all be more important to a player than their boss (unless they have previous experience working with them). I have a very bitter taste in my mouth to this day because of Martinez, a slight ill feeling towards Brendan (I want my Joey back) and Pablo Souza has

become a laughing stock. But I have nothing but good feelings towards Laudrup. I wish him all the very best, I personally think he would make an outstanding Head of Recruitment or Director of Football at any club in the world. Being a football manager in the Premier League requires a person to devote everything. To live and breath football twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. I don’t think that this is Laudrup and I hold no grudges against him for it not being so. History shows us that great players rarely make great managers. Laudrup was certainly a great player and I believe that he felt that if you put good players on a football pitch that they will be a good team – they won’t. Mr Laudrup, I thank you for the good players but Garry Monk is the right man to turn them into a good team.

As Garry Monk’s a young, inexperienced manager, I think he could use a few tips. 1.Lose the trainers, get a suit and some nice brown shoes. 2. Buy Tiendalli a one way ticket to Kiev. Or the moon. 3.Give De Guzman a week of sprint training with Dyer, followed by a week of trying to tackle Bony. If that doesn’t work, set the dogs on him and see if that’ll make him go faster than a light jog. 4. Send Bony to train with the Ospreys to give him a real physical challenge. 5. Tell Vazquez to shoot once he’s rounded the keeper. 6. Hypnotise Shelvey so he thinks he’s playing Liverpool every week. 7. Don’t sell Ben Davies for any amount of money. 8.Win the Europa league; if Fulham can get to the final then so can we. 9.Sign Leroy Lita up for Linked In. Cardiff City are looking for a painter and decorator to redo all their Premier League signs. 10. Bring back Caulker, Joe Allen and Sigurdsson. One’s getting relegated and the other two are wasting their careers on the bench. 11. Get some quality cover for Angel Rangel. 12. Hire Malky Mackay as defence coach, and Alan Tate as team bus driver. 13. If in doubt, give Rodgers or Martinez a shout. 14. Always, always trust in Huw Jenkins.

IC Y In the publishing business it is generally a rule that when you make a false allegation, you must give the apology and correction the same sized piece and page positioning as the initial feature. This is that apology. I didn’t hold back on my criticism of Chico Flores in the last issue and although being wrong would mean better for the team, I struggled not being slightly smug during his disastrous performances that followed and the Andy Carroll red card. An embarrassment, a liability and then the appointment of a manager who he’d had a recent spat with: surely it was Chico time up. Apparently not. I was surprised to see Chico named in Garry Monks first eleven. I was certain that Monk was a bigger man than to leave him out because of their training ground bust up but I was pretty confident that he would see Amat as a better and more consistent Centre Half.

watch him do it as even when he was on top form last season, he still never did that. From the West Ham match to the Cardiff game, he has transformed his game completely. I said he hasn’t got a brain, he suddenly looks a genius. I said he couldn’t prioritise defensively, he can now sit back and time his challenge. A huge amount of credit should go to Garry Monk, it can’t be a total coincidence that this changed happened during the manager turnover but ultimately it is the player who has put these performances in and who derives the bulk of the praise. We all ask referees to come out and apologise for a mistake, Jonjo gave us an emotional interview after the Liverpool match, well this is my apology. Chico Flores, I was completely wrong in the last issue, you are wonderful.

Enter the ‘Warrior’. Suddenly, Chico is world class again. He has always been quality on the ball, I compared him to David Luiz in my complete slating of him last month but until the new manager has come in, he just looked lost. I can’t remember a defender turning his performances around and finding form so quickly. Strikers score a lucky goal after a baron spell and suddenly they can find the net week in week out again but it generally takes defenders months to settle back into top form after a poor spell. Over the last few weeks, Chico contributes, whether passing the ball into the midfield or winning a challenge as he always has but he then does something magical and slots back into the correct position. If we get relegated i estimate we Terry Miller Difficult for would lose around 9 million in revethe board this one, but nue next season, axing him was the ML's team selection and cheaper option at 5 million. Andrew Howells Yes , Gareth Hawkins He's been you've only got to look up primed for the job for the the m4 to see what bringpast 6 seasons. He's got the ing a new man with differbasics spot on so far. So its ent ideas in at this time of the season a yes from me. can do! Alex Collins Time will tell, promising league performances so far. Lets see where we go between now and May. Geraint Evans Hopefully. Clearly a top bloke and a club legend, but it's far too early to tell if he can turn that into consistently good performances. As long as we beat those around us he'll be fine by me. Diana Doyle yes look what he done against Cardiff he knows the players and they respect him well done garry keep up the good work

assistant!

Vince Hotten Probably - but will possibly need a lot of guidance in recruiting new players, perhaps we could employ laudrup as his Spenser Davies Yes after watching them tonight. Excellent all-around

Swansea's midfield examined: A statistical comparison Do the numbers match fans' perceptions? by theswanseaway.co.uk

Last season, our central midfield consisted primarily of Jonathan De Guzman, Leon Britton & Ki Sung-Yueng, who were essentially vying for two spots given Michu's preference for playing behind the frontman (who for a good swathe of the season was Danny Graham). This season we've seen Ki loaned out, leaving De Guzman & Leon with new signings Jose Canas & Jonjo Shelvey for company in the centre of the park. Michu played a couple of games up top early this season and has since missed out a lot through injury, so I'm going to concentrate on the four we'd consider "central midfielders". Let's start with passing. We do like a pass in SA1 don't we? Leon & Jono's pass completion is pretty much the same as last year, Leon's down a percent or so to 90.7% and De Guzman's marginally better than last season's at 89.6%. The two newcomers to the team this year figure pretty much as you'd expect - Canas's is almost identical to Leon's at 90.6% with Shelvey a little lower at 84.1%. Given he enjoys more of an attacking role that's to be expected, and he also has the least average passes per game with 52.2, with De Guzman averaging 60.3, Canas 61.4 and Leon 64.8. He was always going to have the most wasn't he? Interestingly when compared with last year's Leon and De Guzman are actually playing about ten more passes per game - a sign of how much we've been retaining possession this year even if on occasion we've struggled to do anything with it. That takes us neatly to chance creation. While you'd expect Canas and Leon to boss the passing charts, you'd probably fancy Shelvey & De Guzman to come out on top when it comes to passes in the final third, and it works out fairly predictably. Leon plays 0.3 key passes per game, Canas 0.1 (ouch). but Shelvey manages 1.3 De Guzman 1.8. Goals and assists are also an area you'd expect there

to be a disparity, and you'd be right - Canas and Leon have no goals and assists between them. Shelvey, however, now has five goals and three assists while his Dutch teammate has one goal and four assists. You don't score without shooting, and that's neatly reflected in the stats too - Jonjo has 2.3 shots per game, Jono 1.6, while Leon & Canas come in at 0.3 and 0.1. In terms of ball retention, again what most fans would have suspected is reflected in the raw data. Leon & Jose Canas are both dispossessed 0.7 times per game, but De Guzman is over double that at 1.5. Jonjo comes in with a nice round figure of once per game, and that's impressive given how often he tries to beat his man. As for losing the ball through poor control it's fairly even between Jose (0.8 - and better than Leon!), Leon (0.9) and Jonjo (1.0) but again De Guzman comes across a little loose, gifting possession on average 1.5 times per game. Still an impressively low figure, mind. Defensively, Jose & Leon boss the tackle stats and given for the majority of the season only one of them has been

selected, that means the other central midfielder hasn't really been gaining possession back that much. Leon averages 1.9 tackles, Canas 1.8 while De Guzman comes in at 1.3, Shelvey 1.1. I guess they are up the field a lot more, but we're already seeing the benefits of playing with two defensive midfielders so I expect the midfield stats to tighten up a lot in the near future. Interceptions too is another area with a disparity - Leon averages 1.9, Canas 2.1, but Jonjo and De Guzman only make 0.8 & 0.9 respectively. If I'm being honest there isn't as much to read into these statistics as I thought there would be. I've been critical of Jonathan De Guzman in the past for sloppy play but the statistics simply don't relay that - more often that not he retains possession when passing, even if he is mugged more occasionally than any of our other midfielders. I do feel though, that if he is willing to run until it hurts, he could be some player. I struggle to recall too many times where I've seen him busting a gut to get forward in particular, whereas all the other players we've looked at here can never be accused of not putting in a shift. What is interesting to me is we're obviously playing more passes on average. Given the increase in calibre of the squad if Monk can get the team playing the same football we were at the end of Rodgers' tenure/the beginning of Laudrup's then it's automatically going to be football of a higher standard given the players on the field are capable of that much more. It's good to see Monk appreciates how important it is to control the centre of the midfield, and if the next

year goes as his first few games in charge have I'd expect the passing stats to be even more impressive if we were to look at them again next February. Whether De Guzman is still here then remains to be seen as his second loan deal expires in the summer, but despite how often I get frustrated with him there's clearly a quality footballer in there somewhere and I'd love for him to kick on at the Swans. Canas is someone else I'd like to give a mention as he's bedded into the side so well. Since signing from Betis he's looked every bit a Swansea City midfielder, but it's infuriating we've had to wait this long to see him paired with Leon Britton regularly when the possibility of such a great partnership was just so obvious. The Spaniard has taken to life in SA1 like a duck to water and I'm expecting a great second season from him, as he continues to settle in and his English improves. Overall, this just shows that if you put statistics in context you can in fact infer a fair amount from them. There are useless statistics, sure, and there are statistics taken completely out of context, but if you compare these statistics with your average Swansea fan's opinion of the four midfielders we've looked at it's likely they'd come to the same conclusions. For me, the foreseeable future should include Leon & Canas at defensive midfield with one of De Guzman, Shelvey, Michu, Pablo or Pozuelo ahead of them. Get Ki back in the summer and we're covered at defensive midfield, and then it's simply a case of figuring out who's better ahead of them. It should be fun finding out! Things are on the up, but this is who I think is in the running at present to become Jack Swans player of the year.

1st

Nathan Dyer: I wanted to offload him at the end of what I thought was a really poor season last term, no end product, sloppy and I even think I used the words, ‘form is temporary and class is permanent but I’m not convinced he ever had any class’. Just shows once again that I’m a total idiot. He’s been our most dangerous and constant performer this year and fickle old me is now demanding he gets his recognition with an England call up. He battered Napoli in the first tie, they had no answer to him whatsoever. He’s lighting fast, and when confident, he knows how to out the ball in the back of the net and just causes havoc to the opposition. Defensively he is brilliant, wins back more balls than probably anyone else. I stand by my opinion that he was really poor last season but he definitely does have class.

Bony: I can’t really recall a player looking quite as strong as our £12 million pound man. He looks at challenging defenders as though ‘don’t be stupid, don’t waste your time or mine, this is my ball and I’m going to do with it what I like’. There is a bizarre mixture of modest arrogance about the man which is just great to see. His goalscoring record is outstanding, even if he could have scored a good few more. Nobody wants to play against him, you can be certain of that and he will probably only get better. Very nearly at his 20 goal target, he may well get a good few more than that. Dare we expect 30 next season? He wont be playing for us the season after if he does. Quality player.

3rd

2nd

Jonjo Shelvey Will he get in our starting line up when everyone is fit? Scary thought that. He’s been bizarrely our most consistent performer. He throws hot and cold during games, hero to villain in a matter of moments but he has done that all season. You always feel like we are more likely to score when he is on the pitch. Still young and with more to learn, he is a very good player but he has the potential to be a great player. Talking to Anthony James about Robbie James earlier in the magazine about how Robbie could change a game with a moment of magic, Jonjo has that in his locker, has a very long way to go before we can start comparing him with our greats but could get there

Special Mention: Chico Flores: I’m going to slate all our players from now on because they suddenly turn into world class players as if just to make me look stupid. What a difference a new manager has made to our completely tactically useless and our liability of a centre half. He has looked really top quality in ever game he has played under Monk and looks a totally different player to the buffoon who played against West Ham. Keep it up, I’m happy to be proved wrong this way round every time. Pablo: Again, he just looks a different player under the new coach. I think its more than that he is now playing through the middle, he’s wanting to win the ball back, he’s almost getting involved all over the park. He was (and we have all used this word to describe him) a ‘luxury’ player under Laudrup and although he does still give the ball away more than most, he contributes by more than just those wonder passes which he has always been able to thread. Keep it up boyo!!!
