Words From Jack Swan Well, it is beginning to look a bit worrying isn’t it? On the plus side, the boring mid-table inevitability seems off the cards. Let’s look forward to an exciting relegation battle! I must admit, I’m still not feeling too concerned. I don’t mean to sound too blasé about it but I think we’ll be alright. Our next four games will probably define the rest of our season, starting with Fulham at home. Should we fail to get six points from those four then I’ll be really worried, nine or more and the dull mid-table climax is back on.

It has been a weird season, I can’t really recall a game where we have been awful from start to finish but we haven’t had a game where we have been great for ninety minutes either. The Swans have basically become Jonjo Shelvey.

28: Jokes By Spense

It is a new year, it doesn’t really mean much, it is generally just a form of measuring time but with it brings new optimism and of course the transfer window. It has been really quiet all over thus far. I don’t know why they don’t make the transfer window just one day because nothing happens until the deadline anyway.

36: Interview with Mal Pope

Nothing would surprise me this window. We could bring in a keeper, a centre back, a right back, a left back (if Taylor goes), a centre midfielder, a winger or a striker or in fact nobody at all. The biggest surprise has to be Ki. Why haven’t we brought him back? If not then why haven’t we sold him and spent that money on someone who the manager actually wants? Time will tell, in the Laud we trust! Do we? I think I still do…. Packed issue this one. Enjoy.

Cheers Jack Swan

U AK B’

I don’t think there will be too many complaints about our next Jack B’. Our current board have seen us move from near extinction to our most prosperous and most successful time in our history. The next on our list of top ten Jack B’s is our current Board of Directors. I met up with Leigh Dineen to talk about the last decade and more.

playing on a Tuesday night then we would go and watch them and then on half terms we would obviously watch Swansea. I caught the football bug but I probably watched Swansea 3 or 4 times a year.

When did you watch your first Swans game?

One of my all time favourites would be Bob Latchford, he was a great striker, so Powerful. In those days then, Rajkovic was a great centre half. Stanley, I quite liked. Probably because of his goal against Man City which was out of this world and so that era then. And then obviously you had Alan Curtis and Robbie James.

I don’t know the exact game but probably when I was about 8 or 9 years old, my grandfather used to take me down. My parents lived in India but I went to school in Bristol and used to holiday down here and so half-term and stuff like that. I do remember that it was definitely a case of my grandfather would have a pint and I’d be outside having a packet of crisps and a coke. We used to go up the top of the double Decker in the West stand. Did you catch the bug straight away? Yes, well I was a big football fan. I was born in Swansea and I was here until I was 4 or 5 and then we moved to India but I always supported Swansea but in those days you would always have a first division side as well and I supported Q.P.R. I don’t anymore, not the way that they run their club but I used to like them as my second team.

Who is the best player that you have seen at the Swans?

That era was probably when I was about 15 or 16, when we were in the first division so it is always going to be those players for me. Although now, I look at some of the players we have got and they have probably surpassed those players. I would think Alan or Robbie though. When did you first join the board and how did it come about? 2002, when Petty was in charge of the club, I was a part of the supporters trust at the time. I Became Chairman (of the supporters trust). Then when we bought the club out, the fans and the supporters trust had a percentage in it. I joined the board the same time as everyone else, so February 2002 I think we took over. So I was there representing the

I think QPR finished second to Liverpool by one point in the seventies and they had Curry and Given and Clement (playing for them). I used to fly to London and if Q.P.R were

supporters trust but then my family also had their own share in it (the club). So after about a year or two years they felt that there was a conflict of interest and so I stepped down from the supports trust and so then joined the board in my own right in 2004 I think. We interviewed Mel Nurse earlier in the season and I saw you a week or so earlier on the BBC Documentary ‘the fall and rise of’ and up until then, I hated Petty. But you and Mel seemed to suggest that he wasn’t a horrible man but simply a businessman who didn’t understand football. He was an opportunist. There was no doubt about that. He saw the opportunity, I didn’t know him personally and so I can’t say if he is a nice guy or not. He was a businessman who perhaps saw an opportunity to make a bit of money. He did genuinely bring people over from Australia to finance the club and then they pulled out and so he was left holding the baby. He didn’t have the finances himself and so he did what any businessman would have done which is cut costs. But the fact was that he couldn’t do that with players as that wrangled the supporters, which it would do in football. He was never going to have a chance from then. Mind you the football club was weeks away from going bust then and so whoever came in had a poison chalice.

So I can’t say if he was a nice man or not, I should think that he is no different from a lot of people but got thrown into the line light and made a few wrong decisions. Just for those of us who know nothing. How is our board currently set up? Is it a voting style committee where six meetings take place to discuss which bog roll to purchase? HAHA No, I think we are alright for bog roll. We don’t get involved in that. We have board meetings every month. The chairman effectively looks after the football side of things from the first team, youth, liaising with that manager, talking to the coaches etc... I look after the other side of things, the commercial and marketing side and probably quite a lot of the staffing issues that go on here. Then the only other Board members that work here are Don Keefe who does the finance and Steve Penny who is JCP Solicitors, who does all the soliciting stuff and lawyers. And also Gwilym Joseph deals with the building of Landore and Fairwood but he’s not based down here. When it comes to voting, I don’t think that we have ever pushed that it is done on a share basis. It is done on one man – one vote. We (only) bring major issues to that. The day to day running is done by whoever is around or whoever is

No, we don’t actually. We have discussions and we all have different points of view. (We are) all very strong characters because most of us have run our own businesses and so we are used to having our own way. Over 12 years, we have definitely learned how to deal with each other and how to work as a board. At the end of the day, if 5 vote for it and 4 vote against it then that is it. And at the end of the day we usually have a pint and we get on with it.

You’re a business man; I have seen Sir Alan Sugar say in the past that football doesn’t make sense as a business. Did you see your initial capital in the Swans as an investment?

HAHA Yeah, and who is to say that in three or five yea time that we won’t be hated? Who is to say that if we make the right moves going forward, getting the stadium expansion and filling it? Get more money to invest in players. Fair Play might come into it but I would suggest that the big clubs would find ways to get money into the club through advertising and that. I would think that it is highly unlikely but (I wouldn’t say) never.

club, they have to be one hell of a football supporter to do it for the right reasons. Would we welcome it? If it meant that we competed and remained in the Premier League and it was the only way that we could? We would have to look at it. It could be even expanding the stadium or something. If we wanted to get the stadium to 30,000 then it could cost £25 to £30 million. I don’t know the exact figures but its not going to be much short of that and we might need someone to do that. I would believe that if anything was to ever happen then the supporters trust would still be there and we would make sure that anyone who came in would be aware of how the club is set-up but we are not there yet. Having progressed like we have over the last decade. In ten years time, can we win the Champions League? Blody hell. Anything is possible isn’t it? Is it less likely that we would win the champions league in the next ten years or be where we are now from ten years ago? It is harder to break that top four or five because of the money involved. Never say never because it could happen. But then we’d still have to actually win the champions league wouldn’t we? It would be hard enough getting there. Avenues are opening. Winning the EUROPA league next season gets you a spot into the Champions League.

Does the club take as much of your time now as it did ten years ago? I imagine that the club are able to employ people to do some of the jobs which were then carried out by the board but I’m guessing that there is more to do? I probably spend as much time now as I did then but differently. Ten years ago, one you would spend much of your time file finding, two you would be doing the jobs yourself which are jobs which you could probably hire to get someone to do. I remember when we moved here (Liberty Stadium Office) and we had a shop to fit out and we had a commercial manager and me and that was it. We didn’t really have a clue what to do but we ended up getting some catalogues, ended up getting them printed in some place up in Skewen, being up there until 9 – 10 o’clock at night checking that everything was right. Physically doing the commercial and everything. Now obviously we have a retail manager, we have a social media manager, we have a Marketing manager, we got a Media and now my time is spent managing rather than doing. Hours wise I would say that ten years ago I probably did do more hours because I had so much time spent on the phone out of working hours where as now I don’t need to do that. Now I go home and spend my time replying to twitter. We see a bit of a laughing stock of a chairman up the road and I won’t draw you into saying anything on them but can you understand a chairman or board member feeling that they have the right to control anything that they want to at a club? I can see from our experience (from) when we first came in

MEADOW FISH BAR Potentially in how ever many years, we could expand?

Yeah, we could go again. Like Man Utd have with Old Trafford, they have added and added and added over the years. Contrary to belief, we haven’t got the foundations to just keep on adding, they need to virtually be rebuilt and so the roof will come off and we build behind. I’m not a structural Engineer but I think we can keep on going if we want but 32,000 is what we are looking at.

Text MISSGB 49 TO 64343 to vote With the rent As far as I know then if we are going to get planning then Texts cost plus rate.People talk about that but when you look at it then we pay it will be in the next£1 month or standard six weeks butnetwork I don’t get too Get voting x involved in that side. a fair rent. Because you are paying out of your ticket sales and we pay a fair percentage but it goes into the stadium management company to run the stadium. Anybody who is out there saying that stadiums make money are lying. It is hard to break even but the stadium management company is posting a profit now.

Is it going to be tricky to time it so that we don’t lose seats for a bit?

Yeah I think it is but if we get our timing right then we might get a scenario where we will have to be giving people raincoats for three months or so but hopefully not lose seats because we are only building behind and so it should be OK.

Not sure you will answer this but what does our top earner earn? More in a week than what most of us earn in a year. They earn a decent amount for this level. Why haven’t the club paid off their previous creditors? The CVA? Yeah I think you will find that it is probably illegal to do so. If you have gone into a CVA where they have had to vote to take a cut or whatever then some would have lost more than others and so I think it is illegal to do it like that. What we have tried to do in the past with all those affected (is that) we have tried to employ them or give them contracts so that they can make their money at some point over time. I would say that most, in someway or another would have had their money back in someway or another but I don’t think that we can legally just give them money. We couldn’t go to one and go ‘here is the money you have lost’ and then not go to another. Under company law, I would be surprised if we could do that but that doesn’t stop us from trading with these people to hopefully get their money back through profit of trading. Is watching football in the U.K too expensive these days? Compared to Germany yes. But we are driven by the bigger clubs, we are not competing with them in as much as they have 70 or 80 thousand people coming through and we only have twenty thousand and so if we Mark Rees qtr LS.ai were going to turn

round and say that we are only going to charge fifteen or twenty pound a ticket and they continue to charge forty or fifty then the disparity is getting worse and we will go further down the chain. The Premier League looked at a way of doing subsidy for away travel, they sort of said that we would like you to spend x amount of your money on doing so, you don’t have to do it but we would like you to. It caused a complete muddle in as much as some wanted to do it this way and some wanted to do it that way, I think that they should have said that we are going to vote on this and all away fans will only have to pay £15 across the board. Or ten pound or whatever it is and we will all have to adear to that. If they had done that then it would have made it much more affordable for away fans to travel and we wouldn’t have this ridiculous scenario where we are trying to do something for our fans (and others aren’t). Like Stoke for example, we are giving away a free meal. So we have to pay Stoke for the free meal. We have managed to have receptacle deals with some clubs so that you only charge our fans £20 then we will only charge your fans £20, we have done that. But I think the Premier League missed a trick and should have done it so that there is a set price for away travel, ten quid or fifteen quid. I will be bringing it up in the next Premier League commercial meeting so we can hopefully get something like that in place for next season. Are you aware of your legacy? I think that we are aware that we are trying to leave a legacy and that legacy will be things like Landore and fairwood. So whatever happens, we are going to have two first class training facilities for years to come. Landore is there, £6 million on Extensions • Conservatories & All uPVC Work Brick & Stone Work • Brick-Paved Driveways & Bases • All Groundwork & Drainage • Plastering Dry Lining • All Carpentry • All Flat Roofing Tiled & Slated Roofs, Fibreglass/Box Profile Sheeting All Work Guaranteed • Fully Insured No Job Too Big or Too Small NEW! that. Fairwood I went to see over the weekend, we got a long way to go there but we do have 8 football pitches and 2 Astro-Turfs to be played on. So now, coming from Llandarcy and sharing showers with the public etc… we now have two first class facilities and that will be the legacy. We are aware of that because we have talked about it. We said that we had to invest some of the money from the Premier League into something which is tangible, something that will be here even if we were in Division 2. Do you feel that you and the board have the same drive and interest as you always have? Will we still be seeing you, Huw and co at the club in 5 or ten years? I don’t know. I personally don’t travel like I used to travel and it is almost as if you would travel to Rochdale and Hartlepool because we would be the only ten up there and so they need our support. Now we can go to Man United or wherever and we have seventeen or eighteen hundred up there and so they wont really notice if I don’t go. My drive for the business? Yes! My drive for travelling away? I didn’t go to either of the Man Utd games because I’m probably getting to that stage now where the football club took a lot out of my personal life and perhaps I need to give a little bit back and spend a bit more time with my kids and stuff and not travelling and coming back at twelve o’clock at night on a Saturday. So that side of it, definitely not got the drive I had but business wise, I think

it is still very exciting and want to see it going forward. What would I do? For twelve years it has become a part of our lives, it is our life really. It was chucked upon us but it would be difficult to give it up. If I had to give it up then I would, I’d get on with something else. I got my own business to run and would be quite happy to get back to that full time but in five years? Yes, I think we will be here. Unless something happens and we get bought out by a sugar Daddy or of course if something goes wrong and you buggers kick us out. I have had the pleasure of meeting most of the board of directors over the years and everyone I have met have been a football fan first. I don’t think we can really appreciate how lucky we are to have a board of local football fans running our club. And they are clearly not only that, their decisions, whether it is in managerial appointments, player transfer dealings or the investments into our future have proven right time and time again. I’d like to answer one of the questions that I asked Leigh: ‘no to a sugar Daddy’. We don’t want it, we don’t need it and I would rather be in the Championship, League one or even League two with our current board than win the Premiership with a Vincent Tan type at the helm and I’m sure the massive majority of fans agree. A huge thanks to Leigh for meeting up with me and a bigger thanks for the past decade. Disclaimer: These views are that of Leigh Dineen and not that of the club

I was quite confident that Mr Bony would make many a fan look foolish for writing him off too early. So much so that I asked a question on facebook asking what fans thought of him. I did this with the intention of asking those same people the very same question a year later. After his recent form, I kind of thought, why wait? So here is those very same people answering that very same question. I have put their comments from a month ago first and their recent thoughts next. Not everyone is as foolish as I hoped sadly. Ian Harding

Steve Tanner He will come good, he’s an international striker, for any doubters have a look at Bergkamp when he first came into Prem I've always seen him as quality, his interplay on his debut told me he was quality, the fitter he gets the better he ll be, he won't be everyone's cup of tea, but averaging a goal every other game will do nicely for me. Any chance of mentioning the book in the next mag ? Gareth E Morgan He hasn’t done anything as of yet, jury is still out I suppose, then again, he is overpriced at £12 million, lets hope he proves us wrong. He's playing better, getting into more spaces, I'd like him to chase the ball down a bit more, we could also get more balls into tge box for him, let's hope he goes on and scores a hatful more goals and hopefully a hatrick against cardiff next month.. Nathan Matthews

Price for what he did last season = Bargain. Price for what he has brought us so far = we have been robbed. I think he will come good though. Give the boy service and he'll do damage. Would love to see him play alongside another striker but somehow Prem has become this negative 1 up top league. Man City may have higher calibre players but its no coincidence that they score for fun, they play 2 up top. Its not as if Swans playing 2 "CDMs" is keeping us clean sheets, so there no justification for doing so. Adam John He can hold the ball up but why change Michu playing up front? Michu scored so many goals and it doesn’t make sense to change it. Confidence playing a massive factor. The fans are behind him every game which can only help a player. He needs playmaker behind him to get the best out of him. Could become one of our best! Ben Davies

Reminds me of Jason Scotland but at least Scotland scored 20 goals a season lol

Wrong player for us

Improving every game just hope he can keep it up

Been a beast the last couple of games! Hope he keeps it up !!

Lynsey Hughes Lazy player with no enthusiasm, doesn’t fit in our team at all. Over priced I still believe that he doesn't have the speed and passion. His goals are often more like than judgement, but while he's scoring goals I'll get off his case. But I'm just a girl what do I know ...

Wh i Vnn T? Much has been written about Vincent Tan but few know who he is and how he has got to where he is now. He was born on the stroke of midnight February 8th 1952. It is said that his mother was in labour for 4 days but refused to push until the lucky date of the 8th. Vincent Tans love for the number eight has been a major part of his rise. He entered and won his first raffle on his eighth birthday, winning a years supply of fortune cookies but it was on his eighteenth birthday that his life really changed. He bought a single Asian lottery ticket and won the largest prize in lottery history, nearly half a billion pound (in today’s money). Mr Tan refused to spend a penny until his 28th birthday where he bought the Malaysian McDonalds franchise along with various other companies. Vincent would only employ people who were born on the eighth of the month, with managers needing to be born on the eighth of August. His luck and his wealth continued to grow, as did his love for the number 8. In 1988, Vincent started sending out a Malaysian ringgit (currency) to every Malaysian on their 18th birthday, for them to purchase an Asian lottery ticket. By 2001, over 5,000 Malaysians had won the Asian Lottery Jackpot from this generosity. Tan has seven children by seven different mothers and has no contact with either child or mother. It is thought that it is the mother’s inability to give birth on the 8th of a month that has forced Tan to severe ties with his families. Another belief is that he never had any interest in having the first seven children and saved his energy and focus for his eighth child. Sadly Vincent lost both his tentacles in a freak trouser accident which has left him needing to wear future trousers under his arm pits. Tan keeps very close ties with the political elite in Malaysia and was behind the very controversial ‘Conception in November’ law which was passed in the early part of the 21st centaury. Under this law, no mother will be offered a hospital bed during labour for any month other than August. With Tan and his political allies believing that a

FREE MEASURING & FITTING OVER 800 SAMPLES HOME SELECTION SERVICE

country which boasts only those born on the eighth month would be a lucky one. In 2003 Vincents empire grew into the Chinese market, where he found a new love, the colour red. Later that year, Tan opened 74 paint factories in Malaysia which produced over one hundred shades of the colour red. A law was passed in 2004 that every house, business premises and car in Malaysia must be red. It was also written into law that every house number must have the number 8 in its address. In 2010 Vincent Tan bought Cardiff City Football Club and changed its address to 888 Leckwith Road from the initial 34. Much was made about the controversial colour change but much was overlooked. On 3rd September 2011, Vincent Tann changed the name of Cardiff City to take in an extra ‘f’, this has gone unnoticed by many fans and the media but it does mean that the club is 8 letters long. The Welsh Assembly government are due to change the cities name to Cardifff later this year. Vincent Tan is to stand as a Labour representative (colour red) for Cardifff East at the next election and is expected to do well. He has huge backings in the Assembly who are expected to pass similar laws to that in Malaysia over the next few years. Vincent Tan recently opened 17 paint factories in Cardiff, producing only the colour red.

Chn Tacic? Alan Hansen said the following about Swansea after the Spurs loss:“If they keep going like that, they are in trouble. If you are being pressed high up the pitch and trying to pass your way out of trouble, you need seven, eight or nine that are good in possession. Tottenham pressed them time after time and Swansea were just giving it away. Everywhere they just kept on losing it. When confidence was low and the passing went going astray, even the goalkeeper got in on the act. One of his passes was suicidal. At 1-0 down they continued to pass and pass and they were going backwards. What they need is a slight variation in tactics. When they finally varied it and got the ball forward they got their best player Bony into action and got the defence turning. They talk about principles and philosophies and they are great words but I'll give you a better word - survival.”

There are numerous different ways of playing the beautiful game, some are beautiful and some are far less so but we are in a results business.

The idea that we can simply change to a ‘lump it up there’ side is crazy. It is also crazy to simply say that ‘sides have worked us out’. For many a years we have known that Stoke throw the ball up there, the key to stopping them is winning headers and trying to stop the ball getting in the box. It isn’t easy to do though and it isn’t easy to stop the Swans when they are playing well.

It is true that we don’t like being pressed high up the pitch but this isn’t a recent revelation. Sides have been doing this to us for a couple of seasons now and it works for the opposition when we are not at our best, which we haven’t been of late. When we are on top form and we are able to string two or three quick passes together and get behind their pressing midfielders then we are in a far more threatening position than against the sides who sit back and let us come at them. I’m all for a ‘Plan B’ in games, I would like to see us adopt a second striker when chasing the game for example but the idea that we are now in a ‘dog fight’ so we have to play route one football is just stupid. ‘You can’t win anything with kids’ and now you can’t stay up playing passing football. I thought he’d retired anyway! Kantelew half landscape.ai 1 15/09/2011 20:03:20

Swne Ci: Wh l ha rn c?! Today is the day dubbed 'Blue Monday' by the media supposedly the most depressing day of the year for an array of reasons. And if you are a Swansea City fan you'd be inclined to agree! It's a frustrating time for all Swans supporters: the club have been pulled into an early relegation scrap, 50% of the first team are out with injuries, Swansea have the worst home record in the Premier League this season (just two home wins), they've picked up just three points in the last eight games, Laudrup and the team are showing no fight and some fans are seriously questioning the manager's immediate future with the club... it makes for bleak reading, doesn't it? Looking at the back pages of the Evening Post over the last few weeks there seems to have been a constant stream of "rallying calls" issued by the players, but no-one seems to be listening to these calls when on the pitch. The displays are dull, passionless and frustrating. Although it's not the only problem, injuries aren't helping. Currently the first team looks like this: Tremmel Rangel, Chico, Williams, Davies Lamah, Amat, Britton, Pozuelo, Routledge Bony In fairness that wouldn't be so bad, but the fact that nobody is in form makes it painful to look at. In fact the only player who seems to have grown in confidence while the others have become shells of themselves is Wilfried Bony. Many fans - myself included - are questioning why there has been no activity in the transfer window. There have barely been any rumours this Janurary, let alone fresh faces at the club. With the injury list growing by the day (with the current casualties being Michu, Shelvey, Vorm, Dyer, de Guzman, Hernandez and Canas) and defenders having to replace midfielders, it wouldn't be unrealistic to say Swansea need at least three new players to help out. What this all means is Swansea are now 15th and three points from the bottom of the table. Yes, it's been a hard winter of tough fixtures and the injuries have made a serious impact, not to mention the extra games, but something has to change.

Before you start crying, what are the positives? As I just mentioned, Bony is in great form. It seems he has found the spark that was missing earlier in the season. He almost looks like a £12million player. Maybe it's just because other players are feeding the ball to him more, but his shots are the only impressive thing in Swansea's game at the moment and it looks like he could score another ten this season. It's a shame it's happening now when the rest of the team are so poor, but at least it is happening. Another positive is Swansea's defenders are all fit, even if they are out of form. Chico seems terrible at the moment and it's a shame Amat has to play in the midfield because I'd much prefer to see him start alongside Williams at the back. But this is good - at least defence is one of the areas we still have a choice in. So looking on the bright side, we have defenders, we have Bony and it's also not just us who are looking poor there are nine other teams all in this scrap for the Championship. But it's up to Swansea to start winning games and sending themselves up the table and the others down. While it's a shame we didn't beat Man United or Spurs, the reality of it is that those games are much less important than the upcoming ones against Fulham, West Ham and Cardiff, which are all six pointers (apart from the Cardiff game which is a nine pointer!). Forget about the FA Cup - put out a full team of reserves. I don't want to see Bony, Britton, Tremmel, Williams or Rangel near the midlands on the 25th! They all need time to rest and, hopefully, by the time the Fulham game comes around on January 28th we'll have a few of the other first team players back. While this doesn't guarantee a win, it does give us more hope. Then it's up to us as fans to support the team and make some noise. Three wins in three games is a big ask, but against equally poor opposition it's not impossible. An extra nine points would probably see us back in the top ten and give everyone a much needed boost of confidence. The next three weeks and the action of the management, players and fans will all be vital in the survival of this fine football club. Written by Chris Carra for www.forzaswansea.com

probably dyed my hair and made it spikey. Recently we've been spoilt for choice but Michu in his first season had that extra bit of class that made him stand out. He could make a goal from nothing...I hope he still can. Vetch or Liberty? Different age for me and football. Nothing can compare with standing on the North Bank with all of your mates, especially an evening kick off, walking up the ramp and seeing the grass and floodlights. Would I go back? Only if I was 17 and Toshack had just become manager.

When did you first watch the Swans? Can you remember your first game? The First game I saw at the Vetch was v Northampton 20th Sept 1969. I went with Brynhyfryd Junior School football team. We had free tickets in the Double Decker. Frank Large got sent off after a bit of a punch up with a fan. Our team included Jonathan Clarke who went on to play for Manchester United. Mel Charles said he was the best Schoolboy he'd ever seen and had tried to persuade his dad that he shoudl stay with the Swans.

If you could revisit any match and go through all its experiences again, which game would you chose? I loved the Championship play off semi final. After the first leg draw I felt confident but when Leon scored I thought

Who is the best player that you have seen in a Swans shirt? Tricky question. I always think of the Swans in 3 eras, the golden age of my youth, the middle bit and now. The Golden age has to be Alan Curtis. I played in youth teams with Jeremy Charles and Robbie James and they were great players but seeing Curt drop his shoulder and beat the full back was magic. Middle era: Lee Trundle. He was worth the admission fee on his own. Shame I'd gone bald otherwise I'd have

Thank You All For Another Great Christmas Period. Christmas 2013 proved to be our most successful ever! We’d like to thank everyone who visited us over the festive season and to those who donated to our ‘Winter Wonderland’ fundraiser. In total we raised £1080 through the collection box and raffle, and Alun Jones (who you may remember had already put in a lot of hard work constructing the wonderland) has very generously donated £1000 of his own money, making a total of £2080 to present to Cancer Research UK. The generosity of Alun and all of you that made a donation is very greatly appreciated. We’ll barely have time to catch our breath here at The George as the next few months hold a myriad of special occasions. As always, booking is essential for these and the earlier you can book the better the chance that we’ll be able to fit you in. Below are a few of the critical dates for you: Friday 14th February - Valentine’s Day Sunday 30th March - Mother’s Day Sunday 20th April - Easter Sunday Sunday 15th June - Father’s Day As the nights begin to open out, we can’t help but wonder whether we’ll get a nice warm year this year. Last year we brought in our ‘Al Fresco’ menu, designed specifically for you to just pop in without booking and grab a bite to eat on one of our patio areas beside the River Twrch. That little extra bit of sunshine as we serve our customers outdoors makes all the difference, so fingers crossed we’ll be able to do the same this year! Our take away meals became really popular last year too. Initially these tended to be carvery meals on a Sunday, but we can offer our entire menu as a take away for those nights when you want to curl up at home but still want some of the great food we have on offer. This is our first ad of 2014, so we’d like to take the opportunity wish all of you a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. We hope to see you soon. Rob, Jayne and family

WHERE ARE A? It has amazed me quite how amazed people are that we are in a relegation scrap. It is as though, massive sections of our fan base feel that we are too good for that, that we now have a divine right to be in the Premier League and that we should improve on every single season until we eventually win the global galaxy cup against a Martians eleven. And many a fan, commentator and pundit have questioned whether our players are able to have that scrap and desire which is needed to avoid the dreaded drop. I must admit to sharing those concerns, although I do still think that we can stay up on quality alone. Wigan (although they went down last year) managed to stay up season after season, not through crunching tackles and a greater desire but by that extra bit of class. And we are a far better team than they were. My biggest concern about a relegation scrap and the area that we are definitely lacking is actually our fans. We can moan about our player’s lack of desire and enthusiasm and not ‘being up for the fight’ but the Liberty is a morgue, there is no passion there whatsoever. Come to the crunch, we know full well that Upton Park will be hostile and a frightening place to go for the opposition. Selhurst Park and the Stadium of Light will be rocking; Delia will have a few too many Brandy’s

and will get Carrow Road bouncing once more. We can’t hide from the fact that Cardiff will get it going, but can we? Our home form is atrocious but I’m not surprised that our players would rather player away from home. If we are lucky then we have a five minute spell at the start of the game where there is a little bit of singing from the East stand but if we fail to score in the opening few moments then that is about that. I’m not sure what the issue is, whether it is that our expectation is so high that our fans are disillusioned to our current position and can’t bring themselves to use their voice or whether those who have been drumming on about ‘plastics’ are actually right. I think it is probably a bit of a combination of both. Our newer fans have only known the good times, they have only ever seen us doing well, a bit like the Manchester United fans who are soon to be Chelsea fans. For whatever reason, the Liberty has lost its hostility and we only have to look at how comfortable the top sides have found it here to see that. We are in a relegation scrap, I’m confident in our player’s ability, I’m confident in the manager, my faith in our ever silent crowd is seriously dwindling. Before we sack the manager, before we have a right go at the players, let’s bring a bit of pride back to SA1. Where are you?

This month saw the launch of AJA Art, with some amazing sketches of our players and gaffa. I asked Andrew a few questions to go with his unique pics. Are there any players at the club who are especially difficult to draw and if so why? Leon was a bit tricky to draw. It took a little while for me to get his likeness. He is a legend at the club, so I wanted to get it right, and after a bit of a struggle, I think I got a decent likeness in the end Any of the players seen your pics of them? Yes, I sent Chico, Michu and Lee trundle pics on Twitter, and they said some nice things thankfully How long does it take you to draw a player? I'm pretty slow! On average, I'd say around 10-15 hours for an A4 size drawing

Cic T U? To say that I was concerned last season when we had replaced Caulker with a Flamboyant Spanish Centre half who had appeared in a pop video would be a slight understatement. Yet he settled in within no time and was one of our players of the season (with the exception of him trying to decapitate Louis Saha). Since then, for me, he has totally lost the plot. He has basically given a golden chance to the opposition every game and you cannot plan a back four around him. He is a complete liability who has cost us on a number of occasions this season and will continue to again. This might sound harsh. He has had rave reviews from fans and journalists alike but he’s just not worth the risk playing centre back. If he was a striker or a winger who had shocking moments but then a moment of class then great but you can’t risk it at the back. The main attribute that a centre back needs is a brain. Positioning is half the battle, put yourself in the right position and it looks a pretty simple game. Prioritising the danger man is another main skill needed; if a player has the ball 40 yards out and you are marking a player 20 yards out, don’t rush aimlessly to close down the 40 yard shot when that player can then simply slip in your man who is now one on one with keeper. He possesses neither of these skills. Not in the slightest. According to reports, he was superb in the FA Cup win at United, and although it is true

that he did a lot of good (as he always does) he wasn’t within five yards of Hernandez when he scored and could of given a couple more away with plain stupidity. The Agbonlahor goal was equally shocking and not the first like it this season. Chico is drawn to the ball when there is no need and it’s far too easy. We have been in a number of games this season and not taken the points which we have felt we have deserved. Goal scoring has been highlighted as an issue but we cannot keep leaking soft goals and putting pressure on our strikers. Chico has bags of quality, he is great on the ball, he injects some impetuous into our games at times but he isn’t a centre back. He reminds me of David Luiz at Chelsea. A great player, but you know full well that you will get a chance from a David Luiz mistake every game he plays, and Chico is the same.

Pl Rang r Ple Swn So we are over half way through the season and are able to gage who is performing well and who isn’t as yet. At PlanetSwans.co.uk fans can score the players performances after every game. I took a look at the average ratings over the season this far and this is what I thought of it. (Ratings taken from 3rd January) In Goal. Vorm (6.25) is slightly behind Tremmel (6.31) in the ratings. I was really impressed with our German reserve stopper last season but have felt that he has been a distance behind our Dutch number one this year. I’d be lying if I agreed with this. Centre Backs Ashley Williams (6.66) has faired well but I am amazed by how high Chico’s (6.64) rating is. For me, he has been woeful at times this season. Pleasing to see that Amat (6.4) is close behind but for me, he has been more consistent than his more experienced Spanish colleague. Full Backs Our first choice full backs have far better ratings than our second two and I think that has been plainly obvious. Davies (6.5) and Rangel (6.52) are missed when they are not there and although I think that Taylor (5.83) is getting back to his best, Tiendalli (5.68) has been a liability at times. Defensive Midfield Our holding midfielders have impressed planet Swans voters more than anybody else. Leon (6.85) just pipping Jose Canas (6.8) to the highest rating. Both keep us ticking, I’m a massive Leon fan and think we miss him when he isn’t playing, Jose has come in and done a great job. I think that it is likely that the role that they both play will probably give them few low marks and so could look favourably in stats like this. Attacking Midfield Michu (6.6) and Jonjo (6.58) have little between them and both are quality players. De Guzman (5.58) is being slated from all angles and it shows here. I can’t disagree either. Wingers Dyer (6.69) has been far and away our best winger, and I wouldn’t disagree with that. Pablo (6.45), Lamah (6.4) and Pozuelo (6.33) are all quietly behind him, with Routledge (5.59) really struggling to gain any plaudits. I wouldn’t disagree with this although I do think there is more to come from all of them. Up Top I’m pleased that Bony (6.31) has a reasonable rating. You could argue that 6.31 out of ten isn’t a great return on £12.8 million but I would be surprised if the odd person didn’t think about that price tag when placing their score. Vasquez (5.23) is languishingly pretty low down which I think is a bit harsh but strikers do need goals. To give players a mark out of ten for each game. Visit www.planetswans.co.uk

The money is being raised to contribute to the refurbishment of the Bone Marrow Stem Cell Unit on Ward 11 Singleton Hospital. Anna G and the Angel Makers are selling SWANS LIBERTYZ and VALENTINES angel bracelets with profits going to support the LLMF. Swansea City’s Angel Rangel recently got his wife a Valentines bracelet for an early Valentines Day present. While Welsh speaker, Ben Davies got his mother and sister a SWANS LIBERTYZ bracelet on ST DYNWENS DAY. I hope these aren’t surprises as I don’t want to spoil it. We need all the luck we can get on the pitch, so please support this fantastic charity by purchasing a Swans Angel and let’s hope it helps us get some luck on the pitch while you raise money for a fantastic project at the same time. It’s jittery time and suddenly everyone knows better. He ought to be doing this, he ought to have done that – and to make it worse he just shrugs his shoulders, smiles and says they need to do better. Alistair Cook is known not to sweat, I’m sure our iceman manager can compete. Name your sauna and turn up the heat!

But let’s get things in perspective. Swansea, bless them, are a small team in arguably the most competitive league in the world. Look at the table. Take away the top eight teams and all the rest are competing for survival from the start to very near the end of the season. We could have built a team, like many of them have, of muscular athletes that compete by restricting their opponents and then hope for a goal from a set-piece. But the Swansea philosophy, for sometime now, has been to try and win by playing football. And we haven’t got a benevolent billionaire that will sign obscene cheques for the very best – instead we have to trust in the judgement of Laudrup. So who’s he bought or brought in? Michu, De Guzman, Chico, Hernandez, Lamah and Tiendalli last season, selling during the course of it Allen for 15 million and Graham for 5.5 million. And this season after winning the Capital Cup and qualifying for Europe, Pozuelo, Shelvey, Cannas, Vazquez, Amat and Bony. With the exception perhaps of Vazquez I would argue they have all been worthwhile additions particularly when you consider their cost. But more then that they are not has-beens, in the main Laudrup hasn’t just been building for ‘the now’ but the future. Ben Davies, Pozuelo, Shelvey, Taylor, Vazquez, Amat and Boney are all under 25 and most of them by a few years. In fact we have only three first team squad players over 30: Tremmel, Rangel and Britton. I thought last year that we were very fortunate not to have too many injuries. Michu out for six months last year could have been terminal. This year, alas, has been the opposite.

Our talisman has been out along with a long list of absentees. And let’s face it Bony took his time to ‘fire’. But if we’ve had to wait – the wait was worth it! Bony is class. But bit by bit the team is returning. This year we’ve lost to the two Manchesters and Spurs, what were you expecting? We need to beat the teams in our division and with the Vorms, Michus, De Guzmans and Dyers back in attendance I think we’ll be fine. We need to cut out the self doubt and get behind the team. Let’s embrace the FA cup and Europe. When we’re playing well, there’s nobody I’d rather watch – I mean nobody. OK there isn’t a football manager anywhere whose decisions aren’t questioned by the fans (why haven’t we brought back Ki) particularly when things are tough. But who amongst the lower teams would you rather manage the Swans? Have faith. I still reckon we’ll finish mid-table and then with a few less injuries and with Bony, Michu, Shelvey, Pozuelo, Amat and Ben Davies we’ll fly next season.

Wigan (relegated), Newcastle, Bradford (L1), QPR (relegated), Stoke, Chelsea, Fulham, Middlesborough (Championship), Arsenal, West Brom, Newcastle. Malmo, Petrolul Ploies, West Brom, Valencia, Crystal Palace, St Gallen, Sunderland, Fulham, Newcastle, Man Utd (Moyes). Those are the last 21 games that Swansea have won in all competitions, 34 games this season, 34 from last. 13 in the league, 5 this season. Does anybody think this is good enough? Does anybody really still think Laudrup is good enough? Don’t get me wrong, clearly the man knows a bit and we should be grateful, I suppose, for him bringing us our first major trophy but he clearly doesn’t know how to change a system that’s not working. Of the 10 victories we’ve managed this year 4 have come in Europe against teams that haven’t quite worked us out yet, and if I’m honest 3 teams I’d barely heard of before this season (2 of them beat us in the return fixture).

and when it’s not working? They do something else. We however are a team without a plan B when plan A stopped working over a year ago. Who’s fault is that? It’s hard to blame the players, they’re clearly talented and most would fit in well at other top flight clubs, the system just isn’t working anymore. You have a team that includes Dyer, Routledge, Pozuelo, Hernandez, De Guzman, Michu and Bony and you can’t score goals? A side with Davies, Taylor, Rangel, Chico, Britton and Williams and you can’t keep them out? Who’s fault must that be? We could advocate time I suppose, but I don’t think we’ll need to. Laudrup will be there until the end this season regardless. What I am saying is that if your team dominates a game and doesn’t win it’s annoying, when your team dominates every game and never wins, you’re in the shit.

In the league, where everyone has had a chance to work us out: we’re struggling. Beating only our fellow strugglers (but not Cardiff ). I’d rather see a return to the football stylings of Kenny Jackett than watch us limp out of another game with 60% of possession and precisely zero points. Or watch us sit on a 1-0 lead with 30 minutes to go and get utterly caught out, again. I enjoy our identity as a good footballing side but what is happening at the moment is passing for the sake of passing, why play a ball forward when it’s easier to go back? We have in the past been compared to both Arsenal and Barcelona. What a Joke. Take a look at Arsenal, take a look at Barcelona, they’re always looking to create, it’s not possession for the sake of it, it’s a calculated strategy, hold the ball until you see an opening then go for it. They don’t keep the ball and hope for a better chance in five minutes,

This has been a hard page to write all season really. Players are being cropped here there and everywhere and so I can’t really select the likes of Michu who have been out for so long. I think the four here is a compliment and then a criticism of the Laud.

1st

Jonjo: He is such a talent and always looks like the player most likely to make something happen. He is the closest thing to a ‘complete midfielder’ that I have seen in a Swans shirt, he is a creative player who can score and make goals but has that bit of bite about him and desire to win the ball back. He is sloppy at times, which is frustrating but he’s been our best player in a depleted squad in my opinion.

Bony: When he was useless he still boasted a decent goal to game ratio, now he’s all of a sudden world class. He just looks a different player the last month or so, the opposition and scared to get too close to him but give him space and he’s more than happy to let one rip from thirty yards. I feel like he is learning how to play different styles. We all know how good he is in the air and how he likes to feed off crosses but I think he is starting to be able to find room and get involved in other areas of the pitch. His game play against Spurs and Man City was a lot more than just a six yard box centre forward. He’s been outstanding and I think there is still more to come. All of a sudden, dare I say a bargain??

3rd

2nd

Pozuelo I think we all took to Pozuelo pretty early on and I have been waiting for any opportunity to put him in here. He’s a funny player, I’d like to check out his attributes in Football Manager because it is hard to say exactly what makes him good. He’s just lively, he has a wonderful touch on him and a bit of imagination which makes him a pleasure to watch. He’s involved in most of our attacking moves and he puts in a shift tracking back as well. I hoped that he would have chipped in with a few more goals by now, yet to score in the league. Signing of the season for me.

Special Mention: Ki He’s been by far and away the best player Swansea own this season, putting in consistent performances and chipping in with a few goals from midfield. From what I gather, he is a cert for player of the year up the North East and has won over many admirers. I really don’t understand why he hasn’t either been sold or brought home, we are crying out for a player like him and we own him. Time will tell but he looks like he may be the man who keeps Sunderland up, but at whose expense?
