You know that you are an established Premier League side when you start saying the words ‘three points but they were awful!’ Those words have left my mouth quite a few times this year with Newcastle being the most recent example of it. It shows how complaisant us fans have become, how quickly we have evolved into our upper-mid table security. It wasn’t that long ago that every side was a quality team, every team home and away had to be treated with respect because they were all more than capable football teams; they were all outstanding. The Championship was a tough league to get out of; do you remember when we would say that? Now, Chelsea are good; Arsenal on their day but that’s it. The rest of the league is mediocre at best. What has changed? We have! It is the same top quality league with the best players in the world in it but now they don’t seem all that impressive because we are every bit as good. A decade ago we would use the words ‘Billy Sharp, what a player he is’, now we have a main striker with caps for France and a back-up with caps for Portgual and we bemoan the lack of quality!

Olivero has really confused us all with a pretty decent performance at St James’ park. Throw Michu in the mix and we don’t know whether we have three, two, one or no decent strikers for next season. Hopefully Mr Monk has a better idea and has seen enough. The last few games have made it painfully obvious that we need extra cover at full back. I feel slightly sorry for Jordi Amat but surely we have someone in the under 9s who looks more comfortable in that position! We have an interview with Supporters Trust chairman Phil Sumbler in this issue; I got a bit carried away with the questions and so it’s a long one as I really couldn’t leave anything out. He really sheds some light on a lot of things that have been going on behind the scenes at the club and how he sees the club and the trust moving forward. As well as that, we have all the usual. I hope you enjoy! Cheers

The striker situation has all gone slightly strange hasn’t it, Gomis looked like he was finally winning us over and securing a starting place for next season but then picked up an injury and

At this very moment in time there is probably nobody on the planet that I would prefer to interview for Jack Swan magazine than Mr Phil Sumbler. The chairman of the supporters trust kindly gave up some of his time to speak to me and reveal what happened with the potential American deal and what his and the trusts view is on any potential sale. For anyone who doesn’t know, what is the supporters trust? We are not a government organisation but the supporters trust is backed by supporters direct which is government funded and its basically designed to give a little bit of protection to supporters as far as any football club goes but also designed to get people more involved within their football club and to have an understanding of how it works. You have the central organisation of supporters direct which any trust can go to and ask ‘how do we do this?’ or how to interact with a board member or chairman or something like that. One of the things that is widely missed though is that they don’t only apply to football and so if you look throughout the country at the supports direct website, they have rugby union clubs, rugby league clubs, there are a whole host of sports which have organisations and it s just designed to get more integral with the football club. I didn’t know that. Was that the case at the start? Did you get that backing right from the beginning?

internet became more used by supporters whereas if you went back to the mid-90s, you would go to the football, watch the game with a few of your mates, you’d go home and forget about football until the following Saturday. As the internet came along we’d go to the football, have a pint with your mates and then go on the internet to read what other people thought about the game and as you started reading that, people started putting thoughts into your own head; how the club was run, what you think of the owner and I think that is how the trust in Swansea came about.

We got a little bit lucky. The Swans trust came about with the advent of the internet because the

There was a large dose of luck at the time but I think that had the club not have been formed at that time then the luck wouldn’t have happened because there wouldn’t have been anyone ready to act; encourage others to basically put their money where their mouth was which is exactly what did happen. Have Supporters direct been helpful as well? You see countless government departments which are run appallingly, is this actually a decent one? Supporters direct are brilliant. The key for me is that they are run by football fans, so the people who work inside, the people who give the advice are football fans, they understand the mentality of how a football fan works and I guess what we want from our club is what they want from their club and so the advice is always good, its always strong. I can’t remember what the number is, I think there are 130 or 140 trusts up and down the country and there is always someone who has been through something which you have been through, someone you can ask a question. to the Premier League the football club bought back Mel Nurses shares and those shares were basically cancelled and so the shareholding went down and so everything went up by a little bit. Are the trust keen to increase that stake? Yes. We had three main visions; to maintain professional football in Swansea, to bring the club closer to its community and to hold a shareholding within the club and a seat on the board. Our mandate, every time we have surveyed our members has always been that we should do everything we can to own shares in our football club. So that is why we continue to go out, even now when we have quite a lot of money in the bank, we are still out fundraising because the key to us is that a share in the football club when we bought it was £1, you wouldn’t buy a share in Swansea football club now for a pound: you might

be able to in ten years time; who knows what is around the corner but we have to have a good fund in case someone around the corner said that they wanted to sell their shares and they are worth a million pound. Are there any expenses for the trust? Is anybody paid or is it totally voluntary? The trust board works purely on a voluntary basis so we have a board of, I think its twelve elected members and 4 cooperative members and a couple of affiliates, so we have a legal affiliate for arguments sake who gives us advice when we need to but all of them work on a voluntary basis. We hold a board meeting pretty much once a month, we might miss the odd one depending on peoples availability. We had a vote when the recent discussions with the Americans was going on about claiming expenses as me and Huw were going up to London but we decided that we didn’t want to claim expenses but we do appreciate that if someone is to go 400 odd miles for us then we should probably cover their petrol. What was talked about with the sale of the club? There was a term sheet given to us by the guys who wanted to buy the club that simply said that they would buy 30% of the available shares on a pro-rata basis with the outset of a potential commercial loan and agreement that over the next six years, at the three year part and the six year part they would purchase an extra 15% each time to eventually own 60% of the club. We were and I think that we probably always will be adamant that we didn’t want to sell our shareholding. Had that term sheet had gone into a formal offer then we would have taken that to our members and said that this is our

viewpoint and we’d of heard a vote on it. When you say ‘pro-rata’ what do you mean by that? What it basically means is that no share holder was going to sell their full shareholding. So each shareholder would have said that ‘yes we are interested in a deal and interested in selling shares’ so that if you were share holder A then you would sell 30% of your shareholding as would shareholder B, C, D and E until you got to 30% of the club. So us saying that we wouldn’t sell our 21% means that of the remaining 79%, 30% of that would be sold And so 35% or whatever.

And that was rejected by the board? The deal never went so nobody declined the deal, the Americans expressed an interest that they probably didn’t want to take the deal any further and so it just died down. It never came to a vote. The fans would know if that offer had been made formal because at that time then we would have called a public meeting with our members and taken their opinions off the back of it. Its quite an interesting scenario to be in because legally the trust board is elected to make those decisions but we were unanimous between us that we couldn’t make that decision just as twelve individuals. We had to ask our voting members what we wanted to do. They could have said ‘don’t sell’ and we could have turned around anyway and said well we are going to but we’d of had to be incredibly stupid to go against the viewpoint of our members because it would probably be the end of the organisation at that point.

There is an irony to it because it has been suggested that we should have sold and there is an argument for it from some people who say that if 30% of a football club is worth £30 million then 21% is worth £21 million so we are sitting on a 21% stake and people were saying that we should sell it now And then when everything goes tits up, come to the rescue?

increase it not to sell it.

There would be no gain for the trust though would there? There would be no point in the trust having £10 million in the bank but no football club?

To me it is quite a flawed business plan, to sit here and say actually we are ready to step in if it all goes wrong because none of us want it to go wrong for the football club and that’s the stupid part. The pain we went through in 2001 is a pain we shouldn’t want to go through even if we have got £10 million in the bank ready to jump in and save it; it might not be enough. We have worked hard to get to that 21%, it’s a big stake and for me we should work hard to

key metrics for us. Firstly 51% is a nice one as you have a majority, you make the decisions. There is a ten percent one which is a nice one, it means that you can never be forced to sell your shares, so if you owned 10.1% and if someone else came in and bought the other 89.9% then you can’t be forced to sell yours. If you own 9.9% and someone buys the other 90.1% then yours is a drag along sale. The other key one to us is over 25% because 25% gives us key rights to veto in certain situations. So if we had 25.1% and someone else had the rest then we would be in a stronger position than what we are currently with 21%. I’m guessing that’s an aim? We would absolutely love to get there. There has been protections in the past to stop any shareholder getting beyond 25% and we have been quite happy to run with that given the current board member set up as we feel that it’s right at the moment. If the current shareholder set up was to change and potentially an outsider came in then that for us would be the point where that would change and it should be in the interest of everyone to get the trust to 25.1% and that’s not about me, its not about you but about the trust in the long term. Is there tension between the trust and the board? No. No I don’t think so. Probably no more than what there ever has been. We believe that we have a strong working relationship with the board; Huw Cooze has worked hard on that over the last ten years to make sure that he is an integral part of the board, working closely with them. There are clearly times that we

disagree with them but that is democracy. He’s got a tough job hasn’t he Huw Cooze because he is in between the trust and the board? Huw gets a lot of unfair criticism for what happens in his world because he has to be an integral part of the board, whichever way you look at it then we are the third largest shareholder and so our director should be an integral part of the board. There is an argument to say that actually Huw should be there saying ‘you shouldn’t do that, you shouldn’t do that’ and being a nagging conscious but at that point then it feels like a token gesture. If they call him in just for him to have his say and then send him on then he’s a token gesture. Huw has to be a proper member of the board and he and I have had countless conversations to say that everything that we do should be for the fans. 16 P S don’t overprice the fans. There have been instances this year where we have managed to drive down ticket prices which we may not have done without Huw’s involvement and so I think that a lot of the criticism he gets is unfair. He has to be an integral part of the board, if not we become a token gesture. I wouldn’t want his job to be honest, he’s got to keep people happy from all sides and it’s not possible. I don’t think that there are many people who could do his job in fairness. I agree, not at all. Do you expect new board members fairly soon? I don’t think the concept of a sale has gone away. The longer we stay in the Premier leagued, the longer people notice a club which is stable, potential and so I think that potential new offers could come in and similarly I get it when the current board have said that they have done this for close to fifteen years and that’s a long time, so I get that people want to move on but actually we did it the right way. The board of directors are very involved in the football club.

Do they deserve a good pay off? That’s a question and a half! I don’t blame any of the board members for having their heads turned with huge sums of money. I think that was one of your points in last month’s magazine, it’s a massive amounts of money. If you are saying to someone who invested £100,000 that its potentially now worth £10 million then that is a phenomenal amount of money. We believe that since the club has got into the Premier League and has started paying dividends, this stake is being returned to the shareholders once a year, so we are four years in; probably a forth dividends on its way and so that dividends is coming back. I think that the current board of directors deserve every accolade that is thrown at them for what they have done to this club, I think that they have made an immense achievement. I don’t think that anybody could begrudge them that

18 P S money but obviously the purpose of us is to get the right deal fore this football club and if that means that someone walks away with £3 million in their pocket then so be it; as long as it’s right for the football club. What attributes does such a person require? Or what attributes must they not have? A new board member? Everything we have done had been with the best interest with Swansea City football Cub at heart and anyone coming in would have to do that as well. Anybody who is coming in and saying ‘if I do this then I will make that’ is wrong. There are things that goes on at the football club which we don’t necessarily agree with as supporters, people probably say to you that the sale of Bony was cheap, we have a player who wants to go and a football club who was only willing to pay this much money, you are caught in the middle, if the player wants to go then you probably have to let him go. Was it a good deal? Based on his form over the last three months then its starting to look like it! Board members have got to want what is best for this football club How important is it that Huw Jenkins remains chairman? Massively. Huw is the best chairman in the top four divisions by a country mile. Nobody will ever appreciate the work he has put into this football club, his own personal expense and the time that has gone into this for years and years. I don’t know how he does it; he always seems to get the best out of people. then they were adamant that Huw had to stay on; if he wasn’t staying on then they wasn’t interested. The challenge for me is that Huw does what he does with love, with passion. I know he’s paid for it but he probably puts in far more than his remuneration is justified but it becomes a lot harder to do that when you have £7 million in the bank. To have that same motivation to get up and do it. If you said to me tomorrow that he is leaving then I would genuinely be devastated and I think most people would be; for

20 P S me I think he’s the best chairman that we have ever had. I spoke to Nigel Rees about Huw Jenkins and he told me that people don’t realise how good a football brain he has. He isn’t just the money man He understands football inside out, he possibly didn’t when he first came in. Clearly it was a big learning curve for him. All of a sudden being the director of a football club but he’s’ got it. He understands football inside out and you only have to look at Martinez, Brendan Rogers, certainly Garry Monk, they were appointments that people looked at and though ‘what?’. I genuinely remember a conversation with Huw Cooze when he first said the name to me of Brendan Rogers and I said ‘you got to be joking!’ Twelve months later we are a Premier League club and you just go blimy! Going back a few points, if there was a veto in place, can you see the trust ever using its veto in a position like that? If you wanted to get a manager in or not want one or to sack a manager? Would have been handy with Kevin Cullis maybe To me the veto isn’t about football decisions. It’s not just us; most the board members now accept that decisions are left to Huw. He is the football man, he consults. Leigh has told me this in the past; he was on the phone to Leigh for three hours persuading him about one of the managers. He will want everyone to agree but we are now at the stage where if Huw came forward in three months time and said that he

What realistic fears do you have with new board members? We had a difference of opinion on planet swans about this? Realistic fears that the progression that we have had over the last ten years will stop. That people will come in and don’t get the club. Swansea is different; there are a whole host of people who live around here who care passionately. The Tony Petty days taught me a lot about what people thought of the football club. My fear is that anyone would come in and just won’t get it; they will look at us as a bit of a cash cow. Try and take money out of the club which is not the way that we want to go about it

We just talked the figures £30 million for 30%, do you think that’s a good investment? If you wanted to make money? Football clubs are rubbish investments. I don’t believe that you can make money out of a football club. Not long term, short term you could probably. Day one you could take 30% of the TV rights and you got your £30 million back. The moment you do that then the club suffers, you get relegated to the Championship and your investment is gone. Football clubs are not a good investment and that is why you have to question why people with no connection to the area and to the club want to invest in it. You have to question it. Of course you have to question it but the point which I was trying to make is that certain people are scared that investors are coming in to make a quick buck and I can’t see why an American owner with a billion pound in the bank would see Swansea City Football Club as a way to make a good return on their investment. I don’t think it would be for financial reasons

difficult. Going back to one of your questions, why is the trust here and this is the important part, its about us turning to the fans and saying ‘we don’t get it’. Look at Abramovic, if he wants to come in and invest a couple of hundred million then we are probably going to let him but there aren’t many Abramovic about and if there was another one then he will probably want a Liverpool or an Arsenal. There were probably some advantages to the American deal, their knowledge of the American market, the game is growing out there so that was a big one but I find it difficult to see why that investment would come in without them wanting a return but at the same time its hard to see that return without losing what is most important and that’s the £100 which Sky TV give us each year. I can envisage in the future us sitting at a table (with a different deal and investors) and thinking that this is a good deal. Put it this way, take the Americans for example, we wanted a retention of our seat on the board, we wanted a right to non-dilution so that we would never lose our percentage by them reissuing new shares which we couldn’t afford to buy just to get us down and we wanted a

right to veto without having 25%. If we had got those three things then arguably we would have had more protection than what we have now.

But to investors, the trust is seen as a bad thing isn’t it? We met Charles Noell (Associate of John Moores: Potenial American Investor) we took the two guys who were advising us, myself and Huw Cooze back to Heathrow one Monday morning. He was quite adamant that he wanted the trust involved. I think that we are all powerful to an outside investor, they have to get us on side because as much as we can’t block a sale, we can make it incredibly uncomfortable. If we had to go to a public meeting and stand up in front of two, three or four thousand supporters and say that ‘this is the wrong thing for the football club, what we are asking from you is for us to have a peaceful protest outside the Liberty before the next match’ then there could be 5,000 people there. If they are watching that then it is off putting, they are going to want the fans on side.

mentioned in the film) the meeting in the Builders and there was the North Bank alliance, a couple of people who run websites, a load of people who you would never have put in a room together and everyone was saying that ‘I’m going to do this’ or that, some went off and super glued the locks at the Vetch, all manor of things they did and to me that is the story which never went away and so I’m adamant that when ever anyone shows interest in the club then we should show them the book and say ‘its just a history about the club’ so they can see it. With Planet Swans, you probably have a better idea than anyone as to how much interest there is in the football club. Is it continuing to grow? Yes and I think it always will, the club as they become more secure in the Premier League are just getting more and more well known. First and foremost, if you walk around Swansea now we are seeing people in Swansea tops which you just didn’t see before. You can now go to anywhere in this country and they will talk to you about some of our players and you can now get that abroad. You go abroad, wear your Swans shirt as that is what you do and someone will come up to you and talk about football. The Premier League is one of the most watched in the world it’s the one that gets

gets the most exposure and so the longer we are in it then we will continue to grow. Your starting to sound like a crazy optimist like me, do you think that we can continue to progress? Where is the limit? Every time I look at something I think that we are probably at the limit and then I look at something else and think that maybe we are not quite there yet. I don’t envisage us being relegated at this time. I probably did when we first came in, I thought that we would struggle but I thought that we wasn’t going down in about November in our first season and I have never thought that we were going to since and I don’t see it in the near future.

have looked at in a while. We get a massive amount of interest from South Korea because of Ki. Huw Cooze told me a couple of months back that the club did one of their online videos of an interview with Ki and it got something like 10,000 hits in about 2 hours, most from South Korea. We get a lot from the USA but one thing I have seen from the internet is that the interest has always been there because of the expat. You go on Planet Swans so you know we have people posting from America, Australia, all over the world and so I don’t think that

We do things the right way, there are clubs that come into this division and just spend stupid money on players that they can’t afford and aren’t that good and we continue to find managers and players who do a good job for us. Its hard to see us getting much higher, I’d like to think that we have some cup runs in us, maybe a couple of cups, maybe a back door route into Europe but I can’t see a day where we can break that top four unless someone changes the rules. I’m probably a bit more crazy than you then. I get to see which country people are reading the jack swan magazine in online, I’m assuming that you can do the same with the website, which countries are getting the swans bug? I must admit it’s not something which I

There are times when it is harder than others. It is exceptionally difficult when people are having a pop If you were to be stuck in a lift for three hours at the job that you do because they don’t think you with a regular poster on planet swans, which one are doing it well or they don’t like the way you would you least want it to be? handle it or stuff like that but I enjoy the job and its not massively challenging, I’m the figurehead and Least want it to be? Oh I’m just going to become rightly or wrongly the members say that I’m the unpopular aren’t I! I’d have to say, oh, I want to say Agent Dimmy but do you know I think I would least like to be stuck in a lift with me. That’s as diplomatic as you could be there isn’t it? Ok, I am going to answer it. If you had taken me back and he still posts now and then and it’s Stan the Jack. Because his chat is terrible and if you ever go on one of Ugo’s busses then he’s’ terrible and he knows that as I tell him it. Do you think that you get enough recognition for what you have done for the club? More than enough. I don’t do it and I don’t think any of the trust do it for recognition. I find it quite embarrassing when you see people saying ‘you did this’ or ‘you did that’, I do what I can. I’m not here for recognition, I’ve said it time and time again that there is an election every two years where I have to get re-voted in and if I ever don’t get re-voted in then its because there is someone out there who can do a better job than me and that has to be a good thing so as long as the trust and club progress then I’m happy. Are you happy with your current role? Are we safe to expect you to still be chairman of the trust for the foreseeable future?

P S right person to be the figurehead and so I’m the person who stands up and does the talking, gives out awards or whatever but there is a great board behind me and so it is relatively easy job to do. I have no intensions of standing down at this time, when the election comes up, if I get voted down then that’s different. I think we got a lot of criticism for the way that we handles the American deal, lack of communication, told we were being taken for a ride, not taken seriously but I think that we did everything absolutely right, we could have been a little bit better with communication at times and that isn’t just to our members but probably to our board as well but we worked on the principle that if we didn’t have anything to say then don’t say things for the sake of it because then you get questioned more. We had a forum and we had 200 people there and we answered every single question there and I think that is somewhere where we don’t get credit enough. Would you ever like to see the trust have totally control of the club? 100% shares?

Networkingin ina pub? a pub? Networking Have you ever been to an official networking doo? It is awful! People pay a fortune a year to join a networking business, dress up and pretend to be someone that they are not so that they can speak to other people pretending to be people that they are not just so they can give each other business.

Am I missing something here? How about a pint? Anyone? Introducing

‘Jack Swan Networking!!!’

Basically, we will go to a different pub each month, speak to fellow business owners and ‘network’ without paying anybody anything (apart from for your pint) and without getting dressed up or pretending to be anyone that we are not.

Doesn’t that sound more like it?

Next meet is in the Brunswick in Swansea on Wednesday 13th May @ 5:30pm. Get there when you can!

Any questions call 07880 369545

They Do WHAT???????

In our most recent networking in a pub outing, we met Paul Griffiths who does this:Excel and Microsoft Office Developer - automating MS Office processes to improve efficiencies and reduce the amount of time needing to be spent on reporting and regular administrative processes. Now you know! Come join in at our next meet.

I don’t think that it is ever possible. Not just with owning the shares but from a practical sense; volunteers running the club. It is fine in the Premier League era, we have a large turnover and so potentially we could have a whole army of people underneath us reporting in to a board of directors but when you look at league one and league two, probably even the championship then you don’t get that level of income and so you need to keep the costs down to a bare minimum and the way that we do that is by having the shareholders doing the work for us and so as much as I’d like to increase the stake, at 100% then I would be quite uncomfortable and I think we all think the same, we want other shareholders, other directors which have individual levels of expertise and that is what we have at the moment, we have a really nice balance and that’s another thing to have for the future. A really huge thanks to Phil for meeting up with me. As you can see, there was a lot that I wanted to ask him and a lot I hope you wanted to read.

Question for the mag: Which person would you say has made the greatest contribution to our rise over the last 14 years? and why? Robert Wayne Cook Martinez he started the way we are famous for playing Christopher Aston Huw Jenkins Alex Collins Tony Petty. He gave everyone something to unite against which set us on our path. I am being serious with this one, because of Petty, the supporters trust was born, Huw Jenkins, Martin Morgan and everyone else became involved...it all stems back to Petty. Ian Wishart I'd say Huw Jenkins. And Mel Nurse. If it wasn't for them i don't think we would have a club now. Huw is self explanatory. Mel is really the only person who stood up to and saw right through Petty's dodgy Dealings. I and a lot of older Swansea fans hold a lot of respect for Mel. Ivor Lobon Brian flynn for keeping us in the football league also kenny jackett for steadying the ship Martin Davies Yes - huw jenkins no doubt -next mel nurse and the fans Stephan Jones James Thomas Alister Wheeler Agree with the James Thomas answers, don't think we would have bounced back or progressed like we have had we not escaped relegation that day. #JT9 ...obviously Brian Flynn contributed to that and made some key signings that have gone on to be influential to our rise.

Jordan McGuire Mel Nurse. Robert Melen It's almost impossible to pick one individual, the success has been achieved by the fans, board and team all working together. Saying that, If I was to choose, it would be a gentleman called Richard Lillicrap. Neil Pritchard The fans for putting pressure on petty to leave and the consortium for buying the club. Unlike other clubs the jacks will not bend over and take it . While our club is in danger. Or believe the bulls*it of a bond bad guy .. Why do the sh*t ones look like bond villains ? Andy Jones kevin amankawah Steven Edwards Huw jenkins Andy Jones and of course cyril the swan and remember syd the cygnet Sean Richards Lee trundle! Living ledgend! Phil Doherty Huw and the jack army never lost faith unlike Cardiff losing their premiership status Spenser Davies Jack-swan fanzine....because of the jokes - it keeps everyone grounded... Marc Sherlock They all have helped us get to this point each person add a little bit and it is down too huw Jenkins for keeping the same type of manger and the swans fans new and old if I had too

............don't forget to check there's no one at the door evey few minutes My wife found out that our dog, a Schnauzer, could hardly hear, so she took it to the vet. The vet found that the problem was hair in the dog's ears. He cleaned both ears and the dog could then hear fine. The vet then told Andrea that if she wanted to keep this from recurring she should go to the store and get some "Nair" hair remover, then rub that in the dog's ears once a month. So Andrea went to the store and bought some "Nair" hair remover.

At the cash register, the pharmacist told her, "If you're going to use this under your arms, don't use deodorant for a few days." Andrea replied, "I'm not using it under my arms." So the pharmacist said, "OK, If you're using it on your legs, don't use body lotion for a couple of days." To which Andrea said "I'm not using it on my legs either. If you must know, I'm using it on my Schnauzer." The pharmacist said, "Well, don't ride your bike for about a week."

but that isn’t the football of today. Today it is all about today! Worry about tomorrow when tomorrow comes! And in my 1) opinion Jonjo isn’t in my first team plans today.

1)

A big part of this isn’t just that we have better central midfielders. We have good options going forward. Montero looks ridiculously dangerous, Siggy is outstanding, Bony is (and I genuinely mean this word) World class and Dyer/Routledge/Barrow are all very capable2) on their days. So what we need is for them to have the ball, 2) we need a midfield which is controlling, a midfield who can win the ball back and give it to our danger men and that is what Leon and Ki can offer. This is short sighted but I do feel far less inclined to ‘nurture’ talent than I have previously. We don’t really 3) and players aren’t loyal in anyway and so I need money don’t see the 3) point in playing him in order to smooth the diamond. I think that those days have possibly gone in terms of the Premier league. Each game is too

important for that and at this moment in time, he isn’t in our first eleven in my opinion. It is sad in a lot of ways that football has come to this but that is where we are. It may simply be that the British footballing world has become more professional and that this will bring the very best out of young players. It may well force players like Jonjo to be even better but you can also see why the English FA are concerned about players lacking minutes. But I couldn’t care less about the FA and I doubt the Swans People have do either.

complained

If I could get Jonjo to sign a ten year contract in the pastand he had no possible way of leaving itthat then I’d play this is him now but there is no loyalty in football and so in many ways too hard. I it is the footballers that are brining it on themselves. assure Why should a club invest time and playingyou minutes into a player who will jump at thethat first chance this is they get?

the hardest we have ever done. Be amazed if anyone gets the link

52 Gi F Aw Fn The Liberty stadium is a rich mans Vetch field and like many new stadiums, has lost that bit of magic that the old ground had. Maybe character just needs time to develop but we can’t hide from the fact that the new ground has certainly been a major reason for the Swans success since 2005. It was then that the Swans played their first game there with a friendly against Premier League outfit Fulham, which was a massive club to play against back then for the league one side! It is named the Liberty Stadium due to a sponsorship contract from the Statue of Liberty! Visits to New York globally have trebled since the naming. Everything inside the stadium is useless and overpriced like basically every ground these days. I would seriously suggest having a beer and some food before you get to the ground. There are some brilliant, friendly pubs on the way into Swansea and most pubs will welcome away fans with a bit of banter but half a brain! JK’s Club is a couple of junctions before the stadium and I know Karen welcomes away fans and its 2 minutes from the motorway.

start of it, locals will drag you off to wherever they are going from there but it’s a good place to start! Parking is useless around the stadium, we are expanding the ground and nobody has a clue how this will work. We actually have an old train station that is a 2 minute walk from the stadium but it doesn’t make sense to reopen this somehow: the powers at be!! If your happy to pay a fiver then you will find somehwere close, if not, you will have a walk! Onto the club: We are awesome. I’m sorry to tell you that and I expect you already knew it but we are. The club is run by a board of directors who are Swans fans, with 20% share holding being held by the supporters trust. Our chairman took no wage and no expenses for the first few years he was with us and the whole board are borderline worshiped. On the pitch: We are pretty damn sexy there too! We demand good passing football and we get what we want. Leon Britton is god here, how he has never played for your national team just shows the clear stupidity of your past managers.

If you are travelling by rail, please don’t judge Swansea by the train station and its surroundings! The city is stunning; there are some magical spots for whatever you are looking for, it just so happens that if you enter the city via a train, you enter the part of the city designed for junkies. Wind Street is the lively place for a night out or at least the

Crowd: It is no Vetch but then the Premier League is no Division 3. It’s getting better at times and we are renowned as one of the best and most vocal fans in the league (which says a lot about the prem). Just to let you know, ‘sheep shagging’ is no insult, fire away! Make a weekend of it! Whatever you want, Swansea has it! People are friendly as can be. Don’t be a prick and you will be fine

& W y lo! Stoke Two sides who people have arguing have had little to play for of late but I expect both sets of players to be well up for this one. The return of Neil Taylor will be a massive boost against a side who like to get down the flanks, they will target Rangel on the other side and that would be a concern for me going on recent performances.

to swan around the park looking pretty but he doesn’t do half that. I can only see a Swans win here; A comfortable win. 3-0 Swans.

I expect Swansea to almost ‘bully’ Stoke in the middle of the park; I know this sounds crazy but I am almost certain that we will shape up with our ‘diamond’ in order to get the extra player in that mixing pot and with Cork, Shelvey and Ki; I think we will win the scrap. I can see it being quite an open game and Swans pinching it 3-2. Man City It is a shame that the teams below the Champions League have dropped off the pace as I could see this game being the day that Citeh drop out of the Champions League places. They aren’t that good. With the exception of Aguero, they are an overrated set of players. David Silva doesn’t do enough for me, not enough to warrant him doing absolutely nothing defensively. If he was banging in 15 gaols a season and 15 assists then I’d be more than happy for him

Towards the end of a regular drunken session I ask a couple of mates ‘how racist they are?’ to which the correct reply came; ‘not at all’. I responded with the following questions (not ones from Ricky Gervaise in Extras if that’s what you are thinking!):How likely is it that John Terry will manage Chelsea in the future? To which we all agreed that there is a very likely chance that this would happen. How likely it is that Frank Lampard will manage Chelsea in the future? We all agreed that it is possibly slightly less likely but there is still a very reasonable chance that this will happen. And thirdly I asked how likely is it that Didier Drogba would manage the club? To which the response was a unanimous understanding of my initial question.

Les Ferdinand spoke of ‘covert racism’ in football and he is 100% right and we are all guilty of it, I don’t believe it is conscious or even that it is our fault but

its there. What he was saying was that we are racist without knowing that we are and certainly without meaning to or wanting to be. There is no way that I would call the two people I had this conversation with racist but they, like myself and you (I imagine) can easily picture Lampard or Terry as a future Chelsea manager but not Drogba. All three players are worshiped by the fans and I’m certain that these fans would welcome Fat Frank or Mr Racist himself to their dug out but how about a black African? Les Ferdinand himself has recently been singled out as a great coach by Harry Kane; Peter Crouch has pilled on huge plaudits to him for helping him while he joined Spurs and yet nobody has taken a punt on him as their manager.

He retired in 2006, since this point Gareth Southgate, Roy Keane, Alan Shearer, Tim Sherwood, and our very own Garry Monk has all had their first managerial jobs in the Premier League. No experience; straight to the top! I’m sure you would have noticed that they are all white so do we in football still struggle to see the brain of a black player? We are able to appreciate their pace and power and skill but it is rare that our great black players get called ‘clever’ in the same way that we do for a Rooney or a David Silva. I am not racist. I know that I would never usually think less of a person attributes to do a job because of the colour of their skin and I’m very aware that I am about to say the dreaded ‘I am not racist but….’ Sentence BUT I do accept that I am covertly racist in terms of judging how an ex-footballer could manage

a team; instinctively! We all are! It is throughout the game. Every time we watch a game on Sky or Match of the Day we are being told of how ‘great a football mind’ Dennis Bergkamp has, how ‘clever’ Teddy Sherringham is, how Paolo Di Canio is a genius. All of these would make fantastic managers in our mind but how about Dion Dublin? Sol Campbell? Andy Cole? Jimmy Floyd Hasslebank? Dwight York? Emille Heskey?

Peter Crouch could never be a manager; he is too tall. Gianfranco Zola looks ridiculous; he was far too short. The reality is that we generally want our

Are these people not clever? Was their movement not clever off the ball? Their positioning? Did they seriously manage to make a footballing career without understanding the game? I don’t enjoy saying it but I think that Les Ferdinand was spot on although I’m not totally convinced we are ‘just’ racist. We are all clearly sexist as well; if we think that it is difficult for black men to enter the top of football management then Women are a million miles behind once again; obviously women can’t know anything about football, can’t manage and would be totally out of their depth! Wouldn’t they?

Fabianski I have been concerned all season that he may not be able to last the pace; that he’d struggle mentally to concentrate for a whole season as it has been years since he has had a full season as number one. As things have turned out, he has been our most consistent performer and seems to keep getting better. He made his glaring mistake up at Anfield but has been Mr dependable ever since. He looks like a ten year old in ten year old sized goals at times, if that makes any sense. He looks like he is small and agile but he’s 6 foot 2. For me, he has to make a mistake in the next 5 games not to be my player of the year! Ash Has there been a more consistent centre back in the Premier League over the last four seasons? Stop and think about that for a second! I’m struggling. Vincent Komany is magnificent on his day, Terry is generally a reliable centre back even if he does have a face you want to head butt although he did have a dodgy spell last season. The only players I can think of who have been reliable over the last four seasons are Cahill and Jagielka but either way, the captain of Wales is right up there wit h the very best centre backs in the league. His organisation is good, I would like him to give people a bit more verbal at times; go on! They deserve it!!

Ki He was strolling away with this award this time last month but he’s just dropped short at the penultimate hurdle. I think tiredness has got the better of him as his performances have been a bit off the pace this month. He obviously had that trip to the Asian cup and played in the world cup last Summer and so it is totally understandable if the body is starting to yearn for a break. He’s been tremendous and if he is voted player of the year then he deserves it but for me, I like to look over the entire season and at this very moment in time I feel like the last couple of games added with the games that he was away for means that he is slightly behind the top two. Special Mention: Federico Fernandez

3rd

I have said these exact words at least twice in here before but I’m going to say them one more time; no South American centre back has strolled into the Premier League with such ease. They aren’t supposed to, don’t ask me why not but they just don’t. Federico has been a touch of class from day one and him and Ash should be a pairing for a number of years assuming that someone doesn’t come knocking. Really great season!

In our final run up to the election, I met up with Ed Hastie, the Conservative candidate for Neath. How is this area performing? I think it depends on where you look. We have a number of shops closing in the high street which is never a good sign but you have a number of very small and specialised boutiques which seem to be doing quite well which is ultimately good for Neath as people come in to get set things. The only problem is that a weekly shop is much more difficult. If you look at the market for example, footfall is down 45% and total turnover in the Milland Road car park is down 32% and that has had a knock on effect on all trade in Neath simply because car parking charges have trebled and as a result people are put off coming. What should drive the economy in this area? One of the main assets that we have is tourism. Or more the potential for tourism; we’ve got the castle, a twelfth century abbey, a royal charter and we are the home of Welsh rugby and none of these are celebrated the way that they should. So you go to the Abbey and it is a ruin, if that was in England then you would have gift shop, you would probably have walky talkies giving a guided tour. That is why having an integrated tourism policy would make a real difference. In the Aberdulais Falls there is the hotel there, magnificent hotel there, fantastic building but its empty, its falling down. Is the word ‘Tory’ still a dirty word around here?

Yes and no. I think it depends a lot on peoples perception because a lot of people will vote on the basis on party label so for example if you go up to someone and say ‘;I think you should vote conservative’ they are either going to say ‘no’ or ‘why?’. If you go up to them and say that you are campaigning to promote tourism in the area, free car parking every Friday, I want to restore the Neath Abbey Ironworks to become a major tourism attraction. Whenever I say that to people that these are my policies they say ‘that’s great,

Lets just go to a personnel level, lets say that a person earns £10,000 a year but they are spending £20,000 a year, they can’t do that forever. As a country we were spending much

Tip of the Month more than we should have been under the previous government for all sorts of reasons but ultimately we are doing the right thing in scaling back the huge expenditure and ultimately its quite good to have a target to work towards, obviously if we can make it sooner without making any cuts which are too deep and too unnecessary then that’s good but we want growth and not to be ruthless; it needs to be a balanced approach. So as long as we can keep on going with a good sustained and efficient approach, ideally as quickly as possible; that’s good and if the economy can continue to grow then we might even beat our deadline. Is it better for your people to have jobs, a future as against not leaving them debt? Isn’t it better to leave them with a bit of debt but decent infrastructure, good jobs, affordable housing, realistic potential of getting a good job in the future?

Is that right? £12 billion of savings to be made in the welfare bill? Do you know where this is going to be? A number of things that they are being talked about; non-Britsih born people coming into this country having to work here before they claim benefits. Its not getting anywhere near £12 billion though is it? I haven’t seen the figures. I don’t think George Osborne knows though does he? Or does he know but he’s not telling us?

films. So for example, if you wanted to make a film about Neath you could say here is the amount of money it cost us to make it. It didn’t make much money and the government will refund you the tax relief. The problem is that people arte setting up films in order to create a loop hole. There was one 2010 Results example where a film Neath. UKIP apparently cost £25 million to make and when they polled 2% looked at the books, had an accountant to go through it and it had dog walking at £10,000 an hour and they clocked up something like that. It was all being off-set against tax so yes there is a lot of quite dodgy stuff like that and to clamp down on that is very good indeed. 5 billion pounds. Why haven’t they been doing it the last 5 years?

I don’t know. Going back to the figures, £5 billion pound crack down on tax evasion seems on the agenda? That’s a possibility yes because you will recall Russel Brand, he’s a part of something called film partnerships. It is a super aggressive form of tax evasion, where you claim that you set up a film and you get tax relief for setting up the film because the government wants to support UK

Well they have been, they have been stopping other sorts of tax evasion but there is clearly still a lot of work to be done. Tax is too complicated, it needs to be simplified and make it as fair as possible. Yes, they have done a lot over the last 5 years but I’m glad that they have seen that there is still more to do. Ja Sw Eat Fo! But when the sun shines, there are few better places in the city and the bridge is lovely in fairness. Who owns all these boats though? I’ve never met any of these people! Thai Elephant is a Thai restaurant that specialises in cooking elephants; the first bit of that sentence is correct in as much as the food is based on food from Thailand. The lay out is very much Eastern which you would expect. I was with a Vegi who is outraged at the demise of the Vietnamese in the Uplands; apparently it used to be amazing for those who refuse to enjoy a steak buts it’s gone seriously down hill.

I love the SA1 development when the sun shines. Having said that, I had only ever been to Garbos and Americano Jazz before deciding to do my least favourite part of my job and eat food for you all. So after a couple of beers in Garbos and Americano Jazz, I ventured across the road to Thai Elephant; I’d heard good things about it and forced myself to go there just for you avid readers. Parking really annoys me down that stretch. Are we at a stage now where we simply expect to have to pay to park? We design and build developments deliberately with no road parking with conveniently placed car parks charging us for the great privilege of pulling up our hand break? It really does annoy me that I have to illegally park in Sainsburys and walk all the way across the bridge just to spend money in the businesses which pay business rates to the council that designed this very road lay-out! It’s mental!!

The menu here was really good, really large variety of food. It wasn’t clear though whether rice came with a curry for example. I didn’t think that it did and I could only see the ‘special’ rice’ which were about £9 a pop, I wasn’t going to pay that! So vegi opted for ‘GANG GA-REE (YELLOW CURRY) ) Choice of meat cooked in yellow curry paste with coconut milk, bamboo, long bean, aubergines and sweet basil’ His choice of ‘meat’ was Tofu. With a

I really like Thai food, I like the different spices involved, I prefer a really good Thai meal to an Indian or a Chinese. I thought this was alright. Nothing that amazing in reality but good all the same. The noodles were more like tagiatelli which was different. The price was reasonable Vegi really enjoyed his food. This issues review comes from BRO’S in Port Talbot. I’ve been working a little closer to home the last week and fancied a change from Tambini’s in Margam so I ventured into unfamiliar territory of the breakfast kind and headed into the centre of Port Talbot. I’d done my research and was looking for Mandy’s breakfast roll van, the directions said just behind the train station but could I find it? NO! All I could see was a road and building work, however well signposted off the roundabout was BRO’S. Situated on the banks of one of the only few heated lakes in the world, was the busy BRO’S. It was about half ten and I was starving. I ordered the large all day breakfast, half and half with a coffee at the price of £5.90 and sat down at a table with my colleague. We chatted about the Swans and only a few minutes had past when a lady approached shouting “64”. A quick ticket check with my response “That’s us love, mines the large” saw us with our breakfasts. Brown source applied, I tucked into the fried potatoes dipping them into my egg as I go. At that point I thought ‘my opposite companion has 1 more sausage than me’, so I asked him “did you order extras?” At that moment the waitress came back with 2 more breakfasts shouting “64!”

Bless her she’d messed the order up and had brought me my large out! I can’t remember exactly what was on there, but there was plenty and it was all good apart from the sausages which where industry standard. To be fair it’s one of the best working breckies I’ve had, I even went back again the next day! Location 9 Price 7 Quality 7.5

P f Kid Towards the top of the Swansea valley, in the Brecon Beacons lays the Ancient Britton. A proper real ale pub and a top one for a bite to eat too. It lacks with both adults and children’s entertainment inside, if you are looking for a pool table and sky sports news then this isn’t for you but it has masses of room outside for the kids to run about in when the sun shines. I had faggots, peas, mash and gravy and it was probably the best I’ve ever had and there was change from seven quid. Kids meals were decent without being spectacular, the standard chicken nuggets and chips at the usual reasonable price. Drinks are outstanding. Generally a good place to take kids when the sun shines and you can eat outside, loads of pictures on walls and ornaments to break inside when the sun doesn’t.

96 Pn-es Pnn! We have all been there, (well those of us with kids) the football is on TV and we don’t get to watch hardly any of it as we are too busy entertaining the little monsters. I asked Claire from Munchkinos Childminding to try and come up with a solution. Numerous conversations with friends have ensured me that we are not the only household over run by odd socks. Where do they go? My theory is that they all run off to find their perfect match; either that or they are sent here to test our patience!!! My children love odd socks, luckily, but we still have more odd socks than we know what to do with. So with this in mind and the promise of summer sandals around the corner (I don’t care who you are socks and sandals are a NO, NO) I thought sock puppets could help. This was trialled in our house and kept the children entertained for over two hours. Preparation Gather all of the materials together and set up in the corner of the ‘ Match’ room. It’s a good idea to place a cloth underneath as it makes it easier for cleaning up afterwards. Depending on the age of your children you can add in needle and cotton for sewing on buttons, glue or for minimum mess just use sticky dots or sticky tape. You could make a puppet with your children first What you will need to give them Socks an idea of Buttons Sticky tape how to put it Scrap material altogether *These are just ideas, you can or just lay use any scrap materials that you have the materials out and see what they come up with. Method We placed all of the materials out on the table and let the children come up with their own ideas; they ended up working together and made a Frog, Robot, Dog and a Zebra. They decided to make up a play and had lots of fun performing it. Hope your children have as much fun as mine did with this activity. www.facebook.com/munchkinos
