Our Region’s Bright Future is Founded in a Rich History Written by Vicki Prichard

N

orthern Kentucky’s rich, colorful history ranges from prehistoric creatures whose fossilized remains are embedded in the stones and salt licks, to the courageous pioneers who floated down the Ohio on flatboats to settle the region. Wars were fought here, industries were developed, art created, and generations of people built their homes here and raised their families. Northern Kentucky’s many stories will be treasured and celebrated for generations to come. Begin your journey back in time here… There’s much history, heritage, and culture to discover in Northern Kentucky and one of the finest places to begin your exploration is at Behringer-Crawford Museum. Behringer-Crawford Museum in Covington’s Devou Park is dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of Northern Kentucky’s history and people, through four floors of well-curated exhibits. Step through its doors and you will see The Kentucky, the last streetcar to run through local towns, and an interactive, midcentury model train layout featuring area landmarks. Walk through the museum and you’ll stroll through history – the jawbone of a mastodon, the uniform of a Civil War soldier, steamboat artifacts, a drive-in movie. Northern Kentucky arts are also on display, with stained glass windows by Wolfgang Ritschel, woodcuts by Harlan Hubbard and paintings by Mary Bruce Sharon.

8 NKY RELO / 2019

Head outside for NaturePlay@BCM, a contained green space where children can play, run free and explore natural history. The museum also offers dozens of interactive programs, ranging from Tot Tuesdays! for preschoolers and parents to monthly Brown Bag Lunches featuring talks by local experts. In the summer, families and friends gather for the Music@BCM outdoor concert series. In the winter, it’s Holiday Traditions@BCM, featuring the museum’s beloved Holiday Toy Trains, Dickens Village and Wahoo’s Winter Wonderland. Where the mammoths and mastodons roamed Looking to walk through the region’s deep history? How about the Pleistocene era, when ice covered the ground from Canada down to the Ohio River? Then chart your course to Boone County’s Big Bone Lick State Park. So, what’s up with that name? Well, the salt lick deposited around the area is believed to have attracted herds of mammoths, mastodons, and ground sloths who relied on the salty earth for their diet. That salty marsh proved fatal for many of its prehistoric visitors, as animals became trapped and perished, leaving fascinating clues about the region’s prehistoric life. In fact, it’s recognized as the birthplace of American vertebrate paleontology. The park’s discovery trail, open from dawn to dusk, gives a glimpse into the events that unfolded in the most recent Ice Age. An afternoon drive to the 19th century Take a country drive and wind your way along Boone County’s Burlington Pike and step back into the 19th century and into the home of Julia Dinsmore.

She came to Kentucky as a child in 1839 when her father, moving his family from their Louisiana plantation, purchased 700 acres in the Belleview Bottoms area of Boone County. Original artifacts are located throughout the property, along with 90,000 pages of family-related documents. Visitors will find out what rural life was like in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Divided loyalties In 1861, as America careened into civil war, Northern Kentuckians – whether for or against preserving the Union – took their loyalties very seriously. The geography of war was never more evident – and the relationship nowhere more complex – than border regions like Northern Kentucky. Kenton and Campbell counties had strong ties to Cincinnati and a thriving industrial economy and were less immersed in the slave economy than other parts of Kentucky. The James A. Ramage Civil War Museum in Fort Wright is home to the history of the defense of Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati during the Civil War, telling the story of how the community came together to defend the region. Interestingly, the Civil War-era pontoon bridge across the Ohio River made the case for the value of a permanent bridge across the river. Before the war’s end, construction resumed on the John Roebling-designed suspension bridge. At 1, 750 feet, the Roebling Suspension Bridge from Covington to Cincinnati held the

distinction of being the longest suspension bridge in the world for 17 years, until another Roebling-designed structure – New York’s Brooklyn Bridge – was completed. History along the river’s edge By the mid-1800s, Covington and Newport were among the one hundred largest cities in America – the region’s population was booming. By 1870, more than one of every four people living in Kenton and Campbell counties were foreign-born. The cultural heritage of these immigrants would, in many ways, define Northern Kentucky for generations to come – through art, architecture, woodwork, and construction of area homes. The immigrants brought an unparalleled craftsmanship. During this time, many of Northern Kentucky’s large and elegant churches were constructed. Most impressive of all was Covington’s Saint Mary’s – known as the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. You can ‘bet’ on a fascinating history in Newport It’s no secret that illegal casinos once lined the streets of Newport. By the 1950’s, many enterprising and ‘criminal’ minds were finding new opportunities in Newport, once known as the “Sin City of the South.” Newport Gangster Tours allow you to explore the streets where mobsters made their money. Historic landmarks and districts throughout the city include the York Street National Register Historic District, Monmouth Street National Register Historic District, and the 1902 Beaux Arts Carnegie Library. In 2000, the city hung the Newport Peace Bell, which is one of 20 similar bells cast around the world to commemorate the start of the new century.

1) NKY’s river cities are perfect for a date or an evening with friends. Here are some ideas for a special night out. (photo by Liz Dufour) 2) Darkness Brewing, Bellevue’s rustic microbrewery, specializes in dark beer. Their taproom is a cozy, casual spot to sample their beer and cupcake pairings and forge a closer connection to the beer-making process. 3) For a casual dinner on the river, nothing compares to the Ludlow Bromley Yacht Club, a floating bar and restaurant that is a favorite of locals and passing boaters. (photo by by 5chw4r7z) 4) Float down the river as you sip wine on a sunset cruise with BB Riverboats. The cruise begins at the dock in Newport and includes a buffet dinner, live music, and a tasting of selections from a local winery. 5) Do axe throwing and beer drinking make a good combination? You bet they do! Grab your friends and come to Flying Axes in Covington and see who has the best aim. It’s a great time (and a lot safer than it sounds)! 6) Styled like a speakeasy, the 2nd floor Wiseguy Lounge in Covington’s MainStrasse Village offers a clubby atmosphere, comfortable seating, and bespoke cocktails.

7) Catch some amazing musicians at one of the river cities’ many venues for live music, including The Lodge in Dayton, Southgate House and Mansion Hill in Newport, Ludlow Tavern in Ludlow, and Dee Felice and Octave in Covington. (guitar photo by Nicole Honeywill, microphone photo by Israel Palacio) 8) Enjoy live theater inside a converted church. Newport’s Stained Glass Theater provides an unusual setting to watch local theater company, the Footlighters, perform new productions and old favorites. 9) Fuel up for a night of fun with a curated coffee experience in Newport. Carabello Coffee’s Analog Coffee Bar has six reserved seats where baristas present a seasonal menu of signature drinks, taste explorations, and brew methods with rare coffees. (photo provided) 10) Take a romantic stroll along the brick sidewalk in Covington’s historic Licking Riverside neighborhood and enjoy the city views, beautiful old houses, and collection of statues at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers. (photo by Jill Morenz) 11) Giving a nod to Newport’s racy history, Gangsters Dueling Piano Bar has an art deco theme with black and white grand pianos played by energetic musicians who put on a fun show and will even play requests. 12) Round out your evening with an ice cream cone or delicious piece of chocolate, all handmade in Schneider’s Sweet Shop’s Bellevue kitchen. BOONE COUNTY

Odds are, when you think of Kentucky, the landscape of Boone County is what comes to mind — winding waters, verdant stretches of land, and charming little towns and neighborhoods. But you’ll also find an area pulsing with vibrant national and international businesses, minor league sports — with professional sports just minutes away — and communities that range from a rustic little city along the river to sprawling family residences. Boone County’s location — along the Ohio River and in the Cincinnati Metropolitan Area — has made it a popular residential community, as well as a desirable location for national and international businesses.

Minding Our Many Businesses Major business industries have made Boone County their home. You’ll find primary industry companies that represent a broad scope of diversity in industry and innovation, such as advanced logistics, automotive, aviation & aerospace, financial services, food and flavoring, and life sciences. The region’s Advanced Manufacturing Workforce Development Coalition continues to develop an advanced manufacturing pipeline. Through initiatives like the Ignite Institute, What’s So Cool About Manufacturing, and Making it Real: Girls in Manufacturing, the region is dedicated to showcasing to students at the middle school and high school levels the opportunities that will be available to them in STEM and advanced manufacturing jobs, many which are right here in Boone County.

A Great Place to Raise & Teach Your Children The fourth largest county in Kentucky, in terms of population, Boone County is a great place to raise children. It offers great public schools and plenty of green space with more than 20 parks and preserves. Boone County Schools take pride in their mission of achieving excellence together, offering 14 elementary schools, six middle schools, and six high schools. Great Homes, Great Neighbors Boone County provides a diverse mix of growing urbanization surrounding the cities of Florence, Union, and Walton. Gentle, rolling fields throughout the county suit those seeking their own patch of green space in Kentucky. You’ll find a perfect place to call home in Boone County. According to the Boone County Planning Services GIS

Active Suburban List, in 2016 there were 5.270 single-family residences and 3,699 multifamily residences to be built. The Largest Airport in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Area Just minutes from downtown Cincinnati, Boone County is home to the Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), where its residents are mere minutes away from traveling to anywhere in the world. The airport, a hub for Delta Air Lines, DHL Aviation, and a focus city for Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines, is an economic driver for the entire region. CVG’s position as the fastestgrowing cargo airport in the US took another step forward with the announcement that Amazon’s $1.4 billion investment will support a fleet of 100+ Prime Air cargo planes. DHL’s $108 million expansion at its CVG cargo hub is already paying

dividends for the region, as it hires 900 additional employees, with projected growth in its shipments expected to increase DHL’s work-force to more than 3,300. Southwest Airline began offering 55 weekly flights with service to Baltimore/Washington and Chicago. From Here You Can be Anywhere in the World Thanks to CVG, you’re always just a flight from any destination in the world, but you’ll most likely find anything your heart desires just minutes away. Whether you’re looking for a family outing to watch the professional baseball team, Florence Freedom, knock one out of the ballpark, a night at races at Turfway Park, a visit to historic Rabbit Hash along the river, an afternoon at the historic Dinsmore Homestead in Burlington, or a spring morning on the links at one of the county’s golf courses, you’ll find plenty of cultural and recreational opportunities in Boone County.

CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS

Florence A comfortable, safe community for families, Florence is also a premier location for

businesses. The city boasts more than 2,500 businesses, from start-ups to retail, as well as national and international industry and a vibrant shopping district. The city even has a minor league baseball team, the Florence Freedom. Hebron Known as the home of CVG airport, Hebron has also attracted many of the region’s industries. Amazon’s Regional Fulfillment Center is located here, one of only 15 in the country. Hebron also offers charming suburban and rural neighborhoods to residents who appreciate its proximity to everything they need. Union Union is a desirable, attractive place to live and raise a family, as evidenced by its dramatic

population increase over the last three decades. The quiet residential neighborhoods offer homes with a median price of $244,300 and median household income of $98,438. An emphasis on “responsible development” of new homes and commercial spaces attract upscale housing and provide residents with a sense of identity. Walton For more than 160 years, Walton has been a popular place to live, work and play. This rural

community has a contemporary attitude, where serene country settings exist alongside the urban hustle of the nearby cities. Regional real estate costs thousands of dollars less than the national average and Walton real estate is among the most affordable in the Northern Kentucky region. Burlington You will find beautiful homes and charming local restaurants in Burlington, as well as

historic venues, such as the Dinsmore Homestead and family-friendly farms, like Kinman Farms. The Boone County fairgrounds are also in Burlington, hosting festivities throughout the year. Rabbit Hash A beloved and unique community along the banks of the Ohio River, Rabbit Hash is a major tourist attraction that looks much the same now as it did in the early 19th century. This small hamlet has long been known for its canine mayor. The entire town and its 33 adjoining acres and contiguous properties were designated by the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior as a National Register District, one of only two in Boone County.

CAMPBELL COUNTY Campbell County is where the Bluegrass meets the city skyline. A first-class location to work, live, learn, and play, you’ll find global connections, rich cultural heritage, outstanding educational institutions, vibrant entertainment, and an excellent environment for business and family.

A first-class location to work, live, learn and play with global connections and a rich cultural heritage.

Surrounded by rivers, home to Newport on the Levee, award-winning Main Streets, and a rich agricultural history, Campbell County has something for everyone — from Fortune 500 companies to vineyards and farmland. Venture into the rural regions of Campbell County and you’ll find one of the nation’s oldest wine regions. That’s right, before Napa Valley was known as America’s wine capital, roughly one-third of the national wine output was produced in Campbell County, and its share was 40 percent of Kentucky’s wine production. Today, modern wine producers are reinvigorating the industry in Campbell County at StoneBrook Winery, Camp Springs Vineyard, Seven Wells Winery, and Generation Hill Winery. In Kentucky, rolling landscapes make for farmlands and horseback riding. Families

can saddle up at equestrian venues such as Misty Ridge Farm, Saddle Lake Equestrian Center, Lazy K Ranch, and Stonebridge Stables. Marrying small town charm with a decidedly urban feel, Campbell County’s river cities along the Ohio River, offer a wide range of housing options. Whether you’re looking for an exquisitely crafted condo with Cincinnati skyline views, a 100 year-old home in Newport’s Historic District, or a brand new home with a small town ambiance and great schools, you will find what you’re looking for in Campbell County. Residents also benefit from a cost of living that is well below the national average. Northern Kentucky University is centrally located in Campbell County’s City Highland Heights community. The Commonwealth’s fastest developing institution of higher education, NKU has

more than 15,000 students and 2,400 faculty and staff. The institution has distinguished itself as a regional academic and community leader. The university has seen a strong capital investment, including the 2008 opening of its $37 million, 144,000 square foot student union building, a $60 million, 9,400-seat arena, and nationally recognized College of Informatics at Griffin Hall, a $52.8 million, 110,000 square foot facility. The campus is also home to the Salmon P. Chase College of Law, the largest law school in Kentucky with an enrollment of more than 500. And in 2018, the University of Kentucky partnered with NKU and St. Elizabeth Healthcare to open a regional medical school campus at NKU. Sportslovers, if you’re looking for top notch professional and collegiate sports in your backyard, you’ve come to the right place.

CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Alexandria Only 30 minutes from downtown Cincinnati and CVG Airport, Alexandria offers public and private schools, is minutes from Northern Kentucky University and an easy commute to the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, and Thomas More College. The city’s tagline, “Where the City Meets the Country,” speaks to its blend of urban convenience and quiet country living. Bellevue This quaint, walkable, vibrant, riverfront community across from downtown Cincinnati is home to more than 5,000 residents. Bellevue boasts a variety of attractive architecture that appeals to both millennials and empty-nesters. The city’s main street is lined with local businesses, retail, and culinary venues. Camp Springs Settled in the 1800’s by a group of German settlers from the Rhine River Valley, the buildings in Camp Springs feature German architecture, built from real limestone. These unique, and very desirable historic homes, were built into the hillsides, giving access from two levels. The homes were working-class houses built for and by people who made their living off the land. Camp Springs is also home to StoneBrook Winery and Camp Springs Winery.

Campbell County’s Highland Heights is home to the Northern Kentucky University Norse NCAA Division II program, where you can watch the two-time NCAA Champion Women’s Basketball team dominate in the state-of-the-art Bank of Kentucky Center. The multi-year NCAA Regional Champion Men’s Soccer team competes at its new $6.5 million stadium. Just minutes across the Ohio River there’s something for practically everyone: Cincinnati Reds baseball, NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals, NHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones, FC Cincinnati, Cincinnati’s professional soccer team, University of Cincinnati Bearcats, and the Xavier University Musketeers; you are also only an hour north of the University of Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington.

Cold Spring Located in northern Campbell County, Cold Spring is only minutes from Northern Kentucky University, and is home to the national headquarters of the veteran service organization, Disabled American Veterans. The city’s name refers to a cold stream which for many years served as the sole source of drinking water. The community was founded prior to 1800. Fort Thomas Located on the southern bank of the Ohio River, and the site of an 1890 Army post, Fort Thomas is the largest city in Campbell County and boasts one of the region’s finest independent public school districts; their three elementary schools and high school are consistently ranked among the top in the country. Downtown Fort Thomas is home to a business district that features local businesses, banks, and shops. Highland Heights Nestled in the region’s hills just seven miles south of Cincinnati, this quiet suburb got its start as a farm community in the 1920’s. Today, Highland Heights succeeds in maintaining its small-town feel with easy access to a vibrant metropolitan life, and is home to one of Kentucky’s fastest growing universities, Northern Kentucky University. Newport Situated at the confluence of the Ohio River and the Licking River, Newport features ease of access to Cincinnati and CVG Airport - but this city has so much to offer you might not want to leave. With many shopping and dining options, Newport is home to six National Register historic districts and one local historic district. Nine neighborhoods make up the city and neighborhood groups take great pride in them. Steeped in history, and particularly known for its 1940s and ‘50s gambling halls and Vegas-style nightclubs, today’s Newport is rich in development and redevelopment. Newport boasts many tourist destinations, including the Newport Aquarium, World Peace Bell, and Newport on the Levee. Southgate A vibrant and historic community of roughly 3,800 residents, Southgate is just a few miles from downtown Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University. Wilder A unique town with a mix of rural, suburban, and urban settings, Wilder has a growing business community, which features everything from heavy industrial to professional offices and commercial attractions. Downtown Cincinnati is only five minutes away from this suburb, which borders Northern Kentucky University. The city offers a range of housing styles and features one of the lowest property tax rates in Northern Kentucky.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Northern Kentucky! Campbell County has been my home, as well as where I’ve run my family business, for my entire life. We are a community of more than 90,000 of the hardest-working people you will ever know. More than that, within a few minutes’ drive of downtown Cincinnati, you will find active farmland and vineyards in the southern part of our county, a major institution of higher education—Northern Kentucky University—in the middle section of the county, and thriving urban areas dotted along the southern side of the Ohio River in our northernmost areas. This county, while close in proximity to all the amenities of the Cincinnati region, offers plenty to do for residents, business owners, and visitors alike. We are home to one of the newest members of the Craft Tour of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail— New Riff Distilling. You can take in a Norse basketball game at BB&T Arena at NKU or find yourself touring beautiful, historic homes in the East Row of Newport. Our county is home to headquarters and manufacturing operations of major regional and national businesses, and I am proud that we have several of the finest school districts in the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky right here. Please take advantage of all we have to offer. I assure you that Campbell County and Northern Kentucky will not disappoint. Welcome!

Urban Living NKY-Style!

All across the country, people are moving back into urban areas to take advantage of easy access to jobs, dining, shopping and entertainment. Northern Kentucky’s river cities are booming, thanks to the wide range of housing options and prices available. Whether you are just starting out, have a family or are heading into retirement, you are sure to find just what you want. Let’s explore urban living, NKY-style! Taken together, Northern Kentucky’s river cities of Ludlow, Covington, Newport, Bellevue and Dayton form a desirable destination for fans of urban living. Each city has easy access to Cincinnati and the rest of Kentucky, excellent walkability and lovely public spaces along the river. They all also have their own vibe, history, special qualities and amenities that make each city unique.

LUDLOW: CLASSIC AMERICANA MEETS CONTEMPORARY URBAN UPSWING In Ludlow, they say things in their town are “chill”. The pretty streets curve with the river and charming homes and businesses offer opportunities to enjoy this friendly town, while being only minutes away from downtown Cincinnati. A growing group of creative people are contributing their art, music and style (along with hand-crafted beer and spirits) to the eclectic feel of this family-friendly community. Ludlow celebrated its 150-year anniversary in 2014. Shortly after it was originally incorporated, the railroad came to town, bringing many new jobs and residents. The housing market boomed and many of the Victorian homes built at that time still stand today. In fact, Ludlow was Kenton’s County’s largest town until the 1950’s. From 1894-1917, Ludlow was home to a large amusement complex called the Ludlow Lagoon, which drew thousands of visitors each day. The history of both the Lagoon and rail created an attractive community full of lovely neighborhoods which have retained much of their original charm and provide a conveniently located home for 5,000 residents. The city is welcoming to newcomers and offers an independent school system, ample greenspace and beautiful properties. Ludlow also has a recently-built train viewing platform with panoramic views of the whole area.

COVINGTON: ICONIC ARCHITECTURE, VIBRANT ART, ENERGIZED COMMUNITY The Ascent and RiverCenter dominate Covington’s skyline and the Roebling bridges the river. Come a little further into Kentucky’s 5th largest city and you will discover a vibrant community full of worldclass public art, quirky shops, charming gardens and trails, historic architecture, and a foodie’s paradise. Rapidly becoming a hub for urban living, tech startups and creative entrepreneurs, Covington is the place to be. Its nineteen distinct neighborhoods each offer excellent walkability and a mix of historic and new homes, as well as great restaurants, bars and entertainment options. Covington has three main entertainment districts: the Central Business District (CBD) MainStrasse Village and Roebling Point. The CBD is busy during the day with local businesses, banks and offices and busy at night with hotel guests and residents enjoying the restaurants, bars and live music. MainStrasse Village is centered around Goebel Park, known for its Carroll Chimes Clock Tower and the live goats that live there to help control weeds. MainStrasse Village is a popular location for festivals and has a number of bars and restaurants, ranging from casual to upscale. The Roebling Point area is steps away from the iconic bridge and has a charming coffee/book shop and a weekly farmers market. The neighborhood’s restaurants are popular gathering spots before, during and after Reds and Bengals games.

On the riverfront, historic mansions, shady park and collection of statues overlooking the river invite visitors and residents to take a stroll down the pretty streets. NEWPORT: STORIED PAST, BRIGHT FUTURE Founded over 220 years ago, Newport is one of the region’s entertainment destinations, with festivals and events on the Purple People Bridge. Newport on the Levee’s attractions, such as the aquarium, nearby World Peace Bell and many family-friendly activities and dining options draw tourists and residents together to enjoy fun and city views. The wealth brought into the city in its racy past helped to create Newport’s many beautiful residential neighborhoods. The wellknown East Row is made up of stunning, restored 1880’s homes and tree-lined streets. Newport has both a distillery and a brewery, as well as many popular restaurants. There is also a large retail district to the southeast that offers shopping at many national stores. On the west side of the city, Newport’s eclectic downtown is centered on Monmouth Street and is home to many interesting shops and businesses, including a number of mixeduse buildings, which have commercial space at street level with residential space above. York Street is part of a recently designated historic district where many people are investing in home renovations. It is an up-and-coming neighborhood with the potential to rival East Row.

BELLEVUE: CHARM THAT NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE Enter Bellevue and experience old-time charm blended with contemporary sensibilities, where friends gather and children play along tree-shaded streets. The neighborhoods range from new townhomes and condos to beautifully preserved homes from the 1870’s to the 1950’s. Creativity and vision carry Bellevue forward. The local schools and parks are cherished and supported by the community with pride. At the heart of the city is the vibrant, historic Fairfield Avenue business district. It is a welcoming and picturesque destination to hang out, shop, eat or take in an event. Bellevue fosters a tangible sense of place. There are frequent community events that bring many of the almost 6,000 residents together, including the popular First Friday evenings. You’ll never feel like a stranger in Bellevue. DAYTON: BIG OPPORTUNITY WITH A SMALL-TOWN FEEL Dayton, a city of about 5,000 people, was created in 1867 when the communities of Jamestown and Brooklyn merged together. Dayton has a rich heritage and offers a diverse selection of housing options. Lovingly restored historic homes line 6th Avenue and neighboring

streets. Modern houses in the Grant Park development offer popular floor plans for families. The new mansions along the river have stunning views, as does the eclectic mix of homes and condos on the hill above the downtown area. Mixed-use buildings and apartments in a renovated school offer modestly-priced options and new, market-rate apartments are being constructed along the river. The Dayton School District has achieved the Kentucky Department of Education’s highest “Distinguished” rating, making Dayton popular for families with school-aged children. Dayton also offers residents several parks and playing fields. The riverfront Manhattan Harbour area has a busy yacht club and development plans for 29 acres of green space and walking paths. The recent “I 8 in Dayton” campaign helped to promote the city’s exciting mix of restaurants along Route 8. Dayton is also home to several recording studios, including SofaBurn Records and The Lodge, which has a 3,000 sft performance space that doubles as the region’s largest sound-proofed recording studio. There are many reasons to love urban living and many more to love it, NKY-style. Come explore the river cities!

KENTON COUNTY From its river cities to its quaint communities, Kenton County blends urban style with small town charm, and all just minutes away from both metropolitan amenities and verdant green landscapes. You might say, it’s the best of all worlds. The third most populous county in Kentucky, Kenton County has no shortage of outstanding schools, libraries, parks, excellent health care facilities, entertainment, dining, and shopping — all minutes away from an international airport, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG). Kenton’s urban river cities — Covington and Ludlow — are seeing a renaissance with exciting new businesses and families of all ages moving into homes that range from historic houses and mixed-use buildings to new condominiums. Venture a little farther south from these river cities and you’ll find suburban communities that are considered some of the finest to live and raise a family and are known for their outstanding schools. Hometown pride reigns supreme in these welcoming communities. 58 NKY RELO / 2019

CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Bromley The settlement of Bromley can be traced to the year 1784, when Prettyman Perry received a 2,000 acre land grant from the United States Government. Soon thereafter, the Perry family began constructing a home on the property. This home, called the Landmark, still stands today on Shelby Street. Bromley continues to be a small, tight-knit residential community. The churches and volunteer fire department draw the residents together and provide a strong sense of belonging and community pride. Covington There’s a reason northern Kentuckians #LovetheCov. Covington, Kenton’s vibrant river city, located at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers, across from Cincinnati, was founded in 1815. This river city is a destination unto itself for both businesses and residents. The city embraces and celebrates the economic, cultural and racial diversity of its residents and is experiencing a true renaissance that includes both new and historic housing opportunities, high-tech firms, creative businesses and the arts. Nineteen distinct neighborhoods make up Covington and range in population from several hundred to 10,000 people. Historic preservation is greatly valued in this city and you’ll find that many neighborhoods contain one of Covington’s 16 National Register Historic Districts.

The Hotel Covington, a $21.5 million transformation of the city’s old Coppin’s Department Store building, Braxton Brewing Company, and culinary venues in the city’s MainStrasse District, are but a few samplings of Covington’s nod to its past as it embraces an exciting future. city in Kenton County, with much to offer both residents and businesses. Fairview - located in southern Kenton County, primarily along state route 177, the city was incorporated in 1957 to avoid annexation by Covington. Its history is tied to the adjacent railroad, and the name “Fairview” was suggested by one of the residents. The city of Fairview is zoned agricultural and has a population of under 200. Fort Mitchell neighborhoods offer charm, as well as stunning parks, and an excellent recreation program. Residents believe in a strong sense of community, where people care about each other and their city, and it is a great place to raise a family. The city is home to several prominent businesses, including the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce headquarters. Fort Wright Named after Civil War hero Horatio Governor Wright and situated on a hillside in Northern Kentucky with scenic views of Cincinnati, Fort Wright has ready access to urban amenities while retaining suburban charm and warmth. Today, Ludlow is known not only for its close-knit neighborhoods and excellent independent school district, but also its increasingly vibrant business district along Elm Street, where you can find a growing number of retail and culinary venues. In

keeping with its history of the unusual, today Ludlow is home to Circus Mojo, a youth and adult circus arts program that allows its customers a chance to experience the thrill of walking the tightrope, juggling, and plate spinning, as well as Bircus Brewing Company, where the “surreal world of circus meets the love of beer.” The city’s charm appeals to millennials and empty nesters, who are settling into historic homes for both business and residence. Park Hills Nestled in the rolling hills of northern Kentucky, Park Hills is home to 3,000 people. Both of these institutions are known for strong academic programs, as well as athletic excellence. Frank Duveneck. The city has a volunteer fire department and ambulance service and Ryland Heights Elementary School, which is part of the Kenton County School system. “People ask me every day, ‘What in the world is going on in downtown Covington? You have an excitement there I haven’t seen in years.’ It’s true. Covington in 2018 is crackling with an energy throughout our urban core. Historic buildings are being transformed into luxury townhomes and upper-loft apartments. Sidewalks are increasingly busy with visitors walking to an expanding collection of unique restaurants and trendy bars, or lingering at streetscape tables. Cutting-edge employers are suddenly taking a second look. Out-of-town investors don’t want to be left out. Why? Because Covington suddenly has a cool vibe that entices people and businesses to move here. Our architecture, history, and walkability create an authentic sense of place. Our access to regional attractions and our quality of life are second to none. Our residents are welcoming. Look, if you want a cookie-cutter, strip-mall city, we’re not it. But if you’re intrigued by a place with an edgy feel, that brims with unique activities and shops, that embraces diversity and laughs with quirkiness, and that pursues smart-city approaches with a City Hall focused on customer service, come check us out.”

GRANT COUNTY

Grant County is Northern Kentucky’s southernmost county, located at the very top of the Bluegrass Region’s Golden Triangle, and just an hour drive from Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio.

In the rolling hills of Northern Kentucky’s southernmost county you’ll find historic sites, the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North, the Ark Encounter, a lifesize Noah’s Ark park featuring the largest wooden structure in the world, familyfriendly places to boat, fish, and golf, and plenty of venues to shop and eat. Home to more than 26,000 residents, Grant County is the ninth fastest growing county in the Commonwealth. Its schools are staffed with innovative and well-trained instructional teams, with 75 percent of the teachers possessing a master’s degree or higher. 66 NKY RELO / 2019

A county rich in natural beauty with lakes, streams, ridges and rolling hills, Grant County offers boundless cultural, educational, employment, and business opportunities. Residents and businesses enjoy the advantage of the convenience of transportation, with I-75 easily connecting them to marketplaces on all corners of the compass. Only a 30-minute drive from the CVG International Airport, Grant County offers not only quick access to anywhere in the world, but also to nationally ranked urban city services, marketplaces, entertainment, the Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland, professional sports and arts, in Cincinnati and Lexington. A community that takes great pride in its heritage, Grant County is a blend of a farming economy, safe schools, beautiful churches, and engaged and caring people.

CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Corinth The smallest of Grant County’s four incorporated areas, this charming rural enclave is a sweet slice of Americana, with a country store and other small businesses. In 1930, the Corinth basketball team not only won the Kentucky State Championship, but went to the national tournament in Chicago where its “fabulous five” starters took third place in the nation. Crittenden There’s a good chance that you’ve heard about the tiny little town of Crittendon because of one of its more famous — and favorite — residents. In 2001, Crittendon’s Rodger Bingham, a retired school teacher and farmer, became a beloved national figure when he appeared on television’s Survivor: The Australian Outback. Bingham was a solid representative of this small town that provides quiet living with easy proximity to metropolitan venues. Dry Ridge A friendly little city, Dry Ridge is home to the last stagecoach stop left standing in Kentucky, Sherman Tavern. The city is home to the I-75 Outlet Center, antique mall, the historic Hogan House Inn, and charming local businesses. Williamstown Home to the worldwide attraction, the Ark Encounter, Williamstown is quickly growing from a bedroom community to a destination for families and a vacation hub. The full-size Noah’s Ark, spanning 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high, is an engineering marvel. Visitors to the park explore Biblical history, fossil hunts, and zip lines. The park has spurred new hotels and restaurant development, but Williamstown is holding on to its small town charm. The city is home to excellent schools, a hospital, parks, Williamstown Lake, and ample recreational and cultural activities.

GALLATIN COUNTY

Small in size but big on hospitality, Gallatin County has transformed from quiet rural farmland to a vibrant growing community. It is nestled on the fertile banks of the Ohio River in Northern Kentucky in the “Golden Triangle,” of Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington. Its county tagline is “Little, but in the middle of it all.” This rural gem, which boasts, scenic waterways, picturesque country roads, quaint communities, and great schools, is not only a wonderful place to live, but a frequent destination for the region’s urban dwellers who seek Gallatin County’s bucolic setting along the river. Race car aficionados know Gallatin County as the Race Car Capital of the State, thanks to the Kentucky Speedway, located in Sparta. And if water sports are more your speed, you’ll feel right at home in Gallatin County where the Ohio River winds along its way and offers two river marinas for your boating pleasure.

Little, but in the middle of it all. CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Warsaw Situated on the banks of the Ohio River between Cincinnati, Lexington, and Louisville, Warsaw is also located between Kentucky Speedway and Belterra Casino. But Warsaw’s real appeal lies in its quiet, charming community — a Tom Sawyer-esque locale. Sparta The tiny town of Sparta began as a village named Brock’s Station back in 1802, and in the mid-1800’s it became a stop on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Today the CSX trains still run through the town, and so do some of racing world’s fastest drivers at Kentucky Speedway. This 1.5mile tri-oval speedway put this little town on the map, hosting ARCA, NASCAR, and Indy Racing League racing annually since it opened in 2000. Glencoe This sweet, little Kentucky town has a population of around 360 and you can find hometown goodness in local venues like the Exit 62 Truck Stop for family-style dining.

Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky Northern Kentucky is filled with people doing good work in service to our community. We are 400,000 strong, and our strength is in our connection to each other. As a community foundation, Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky is able to see this good work happen every single day, and we are grateful to be in a role that connects people to their community. Community foundations are uniquely situated to improve their regions through supporting innovative solutions and creating powerful partnerships. As grant-making public charities, they are dedicated to improving the lives of people in a defined local geographic area. Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky and the more than 795 other community foundations across the country help to bring donors and residents together. Community foundations work to support the efforts that will help the places we call home continue to flourish and grow. At Horizon Community Funds, our leadership is passionate about funding programs and projects that accelerate good work, show innovative strategies, and exhibit strength in leveraging existing resources and partners. Fortunately, Northern Kentucky 70 NKY RELO / 2019

is well-equipped for this with a community that cares, and with a robust nonprofit sector as our backbone. Northern Kentucky’s needs are as unique as the communities that exist within it, and as a community foundation, we are able to assess and respond in ways that bring impact and lasting change. Why participate in a community fund? Most of us have a desire to give back but want to do so in a meaningful way. Often we find ourselves confused about how to give and where – and question if it will truly make a difference. Investing through a community fund has substantial tax advantages while simultaneously providing a way for you to participate in larger scale projects to meet the social needs of the community and to change the future in a lasting way. By partnering with your local community foundation, you are making an investment in the future of your community. We like to say that community foundations are “here for good.” At Horizon Community Funds, we don’t think about the next election or business cycle, we think about the next generation and the next after that. Select the fund that’s right for you Horizon Community Funds has options for the full spectrum of donors, from those who want to give to a general community fund to those who want to choose what charities benefit from their gifts. Community Impact Fund: The Community Impact Fund connects our community to needs across the region, and uses collective giving as a way to break the cycle of poverty, support the arts, enhance education, and build a successful future for Northern Kentucky.

Nancy Grayson is the President of Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky, where Northern Kentuckians make a lasting difference in their own local community. She is a lifelong Kentuckian, and longtime Northern Kentucky resident. She currently resides in Boone County with her husband, Trey, and their two daughters, Alex and Kate

When you invest in our community fund, you are making a charitable gift that addresses the challenges of Northern Kentucky as they evolve, including needs that are not anticipated at the time the gift is made. Community funds are the most flexible type of fund, and they empower our council of trustees to apply their judgment in assessing our community’s needs and supporting our community’s most critical endeavors. Investing in community funds supports long-term solutions, rapid response to emergencies, and our collective ability to successfully navigate changing social, cultural, educational, and environmental needs. From young professionals to lifelong Northern Kentucky residents, the Community Impact Fund provides an opportunity for people to join together and help neighbors throughout Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties. No gift is too small to build a more vibrant community now and in the future. Donor Advised Funds: Donor advised funds give you ongoing involvement in the distribution of your charitable gifts. These are convenient and flexible tools for highly motivated people who are likely to be personally involved in philanthropy. This is a good option for donors that have a broad range of charitable interests, because once the fund is established, you can add to it at any time and make grants immediately or in the future. Unlike private family or corporate foundations, donor advised funds are often less costly, easier to administer and more flexible. The tax deduction takes place up front but you can still choose

your schedule for giving as your money grows tax-free. We can provide help and guidance at your request, drawing on both our knowledge and experience. Designated Funds: With a designated fund, you can directly give to one or more specific organizations and even select a specific purpose for use of the monies within the organization. This is a way to provide ongoing funding for social service agencies, arts organizations, educational institutions, or any other kind of public charity or qualified project. Once the recipient is selected, Horizon Community Funds executives manage the one-time or multi-year annual distribution of funds forever. Why give with Horizon Community Funds? At Horizon Community Funds, we care deeply about working to improve the quality of life in Northern Kentucky. We welcome the opportunity to discuss your goals for giving and develop a strategy to help you meet those goals. As specialists in local philanthropy, we can inform you about effective nonprofits, as well as key community needs and projects. We are here to support you in making strategic decisions that will ensure what you choose to give is maximized to create a positive impact in your community. I hope you’ll join us in recognizing our collective impact and the difference we can make together. We ask you to help us create an enduring legacy for Northern Kentucky. ARTS & MUSIC From Acoustic to Arena-Filled, Northern Kentucky’s Music Scene Offers Something for Everyone Whether you’re into quiet acoustic sets, Grammy-award winning artists, impromptu jam sessions, or listening to a live symphony while you sip your wine on a verdant hillside beneath a summer sky, the region’s music venues deliver. You’ll find a variety of music styles in venues like Newport’s Southgate House Revival and Thompson House, as well as Covington’s Madison Theater. Some of the top talents of the local music scene jam at the Nathan Chambers’ Wunderbar – where you can also get stellar pierogis, house-made sausages, and roasted vegetables. Kick back in Ludlow where Folk School Coffee Parlor becomes an intimate performance space for some of the region’s best songwriters and performers. If a symphony orchestra is more your style, you’ll find The Kentucky Symphony very satisfying, and if symphony orchestra isn’t your style, odds are this symphony will convince you otherwise. 74 NKY RELO / 2019

“The Kentucky Symphony began as the Northern Kentucky Symphony back in 1992 with the mission to make symphonic music and the concert experience attractive, accessible, and affordable for area residents,” says conductor J.R. Cassidy. “Twenty-seven seasons later, our professional orchestra presents three concert series each year.” The symphony offers a popular Free Summer Series in Covington’s Devou Park, a Free Education Series for area schools, an affordably-priced Subscription Series that runs from October through May, and an annual Bourbon Barrel Ball. The symphony also has several subsidiary groups which specialize in various genres of popular music – Newport Ragtime Band, Flood Wall Jazz Quintet, Covington Devou-Doo Daddies, and the KSO Bookie Band. “The KSO’s unique thematic programming – “Sweatin’ to the Symphony” and “Touched by an Angel” -- and U.S. regional premieres – 2Cellos, Disney’s Silly Symphonies, Amadeus Live – have differentiated the Northern Kentucky-based symphony from traditional orchestras across the nation,” Cassidy says. In Highland Heights, the BB&T Arena on the campus of Northern Kentucky University has featured award-winning headliners such as Blake Shelton, Alan Jackson, and Barry Manilow in its 10,000-seat, multi-purpose arena.

BREWERIES AND DISTILLERIES Northern Kentucky’s B-Line is a Gateway to Kentucky Bourbon It’s no secret that there are more barrels of bourbon in Kentucky than there are people – in fact, there are almost two barrels for every person living in the Commonwealth. Kentucky, the birthplace of bourbon, produces 95 percent of the world’s supply of the beloved amber spirit. As bourbon has spurred a sharp rise in tourism, visitors set out to sip along the scenic trails that highlight Kentucky’s $8.5 billion signature industry’s finest distilleries. The official Kentucky Bourbon Trail® winds its way through along some of Kentucky’s most stunning routes, while the Kentucky Bourbon Craft Trail Tour® features 13 micro-distilleries.

Boone County Distilling Company), five restaurants (Tousey House Tavern, Bouquet, The Purple Poulet, and Chandler’s on Market), and five bourbon bars (Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar, Wiseguy Lounge, The Globe, Newberry Bros. Coffee & Prohibition Bourbon Bar, and Bourbon Haus 1841). As Peter Newberry, who owns Newberry Bros. Coffee & Prohibition Bourbon Bar with his wife Kim Rorick Newberry, points out, bourbon has a deep history in the region, as it was at one time home to George Remus, “King of the Bootleggers,” who came to the area from Chicago because of the proximity of spirits. “Louisville is a big bourbon capital, but Cincinnati was huge,” says Newberry. “During prohibition, George Remus, a pharmacist [and lawyer] from Chicago, came to Cincinnati specifically because 90 percent of all bourbon barrels stored in this country were stored within 150 miles from Cincinnati. This was sort of the center of the bourbon industry, so it was a natural connection.”

Now, across the Ohio River – the original bourbon line – is northern Kentucky’s B-Line, a range of establishments that include, but go beyond, distilleries, highlighting northern Kentucky’s growing bourbon experience. One might consider the B-Line the gateway, from the north at least, to Kentucky bourbon. As a matter of fact, it was named an Official Gateway to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®.

The Newberry Bros. Coffee & Prohibition Bourbon Bar boasts status as housing the #1 largest bourbon selection in the world. The Newberrys were inspired to establish a bar with the largest bourbon selection after Peter read that the world’s largest bourbon bar was in Tokyo, Japan.

Comprised of 12 venues that weave through Maysville, Newport, Covington, Burlington, Independence, and Dayton, the B-Line includes three distilleries (New Riff, The Old Pogue Distillery, and

Charged with purchasing as much bourbon as he could to rightfully establish the bourbon bar with the largest selection, Peter succeeded and secured the highest honors for their Newport-based bourbon bar.

DINING Young creatives invest in Covington’s history and help steer its future With thoughtful commitment to preserve its history, and a keen sense of how to organically connect communities and professional sectors, the residents, business owners, and leaders in Northern Kentucky’s largest city have nurtured a city that increasingly appeals to young professionals, creatives, families, and empty nesters who are seeking an urban pulse with a neighborly feel. Charming neighborhoods, a vibrant art community, and an enviable culinary scene make Covington a wonderful place to live and work. Emily Wolff and her husband Paul Weckman decided Covington was the place for them when they left New York City. Wolff, who grew up nearby in Fort Mitchell, says she and her husband moved to New York after college, but a visit home convinced them that Covington was the place for them. “We thought we’d live in a big city,” says Wolff. “Paul and I lived in New York City for a short period and thought, ‘this is our home.’ Well, that didn’t work out. We go here in Northern Kentucky and we were able to find that same genuine energy of a city in Covington. It was affordable and we were drawn to the historic architecture.” 82 NKY RELO / 2019

Wolff and Weckman have lived in Covington for 15 years, during which time they started two of the city’s best-known restaurants — Otto’s and Frida — both in the city’s historic MainStrasse Village, and will soon open a third, also in MainStrasse. They also purchased a historic home where they now raise their five children. “I think 15 years ago that authenticity was there, and that’s what was so attractive about moving to Covington and a historic neighborhood,” says Wolff. “Our building had been occupied for years by families living there and running their own business out of the first floor, and when we were there we did that same thing. So, there was this longevity of the neighborhood that never dies, and it’s just continuing to be re-birthed through other creatives and entrepreneurs, so that was very attractive to us.” It wasn’t long before Wolff and Weckman brought some fresh energy to MainStrasse Village, which at the time was more of a bar district than dining scene. “I think, as a creative, it was very welcoming because people were excited about fresh ideas and seeing what you can do — that authenticity and original thinking — people were excited about it,” says Wolff. “They were very supportive, and like any young business, you fall down and get back up; they were there to cheer you on and say, “We’re going to help you out.” Wolff, who has served on the city’s preservation board for the last ten years, says she thinks the intact historic districts and Old-

World neighborhoods are a strong draw for people, impacting tourism and revenue. “People buy and put down roots and become part of that culture, so, not only is the architecture amazing, but you have an interest in protecting trees, and tree-lined streets; all of these things that are often taken for granted, Covington really has a focus on.” Much of Covington’s historic architecture can be credited to the quality craftsmanship of the region’s early immigrant artisans and builders. Wolff and Weckman purchased the old St. Aloysius Rectory in Covington. Fire destroyed the church in 1985 and the rectory sat vacant for that entire time because it suffered fire damage as well. “I took my mom in it and she cried and said, “You’re not raising my grandchildren here,”” says Wolff. “It was so bad and now it’s an amazing home. Each home here tells a story.” The Wolff/Weckman home has its original wood windows that are still functioning. “For me, as an artist and a designer, I love the Old-World craftsmanship — the people who took time to hand-build the facade designs and put thought into it,” says Wolff. “These buildings were made to last, years and years beyond now. It’s not a feeling of ‘let’s mass produce it and make the same thing.’ Each building has a quirky detail that makes it an identifier and creates creative placemaking within a community. I think that’s attractive.”

Since making Covington their home fifteen years ago, with their infant twin sons, Rowan and Adam, Wolff has seen her MainStrasse neighborhood attract more families. From a parental perspective, she says the quality of life is different from her childhood in the nearby suburbs. “We can walk to Reds games, walk to the library, great cultural center — the Carnegie and Baker-Hunt,” says Wolff. “with Red Bike and the trolley, we walk to the end of the street and get on the trolley and go downtown. We can go to the CAC [Contemporary Arts Center] or to the Banks. We’re very connected here.” Wolff says she thinks the walkability of the city has huge appeal for many, and points out that the connectivity is very creative. She had a particular hand in much of that creative connection. “The chandelier project I did in the underpass is quirky, but if we can use creative ideas, and the community’s behind that, then it just gives us a stronger sense of identity,” says Wolff, who add that the city has goats manicuring its Goebel Park. Wolff and Weckman led an effort to renovate the city’s Goebel Park playground at Sixth and Philadelphia streets, creating the organization, Make Goebel Great. The two have also acquired a number of properties which they are rehabbing. “That’s our day — we’ll go check on the goats, check one of our rehab projects, and get a slice of pizza. It feels good,” she says.

That family vibe in the neighborhood wan’t always there, but a lot has changed since the first Weckman children were the only kids in the village. “When we came here, Rowan and Adam were the only kids, there was like one other family in the village,” says Wolff. “Now, the village is so community friendly and that definitely happened in that 15-year span. Rowan and Adam are the oldest kids in the neighborhood now.” Wolff says Covington is attracting a wide range of residents. “What we’re seeing is entrepreneurs, even baby boomers who are retiring, but in creative fields their whole life, they’re saying, “I want to be part of this,” says Wolff. “There’s a tie to the past that makes you feel like your story’s important if you’re continuing on the story of the Covington neighborhood.” That diversity, says Wolff, has a healthy impact on the community culture. “A healthy neighborhood is diverse — economically, racially, and generationally — that’s why I think I love it here, because I think I’m raising my kids in this little community that is representative of our creative world,” says Wolff. “Not all communities have that. It’s normalizing things that some communities aren’t normalizing.” Perhaps one of the biggest draws to the village — certainly by way of visitors — is the innovative and vibrant culinary scene. 84 NKY RELO / 2019

When Wolff and Weckman opened their first restaurant, Otto’s, on Covington’s Main Street, she says their mindset was that they had to sell so many sandwiches so they could pay their bills. A lot has changed since then. “I think other people saw this idea and said, “We can do it,” so now we have these great restaurants in our community. She mentions restaurants such as Bouquet’s farm-to-table niche dining, and Commonwealth, with its innovative take on Kentucky classics, and Frida 602 — Wolff and Weckman’s second restaurant — which is doing a casual mezcal, low price point, high end menu. “You can check the box off and, technically, eat out every night if you wanted to,” says Wolff. Ultimately, Wolff says she would tell creatives that Covington is a place that has a support system. She points out that the city has great accelerators where creatives can bounce ideas off people and get great responses from a maker’s perspective. The affordability of places like Pike Street, she says, is attracting people who are purchasing studio space and getting exposure. “But there’s also this neighborly feeling of, ‘here’s my studio, and that’s so and so’s studio next door,’” she says. “They’re doing Pike Street Strolls now and getting people into these spaces, and when it happens organically, that’s where roots take hold.” For Wolff and her family, their roots are firmly planted in Covington, where they’ve all come to bloom.
