Inspirational Architecture From the gracefully twisting spine of the Ascent to homes built before the Civil War, Northern Kentucky’s architecture is impressive. The story of our buildings is the story of ourselves—our history, our daily lives and our aspirations.

By Jill Morenz

Hotel Covington is gaining international fame for exceptional comfort and service, as well as the creative use of interior space. At seven stories tall, it was Covington’s first skyscraper. It was built as Coppin’s Department Store, with dramatic high ceilings and hexagonal pillars on the first floor. The renovated lobby, bar and restaurant blend this original architecture with custom lighting, soft, vintage-looking fabrics and luxe faux fur. The vibe is elegant and sophisticated, while remaining comfortable and welcoming.

Newport realtor and remodeler Mark Ramler spent more than a year renovating an 1860’s home in the city’s East Row neighborhood. During the reconstruction, he found a mold for a Union soldier’s belt buckle tucked inside a wall. He marvels at the 24” wide joists used to make the attic floor. When they were removed to raise the ceiling, Ramler was able to repurpose the old wood as a custom island and stove hood. “I love walking around Newport and seeing the stamp I’ve put on so many of the houses here,” he said.

Downtown Covington has some significant buildings that have been restored in the past ten years. The 1921 Mutual Building was designed by Samuel Hannaford, who also designed Cincinnati’s Music Hall. Though it is in a prime location, it had been vacant for more than 20 years before it was renovated in 2014 as ground floor commercial space with 15 apartments on the upper floors. The beautiful exterior detailing and large arched windows harken back to a time when stone carvers were an essential part of a builder’s team. NKY RELO / 2022

In nearby Ludlow are several interesting homes built close to the river for wealthy owners in the mid-1800’s. An excellent example is Somerset Hall, a Greek Revival villa which boasts what is thought to be the longest residential porch in Kentucky. The servants used it to move between the different sections of the house without disturbing the owners.

Also in Ludlow is the unusual 12-sided “Latta House,” built in the early 1900’s. It was originally owned by the son of the inventor of the first practical steam-powered fire engine. On the contemporary end of the architectural spectrum is the stunning 22-story blue and white tower in Covington. The Ascent at Roebling’s Bridge was designed by Daniel Libeskind, who has said that the shape of the building was inspired by Kentucky’s rolling hills. He described the Ascent as “less a structure than a living, breathing piece of art that stirs the soul and lifts the spirit. It is a building that will inspire a region. It is a call to greatness.” As you walk the streets of Northern Kentucky, look up at the architecture that surrounds you. Each detail was included for a reason—decorative, functional or inspirational…perhaps even as a call to greatness.

BOONE COUNTY

Odds are, when you think of Kentucky, the landscape of Boone County is what comes to mind — winding waters, verdant stretches of land, and charming little towns and neighborhoods. But you’ll also find an area pulsing with vibrant national and international businesses, minor league sports — with professional sports just minutes away — and communities that range from a rustic little city along the river to sprawling family residences. Boone County’s location — along the Ohio River and in the Cincinnati Metropolitan Area — has made it a popular residential community, as well as a desirable location for national and international businesses. CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Florence A comfortable, safe community for families, Florence is also a premier location for businesses. The city boasts more than 2,500 businesses, from start-ups to retail, as well as national and international industry and a vibrant shopping district. The city even has a minor league baseball team, the Florence Y’alls. Hebron Known as the home of CVG airport, Hebron has also attracted many of the region’s industries. Amazon’s Regional Fulfillment Center is located here, one of only 15 in the country. Hebron also offers charming suburban and rural neighborhoods to residents who appreciate its proximity to everything they need. Union Union is a desirable, attractive place to live and raise a family, as evidenced by its dramatic population increase over the last three decades. The quiet residential neighborhoods offer homes with a median price of $244,300 and median household income of $98,438. An emphasis on “responsible development” of new homes and commercial spaces attract upscale housing and provide residents with a sense of identity. Walton For more than 160 years, Walton has been a popular place to live, work and play. This rural community has a contemporary attitude, where serene country settings exist alongside the urban hustle of the nearby cities. Regional real estate costs thousands of dollars less than the national average and Walton real estate is among the most affordable in the Northern Kentucky region.

Rabbit Hash A beloved and unique community along the banks of the Ohio River, Rabbit Hash is a major tourist attraction that looks much the same now as it did in the early 19th century. This small hamlet has long been known for its canine mayor. The entire town and its 33 adjoining acres and contiguous properties were designated by the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior as a National Register District, one of only two in Boone County.

CAMPBELL COUNTY

Campbell County is where the Bluegrass meets the city skyline. A first-class location to work, live, learn, and play, you’ll find global connections, rich cultural heritage, outstanding educational institutions, vibrant entertainment, and an excellent environment for business and family. CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Alexandria Only 30 minutes from downtown Cincinnati and CVG Airport, Alexandria offers public and private schools, is minutes from Northern Kentucky University and an easy commute to the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, and Thomas More College. The city’s tagline, “Where the City Meets the Country,” speaks to its blend of urban convenience and quiet country living. Bellevue This quaint, walkable, vibrant, riverfront community across from downtown Cincinnati is home to more than 5,000 residents. Bellevue boasts a variety of attractive architecture that appeals to both millennials and empty-nesters. The city’s main street is lined with local businesses, retail, and culinary venues. Camp Springs Settled in the 1800’s by a group of German settlers from the Rhine River Valley, the buildings in Camp Springs feature German architecture, constructed from local limestone. These unique, and very desirable historic homes, were built into the hillsides, giving access from two levels. Camp Springs is also home to StoneBrook Winery and Camp Springs Winery. Cold Spring Located in northern Campbell County, Cold Spring is only minutes from Northern Kentucky University, and is home to the national headquarters of the veteran service organization, Disabled American Veterans. The city’s name refers to a cold stream which for many years served as the sole source of drinking water. The community was founded prior to 1800. Fort Thomas Located on the southern bank of the Ohio River and the site of an 1890 Army post, Fort Thomas is the largest city in Campbell County. It boasts one of the region’s finest independent public school districts; their three elementary schools and high school are consistently ranked among the top in the country. Downtown Fort Thomas is home to a business district that features local businesses, banks, and shops. Highland Heights Nestled in the region’s hills just seven miles south of Cincinnati, this quiet suburb got its start as a farm community in the 1920’s. Today, Highland Heights succeeds in maintaining its small-town feel with easy access to a vibrant metropolitan life, and is home to one of Kentucky’s fastest growing universities, Northern Kentucky University.

22 NKY RELO / 2022

Newport Situated at the confluence of the Ohio River and the Licking River, Newport features ease of access to Cincinnati and CVG Airport but this city has so much to offer you might not want to leave. With many shopping and dining options, Newport is home to six National Register historic districts and one local historic district. Nine neighborhoods make up the city and neighborhood groups take great pride in them. Steeped in history, and particularly known for its 1940s and ‘50s gambling halls and Vegas-style nightclubs, today’s Newport is rich in development and redevelopment. Newport boasts many tourist destinations, including the Newport Aquarium, World Peace Bell, and Newport on the Levee. Southgate A vibrant and historic community of roughly 3,800 residents, Southgate is just a few miles from downtown Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University. Wilder A unique town with a mix of rural, suburban, and urban settings, Wilder has a growing business community, which features everything from heavy industrial to professional offices and commercial attractions. Downtown Cincinnati is only five minutes away from this suburb, which borders Northern Kentucky University. The city offers a range of housing styles and features one of the lowest property tax rates in Northern Kentucky. COUNTY INFORMATION UTILITIES Gas Duke Energy 139 E. BuildersNKY.com It is my pleasure to welcome you to Northern Kentucky! Campbell County has been my home, as well as where I’ve run my family business, for my entire life. We are a community of more than 90,000 of the hardest-working people you will ever know. More than that, within a few minutes’ drive of downtown Cincinnati, you will find active farmland and vineyards in the southern part of our county, a major institution of higher education—Northern Kentucky University—in the middle section of the county, and thriving urban areas dotted along the southern side of the Ohio River in our northernmost areas.

Housing Opportunities of Northern Kentucky (HONK) is a non-profit organization with 25 years of success in guiding families on the path to homeownership. HONK provides affordable homeownership opportunities through a lease-to-own program, offering faith, education, and support to lower income residents of Northern Kentucky. To apply for homeownership through HONK, please visit www.honkhomes.org/apply-for-housing

This county, while close in proximity to all the amenities of the Cincinnati region, offers plenty to do for residents, business owners, and visitors alike. We are home to one of the newest members of the Craft Tour of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail— New Riff Distilling. You can take in a Norse basketball game at BB&T Arena at NKU or find yourself touring beautiful, historic homes in the East Row of Newport. Our county is home to headquarters and manufacturing operations of major regional and national businesses, and I am proud that we have several of the finest school districts in the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky right here. Please take advantage of all we have to offer. I assure you that Campbell County and Northern Kentucky will not disappoint. Welcome!

KENTON COUNTY From its river cities to its quaint communities, Kenton County blends urban style with small town charm, and all just minutes away from both metropolitan amenities and verdant green landscapes. You might say, it’s the best of all worlds. CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Bromley The settlement of Bromley can be traced to the year 1784, when Prettyman Perry received a 2,000 acre land grant from the United States Government. Soon thereafter, the Perry family began constructing a home on the property. This home, called the Landmark, still stands today on Shelby Street. Bromley continues to be a small, tight-knit residential community. The churches and volunteer fire department draw the residents together and provide a strong sense of belonging and community pride. Covington There’s a reason northern Kentuckians #LovetheCov. Covington, Kenton’s vibrant river city, located at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers, across from Cincinnati, was founded in 1815. This river city is a destination unto itself for both businesses and residents. The city embraces and celebrates the economic, cultural and racial diversity of its residents and is experiencing a true renaissance that includes both new and historic housing opportunities, high-tech firms, creative businesses and the arts. Nineteen distinct neighborhoods make up Covington and range in population from several hundred to 10,000 people. Historic 28 NKY RELO / 2022

preservation is greatly valued in this city and you’ll find that many neighborhoods contain one of Covington’s 16 National Register Historic Districts. The Hotel Covington, a $21.5 million transformation of the city’s old Coppin’s Department Store building, Braxton Brewing Company, and culinary venues in the city’s MainStrasse Village, are but a few samplings of Covington’s nod to its past as it embraces an exciting future. Crescent Springs Conveniently located in the heart of the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region, surrounded by great neighbors and connected communities, Crescent Springs offers a wealth of amenities for residents, businesses and visitors. It boasts a diverse collection of schools, shopping, transportation, sports and entertainment. Although relatively small, the city offers much to with a wonderful mix of residential and commercial, from quiet suburban streets and high-rise office buildings to bustling shopping centers, along with a beautiful and relaxing city park with walking trails and highrise office buildings. Crestview Hills is home to the highly-rated private, Thomas More University, a multimillion dollar lifestyle shopping and dining destination, a range of single family homes and

condominiums, an extensive office park, and numerous recreational amenities. Crestview Hills routinely makes the list of top destinations for the region. Its Crestview Hills Towne Centre, features many national retailers. Founded and managed over the years with a keen vision for balancing growth and quality of life, Crestview Hills adeptly balances a robust tax base with high quality neighborhoods. Rarely can you find such a varied landscape in a city of this size. Edgewood is a comfortable, cozy, and affordable community with a population of 8,500. St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Health South Rehabilitation Hospitals are nestled within the city, providing opportunities for employment and the care of Northern Kentucky residents. Edgewood has a total of seven schools, K through 12, and a technical college to help guide and prepare students for life’s challenges. Its police, fire departments, and public works departments continue to strive to build a strong and united community. Elsmere What began as a small railroad community suddenly matured into a major suburb along the Old Lexington Pike. Elsmere is a full-service city with a seasoned and professional staff, providing 24/7 police protection and experienced public right-

of-way maintenance services, including street repair, snow removal, and street sweeping. Erlanger The City of Erlanger is located in the heart of the tri-state area which includes Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. This Northern Kentucky city is in the east-central region of the U.S. and is the third largest city in Kenton County, with much to offer both residents and businesses. Fairview - located in southern Kenton County, primarily along state route 177, the city was incorporated in 1957 to avoid annexation by Covington. Its history is tied to the adjacent railroad, and the name “Fairview” was suggested by one of the residents. The city of Fairview is zoned agricultural and has a population of under 200. Fort Mitchell neighborhoods offer charm, as well as stunning parks, and an excellent recreation program. Residents believe in a strong sense of community, where people care about each other and their city, and it is a great place to raise a family. The city is home to two Blue Ribbon National Schools of Excellence: Beechwood Independent, consistently one of the top public schools in the state, with grades K through 12, and Blessed

Sacrament, a parochial school with grades K thru 8. The city is home to several prominent businesses, including the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce headquarters. Fort Wright Named after Civil War hero Horatio Wright and situated on a hillside in Northern Kentucky with scenic views of Cincinnati, Fort Wright has ready access to urban amenities while retaining suburban charm and warmth. Independence The City of Independence is located in the “heart” of Kenton County. Independence is about 15 minutes south of Cincinnati and offers a lifestyle different from neighboring towns because of its urban amenities in a rural setting. Independence is one of the fastest growing cities in the Commonwealth and was recently ranked as the 99th fastest growing city in the nation. Lakeside Park Charm and convenience are among the hallmarks of Lakeside Park, Residents prize the friendly residential community atmosphere, the city’s outstanding police and fire protection, and the convenience of its location. Hospitals, great schools, interstate highways, the Greater Cincinnati International Airport, abundant shopping and dining locales are nearby. Covington, Cincinnati, Newport and Florence are all within a 10 minute drive. Ludlow Between 1894 and 1917, the little river city of Ludlow was home to the Ludlow Lagoon Amusement Park, a major recreational center for the Greater Cincinnati area, featuring a large lake with sandy beaches, a roller coaster over the water, a carousel with hand-carved wooden figures, and a miniature railroad ride. Today, Ludlow is known not only for its close-knit neighborhoods and excellent independent school district, but also its increasingly vibrant business district along Elm Street, where you can find

a growing number of retail and culinary venues. In keeping with its history of the unusual, today Ludlow is home to Circus Mojo, a youth and adult circus arts program that allows its customers a chance to experience the thrill of walking the tightrope, juggling, and plate spinning, as well as Bircus Brewing Company, where the “surreal world of circus meets the love of beer.” The city’s charm appeals to millennials and empty nesters, who are settling into historic homes for both business and residence. Park Hills Nestled in the rolling hills of northern Kentucky, Park Hills is home to 3,000 people. Residents and business owners enjoy the tranquility of the parklike setting, complemented by the proximity to downtown Covington and Cincinnati. With the added convenience of nearby shopping, sporting events, concerts, and more, Park Hills is truly a hidden gem. Park Hills is also home to two blue ribbonwinning private Catholic schools: Notre Dame Academy for girls, and Covington Catholic High School for boys. Both of these institutions are known for strong academic programs, as well as athletic excellence. Ryland Heights This small community is surrounded by a stunning countryside and panoramic view of the Licking River and nearby lakes. A group of businessmen from Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky opened what is now called Ryland Country Club. The name Little Switzerland was bestowed upon the private club by its well-known member, local artist Frank Duveneck. The city has a volunteer fire department and ambulance service and Ryland Heights Elementary School, which is part of the Kenton County School system. Taylor Mill is a friendly, vibrant community in Northern Kentucky with a small town feel and a big city focus. Taylor Mill is home to nearly 7,000 residents and a mix of businesses, including a new downtown/commercial

district. The city offers easy access to I-275, downtown Cincinnati and the airport. From its strong sense of community and quiet neighborhoods to its focus on building a thriving downtown and becoming more walkable, Taylor Mill is a city “Taylored with Pride.” Villa Hills A residential city in northern Kenton Co., Villa Hills is bordered by the Ohio River and Bromley on the north, by Erlanger and Boone Co. on the west, and by Crescent Springs on the south and east. Villa Hills reflects the history of the farmers who worked the land, the Benedictine sisters who established a monastery, and the young families who worked together to build the city. Walton For more than 160 years, Walton has been a popular place to live, work and play. A rural community with a modern attitude, Walton’s serene country scenes co-exist with the urban hustle of the cities and towns nearby. Walton offers the perfect location for those seeking major metropolitan advantages and excellent economic incentives.

Covington is determined to emerge from these difficult times not shell-shocked and shattered but poised for exciting growth. In 2020 alone, we announced 2,100 new jobs and $85.6 million in private investment. We have a blank 23-acre canvas downtown waiting to be filled in. We’re revamping our riverfront. We’ve recently attracted seven headquarters/“core sites.” And we’re adding apartments, condos, new homes, and in-fill housing throughout our 19 neighborhoods. Companies who move here tell us that their leaders and employees have fallen in love with the quality of life in Covington. Why does everybody #LoveTheCov?

GRANT COUNTY

Grant County is Northern Kentucky’s southernmost county, located at the very top of the Bluegrass Region’s “Golden Triangle,” and just an hour drive from Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio. Corinth The smallest of Grant County’s four incorporated areas, this charming rural enclave is a sweet slice of Americana, with a country store and other small businesses. In 1930, the Corinth basketball team not only won the Kentucky State Championship, but went to the national tournament in Chicago where its “fabulous five” starters took third place in the nation. Crittenden There’s a good chance that you’ve heard about the tiny little town of Crittendon because of one of its more famous — and favorite — residents. In 2001, Crittendon’s Rodger Bingham, a retired school teacher and farmer, became a beloved national figure when he appeared on television’s Survivor: The Australian Outback. Bingham was a solid representative of this small town that provides quiet living with easy proximity to metropolitan venues. Dry Ridge A friendly little city, Dry Ridge is home to the last stagecoach stop left standing in Kentucky, Sherman Tavern. You will also find the I-75 Outlet Center, an antique mall, the historic Hogan House Inn, and charming local businesses. Williamstown Home to the worldwide attraction, the Ark Encounter, Williamstown is quickly growing from a bedroom community to a destination for families and vacation hub. The full-size Noah’s Ark, spanning 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high, is an engineering marvel. Visitors to the park explore biblical history, fossil hunts, and zip lines. The park has spurred new hotel and restaurant development, but Williamstown is holding on to its small town charm. The city also has excellent schools, a hospital, parks, Williamstown Lake, and ample recreational and cultural activities.

GALLATIN COUNTY

Small in size but big on hospitality, Gallatin County has transformed from quiet, rural farmland to a vibrant growing community. It is nestled on the fertile banks of the Ohio River in Northern Kentucky in the “Golden Triangle,” of Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington. Its county tagline is “Little, but in the middle of it all.” Warsaw Situated on the banks of the Ohio River between Cincinnati, Lexington, and Louisville, Warsaw is also located between Kentucky Speedway and Belterra Casino. But Warsaw’s real appeal lies in its quiet, charming community — a Tom Sawyer-esque locale. Sparta The tiny town of Sparta began as a village named Brock’s Station back in 1802, and in the mid-1800’s it became a stop on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Today the CSX trains still run through the town, and so do some of the racing world’s fastest drivers at Kentucky Speedway (currently closed). This 1.5-mile tri-oval speedway put this little town on the map, hosting ARCA, NASCAR, and Indy Racing League each year. Glencoe This sweet, little Kentucky town has a population of around 360 and you can find hometown goodness in local venues like the Exit 62 Truck Stop for family-style dining. Quirky Kentucky

By Jill Morenz

Northern Kentucky has a robust selection of well-known restaurants, national stores and large shopping centers. If you march to the beat of your own drummer, though, you may be yearning for something a little unusual, a bit out-of-the-way. You might want quirky…and we have it! We’ve created a guide of our favorite quirky stores, bars, restaurants and things to do. When you visit these places, you’ll meet fellow fans of the offbeat. Tell ‘em we said hi!

Bircus Brewing Company Photo by Kathy Kuhn Drinking • Second Sight Spirits 301 Elm St., Ludlow, KY This distillery’s tap room is filled with clever details and references to old-time swamis, including a fortune-telling fish, the “luckiest bar in the world” and a giant, ride-on handlebar mustache. • Wiseguy Lounge 603 Main St., Covington, KY Designed like a speakeasy, the Wiseguys bartenders dress in 1920’s formalwear and shake up creative cocktails just for you. • Bircus Brewing Co. 322 Elm St., Ludlow, KY When a former Ringling Bros. clown opens a brewery, you get Bircus—a fun-loving place where you can sip craft beer and watch jugglers, acrobats and aerialists perform in the “big top.” • Darkness Brewing 224 Fairfield Ave., Bellevue, KY Tiny yet welcoming, the Darkness taproom serves their unusual craft beer flavors, while the Darkness food truck just outside offers tasty treats and a beer-centric Sunday brunch.

• Hierophany & Hedge 19 W. Pike St, Covington, KY Everything for the serious magic user or the casually curious: handmade wands, candles, potion ingredients, books and crystals, all beautifully displayed.

Treats • Moonrise donuts 3718 Winston Ave., Covington, KY You don’t have to wake up early for these fresh donuts. They open in the evenings and close when they run out. • Chako Bakery & Café 611 Main St., Covington, KY Bread, pastries and lunch entrees made with fresh local produce and unique Japanese ingredients. Try the bright green matcha roll cake. • Eishaus 117 Park Place, Covington, KY Inspired by a German favorite, Eishaus serves Spaghetti Eis, a photogenic (and delicious) concoction of ice cream, fruit and chocolate. Trust us.

Rabbit Hash General Store Photo by Kathy Kuhn • Rabbit Hash General Store 10021 Lower River Rd., Rabbit Hash, KY When you need sundries, notions or potions, you need to drive to Rabbit Hash. This tiny town is known for having a canine mayor and a General Store that has been in operation since 1831. • Earth to Kentucky 836 Main St., Covington, KY Part toy store, part art gallery and part roadside attraction, plan a visit to this colorful, lighthearted shop. • Tuscarora Moon 724 Monmouth St., Newport, KY Specializing in metaphysical supplies, Native American crafts and psychic readings. • Tessori: Vintage Home, Fine Art & Antiques 925 Monmouth St., Newport, KY A treasure hunter’s delight.

AmerAsia’s Outdoor Dining Area Photo by Kathy Kuhn Things to do • Vent Haven Museum 33 W. Maple Ave., Ft. Mitchell, KY What could be cooler than entire rooms filled with ventriloquist dummies? Nothing. • Behringer-Crawford Museum 1600 Montague Rd., Covington, KY From the weird (a taxidermy two-headed calf) to the beautiful (art by famed Harlan Hubbard), this museum traces regional history with interactive exhibits for kids and adults. • Newport Gangster Tour 56 E. 5th St., Newport, KY The personable guides will immerse you in a thrilling chapter of Newport history. • Purrfect Day Cat Café 25 W. 8th St., Covington, KY Grab a bite to eat and book some playtime with the adoptable kitties that reside at Purrfect Day. • Jane’s Saddlebag 13989 Ryle Rd., Union A fun mix of history and nature, Jane’s Saddlebag is located near Big Bone Lick State Park. Dining • York Street Café 738 York St., Newport, KY There is so much to look at in this restaurant that you could be excused from talking to your dinner companions. The food is really good too! • AmerAsia 521 Madison Ave., Covington, KY Specializing in “kung food,” AmerAsia leans into its pop culture movie theme with menu items like Fly Rice, Kung Pow and Brocco-Lee. Another fun feature: the glass-topped tables are adorned with countless cookie fortunes—you truly can choose your own fate! • Galactic Fried Chicken 624 6th Ave., Dayton, KY Styled like a cross between a 1950’s diner and a 1970’s spacethemed rec room, this “out of this world” chicken place serves a simple menu, focused on their gluten-free fried chicken. They also have a liquor license. #yesplease • Bard’s Burgers & Chili 3620 Decoursey Ave., Covington, KY Juicy, messy and delicious, Bard’s burgers are worth the trip. The diner-like atmosphere is no-frills—what more do you need besides a stack of napkins, anyway?
