Féile 2022

Page 1

Welcome to the 30th anniversary edition of Féile. It is hard to believe that it is now 30 years since a group of community activists had the vision of holding a one-day festival on the then vacant Gasyard site on Lecky Road, a positive celebration of the Bogside & Brandywell neighbourhoods. The activists’ vision and those first Féiles were the catalyst for much of the regeneration that has taken place across these areas. The main objective of Féile remains the same 30 years after the first Gasyard Wall Féile in 1993 – to celebrate everything that is great about these neighbourhoods where we live, learn, play, work, and visit. Every year since 1993, residents, community groups and arts organisations and the country’s leading artists and thinkers have continued to come together every summer to shape and manage the Féile programme which is now established as the biggest community arts festival in the Northwest of Ireland.

FÉILE 2022

FÉILE 2022

Féile 2022 will be our first in-person festival since 2019. as we get back outside and come together again on the streets and in the venues, community centres and open spaces across the Bogside, Brandywell, Creggan Fountain, Bishop Street and Derry City centre. While much of this year’s programme will be celebratory in nature, Féile 2022 will continue to provide a platform to discuss and debate the issues of the day including the cost of living crisis, human rights, the legacy of the conflict and the reunification of Ireland. Féile 2022 has a packed programme of events with something for everyone ranging in form from music, literature, film, sport, history, comedy, art, carnival, fun days, health, discussions, tours and much more. We look forward to you joining us at Féile 2022 from 13th – 20th August 2022.

Gerd Janson Celtronic presents

(Running Back - Frankfurt)

Saturday 13th August: 10.00pm - late The Nerve Centre, Magazine St

Ireland’s leading electronic music festival, Celtronic and Féile team up for an unmissable summer dance headlined by Gerd Janson, one of the most highly respected DJs in the world of house and techno. Quite often, “highly respected” goes hand-in-hand with “underrated” but over the past few years, audiences around the world have also found out what insider types already knew: Janson is a DJ that reconfigures the classics you already knew in an unexpected way – and introduce you to new classics, a few months (or years) before you’ll hear them played everywhere else. In short, Gerd Janson is one of the increasingly worst kept secrets in the world of dance music. A DJ versatile enough to rock just about any dance floor. A DJ who cares about the profession of DJ. A DJ worth hearing. Advance tickets at eventbrite.com.

United Nation: The Case for Integrating Ireland

Pilots Row, Rossville Street ................................................................................................. Freya McClements, Northern Editor of The Irish Times in conversation with Frank Connolly about his new book, ‘United Nation: The Case for Integrating Ireland.’ One hundred years after the Anglo-Irish Treaty and partition, after 30 years of Troubles, the Good Friday Agreement and Brexit, the debate on Irish unity has intensified. But what could a united Ireland look like, and what would it mean for those both north and south of the border? In this meticulously researched book, Frank Connolly interviews people from all sides, and presents his conclusions as to how and whether a united Ireland could create a viable, vibrant new country. United Nation is a timely look at the possibility of an integrated and united Ireland.

Peace Barriers Project present The Human Library

Holywell Trust, Bishop Street ................................................................................................. The Human Library is essentially a library of people. At Human Library events, ‘readers’ can borrow human beings serving as open books and have conversations they would not normally have access to. During the event, ‘readers’ will have a certain segment of time with each ‘book’ in which they can listen to the story and then ask questions in a safe and non-judgemental space. Every human book from the bookshelf represents a group in our society that is often subjected to prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of some experience, belief, life choice, past etc. A small number of local ‘books’ brought together by the North West Community Network (NWCN) will join us in Holywell Trust during Féile. Come along, put on someone else’s shoes, view life from a different angle, and/or ‘unjudge someone’ Register Here Wednesday 17th August - 1.00pm Céadaoin 17ú Lúnasa

This is an Irish language event with a simultaneous English translation.

Ballots, Bombs and Bullets’ Pat Bradley in conversation with Paul McFadden

Pilots Row, Rossville Street ................................................................................................. Ballots, Bombs and Bullets tells the story of how Pat Bradley - someone with no background and very little training in electoral law and process - found himself in charge of delivering democracy throughout the conflict, and becoming a recognised world expert in the process. A series of key elections for the future of the north of Ireland took place during his time in office – from the election of the Hunger Striker Bobby Sands in 1981, to the Forum elections in 1996 and the Good Friday Agreement referendum in 1998. In later years, Pat Bradley became highly sought after by international organisations like the United Nations and European Union in their attempts to introduce or enhance democracy in areas of conflict and/or emerging democracies around the world.

Professor Colin Harvey: Where Now for Human Rights?

Pilots Row, Rossville Street ................................................................................................. Colin Harvey is Professor of Human Rights Law in the School of Law, Queen’s University Belfast, a Fellow of the Senator George J Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice, and an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Irish Studies. In this seminar Professor Colin Harvey will reflect on the current state of human rights in the North. As recent attempts to revive the Bill of Rights process have once again resulted in a familiar stalemate, and as the British Government continues to undermine human rights guarantees, it is a good time to consider next steps and possible ways forward. The 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement in 2023 provides an opportunity to ask a basic question: Have the human rights promises of the peace process been delivered?
