BUSINESS INFLUENCERS

DATA DOCTORS Julie Pastrick, President & CEO, Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce is proud to showcase Ken Colburn, President, Data Doctors. When it comes to cyber security and tech needs, Ken is a great Data Doctor resource. Technology has impacted virtually every aspect of our lives. The proliferation of tiny sensors that can be integrated into just about any physical item is expected to exponentially increase the number of devices that an average home or business uses. An often-overlooked impact of the desire for the latest and greatest is the environment. Anything that uses batteries or plugs in for power can contain toxic materials that range from lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, mercury, brominated flame-retardants or polychlorinated biphenyls. The world is now discarding around 50 million tons of electronic waste (e-waste) per year, which is more in weight then all of the commercial aircraft ever made! It’s the fastest growing municipal waste sector in the U.S. Here’s the biggest problem – 80% to 85% of e-waste is improperly discarded and usually ends up in our landfills which can contaminate ground water or in incinerators where the hazardous chemicals can become airborne. What We Can All Do Did you know that it takes over 500 lbs. of fossil fuel, almost 50 lbs. of harsh chemicals and 1.5 tons of water just to create one computer and display? This makes it easy to see why upgrading an older computer rather than replacing it helps the environment. Even if you can’t find a use for it, donating it to a charity or shelter before it becomes useless to anyone else helps. The same goes for your old tablets and smartphones; just because it’s not good enough for you anymore doesn’t mean that someone else can’t benefit from it. (Hint: don’t let your old technology sit in a closet or drawer for years before you decide to get rid of it)! Year Round Recycling Drop Off Data Doctors is celebrating 30 years of helping people with their technology: A community service initiative we adopted over a decade ago leading the way in providing an easy way for people to responsibly dispose of their old technology. Our long-standing partnership with Westech Recyclers, which is a certified electronics recycler, allows us to serve as a drop-off location in Flagstaff for all of Northern Arizona. Unlike many other organizations that only offer the ability to drop off e-waste

once or twice a year, Data Doctors will accept any qualifying technology (http://bit.ly/2Gq8KLK ) to be dropped off at our store 6 days a week. If your organization has a large number of electronics that they wish to dispose of, please call us at (928) 214-7444 before dropping off, so we can coordinate a pickup with Westech. In the first 6 months of 2019, Data Doctors has been able to assist Westech in recycling over 50,000 lbs. of e-waste and we want to continue to increase our contribution with your help. Data Security One of the reasons that both individuals and businesses cite for not getting rid of their old technology is that they are concerned about the data that remains on the devices. Data Doctors and Westech both offer free assistance if this is a concern for you. At our stores, our staff can make sure your smartphones and tablets have been reset to factory settings to ensure no personal data remains. If you want to donate a computer but want to retain the hard drive, once again, Data Doctors will remove the data storage device and give it back to you while you wait at no charge. If your organization requires certified destruction, Westech can, for a fee, provide NIST 800-88 compliant destruction or you can schedule mobile hard drive shedding service at your site.

Advancing a Strong Community

Dr. Colleen A. Smith, President, Coconino Community College, has worked in her industry for 38 years. A passionate advocate for community education, Dr. Smith loves living in northern Arizona and is inspired every day by Coconino Community College faculty, staff, and students, who she says give her the best motivation she could ever have.

DR. COLLEEN A. SMITH

PRESIDENT/ COCONINO COMMUNITY COLLEGE

2800 S. Lone Tree Road Flagstaff, AZ 86005 | (928) 527-1222

WHY ARE YOU IN YOUR BUSINESS OR PROFESSION?

that the Community College is integral to the fabric of the community.

Because I believe so strongly in the mission of the two-year college and the emphasis on community, service, and continued learning for life.

TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS?

HOW LONG HAS YOUR COMPANY BEEN IN BUSINESS OR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS PROFESSION?

Worse than failure is not taking on a challenge or giving your best every day because of fear.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?

Enjoying Northern Arizona—this amazing place we call home. That means appreciating the wonderful people, the diverse cultures, and the beautiful surroundings this place has to offer.

CCC was formed in 1991 and has been in business 28 years. I have worked in community colleges for 38 years.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME, WOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR PROFESSIONAL PATH? IF SO, HOW?

Our students- when you see them overcome challenges, work hard, and succeed, it is absolutely the most inspiring motivation you can have. I’m also inspired by the dedicated faculty and staff that choose to work at community colleges and give so much of themselves to our students.

FROM WHOM DO YOU SEEK BUSINESS ADVICE? Colleagues and mentors in higher education.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN YOUR PROFESSION? Listen and learn from everyone, be true to yourself, and always serve with integrity and compassion.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL BRAND? PLEASE EXPLAIN. My role is to be an ambassador and an advocate for education with an emphasis on community. In my daily work, it is important that I am 100% engaged in demonstrating

WHAT IS WORSE THAN FAILURE?

A strong work ethic, taught by my parents, that values education and a wonderfully supportive husband who is truly my partner in life.

Spend time with family and friends, read, write, and enjoy the outdoors.

No- absolutely not! I have learned so much from working with students, faculty, staff, public officials, and community members at four different community colleges where I have served that I would not change a thing.

of yourself by showing compassion. My husband and I have a shared mission in life— to create and contribute with compassion.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO BE IN 10 YEARS?

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE AND STAY IN FLAGSTAFF? I came to Flagstaff because of Coconino Community College, and all that it has to offer. I found that Northern Arizona is filled with people who value service to others and who have been very warm and welcoming to my husband and to me. It is all about the people—that is why I want to stay in Flagstaff.

WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU TODAY THAN IT WAS 10 YEARS AGO? Every minute I get to spend with loved ones.

WHAT MANTRA OR RULE DO YOU STRIVE TO LIVE BY? Always assume that people have good intentions and are acting with integrity. You may, at times, find that not to be true, but always expect the best of others and

MUSEUM OF NORTHERN ARIZONA Chamber Introduces MNA Executive Director Mary Kershaw Mary Kershaw, the new Executive Director of the Museum of Northern Arizona, arrived just in time for the museum’s busy summer season, packed with cultural festivals, live music performances on Thursday evening, and the Gala fundraiser.

across disciplines,” said Kershaw, who oversaw diverse museum institutions in the United Kingdom. At different times she was responsible for a medieval abbey, a historic observatory, an 11th century hermit’s cave and a 12th century castle. Compared to those the oldest building at the Museum of Northern Arizona, the 134-year-old McMillan Homestead, is practically new.

She is taking every opportunity to meet community members and talk with museum supporters. “These initial conversations are so helpful in understanding the aspirations and potential of a museum. It is important to go beyond conversation and create opportunities for broad involvement, too,” said Kershaw. “The museum has a great reputation, so we are building from a position of strength. I look forward to exploring new partnerships for the museum, both within Flagstaff, across the Southwest, and possibly beyond." A seasoned museum professional, Kershaw came to MNA from the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, where she was Director for nine years. During her tenure in Santa Fe, the museum celebrated its Centennial and launched a $12.5 million capital campaign for a new art venue. The Museum of Northern Arizona is also counting down toward its 100th year. “In my view, the centennial is a time to look back at the origins of the museum and to understand what energy, creativity and innovation led to the foundation of the museum 100 years ago,” said Kershaw. “As we move into the next century, how can those founding values be relevant to our museum and our communities today?" Kershaw also appreciates that the museum founders had the foresight to combine science, culture and art in a single institution, building diverse collections spanning geology, paleontology, archaeology, botany, zoology, fine art and more. “I love working with a range of collections, and seeing what creative connections and conversations emerge from working

HAVEN OF FLAGSTAFF Congratulations to Haven Health's Nancy Emerick Haven Health is known throughout rural Arizona as the respected provider of choice of skilled nursing and rehabilitation. While there are many intentional and deliberate efforts that have established that reputation, there is one undeniable influence that has made it all possible—its people. Nancy Emerick, Executive Director of Haven of Flagstaff and Flagstaff resident, was recently honored and presented the Executive Leadership award by the Arizona Health Care Association in its 2019 annual conference in Scottsdale. Emerick has been a part of Haven Health since 2013 just before the location in Flagstaff underwent a full-scale multimillion-dollar renovation. Emerick has been a caring professional for more than 20 years in several roles throughout the country. At Haven Health, Emerick leads a team of 115 dedicated caregivers in various capacities. But it’s not just the professional experience at work here.

Haven Health’s employees have been essential in achieving superior patient care. While every accolade Emerick has earned is well-deserved and merited, Haven Health honors her and those who she leads for something no award could adequately recognize—their genuine goodness, human kindness and care for each other and for the people they serve. Haven Health is proud they have chosen to be a part of the skilled nursing provider and employer of choice in Flagstaff.

The skilled nursing and rehabilitation center is home to nearly 83 residents and treats more than 400 short-term stay residents each year. Haven Health has consistently been rated a Five Star Facility by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid services under Emerick’s leadership. The patient outcomes achieved in Flagstaff are the cumulative effort of Emerick’s tenured experience blended with the complete dedication of every member of the care team. BUSINESS ADVOCACY Coconino County & City of Flagstaff Simultaneously Review Zoning Code By: Joe Galli The question of what will Flagstaff look like in coming years has loomed over the community for recent decades. As a smaller community, relative to larger cities in Arizona, typical development and redevelopment often draw a keen eye from the public, which can result in changes to existing zoning guidelines. Both the County and the City of Flagstaff are considering changes to the local zoning codes governing future development, and it's important you weigh-in during the public comment section of the process. First, the City of Flagstaff Zoning Code Administrator, Daniel Symer, brought forth City zoning code changes related to accessory dwelling units or ADUs, and presented those changes to the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission in late June. Those changes seem to be acceptable, including clearly defining an ADU, and will move forward to the Mayor and Council with an approval recommendation. Additionally, the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission reviewed proposed changes to mixed-use zoning in Flagstaff. While the changes are quite technical, they are designed to bring uniformity to future mixed-use projects, so they jive with what mixed-use development currently exists. The problem with this idea is some of the changes proposed could infringe on a property owners current property rights, causing a Prop 207 issue to arise, and subjecting the City of Flagstaff to lawsuits for a future restriction of property rights. The City Community Development staff, including Mr. Symer, are currently reviewing the proposed mixed-use changes for Flagstaff’s Zoning Code, and we should see the changes before the Mayor and Council before year’s end. At the direction of the County Board of Supervisors, Coconino County Planning staff are also considering zoning code changes in an effort to: • Modernize the six-chapter code by reviewing land uses for those that are obsolete or unused, introduce new land uses to reflect changing trends and update the definitions. • Review land uses that currently require conditional use permits for those that may be administratively permitted instead, meaning that these land uses may be permitted either with an administrative or a building permit. • Clarify and improve performance standards to guide design and standards for many new and updated uses. • Streamline and clarify administrative processes, such as expanding waiver criteria for administrative adjustments. Public hearings will be scheduled later in the year. For questions and to view the draft chapters, visit the County’s Planning and Zoning webpage at http://www.coconino.az.gov/1948/Long-Range-Planning.

We Want You! The City is looking for individuals to join the Planning and Zoning Commission. For more information, contact the Chamber at (928) 774-4505!

CHAMBER'S 4TH OF JULY PARADE ROCKS!

My wife Jane and I attended our first 4th of July Parade in Flagstaff. We had nearly front row seats on the corner of N. Beaver St and W. Aspen Ave. First, I was amazed to see well over 100 floats entered in the parade. The Greater Flagstaff Chamber did a tremendous job with organization. Being an engineer, I marveled at the comprehensive and detailed attention to safety. This was especially critical with the exceptionally large vehicles. Every large float or vehicle had spotters, in reflective vests keeping the kids away from the equipment and expertly navigating the turns throughout the parade route. This was truly impressive. Please thank Julie, Kat and the entire organizing committee for hosting such a wonderful Independence Day Parade. - Michael Horton, Altice USA My family and I really enjoyed watching the military marching band! Proud of our town for putting on such a great event. Thank you Chamber! -Travis Babb, Babb Wealth Advisors, LLC The Chamber makes it very easy to take part in this event. Their instructions are clear, and the staging process is streamlined. We did run out of items to pass out along the route much earlier than anticipated, but our team LOVED taking part in this event. Our favorite part was seeing the community turnout and response! It’s always wonderful to see people in our beautiful stretch of northern Arizona coming together. We loved the shout-outs from the crowd. Their greetings for our tooth fairies were delightful! Our team is already buzzing about the possible theme for next year’s float. -Around The Mountain Pediatric Dentistry It was a wonderful experience. . .our favorite part was connecting with the community, celebrating with the public, seeing all the smiling faces in the crowd, and being able to give goodies to all the kids! -Flagstaff Dentistry 4 Kids
