PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Not many things excite me as much as the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and ATHENA AWARDS. What an impressive gathering to kick off a business year and a wonderful opportunity to honor and celebrate prestigious female leaders from all types of professional careers; for their excellence in their chosen fields, their mentorship of others to achieve their career goals, and their valuable engagement in community service.

It is fitting that this year’s Annual Meeting will feature two of Arizona’s most distinguished female leaders. This year, we are honored to have Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs address our esteemed guests in what promises to be an insightful state of the state. As the Governor of Arizona, Katie Hobbs brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the forefront of public service. Thank you to Governor Hobbs and her staff for taking the time to be here today. Our second keynote speaker Dr. Cara Christ M.D., M.S., is the Chief Medical Officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. Prior to joining Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Dr. Christ led the Arizona Department of Health Services as the longestserving director. Dr. Christ has built an esteemed career and is a leader in the field of public health policy. With these discussions, we are ensured to leave today more informed and better prepared to face the challenges of 2024.

their full potential, and create balance in leadership. Since its inception in 1982, the ATHENA Leadership Award has been presented to more than 7000 exemplary leaders in over 500 communities “across the world”. Along with visible recognition, the spirit of the ATHENAS is actually based on leadership tenets which, through the years have become the foundation of enlightened and successful leadership.

Over the past 18 years, I have had the special honor of reviewing hundreds of nominee forms and getting acquainted with them on paper. Little did I know how moving and impressive the process of selecting a recipient could be. Little did I know that each year, I could hardly wait to read about the accomplishments these ladies have achieved. This year is no different and I encourage you to take some time to read their abbreviated biographies which can be found in this program and get to know these great humans. Thanks to the judges who volunteered to score each nominee according to the three categories established nationally for the award.

For more than three decades the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce has chosen to invest in the spirit of the ATHENA awards as a way to recognize individuals who might otherwise go unnoticed for the passion and dedication they bring to the workplace and community at large. The ATHENA is an international award with a mission to support, develop, and honor female leaders, inspire females to achieve

In closing, from myself and the team at Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, I would like to thank every one of you for being here today and for your support of the Chamber’s work in our great community.

Filling this room are the leaders who shape northern Arizona today and for the future. We have much work to do, but together we will continue to build a healthy business climate and a vibrant, thriving community. Please enjoy the 2024 Annual Meeting and Award Luncheon.

ATHENA® INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARDS

The Athena International Leadership Awards program recognizes and honors individuals for their outstanding achievements and contributions in leadership, mentorship, and community service. Athena International, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting, developing, and honoring women leaders, presents the awards annually.

The history of the Athena International Leadership Awards dates back to 1982, when Martha Mertz founded the organization. Martha Mertz was inspired to create the Athena Awards after attending a dinner honoring a local businessman in Lansing, Michigan. She realized there was a need to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women in leadership roles, as they often went unnoticed.

The mission of Athena International is to support, develop, and honor women leaders. The organization strives to create a balance of leadership in businesses and communities by recognizing women’s and men’s accomplishments. Athena International promotes the professional advancement of women through mentoring, networking, and educational programs.

Each year, the Flagstaff Chamber presents the Athena International Leadership Awards to individuals who have demonstrated excellence, creativity, and initiative in their professional and personal lives. The award recipients are often leaders who have made significant contributions to their communities and have become

role models for other aspiring leaders, particularly women.

The Athena International Leadership Awards have expanded globally, with local Athena award programs in various regions. These awards serve as a platform to showcase and celebrate the diverse achievements of leaders who embody Athena International’s values.

In summary, the Athena International Leadership Awards have a rich history of recognizing women leaders and a mission to support, develop, and honor individuals who have made exceptional contributions to leadership, mentorship, and community service.

FLAGSTAFF GREEEN BUSINESS AWARD

In recognition of exemplary dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship, the Flagstaff Green Business Award celebrates businesses demonstrating outstanding commitment to eco-friendly practices and contributing positively to our community and planet. These businesses lead by example, implementing innovative initiatives, reducing their carbon footprint, conserving resources, and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. Their actions inspire others to follow suit and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for Flagstaff and beyond. Congratulations to the Flagstaff Green Business Award recipients for their remarkable efforts and contributions towards building a healthier, more sustainable world.”

In partnership with Desert Financial Credit Union, the Chamber created the award in 2022 alongside the Green Business Certification program, which seeks to encourage and recognize businesses’ efforts to self-regulate sustainable business practices. The inaugural Flagstaff Green Business Award was presented to Mother Road Brewing Company at the 2022 Annual Meeting. The Chamber highlighted Mother Road’s innovative carbon recapture program and partnership with the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Conserve and Protect Program.

With the growth of the award and a larger pool of nominees, 2023 saw the need to expand the scope of recognition concerning the scale of resources. The Chamber divided the award into two categories for large and small businesses. The recipient of the 2023 Green Business of the Year Award for large business was Arizona Snowbowl for their partnerships with local companies and the National Forest Foundation that resulted in a significant reduction in material waste, the offset of 468 metric tons of carbon emissions in addition to forest thinning and watershed health projects throughout northern Arizona. Quality Connections received the Green Business Award for small businesses for their toner cartridge recycling program and a commitment to distributing environmentally friendly cleaning products.

The Flagstaff Chamber takes pride in our local businesses and non-profits and believes that we can create a greener future for northern Arizona through innovation and community-wide appreciation for our beautiful home.

Devonna demonstrates professional excellence, commitment to community service, personal leadership, and the advancement of women. She is a strong advocate for affordable housing for all, in addition to her work with those affected by Domestic Violence.

Two years ago, Devonna secured funding and identified a Flagstaff motel which HSNA successfully rehabbed, and 44 units of transitional housing will be leased beginning January 2024 to households experiencing homelessness.

Devonna has won several awards relating to her

work in the affordable housing arena, was instrumental in the creation of the Flagstaff City Housing Commission, and founded the Flagstaff Tax Credit Coalition where she worked with Flagstaff nonprofits to create an advocacy campaign educating the community on the importance of non-restricted taxpayer directed donations that stay in the community.

She is not afraid to dream big when brainstorming solutions. The perfect example of this was her concept for Sharon’s Attic, born out of her desire to be more flexible in the pursuit of programs. Fast forward one year and Sharon’s Attic opened, providing an unrestricted revenue source for HSNA to fulfill its mission, but also local job and volunteer opportunities. This is only one example of the determination that can be seen throughout her work.

In February 2020, amid pandemic challenges, she courageously launched a standalone waxing studio. Within 9 months and two location changes, this evolved into Flagstaff Skincare Med Spa—an esteemed establishment with over 1000 clients that earned accolades as the “Best Day Spa” and “Best Skincare” for two consecutive years.

Throughout this transformative journey, Kati navigated the joys and challenges of new motherhood while leading a team of seven, prioritizing standards, personalized client care, and professional development. Kati was recently named one of the “Top 20 Women Entrepreneurs To Take In-

Kate Wyatt is Emergency Department Care Coordinator at Flagstaff Medical Center (FMC). She completed her undergraduate degree in Social Work through Northern Arizona University and obtained her Master of Social Work through Arizona State University.

Prior to Kate’s work at FMC, she worked at Northland Family Help Center for 10 years in a variety of roles. But it was in her last role as the Director of Human Trafficking Services that she created the Flagstaff Initiative Against Trafficking (FIAT). FIAT was established in 2017 and is a community collective of professional service providers and volunteers who seek to end Human Trafficking through education and awareness.

Kate has been a driving force behind the

spiration From In 2024” by Entrepreneurs Herald.

Katie supports the Flagstaff Kindness Project; organized a laser hair-removal marathon, raising over $2500 for the Flagstaff Birthing Collective; participated in trail cleanups for the preservation of natural spaces; and volunteered during the pandemic, distributing emergency bags to the homeless community.

Katie is an avid runner and HOKA NAZ Elite added her to their roster in 2021. The Arizona Daily Sun wrote “Wasserman graduated from Columbia University, where, according to NAZ Elite, ‘she was an Ivy League champion in the mile run’ She attended post-graduate school at Notre Dame, where she had her breakout 5000m performance at the NCAAs as well as earning AllACC honors in the 1500m.”

Linny Jones co-founded Tandemly because of her early career experience at start-ups in Silicon Valley where she had a first-hand look at the challenges teams face as they grow into their success. After experiencing the complex dynamics in these companies, she believed she could be of more service by receiving her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern. She uses her experience and expertise to create organizations and teams that are more resilient, by developing systems and processes to foster speed, agility, and success.

When Linny and her husband moved to Flagstaff they started the luxury short-term rental management company, Dwell. At Dwell, Linny has created an environment that fosters opportunities such as a hands- on job training program for college students.

Trainees include, but are not limited to, Flagstaff Police and Fire Departments, EMS, social service providers, school personnel, Mountain Line, victim advocates, hotel staff, and court staff. She serves on the Ethics Committee for Northern Arizona Healthcare (NAH) and is part of the Child Abuse Resource Team, which evaluates organizational response to patients who are known or suspected victims of abuse.

Kate won the “Game Changer” award through the Arizona Anti-Trafficking Network, a statewide organization in 2023. Through all her professional and personal endeavors, she makes our community a safer place to live.

Linny also has a therapy practice, Curios Mindset, focused specifically on serving teenage and young adult women (ages 12 to 25) by providing mental health support and counseling. From anxiety, to eating disorders, to depression, she helps these young women navigate life’s toughest challenges and set themselves up for success.

Giving back is a priority to Linny, her hands on involvement in the non-profit SHE-CAN builds women’s leadership in post-conflict nations like Liberia, Cambodia, and Guatemala. She sits on two non-proft boards, Able ARTS and Ariglad. She also enjoys hosting a monthly book club to meet with local women from all walks of life for camaraderie and discussion.

Gissell Chairez holds her Arizona Property and Casualty Insurance License and is the Head of Marketing at Brandon Redfern State Farm in Flagstaff. Her boss describes her as an ambitious, goal-oriented young person and the biggest advocate for the community in the agency, always looking for ways to serve and opportunities to grow.

Gissell belongs to and serves as the Philanthropy Chair for the Flagstaff Young Professionals; she is a church leader at the Bridge Church serving on the worship & media team and assistant leader with the dance worship team; and was the Lead Mentor for the Northern Arizona Cinderella Scholarship Program

Kim Ward is the Events & Sales Manager for the Weatherford Hotel. She attended Iowa State University and obtained her degree in Event Management with a minor in Business. Her background is in hotel event management and conference centers.

Just a few years out of college, Kim moved from Iowa to join the Weatherford Hotel team in July 2021, right as the hotel and the world were adjusting to the new reality of COVID. At the time, the hotel was in a difficult financial situation and working with a skeleton crew, but Kim used her many skills to almost single-handedly revitalize their banqueting operation. Due to Kim’s enthusiasm, persistence, work ethic, and unwaveringly positive attitude, 2022 was

the hotel’s most successful year EVER for events.

The Weatherford Hotel was honored with Best Event Planning from the Arizona Daily Sun’s Best of Flag Award for 2022 and 2023, which was almost entirely due to Kim’s efforts.

Kim serves as an Ambassador for the Chamber, and although younger than many of her subordinates, Kim is a natural mentor, and her positive qualities tend to rub off on those around her. She has worked with a series of young women who have assisted her with events and taken what they learned from her to move on to new professional adventures.

in 2022. She raised over $15,000 fundraising for the charity “Cota for Danielle”, as well as volunteering with the Ballet Forklorico de Colores and being instrumental in securing a $5,000 grant for the program.

Gissell grew up in a tough situation, dealing with some very difficult circumstances. She then made the decision to turn her life around after attending church with a friend and overcame the odds to become a successful, contributing member of the community. She has since married, has a beautiful daughter, and has built a successful career.

Mariah Zavala recently became the Business Development Specialist with Mountain Mojo Group in Flagstaff. She graduated from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. Seasonally, she is the Program Director for Summer Pro League in partnership with the Pascua Yaqui Tribe.

Mariah’s enthusiasm for community service is evident through her community roles, volunteerism, and advocacy. She serves the Flagstaff community as a Commissioner on the Indigenous Commission for the City of Flagstaff allowing her to advocate for local Indigenous communities, she is a Board Member for “Girls on the Run Northern Arizona” and “Run Wild”.

One of Mariah’s biggest achievements was devel-

oping a partnership with Grand Canyon Youth and Summer Pro League. Since 2021 she has been coordinating and fundraising to take Pascua Yaqui Tribe youth rafting at zero cost to their families. She saw this dream come to fruition this past summer when nine youth were able to participate in a 5-day river rafting experience.

Recently, Mariah has been collaborating with Mothers Against drunk Driving to share their mission in Northern Arizona and bring the resources of this organization to the indigenous communities. Growing up with a single mother and a grandmother who was a migrant farmworker, overcoming poverty and adversity, Mariah understands the importance of having a seat at the table. She utilizes this seat to advocate for change, promote social capital, and build community.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement Now Accepting Grant Applications

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement (the Foundation) announces its first Impact Grant cycle of the year for organizations addressing Arizona’s most critical health challenges: mental health, substance use disorder, chronic health conditions, and health equity.

“Last year was a monumental year for our grantees, with 125 community partners receiving funding to improve lives across our state,” said Dr. Christine Bracamonte Wiggs, President and Board Chair of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement. “We hope to help make an even greater impact this year and look forward to receiving our first round of applications for 2024.”

The Foundation is accepting applications starting Feb. 1 and continuing until Feb. 29. Funding priority is given to proposals that expand publicly available resources, are scalable (or have the potential to increase systems-level capacity) and have a measurable impact. The grant term is one year, with a funding date of May 31, 2024. All organizations seeking Foundation funding must have an active grantee account with Arizona Community Foundation.

The Foundation aims to mobilize, uplift, and advance the health of communities statewide by focusing on Arizona’s key health challenges. In 2023, the Foundation awarded $3.1 million to 125 community partners across all 15 AZ counties. To learn more about the Foundation and this grant opportunity, visit: azbluefoundation. org/grants/overview.

Crisis Services Are Available to All Arizonans

Many Arizonans are unaware that crisis services are available to all Arizonans regardless of their health insurance coverage or lack thereof. These services are provided to anyone who calls the crisis line at no cost.

For all of Northern, including Flagstaff, and Southern Arizona, Arizona Complete Health manages the crisis system. Arizona Complete Health is a family of health plans serving individuals enrolled in AHCCCS (Arizona Complete Health-Complete Care Plan, AzCH-CCP, and Care1st), Medicare (Wellcare) and the Health Insurance Marketplace (Ambetter). Crisis services are provided through a contract with the AHCCCS program and are part of the broader set of services provided by the Regional Behavioral Health Authority (RBHA) for that region – Care1st in the North and AzCHCCP in the South.

Arizona Complete Health is committed to community partnerships and collaboration with first responder and criminal justice agencies to improve health outcomes for our communities. As the RBHA in your community, we are responsible for oversight and creation of a robust and easy to navigate Crisis System that’s available 24/7, 365 days a year.

In Northern Arizona over the past year, we have expanded the Crisis System and increased resources and availability. This expansion includes five Northern Arizona counties and the continued oversight of seven Southern Arizona counties and eight tribal nations. Our 24-hour Crisis System – which includes the AZ Crisis Line, Crisis Mobile Teams (CMTs) and Crisis Observation Centers – is available to everyone regardless of insurance or eligibility. No one is denied for Crisis Services.

CHAMBER MEMBER NEWS

The AZ Crisis Line can be reached by calling (844) 534-4673 (HOPE), or texting 44673 (4 HOPE) 24/7. Behavioral Health professionals are here to support any member of the community during their time of need with no limits on reasons for calling. We define a “crisis” as anything outside a person’s ability to cope and we adhere to a strict “no wrong door” policy. Most calls to the Crisis Line are resolved over the phone and that caller is referred to services within their community. In some cases, a Crisis Mobile Team of behavioral health professionals is dispatched to meet the person where they are.

We do understand there will still be calls made to 9-1-1 asking for help, either by a person in crisis or a community member. Because of this, we have dedicated resources to developing programs that connect traditional 9-1-1 emergency services to Crisis Services for call transfers and community dispatch. It is our goal to integrate the Crisis System so seamlessly into the emergency services system that Crisis becomes as ubiquitous as Police and Fire/EMS.

The Crisis Services Department has a specific team called First Responder Services. This team is focused on Crisis System outreach, collaboration, and education. This team develops and improves Crisis System processes and programs for system partners (to include law enforcement & fire/EMS departments, 9-1-1 operations centers, county health departments, emergency departments and crisis service providers). They also provide education and trainings to system partners and community members, including but not limited to Crisis System Overviews,

The success of our Crisis System relies on ease of access to services. We exist to make things easier for our community members to access care. In our first year in Northern Arizona, we have seen an increase in overall utilization. We hope that this trend continues throughout 2024.

We are always available for questions or feedback, and to discuss trends. Our First Responder contact for Flagstaff area is:
