Claire Cunningham in association with Jess Curtis/Gravity

Adam Smith Theatre is an historical building in the centre of Kirkcaldy presenting a high quality programme of drama, dance, music, comedy and children’s theatre, including a well-loved annual Christmas pantomime. In addition to presenting live theatre, the auditorium provides a modern cinematic experience, showing contemporary blockbusters alongside a selection of arthouse and classic films. Our Theatre Café is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 2.30pm serving hot food, snacks and home baking. The bar is open on performance nights and for pre theatre meals on some performances.

Beauty and the Beast will never get on. He licks his hands, stands on the toilet and runs through the woods. She carries a hankie, never gets mud on her shoes and always remembers to send a thank you note. So how come, when she sees him run like that, when he brings down a deer, when they sit at night just watching the stars, how come her heart starts to spin? Caged is a story about two people trapped together finding more freedom than they ever imagined. www.catherinewheels.co.uk Caged is recommended for all beauties and beasts aged 8 and over. Caged is also performed at Rothes Halls on Wed 4 May at 10.30am & 1.30pm

A double bill from award-winning dancer/choreographer Claire Cunningham showcasing her exceptional dance technique and impressive power. ME (Mobile/Evolution) is a show woven from humorous stories; about doctors and dancing, bikes and ballet; all threaded together and balanced upon, hanging from, spinning on and swinging on crutches. Any possible sentimentality is undercut with a healthy dose of Scottish sarcasm. Audiences for this critically acclaimed production, seen at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2009, have been delighted, as well as provoked into questioning their ideas of aesthetics and dance. “...feisty, innovative, radical and witty... It’s hugely, generously entertaining too” ★★★★★ The Herald

When dark shadows come stealing down Tom’s bedroom walls he thinks it might be monsters or ogres or trolls. But Tom’s not afraid, for he’s a brave little boy. So he peeps out of the window and what should he see but PIRATES. Stranger still they’re GIRL PIRATES, stealing the front of his house! Tom joins the Girl Pirates on their daring adventure across the high seas to an island where some grown-up pirates are guarding their treasure. The Way Back Home The House by Oliver Jeffers

of Mystery

Adapted for the stage by Adam Bampton-Smith An inter-galactic adventure tale for families and young children. Oliver Jeffers, award-winning author of How to Catch a Star and Lost and Found, returns with an inter-galactic tale about a little boy seeking adventure. One day a boy finds a plane in his cupboard. He flies his plane higher and higher until he runs out of petrol and lands on the moon. He is frightened, lost and alone until a passing Martian lands there too! Who is the strange alien? Can they be friends? And how will they find their way back home??? With original music and plenty of audience participation, this new production for families and young children has been created by the team behind the hit show Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.

Set during the Second World War, bel Canto tell the story, through song, of a group of children evacuated to the countryside and find themselves billeted in a very strange house. What secrets does the spooky old house conceal? bel Canto Voices is a group of highly talented young people who rehearse and perform here at the Adam Smith Theatre throughout the year. I5

Adam Smith Music Theatre for Young People Get a Move On 111 Kids on Stage

By Henrik Ibsen In a new version by Frank McGuinness Helene Alving is preparing for the opening of an orphanage, built in memory of her late husband. Her beloved artist son, Oswald, has returned from Paris to honour the occasion, but his long-awaited homecoming rapidly descends into tragedy as his presence triggers the exposure of a dark story of hypocrisy and betrayed love. Henrik Ibsen’s plays were considered scandalous to many of his era, when Victorian values of family life and propriety largely held sway in Europe. In Ghosts his study of hidden passions and family secrets remains as dramatically alive as ever in Frank McGuinness’ vital new version. I6

Following his sell-out nationwide show, ‘The Manifesto’, award-winning comedian and activist Mark Thomas returns with his brand new show: Extreme Rambling: Walking The Wall. Never one to take the easy option, Mark decided to go rambling in the Middle East and walked the entire length of the Israeli Separation Barrier crossing between the Israeli and the Palestinian side. This is the story of 300,000 settlers; a 750 km wall; six arrests, one stoning; too much hummus and a simple question… “Can you ever get away from it all with a good walk?”

Clockwork

An adaptation of an original work by Philip Pullman

A Visible Fictions and Scottish Opera Co-production Imagine starting to tell a story – but not knowing how it will end...

With such classic hits as Sweets For My Sweet, Needles and Pins, Don’t Throw Your Love Away and When You Walk In The Room, The Searchers have enjoyed record sales well in excess of 40 million. Their recent compilation album, The Very Best of The Searchers, has seen a recent well-deserved return to the UK charts. Their performance includes all their famous hits, plus many of their original album recordings, B-sides and a selection of other well-known favourites. I 12

This is what happens to Fritz, who one night begins to tell a story to the townsfolk of Glockenheim. Gathered in the tavern around a roaring fire, safe and warm from the winter weather, they listen, entranced. But the more Fritz unravels his tale of kings, queens and mysterious clockwork machines, the more it comes to life. In fact, it springs to life in more ways than one... Told through a captivating mix of puppetry, live action, music and song, Clockwork takes you to a world where past merges into present, life merges with machine, and fiction becomes scarily real.

Adrian Edmondson and The Bad Shepherds The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because they really like the noise. They think the songs are better than people remember. They love folk instruments. It works. They do songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, The Specials, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others, even Kraftwerk! Alright, they’re not all punk, but they come from roughly the same era. They’ve mostly given the songs a kind of Celtic feel and they’ve stuck in the odd reel and jig here and there... but occasionally they just thrash! They’ve always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the excitement of watching punk live in the 70s.

He played to packed auditoriums up and down the country last year, and we are delighted to welcome the “Voice of Golf” to Fife. Peter enjoyed a successful golf career winning 21 professional tournaments, including 3 British PGA Championships. He also represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Ryder Cup 15 times. Peter once claimed he’s a golf commentator only because he’s “there as an old player, a lover of the game and a good weaver of stories.” Modesty would prevent him saying that Golf Digest described him as “the greatest golf commentator ever”– but to many that’s what he is. Peter will share memories from his childhood and formative years, plus his own insightful views on the game of golf today, as well as taking questions from the audience.

A real King, or just a legend? The truth is no-one really knows. One fact that is true, however, is that the fantastical tale of King Arthur, the hero warrior, is one of the great stories of the world. Steeped in chivalry and romance, it is an epic story of a King and his exploits, involving magic and magicians in an age where good conquered evil. The multi award-winning Arthur, the Story of a King encapsulates Wee Stories’ love of literature, high comedy, visual games and imaginative stagecraft. “A roaring success and a breathtaking triumph” The Scotsman A Robert Wiseman Dairies Schools competition show.

Their live shows continue to wow audiences with a rich, harmonic sound that brings spectacular colour to much-loved classical and pop anthems. The Coal Porters

Walter Strauss

Kim Shepherd

The Sermon Organ Trio

Led by Kentuckian and former Long Ryder, Sid Griffin, The Coal Porters are an incredible five-piece acoustic line-up who proudly call themselves “the world's first alt-bluegrass band”. They have been aptly described as “a cross between the Clash and Bill Monroe”.

It’s rare and exciting to witness such artistry and technique on the guitar. Walter layers on highly-articulated melodies and harmonies, rhythms and counter-rhythms, giving the impression he is magically playing several instruments at once.

Local singer Kim Shepherd will perform an evening of laid-back easy listening music, ranging from popular hits to musical theatre. She will be accompanied by two of her colleagues from “Cut The Cake”, Alan Condie and Willie Logan.

The Sermon Organ Trio consists of Paul Harrison (organ), Malcolm MacFarlane (guitar) and Tom Gordon (drums). Their music is wide-ranging from sensitive ballads through jazz, blues and Latin to the seriously groovy, with the emphasis on original compositions plus a few classics and huge amounts of invention, interaction and improvisation!

“Absolutely inspiring” Janice Long, BBC Radio Two.

“A many-layered, multi-textured, one-man folk festival." Maverick Magazine

MacFloyd

The Seedboat (Bàta an t-Sìl)

Wee Stories

A unique bilingual project exploring musical and linguistic links between Ireland and Scotland in song and story. Maggie MacInnes, descended from generations of singers and storytellers on Barra, and Colum Sands, from the great County Down musical clan, have pooled their considerable talents to weave a bi-lingual tapestry of songs old and new, reaching across the waves that have divided and joined Scotland and Ireland over the centuries. Maggie and Colum have worked on The Seedboat over the past five years, exchanging ideas and recording tracks between their own busy solo schedules. The album rejoices in the wealth of language shared by the two countries, and carries stories and emotions that are truly universal. From heart-breaking love songs to quirky originals, from translations that capture the spirit to tunes that have stood the test of time, this is a truly unique collection.
