GUIDE TO THE ADAM SMITH THEATRE Autumn / Winter 2023
sall comingtogether

Welcome to Fife’s revitalised creative and cultural hub!

Let’s take a look back in time and see the journey of this magnificent venue. the Adam Smith Halls, as it was originally called, was opened on 11 October 1899 by another famous Fifer, industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, to honour the hugely influential 18th century economist and philosopher Adam Smith, who was born in Kirkcaldy.

it was funded by a bequest of £50,000 left by Provost michael Beveridge, who was keen that the memorial should include halls and a library. When it opened, the venue contained small halls, a library and a Victorian concert hall with a horseshoe gallery to seat 1,660 people. Over the years it was home to music, drama, lectures and gatherings.

major renovations were carried out to mark the 250th anniversary of Adam Smith’s birth in 1973, and a new-look venue emerged to cater for the changing needs of the community, with meeting spaces, a café/bar and an auditorium seating 475. now the 300th anniversary has been marked by another reinvention of this iconic building.

The Adam Smith Theatre is back and ready to take its place as the creative and cultural hub in the heart of Kirkcaldy.

So, what’s changed?

Foyer and Box Office

We’ve relocated our Box Office and now, with its eye-catching curved profile, it welcomes you into the heart of the building. the bust of Adam Smith is in a prominent position in the foyer as a proud reminder of the man who gave the building its name.

The Spinning Top Café & Bar

the name of our new café and bar is another nod to philosopher Smith, who believed that a healthy economy was like a top, balanced and spinning fast. the new layout and décor have created a welcoming, bright and busy space, offering a bistro-style menu, as well as light lunches and a fully licenced bar – all drawing on local suppliers with fresh, homemade produce.

The Beveridge Suite

Keeping its original name in honour of michael Beveridge, who bequeathed the funds for the original venue, the Adam Smith Halls in 1899. this room is perfect for larger conferences, award ceremonies and celebration events. it has a potential capacity for receptions of up to 200 and is equipped with a private bar and movable stage.

Design Suite

A high-spec creative studio, fully equipped for artists and designers at all stages of their career to jump into digital work. Featuring bookable desk space, edit suite, laser cutter, 3D printer and Vr headsets.

The Exchange

Smith believed that “every man lives by exchanging.” this not only nods to the idea of trade and commerce that was so important to his work, it also speaks to the notion of a meeting room being a space for the exchange of ideas. the name also alludes to the changeability of the room itself. it’s a meeting and event space with the flexibility to host business gatherings, training sessions or even small private parties.

The Advantage event space

named after Smith’s theory of Absolute Advantage, showing how both parties in business can benefit from trade, this is a great community space for the budding stars of tomorrow to hone their skills and tread the boards! We’ve installed a mirrored wall, complete with ballet barre, for rehearsals but which can also be out of sight behind curtains.

The Auditorium

the 475-seat auditorium has undergone a major upgrade, with new seats, carpet, freshly painted interiors and state-of-the-art stage equipment.
