NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE BROADCAST

The Magistrate Academy Award nominee and Tony Award-winner John Lithgow (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Shrek, 3rd Rock from the Sun) takes the title role in Arthur Wing Pinero’s uproarious Victorian farce, directed by Olivier Award-winner Timothy Sheader (Crazy for You and Into the Woods, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, London). In a similar vein to the National Theatre’s smash-hit classic comedies, She Stoops to Conquer and London Assurance, The Magistrate is sure to have audiences doubled up with laughter. When amiable magistrate Posket (John Lithgow) marries Agatha (Olivier Award-winner Nancy Carroll, After the Dance), little does he realise she’s dropped five years from her age – and her son’s. When her deception looks set to be revealed, it sparks a series of hilarious indignities and outrageous mishaps. PAGE 4

THE FENCE COLLECTIVE PRESENTS

The Pictish Trail with support from eagleowl & Randolph’s Leap It’s not easy to pin down The Pictish Trail, aka Johnny Lynch. His critically acclaimed 2008 debut album, Secret Soundz Vol.1, was a gloriously eclectic slice of lo-fi folk-pop, and he is also one half of demented dance-pop duo Silver Columns with Adem Ilhan. As if that wasn’t enough, he also has his hands full running Fence Records, a DIY indie label based in the East Neuk of Fife, which he runs alongside Kenny Anderson, best known as King Creosote. After a summer spent playing the pick of the UK’s music festivals with his band, Lynch put the finishing touches to Secret Soundz Vol 2, released in January 2013. He will be accompanied on stage by his latest signings to Fence, the Edinburgh-based six headed beast, eagleowl, and Adam Ross of Randolph’s Leap. “Compulsory listening. Indebted to Hot Chip, the Beta Band and Paul McCartney, this is charming, fresh and quietly outré” ★★★★ The Observer

THE BALL

GILDED BALLOON

Murder, Marple and Me Starring Janet Prince, written by Philip Meeks and Directed by Stella Duffy. Margaret Rutherford’s performance as Miss Marple made her a true movie icon, but it nearly didn’t happen. This intriguing new play humorously unearths the fascinating reasons why. Witness this clash of the titans; two of Britain’s most influential women in the arts in the 1950s and ‘60s who staggered through a mutual distaste for each other and a serious aversion to each other’s work to eventually come out the other side as friends. Come and unearth the mystery behind the mystery. Thur 14 February I 7.30pm I £18.50, conc. £17 I Pre-theatre meals £10

Recreating the romance of the Viennese Festive season, reminding you of a bygone age of glamorous soirees and Strauss waltzes, the show features highlights from some of the great Operettas of the Strauss family, Kalman and Lehar including Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow and many more. The European Orchestral Ensemble will accompany four Soloists from major Opera companies including Opera North, English National Opera and D’Oyly Carte. PAGE 6

The Lost Art of the Film Explainer During the silent era, the live musician was an essential part of the cinema experience, but some audiences were also treated to the finely honed craft of the Film Explainer. Part narrator and part actor, the Film Explainer stood next to the screen enriching the movies with an entertaining combination of background information, unique interpretation and theatrical storytelling. The art of the Film Explainer has since been largely forgotten. Enter stage right renowned Scottish storyteller Andy Cannon and cellist/composer Wendy Weatherby. Andy and Wendy revive this lost art with their popular brand of traditional stories and music accompanying rare films from the Scottish Screen Archive including Scotland’s first fiction film from 1912, the year the Hippodrome cinema first opened its doors. Films: Buy Your Own Cherries (1904); Mairi: Romance of a Highland Maiden (1912) & St Kilda: Britain’s Loneliest Isle (1923/28).

Slick

THE BALL

Winner of a Scotsman Fringe First (2008) and a Critic’s Award for Theatre in Scotland (2008/9) Slick is a hilarious, dark and dirty exploration of greed, corruption and loss-of-innocence. Slick combines absurd comedy, visual storytelling, puppetry, object theatre and physical performance to create a unique ensemble performance with comic-strip visuals. The world is seen through little Malcolm Biggar, a nine year old with a passion for his skateboard, a harrowing fear of his lunatic neighbours and a growing realisation that perhaps his parents do not always have his best interests at heart… “a show whose whole creative team deserves a standing ovation.” Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman

Spring Awakening Icarus succeeds by following its namesake too close to the sun, always picking plays which seem just out of their reach, soaring most elegantly and creating a beautiful organised chaos when they are stretching beyond their grasp. In Spring Awakening, 15-year-old Melchior is chased out of town for acts of hedonistic, lewd and despicable moral character. Wendla, his 14-year-old love, dies during a tragic abortion thrust upon her by narrow-minded parents. But Melchior is the brightest boy in school and knows sex is just a natural act that ends in the beauty of childbirth. Crushed by Wendla’s death and persecuted by the authorities (and even his own parents) Melchior battles through purgatory where he confronts the ghosts of his past. Toploader With over two million album sales to their name and a string of top 20 hits both at home and abroad, Toploader quickly became one of the most popular acts in British music, after forming in 1997. Their debut album, Onka’s Big Moka sold over 1 million copies and remained in the Top 5 of the UK album chart for over six months. Their cover of King Harvest’s song Dancing in the Moonlight became a global hit, and their second album Magic Hotel, reached number 3 in the UK Album Chart. The band decided to break up in 2003 due to the demise of their record label S2 but, after an extended hiatus, released their third album, Only Human, to critical acclaim. The debut single, Never Stop Wondering, described as a “sparkling comeback” by James Walsh of Q Radio, became the unrivalled soundtrack for Sky Sports and the BBC, providing the anthem for major sporting events. www.toploaderofficial.com

My Name is Rachel Corrie On March 16, 2003, Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old American, was killed by an Israeli military bulldozer in the Gaza Strip as she was trying to prevent the demolition of Palestinian homes. My Name Is Rachel Corrie is a one-woman play composed from Rachel’s own journals, letters and emails – creating a portrait of a messy, skinny, articulate, Salvador Dali-loving chain smoker, who left her home in Olympia, Washington, “to support non-violent resistance to Israel’s military occupation.” Rachel’s writings were edited by British actor Alan Rickman and Guardian editor Katherine Viner. A powerfully honest insight into one of the most complicated international political conflicts that continues to resonate across the world. This highly acclaimed production was a sell-out success at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, in March 2010. This tour will mark the 10th anniversary of Rachel’s death. “A theatrical tour de force based on reality, resulting in a production that feels far more truthful than any of the news broadcasts covering the events around the story.” Onstage Scotland

These acoustic performances have already resulted in major sell out shows across Europe and Munro is currently making plans for a new acoustic album in the nature of a musical anthology. Munro’s Heart of America album was recently voted Album of the Year in the Scottish Trads Awards and his concept album and live show An Turas – the journey has been considered a magnanimous success by both critics and fans. MERCURY PRIZE NOMINEE

Sam Lee and friends with support Thomas McCarthy

Sam Lee, Mercury Prize nominated folk singer, promoter and animateur released his debut album Ground Of Its Own in June 2012. The recording is a musical manifesto, reflecting the artistic journey Sam has taken so far and the less than conventional route getting there. A naturally gifted voice, singing was new to him until his first encounter with folk song some 6 years ago. This discovery of a new world compelled him to abandon his work as a visual artist and embark on a journey into the old songs of The British Isles. Sam is fast becoming accepted as a new pioneer, defining the sound, sight and texture of contemporary folksong. He was given the 2011 Arts Foundation Award, which for the first time, honoured folk music amongst the art forms. Likewise his live band, Sam Lee and Friends, carve a new acoustic with their homemade and mongrelised instrumentation using unconventional and contemporary arrangements that challenge preconceptions of what traditional folk should sound like.

Carlton Mains Frickley Colliery Band See one of the biggest names in the brass band world this Spring. Currently no.10 in the World, the band was established in 1884 in West Yorkshire. The original bandsmen worked in the local lime kilns, quarries and brick yards with one of the bands’ first engagements playing at Queen Victoria’s Jubilee celebrations. In November 1923, the band adopted its current name from the then mine owners, the Carlton Main Coal Company. The next 50 years saw the band at the very top of the brass band movement, winning almost every major title. The band count themselves fortunate to have many truly world class musicians in their ranks including the multi-award-winning Principal Cornet player Kirsty Abbotts, whose many awards include being the solo champion of Great Britain and best soloist at the English Nationals. Passing Through by Alistair Rutherford

There’s been a terrible mistake! The Dockers Social Club booked The Ace of Spades thinking it was a Motorhead tribute band, but they got Tommy the Magician instead. Tommy’s made a sharp exit and is nursing a pint and a bruised ego in the pub down the road when Alice stomps in from the rain. She’s soaked, been stood up and that’s it, she's had it forever with romance. What neither of them know is that some magic might just be round the corner. Or is true love just another conjuring trick, a sleight of hand? This is a new romantic comedy by Alistair Rutherford (BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Scotland) performed in an interactive cabaret style at Tiffany’s, Carnegie Hall. “sure to put a smile on the face of all but the hardest-hearted.” The Herald

Cahalen Morrison & Eli West When Morrison and West released their debut album The Holy Coming of The Storm in early 2011 it received almost universal acclaim and ended up in many a top ten album list at the end of the year. Their unique blend of studied antiquity with their songwriting skills and superb picking and singing struck a chord with listeners and they topped it off with a triumphant Celtic Connections appearance. 18 months later they released the follow up, Our Lady of the Tall Trees, an album that continues in much the same vein as its predecessor which is tantamount to saying that it’s essential listening. Cahalen and Eli are two highly talented multi-instrumentalists whose gorgeous earthy old time music is pure authenticity. “Thrilling.” The List Thur 18 April I 7.30pm I £10.50, conc. £8.50. SELL A DOOR THEATRE COMPANY

1984 “War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength”. Following sell-out tours of Spring Awakening and Lord of the Flies, Sell a Door Theatre Company’s new production is Matthew Dunster’s faithful adaptation of George Orwell’s Dystopian Science Fiction novel. Winston Smith rewrites history for the Ministry of Truth, but when he’s handed a note that says simply ‘I love you’ by a woman he hardly knows, he decides to risk everything in a search for the real truth. Can he hold fast or will he renounce everything and learn to love Big Brother? In what many consider to be one the greatest works of British fiction, Orwell has created his own ‘double speak’, with concepts such as Big Brother and Room 101, infiltrating the global consciousness. This is your chance to see the novel brought to life through the creative imaginings of London’s multi award winning Sell a Door Theatre Company. Claudia Aurora

THE BALL

Growing up in the countryside surrounding the Portuguese city of Porto, Claudia Aurora lived on a diet of hard-nosed rock music. It was only when she moved to Bristol nearly a decade ago that a latent appreciation of fado – the folk-blues of her homeland that, perhaps appropriately, resonates with highly emotional themes of loss and longing – began to develop. And Claudia’s more than made amends in the intervening years, effortlessly gliding towards fado’s top table with each syllable uttered by her traffic-stopping voice every bit as beguiling as the work of her compatriots Mariza and Ana Moura. Not only was Claudia’s debut album, Silencio, the first fado record cut in the UK in more than half a century, it also announced an impressive new talent. Great things clearly come to those who wait. “A beguiling voice! And her instrumentalists are superb!” The Scotsman PAGE 29

Will the painter be steadfast and, together with the tin soldier, find a new path back to beauty and happiness?
