Welcome

I am delighted to introduce our summer programme where, once again, our programming team have brought to Fife a fantastic selection of music, drama, dance, exhibitions and children’s events. Our theatre shows will take you on a roller coaster of emotions from the scary (Death Toll) to the heart-warming (Chaplin). We’re very excited to welcome musical performances from the likes of Arild Anderson, Scottish Opera and Karen Matheson, as well as hosting the National Festival of Youth Theatre and, of course, our very own Kirkcaldy Film Festival. A few of our staff top picks are on the next page and full details of all events throughout the brochure. You will notice that we have introduced a nominal booking fee which will enable us to continue to bring you the type of cultural highlights you have come to expect from us and details of this can be found on p.47 along with details of how to book. Events go on sale regularly so to make sure you keep up to date please sign up to our email newsletter which will keep you posted on all of the great services on offer across our libraries, museums, theatres and galleries or check out www.onfife.com. I hope you enjoy the fantastic summer programme we have laid ON for you. Heather Stuart, CEo

Our Top Picks There is a really great line-up of big musical productions this year. As a big fan of musicals I can’t wait for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tell me on a Sunday at Adam Smith Theatre. Mix that with Girls Night OOT at Rothes Halls and the musical adaptation of life and music of Woody Guthrie in Woody Sez at Carnegie Hall and I’ll be dancing and singing all summer! Yvonne melville, service Development team leader, libraries (adults)

I’m thrilled that the singing Kettle exhibition will be ON display again after the successful run at the Rothes Halls last year. Kirkcaldy Galleries is always very popular with families over the summer and this exhibition has lots of activities as well as being guaranteed a fun-packed trip down memory lane for any of the Singing Kettle’s 50 million+ audiences over the last 30 years!

Two of my passions are reading short stories and going to the theatre and I can’t wait to share them both with my son when we go see Leaf by Niggle at Carnegie Hall. This theatre piece based on the J.R.R. Tolkien short story will be fantastic introduction to the theatre for my little guy and a real bonding point for us offering a very entertaining evening.

Tae Sup Wi’ a Fifer is a club that began life in 2015, when James Yorkston was invited to curate some nights for Adam Smith Theatre. pretty soon the evening developed a reputation for its quality, diverse line-ups and laid-back, welcoming nature. Malcolm Middleton returns to the limelight following a 7 year hiatus after the release of his masterfully crafted album Summer of 13. Siphoning his influences of pop, Metal and Folk, you’re in for a treat as Middleton performs a rare acoustic set at Adam Smith Theatre. Viking Moses achieves a special balance of warmth and command, with familiar melodies that draws in listeners. Strongly lyrical songs are played out through tunes that flirt with pop, Soul and Americana, all strung together with a unique pulsing guitar, and by his robust voice, which ebbs from delicate whispers to throaty howls. yorkston Thorne khan is a new project from James Yorkston, Jon Thorne and Suhail Yusuf Khan. Now on its 6th fantastically fabulous tour, The Naked Truth is the hit comedy play from dave Simpson, the writer of smash-hit comedy Girls Night Out. Set in a pole dancing class, The Naked Truth is a brilliantly funny comedy about sisterhood, as five very different women struggle hilariously to conquer pole dancing in order to raise money for a breast cancer charity. A poignant and uplifting comedy, The Naked Truth is a call to all women, celebrating strength through adversity. As Eleanor Roosevelt said ‘women are like tea bags, you don’t know how strong they are until you put them in hot water’. If you were touched by Calendar Girls and amused by the manoeuvres of Stepping Out you'll be splitting your sides and moved to tears by The Naked Truth. It’s a show for women, about women, that men absolutely must see (if they dare!). After winning the BBC’s I’ll Do Anything and following an acclaimed performance in Calamity Jane, Jodie Prenger now steps into Andrew Lloyd Webber and don Black’s classic musical, Tell Me on a Sunday. The musical follows the romantic misadventures of a young English girl in New York in the heady days of the 1980s. We start off brimming with optimism, as our starlet seeks success and love. But, as she weaves her way through the maze of the city and her own anxieties, frustrations and heartaches, she begins to wonder whether she's been looking for love in all the wrong places. This iconic musical, with a wonderful original score, features the chart-topping Take That Look Off Your Face and, of course, the title track Tell Me on a Sunday. West Germany, 1969. Charismatic Willy Brandt has been elected Chancellor. When Brandt ‘dares more democracy’, his own party conspires, plots and tries to destroy him. As his enemies tighten the noose around his neck, Brandt believes the only man he can truly trust is Gunter Guillaume, his devoted personal assistant. But in the world of political intrigue, espionage and betrayal, is anyone to be trusted? Shakespearean in scale but with all the twists and spins of modern politics, democracy combines the fascination of a John Le Carré thriller with the dynamism of The West Wing and House of Cards. Witty, thought-provoking and highly entertaining, democracy is a compelling and unmissable night at the theatre. A chance wrong number looking for a sex chat-line rings into the office and gives them a great idea...“Why not run a Sex Chat Line?” After all, their age and appearance won’t matter on the telephone and providing they can keep this a secret from their boss... they could be onto a winner! arIlD anDersen trIo WIth tommY smIth & Paolo VInaCCIa The fabulous singing tone and exciting articulation of Arild Andersen’s double bass playing have made the Norwegian master one of the key figures in European jazz. Chick Corea, Stan Getz, don Cherry, Sonny Rollins, pat Metheny and John Scofield are among the giants whose rhythm sections have featured Andersen’s magical presence and sure sense of time. Widely regarded as one of the finest groups currently working in jazz, Andersen’s trio with the Scottish saxophone virtuoso Tommy Smith and the sensational Italian drummer paolo Vinaccia presents music that thrills and moves the listener in equal measure. drop-dead gorgeous melodies, razor-sharp interaction, urgent rhythms and the hallmark of all great jazz, spontaneous creativity, converge in a live music experience that transcends style and genre and makes an Arild Andersen Trio concert an unmissable event. www.arildandersen.com PAGE 18

PUPPet state theatre ComPanY Presents

leaF BY nIGGle By J.R.R. Tolkien With a soundtrack composed by karine Polwart and Michael John McCarthy Niggle is a painter. Not a very successful one, partly because he has so many other things to do. For some time he has been obsessed with one particular canvas – a curious picture of a tree with a vast landscape stretching out behind it. The painting keeps getting bigger and bigger, but Niggle has a journey to make. He doesn’t want to go, but he cannot get out of it… In 1939 Tolkien was despairing of ever bringing his great work The Lord of the Rings to a conclusion. One morning he woke up with Leaf by Niggle complete in his mind and wrote it down. Surrounded by ladders, bicycles, easels and heirlooms, Richard Medrington (Jean from The Man Who Planted Trees) recounts Tolkien’s miniature masterpiece, with a soundtrack composed by Karine polwart and Michael John McCarthy. With thanks to the Tolkien Trust.

James Grant A welcome return visit to Carnegie Hall, after three years away, from the former Love and Money frontman. This acoustic performance showcases James’ Al Green-inflected soul ballads that rub shoulders with radio-friendly rock and contemporary folk classics. delight in the shimmering melodies and virtuoso solos that he plucks effortlessly from his guitar plus the sweet sorrow of lost love and lasting hope echoed in ‘lyrics good enough to be poetry.’ This once wannabe guitar hero, who was also blessed with velvet vocal chords, has grown up to be one of the great Scottish songwriters of recent decades. James has written several hit singles, racked up silver disc sales and created a devoted world-wide fanbase. He has performed or toured with artists as diverse as U2, Nanci Griffiths, Tina Turner, and BB King and continues to write and perform as a solo artist; it is a great pleasure to welcome him to Carnegie Hall this Summer. “one of Scotland’s most gifted songwriters… and what a marvellous singer he is, too, spanning darkly burnished baritone depths and searing soulful intensity.” Scotsman

THE GLASGOW BOYS A SPIRIT OF REBELLION 28 May – 4 September I Free Linked by friendship and a shared desire to rebel against the artistic traditions of late 19th century Scotland, the Glasgow Boys became one of the most significant groups of painters working in Britain at that time. A loose association of around 20 artists, many of them went on to enjoy critical acclaim and commercial success, both at home and abroad. The exhibition looks at the evolving style of the Glasgow Boys and their impact on the art world. Included are works from our collection by leading members of the group and many others associated with it, including Arthur Melville, John Lavery, E A Hornel, George Henry, James Guthrie, Joseph Crawhall, E A Walton, Alexander Roche and Thomas Corsan Morton.
