Darkly comic Irish thriller. During confession one Sunday, an unseen local informs Father James of his plan of killing him as a way of gaining retribution for abuse he suffered as a young boy at the hands of another Catholic priest. Left with only seven days to make his peace, James visits those within his community while trying to track down his potential killer. Through his exchanges with the locals, which include a cuckolded butcher, a wealthy businessman and an atheistic doctor – James realises that the institution to which he has dedicated his life is becoming obsolete, causing him to doubt the validity of his faith.

Oscar-winning documentary exploring the often neglected role of backing singers in rock and roll history. Tracing the stories of artists such as Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer and Tata Vega from the heyday of rock and roll to the present day, the film endeavours to bring to the fore musicians whose voices adorn many of the most famous songs in pop history yet remain largely unknown. With artists such as Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley often employing African-Americans to provide their backing vocals, the film also highlights the importance of these singers as trailblazers for a more inclusive musical mainstream – though the individuals themselves never quite made it to centre-stage.

Directed by Richard Ayoade Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Chris O’Dowd

Richard Ayoade’s (The IT Crowd and Submarine) adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novella about a man who goes insane after the appearance of his doppelgänger. Quiet, unassuming office employee Simon goes unnoticed at work, is ridiculed by his own mother and lacks the confidence to attract the attention of his dream girl Hannah. His new colleague James is Simon’s double in appearance but is his exact opposite in terms of personality, being full of confidence and charisma. When James begins to take over his life, Simon’s mental health becomes increasingly fragile. “…blackly comic… a true original” EMPIRE
