If you were to be asked by someone if they should move to Ballito, what would your answer be? I know it’s a difficult question to answer because living somewhere gives you a different perspective to being on holiday there. My sense is that you’d find yourself a little cynical and inclined to tell those asking the question more about what is wrong with Ballito rather than focusing on all the things that are great. It’s not a bad thing to be realistic, but I think we’ve got to get back to having a real, tangible passion for Ballito. Part of our success here on the North Coast has been our love and passion for the place we call home. That pride in our town adorns and embellishes our conversations with others and it puts Ballito on a pedestal when we upload pictures on Facebook or Twitter, or whatever other social network

What would I say to someone wanting to move here? I’ve been fortunate enough to have the question asked of me on the odd occasion. I always take time to reflect on my previous life in Johannesburg before I answer – then I answer, sometimes long-windedly, from the heart with a passion for the place I now call home, peppering my answer with a few sanity checks along the way to balance my “sales pitch before offering an open hand and heart to help if the move is made. I do it like that because it’s sort of how I was welcomed a little while back. I love Ballito, and I wouldn’t think twice about telling people how great it is to live here. I hope that you feel that same about your town! God Bless Justin

Ballito

investing in people

The ability to touch hearts and change lives happens when people and businesses reach out to those less fortunate than themselves in a way that helps develop, nurture and find ways to leave a legacy. Sometimes those efforts go unseen but their impact is life changing. Fortunately for us the heartfelt efforts happen right here in Kwadukuza on a daily basis through a collaborative partnership between the RedCap Foundation, RedCap Sport and our own Kwadukuza Municipality. So why has RedCap Foundation decided on Kwadukuza? Nationally the RedCap Foundation has a dream to educate and empower future generation to become inspired, healthy, engaged and responsible citizens, capable of bringing about necessary social change and building a positive society. To truly make this difference in young lives though, RedCap believe that partnerships are essential to help deliver real, sustainable results and they have embraced the highly successful partnership already developed with Kwadukuza Municipality around the Mr Price Pro Ballito surfing event to keep going and implement their community focused projects. “Our partnership with

8

Kwadukuza has been able to achieve a far greater impact than we ever could alone.” says Natasja Ambrosio, Mr Price Group’s Business Sustainability Manager. Working closely with the Department of Education’s Ilembe District office and the local Kwadukuza Municipality two education projects have already been introduced and are producing results. The RedCap Schools Project aimed at transforming five primary schools in the area through helping to building a culture of excellence with the goal of improving the performance of learners. The second, the Young Heroes project, introduced a programme focused on implementing structured physical education and sport at schools and has successfully reached 8 schools and impacted positively on 8000 children so far. “Our partnership with the municipality is one of a kind and sets a benchmark on how local government can engage with business to improve the lives of people in their community. We partner together and invest collectively to drive change for children in Kwadukuza.” adds Natasja. RedCap and Kwadukuza have also implemented Jumpstart, a project in direct

response to the national challenge of youth unemployment. Lack of experiential training plays a major role in the growing number of unemployed youth in our country, and more specifically in our district and the JumpStart project aims to provide a “jump start” to the youth of Kwadukuza in order to help them gain much needed skills to access the job market. On the eve of the 2010 World Cup Kick off in KwaDukuza was also founded in the region. The Mr Price Kwadukuza Soccer League started with a short knock-out cup and has grown into a full soccer league that takes place over 16 weekends. Today 17 high schools in Kwadukuza are actively involved in this league and benefit from the positive spin offs of the league. There are many people doing great work here on the North Coast to help improve the lives of others. With partnerships like the one between Kwadukuza and RedCap we can be sure that we have sincere people vested, and able, to change lives and brings smiles to those that need it most while they help us build a legacy that will be remembered.

Every year we are amazed at the growth and development of the North Coast, surprised at the entrepreneurial spirit and are in awe of those people who help improve life in and around our town. This year we take a look at what the focus seems to be for the year ahead and what might be on the cards for Ballito.

19

Ballito

Anthony Robbins says, “It is in your moments of decisions made daily that your destiny is shaped”. I believe this inspiring quote allows us to realise that our future, pretty much unwritten, is shaped by the decisions we make today, here and now. Here on the North Coast many of us wonder what lies ahead for the year as we look to embrace opportunities that will arise, as well as prepare for a few challenges that will test our tenacity and character — either way we are ready and our destiny is determined by our daily decisions and behaviour. So, what is new for 2012? What projects and initiatives will rock Ballito this year and see us once again catapulted ahead of all the other towns and cities competing nationally for tourism, investment and exposure? This year appears to be a year in which residents, local investors and business owners are focused on

20

consolidation and stability — this means that the year ahead seems to have fewer major projects planned and, rather, more attention focused on getting things refined while focusing on the basics. Although some may say that last year was tough, for Ballito and the North Coast it was a year of new and exciting stuff. We saw the Lifestyle Centre complete an extension that changed the landscape of the Ballito ridge and, when Tiffany’s was completed, it offered a whole new shopping destination to Salt Rock residents. With so much happening in 2011 it was inevitable that 2012 was to be a quieter year with people of the North Coast looking to make those big projects implemented in 2011 work for them. Speaking to the iLembe Chamber of Commerce CEO, Trenley Tilbrook, about what’s new in 2012, the answer was the same. The chamber itself will also look

to building on the successes of the previous year by focusing on the detailed operations, consolidating activities that add value for its members and by carefully evaluating new initiatives that might spread them too thin. Trenley tells us that the chamber is positive about 2012, both as an organization and in the district. While the world embraces all things technical and gadgety, the same seems to apply to the North Coast. With a host of websites offering different information to residents, two new online businesses are also being launched right here, in the heart of Ballito. The first is a strong service that will look to change the way commercial property is marketed. Comproperty.co.za will launch early this year, focusing on both local and national commercial property sales and rentals. It is backed by a significant player with a depth of knowledge in that area. The second online business, www.gaudiumclub. com, delivers a completely different shopping experience, with luxury products and lifestyle events, to online consumers. With access to exceptional product offers and event packages, both locally and internationally, Gaudium Club will soon offer high street shopping to its online members. There are also has several amazing business parks in the Ballito Business Park behind the Lifestyle Centre and we already know of a few businesses that have signed leases and will be opening new, exciting businesses and facilities for the residents of the North Coast. Ballito Gymnastics is getting ready to open its doors soon and will offer a whole new world of twisting and tumbling for the younger generation on the North Coast. A new fabric shop is also set to open soon. Already an established business in Cape Town, the KZN branch will be based in Ballito itself and will service the entire KZN market directly out of our great town. These are just two of several businesses that are taking the bold step of opening in Ballito and bringing new, fresh and innovative ideas, services and products to people here. Perhaps most importantly for 2012 as we look at

what is new, is for us to really focus on supporting local businesses in whatever way we can. We’re really fortunate to have so many business-minded people who believe in the area and we should continue supporting them as best as we can. 2012 will also see the return of a few favourites that have made their mark here in Ballito and put our little town on the map. The Mr Price Pro Ballito surf event is again set to rock Ballito this year. The event has grown in size and stature every year and last year’s international ASP event was touted as one of the best that year. The team behind the brilliant surfing event, and who can forget the rock concerts on Salt Rock Beach, are already planning this year’s event and are set to blow us away once again. Nikki and Leanne, founders of the Prawn and Jazz Festival, will once again present this great event, this year from the Seaton Delaval estate. Moved to a little later in 2012, the event will take advantage of Ballito’s fine spring weather over the weekend of 28-30 September and will host awesome entertainment during the holidays. We’ll also see the return of the popular Miss Ballito competition later in the year as we look to crown Miss Ballito 2012 in a ceremony that sees Ballitoites don their finest in a grand finale. These events showcase what’s great about life here on the North Coast and it really is promising to see them returning. Each of these events also seem to tie into what is a more focused, consolidated approach to getting things done this year and, while they aren’t new, they are definitely bigger and better each year. So, no new skyscraper buildings or Eiffel Towers...yet. It seems that what’s new this year is all about our attitudes to our town, our lifestyle and the way we do business and by all indications 2012 is going to bring a strong, stable and perhaps even new way of doing things to the North Coast.

inspiring business couple! Jackie and Owen Williams are an established, successful and extremely positive couple. As a thriving business couple they have invested a piece of themselves in their hotel, hotel Izulu, and in their presence in Ballito. Their outlook on life, whether it is business or personal, is to be admired. We got to catch up. and be inspired, by this energetic and entrepreneurial couple. Tell us a bit about yourselves and your backgrounds that people might not know? Both Owen and I were born and bred in England. After school I studied beauty therapy and then moved to Germany. During that time Owen had a successful career with IBM and after leaving went on to start up his own high tech security company. Two years after I moved back to the UK I met Owen at his favourite local pub and we just seemed to connect. Prior to our meeting, Owen had travelled to South Africa and stayed at the Zimbali Lodge where he was so taken by the setting of the North Coast and what it offered that he decided to invest in property there. So when he met me the idea of a romantic trip to South Africa to

stay at his Zimbali home sounded great. I, of course, fell in love with the whole package - the estate, the town and South Africa in general and so after quite a bit of commuting between the two countries we made the decision to move to Ballito permanently in 2002. Once settled in S.A we started thinking about what we should do to keep ourselves busy. At that time there wasn’t a Lifestyle Centre or any of the fancy restaurants we have here today, so we had the idea of opening a fine dining restaurant as both Owen and I have experience in the restaurant and catering industry and we both have a passion for food, dining and, of course, fine wine. While deciding on the property that now houses Hotel Izulu we realised there was too much space for just a restaurant and so we thought about going for a restaurant with rooms where you can stay over, such as they have in France. From there, new thoughts seemed to just evolve, we added wedding facilities and then one of my friends said, “Well, you must have a spa”, which we agreed was a must and went for it. We were fortunate that it managed to become a Gold Spa almost straight after opening, one of only nine in the whole of S.A., and it just grew from there.

When deciding on the actual design of the hotel we drew on our experience of all the travelling we had done and all the hotels we had stayed in, making sure we had those things that stood out for us as different and extraordinary. We also knew what didn’t work and what we should instinctively stay away from. It was our experiences that really created the blue print for the hotel. Some people say that the first rule in business is to never work with family, but you two seem to do it very well. What’s your secret? Owen and I have a different connection having both been in previous relationships and we went into this relationship saying, “You know what — let’s just have fun and enjoy each other!” We really take pleasure in each other’s company and find that our thoughts are similar and perhaps more interestingly, aligned. We also love doing things together, no matter what time of day it is. I don’t think our relationship and partnership would work for everybody and I suppose it comes down to what kind of relationship you have. Owen and I are best friends; we complement each other and are very similar in our ways. A big part of what makes us work so well as a couple and in business is that we respect and listen to each other

and we both want to make each other happy — there is no hierarchy in the relationship. How do you manage to keep work life and home life separate? I think that’s where people get it wrong! When you are a couple working together, your work is your life, and if it’s not a part of your life both at home and at work then you aren’t really passionate about it. We’re also fortunate in that we see work as more of a hobby — we get to come to this beautiful hotel and be a part of special memories created for our guests. Working together also means you get things done a little quicker since you can chat about something topical and make a decision whenever suits you both – you don’t have to wait for normal office hours. How do you remain successful in an industry that thrives on holiday seasons and a stable economic climate? In a sense we are lucky in that the way we designed the hotel ensured that we wouldn’t have to rely on just one source of revenue — we have multiple businesses within the hotel; these include the spa, conference centre, wedding venue, restaurant and rooms. It does make a difference, but it is always a challenge, so you have got to keep trying new things to get people interested.

We are currently involved in a local partnership called the Best of KZN, Destinations of Distinction. Eight destinations have joined forces to help promote each other’s hotels and resorts to visitors travelling in and around South Africa. The hotels are the Saint James on Venice, Duma Manzi Eco Lodge and Spa, Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, Fugitives’ Drift, Pakamisa, Thanda Private Game Lodge, Makaranga and of course Hotel Izulu. Each one of these places are unique and fabulous and the owners are all such outstanding and interesting people that it just makes it so easy to collaborate with them on this project. When approaching life and business what principles do you live by? We just tend to enjoy ourselves and see the positive in situations rather than always picking out the minor negatives. Happiness is often the key to success. It allows you to grow and prosper; when you’re unhappy you seem to fall into a state of, “I can’t do anything” and aren’t open to new ideas and growth. We believe you should never stop trying new things as you can never stop learning, especially in an industry that deals with so many different cultures and people. It’s an exciting but challenging feat, but you end up gaining so much experience and knowledge. What vision do you have for Hotel Izulu in 2012? Right now everyone in the hospitality industry is working hard to remain sustainable; we have a very unstable market, so the main objective

is to keep getting through it and remain afloat. This year, much like every year, we will be looking to raise occupancy. We’ve done well in the hotel but we would like to fill a few more of those beds through the year! In saying that, we are not going to be lowering the standards or quality that people have come to associate with Hotel Izulu just to get a few more feet through the door. Driving awareness is always a must, not just about the hotel but the other amenities we offer here as well. What makes your hotel unique? To put it simply, we are just different! We are a 5-star hotel, the only independent one in the area, but we are not pretentious. Our guests are not made to feel that they have to wear their very best when dining — they are given the options of unique personal dining experiences such as our cellar and kitchen dining, or they can eat outside by the pool under the stars or inside in a calm, relaxed environment. Our menu is well-researched and appeals to both local and international guests, which is extremely hard to do, but in the end people get what they want and appreciate it. Our rooms are personalised, which gives them a little bit more character and ambiance. We have three resident pets —two dogs and a cat —walking around and our guests seem to absolutely love playing with them. Their presence adds to a more relaxed atmosphere; we feel this allows people to truly “wind down”. There are numerous “little things” that you think wouldn’t mean much but leave an everlasting impression

in the minds of our guests that keeps them coming back, such as the free car-wash on the day of their departure. You have an amazing wedding venue and must have some really touching stories. Care to share any? When we first opened eight years ago we had a local family visit the hotel and, at the end of their visit, their 11-year-old daughter came up to us and we will never forget the excitement in her eyes as she said with conviction in her voice, “When I grow up I want to get married here!”. It was adorable but we never took it that seriously, after all she was just 11. Eight years down the line that same ambitious little girl, now all grown up, came back to us to have her dream wedding. For us it is so moving that what we offer is something that people actually dream of using for one of the most important days in their lives. Quick facts! Favourite place to eat breakfast? At home, in bed looking out at the gorgeous sea. Favourite place to eat dinner? Bel Punto Favourite beach? Zimbali Beach — it’s quiet and secluded. Favourite thing about working the hotel industry? People are generally in a happy place when they go on holiday and therefore you are always surrounded by happy people. Favourite place to holiday? Seychelles, Mavi Coast

Chris & Kelly Ainslie Married: 20 April 2002 Marriage is a journey of high mountains, deep valleys, smooth paths and sometimes rocky ones. But we can honestly say it is the most exciting journey we have ever had. Still so happy!!! Love is not some nebulous feeling that is difficult to explain, but rather a very real and raw emotion that is felt to the very core of who you are. It is a journey of exhilarating highs and rocky lows and it is also the most exciting and rewarding adventure we have been on. We were best friends for a few years before realising that we had fallen in love; we dated for three years after this and then married at the age of 21. One of the underlying principles that is a huge factor in making our marriage work

is our friendship. We are best friends and we have a marriage and family that is largely based on the foundation of our friendship. Getting married as young as we did has meant that we have grown up together in so many ways. A happy marriage doesn’t just happen; it requires hard work and commitment. We have been through tough times, but we truly feel that our underlying deep friendship has pulled us through. Marriage is not for sissies! We believe that communication is very important for a happy marriage. We communicate well and we’re open with our thoughts and feelings which allows us to have our collective fingers on the pulse of our marriage. One can never

underestimate the value of this. That’s not to say that this is easy and we all get caught up in life from time to time, but we try not to be complacent and to ensure that we make time to reconnect. A marriage that lasts is one that is built on mutual respect for each other as individuals and a deep understanding of one another. We give each other space to live our lives and pursue our dreams. One can’t be selfish, yet one doesn’t need to be when both of you understand and allow for the other’s needs. We are privileged to be celebrating our 10th anniversary and we love each other more now than we did the day we married. We look forward to the years ahead on this exciting adventure!

Chris & Louisa Goble Married: 20 September 1986 What an honour to be asked to share our thoughts on celebrating 25 years of marriage! We are the classic example of “opposites attract”, comically expressed by our daughter as “you are the macaroni, Mom, and Dad the cheese on top”!

Cyril & Sylvie Hardy Married: 1 June 1950 Tribute from their granddaughter, Lauren Richards If you could bottle the secret of their successful marriage, this couple is one that you should turn to for advice — Sylvie and Cyril Hardy are a testimony to true love and they are an inspiration to both young and old.

Knowing one another well when we married was a big plus. We had a high school crush and I still have letters from Chris which we exchanged in the seventies when we were boarding at Michaelhouse and Oakford Priory respectively. When we married in 1986 we had known one another for 10 years and had dated for almost five of those. Marrying into a large family which has worked together in the sugar farming industry in Upper Tongaat since 1870 has meant that we spend a lot of time with family. One of the strengths of our marriage is that we both value and embrace our extended families. Being opposites, we have often had to agree to disagree, but we share the same core values in life and, crucially, the same beliefs about raising a family. Chris being a farmer meant that we were both very involved in raising the children. We completely supported one another in the way we brought up our children and

They met in 1945/6 in Durban and were friends for two or three years before Cyril began to court Sylvie. They were married in a true 50s-style wedding on 1 June 1950, with Sylvie a glowing bride and Cyril the proud, handsome groom and they have been happily married ever since. It does almost seem as if they fall more in love by the day. They moved to the North Coast where Cyril, a fitter and turner by trade, turned farmer / entrepreneur. Here they lived a truly happy South African life on a farm with their five children, Anita, Paul, Linda, Edward and Rosemary. They moved to Ballito approximately 20 years ago and are an amazingly spritely couple (who put most of us to shame). They are true soul mates, lucky enough to have found the one who will stick by you through all the ups and downs of life, through everything that gets thrown at you, through sadness and loss, and through

Megan and Ian (currently 6th year medical and 4th year engineering students) enriched our marriage, which was cemented by our combined commitment to them. We have allowed one another the freedom to pursue our own hobbies and interests and Chris supported my passion for teaching when I returned to the profession. Besides both working hard, we have precious travel memories and have shared many fun times. A common core of very loyal friends has strengthened our marriage and we have happily socialized together as whole family units over the years. Now, as the children have virtually flown the nest, we look forward to this new phase in our marriage! For the young couples out there – no, marriage is not a bed of roses! There are lots of little hidden thorns and pruning that will have to be done along the way. As with anything worthwhile in life, it takes hard work and commitment to achieve success in anything. But nothing beats knowing you have someone at your side who loves you unconditionally.

the joy of great-grandchildren and the love of a family who cherish you. They are not only amazing people — strong, happy and healthy — but they are emotionally strong and are the glue which holds our enormous family together! They are one of the few couples I know who still hold hands, who kiss and cuddle and it is such an inspiration to see that love can endure and flourish over 62 years! They share a love of good wine (as do all true French Mauritians!), food and family get-togethers. They have been to pretty much every destination worldwide that anyone could wish to travel to — they really have lived their lives and their marriage to the fullest. I cannot even begin to tell you how much I admire my grandparents. They have what I think every couple strives for — true love and a loving companion for life.

words Lisa Opperman & Caryn Pottas – Sensuous Intimacy Boutique

LOVE

IS IN THE AIR Five “Passion Keepers”

Marriage is a place where we should be celebrating romance continuously and not just on one special occasion. Sadly, many couples have lost that “loving feeling” altogether. So how do we build a strong, loving and passionate marriage? Attitude – attitude is the most vital aspect of any marriage. Your attitude will determine whether you have a great marriage or not. A good attitude says, “I understand it’s not just ‘me’ but always ‘we’. A healthy attitude understands that it’s never a 50/50 split down the middle; it’s a full 100 percent commitment. A positive attitude will always influence closeness and growth in the relationship. Communication – how we communicate in marriage is crucial. It’s no great surprise that men and women communicate differently. The great example, “I have nothing to wear”, can mean completely different things, depending on your gender. For a woman, this statement can mean, “I need to lose some weight”, “Nothing fits me”, “My clothes are out of date”, or “I need a new wardrobe”. For a man this statement simply means, “I have no clean clothes”! Communication goes even further. Not only do we communicate differently but we also communicate love differently. This is best highlighted in Gary Chapman’s bestseller, The Five Love Languages. We all have a primary love language in which we demonstrate our love and, more importantly, how we need to be loved. The love languages are identified as Affirmation, Acts of Service, Quality Time, Gifts and Physical Touch. By learning and understanding your spouse’s primary love language you become effective in communicating love to him/her.

38

“If couples gave their investments and bank accounts the same attention as their marriages, many would end up bankrupt”. Time and investment – life is fast and furious, so it’s imperative that couples prioritise their marriages. We can so easily place our children or careers ahead of the marriage. If couples gave their investments and bank accounts the same attention as their marriages, many would end up bankrupt. The best investment you can give your children is investing in your marriage. Take “time out” for date nights, walks, long

bubble-baths or whatever floats your boat. Couples need to understand that 18+ years is a long time to wait for their children to grow up and to “find” each other again. Fun and Laughter – marriages can be a battle of the “Wills” or the “Sexes”, a place of sheer misery rather than Utopia. We forget how to have fun and laugh. When last did you do something crazy or unexpected? Send your spouse an SMS saying, “You’re the hottest thing alive” or tell him, “Honey, that shirt makes you look so sexy!” Flirting is a wonderful way of bringing fun back into the marriage. Tolerance – a marriage is where we need to implement tolerance, grace and forgiveness in great measure. The greatest challenge is to understand that we can’t change our spouses, no matter how good our intentions are. Stop trying to “fix” your partner; rather make positive changes within yourself. The way you choose to respond and react will influence your spouse.

Get in touch with your

Creative side!!! Ballito’s best Arts and craft shops

A new year brings new content, new ideas and once again we are looking for new innovative shops in Ballito that offer a little bit of a difference, a great time for the family and of course a fabulous day out – this edition we decided to focus on arts and craft shops in town, as creativity and art is often a great outlet for expressing ones negative energy! We went to Calicos and Scrapbook avenue to find out what it is about them that makes them a creative haven and why it is a must visit for both locals and holiday guests alike. Calicos Calicos was conceived by two women who are passionate about crafting. We both have different crafting skills and the combination of these skills has resulted in a store where almost nothing is impossible! Our vision was to create a space where “beautiful things” could be

40

created. We believe every woman has a creative spark in her – it just needs to be nurtured and explored.

Invitations for hen parties, baby showers, birthday parties etc, as well as envelopes can be custom designed.

Calicos was created not only to serve the crafting needs of the community but also to offer a wonderful, friendly, welcoming place for all crafters to sit and relax in a beautiful space whilst being creative and learning new crafting techniques. Coffee, cupcakes and champagne is often involved!

We have custom made jewellery and will make that unique piece you need. We carry a small but beautiful range of freshwater pearls, gemstones and crystals.

We offer classes and product for Scrapbooking, Beading, Mixed Media, Card Making, Decoupage, Mosaics, Ceramic Painting and lots more. Our ribbon collection is one of the best on the North Coast. Want something different? We offer bespoke handmade Wedding Invitations and Table Favours for that very special day.

We are involved in designing and handcrafting window and table décor for local boutiques and restaurants. SCRAPBOOK AVENUE Since its inception in 2003, SCRAPBOOK AVENUE has become a household name locally and is it a well established and known arts and crafts shop servicing not just the local community but hundreds of regular visitors from all over the country. It has always been my aim to present our community with the latest arts and crafts trends and to not only stock the products of a large number of arts and crafts, but to also give classes and workshops in all these. In order to keep up with all the crafty trends, I often visit the top arts and crafts shows and where possible get training with the top divas in the country. I regularly invite and host the top TV Celebrity crafters in the country to present workshops at the shop. Not only are we the only Pewter Art Academy Agent in KZN, but also present high quality and unique classes in pewter, decoupage, beading, multimedia, mosaic, card making and fine art. As a scrapbook designer, I have had enormous amount of training with South African and American scrap booking artists and my designs are well known and sought after in both the shop and online. We have established

and are now well known for our bead jewelry and designs as well as the repairing of such. Another specialty of our shop is the huge variety of paper for card making, be it for weddings or other occasions. We have recently started a small gallery section at our shop. There is an enormous amount of talent in the Ballito area and the aim of our little gallery is to show some of their incredible works of art. There is an open invitation to the locals to participate in this project of ours. As owner, Es De Swardt, it is my aim and objective to welcome our visitors and clients with warmth and expertise, to be competitive price wise, to stock an interesting variety of goods and to grow at the same pace as the village of Ballito. To book for workshops, we invite you to contact us in our shop or to phone us at the contact details below. Ballito restaurant review

olive and oil Mediterranean restaurant An Exceptional night out! We were invited to experience Olive and Oil restaurant and do a restaurant review, we are by no means food critiques or food professionals, but we are food lovers and therefore happily took up the offer! This evening also ran with a wine tasting done by Spier Wines, I must admit, I love Wine and food pairing evenings, where food is paired with correct wines per meal. It is fantastic and very informative; you also get to truly appreciate the difference in wines and foods when paired properly. On an average evening, most couples or families cannot order a bottle of wine per food course, for one it is costly and 2) a drive home would be out of the question!! So this is THE perfect option... Olive and oil is a real treat!! Looking at the menu, it infuses a Mediterranean mix of Greek, Moroccan and Italian foods. The variety in the Olive and Oil menu ensure there is something catering to the needs

Real Life For Kids Creating a brighter future for the future!

We recently found out about this amazing new game from Ashton International College called, Real Life for kids. Local Ballito School Ashton has been playing it for 3 years and has found it a complimentary and fun addition to their curriculum for their grade 6’s. So we decided to visit the creators of this insightful senior primary game, Graeme Waite, who happens to also be deputy head of Umhlanga College, and his wife Jackie Waite and delve into the ‘in’s and out’s’ of it. They explained that the game is a technological, educational and entrepreneurial game that incorporates a life skills programme which encourages children to come to school and shows them that learning can in fact be fun. Graeme originally played a form of the game with a colleague in Johannesburg which was a much simpler version of the game they have created today. After playing it with his former school in Johannesburg he realised that the game had the potential to be a great addition to the school curriculum. He brought it with him to Umhlanga College, where both parents and students raved about it, paving the way for it to be further developed. The inspiration for the game was the fact that there was a large gap in the schooling system that the curriculum wasn’t taking care of. Most kids that come out of school,

44

or even college for that matter, have no idea about life skills — even simple things like making EFTs, writing cheques, medical aid, insurance and so on. When you leave school and/or complete your tertiary education you are pretty much left to figure these out by yourself or, worse, have to go to your parents and say, “Please help me”. Real Life for Kids is a brilliant game that teaches the basic life skills that school doesn’t teach you. Much like the world we live in, money is the most important factor in the game — for the kids, money is the new gold star. As an incentive to work hard, the children are paid every week for coming to school and doing good things. Conversely, if they don’t come to school, they don’t get paid and if they are naughty, they are fined and have to pay the teacher the sum of the fine, which is a great motivator as no one likes to lose money! Every child has to pay for bus fare for the week unless they pay to write their driver’s licence (an adaption of the normal learner’s test, but simpler). They are charged for medical costs if they are sick, dentist’s costs if they have to go to the dentist, etc. There are also different roles in the game that each child gets a chance to play, such as bus conductor, policeman, doctor and journalist. One child gets to be the Mayor for the year and is chosen on how well he performs with his election speech and PowerPoint presentation. Whatever happens in real life

affects the game as well — the petrol price went up at the beginning of February so, therefore, the bus fares will go up until the price comes down again. The game demonstrates how every subject in school comes into play in real life by using it in a practical way in the game. One example is the importance of English when you have to run for mayor, you have to write a formal speech, which you are taught to do in English lessons. Computers play a very important part in the game as the kids have to learn how to carry out internet banking and put together professional PowerPoint presentations. Art enables you to design your election poster and build your houses to put on the board. When it’s your turn to be a journalist, you have to learn how to be an accurate reporter and your grammar and spelling have to be right. Geography comes into play when the kids have to decide how the town is to be planned and where they want to build, because there is a sewage works at one corner of the town and therefore the value of properties in that part of the town will be less. If the children get full marks for a test, they get the value of the mark in money as an incentive to get good marks. With the money the children have earned they then have to purchase land in the town and then purchase (build) a house. They get money back if they make their houses out of recyclable products (green points). The students then have to put out tenders for different parts of the

“It’s like Monopoly on steroids!” city where, they have to build the various parts of a city in groups, such as, an airport, game reserve and a hospital etc. Once the city has been built up and the year is coming to an end, the teacher buys everything back at an increased value — from the land to the property and even the medical insurance. Once all the children’s investments have been bought back, at an increased value, they get taxed. A range of certificates are available and presented to every child in the game, which include the top children for the different aspects of the game. Umhlanga College, for example, has been able to link up with Deloitte for R500 gift vouchers for each of the winners which are then handed out at the annual prize giving. Over time the game has changed dramatically. Graeme and Jackie have worked tirelessly to make it more technological as it is easier for both teachers and children to connect this way these days. The web based functionality allows schools to buy the game at a much cheaper price as well as being a lot more effective, educational and efficient. How it works is that if you are a member-school you are able to log onto the website that is exclusively for the game and you can download and print all the necessary game documents. All payments from teacher to student and vice versa are either done by cheque or EFT and go into their setup “bank accounts”. The couple have also developed

new boards that are an improvement on the original papier maché boards which they had to make themselves. The new boards are a lot more durable as they are made of plastic from three separate pieces that are joined together with magnets. The game is really affordable for schools and teaches kids vitally important life lessons. For schools incorporating the game into the curriculum, the game is a major marketing tool and can be a real draw card for prospective students. Graeme is passionate about what he calls “his baby” and the couple hope to see the game in at least 100 schools in three years’ time. It is currently being used in 14 schools all over S.A and they anticipate seeing that number rise to 40 this year. Oprah Winfrey’s academy is coming to see the game as a potential buyer, which is a great accomplishment and shows that the game has a voice and that it’s being heard by others! As the game is very much web-based, it does require the school to have Internet access, but for those schools that don’t have readily available internet access for the students they do have another paper-based version, although this is, unfortunately, a little bit more expensive. But in the end you can’t put a price on a good education! I was thoroughly impressed by what I saw and heard. I only wish that it had come out sooner because it is truly fantastic and an exceptional concept. I can definitely see great things in the future for Real Life for Kids and I am excited to see the new brighter minds that it nurtures. I believe that every school should seriously think about investing in the game as it would be a shame to deprive anyone of such an entertaining and innovative education. Graeme and Jackie, we wish you the best of luck with your venture and hope to see it blossom like the young minds it is affecting.

Salon Sharona When I heard that I would be doing a review at Salon Sharona in Ballito Bay Mall, I really didn’t expect what I received — the experience was beyond incredible! Walking into the salon, we were greeted with warm smiles even before the staff knew who we were. They ushered us in and offered us beverages and delicious snacks. I am told that this is a regular occurrence at Salon Sharona, I believe this fantastic gesture sparks off an everlasting memory in the mind of the client— a memory that will be a deciding factor when it comes to choosing which hair salon to go to next. The staff is extremely warm and welcoming and the atmosphere very relaxing, almost homely. We sat down and chatted to Vicky Chitradon, who part-owns Salon Sharona Ballito. Vicky is passionate about his salon, the art of hairstyling and, most of all, his staff. Chatting to the staff they respectfully agree that both Vicky and his brother are known in the industry as hair colour specialists. The chemistry and general camaraderie between the staff members is incredible - they work together instead of against each other for the sole purpose of making an experience at Salon Sharona an upbeat and memorable one. There is so much about the salon that makes it a draw card for anyone needing their hair done or a pamper session at the in-house beauty salon, Ezulwini, which does everything from massages, mud wraps, facials, mani’s, pedi’s and much more. I was taken to my meet my hairdresser for the day, Wendy. I made clear what I don’t like and then Vicky and Wendy told me what style and colour they thought would look good in my hair. I would generally never give my hairdresser carte blanche, but I honestly felt so secure in their hands that I just agreed. They then offered to do a Brazilian blowout on my hair which is a treatment that actually makes your hair sleek and smooth by taking the frizz away. It also amazingly improves the health and condition of your hair. I was now Excited!

48

They started with my colour which was two-tone colour — dark brown and a lighter brown, which supposedly creates movement, and a few golden blonde streaks. Vicky started getting all the colour equipment together and showed

me the new colour treatment they use from L’Oreal, Inoa. It is much better for your hair and has no ammonia- bonus! This new product has come a far way from traditional colouring products. After that I was given a pedicure at the Ezulwini beauty salon where I relaxed in a massage chair whilst my feet were soaking in a jet set spa. Bernice, my beautician, did a hydrating deluxe pedicure on me which resulted in my feet feeling as soft as a baby’s bottom before using a maroon, red-wine colour on my toes, which she followed through when I had my manicure done. The products they use, Shzen, are fabulous. So my hands and feet were ready for the catwalk, I just had to get my hair finished. After the colour had been washed out I had the Brazilian blowout treatment put on. When the treatment had settled the blow dry and straightening followed, which was when I got to see my colour. My jaw dropped! I was flabbergasted at how amazingly the colours went together and complemented me — the best colour I have ever had! After this it was back to the basin for yet another wash (part of the process). I was then spoiled with a quick deep-cleansing hydroderm facial, in which the product penetrates deep into your skin making your face feel extremely soft and smooth. After all this pampering I had my hair cut and “ironed”. To make a long story short, I looked and felt like a model when I walked out of the salon. It was undoubtedly the best salon experience I have ever had in terms of quality of work, service and all-round experience. To my mind it’s a salon that is striving to be a leader in its field and the staff is doing a great job in achieving that. Thanks you so much, guys, for all that you did. I’ll leave you with this: “MY, MY, MY, SHARONA, you are the Best”

wellness weight loss T’hallel-Yah, Hebrew words for “Praise the Lord”, the new body sculpting salon owned by Adri Labuschagne & Sanet Delport. These aspiring ladies opened their doors late last year, with a real passion for helping people (both woman and men) look and feel better. The salon was decorated with peace and tranquillity in mind; they worked so well together and were so similar in their tastes that they just knew the partnership would work well, “We are a great team” says Adri. I was impressed with this owner managed business; they have a vested interest in YOU which makes a huge difference in the long run. They have quite a bit to offer, the first room is fitted with an i-lipo machine, it is the original UK Manufactured machine, “we chose it because it is the best” says Adri, The i-lipo machine is all about weight loss and a suggested 8 sessions per body area is recommended for best results! However, the key is a healthy diet and regular exercise to maintain the weight loss. How does it work? When calories exceed demand, the extra calories are stored as fat. The fat contents are stored as semi-liquid inclusion in the cytosol of each cell. The i-Lipo emits low levels of laser energy, the fat cell membranes are disrupted releasing intra-celluar fat. This causes the cell to lose its round shape by changing the permeability of the cell membrane. Triglycerides spill out from

the broken cell membranes and are released into the interstitial space where they are slowly transported through the body’s natural metabolic functions, with no adverse physiological effects and are used by the body as an energy source. This mechanism of action is not ‘liquefaction of fat’ rather; it is the instant breakdown of the fat cells also referred to as lypolysis. Here they can also do a body analysis for you, which is very basic but helpful and informative! “We analyze your body composition with state-of-the-art medical equipment, giving you a complete analysis of body fat, water, lean muscle and BMI according to your age, height, weight and ethnic group” says Sanet. After the lipo session it is a 20 min cardio workout. Exercise after treatment creates a demand for energy within the body – a demand that can now be met by the newly released fatty acids and glycerol removing them from the bodies fat storage system. The next room is the toning room where again they have the best machine that really “works” those muscles! Slimline Platinum 24 machine is specifically designed to tighten and tone and get rid of unwanted weight. It has 24 Faradic Electro pads which allow you to do full body padding. It reduces old scar tissue, improving blood circulation, increasing elasticity of muscles and so on. They also have a small sauna room,

&

30 mins of 60 degrees heat, which is surprisingly bearable and relaxing. Their sauna has an infra red light inside it, which has many benefits; so many clients have sworn by the healing properties of the sauna, it is recommended for sport injuries, joint stiffness, stress, muscle spasms, circulation, cellulite, skin conditions, weight loss (burns 900 calories per session) and for removing toxins. Lastly they have a tanning room, where they have the top of the range sun bed, a 10 minute per session tan, the healthy alternative to being brown. This is a “one stop, fat busting and body sculpturing shop” says Sanet. The salon is beautiful and I love the ladies bedside manner, lying rather exposed ( I chose to wear a bikini), they make you feel comfortable. The one thing I found very interesting was when Adri mentioned why so many people have real issues with weight loss and then re-gain, is because it is rather easy to maintain a 12 week eating plan and reach your target weight etc, but fat cells have memory, and the second you start eating normally any excess will again be stored as fat, it is imperative that a low calorie diet is maintained for 8-12months, in that way the fat cells lose their memory to store. All in all – I agree, one stop shop, with a smile on their faces! Tel: 032 5863193 Email: info@thallel-yah.mobi 5 Adam Park, Garlicke Road Ballito

Ballito travel

alot more bang for your buck

words Storm featuring info by Marilyn Steynberg – iTravelsmart

I recently sat down with local travel agent Marilyn Steynberg from iTravelsmart who recently went to Zanzibar and told me about her trip which reminded me about the fantastic family holiday I had there, and I thought about what a great story that would be for our mag!

50

Zanzibar is a magnificent island off Tanzania and one of the best beach holiday destinations on the planet! My family and I were lucky enough to be able to spend a fabulous week’s holiday on this island where the palm trees grow high and coconuts are plentiful, where the cocktails flow, and where great memories are made. On arrival I immediately rushed down to the crystal-clear water outside my stylish bungalow. I had heard that the water is very dense, much like the Dead Sea, and that you are therefore a whole lot more buoyant, basically float like a piece of polystyrene. From a beach and sea point of view, Zanzibar is, for me, miles ahead compared to more commercial beach resorts. I have also been told that diving in this area is hands-down the best place you can go to — it’s almost as if you are diving in an aquarium. Zanzibar offers something for everyone, from deep sea fishing to deep sea diving and much more. The majority of your activities take place at your resort or through your resort. We went bike riding on the beach where we had so much fun that we completely forgot about the time and when we began our journey back to our hotel, it was high tide and we had to manoeuvre our way around cliffs in chest-deep, wavey water with our bicycles. As I am Captain Chaos, it was no surprise that my bike and I went smash into the side

of a rocky cliff. We then decided to climb up a pathway. Having no idea where we were, we just took a slow cruise in a direction we thought would lead to ‘Rome’. We eventually stopped off at one of the villages after some time spent going around in circles and asked where we could find our hotel. That was harder than expected as no one knew what we were saying. So we decided to use our instincts and let the Good Lord show us the way. Four hours later we arrived at our hotel, me with dried blood clumped on my leg but completely exhilarated and content —it was the most amazing experience I have ever had even though the rest of the week people looked at me as if I had been involved in a cage fight... with a dog. Moral of the story? Watch the time when adventuring near rocky cliffs! A few days later my dad and I decided to go on a motorbike ride on the beach. The beaches are amazing; we saw old shipwrecks and quaint traditional fishing boats at anchor. Then there were the fishermen that had just come in after a full day’s fishing pulling out ginormous fish. When we weren’t in awe of what was happening out at sea, we were looking at the land side where there are

big mansions, which are obviously the holiday homes of the rich and famous or politically famous. A couple of metres on there are small clusters of beach houses (almost like a larney squatter camp, without the eye-sore factor). The houses are all made out of wood, banana leaves and palm trees. It was incredible to see such diversity live so close together. The land is so wild and natural and you can truly see that the seaside locals respect their land and what they have been given. You don’t see rubbish lying around, the forests are still intact and the ocean is clean, it truly is paradise. You can easily escape to be at one with nature and witness the beauty of it all. As part of our package we were promised a day out on a traditional dhow. This was like nothing I have ever experienced in my life. The boat is big, beautiful, rustic and wooden — no paint, just a good, quality, handmade boat made like they did it back in the day. We travelled around to all the different islands until we disembarked at one where our guide set up camp and started preparing our lunch. Whilst he was doing that we went exploring this untouched island where wildlife and birdlife are abundant. Giant

baobab trees, with massive branches extending to the floor encompassed the land. We walked along the beach and walked through wave-made arches in massive cliffs. We swam in pristine water out to huge sandbanks where you literally stand in the middle of the sea. We snorkelled and saw a plethora of amazing fish — it was most definitely a family affair to remember. After adventuring for over an hour, we settled down in our little campsite and were welcomed with the freshest seafood feast I have ever tasted. Just being surrounded by the pureness of the island, the wind in your hair and the fresh clean sea breeze engulfing your nostrils was so invigorating. There’s only one word to describe it — magical! Another tourist “must” is a trip into Stone Town, which is now classified as a World Heritage site — it is the cultural heart of Zanzibar, where history has been made and you can see the fallen city. Almost half the population is unemployed, and the highest standard of education for most is a Std 3. In times gone by, wealthy Arabs used to feud over whose house was bigger and grander, so some incredible houses were built. To this day you can spend hours roaming the

streets and alleyways just looking at the most astonishing, intricately designed houses, mosques and bazaars with brass-studded, carved, wooden doors and quality building materials. It is quite something to see this in a city with so many disadvantaged people. You can travel through the town where you are shown the old war ruins and they take you to little nooks and crannies that hold exciting historical memories, and, of course, they have to show you where Freddie Mercury lived.

Zanzibar is rich in spices and fruits, so a spice tour is a definite must-do. The tour is wonderful and gives you a truly “Far Eastern” experience. On the tour we also got to see the old slave market and one of the ruined Sultan’s palaces. Exotic spices and fruits are grown in the plantations just outside Stone Town and you get to test your senses as you taste and smell them and guess what they are. Interesting fact — of the many spices produced, the only spice to be exported is cloves.

The tour of Stone Town takes you to all the market places where you can shop up a storm with great prices as the traders are not trying to attract foreigners as they do on the beaches. They are selling to the locals, so the prices are phenomenal. I have been told that the place to eat in Stone Town is at the Serena Inn, a fivestar hotel. Being a Muslim-run country, it is respectful to wear long pants and long sleeved shirts. At the time I had no idea about this as, so it came as a great shock to the locals when I arrived in a skirt and a vest — I had a sarong thrown over me very quickly and a couple of disapproving eyes look in my direction.

The locals, both at the hotel and in town, are absolutely delightful— they are so friendly and even though they can hardly speak English, they do try to be accommodating. Zanzibar is still growing as a tourist destination and the people are still learning how to communicate with tourists. There is no holiday I could go on that could top a trip to Zanzibar — it is the crème de la crème of beach holidays and brings the au naturel back into nature.

the truth w t u b g in h t th and no t myths u r t le o h w he sting die u b o t The truth, t s e m co

As we enter a new year, after a buzzing Christmas season filled with all the finer (unhealthier) foods in life, we are faced with the inevitable, often tedious decision to diet. We search the net, talk to friends and read books, but do we ever really know what we are doing when we diet? We see the results in others who have been on various diets and immediately assume that they’ll work for us too, but rarely do we actually sit back and ask, “Is this diet going to be good for me, my health and my body?” Therefore, instead of doing the normal 10-ways-to-loseweight, we decided to do the opposite and find out which of these so-called “great diets” aren’t so great in the end. Instead of copying the plethora of facts that are plastered all over the Internet we decided to speak to the pro’s, the real unbiased pro’s – dieticians...

52

human body is designed to utilize glucose (derived from carbohydrates) as its primary fuel/energy source — it is capable of using fat and protein as an alternative, but the waste products from excessive use of these can create other problems for the body. For example, when forced to use fat as a primary source of fuel, the waste products are termed ketones, which create an acidic pH in the blood and an unpleasant smell on the breath. No-carb diets will not only exclude bread and grains, but will also require the exclusion of fruit, vegetables and legumes, thereby cutting off a valuable supply of antioxidants (cancer-fighters), vitamins and fibre.

We got in touch with Catherine Slevin and Barbara Knoetze, consultant dieticians at the Well Centre in Ballito, and asked them which dieting myths work and which are complete no-no’s.

I do believe that low-carbohydrate diets (40 percent of energy from carbs) can be beneficial in certain individuals, particularly those who are morbidly obese or who have a medical condition termed metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance syndrome (IRS). I would recommend that these patients consult with a dietician for assistance with this.

No-carb or low-carb diets No-carb diets are not a good option! The

Acid/alkaline diets These diets are not scientifically supported

and are based on the assumption that when certain foods are consumed they leave either an acidic or alkaline residue in the blood. Blood tests on patients consuming these foods have not shown a sustained change in blood pH levels. Therefore, I do not recommend this type of diet. Crash diets - e.g. the cabbage soup diet. These generally promise rapid results and restrict certain food groups. They appear to work initially but, however, weight loss tends to be from muscle and fluid, particularly if not exercising. Any loss in muscle causes a reduction in metabolism. Because they are difficult to sustain, one tends to keep to them for a few weeks and not a lifetime! When the weight gain happens, it is often with interest! The Heart and Stroke Foundation has actually distanced itself from the soup diet, saying that it was not developed by the organization and it do not endorse it. Meal-replacement shakes and bars Fresh, unprocessed foods are always going to be the better option but these have a place, particularly for the

words Storm Catterick featuring Catherine Slevin and Barbara Knoetze (Dieticians)

travelling businessmen and - women who don’t always have access to healthy foods. The problem is that there are many products out there claiming many benefits and one doesn’t know how credible or safe they are. I believe that the simpler the product, the better - avoids those with claims of being metabolic stimulants, etc. I would look for products made by companies with a long track record in health products or else consult your local dietician or a health shop with qualified assistants. Detox diets The liver is the organ in our body responsible for neutralizing and removing harmful substances from the body. To do this job it requires a large input of a variety of nutrients, such as proteins to bind toxins to, antioxidants to neutralize reactive substances, and vitamins to assist certain metabolic processes. In other words, there is a significant energy and nutrient demand for detoxification which is unlikely to be met by ONLY eating fruit or vegetables. A proper medical detox will require the removal of certain items from the diet, e.g. caffeine, alcohol, refined

starch, etc and the consumption of a nutrient-dense diet, which a dietician can assist you with. What is a healthy diet? No one diet fits all — one has to take into account underlying medical conditions, activity levels and cultural preferences. A relatively new avenue of scientific research, termed Nutrigenomics, has yielded some interesting findings with regard to diets tailor-made according to our genetic makeup and I am sure this will become a common procedure in the future. However, there are some basic tips that I believe apply to to everyone trying to lose weight: 1. Portion control at meal times is very important — a simple guideline for main meals: ½ to ¾ cup of a cooked starch (potatoes, corn, rice, bread, pasta) and lean protein (chicken, fish, lean meat) approximately the size of the palm of your hand and thickness of the little finger, plus one to two teaspoons of an added fat/oil and lots of a variety of vegetables/salads.

and this does not mean where you are buying your food from, but rather what the nutritional value of the food item. Is it rich in fibre or antioxidants? Has it got lots of added sugar or hydrogenated fats? The more UNPROCESSED your food choices, the better: i.e. choose rolled oats over crushed, milled oats, or legumes such as butter beans/chickpeas etc. rather than white rice and pastas. 3. Timing of meals is important — skipping meals creates a major stress on the body and often results in the body using muscle and not fat as a source of fuel. Avoid going for more than six hours without eating something. It is beneficial to eat small, healthy bits throughout the day rather than big portions three times a day. Happy journeys! the results required. This can be done by using kettlebells, barbells, bodyweight squats, press ups, burpees, beach running and tabatas.

Welcome to the new year and all that 2012 will offer you. Whether it’s a return home or an onward journey, I trust you have a purpose to it and that you embrace life to its fullest. This brings me to a great piece written by friend and top trainer Mike Mahler, who said “It’s no wonder that moronic sayings, such as fake it until you make it, are so popular today. Our society has become very good at faking it: we fake liking jobs we hate; we fake enjoying lives that we detest; we fake being happy when we’re miserable inside. We fake being who we aren’t and yes, we even fake financial wealth when we’re living month to month. Well, you can’t fake success or happiness, no matter how hard you try, so don’t bother. Further, if you work hard, and pay the price of success, you’ll never have to ‘fake it’. If you do some self-reflection, and determine what makes you happy, you don’t have to fake it.” (Taken from Mike’s book, Live Life Aggressively! What Self-Help Gurus Should Be Telling You!) This applies to everything in life, but I will apply the above thoughts to training.

• Joint mobility – warm-ups and warm-downs are vital. Make sure you always warm up before any exercise routine and warm down at the end. This should be a routine done religiously for joint longevity and overall physical wellbeing. The problem is that people always say they don’t have enough time – time must be made for your life to be more comfortable as you get older. Why walk around like a cripple just because you cut corners in the routines done earlier in your life.

2.

According to Tufts University, the greater your muscle mass, the greater the potential is for longevity. It is, in fact, the number-one biomarker for longevity. It is a far better predictor of longevity than total cholesterol or blood pressure.

3.

The more muscle you have, the more insulin receptor sites you have and the more sensitive they will be. Increased muscle prevents diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Translation: the more muscle you have, the easier it is to have low body fat.

4.

The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest. It is estimated that for every pound of muscle you gain, you burn an extra 50 calories per day.

5.

The more muscle you have, the more strength you have. This, according to the same researchers at Tufts University, is the number-two predictor for longevity. For women, strength is empowering.

• Do the work! The body was designed to work hard. The excuses of being too tired, too busy or not knowing what to do are not going to help you down the line. Just own up to what you want and go for it.

• Ask questions. If you are in the gym and the exercise doesn’t make sense, ask! Even better, ask a proper health professional – just ensure that he or she is well-qualified.

• Train for what the body was designed for – working on the treadmill is not what we were designed to do. Well, not the last time I checked the history books. Treadmills were designed for hamsters in cages. I hear someone saying, “But I can’t run outside because of crime or pollution”. Well, short, sharp and programmed workouts will deliver a lot more than the mindless kilometres on the hamster track or stationary bike. These can also be done at home or at your hotel. Whole-body routines, utilizing whole-body movement, will best deliver

more protein, potassium, magnesium and calcium to buffer the acidity in your body. The more alkaline you are: 1) the greater the endurance potential of the body, 2) the greater your immunity, the better your chances of surviving cancer or the swine flu.

• Don’t be scared to lift free weights. • A few choice tips on increasing muscle mass and / or strength from top strength coach Charles Poliquin (I am not talking about going out and building huge bulk; just a small amount of toning will offer huge benefits) such as: 1. The more muscle and bone mass you have the greater the acid buffering power you create. That is, you now have

you will never, ever out-exercise your diet. Never, ever. Eat well, eat clean and

• Last but certainly not least –

never take shortcuts on your nutrition. Love the reward of sacrifice, escape the loathing of regret. Have a great start to your year and safe travels.

land availability. Scarcity of new development opportunities, such as along Cape Town’s highly desirable Atlantic Seaboard, does in fact in reality keep average property prices in this area well above Johannesburg’s top suburbs, despite the higher average per capita income in Johannesburg. The exact same scenario will soon unfold in Zimbali over the next twelve months, as the availability of vacant land becomes scarcer, the average price of a plot can be expected to be forced upward by demand. At a price, older homes on valuable land will make way for new modern homes as people buy properties largely for the land value so as to redevelop the site. This has been the case along Clifton for many years. The second main reservation Loos expressed about the Rode methodology is that by picking a specific starting date, divergent results can be provided. It reminds me of that, often quoted, adage, “Lies, Lies and Statistics”. Using 1995 as an alternate starting point, to the 1966 date used in the Rode report, he demonstrates that the market could be interpreted as “under-valued”, by applying the same long-term trend line theory.

As property professionals we are delighted. The 2012 year has started with a “bang” and the summer festive season was the busiest we have experienced in over three years. It is as if many prospective purchasers have been sitting on the fence for the past two years watching and waiting to see where our economy is heading and have finally realized that the market is what it is, that it is without a doubt the best buyers market most of us will see for a very long time, and that if you are considering buying a property, this is the time to do it. In the first month of 2012 our Ballito office presented offers to purchase properties equal to roughly half of the total sales concluded for the entire 2011 year. Our February 2012 figures place us as the leading Seeff office nationally. We have every reason to feel bullish about the year ahead. A recent report published by respected property economist Erwin Rode has caused a bit of a storm in a teacup. He claims in this report that South African house prices are overvalued by at least 25%, which could take five years or more to recover. The press received on this report was immediately greeted by howls of protest by leaders in the estate agency industry. Valid points were made, including the remarks by Seeff Chairman, Samuel Seeff, that the residential property market was driven by emotional

58

needs in contrast to the commercial property market, and that 95% of buyers were not looking for investment returns or rental income, but wanted a foundation on which to build a life. John Loos of FNB, prepared a detailed analysis and response to the Rode Report claim and provides some very insightful views. The widely published and quoted FNB House Price Index indicated a nominal increase of 5.6% in January 2012 up from 4.7% in December 2011. In real terms, after adjusting for CPI Inflation (measured as 6.1% in December 2011), real house price growth showed a -1.4% decline in December 2011. So in real terms house prices are -15.5% lower than their February 2008 peak. Loos makes the point that the Rode methodology is a technical analysis as opposed to a fundamental analysis, using 1966 as the starting point and deflates nominal house prices by building costs to get “real” house prices. The rationale of using building costs to deflate house price data is that building costs drive property values over the long term and by plotting these real values over a long term trend line, we are able to determine if prices are “over-valued” relative to their long term trend. The first problem highlighted by Loos using this approach is the assumption that the supply of property can be added to without the constraints of town planning restrictions or

The third and final point provided by Loos is that the average home of the mid 1960’s is very different to the home of today. Having watched the amazing changes in the average design, size and value of both Zimbali and Simbithi properties over the past five years, it is almost impossible to compare these exquisite new residences with those previously built on very similar sites, only a few years ago. Similarly, on a national basis, as land values become scarcer and more valuable, the average real price does in fact rise over time. Loos concludes that urbanization does inevitably lead to increases in house prices over time, that these increases do not occur in a straight line but follow the general economic cycle driven by supply and demand pressures, and while the short term view does include further real house price deflation, the improvement in the economic cycle can be expected to translate into higher future real prices. For the markets we operate in we like to take a micro-economic view. A myriad of subtle factors can influence the perceived value and eventual selling price of your property. The psychology of pricing and the presentation of the property are aspects, which we have found to be fundamentally important. With competition amongst sellers to attract the attention of the smaller pool of buyers the role and skill of a good estate agent has never been more important.
