In a few months from now, Lorinda and I will have been residents of the North Coast for 20 years! We are so grateful for the time we spent in Pretoria and Johannesburg where we made lifelong friends, had some of the best experiences, and got exposed to opportunities we wouldn’t have gotten down here in KZN. It was a really good season, but life offered us an opportunity to move back ‘home’ and the appeal of a coastal lifestyle for Lorinda and I, along with our young kids, just couldn’t be turned down.

I remember being so bullish about the move back, excited that the new opportunity, along with the small gains from our time away, would allow me to buy a house close to the beach, with stunning sea views. I’d be able to stroll down and sip my cappuccinos on the beach. Dreaming! Clearly, it had been a while since I looked at property prices in Durban. Plus, do you remember the property boom of the early 2000s?! We settled in a nice estate close to the kids' schools and shops and a fiveminute drive to the beach. I was humbled but happy as ever!

So 20 years on, we still love all that the North Coast (or is it the East Coast? That

still confuses me a little) has to offer. Umhlanga has literally exploded over the 20 years we’ve been back and while it’s become a small, modern-day ‘city’, the people and places still hold a small-town charm. It’s the most interesting of blends. We have modern high-rise buildings akin to Miami, world-class shopping, cuisine and restaurants, and yet locals still wave to each other on the promenade and drinks at The George are like those in a small village - all about connecting with locals and catching up. What a great life it is here!

Speaking of Umhlanga, here are a few highlights I think you’ll enjoy in this edition. The hidden spots we’ve unearthed allow you to get out and discover incredible eateries and cafes that you probably hadn’t heard of. Umhlanga is full of surprises, and NOW Coffee, a small coffee shop with a drive-through, is certainly one. Dive into their interesting history of bringing their one-of-a-kind shop to life. We also take a look LIV Store and the inspiring story behind it.

Enjoy the read, hopefully with a cup of coffee in hand and your feet kicked up.

God bless.

P.S. If you haven’t followed us on Facebook or Instagram yet, please do. We’d love to get your feedback and comments or just engage.

INTERNAL REST

“Easter weekend.” For some, this is a swear word. Hours of preparations, family to attend to, and children to entertain make the amount of effort that goes into planning this weekend quite overwhelming.

You might be thinking, “Easter is a holiday. By definition, it's supposed to be restful.” Yet, how many of us braced ourselves for the impending chaos that will arise? For some, it is the anxiety of family and in-laws or the pressure of organising and coordinating family activities. If you are religious, then there are expected activities that go along with the holiday.

I’ve been thinking back to how I used to spend Easter and how I spent it now, this year. At one stage, the planning and preparations overwhelmed me so much that I cut everyone out of my life. I was at the point of breakdown. I realised that I needed something to free me from all the pressure and obligations that people (knowingly or unknowingly) placed on me.

I had to find a definition of rest that was actual freedom for me and would not be affected by how I was thought of or treated. I realised my biggest problem was just that: always worrying about what others thought of me. The truth is that it upset me so much because, on some level, I believed them. It wasn't so much what they thought of me but what I thought of myself. I had to accept myself, accept that what I was doing what was best for me, and actually believe it.

If you ask people what Easter is about, some might say Jesus and His death, burial and resurrection. There is a scripture in the Bible that says,

“Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” It's a picture of putting down all the expectations of family and life. Putting down all the expectations of you. A rest from a racing mind and endless to-do lists. In this way, your mind becomes a safe place for you.

My outlook on holidays has shifted from rest and relaxation to taking every opportunity to enjoy life's chaos and the brief moments we have with each other. Rest on the inside allows me to go into unrestful situations and bring that rest to other people. So many people have no escape from their external circumstances - holidays only increase the pressure on them mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Finding inner peace in your mind affects how you view your external circumstances.

Rest in knowing that you are wholly accepted. Although your efforts may not be recognised by those around you, you are seen, you are loved, and you are accepted at all times.

I had to accept myself, accept that what I was doing was best for me, and actually believe it.

The team at SandBar loves experimenting with flavours and textures to create unique meals

Known for their delicious food, yummy cocktails and, of course, cool and vibey atmosphere, SandBar Restaurant & Cocktail Bar is a jewel on the East Coast. The name comes from its proximity to the ocean, but this isn’t just another island of sand that shows itself during low tide.

Looking out over the Indian Ocean, the restaurant exudes a relaxing ambience, allowing patrons to unwind and enjoy a truly unique eating and cocktail experience. On their well-thought-out menu, you will find dishes from all around the world. For starters, you have the spicy Thai prawn soup, made with fresh Norwegian salmon head stock. The tuna tartar and caesar salad are delicious summer dishes to start your experience, and then there is a wide variety of mains which include steaks, poultry, curries and obviously seafood and fresh sushi, too.

However, the juicy and sticky pork loin ribs are the house speciality and definitely a crowd-pleaser! They process and prepare the ribs in-house, not smoked. They are slow-cooked for a few hours, sealed in their marinade, and allowed to rest for 24 hours.

They are then grilled over high heat, cut into individual pieces, dipped into their secret SandBar Rib Marinade, and served with a smile. Another highlight on the main menu is the fresh seared tuna loin steak which is paired with wasabi mash - simply sublime! Homemade apple pie and malva pudding desserts are favourites among the sweet treats, both served warm and baked until perfect.

The team at SandBar loves experimenting with flavours and textures to create unique meals and drinks. When it comes to cocktails, every component is considered and precisely measured to ensure a perfect balance is achieved between sweet and sour. Classics like the margarita, espresso martini and 007 vodka martini are given a little SandBar love to make sure they are perfect, while their signature cocktails, “Watermelon Slush” and “Adios Mother F*#ker”, bring in the variety patrons love to try.

This is truly a special place, right on the beach in Umdloti, that has stood the test of time. 031

LUXURY

WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER
At L'Atelier Paris, every detail has been meticulously crafted to offer a truly immersive and unforgettable experience.

Many international brands have come to call Umhlanga home, and L’Atelier Paris has been welcomed with open arms as they join the stores of Platinum Walk in Oceans Mall. CEO Jean-Philippe Avenel, with his experience in luxury jewellery and enthusiasm for business, brings to life an experience inspired by France’s culture and eye for quality. This exquisite boutique promises to infuse a touch of French elegance into the vibrant South African coastal city.

Starting as a watch connoisseur, JeanPhilippe has had ample experience in the world of timepieces and elegant jewellery. Having cultivated his love for watches since childhood, Jean-Philippe found himself captivated by the intricate craftsmanship and heritage of Maisons during his time in Paris and the South of France. He also spent time with the iconic brand Cartier, giving him the knowledge of managing luxury retail while gaining an understanding of our local markets. He saw an opportunity to combine his French background with the warmth and vibrancy of Umhlanga after spending six years working with Cartier in Johannesburg.

Establishing the flagship store in Oceans Mall’s Platinum Walk was a natural choice for Jean-Philippe. KwaZulu-Natal’s East Coast has become a place for affluent lifestyles to thrive. “Durban possesses a soul as vibrant

as its landscapes. I wanted to contribute to its rich cultural tapestry by offering a journey into French opulence,” explains Jean-Philippe. “I aim to provide the community with a personal and immersive shopping experience,” he adds.

The L'Atelier Paris Boutique is a true embodiment of luxury, drawing inspiration from the allure of the French Riviera and the captivating beauty of the KwaZuluNatal coastline. As you step through the doors, you're greeted by an atmosphere of sophistication and refinement. The rich hues of gold and reds envelop you, instantly transporting you into the world of timeless elegance. Then, you enter into an expansive open-plan area adorned with consulting desks and illuminated lightboxes showcasing the exquisite collections of jewellery and timepieces from each brand.

Now open to the public physically and online, you can shop their incredible collection of opulent brands of watches and jewellery. You’re able to purchase fine watches from Cartier, Breitling, Tag Heuer and Longines and jewellery from FRED, Messika and Lepageprestigious brands from all over the world.

Among the watch brands housed at L’Atelier Paris, Cartier is celebrated for its craftsmanship, innovation and timeless appeal.

Hidden FO DIE FINDS

From tucked-away restaurants to around-the-corner cafes, there are so many hidden, lesser-known local spots that offer incredible food and unique beverages, so we thought we’d introduce you to a few… If you’ve visited all of these spots, you’re a true local food explorer!

Neighbourhood Cafe & Bar

Hidden under a canopy of trees in La Lucia, this oasis offers everything from mouth-watering dishes and creative cocktails to a beautiful setting and vibrant atmosphere. This family-run restaurant started as a boutique hotel for out-of-town travellers but when the pandemic hit, they decided to open their gates to the public for the first time. Two years later, Neighbourhood is a space that all South Africans get to call home and feel a sense of belonging - a space where strangers become neighbours.

This spot is known for its tranquil scenery - open-air dining with lush gardens, flowing streams, koi ponds and fairy-lit trees (aka an Instagrammer’s paradise!). The bar is a cosy area with dimmed crystal lighting, autumn hues and comfy couches. They serve brekkie and lunch from Tuesday to Sunday and fairy-lit dinners on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. They also have delicious cocktails and a boutique wine selection and host fun events like Latin evenings!

For brekkie, you must try the Royal Benny, at lunchtime munch on the Tandoori Chicken sandwich, and for dinner treat yourself to the Bacon and Brie Fettuccini. Veggie options are available too.

Specialising in pasta and pizzas, they take pride in using quality ingredients to craft dishes that leave a lasting impression. Buttercup Vegetarian and Vegan Café

On Lagoon Drive, you will find Buttercup, a small cafe offering deliciousness in the form of meat-free meals. Buttercup was started by two vegetarian sisters with a passion for food and innovation. Both with degrees in computer science, they ditched the keyboard for chopping boards to create unique and tasty vegetarian and vegan dishes. The base of their dishes is a wheatbased plant protein called seitan which is manufactured by Buttercup and has a texture that very closely resembles meat.

Their menu is diverse, with falafel wraps, chow mein, pasta, curries, vegan BBQ “chops” and peri-peri ‘vicken’ (vegan chicken). Their signature dish is The KFV Meal - a vegan version of the fast food favourite with crumbed vegan pieces, chips and mash and gravy. Another popular dish is the KFV Burger - a crumbed vegan patty on a fresh vegan bun with coleslaw, lettuce, vegan mayo and a side of chips. They also offer a range of popular frozen products as convenient, vegan alternatives for burgers, nuggets, BBQ and Tikka flavoured products and more.

The Italian Corner

I scream! You scream! We all scream for The Italian Corner! This is a family business specialising in homemade Italian gelato with 10 years under its belt. When the family first moved to Durban, they found a gap in the market for authentic Italian gelato, so they went back to Italy, attended a school in Bologna to learn the art of making this delicious dessert, and returned to Umhlanga to open The Italian Corner. The main shop is based near Cabana Beach Hotel just off the promenade at Umhlanga Main Beach, and they also have a mobile trailer that caters for weddings, parties and other special events.

The Italian Corner has a huge variety of flavours from Kinder Joy, Nutella, Amarena cherry and salted caramel to Oreo, mint, hazelnut and much more. However, the top seller is the Ferrero Rocher by far! All of their flavours are additive and preservative-free and there are dairy and sugar-free options too. What makes their scoops one of a kind is the excellent quality of the ingredients, in combination with their imported machines which always ensure perfect smoothness and creaminess.

Their goal is to promote vegetarianism and veganism by showing that food can still have the flavour and enjoyment of your favourite fast food without the meat! @theitaliancorner_za

the Power of Journalling Unlocking

A Pathway to Self-Discovery and Healing with Rakhi Beekrum

WORDS KAI COATES

30 | WWW.THEUMHLANGAMAGAZINE.CO.ZA

In the realm of personal growth, there’s a timeless tool that often goes unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of modern life: journalling. Defined as a reflective practice involving the expression of thoughts, feelings and experiences through writing, it serves as a sacred space where you can delve deep into parts of your mind and soul. But what exactly is journalling, and why do people see it as a transformative practice?

Rakhi Beekrum, a counselling psychologist and advocate for mental well-being, sheds light on the benefits of journalling. “It is not merely about jotting down the events of the day. It's a deliberate act of self-exploration - a journey into the inner landscape of one's thoughts and emotions.”

There are various approaches to journalling, each tailored to address specific needs and goals. From the freeing release of ‘brain dumps’ to soulsearching reflective journaling, the possibilities are endless. “Whether it's expressing gratitude, tracking dreams or exploring anxious thoughts, it offers a versatile toolkit for navigating life's complexities.”

There are also many misconceptions about journalling, but Rakhi is quick to dispel the

Journalling serves as a gateway to selfawareness, emotional regulation and personal growth

myths. “Journalling is not merely a pastime for girls. It's a universal tool for self-exploration and growth that is accessible to everyone.”

For those embarking on their journalling journey, she offers some advice on getting started. “The key lies in setting intentions, finding a format that resonates with you, and establishing a consistent practice.” Whether it's with pen and paper or making use of an app, the choice is yours. As a fellow beginner to journalling, I found that having a more creative and colourful journal with doodles, stickers, images and coloured pens helped me to be more engaged and intentional with each entry. My journal is a bit like a scrapbook, which is a fun way to express myself and have a creative release.

Yet, the benefits of journalling extend beyond being creative. “It serves as a gateway to selfawareness, emotional regulation and personal growth. Through the act of writing, individuals gain insights into their thought patterns, identify triggers and develop problem-solving skills. It's a journey of self-discovery, where every page holds the possibility of transformation,” adds Rakhi

This transformative power of journalling is not just a theory - there are real-life instances where the practice has helped people immensely. Rakhi recounts the story of a patient who was going through a traumatic life event - and even amid her trauma, was able to find hope and perspective due to her consistent gratitude practices and found comfort in gratitude journalling. "Even in the darkest of times, she unearthed glimmers of light." She also worked with a young student who grappled with anxiety and intrusive thoughts. Through journalling, he was able to identify and challenge irrational thoughts, and then replace them with more constructive thoughts. “It became his lifeline, empowering him to reclaim control over his thoughts and emotions.”

In the beautiful jumble of life, journalling emerges as a thread of hope, bringing together the fragments of our experiences into a cohesive narrative of healing and growth. Guided by the wisdom of Rakhi, why not start your own journalling journey?

Lastly, remember this: “Journalling is not just about writing – it's about rewriting the script of our lives, one page at a time.”

WORLD-CLASS Coffee

Welcome to Your Local Java Drive-Through!

I’ve always believed that life is too short to drink anything but amazing coffee. Whether it’s an americano, cappuccino or decaf latte, I can appreciate a good brew. A bunch of coffee lovers at NOW Coffee took on the challenge of supplying the community with their daily cup (or cups) of caffeine fixes. They aim to better the world through coffee by sharing their experiences with everyone on the East Coast. What makes NOW Coffee a unique offering is that

you can sit down to sip on your cuppa, or you can quickly grab your coffee at their drive-through!

The team is obsessed with quality. They source, roast and brew the best possible cups of coffee for their patrons. The drivethrough came about when they had to pause the opening of the cafe due to the COVID restrictions as a way to get their brand out there before opening the shop. What better

way than a drive-through coffee stop? Since there was no speciality like that in the area, they quickly saw the demand for COVIDfriendly ways to get their coffee. Soon after, more branches opened to cater to the community.

Many hours were put into bringing this concept to life. They even set up reenactments in their home to play out how orders would go.

Using the space they were given and designing everything around convenience, they spent sleepless nights making sure there were no flaws in their plan. Known for delicious coffee, they even do pour-overs (a special manual drip brewing method) - a refined and classic way to create rich and flavourful coffee. Also regaled for a friendly company of staff, each person who visits leaves as a member of the family.

They love being part of the East Coast community and have built a loyal client base over the years and pride themselves on fostering strong relationships. Though their menu is small, the chef creates fresh and delicious meals to pair with your drink of choice. Not forgetting the fantastic views you can enjoy from the spot, creating a complete and holistic experience with every visit.

Always looking towards the future, they are open to new opportunities while staying small enough to continue to be owner-run and keep high standards for quality. They have begun recently supplying cafes in Cape Town and look forward to going international with their brew.

This team is passionate about what they do and wants to serve their community to the best of their ability. They’re meticulous about the consistency and quality of their service and products, which can be tasted in every sip. This is just the beginning for this vibrant spot.

MY STORY

If you’ve seen those stunning images of local lightning storms, the Umhlanga cityscape and our oceans, you’ll know the incredible work that Christo Smith does. We caught up with him on his journey and inspirations.

Starting my photographic journey was a way to show people the beauty all around us in the way that I interpreted it, through my lens

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF

I reside in Umhlanga Rocks and absolutely love it here. The ocean is a constant source of inspiration, wonderment and beauty. I sell photographic prints and it's such an honour to have some of my photos hang in people's spaces. By day, I am a boxing coach and run a small boxing gym, named Prestige Boxing, in Durban North. As an ex-professional boxer, I enjoy helping people with their fitness goals and teaching new skills. I'm also a proud cat dad and spend my time at home with my two cats, Fluff and Peanut.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR JOURNEY IN PHOTOGRAPHY?

I have always loved art. At school, I found myself drawn to art as a subject and its different media. Photography seemed like the natural progression to create something beautiful using a camera. Starting my photographic journey was a way to show people the beauty all around us in the way that I interpreted it, through my lens.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE IN PHOTOGRAPHY?

I love "HDR" photography, which basically means taking different exposures of a particular scene and then layering them on top of each other to create an image that is rich in detail and colours.

I often do long exposures, which give a sense of motion or movement, to capture lightning strikes, and then overlay the individual photos to create a composite image to showcase the strikes that I managed to capture throughout a storm. On the odd occasion, I enjoy portrait photography and the use of contrast in

my lighting. For now, I enjoy landscapes, seascapes, lightning and starscapes when I'm able to get out of the city, and I shoot professional boxing tournaments when we have them.

HAVE YOU EVER FACED ANY UNIQUE CHALLENGES AS A PHOTOGRAPHER?

Each subject comes with its own unique challenges. Portraits can be tricky in lighting, or the person may feel a little awkward at first. For ocean photography, the sea is unpredictable. Often larger waves or the incoming tide have left me unexpectedly drenched. Lightning and

38 | WWW.THEUMHLANGAMAGAZINE.CO.ZA
PEOPLE

rain can be quite a challenge. I've been close to getting struck by lightning a few times, and I've experienced some flooding which has left my car damaged. The thrill of seeing an incredible storm far outweighs the dangers for me, and I am always left in awe of Mother Nature. I enjoy the unpredictability of the weather. The unpredictability is what adds a challenge and what allows for a rewarding image when everything comes together.

WHAT HAS BEEN A HIGHLIGHT IN YOUR CAREER THUS FAR?

I have enjoyed several articles and newspapers using my photos. I have been honoured to have some of my photos up in prominent public spaces, as well as private spaces, around the world. I've also been nominated as photographer of the year for Boxing South Africa twice. For me, the joy of sharing my photos and my experience with the world is constantly a highlight.

CAN YOU SHARE SOME TIPS FOR THOSE WHO FIND A PASSION IN PHOTOGRAPHY?

Shoot. Shoot as much as you can. Learn all the photographic rules and learn them well. There are reasons why these rules exist. Break the rules only when you know what you are breaking and why you are breaking them. Find a photographer that inspires you, ask them for honest critique, and listen to them. Watch YouTube tutorials. Learn constantly.

My goal is to leave a legacy through visual echoes, and for my work to bring as much joy and passion to those who view the photographs I create as the joy and passion I feel the moment I capture them. I also strive to point out the beauty that is all around us. As I always say, “Keep looking for the beauty - it's there.”

with a Purpose PURCHASE

Within Glenore Centre in Durban North, there’s a piece of the uplighting spirit of LIV, where people come together to shop and eat in support of this organisation. Welcome to LIV Store.

If you’ve been a KZN local for a while, you’ve probably heard of LIV (Lungisisa Indlela Village meaning ‘The Right Way’), an NGO focused on changing the lives of vulnerable children. Whether you’ve visited LIV Village or not, this organisation is close to many hearts.

Founders Tich and Joan Smith had always wanted to open a space for the greater East Coast community to come together - to bring the Village to town. During COVID, against all odds, they took a leap of faith and opened LIV Store in Durban North towards the end of 2020.

A challenge was figuring out exactly what the store would offer. Joan wanted a thrift store, while Tich thought a coffee shop would be a great idea. So, they decided to put the two ideas together! LIV Store has become a haven of shopping and eating, where all proceeds go towards the beloved non-profit.

As you walk in, you’re greeted by a treasure trove of decor pieces from mugs and glasses to pillows and paintings. Racks of the most unique pieces of clothing fill the store and shelves are packed with various books, CDs and DVDs. There’s also a kids section with a variety of toys, games and clothes for the little ones. It’s very easy to spend hours in this shop looking through their varying collections to find a gem to take home.

Most of the stock is donated, secondhand items, but you can pick up some new pieces they sell on consignment, such as Kookaburra cricket gear, end-of-sale products from shops and Lavender Linen clothing and bedding. LIV has branded clothes and accessories, and one of their baristas sells his own clothing range, Be You, in-store. LIV Creative pieces are also availablehomeware made by two local ladies using stunning shweshwe fabric.

WWW.THEUMHLANGAMAGAZINE.CO.ZA | 45 LOCAL

Towards the back of the store is the cafea peaceful setting that’s perfect for getting some work done, chatting with friends or meeting with colleagues. They even have a quaint boardroom with a TV that can be booked by businesses. Their menu is simple yet delicious. From build-yourown breakfasts and toasted sandwiches to cakes and baked goods, they try to source ingredients and items locally as much as possible. Their counter is also often frequented by people picking up their takeaway coffee or a quick bite to eat.

All of this is managed by Jan-George, along with the help of Esme, who had been part of the LIV family for a while before taking over the store. Running LIV Store is no easy feat. The items go through an extensive process before they ‘hit the shelves’. All of the donations are moved from their store to a warehouse, where Esme, staff, volunteers and LIV interns (young adults who grew up in LIV Village) work together to sort, categorise and clean the items. LIV Village has first option on all the items - on top of the proceeds from the store,

the organisation gets some budget relief through the furniture, clothes and toys that local people and businesses kindly donate.

Almost nothing is thrown away! Pieces that can’t be sold at LIV Store are sold to the local community at very discounted prices. They also have a programme that upskills and trains women from local townships to sell their items and make a living. If all else fails, they try their best to recycle the things that are too old or broken. “We generally don’t say no to anything!” Jan-George says.

46 | WWW.THEUMHLANGAMAGAZINE.CO.ZA

The rise of thrifting has also helped to shape the store into what it is today. “I like to say that we’re a boutique thrift store,” says Esme. “We push the idea of ‘purchase with purpose’. There’s a purpose in upcycling and selling our stock, and the profits go towards making an even bigger impact.”

Growing the cafe was also a community effort. The team from We Are Food, a Durban North-based business that offers delicious frozen meals, helped to create the

menu. The talented ladies in the kitchen trained through LIV’s culinary school and make every meal and drink with love. Their scrumptious dishes and great coffee, made by expert baristas, have gained this spot many regulars.

Great things are on the horizon for LIV Store. They recently opened a pop-up store in Cornubia and are planning to open two more stores with coffee shops in the next year. Many more interns from LIV Village are set to join the team, teaching them

the value of working and earning a living. Jan-George and Esme are also passionate about growing their online presence and eventually creating an online store, including auctions on rarer, more expensive items. “We are extremely grateful to everyone who donates, buys our items or spends time in our cafe,” Jan-George and Esme conclude. “We are all about bringing the community together to help those who need it most.”

Fuel your child's growth and development with registered dietitian Vanessa's expert tips for healthier eating habits.

48 | WWW.THEUMHLANGAMAGAZINE.CO.ZA

Feeling overwhelmed by the daily grind, including the lunchtime scramble for your child's meal? You're not alone. Packing school lunches can be a chaotic task, often resulting in haphazard choices like throwing in a random fruit, a sandwich and some packaged snacks. But fear not! Vanessa Clarke, your local registered dietitian, is here to lend a hand.

With a passion for empowering families to make healthier food choices, Vanessa aims to instil lifelong healthy eating habits. As a fellow parent, she understands the challenges firsthand and is dedicated to equipping families with practical knowledge for a healthier lifestyle. With over 16 years of experience, she has worked across various sectors, finally establishing her successful private practice in Umhlanga Ridge. Here, she works with adults and children, providing tailored guidance for healthier living. In essence, she is your go-to ally in navigating the journey towards healthier eating habits for your family.

Let's tackle some common misconceptions about children and food. Contrary to popular belief, eating is a learned behaviour for kids and doesn't always come naturally. Vanessa often encounters parents with unrealistic expectations about their children's eating habits, especially in the early years. She emphasises that many factors influence a child's eating patterns, and it's essential to understand the complexity involved.

lunchbox or diet ensures children meet all their needs for growth and development,” explains Vanessa.

Factors like sensory perception and fear of new foods influence children's eating habits, which can contribute to picky eating behaviours. It's crucial to realise that introducing new foods can be a gradual process, sometimes taking 17 to 20 attempts before acceptance.

Why is a balanced lunchbox essential for your child? Simple – kids' bodies are like engines running at high speed, needing fuel to match their growth and activities. “A balanced

Opting for homemade whole foods over processed snacks ensures your kids get the nutrition they need to thrive. It's about fuelling their bodies with nutrientrich foods for a healthy, happy future. Beware of packaged products labelled 'healthy' or 'nutritious'. Vanessa warns that food labels can mislead. In South Africa, terms like 'healthy' are prohibited on food labels. Instead, look for terms like 'source of', 'high in' or 'low in' to find healthier options.

While fruit is a nutritious choice, fruit juice often lacks fibre and can be high in calories and sugars. Limit fruit juice intake and opt for whole fruit whenever possible for a balanced diet. Keep an eye on labels to make informed choices when shopping for your family's health.

Wondering how to keep lunch boxes varied for busy parents? Here's the scoop:

VEGETABLES: Aim for one or two options like apples, bananas or chopped carrots to ensure a good dose of vitamins. Reserve fruit juice and dried fruit for occasional treats.

STARCHY FOODS OR GRAINS: Opt for high-fibre choices like wholewheat wraps or high-fibre bread or crackers, or add some homemade popcorn for extra fibre.

MEAT OR MEAT ALTERNATIVES: Consider chicken sandwiches, leftover chicken drumsticks, meatballs, biltong, cheese or vegetarian options like beans, nuts, and seeds.

DAIRY: Choose unsweetened yoghurts or grated cheese for added protein and calcium.

HYDRATION: Fill up their water bottle to keep them hydrated throughout the day. Skip sugary drinks to avoid obesity and tooth decay.

By incorporating these elements, you'll ensure a balanced and nutritious lunch for your child, even on busy days.

A Visit TO ROME

Discover The Colosseum Venue

Avenue that combines the best of art, history, mythology and modern elegance, The Colosseum brings together the past and present. This function venue, within the iconic Britannia Hotel, offers a holistic experience for any event. With the Britannia Hotel dating back to 1879, the venue is rich in local and international history. We got to spend some time at this beautiful venue, to have our own mini-conference. Inspired by the owner’s travels to Rome, the decor features elements from the ancient world. We admired the intricate wallpaper featuring replicas of well-known Renaissance paintings adorning the walls and ceilings, with soft ambient lighting that makes you feel like you’re in the Sistine Chapel itself.

The golden cutlery made us feel like royalty, matching the golden trimmings in the decor, shaded to look aged as if straight from the times of the empire. We were blown away by the attention to detail the team put into

creating the atmosphere. Custom-made marble statues of famous historical and mythological figures in beautiful renditions surround the room, created with intricate details. Lending to its name, there is a scaled-down facade of the Colosseum in the room! Staff even dress up in the traditional Spartan regalia, adding to the authenticity of the experience. The Colosseum also includes original artwork painted by the owner himself, expressing his love for art and history.

This venue is for everyone, especially those who appreciate ancient cultures. Having a brief background in studying Roman history, I was inspired by the effort put into bringing an authentic experience for patrons. Seating up to 100 people, catering and decor are already taken care of. Featuring packages to choose from with a set curated menu, all you have to do is dress up and show up! Great food is essential to any venue, and The Colosseum did not disappoint. All of their

traditional and unique dishes are prepared in-house with their expert staff. We indulged in quality, delicious appetisers and entrees made with the utmost attention to detail. Their main dishes, made from recipes crafted with Rome in mind, transported us to another world of flavour. The highlight, their distinct desserts were particularly divine!

They have facilities with the latest technology so your presentations or family slideshows are shown clearly and professionally. With second-storey seating in exclusive areas, it gives you the feeling of a box seat at the royal theatre, able to see everything below. Whether it’s a birthday, wedding, anniversary or your company’s year-end, the team at The Colosseum is ready to accommodate your every wish, with skill and passion. 031

FUSION OF FLAVOURS

Crane & Feathers

Inspired by African culture and our country’s national bird, the blue crane, Crane & Feathers strives to provide an unforgettable experience for everyone who comes through their doors. They have created an upmarket and stylish space for relaxed days sipping on cocktails or celebrating a special occasion. Welcomed by a warm host, we sat in their outdoor seating area to enjoy the beautiful weather. The courteous and knowledgeable Jeff and their team of attentive managers took care of us. They guided us through the expansive menu and suggested the best dishes for us to try. Starting off with drinks and starters, we were treated to traditional favourites and signature dishes and cocktails you won’t find anywhere else.

Taking pride in their mixology, we got to taste a stunning variety of drinks. The Queen, aptly named, is a beautiful cocktail infused with fresh ingredients which makes it refreshing. Made with vanilla chai syrup and aromatic bitters, their Whiskey Sour is nothing short of the best in town. The light whiskey taste blended well with the honey and nutty

intensity. For those who don’t drink alcohol, they have a great range of mocktails. The Blue Lemonade - sour, invigorating and very pretty - is a great summertime refreshment.

Starters included their iconic beef tongue, served with truffled cauliflower, onions and a peppercorn sauce. The meat was tender and flavourful, complemented by the rich peppercorn sauce. We also tucked into a fresh seafood cocktail, made with crisp salad leaves, prawns, calamari, mussels and slices of avocado. Their Crane & Feathers twist on the crayfish thermidor was stuffed with prawns, topped with a deliciously creamy sauce and served with egg-fried rice. Just these few dishes opened up a whole new world of culinary fusions!

Onto the main meals, we were blown away by the creativity put into every option. The Beef Short Rib, a blend of tradition and innovation, is served with a mushroom samp risotto, onions and shimeji mushrooms in a beef jus. The fall-off-the-bone meat and out-ofthe-box combination of samp in a risotto style made it stand out. From their seafood

selection, the signature Spiced Kingklip had us hook, line and sinker! We couldn’t get enough of the chive mash, paired with the perfectly prepared fish. A local favourite, the Oxtail did not disappoint. Made in a red wine jus, plated with that velvety mash and roasted vegetables, the lean meat was well-done but not dried out. From the vegan menu, the Isijingi, a sweet pumpkin main, combined with the accompanying blueberries and chilli oil, was a wonderful experience.

At the end of the night, we shared dessert, too stuffed to attempt our own. The chocolate fondant stole our hearts and made us feel warm and fuzzy inside with its lovely gooey centre. We were thoroughly spoiled with incredible food and warm hospitality at Crane & Feathers, and we can’t wait for our next visit!

Diets & Health

Iwant to talk to you about a revolutionary approach to diet and health that is changing lives and improving the well-being of so many individuals: the blood-type diet married to a low-carb eating plan with intermittent fasting. This is a very rewarding and manageable plan to fit into your lifestyle.

BLOOD TYPE DIET

The blood type diet is a way of eating that categorises food as beneficial or harmful according to your blood type’s unique digestive system. This unique combination is proving to have incredible benefits, particularly in the areas of reversing type 2 diabetes, managing type 1 diabetes, inflammation reduction, hormone balance and total gut health.

INTERMITTENT AND WATER FASTING

Once you have followed the correct meal plan for 12 weeks, you then can include the highly beneficial water fast for 24, 36, 48 or 72 hours.

Water fasting is a practice that has been used for thousands of years as a way to cleanse the gut, promote weight loss and improve overall health. It involves abstaining from all food and drink, except water, for a specified period of time. Regular

water fasting can help detoxify the body, reset the digestive system and improve mental clarity.

One of the key benefits of water fasting is its ability to promote autophagy, a natural process in which the body cleans out damaged cells and regenerates new ones, which can help to prevent chronic diseases. Additionally, water fasting has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation in the body.

LOW-CARB

Studies have shown that a diet low in carbohydrates can help regulate hormone levels, improve insulin sensitivity and support healthy weight management. By reducing the consumption of processed

carbohydrates and sugar, you can create a more stable blood sugar environment.

2700 new diagnoses of diabetes are reported every week in South Africa! We have the highest number of diabetics in the African continent. We also have 30% adult obesity, the highest in SubSaharan Africa. Diabetes is a state of carbohydrate toxicity! Insulin resistance is essentially a state of carbohydrate intolerance.

Remember that high carbs cause glucose and insulin to skyrocket, which triggers hunger, fat storage and cravings. This is why we want a low-carb approach so we can starve the brain that is asking for more high-carb foods. This can be reversed easily by following this diet!

PAYING YOUR HOME LOAN FASTER

WORDS GRANT GAVIN

Owning a property is a significant milestone, but the long-term commitment of a loan can be daunting. You can potentially eliminate years’ worth of debt by paying even a little extra into your monthly bond - from day one or as soon as possible. Even shortening your home loan repayment period by five years can save you hundreds of thousands of rands in interest repayments.

Here are a few strategies for paying off your home loan faster.

SECURE THE BEST INTEREST RATE: Begin your property-owning journey by securing the most favourable interest rate right at the start. Keep your own bank honest by comparing lenders' rates to ensure that you get the best possible deal on your home loan. Use a bond originator like BetterBond who will get quotes from all the major banks on your behalf, saving you time and money.

LIFESTYLE OVERHAUL: Thoroughly examine your spending habits to identify where to cut back. Look carefully at your discretionary spending: dining out, entertainment subscriptions and impulse shopping. By making smart choices and prioritising your financial goals, you can redirect those savings to your bond repayment and reduce your home loan.

TURBOCHARGE WITH LUMP SUMS: Grab those unexpected windfalls, like a payment from the tax man or an unexpected inheritance, and transform them into bond-slaying missiles. Allocate this money, whether it's all or part of your www.grantgavin.com

annual bonus or a surprise influx of cash, to your home loan and watch the outstanding balance dwindle and the interest charges diminish.

MAKE THE PROPERTY WORK FOR YOU: Sweat your asset with a holiday hustle by renting out your guest room(s) during peak travel and vacation seasons (if you can). If your property has dual living potential, consider maximising that and renting that space out as short or long-term accommodation. Either way, this additional income added to your bond could be a game-changer.

The best time to pay extra on your bond is within the first 10 or so years of the loan term. Banks structure the repayments so that interest is weighted more to the first half of the home loan term. This means that, to begin with, about 80% of your monthly repayment amount goes just to pay the interest with only 20% towards the capital amount. Consequently, over time, and towards the end of the loan term, you’re paying less on interest and more towards the equity in your property.

There is no better feeling than eliminating the debt on your property. Whether you decide to enjoy the benefit of an increase in your monthly disposable income or reutilise your asset to raise finance and invest in another property purchase, your paid-off asset will serve you well.
