EdITor’s NoTE

As I sit here and reflect on the milestone of turning 50 this month, I am filled with a profound sense of appreciation for what has been the journey of my life. Fifty, half a century, is a significant marker in one's existence. I’m amazed that almost half of that has been spent living in KwaZulu-Natal… so many of these memories are based on my time here.

The past few weeks have allowed me moments to be deeply reflective. It has made me consider the triumphs and challenges, the joys and sorrows, and the many moments that have made up the chapters of my story - not quite a book yet! I'm struck by a sense of gratitude for the wonderful opportunities that have come my way, the special people who have touched my heart, and the adventures that have sprung up and added spice to it all.

One of the comforting aspects of going into the next season is the wisdom gained along the way and the peace that comes with acquiring it. Time has been an exceptional teacher and I have come to really appreciate the value of connection and growth that happens over time. Oh, and learning to be a little more patient.

I’ve also grown to recognise that life is not just about achievements but about the relationships we nurture. Our journeys are enriched by the bonds we form, the connections we make, and the love we share with our family, friends and communities. The milestones we reach are not solitary achievements. They are shared victories that are made all the more meaningful by the presence and support of those who have stood by our side through it all.

As I enter the next season of my story, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. Life, with its infinite possibilities, continues to unfold before us, and I am eager to continue on adventures, embrace new experiences, and grow as an individual. Gosh, I still feel so young!

Speaking of moments, memories and stories, I hope you enjoy this edition of the magazine! It’s another good one with a little more focus on the stuff we men like, but it’s still a wonderful blend of all things amazing about our corner of the world.

Till the next edition, God bless.

Role of the Mode R n- d ay Man

Simon Sinek says we should always start with our “why”. I asked myself why I was drawn to writing about understanding the evolving role of the modern-day man, especially when it could be deemed a difficult topic. I was drawn to it by my own experiences and the belief that it isn’t spoken about as much as it needs to be. Using a sports analogy, a good team always talks about the best way to utilise all the players, and in society, there is no doubt men make up a part of the team.

So, what is the role of the modern-day man? The answer will be different for each of us which means there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ answer. What is true is that we’re living in an evolving world and the ‘rules of the game’ have changed. We need to work hard to catch up.

Around a year ago, I was fortunate to find a group of men who decided to meet weekly to discuss this exact topic. The group is diverse in age and background, but at its core everyone is dedicated to becoming a better man in a modern, evolving society. There is so much quality thought and behaviour that it’s tough to fit all I have learnt into this article. Here are a few good ones that helped us as we started our journey to answer the question.

Be your authentic self. In a pursuit to find our purpose and role, we cannot be anything less than our real, authentic selves in the room. Anything less means there is posturing or pretence and that gets in the way of growth. Men are competitive by nature, but if we’re to find our position in society, we need to be authentic, honest and real. We can be strong but gentle, tough but sympathetic, kind but assertive, fair

but competitive, and young but resourceful. It takes conscious effort and a commitment to develop ourselves.

Be engaged. Contribute so that everyone gets value. Listen, ask questions, tell stories and share experiences. We spend lots of our time playing games, swiping on dating apps, or scrolling through social media but we are losing the skill of real engagement. Our interaction with other men has also been tempered. A research study in 2021 said 27% of men had five close friends, down from 55% in 1990. We’ll better understand each other and society if we’re engaged with it.

Be vulnerable. Some of the moments with these other men have been life-changing. In a safe space, these men have been vulnerable, sharing challenges and hurt without judgement. They were supported and respected. The days of ‘suck it up’ and ‘men don’t share how they feel’ have changed and a more in-touch, vulnerable man is one who has deeper empathy and understanding. Vulnerability leads to greater wholeness.

Play your position. The best teams have players who know their strengths, who play in positions that best leverage their skills, and who are team players first. The game gets better when players play cohesively while valuing and respecting others on the field.

As I said, each journey to better understand your role will be different. What is important, though, is to keep thinking about it and find others to talk to. Engage, expand and know that there will always be a role for men on the team.

MEDICINE

Functional and Integrative Medicine

Dr Francois Ehlers

wHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU wANTED TO GO INTO AESTHETIC MEDICINE? Growing up with a father as a doctor meant the idea of medicine was planted at a very early stage of my life. However, my interest in aesthetic medicine began when I was presented with the opportunity to travel to Paris to attend one of the largest international congresses in aesthetics, IMCAS. It was here that my perspective on the field was radically transformed. I realised that aesthetics was not just Botox and fillers, but rather a field of medicine that combines science with artistry.

wHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE AS A MAN IN YOUR FIELD? The market in aesthetic medicine is dominated by female clientele. As a male practitioner, the ability to build rapport and be relatable

to your female patients is an important skill that requires practice. Patients will present to you in a vulnerable state, and it’s fundamental to be equipped with the emotional intelligence to acknowledge and empathise with their concerns so that they can develop trust in you as their doctor, whereas this trust might come more naturally with female practitioners.

wHAT ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR CAREER wOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE? Academics and education have always been passions of mine. As my skills and ability to deliver reproducible outcomes improved, I was fortunate enough to be invited to become a member of a faculty established by an independent Swiss dermatology company where I am afforded the privilege to educate and train new doctors interested in aesthetic

medicine using the latest evidencebased practices. As an educator, I strive to inspire hope, ignite imagination, and instill a love of learning in my students.

wHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY DAY AND CONTINUE YOUR IMPORTANT wORK? The answer is simple: the ability to transform lives. As an aesthetic medicine practitioner, you have the power to not only enhance someone's physical appearance but also boost their confidence, self-esteem and overall well-being.

When you see the smile on a patient's face after a successful procedure or hear about how their newfound confidence has positively impacted their personal and professional life, you realise that your work is so much more than just skin-deep.

From cardiology to orthopaedics, there are remarkable men who are doing great things in the medical field. From what inspires them to the challenges they face, they share the ins and outs of their lives as doctors.

Preserve . Restore. Radiate.

Dr Vincent Ehlers

wHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU wANTED TO GO INTO AESTHETIC MEDICINE? Early in my medical school journey, I realised that I was drawn toward doing procedures requiring fine motor skills and precision, making it inevitable that I would become a surgeon.

As I progressed through the years, this was a skill set that I continued to nurture. After being exposed to aesthetics and hair restoration, the idea of impacting performance through self-confidence resonated with me. I knew I had found my career path.

wHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE AS A MAN IN YOUR FIELD? In all honesty, this is

not a question I have pondered before. I do not recall encountering a situation as yet where I have been disadvantaged because I am a male. In my opinion, the only challenge of being a male in any industry would be sometimes managing and navigating around the egos of other men!

wHAT ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR CAREER wOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE? I have a passion for medical education and improving the standard of care within the industry.

At the end of 2022, I had the privilege of being invited to become a trainer for one of the largest aesthetic and dermatology companies in the world. This means I will

be involved in training and upskilling other doctors in the field.

wHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY DAY AND CONTINUE YOUR IMPORTANT wORK? I draw a significant amount of inspiration from my patients. It is rewarding to play a role in positively impacting a person's self-confidence and hearing how this influences their relationships and careers and motivates them to pursue new challenges.

South Africa has the potential to become the leading global destination for medical tourism. It is my mission to showcase our high standard of care so this can be recognised and become a reality.

Matters of the Heart

Dr Y.T. (Trishun) Singh

wHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU wANTED TO GO INTO CARDIOONCOLOGY? I have been a qualified cardiologist since 1986. About nine years ago, I attended a Cardiac Meeting in Europe. There was a whole afternoon session on cardio-oncology. I had vaguely heard about the field of cardio-oncology. I attended the afternoon session and realised how very important it was to be involved in this field. Cardiologists are often requested to assess the cardiac status of cancer patients who are about to receive or are already receiving cancer therapy such as chemotherapy and radiation. I also realised that all classes of chemotherapy and radiation,

particularly radiation to the chest, can have cardiovascular effects. It became blatantly apparent that, as cardiologists, we should have a reasonable knowledge of how to assess and manage cardiac complications of cancer patients, because they can be fatal.

wHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE AS A MAN IN YOUR FIELD? The challenge relates to oncology and haematology colleagues who need to be upskilled with regard to understanding the cardiovascular effects of the cancer drugs and radiation that they prescribe for their cancer patients. If the cardiovascular complications are not detected timeously and managed,

these patients may have a very successful result from cancer therapy, only to succumb to a cardiovascular event. Cardiovascular problems need to be detected before they become irreversible. The other challenge is dealing with healthcare funders who do not understand cardio-oncology and often do not want to pay for the cardio-oncology assessments. The National Department of Health also needs to understand the importance of cardio-oncology.

wHAT ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR CAREER wOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE? The highlight of my career was becoming the first certified Cardio-Oncologist in Sub-Saharan Africa certified by the International Cardio-Oncology Society (ICOS). This certification was awarded to me in November 2020. In January of 2023, my Cardio-Oncology Unit at Netcare Umhlanga Hospital was the first CardioOncology Centre in Sub-Saharan Africa to be recognised as a Centre of Excellence by ICOS.

wHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY DAY AND CONTINUE YOUR IMPORTANT wORK? Cardio-oncology is a fascinating field, and I really do enjoy working with cancer patients. It is so gratifying when one is able to mitigate early enough against the cardiovascular complications of cancer therapy. It is great to work with my oncology and haematology colleagues to help them obtain optimal results for their cancer patients, while I avoid such patients succumbing to a cardiovascular event. This inspires me to get up early every day and get to my rooms to be able to manage such patients. My advice to all doctors involved with cancer care is: "Do not allow the cancer patient of today to die from a cardiovascular event tomorrow.”

Keeping You Moving

Dr John N De Beer

wHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU wANTED TO GO INTO ORTHOPAEDICS?

I first realised that I was going to pursue a career in orthopaedics in 1997. I was doing my internship at Ngwelezane Hospital in Empangeni and went through all the other rotations prior to finishing my internship with orthopaedics. All of the other rotations that I did actually left me feeling very disillusioned about medicine. It wasn’t what I expected, having just finished medical school. It was only when I went into orthopaedics with Dr Paul Robinson that I fell in love with the discipline and decided to pursue it.

wHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE AS A MAN IN YOUR FIELD? As a man,

I think we have far fewer challenges in orthopaedics. It is quite a physical discipline. There are a lot of sports people that we see. I don’t experience any challenges as a male in the orthopaedic setting.

wHAT ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR CAREER wOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE?

I think one of the highlights of my career was recently. At my practice at Busamed Gateway Private Hospital, I saw a lady that came back after surgery. She has cerebral palsy and had been wheelchair-bound since childhood. We removed bony bridges around the pelvis and lengthened certain muscle groups which has allowed her to be able to walk on crutches. It’s very rewarding

when patients are happy at follow-ups and their lives have been improved upon.

wHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY DAY AND CONTINUE YOUR IMPORTANT wORK? What inspires us as orthopaedic surgeons is probably the advancements in the medical sciences.

The engineers have made progress in equipment and techniques that have allowed us to make surgery more effective and less invasive.

I’m very excited to see what is going to happen in orthopaedics in the next five to 10 years with the rate at which things are progressing.

Specialised Gynaecological and Obstetric Care

Dr Timothy Berios

wHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU wANTED TO GO INTO GYNAECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS? During my medical school years at the University of Witwatersrand and later at the University of Pretoria, I became captivated by the incredible intricacies of the female reproductive system. The more I learned, the more I realised the profound impact that reproductive health has on a woman's overall well-being.

My time at Baragwanath Hospital during clinical rotations showed me just how crucial it is for women to have access to high-quality healthcare. From preventive screenings to prenatal care (pregnancy and childbirth) and treatments for gynaecological issues, I witnessed firsthand the importance of comprehensive care for women.

Inspired by the compassionate professors I worked with, I felt a deep calling to specialise in this field. What drew me in was the chance to form long-term relationships with my patients and guide them through the different stages of their reproductive lives. From navigating complex gynaecological health issues to supporting women through the miraculous journey of pregnancy and childbirth, I found my true calling.

In 2000, I took the leap and opened my own private practice in KZN. Since then, I have remained dedicated to expanding my knowledge and staying up-to-date with the latest technology and procedures. It's crucial to me that I can offer the best care possible to every woman who entrusts me with her health.

wHAT ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR CAREER wOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE?

On a personal note, becoming a parent myself has been one of the greatest achievements of my life. It has given me a whole new appreciation for the joy and challenges that come with bringing new life into the world.

wHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY DAY AND CONTINUE YOUR IMPORTANT wORK?I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of countless women. It's an honour to be part of such a meaningful and important career, and I look forward to continuing this journey with my patients.

Inside Dentistry

wHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU wANTED TO GO INTO DENTISTRY?

During a school rugby practice session, an unfortunate clash of heads resulted in fractured front teeth, which required visits to our local dentist and, later, our orthodontist. Though uncomfortable, these visits made me realise that dentists have the ability to restore health and happiness by giving someone something they have

lost. Now, years later, as a dentist with a special interest in implant dentistry, I am privileged to facilitate that process on a daily basis.

wHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE AS A MAN IN YOUR FIELD? I find the greatest joy in the detail and precision required to excel in implant dentistry. It is an extremely detail-oriented and outcome-

driven environment that challenges and excites, however, it also poses its greatest obstacle. To remain consistent in the profession and sustain the effort, finding a counterbalance in life is key. For me, that balance is restored whenever I'm at a local beach with a fly rod in hand. There is artistic expression in tying a big semper fly, there is adventure in the mission to find new water, and there is the thrill of the take and the feeling of line tearing off a fly reel. Balance restored.

wHAT ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR CAREER wOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE? A definite highlight of my career has been the opportunities I've had to develop and promote the profession through education. Over the course of my eleven years in private practice, at The Cosmetic and Dental Emporium, I've had the privilege of teaching and mentoring on numerous platforms, with many colleagues spending weeks and at times even months at my practices.

wHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY DAY AND CONTINUE YOUR IMPORTANT wORK? I am passionate about researching and discerning which technologies would be the best to improve treatment outcomes and the patient experience. Travelling abroad to visit international colleagues and academic facilities is not only a great opportunity for growth and for finding inspiration, but it also serves to validate one’s own methods of practice against a global standard. This year, I am excited to return to Switzerland and visit Brazil for the first time.

Made Fantasy Reality

Sunsets & Mermaids

Sunsets & Mermaids was created as a place where dreams and folklore come to life. Biaggo Pellicia and Chef Brendon Newport have poured new life, magic and love into this restaurant, and it has quickly become a local favourite in Umhlanga Village.

The name denotes the vision for the restaurant. “Something that paints a mental picture for customers,” says Biaggo, “is relatable to the Durban market and talks about our origins – surfing and a casual beach vibe.”

Sunsets & Mermaids is a metaphor for the culture of the eatery and references

the tempo of the restaurant hours, from early morning (for breakfast) to late in the evening (for sundowners and dinner) - times when the mythical mermaids were reported to ‘come out’ of the sea!

We all know that mermaids are a figment of our imagination, but at Sunsets & Mermaids, they aim to make dreams a reality for diners. The elements of the menu are fantastic and key to the heartbeat of the business. Having a chef as talented as Brendon allows them to introduce new ingredients and dishes and test the market to create a niche and unique menu. The new, Italian-inspired additions to the menu were contributed by

Biaggo. They are based on his experiences of living in Italy, especially in the small, picturesque coastal towns.

The focus is on seafood, another reference to the name, location and decor. The blue floor represents water, and there are other little elements that seem ‘ordinary’ on the surface, but all have their own special story. To reinforce the name, the decor is a retro 70s/80s Miami/ Durban vibe with a Caribbean beach bar look and feel, which is where the famous Tiki Bar comes in! Looking at the location, Biaggo saw unlimited opportunity and potential. Along with a great team, led by Chef Brendon Newport in the kitchen, he bought

into the vision of creating a restaurant legacy that would provide long-lasting memories for diners. “It was going to be a challenge for a number of reasons,” Biaggo explains. “But when you put everything on the line, you just have added motivation and drive.”

So, let’s look at the men behind the brand. Biaggo went to Kearsney College and, after school, he thought of running Amici Café at La Lucia Mall alongside his father, who taught him everything he knows when it comes to being a restaurateur. While he was home on holiday in 2020, his father unexpectedly passed from COVID, which marked the next phase of Biaggo’s restaurant career. “My favourite thing about Sunsets & Mermaids and being in the

Village is that we have a unique space with fantastic food and diners who want to share that with us,” he expresses fondly.

Chef Brendon is one of Durban’s most highly regarded chefs, with almost 30 years in the industry! “Once I started doing my homework, I realised that he was the perfect partner for everything I’d dreamed of and wanted to achieve at Sunsets & Mermaids,” Biaggo shares.

He is incredibly talented, with a pure and unrivalled passion for food, and you can see it in every dish served. His favourite thing about working at the restaurant is the range of customers, from all over the country and the world, with different expectations and the challenge of meeting them. He thrives

on this and loves coming out of the kitchen and interacting with the diners. Umhlanga Village is known for being a great area to experience Umhlanga’s nightlife, and Sunsets & Mermaids is the best spot to do it! With their regular events like Mermaids Night every Wednesday, where ladies can get half-price cocktails and 30% off sushi, girls’ night out will never be the same. They also have DJs and live music, when well-known local musicians make surprise, unscheduled appearances at the restaurant to entertain guests.

Visit Sunsets & Mermaids to experience the magic for yourself.

cristina Govender Take Luxury Home

Umhlanga has taken a dive into luxury. The Platinum Walk in Oceans Mall has been the talk of Umhlanga since its launch in March. For the first time in KwaZuluNatal, a mall has been able to attract many international fashion brands and the attention of the world.

Part of the mixed Oceans development, from the conception of the project, an important factor was how to distinguish

Oceans Mall from the other malls and shopping centres around it. Thus, the idea of having a high-end selection of stores in the mall to fill in the gap in the market was conceived and included in the design of the development. The team realised that the area needed these brands and took up the challenge to bring them here.

We have a bustling and diverse market in Umhlanga, with so much to offer locals and visitors alike.

What You’ll Find at the Platinum Walk

• dolce & Gabbana

• Gucci

• Michael Kors

• Jimmy choo

• Lacoste

• diesel

• Paul & shark

• aeronautica Militare

• Monbeau afrique (opening soon)

• uLas (umhlanga Laser & aesthetic spa)

• signature restaurant (opening soon)

• emporio armani

• Burberry (opening soon)

• Montblanc (opening soon)

• Hugo Boss

From the gorgeous homes to the promenade and beaches, there is no shortage of attractions and activities. International investors saw the potential in the area and took notice of what the Oceans development team was trying to achieve. As a first for KwaZulu-Natal, there was a gap in the market for a range of high-end products and services, as people from the province would often travel to other parts of the country for a luxury shopping experience.

www.theumhlangamagazine.co.za | 27

A lot of planning and research was put into this project before anything could begin. Aside from the research the Oceans development team conducted, investors also extensively looked into the area and the potential advantage and disadvantages of investing here. They checked the disposable income statistics at casinos and other malls, the style of the homes, and any other developments happening in the area to gauge the spending habits of the people who live here. What they found was a thriving community and an optimal market for them to invest in. Having these internationally acclaimed brands invest in our economy shows the confidence they have in our country and province. By welcoming these brands to Umhlanga, we have effectively put ourselves on the world map. The Oceans Mall has become an official branch on these stores’ locations. It is mind-blowing to realise that we have brought the world to Umhlanga!

There has been a perception of Durban as not being as high-end or up-to-date as the other provinces, such as Gauteng and Western Cape. The Platinum Walk sets Umhlanga apart. It is an attraction to add to all of the

iconic landmarks which are so beloved, giving people all the more reason to visit Durban.

This boost in visitors has also been great for the tourism industry and the economy. People from all over the country are coming here and spending money, making the Platinum Walk the success everyone had hoped it would be. The relationship between Oceans Mall and Radisson Blu Hotel has also proved to be fortuitous. The lifestyle created by the luxury offerings of Radisson Blu and Oceans Mall, like the supercar parking and Platinum Walk,

has elevated the status of Umhlanga as a high-end destination on a global scale. Already boasting brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, Aeronautica, Versace and Gucci among others, we are looking forward to welcoming more brands in the near future. It’s wonderful to see people coming to our beautiful town and seeing how the new mall and businesses are thriving, and it’s exciting to watch how everything is growing.

Meet a lifesaving swimmer, enduro motorist, Olympic athlete, and high-achieving golf player living in our town.

Words Kai coates

We have so many highachieving athletes living in Umhlanga who deserve their time in the limelight. We met four people who have achieved great things in their respective sports.

Age is truly just a number for Carryl van Bassen. At almost 60 years old, she is still doing what she loves, lifesaving. As a child, Carryl had remedial problems so she tried many different types of sports and fell in love with swimming. Her passion led her to get her South African Springbok Colours at 16 years old and a South Africa Sports Merit, awarded by the President himself. She is now part of the Umhlanga Rocks Lifesaving Club.

Carryl has furthered her love for the sport by participating in stillwater lifesaving and has won several titles. Last year, she competed in Italy at the Masters Lifesaving World Championship, winning one gold and two bronze medals. In March 2023, she competed in the South African Swimming Masters Championship in Nelspruit and won three gold medals.

She also recently went to Cardiff, UK, for the UK Lifesaving Masters Competition and won one gold and three silver.

Carryl won nine gold medals and broke two South African records in her age group in Gqeberha in March. She will head to Bruges in Belgium to compete in the EU stillwater lifesaving masters in September 2023 and then in Australia next year.

Next, we have George Harvey. Originally from Zimbabwe, he has made a name for himself in the golfing world, with achievements such as receiving International Golf Team Colours in 1976, a World Best Ranked Amateur Golfer Award in 1976, nine amateur club championship wins (1972 to 1977), and the South African Golf Championship title in 1973 and 1976. George was a PGA Professional and is also an honorary life member of the PGA. He achieved the Advanced Fellow Category for the PGA and landed himself in the Hall of Fame in Cape Town. And that’s not all George has accomplished! In 1974, he won the Rhodesian Open

www.theumhlangamagazine.co.za | 31
people

Championship, and, a year later, he won the World Paris Championship in Bogota, Columbia. George was also awarded PGA Teacher of the Year in 2009.

George’s passion led him to help others grow the sport. He designed the MECC driving range in 1999 and was even a commentator for the SA Open and PGA Championships from 1991 to 1995. He was also a coach/manager for the

Ernie Els Foundation from 2009 to 2014, where he coached 16 Springbok Golfers.

The mind is a powerful tool, and once controlled and unlocked for optimal use, it can make you unstoppable. Meet Zakithi Nene, an Olympic 400-metre athlete. His journey begins in his hometown of Ladysmith. During school, he loved running and excelled in the sport. He broke the KZN 400-metre record at just 15 years old! As a young

kid, Zakithi’s role model was another great athlete at that time, Kirani James. “Kirani was a very young athlete making waves in the 400-metre sphere, and he won the Olympics at just 20 years old.”

As Zakithi got older, his skills developed and he started looking up to Wayde van Niekerk. “I have never really been short of inspiration throughout my career.”

One of his biggest accomplishments is qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. His best season thus far has

32 | www.theumhlangamagazine.co.za

been in 2022, where he finished the year ranked ninth in the world. Zakithi also won the South African 400-metre national title in 2021 and competed in a 400-metre race where he ran a time of 45.74 seconds.

Zakithi is still in his prime as a young athlete and continues to grow his career. Enduro motorbiking isn’t for the fainthearted. Alistair Feuilherade’s story began in matric when one of his friends got a

bike. After some negotiations with his dad, he was given his first bike, a 2003 Yamaha YZ 250. After a few sessions around the track, Alistair thought he was ready for the mountains. “I quickly realised that riding enduro bikes through tough terrain required fitness, skill, and technique.” He knew he would have to constantly improve as a rider, but he loved the challenge. Alistair started competing when he was 20 years

old. He entered Roof of Africa 2008, which is the sport's pinnacle event in South Africa.

“I trained hard for it and finished third in Bronze Class.” Once you finish the Bronze Class, you move on to the Silver Class, which he finished the following year. Alistar then had a new challenge: to complete the Gold Class. It took three attempts, but, in 2011, he crossed the finish line and proudly wore his gold medal.

Alistair then started his own business and a family, so riding took a back seat for a while. Two years ago, he decided to get back on the bike. “My most current greatest achievement is finishing last year's Roof of Africa Gold Class.”

Umhlanga is definitely not short of incredibly talented athletes! We can’t wait to see what Carryl, George, Zakithi and Alistair do next.

Gateway Is Ready to Sashay at #HDJ23

As the official mall partner of the Hollywoodbets Durban July (HDJ), Gateway has a rich legacy of supporting this standout event on the country’s fashion calendar. The fashion-forward mall has been associated with the HDJ Young Designer Award (YDA) for over a decade, a competition which allows Durban’s talented young fashion designers to be noticed and make their debut in this fiercely competitive industry.

The YDA Semi-Finalists Fashion Show will be held in Gateway’s Atrium on 14 June from 6 p.m. Just over two weeks before the race day, it’s a time when expectations and anticipation run high. The fashion show is the 20 semi-finalists’ last chance to impress judges, and it is usually their first showing at a full-production fashion

show. “We are thrilled to be making Durban’s young talents’ dreams come true with our sponsorship of the show and R40 000 worth in prizes for the competition winners,” says Michelle Shelley, Gateway’s Marketing Manager.

Many past YDA winners have carved out successful careers in the fashion industry, and this year should be no different. The “Out Of This World” theme places no limits on creative interpretation and the audience can look forward to being wowed by fresh designs never seen before.

Ready-to-wear Fashion Stakes

Following on from the young designers, brands from the mall will fire up the runway with their latest looks. This year’s theme is an invitation to let ‘your

imagination run wild’ and, with Gateway’s wide range of fashion and accessories, those ‘out there’ creative ideas are within reach.

From cleverly styling a few choice pieces to going for a high-end off-the-peg look, the mall has a variety of men’s and women’s fashion outlets from which to choose. The HDJ creates a once-a-year platform for fashion to strut its stuff, and Gateway will once again occupy a premium position on the catwalk.

Competitions, activations and tenant participation will celebrate everything fashion, building up from June. Follow Gateway on social media for real-time updates.

IIE-Vega is an educational brand of The Independent Institute of Education. The school is ideally positioned to meet the rapidly growing needs of the industry. This is by supplying students with the conceptual, strategic and practical skill sets required to rise to the challenge of the future.

An IIE degree is of the exact standard as one found in any public university or private university. IIE qualifications have a strong focus on brand leadership, brand management, brand innovation, brand strategy and creative brand communication. IIE-Vega's teaching philosophy is built on the mantra of “wisdom with magic”. This

reflects that the essence of branding lies in the fusion of strategy and creativity.

An IIE-Vega student graduates with a deep understanding that the most effective strategy is inherently creative. Brand and business strategies that merely repeat existing practices limit the true potential of the marketplace. IIE-Vega knows this. That’s why the principle of innovation lies at the heart of IIE-Vega's educational vision. The same truth applies in the teaching and learning environment. Innovation allows this institution to equip students for future leadership. IIE-Vega students are constantly immersed in live briefs from industry clients. As a result, when they

graduate, they are already well-versed in the turbulence of 'the real world' and slot seamlessly into any industry environment.

The stellar careers of many highly successful alumni are a testament to the success of this methodology. Furthermore, frequent interaction with the top-tier professionals and academics of the IIEVega Advisory Council helps keep curricula in line with the latest industry innovations. Level Up

Whether on mobile, PC or console, everyone has interacted with video games in one way or another. KiLAB Gaming gives me some insight into the world of video game content creation and game modification (or ‘modding’).

Seeing how much the South African gaming community has grown in the last few years is awesome. With local gamers using platforms like YouTube and Twitch and new conventions in our country promoting gaming, its popularity has grown exponentially! I spoke to resident gamer and YouTuber Skye Wigley (a.k.a. KiLAB Gaming) about how he developed a love for gaming and pursued a career in video game content creation.

“The first game I remember playing was Clash of Clans on my father’s phone,” he

shares. Next, he discovered other mobile games like Angry Birds, Jet Pack Joy Ride and the classic Plants vs. Zombies. From there, he progressed to more strategic games like Age of Empires, which opened his world up to mods. “One of my uncles who had also played the game showed me some secret codes that let you spawn in items and progress faster. At the time, I found this mindblowing,” he explains.

For those unfamiliar with modding, I asked Skye to explain it as simply as he could: “It is the process of adding new

features to a game through external code developed by the game’s community.” They can change how a game looks, such as through different themes, and give you additional items in a game that are normally unavailable.

The next step in his journey was being introduced to Minecraft and PC gaming by his friend in 2015. He also chose his ‘gamertag’ (online username), KiLAB Gaming, at that time. “It stands for Killing It Like A Boss. Later on, I spelt it with a lowercase ‘i’ to stop American players from mispronouncing it.”

42 | www.theumhlangamagazine.co.za
www.theumhlangamagazine.co.za | 43

He then purchased his own Minecraft account and explored the many servers on the game. A server is a connected network where players can interact and play the game in real time.

He became curious about what he saw on these servers, spurring him to create a video about it on YouTube. “After posting the video on an old, now inactive YouTube channel, I noticed more views than normal,” he said. “A few months later, a friend of mine messaged me saying that the video had over 12 000 views.” This motivated him to create his current channel.

“After posting a lot of different content, I started making videos about Minecraft mods. These videos did well, so I made more of them,” he shares. His videos now focus on reviewing different mods for Minecraft and streaming server gameplay. He first tests the mods, looking out for both advantages and missing features. “I also suggest possible changes or fixes for the mod developers.”

Fast approaching 15 000 subscribers, his audience learns about which mods are worth investing in as some of them cost real-world money. “My goal is to provide entertaining videos with my

honest opinions to expand and improve the Minecraft modding community,” Skye expresses.

With his passion for computers and technology, he wanted to go into software development and computer security. “I spent some time learning basic coding skills and took a few courses on computer security,” he elaborates. “I would have likely studied this further if my YouTube career did not pick up.” He found video editing to be really interesting and even did some part-time editing work which helped his channel in the long run. “As someone who really enjoys video editing and gaming, I can’t tell you how privileged I feel being able to do this full time.”

He plans to experiment with new types of content and expand his audience. “I am also currently recruiting mod developers to create my very own mod for my community. This is something my viewers have been asking me to do for a long time,” he informs. He also plans to start a second channel to post playthrough content where he plays video games he finds interesting for viewers.

“When it comes to advising anyone else wanting to create a YouTube channel, I’d first ask what their motive is,” he

contemplates. “I spend more time researching, writing scripts and editing videos than actually playing games.” Even with all the work that goes into creating videos, he still wouldn’t trade it for the world. He advises, “Post a video once a week, learn from every video, and make the next one better than the previous. Start experimenting with different ideas and styles of videos. Keep posting until you find a topic or style that gains traction.”

It’s exciting to see how our local gamers and content creators are gaining traction. It’s even more intriguing to see how the community is growing and more people are becoming aware of it.

oppressive racial order of the past, but also as an instigator for change in this country.

There’s a reason Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide. According to the Japanese, everyone has an “ikigai” — a reason for living. Having a strong sense of ikigai — where what you love, what you’re good at, what you can

get paid for, and what the world needs all overlap — means that each day is infused with meaning. “One of the unintended — yet positive — consequences of the [pandemic] is that it is forcing people to re-evaluate their jobs, careers, and lives. Use this time wisely, find your personal ikigai, and live your best life.” Forbes

Umhlanga

Lighthouse A LOCAL LANDMARK

It’s difficult to picture Umhlanga without its iconic red and white lighthouse that towers over the shore. It’s majestic, elegant and surprisingly well-kept considering it's just a few feet from the ocean. With the Umhlanga Lighthouse being so symbolic of the Umhlanga beachfront, we thought it was time to delve into its rich history.

Did you know that The Oyster Box Hotel (built in 1869 as the first beach cottage in the area) has always been the lighthouse’s official warden or ‘custodian’? They helped us out with a few details about the story behind the lighthouse.

Before the Umhlanga Lighthouse was built, the Bluff Lighthouse stood in its place from 1869. Because this lighthouse had deteriorated beyond repair, it was time to replace it. Designed by the Office of the Chief Civil Engineer and constructed by the System Harbour Engineer, the Umhlanga lighthouse was completed in 1954. The structure is 21 metres high with a range of light of 24 nautical miles.

Like any story behind an old building, there were some challenges. Interestingly, the structure was originally going to be built where The Oyster Box Hotel’s swimming pool sits today, however, in January 1953,

heavy erosion occurred in that designated spot when 330 millimetres of rain fell in less than one day. It was decided it would be cheaper to build the lighthouse closer to the ocean on a solid rock foundation. Speaking of money, the cost of the lighthouse was a pricey R23 838!

The lighthouse was also commissioned only in 1954 due to delays with the decision to include a subsidiary red-sector light (a fixed light installed on the floor below the main revolving light) which had to be imported from England. This fixed light now helps ships waiting to anchor in the outer anchorage of Durban Harbour to keep track

Did You Know?

• There are 45 active lighthouses in South Africa - the Umhlanga Lighthouse being one of them.

• It took only four days and 19 hours to build the cylindrical tower! Talk about a tight deadline…

• It takes roughly 395 litres of paint to give the lighthouse’s interior, exterior and lantern house a fresh coat of paint (at a cost of R1.1 million in 2020).

• The main light of the lighthouse flashes three times every 20 seconds

of their position. If the red light can be seen from the ship, it means they are too close to the shore!

Before the lighthouse was up and running, there was no customary three-month notice issued to mariners worldwide, so warnings had to be broadcasted from local maritime radio stations to tell shipmasters of the new lighthouse.

So, why was the iconic white with a red top and lantern house pattern chosen? This is our lighthouse’s daymark, which is a unique marker to help mariners see and identify the lighthouse during the day. You can be sure that the lighthouse will stay this way for MANY years.

Today, the lighthouse is automatic and unmanned. It warns ships of hidden dangers and welcomes them to Durban Harbour.

The lighthouse has never had a ‘keeper’, but you may wonder what responsibilities The Oyster Box Hotel has as its ‘custodian’. Well, before the hotel’s renovation in 2007, the lighthouse controls used to be situated within the hotel office. Now, the lighthouse has an alarm system that is connected to the hotel’s reception, which triggers if there’s equipment failure,

a fire or unauthorised entry. If the alarm goes off, the hotel staff must notify the maintenance depot in Durban. The Oyster Box Hotel is also responsible for letting Portnet’s Lighthouse Service know if the light isn’t working, however, that is where it ends! Transnet National Ports Authority are responsible for changing the light and any other upkeep of the lighthouse.

Every five years, the gorgeous tower gets a fresh coat of paint as part of its routine

maintenance, with the latest repaint being in 2020. This is not an easy job, as the paint has to withstand tough conditions and the maintenance itself must have little impact on the environment.

The next time you take a walk on the promenade or spoil yourself with the trip to The Oyster Box Hotel’s Lighthouse Bar, take a moment to truly appreciate our iconic local landmark, its interesting history, and the beauty it brings to our coastline.

The Art of Beauty

When you enter Makeup by Wes Studio, you are transported to a world of beauty where everyone is welcome, and you leave feeling pampered and beautiful. The ambient lighting gives the studio the impression of high fashion and the decor invites you to take a closer look at what’s inside. Jordyn and I had the opportunity to experience some of the treatments they offer. Among their repertoire are hair, makeup, nails, lashes and aesthetic treatments such as IV drips and spa sessions.

We were greeted by Wes who was such a gracious host. He made us feel right at home. While sipping on a delicious cappuccino, we spoke to him about his journey to owning his salon and creating a makeup brand.

“I have always been artistic, even from a young age,” he shared. During high school, Wes gained popularity via word of mouth when he did makeup looks for his friends

and family. “After school, I got a part-time job, saved up, and went to makeup school,” he recalled. “I was actually the first boy to go to SOMA (School of Makeup Artistry) which was a big deal.”

From there, he worked at a salon in Umhlanga before being able to open his own. “My vision for this salon was for it to be a place where people can walk in and feel comfortable, snap a few pictures of them looking gorgeous, and just be free to be themselves, ” he explained. Looking around at the salon, you can see he has achieved just that.

Wes creates incredible makeup looks for every occasion, from casual, everyday makeup to glamorous full faces for events. He has even created his own makeup line! Often clients purchase a few of his products afterward to recreate some of the magic at home.

After our interesting chat, it was off to the basins to get our hair washed. Stabhiso and Babalwa, the two hair stylists, took excellent

care of us. We both enjoyed much-needed head and shoulder massages. They applied a hair mask to soften the hair and massaged it in. Her hands were firm, careful and thorough as they worked through our hair.

From there, it was time to dry and style. Wes got to work styling my hair while Stabhiso worked on Jordyn. They decided to do a signature look on us, their 90s-style voluminous curls. Our hair was put up into curlers, making us look quite regal while we waited for them to set.

When they removed the curlers, I hardly recognised my hair. The way Wes styled it really showed off the colour and layers of my hair. Jordyn’s normally straight hair fell down into bouncy curls. She loved the body her hair had. We were sad to leave but loved every minute of the experience.

Makeup by Wes Studio welcomes you and loves spoiling you!

Understanding Pain and Its Treatment

We have all experienced physical pain at some stage in our lives, be it from an illness, injury or ‘traumatic event’ like a motor vehicle accident. But, what is physical pain? Pain, as defined by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), “is an unpleasant sensory and/or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage”. In basic terms, pain is a signal that the body sends to avoid anything that may cause the body harm or injury.

In the exercise and rehabilitation profession, we deal with four main types of pain, which all have specific treatments.

ACUTE PAIN

This is pain that lasts for less than six months and is often caused by a specific injury or event such as surgery, broken or fractured bones, abrasions, burns or sporting injuries.

Acute pain is often accompanied by inflammation, so the best treatment is the “RICE” principle (rest, ice, compress, elevate). You can also seek treatment from medical professionals such as physiotherapists, as they will assist in reducing swelling, improving pain, and regaining pain-free movement.

CHRONIC PAIN

If you experience pain that lasts for longer than six months, you have chronic pain. It is a constant pain or discomfort that can affect you in your daily life and is usually a result of health conditions or joint and muscular pain.

Chronic pain is treated by targeting its cause. If the pain experienced is due to an illness, it is advisable that the person seek medical advice from a specialist physician or doctor. For chronic muscular or joint pain, along with possible pharmaceutical intervention, it is important that the cause of the pain is addressed with the help of a biokineticist.

NEUROPATHIC PAIN

This pain is due to nerve damage or damage to other parts of the nervous system. It is often described as stabbing, burning or shooting pain and can result in the person feeling pins and needles and/ or numbness and loss of touch sensitivity in the affected area.

Neuropathic pain almost always needs some sort of pharmaceutical or surgical intervention, but it can be managed conservatively when advised by a medical professional (should no surgical intervention be necessary) with a specialised treatment programme. In my experience, a combination of

physiotherapy, chiropractic or pain management therapy, and a mobility, strength and functional exercise programme prescribed by a biokineticist produces the best treatment outcomes.

NOCICEPTIVE PAIN

This pain is due to damage to body tissue. It can be described as a throbbing, sharp or aching pain and is usually caused by an external injury such as a blow to the leg during a sporting event, twisting your ankle or a fall.

When treating this type of pain, it is advised to allow the injury to heal. Initially, we look to treat the symptoms, and then we treat subsequent results of the injury such as muscular compensation, weakness, and bio-mechanical changes and adaptions.

If you are not sure what type of pain you are experiencing or how best to treat or manage it, then I strongly advise you to seek treatment or an assessment from your trusted medical professional.

CARLA is a biokineticist who owns a private practice in the Durban North and Kloof area. She has been practicing since 2017 and strongly believes that exercise and movement are important in health and wellness. carla@elitehealthsa.co.za

Your conditioned thoughts impact your behaviours, and these play a massive role in the outcomes you experience in your life. If your environment changes or shifts in a way that renders your thinking fundamentally outdated, you cannot adjust your behaviour. Your outcomes in that new environment will be negatively impacted. These shifts in the environment will happen whether we like it or not. The key is to be aware of the changes around you so that you can adjust your thinking towards whatever aspect of your life requires a more positive result.

In a little over 18 months, the South African property market has had to adjust to cumulative home loan interest rate increases of 60% as we move off the historic lows of 7% during COVID. Whilst this cumulative rate increase has taken 18 months, the real impact on the market has only been felt in the past six months. Demand has reduced as affordability becomes more challenging for prospective purchasers who are now making buying decisions at higher interest rates on all their debt.

For homeowners, the increased financial debt commitment can sometimes require difficult decisions. During times like these, we will experience more homes being placed on the market for sale.

There is, however, good news. Markets always move in cycles, and whilst we are experiencing the market as it is right now, a market exists where homes are selling and buyers are active.

The banks still have a very healthy appetite for lending and are competitive with their concessions on interest rates.

You always have options, provided you can adjust to the market as it is right now, and this may require a change in thinking. It’s difficult to time a market. Whilst you can delay a decision to buy or sell, there are times when this decision is taken away from you. Understanding where the market lies so you can make intelligent decisions is of utmost importance.

For sellers, setting a marketing price for your home right now is less about what you think your home may be worth and more about understanding what marketing price will elicit a response from buyers in the market in the form of enquiries, viewings and ultimately offers. An experienced agent will guide you through this process. For buyers, now is the time to fight for your most competitive home loan interest rate - do not just think that your bank will give you the lowest rate. They rarely do. An experienced agent and mortgage originator will guide you on this.

Making this adjustment, or shift in thinking, can be difficult, especially when expectations have already been set. While it may seem difficult, know that it’s never impossible.
