NOTE

remember. Shew, it’s tough having our kids on three continents. I know this is common for so many of us nowadays and something none of us enjoy. Fortunately, this year will be different because, once again, the Scott clan is together. We get to spend three incredible weeks together just bonding and connecting. We're all coming in from different countries, like a real Hallmark Christmas movie, to celebrate the holiday together.

O

ver the years, I’ve become more and more of a fan of Christmas and the holiday season. It’s not one specific thing but rather a collection of all the many small things accumulated over a lifetime of holidays that make it my favourite time of the year. I’ll even go as far as to share that I’ve grown to love seeing the Christmas tree go up, which is a subtle admission that I wasn’t always the biggest fan of the tree… but now I LOVE it. Lorinda and I have also been fortunate to celebrate Christmas differently over the last two years, spending it in the US. They really do go all out with lights, decorations and celebrations, and one of our favourite things to do is attend tree-lighting ceremonies in each of the small towns close to where we live when we are there. Each town does its own parade, closes down the main street, and packs it with food vendors, exhibitors and a market, making a real celebration of it all. It’s been a unique experience to have a ‘cold’ December where hot chocolate, winter jerseys and gloves are a standard as opposed to our long summer days around a pool and meat grilling away on a braai. It really was something memorable, but it also meant we celebrated Christmases without all of the close family together, in one place and at the same time. That was the really tough part since we’ve been doing Christmas together for as long as I can

This is what it’s all about, right? We push through the days, meet the deadlines, chase projects, and appreciate the gift of being able to work hard but the real blessing is the ability to spend quality time with those you love - be it family, friends or your community. Our proverbial cups are filled when we’re able to connect and laugh and hug those who matter the most. So, yes, I love this time of year, but I think it’s because I know every Christmas song, every decoration, every jingle and every bauble that I see go up in November means that I’m getting closer and closer to spending uninterrupted, quality time with the people I love most in the world. Yep, I’m a fan of Christmas and all it brings. To you and your family and friends, I hope you are able to celebrate the holiday and wish you a blessed Christmas. I hope you enjoy all the Christmas bits and pieces we’ve put together for you in our bumper Christmas edition and I really look forward to chatting with you again in the new year. God bless, merry Christmas and happy New Year.

DESCRIBE YOUR ULTIMATE FRIDAY NIGHT OUT An ultimate Friday night out for me includes two things: good food and good music. This one goes to Rockets for me.

WHERE CAN WE FIND THE BEST CUP OF COFFEE? I'm a coffee lover so this has to be the toughest question. There are so many great coffee shops in our area but for now, I will give it to Seattle Coffee Company, situated at Medstone Medical Centre.

WHERE IS A MUST-VISIT PLACE FOR A FIRST-TIMER IN UMHLANGA? Gateway Theatre of Shopping is one spot that I would suggest. It’s a destination mall that has something for everyone from food and entertainment to fashion, jewellery and even something for your little ones.

INSPIRATION

CONTENTMENT WORDS JECHOLIAH NAIDOO

W

hen the end of the year rolls around, it's common practice for people to look back on the year and try to measure if it was ‘good’ or ‘bad’. It usually looks different - some measure it by social engagements, some by financial gain, and others by overcoming a traumatic or stressful life event. I measure it by how content I am. Happiness comes and goes, but I've seen contentment even in my friend battling cancer. I've seen contentment when a friend's baby started walking. It made me wonder what contentment is, and if it can be used to measure happiness. I've had many lengthy conversations with different people on my travels, and the most content people are usually the ones who have what I would call a “spiritual worldview”. They subscribe to some notion that there is something more than just the “natural” world and the circumstances they find themselves in. All of them told me that they had an assurance of some kind. They were fully convinced of this and that's how they were able to, in that moment, be okay and move on afterward. I imagine myself in some of these difficult circumstances and ask myself, “Would I still be okay?” I also ask myself the question, “What would I need to know in those moments that would help me be okay?” It truly seemed to be all based

on some kind of knowledge that gave me comfort, empowerment, or even resilience. For myself, contentment starts with a line from the end of the 90s movie The Mummy. As he dies, the villain quotes, “Death is only the beginning.” The continual dying of “self” and “ego” has made my life not only weightless but hopeful. By living not for myself but for a purpose greater than my own, I have found that I can be pretty content anywhere, from the bustling cityscape of Seoul to the calm and quiet Himalayas. I look back on the year that has passed, and I no longer measure it in good things or bad things that have happened. Now I see it as a content life that I've lived and continue to live. How content are you and how do you measure it?

By living not for myself but for a purpose greater than my own, I have found that I can be pretty content anywhere

JECHOLIAH worked in the financial sector for 12 years before starting her own business, Rescue from Adulting, in 2020. She is also an ambassador for the missions department of Grace Life Church and travels locally and abroad, spreading hope wherever she goes. www.rescuefromadulting.com

Squid

in Romesco Sauce with Toasted Almonds and Fresh Basil This recipe is easy and absolutely delicious. Everyone licks their bowls when they’re finished! This dish can be made the day before. SERVES 8 INGREDIENTS • 2kg squid or calamari, cleaned (it can be baby squid, rings or tentacles) • 2 onions, peeled and finely diced • 3 cloves fresh garlic, peeled and chopped • 2 - 4 green chilli, depending on preference • 2 red peppers, cored and chopped • 4 ripe tomatoes (I am pedantic about this they must be well-ripened and sweet!) • 1 cup cream or coconut cream • 2 handfuls of fresh basil • 1 handful of toasted almonds METHOD 1. In a large pot, heat some olive oil and add the onions. Season with a little salt and fry on medium heat until almost cooked, stirring frequently. 2. When almost cooked, add in the garlic, chilli and red peppers and fry for a few more minutes. Add in the tomato, fry for a few more minutes, and then add in a cup of water or vegetable stock. Turn the heat down, cover with a lid and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring every five minutes. Remove the lid and then cook down until almost all the liquid is gone. 3. Add in the cream and cook for another 10 minutes, until your sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat. Add in one handful of the basil and then blend until smooth (I usually use a hand blender). Taste for seasoning and add salt to your liking. 4. When you are ready to serve, heat up a heavybased pot with a good splash of olive oil. Rinse the squid and dry well. When the oil is very hot, add the squid to the pot and season. Fry for a maximum of two minutes and then add in your sauce. Cook for another three minutes so the sauce is piping hot. 5. Remove from the heat, finish with pulled fresh basil leaves and the toasted almonds. A good bread for dipping is a must.

Prawns with My Favourite Sauce

This is a firm favourite over the holidays. I don’t have a name for the sauce, but it's just delicious. SERVES 8

Tip:

Chicken cooked in the sauce is delicious too.

INGREDIENTS • 800g whole prawns, vein removed • 300g butter • 2 tsp smoked paprika (this must be very good quality - I use locally made paprika from Ground Up) • 3 cloves fresh garlic, peeled and chopped • 1 - 4 red chilli, chopped, depending on your preference • Zest and juice of 2 lemons • 1 bunch of coriander, well washed, stems removed • 2 sachets of chicken or veg stock METHOD 1. In a medium-sized saucepan, slowly heat the butter. It is important not to burn it. Once just melted, add in the garlic, chilli, paprika and lemon zest. Stir over low heat for three to four minutes, allowing the garlic to soften and the spice to cook without burning. 2. Add in the lemon juice, three tablespoons of water and the stock. Stir for another minute and then remove from the heat. Add in the chopped coriander. 3. When you are ready to serve, season and oil the prawns slightly. You can either cook them on the braai or in a pan. I prefer the braai. Over a medium heat, cook the prawns on either side for two minutes. They will turn bright orange. Place a heavy-based cast iron pan or pot on the fire or the stove and heat the sauce in this. Finish the prawns in this sauce with a splash more lemon. This saucy prawn goes beautifully with fried rice or fresh sourdough and salad. W W W. T H E U M H L A N G A M A G A Z I N E . C O . Z A

with Summer Strawberries and Ginger Tuille SERVES 8 INGREDIENTS For the Namelaka • 200g milk • 10g liquid glucose (available at a chemist or Bake a Ton) • 5g gelatine powder • 370g white chocolate (Bake a Ton sells good quality white chocolate) • 400g creme fraiche • Zest of 2 lemons

METHOD For the Namelaka 1. In a saucepan, heat the milk and liquid glucose to just before boiling. Soak the gelatine in two teaspoons of water. Once the milk is hot, remove from the heat, add in the soaked gelatine, and then pour over the white chocolate. 2. Allow to stand for two minutes to melt the chocolate and then stir until smooth.

combined into a smooth batter. Do not overmix. 2. On a piece of greased parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, spread the mixture in a thin layer. Bake at 180°C until golden brown. Allow to cool and peel off the mat or sheet. These are best made fresh or stored in an airtight container. For Serving

For the Ginger Tuille • 2 egg whites (about 50g each) • 100g of icing sugar • 100g of flour • 30g butter, melted • 1 tsp dried ginger powder • Pinch of salt

Add in the lemon zest and crème fraiche and then blend with a hand blender until smooth. Seal well and refrigerate for at least eight hours. For the Ginger Tuille 1. In a stand mixer, whip the egg whites and sugar until fluffy. Add in the butter, flour, salt and ginger. Whip quickly until well

1. Wash the strawberries and cut them into quarters. Dish a generous dollop of namelaka into a bowl and top with strawberries and chards of the tuille. Granadilla and kiwi work really well with this dish too - the acidity cuts the richness and sweetness for an overall balance.

I have been so lucky to have played at some incredible festivals this year. Splashy Fen Festival was really cool as well as Beats in the Bush. At Beats, Tim and I were booked for an acoustic set on Friday night and an electronic set on Saturday night. It was really cool for us to show people that we can play two styles of music. But, I would have to say my biggest moment was being booked for Gcwalisa Spring Picnic at Kings Park Stadium. SAINT& &SUMMER Urban Fashion Design WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER

I

t started the way most brands do: some rough ideas scribbled onto a napkin over a couple of cocktails. SAINT&SUMMER was fashioned in the heat of a Durban December in 2013. The beauty of their coastal surroundings inspired two local ladies to create a unique range of sandals for women just like them. They were unapologetically fashion-forward with a strong desire for both comfort and class.

that came from a personal passion. They got busy fast! As moms and wives, they worked, worked out, met friends, travelled, gave advice, and kept everything organised. They followed trends and set them too! The duo created a shoe brand that fit into their lifestyle – something you can do anything in.

Sun-kissed skin, vibrant sunsets, punchy cocktail umbrellas, and sandy hues became the mood for their first range. Soon, the brand very quickly became a household name.

In 2021, the brand launched its first Men’s Collection and got the guys talking. Then, in winter of 2022, they launched their first Ladies Knitwear Collection. Later that year, a full line of Ladies Summer Apparel was launched. This was transformational for SAINT&SUMMER, but footwear still remained the focus and passion.

The idea behind the brand was to provide the modern woman with a range of stylish shoes

Ten years later, the heart and soul of the business remain the same. However, in

The creative team and buyers have been hard at work, curating a summer collection that is sure to knock you off your feet (pun not intended). You can expect some beautiful, vibrant designs from the summer 2023 collection. Featuring bold prints, bright colours, stylish designs and trend-setting combinations, you’re guaranteed to make a statement this holiday season. ust off Ridge Road on Burnham Drive stands Burnham House B&B, overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean. It’s a tranquil escape featuring an exquisite rose garden and koi pond in the front and an outdoor dining area and pool deck in the back, providing an uninterrupted view of the ocean. Jeannie Sarno, the current owner, purchased the B&B back in 2009 and has seen it through many challenges and triumphs. She has a small, dedicated team of people working with her from all over the world and different cultures for years. “When the opportunity first arose to purchase the B&B, I had just given birth to my third son,” she shares. “Unknown to us, he was born with oesophageal atresia. Imagine the situation: a new business, two toddlers and a sick baby that needed to travel to Italy for treatments!” As difficult as it was, she believes that these experiences made them resilient and able to face any adversity. Burnham House is rated four-star, with six en-suite bedrooms, five of which face the sea, as well as a stunning honeymoon/ luxury suite with a private balcony. You can

One of the rooms is actually pet-friendly, opening up onto the garden next to the pool area. This space is perfect for children and pets to roam freely and stay occupied. Another highlight is that the accommodation is completely off the grid, with solar panels and a borehole to offer their guests an uninterrupted supply of resources. Other features you can expect include a wholesome breakfast, excellent service and even freshly baked cookies! There is also an entertainment area with board games, a television and reading material. “We sure have come a long way and it’s through experiences like COVID, riots and floods that you realise the strength of your team and staff,” Jeannie expresses. The tourism sector, particularly, suffered during that time, but this team persevered and got through it all while giving their guests the best service possible and helping out those in the area. It was appropriate that their efforts were recognised by Durban Tourism this year. “When we had first been

nominated, I thought it was most likely a scam!” she exclaims. “I wondered how my little six-bedroom bed and breakfast could have been nominated for such a prestigious award.” Even the judging process hadn’t gone smoothly for them with the judges arriving late and only one room available to show them! Freak Shakes at Romano Ice Cream Thick and creamy milkshake on a hot day? The answer is always yes! We went on a quest to find the craziest milkshakes on the East Coast, and Romano Ice Cream’s freak shakes top the list. Their three flavours, Oreo Bomb, Big Bang and Cotton Candy, are extravagant and heavenly sweet, so we had to try them all. Cotton Candy is a bubblegum shake topped with marshmallows, sour worms, a sugar cone covered in sprinkles, candy floss, and white chocolate sauce, served with a side of even more sweets! The two chocolate shakes are extra decadent - a chocolate-dipped, cream-filled donut tops the Big Bang and generous amounts of cream and Oreos decorate the Oreo Bomb. The shake was deliciously creamy and the chocolate rims added a richer taste. If the freak shakes look too intimidating, Romano Ice Cream also offers regular shakes with tasty flavours such as Butter Cookies and Mocha Chocolate. @romanoicecream

Bubble Tea at Booba Beautea Bubble tea continues to be many people’s drink of choice, and Booba Beautea takes it to the next level! The stunning store sports a wall of flowers, and all their bubble milk and fruit bubble tea options are unique and beautifully created. We had to try their Signature Brown Sugar bubble milk tea (served hot or cold) - a black milk tea with handmade tapioca pearls and topped with cream cheese and sugar, which is flambéed right in front of you! The Booba Teddy (served cold) also comprises black milk tea and tapioca pearls, but comes with milk tea ice in the shape of a teddy bear - so cute! Sticking with unique ice cubes, the special series Sparkling Rose Tea tastes exactly like Turkish delight, decorated with a rose-shaped ice cube. The Mango Sago is a mango explosion! It’s a blend of creamy sago and fresh mango, finished off with mango bursting boba - definitely my favourite! @booba_beautea

FOOD + DRINK

Cocktails at Lucky Shaker A hidden drinks haven, Lucky Shaker is known for their original, creative cocktails, so we had to add them to our funkiest drinks tour. What also sets them apart is that they hand-make all their juices, syrups and bitters, leading to one-of-a-kind drinks that are truly made with love. We tried The Blush, one of Lucky Shaker’s “greatest hits”, made with Tanqueray London Dry gin, elderflower syrup, cranberry juice and lemon juice. Sweet and sour, it’s a refreshing cocktail that is easy to drink. If you enjoy something nuttier and spirit-forward, What the Shanky’s is a distinct concoction of Shanky’s Whip Irish Whiskey Liqueur, Rolo and coconut syrup, Frangelico and pineapple juice. This smooth cocktail incorporates chocolate and caramel flavours - a dessert in a glass! One for the ladies, Lucky Queen is a fan favourite, made with SKYY Vodka, mixed berries, pineapple juice and Bols Cherry Liqueur. Lucky Shaker makes a distinct cocktail for every taste preference, with new cocktails offered every week! @luckyshaker

Granitas at News Cafe Granita: an Italian semi-frozen dessert made from sugar, water and various flavourings. News Cafe has taken this traditional treat and created a fruity, iced drink you can sip on this summer! Each option provides a unique combination of tastes blended into a smooth, refreshing mixture. The Blueberry Citrus is filled to the brim with berries, with an added sourness from the lemonade as well as a hint of mint that ties it all together. Don’t be fooled by the green hue of Tropical Passion. Made with kiwi, passion fruit and apple, this granita still has a sweet taste. New to the menu is the Naartjie Cranberry Granita. An almost pinkish colour, this drink bursts with citrus flavours from the naartjie and tartness from the cranberry, complemented perfectly by sour lime. These drinks just scream summer! @news_cafe_umhlanga_ridge

name had to change to something that covered all that we do. It's a cool story actually: two stay-at-home moms, who missed our monthly estate magazines (we had recently moved to Ballito), purely by accident started the first estate mag for the estate we lived in. In a blink of an eye (and because of a bit of a competitive streak as a competing JHB business started chatting to local estates), we decided this two-man band needed to expand. That is how it all started!

Tell us a bit about when you joined FabMags Lorinda started Estate Press while I was still at Derivco. It wasn't too much longer after that that I resigned from corporate life and joined her in the business. From there we grew and expanded until where we are today. Obviously, roles have changed over time but it's been amazing to be a part of such a wonderful local story. What do you love most about working at FabMags? As one of the “older players” who's been around and on the team for a while, it is difficult to choose. I'd say my favourite thing is definitely the team. The results are 100% a result

We have always been KZN-focused (we have it all covered from Ballito to Midlands). Today, we are 16 staff members strong with 10 print mags (community and estate-based), three locally based business directories, five estate-based digital magazines, and two/ three under-license magazines for clients annually. As Justin always says, we are still successful because we LOVE what we do. We love the people we work with, we love the stories we get to tell, and we love being community-focused. What do you love most about working at FabMags? The team! When you have the right team around the table, it’s easy. I have been

of the amazing people who work together every day. They have such an inspiring ethos and dynamic. What is your favourite article of 2023 and why? Having to choose my favourite is like asking a parent to pick a favourite child. The exercise forced me to go back through many of our editions to be sure, and I found myself often second-guessing. My answer is “The Start of Forever” in the February/March 2023 edition of The Ballito Magazine. Why? It’s a blend of a few things. The Ballito has a soft spot in my heart, the story is carried on the cover (the cover photo itself is delightful in telling its own story), and lastly, the actual story is about love, new beginnings, hope and diversity. It makes me smile every time I read it.

blessed with the best of the best over the years. We employ for attitude and train for the rest - it has been a winning combination for sure! We work hard, laugh hard and sometimes stress hard, but when it counts, we pull together even harder. No one is an island, and working together to hit deadlines or targets is what truly makes this team special! What is your favourite article of 2023 and why? That’s a tough question, as there are so many good ones! I love that we highlight local women in business, all of the Midlands articles are super cool for us beach people, and the food and travel articles are great! I'd have to say “So South African” in the August/September 2023 edition of The Ballito Magazine - our Heritage Day biltong-focused menu. It was a special one because it was something different. We loved working with local suppliers and, most of all, we had a lot of fun coming up with the menus, cooking the food, and taking the photos. Loads of laughing and about 1000 photos later, the spread was exactly what we wanted it to look like!

B

ased in the vibrant town of Durban, interior design firm Fyfe Boyce has carved a niche for themselves with their distinctive designs that celebrate beauty and comfort. Founded by Bruce Fyfe and Kelsey Boyce, the duo have quickly garnered acclaim for crafting spaces that speak with a unique voice, transforming houses into extraordinary homes that echo the stories of those dwelling within. It was for this design ethos that the team was approached by the young and passionate owners of a fixer-upper in Umhlanga to transform their existing house into a standout home. The couple

74 |

W W W. T H E U M H L A N G A M A G A Z I N E . C O . Z A

sought a unique space that would reflect their dynamic personalities, with a specific affection for pink and an appreciation for the retro flair of Hollywood glamour and Palm Springs style. Responding to this brief, Fyfe Boyce set about reimagining the residence with a fresh, sophisticated take on the classic aesthetic, creating a contemporary homage to the vintage charm and the couple’s vibrant taste. The interior was developed with a harmonious colour scheme, where pastel pinks melded with a range of supportive shades to create a warm and inviting ambience. Deeper tones were used strategically to give the space depth and

a sense of luxury. The style of furniture throughout the home is a nod to midcentury design, offering clean and simple lines, yet updated with a contemporary flair to suit modern living. Materials vary from soft, inviting fabrics to polished metals, providing a subtle hint of elegance without becoming overbearing. In terms of accessories, geometric patterns and abstract shapes were used to add visual interest and a touch of retro glamour reminiscent of classic Hollywood. The variety of textures in the textiles introduces depth and tactile quality to each room, while the selected artworks, with their vibrant hues and lively designs, bring character and energy. Lighting solutions were chosen for their functional value as well as their aesthetic appeal, with fixtures that have a design influence from historic styles, yet reinterpreted with a fresh, modern approach.

HOME FEATURE

Statement furniture pieces include the black and white console in the dining room, with its bold, geometric pattern that immediately draws the eye, providing a stark, dramatic contrast to the softer surrounding hues. This piece anchors the space and lends a modern Art Deco touch that is both functional and sculptural. Equally beautiful is the circular couch in the sunken living room, with curves that offer a soft reprieve from the linear architecture of the room. Its clever design encourages conversation and engagement, promoting a sense of yesteryear when socialising. The couch's plush upholstery invites relaxation, while its form provides a unique focal

point that breaks up the traditional layout of seating arrangements. And, of course, a Malibu-inspired home is not complete without a statement outdoor bar, and this one doesn’t disappoint. It is the jewel in the crown of this vibrant house, a chic hub for sun-soaked pool parties and evening soirees. Washed in playful shades of pink, it invites guests to pull up a sleek white stool and sip on zesty cocktails under the warm Umhlanga sky. This al fresco bar, with its arches and circular silhouette, captures the essence of endless summer days, becoming the heart of joyful gatherings and lazy afternoons by the sparkling pool. It’s more than just a

feature; it’s the stage for memories in the making, where laughter mingles with the clink of ice cubes and the splash of water. In crafting this distinctive abode, Fyfe Boyce has masterfully blended whimsical elements with functional design, encapsulating a truly personal retreat for its owners. The result is a home that is not only a reflection of its inhabitants' zest for life but also a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design. As the sun sets on Umhlanga's horizon, the Pink Palace stands as a beacon of style and a sanctuary of modern comfort. www.fyfeboyce.co.za

DIY Christmas WREATH There’s nothing that gets me in the festive spirit more than decking out my home with Christmas decorations. Why not up the fun by making your own holiday wreath to welcome guests to your home? At this year’s The Fair with Flair (in support of The Christmas Fair Fund) Creative Workshop, I was able to get Cindy’s (from Love Laugh) step-by-step on how to create a wreath with gorgeous greenery. W W W. T H E U M H L A N G A M A G A Z I N E . C O . Z A

| 77

STEP ONE

STEP TWO

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

STEP THREE

• Metal ring with two circles (size depends on how big you want your wreath to be) • Scissors/shears • Bag of moss • Twine • 5 - 8 bouquets of plants, preferably long-lasting and driable (Cindy’s suggestions: eucalyptus (penny gum), Stoebe, common heather, fynbos, rosemary, geranium, olive and Craspedia) • 1 larger flower/plant (Cindy’s suggestion: proteas) (optional) • Florist tape • Florist wire • Decorative ribbon • Dried oranges slices, cinnamon sticks, dried chillis or other dried decorations • Glue gun (optional)

HOW TO MAKE YOUR WREATH STEP THREE

78 |

W W W. T H E U M H L A N G A M A G A Z I N E . C O . Z A

Step One: Create the Base You’re going to start by flatly

placing moss between the two circles on the metal ring and securing it by wrapping the twine tightly around it. If your twine ends, simply tie another piece to the end of it and continue. You can do two or three layers of moss, depending on how big you want the wreath to be. Don’t worry about being too neat here - the ‘crazier’ the moss looks, the better. Additionally, don’t fret if you can see the twine within the moss - this will be covered! When the entire ring is generously covered, your base is complete. Step Two: Bundle It Up Now it’s time to create the plant bundles that will bring your wreath to life. Grab a few stems from your different bouquets and cut them so they are roughly 15 to 20 centimetres in length. Then, you’re going to take florist tape and wrap it around the end of the bundle a few times, tightly so that the stems won’t fall out.

LOCAL

This is a basic bundle, but you can spruce it up. Add your decorative ribbon by tying it around half the bundle (do not cut the excess ribbon as this will hang from your wreath beautifully!). You can also add your dried decorative pieces and cinnamon sticks by tying them to the front of the bundle with florist wire. Again, do not cut off the excess wire, as you can attach the bundle to the metal ring with it. You will need roughly 20 to 30 different bundles, depending on how ‘full’ you want your wreath to look. Be creative! Note: Cindy suggests making one ‘centre’ or bigger bundle with your larger plant. Step Three: Your Wreath Takes Shape Start with your larger or centre bundle (if you made one). Place it at the bottom of the wreath, with the end of the bundle facing towards the middle circle, at a diagonal angle (so the plant/flower faces out the side of the wreath). Secure the bundle by wrapping a piece of the twine around it and tying it behind the wreath. Following the same direction as your centre bundle, you are going to place one of your smaller bundles right under it on the mossy base, with the end of the bundle facing towards

STEP FOUR

the outer circle, so the ends of the two bundles almost criss-cross. Secure it with the twine (or florist wire if you used it). Continue this with all the other bundles, following the same direction but alternating the angle at which the bundle is secured (with the end facing toward the middle or outer circle), until the wreath is fully covered. Note: You can also leave one-half of the wreath bare, with only the moss visible! Step Four: The Final Touches To finish it off, you can add more moss to bare spots, play around with the bundles so the twine is covered, and cut off excess pieces of twine. If you have a glue gun, you can also stick on extra dried orange slices.

Once your stunning, festive wreath is complete, tie a long piece of ribbon around the top of the wreath so you can hang it on your door! And voila! You have a personally made natural wreath that will be loved by your family and friends the whole festive season.

MY STORY PHOTOS GRANT PITCHER

Facing all kinds of challenges and conquering them to reach your goals requires an innate strength. Meet Ntokozo Magwaza, an aspiring pilot.

80 |

W W W. T H E U M H L A N G A M A G A Z I N E . C O . Z A

PEOPLE

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. My name is Ntokozo Magwaza, and I come from Eshowe where I have a big extended family. I currently live in Durban North on my church property where I co-lead the children’s ministry and serve as a video editor at Anthem Church. My deepest passion is to become an airline pilot and I am close to completing my training. TELL US ABOUT WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING A PILOT When I was little, I used to see planes flying over my rural area. I watched them with intrigue and wanted to learn more about them. When we were fortunate enough to have a TV at home, I used to watch the Air Crash Investigation TV series. Instead of being afraid, I considered what I would have done differently to save lives as a pilot in response to the different emergencies. I have to become a pilot thinking about it ignites an unexplainable excitement in me. My heart wants to burst, and I light up! WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE IN YOUR LIFE? The biggest influence in my journey is my drive to become a better version of myself and refusing to allow the conditions into which I was born to hinder what and who I want to be. My mom and dad passed on too early to raise, nurture and help me to

become a person they could be proud of. I always think of what kind of a young man they would want me to be: who chases his dreams, is kind, and always aspires to be better. I use thoughts like that to inspire me to reach for the stars. Another significant influence is my son. His smile as he cheers me on motivates me to do my best for him and to provide him with opportunities I never had. WHAT STAGE OF YOUR TRAINING ARE YOU CURRENTLY IN? I have completed my Private Pilot License, Night Rating and all my theoretical Commercial Pilot Licence exams. What remains is my Commercial Pilot Licence Multi-Engine Rating which requires me to have completed between 120 and 150 flight hours. This can take up to five months to complete depending on funding.

made it this far in my aviation journey and got this close to achieving my dream if it were not for people helping me. experience. I have to admit, Thanda delivered what I can only explain as some of the most unique animal encounters we have ever had on a safari so far.

THE GAME DRIVES Our weekend started with a quick but very delicious late lunch. We then left for our first game drive of the trip, with reasonably low expectations (as we have done many safaris and, at times, seen almost no animals). We go on the drives for the experience, but we are always hopeful of seeing something cool.

We sat and watched lions sleep out in the sun, while the younger lions showed their playful side, trying to wake up the older crowd. It was so special to watch real cat family dynamics right in front of us. We also saw very young cheetahs (still fluffy and rather un-coordinated) try their hand at stalking birds while mom kept an eye on them from afar. It was by far the cutest thing we have ever seen in the bush! We got close to elephants multiple times - so close we could see their skin texture and hear the mighty crunch as they ate.

How pleasantly surprised we were as our guide, Peace Nyawo, and our tracker, Sichivolo Myeni, worked really hard at making every drive an

quick, comfortable drive from Ballito into the bush is our family's ultimate spoil and preferred “breathing space”! During this weekend trip, we stayed at Thanda Tented Camp at Thanda Safari and absolutely loved it! From the moment we arrived, the staff were super attentive and friendly.

wallowing in the mud and the impressive elephants just one more time. We experienced some incredible sightings and there were many ‘safari firsts’ for us, which is always a bonus! As always, the midway sunup or sundowner stops were fabulous. We were amazed when we had one unexpected, close-up elephant viewing as we stood, very still and in awe, as he walked right past us while we sipped on Amarula and watched the sun go down. THE STAY The Luxury Tents were exactly that. These romantic safari suites are the ultimate in luxury camping. They are super comfy and all your needs are covered and met, with the option of a bath or shower in your tent to add to your preferred experience (the additional outdoor shower was also a big win!). The Meru-style tents, which feature wooden floors and are decorated with classic Victorian furniture and finishings, are such a wonderful surprise. Each tent has a large bedroom, private sundeck and en-suite bathroom. Two days were not enough to enjoy this area, and I would happily book three nights away to fully relish in the vast patio, with its stunning bush views, having a relaxed coffee. THE LAZY AREAS We spent a lot of time just relaxing, enjoying the fire pit area and singing

around the fire at night. Even though the pool was cold (this was a winter trip), we lazed around the rim-flow pool surrounded by sun loungers with cocktails in hand. It was the perfect spot to soak up the warm African sun and go for a quick dip. These areas are made for relaxing between food and game drives! THE FOOD One word: exceptional. At every sitting, the menu offered was fantastic - so much so that we had trouble deciding what to choose! To avoid food envy, we decided the best course of action was to order a variety of dishes and indulge in food sharing. The restaurant staff were so accommodating and easy-going. The chef came out at every meal to tell us a bit more about what was on his menu, which was such a nice touch and we appreciated getting his input. When asked, “What is good?”, his fabulous response was simply “Everything” (and he was right too!).

Every meal is an occasion and we loved the bush banquet in the boma area. Traditionally dressed Zulu tribesmen performed customary dances, adding to the evening’s festivities. The experience was very special. What is better than a true South African braai, pap and sous with all the bells and whistles enjoyed under the African stars? Perfection. Thanda Safari, you truly exceeded all our expectations. We will be back for sure. If you’re interested in visiting Thanda Safari, check out their website. Lastly, you’ll find that meeting your unique needs is expensive. If you’re building a personalised vitamin schedule with multiple vitamins and supplements, you’ll end up spending well into the thousands. Formulated by dieticians, Vitamin Club has developed the next generation in vitamin supplementation. Their easy-to-use online quiz ensures that your age, gender, diet, weight and fitness are accounted for. Based on your answers, they choose the type and combination of vitamins and dosage to help you achieve your health goals.

e all want to be healthier, right? In today’s fast-paced world, most of us have every intention of eating well and being healthy, but we often fall a little short on the nutrition front. A balanced diet remains the best way to obtain essential nutrients, however, this is not always possible, and supplementation can ensure that your requirements are met. While most people understand the benefits of vitamin supplements, making sure you’re getting the right combination to meet your needs is far from easy. Firstly, it's hard to know what vitamins and supplements you need without the help of a professional. Store shelves contain numerous vitamins and brands. How does one choose the right combination? How do you make sure that you’re getting high-quality vitamins and minerals? Sure, you could go with one of the generic

multivitamins, but that’s like wearing the same “one-size-fits-all” T-shirt as anyone else – it’s never going to be a perfect fit! On the other hand, if you get a recommendation from a dietician, you’ll find that taking multiple vitamins is inconvenient. Your individual needs likely require multiple bottles and containers that are almost certainly not the exact doses you require, must be opened daily, and run out at different times. This makes building a daily habit, which is essential to maintaining the right vitamin levels, much harder than it should be.

Their vitamins are manufactured in a category A laboratory that is registered with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and their research and testing teams make use of the highest-grade ingredients, high-tech analytical instruments and the latest manufacturing techniques when producing and testing the vitamins. Then comes the convenience factor! They deliver directly to your door, anywhere in the country, and the packaging is designed to make building a daily habit as simple as possible. Your vitamins come in 30 convenient sachets and they even put your name on the box! You can also add the whole family to a subscription. Local. Seasonal. Fresh. Circus Circus Chartwell WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER

D

ecember is all about relaxing and celebrating the hard work we’ve put into the year. So, if you’re looking for the ideal place to enjoy the best of the season, Circus Circus Chartwell is the place to be. Located on the iconic Chartwell Drive in Umhlanga, this restaurant boasts a tropical theme full of greenery which even extends to the design of their menus!

Crispy Squid, served with curry aïoli, carrot, purple cabbage, pickled ginger, peanuts and coriander, was the perfect way to begin our food journey. With red onion, carrot, peppadew and spiced Mozambican aïoli, the Cajun Crumbed Mushrooms had the whole table discussing how the flavours complemented each other. The Jalapeño Poppers challenged our bravery and spice tolerance and added a little kick for our tastebuds to enjoy.

We were welcomed by the amazing Hlobisile who took care of us throughout the entire experience. She guided us through their seasonal menu and suggested the best drinks and meals to try. We started off with a few refreshing cocktails to set the chilled mood, as we enjoyed the laidback atmosphere. Sipping on the Peach on the Beach, Blood Orange Gin Metropolitan and Circus Clown, we noticed they were all the colours of the vibrant sunsets we get here! These cocktails captured the essence of summer with their fruity and spiced flavours.

For the mains, Hlobisile advised us to try a Circus Circus Chartwell classic: Spicy Pescatore pasta, made with prawns, calamari, fresh mussels, chilli, oven-roasted tomatoes, white wine and garlic and topped with parsley and a touch of cream. The chilli notes enhance the wine-based sauce and brought out the taste of the seafood components. Every pasta dish is available with penne, tagliatelle or spaghetti.

For starters, we chose a variety of dishes that show off the versatility of the menu. The

The Classic Flame Grilled burger brought some variety to the table with a 200g beef patty, peppadew mayo and gherkins. Let’s not forget the thick-cut chips and crispy onion rings we absolutely loved!

Sometimes you just want a lighter meal, so Circus Circus Chartwell has created the Sesame Citrus Salad. This is a refreshing combination of orange, peanuts, sliced purple cabbage and carrot, pickled ginger, crispy noodles, mint, coriander, garden greens and sesame dressing. Available as a vegan and chicken option, this dish is perfect for summer. The sesame dressing combined with the pickled ginger and the crunch of the salad elements provided a burst of zesty taste with each forkful. We ended off the night with some sweet treats, a crème brûlée and chocolate brownie, to round off our culinary experience. Time flies by in good company and good food - you barely notice the sun setting outside. www.circuscircus.co.za/chartwell @circuscircuscafe Shop 15, Lighthouse Quarter, 14 Chartwell Drive, Umhlanga

Calming the Inner Storm WORDS ELNA BURGER Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that is often associated with children, but it can persist into adulthood. Adults with ADHD face unique challenges that may not be as apparent as the hyperactivity observed in children. Alongside difficulties with attention and impulsivity, adults with ADHD may also experience symptoms such as time blindness, difficulty turning aspirations into action, and emotional dysregulation. In this article, we will focus on one particular aspect of adult ADHD: internal hyperactivity. Internal hyperactivity refers to the intense cognitive activity experienced by adults with ADHD. Instead of physical restlessness, they grapple with a constant whirlwind of thoughts and mental chatter. Some key characteristics of internal hyperactivity in adults include: 1. Racing Thoughts: Adults can experience a rapid stream of thoughts that flit from one idea to another. Their minds are constantly buzzing, making it challenging to focus or complete tasks. 2. Restlessness Within: Adults may struggle to relax or find a sense of inner calm, even during moments of rest. 3. Impulsive Inner Dialogue: This is when thoughts and ideas pop up without restraint. This can result in impulsive decisionmaking, speaking without thinking, and difficulty filtering thoughts. 4. Difficulty Concentrating and Organising: Adults may find it hard to maintain focus on one task or organise their thoughts effectively. They may struggle with time management and completing tasks due to their overactive minds. 5. Mental Exhaustion: Constant mental activity

takes a toll and can lead to mental exhaustion. Their cognitive resources become depleted, resulting in fatigue and reduced cognitive functioning. Having ADHD can significantly impact our daily lives, leading to reduced productivity, impaired work performance, strained relationships, and emotional distress. To manage internal hyperactivity effectively, individuals with ADHD can implement various strategies: 1. Understanding How Your Mind Works: Educate yourself about the ADHD brain. Recognise that you do not need to wait for a medical diagnosis to address your challenges. 2. Realising Your Challenges Do Not Define You: Your ADHD challenges do not mean you have a personality flaw or lack capability.

3. Informing Your Loved Ones: Communicate with your loved ones about your ADHD challenges. Help them understand the impact of ADHD on your daily life and explain specific ways they can offer understanding and support. 4. Seeking ADHD-Informed Coaching: Working with an ADHD-informed coach can provide guidance and support specifically designed for adults with ADHD. These coaches understand the nuances of the condition and can help individuals address emotional wounds, enhance self-esteem and confidence and navigate challenges. There is hope. Whether you decide to approach your diversity with or without support from an ADHD-informed coach, you can mitigate the impact of ADHD on your daily life.

ELNA is an ADHD-Informed Life Coach and an internationally accredited Master NLP Life Coach and Time-Line Therapist with over 10 000 hours of experience in the coaching space. Her expertise goes beyond professional training, as she brings a lifetime of personal experience living with ADHD to her coaching practice. www.clearmindnlp.com

NEW YEAR SALE PREP WORDS GRANT GAVIN The December holiday is not only a time of festive cheer and some well-deserved time off but also a fantastic opportunity to get your home in top condition, especially for homeowners considering selling their homes in the new year. The new year often brings about change, whether it be linked to changes in employment, lifestyle, relationship and financial situations, emigration or semigration. Traditionally, January and February are busy months for real estate agents as homeowners finalise their life decisions and prepare their homes for sale. If you are considering placing your home on the market in 2024, here are a few tips to help you take advantage of this perfect opportunity to effectively prepare your home for sale and ensure that it stands out in the competitive new year real estate market. • CREATE A WARM AMBIENCE. Holiday decorations can add a touch of warmth and cosiness to your home. Retain that ambience a little longer into the new year by opting for more neutral, tasteful decorations this year. This will enhance your home's natural charm without overwhelming potential visitors. Keep the neutral candles, lights and subtle ornaments up a little longer and retain that warm holiday feeling. • DECLUTTER AND ORGANISE. Take advantage of your holiday time to declutter your space. We rarely have time to do this during a busy year, and you’re probably going to need to do some clearing out and organising when you eventually move. Clearing up your

space showcases your home's potential for storage and makes it more appealing to buyers. • MAINTAIN OUTDOOR SPACES. As much as you are going to be enjoying your outdoor and entertainment areas during the holidays, these features will be a major attraction to potential buyers. Use the holiday time to ensure these areas are well-maintained and upgraded where necessary. Treat yourself to some outdoor furniture that will help potential buyers visualise the lifestyle elements you have come to enjoy. • GET YOUR HOME VALUED. If you are having thoughts of selling your home in the new year, getting it valued by a professional real estate agent before your holiday is a great idea. Knowing what your home is worth allows you to have more meaningful discussions, make better decisions with your family, and work on value-adding enhancements to your property during the year-end break. Use this festive downtime to give considerable thought to preparing you and your family for your new year property decisions. And, of course, if the time is right for you, and you’re staying local for the holidays, putting your home on the market in December works too. Contact any of our outstanding RE/MAX Panache agents for more professional advice.

The new year often brings about change, whether it be linked to changes in employment, lifestyle, relationship and financial situations, emigration or semigration

Happy holidays!
