NOTE We found ourselves living in the same estate for over 17 years with one of our three kids completing matric at the same school we chose at the very outset. The other two had finished junior school there but then decided to follow a different route, homeschooling and completing a US-based high school diploma. It was a change from what was a traditional approach back then before COVID made homeschooling more mainstream.

I

remember moving to the coast 20 years ago. Lorinda and I had done a few exploratory trips down to look at homes and schools for the kids. Coming from Pretoria and working in Johannesburg, I was used to a daily commute. I was spending between two or three hours a day in the car travelling to work and back (this was a time when petrol was way cheaper!) and we were hoping to find a home close to my work. More important, though, was finding the right school for our kids. They were in a great private school in Pretoria and we wanted to find something locally with the same values and ethos. We looked around at various options and found an amazing, small private school where we thought the kids could be really happy. We bought a home in an estate that bordered the school which made life so much easier. I found myself still having to do a 20-minute drive to the office and back each day, but that was much better than my days in Joburg.

I share this because, as you already know, choosing where our children go to school governs a large part of our day-to-day routine and is a significant decision for many of us. The options available today have expanded and there's so much choice for parents. KZN has some spectacular schools, several of which are found right here in the Midlands, from schools steeped in tradition to those that are embracing a new style of education and offering so much more to parents and students. I hope you enjoy our first edition for 2024! We’re delighted to welcome the new year with you. We plan to continue building on our stories and successes from 2023 and ensuring our readers enjoy every edition of this magazine. God bless.

PEOPLE

TELL US ABOUT A "HIDDEN GEM"?

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL WEEKEND

My ideal weekend would definitely be spent at The Fisherman’s Cottage, which is a beautiful lodge tucked away in the Kamberg. It’s pet-friendly and my hubby and the boys can flyfish. The weekend would include kayaking to the waterfall, sunset drinks on the deck, and a potjie or braai to end the day.

THE MIDLANDS THROUGH THE EYES OF A LOCAL!

I have to mention actual “gems” - Gill Hayhoe, who designs and handmakes the most beautiful custom-made earrings inspired by her travels to Florence. Her shop can be found in Nottingham Road.

Meet Melanie Martin, a mom of three who is the happiest when exploring KZN with her #MartinFamdamily. She shares her favourite Midlands spots with us.

@mulling_it_over_with_mel WHERE CAN WE FIND THE BEST PIZZA?

FAVOURITE SPOT FOR A DATE NIGHT?

Date night for the parents! Brahman Hills has it all! Start at Healing Earth Spa for some pampering and end with a beautiful lunch in the garden or dinner at their Skyfall Restaurant. Maybe even spoil yourself with one night’s stay.

Wow! This is a hard one as the Midlands offers some amazing pizza places! I have to mention The Pizza Place at Piggly Wiggly, which is perfect for families. They have a great selection of pizzas but also offer a great day out.

WHAT ARE SOME FUN ACTIVITIES THAT YOU ENJOY DOING?

The Midlands is perfect for so many activities if you love the outdoors - kayaking, fishing, zip-lining and even karting! It is the #MartinFamdamily’s favourite place.

INSPIRATION

YES I CAN! WORDS LYDIA NEL

W

e have experienced four years during which our lives were on a rollercoaster ride of happiness, loneliness, sadness, isolation, sudden freedom, financial instability, financial growth and an ever-changing economy. Some of us made it through with no scars, but some of us are scarred for life. For me, I fought breast cancer and beat it. I also started my own business and it changed my life. Running your own business is definitely not easy. I have thought to myself many times, “Why on earth did I take this leap?” but I know it has placed me on a path of self-growth and development. Often people who have never walked that path themselves say, “Just grab the opportunity and start your own business!” and you take it with a pinch of salt. From my own experience, I know that starting your own business and keeping it running and lucrative is a tough journey, although a rewarding one. I had to make many changes during the nearly three years of running eL Intimates, including giving up my beautiful rental boutique space to move the business to my home. I was faced with the decision of running into debt or pursuing a new path, which was very scary. So, here is my advice if you plan to start your own business in 2024: yes, you will be

following your dream and living your passion, but be prepared for the ups and downs. You have to make hard decisions to keep your dream alive. But, in saying that, you will learn so much and the sense that every minute you contribute to and spend on your business is for your own benefit is absolutely fulfilling. By sharing my own experience, I want to encourage you to take the leap this year and go for whatever dream you have been wanting to follow. The first step is to say no to the feeling of “I can’t do it”, and say yes to “I can”! Getting up, showing up, and keeping it up is what is important. Whether it is a work goal, health goal, fitness goal or relationship goal, it does not matter. What matters is that it’s your goal and no one should keep you from it, especially your self-doubt! So, spend time with like-minded people, learn from others who have reached the same goal, and make 2024 the year you start living your dream.

WHETHER IT IS A WORK GOAL, HEALTH GOAL, FITNESS GOAL OR RELATIONSHIP GOAL, IT DOES NOT MATTER. WHAT MATTERS IS THAT IT’S YOUR GOAL AND NO ONE SHOULD KEEP YOU FROM IT

LYDIA was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 and opened eL Intimates in 2021, a specialised lingerie boutique that provides supportive underwear for mastectomy patients and all women. lydia@elintimates.co.za

BRITTNEY'S PHOTOS LAURA JEAN HARRIS

WEDDINGS

Brittney & Roan McCabe WHICH VENUE DID YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

WHAT WAS ONE CHALLENGE YOU FACED?

I had always dreamed of getting married on the farm I was lucky enough to grow up on. Everdon Estate is an avocado farm just off Karkloof Road. It’s the most special place for all of us. We got married there on 7 January 2023.

To be honest, there were various challenges. I found it challenging to not overthink small decisions and to stop people pleasing. Getting married just after the festive season also came with challenges as many vendors were closed or only open for a few days, which meant I could only do certain things the week of the wedding which was stressful. The week leading up poured with rain so having marquees and all the wedding furniture delivered in torrential rain was a real tester. It did, however, bring us all together and there wasn’t a drop of rain on the day!

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GET MARRIED IN THE MIDLANDS? I would’ve always chosen the Midlands as I truly believe there is nothing quite like it. There is a certain beauty that is so quintessentially the Midlands, whether it’s the bold summer days with rolling mist in the evenings or the crisp winter mornings with beautiful mountains and trees wherever you look. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR DECOR I’ve always gravitated towards brighter colours so naturally I was drawn to the beautiful bright colours that have been coming through in decor trends. The bridesmaids wore a beautiful charcoal colour and the groomsmen had simple stone chinos and white shirts with floral, colourful bowties.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT? Looking around and seeing all our favourite people celebrating our love was truly a once-in-a-lifetime kind of feeling. Having friends and family from all corners of the world who previously didn’t know each other mix and mingle was amazing. I loved all the speeches and then the obvious, yet most important one, was having a moment together as a married couple.

… AND YOUR FABULOUS DRESS I was certain from the get-go that I didn’t want to buy but rather rent my wedding dress. I felt my ‘finding the right dress’ journey was serendipitous as I stumbled upon Julene Couture when having breakfast at the coffee shop next door. The dress Julene created had a beaded bodice which caught the light beautifully and was a fitted style. I was determined to have my straps be the stand-out feature and they definitely were. Julene spent hours folding tulle to create the waves attached to the straps and I couldn’t have loved how it turned out more.

WEDDINGS

Kirsty & Ross Butler WHICH VENUE DID YOU CHOOSE AND WHY? We chose St Ives Lodge & Venue as our venue for the official legal ceremony (held a couple of days before the wedding itself), the chapel service and the reception, which was on 29 April 2023. It was the perfect venue in every respect, offering wonderful facilities for each phase of our special day, and all set in the beautiful environs that St Ives has to offer. What a wonderful ambience!

… AND YOUR FABULOUS DRESS I chose a design that I knew would suit my physique best. I found a picture of exactly what I wanted and Tracey from Togs Dressmakers made it for me. The bodice was a low-backed halterneck fashioned in chunky lace, and the skirt was made from off-white bridal satin over two layers of fabric which filled it out and gave it depth. It was perfect!

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GET MARRIED IN THE MIDLANDS?

WHAT WAS ONE CHALLENGE YOU FACED?

We live just up the road from St Ives. For many years, it has been a favourite venue for many of our family's “special celebrations” the dam, the buck, the geese, the beautifully maintained grass areas, and the pathways all help to make it the perfect setting for a wedding.

This is difficult to say because there were so many people helping me, and they all had challenges of one sort or another. So, if I had to say anything, it was the planning, coordination and communication with each person who helped make it all happen. For this, I say a heartfelt thank you to my new aunt-in-law, Rosemary Hopkins, who kept endless lists and spreadsheets and kept us all on our toes.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR DECOR Our theme was ‘lace on wood’, and my chosen colours were deep forest green with cream and soft pink. We were aiming for a rustic setting with soft and delicate trimmings.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT? Being able to take off my shoes! No, seriously, it was all magical but, if I had to choose one, then I think walking down the aisle with my dad by my side and seeing Ross waiting for me and all the family and friends smiling at us.

WEDDINGS

Dominiqué& Jesse Jacobs WHICH VENUE DID YOU CHOOSE AND WHY? We got married at Bushwillow Caravan Park in Karkloof on 12 August 2023. It isn't a wedding venue, but we were doing all our own decor and we had a very small guest list. It was convenient being so close to home for family members. The park is also a frequent camping spot for Jesse and we used to go on school trips there. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GET MARRIED IN THE MIDLANDS?

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT? I cried so much on Sunday because I wanted to redo the whole day over and over again. I cannot pinpoint a specific moment. It was such a special day with our closest friends and family. The help we received from friends on the day, carrying the arch, sorting out chairs, cutting our cake to be served, and lighting candles in the hall everyone jumped in and was happy to do the tasks they were given.

We are born and bred Midlands people. There is nowhere else we would have wanted to get married. The scenery is just beyond beautiful, not to mention the great climate. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR DECOR Our main rule was that anything we had to purchase needed to be used in our home after the wedding. We made the arch so that it fit in a spot in our garden. We also made our own backdrop for the main table, spray painted palms and a mixture of pampas grass, and made a neon “Jacobs” sign. We also made our own candle holders and table decor. We kept it simple and basic, which allowed for easy setup and the guests enjoyed not having "cluttered" tables. Jesse's favourite colour is orange, so I tried to get pops of it in my bouquet, on the cake and with silk flowers. … AND YOUR FABULOUS DRESS I found my dress on Stillwhite, a secondhand wedding dress site. I tried on a few dresses and fell in love with the a-line design. It suited our theme of the relaxed and romantic feel of the decor. I felt absolutely amazing in it. I wouldn't have changed a thing about it. The designer is Cindy Bam. WHAT WAS ONE CHALLENGE YOU FACED? The one challenge was that our speaker blew, and then there was load shedding. So we pulled our bakkie right up to the venue and plugged in the smoke machine and party lights, and danced the night away outside around the bonfires. It was one of the best things of the night actually!

Passionate About Education An independent, co-educational school, Carlyle College is situated on a magnificent and historic campus in Nottingham Road. The school’s vision is to provide a nurturing, creative and inspiring learning environment for students to become leaders, lifelong learners and responsible citizens, ready to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world. In partnership with families and the community, the school creates relevant and real-world learning opportunities for students, both inside and outside the classroom, cultivating their individual academic and extra-curricular passions and developing the knowledge, critical thinking skills and character necessary for them to thrive. This can be summed up by the school motto: “Where Passion Meets Purpose”. The school currently comprises a preschool called Little Chameleons for children from two years old to Grade R, and a prep school from Grades 1 to 6. The middle school offering is from Grades 7 to 9, followed by the college which will be Grades 10 to 12. With the school in its second year of operation, the highest grade offered is Grade 8, which will lead the way and

become the first matric class in 2028. Carlyle College follows the South African CAPS curriculum and the school is working towards writing their matric examinations through the IEB. At Carlyle College, it is a strongly held belief that instilling a lifelong love of physical activity and sports is imperative. Numerous school sports are offered during the year and a variety of extra-curricular activities are also available through community partners. As a growing school, creativity is required when making up teams and organising fixtures, however, this will evolve and be led by the interests and passions of the students. School sport is generally played during the week with weekends reserved

for individual interests and family time. Whilst the school was officially opened on 17 January 2023, the campus enjoys a rich heritage of education going back to 1908 when St Winifred’s School for Girls was opened. This was followed by Chippenham Boys School, open between 1920 and 1922, and King's School from 1922 until its closure in 2019. In 2022, the campus was taken over by a new family enterprise with a desire to offer an innovative and inspiring learning environment for the growing community. The result was Carlyle College, named after the Carlyle-Mitchell family who were the custodians of King's School and the campus for almost 80 years. admissions@carlylecollege.com

he Drakensberg is one of those places where people lose their souls, not in a negative way, but in the sense that they let go, find themselves, and tend to always return. The mountains are fortresses of solitude and it is an incredible experience exploring their vast lands. If you haven’t heard of the Aasvoelkrans Cave in Highmoor Nature Reserve, it’s a large, open cave that can accommodate eight people and is a 4.2-kilometre hike from the nature reserve’s reception. It is also situated right alongside a waterfall that falls into an amazing pool, perfect for a lovely swim after the hike. So, what did I do for a weekend? I hiked and slept in a cave!

David Allen, the co-founder of Camp Soloman (a leadership and adventure program for School groups and adults) and a body language trainer, public speaker and author, has an innate passion for sharing his “backyard”, the Berg, with anyone and everyone who wants to escape the bustling city life. David invited me and four others on this two-day hike to stay in the cave. As I have always wanted to be a bit more adventurous, I was thrilled to experience something new. The first disclaimer is that you need to ‘rough it’ for one night. There are no bathrooms so you bring what is necessary and find a ‘loo with a view’. It’s also important to note that whatever you want with you, you carry, and you will most likely sleep on a yoga mat in a sleeping bag.

If this sounds intimidating, I promise you that these small compromises are nothing compared to the priceless reward of the fulfilling experience. To start our trip, David took us all for a paddle on the Mooi River. With the abundant birdlife and riverbed flora, there was beauty everywhere. Afterward, we enjoyed our lunches before bag checks to make sure we all had everything we needed. The hike can take an hour and a half, depending on the group, and is perfect for beginners or people who aren’t avid hikers. From rolling green hills to the winding river and spotting amazing flowers, my mind was empty but my soul was full. Water was never a worry as the running water from the river and

From rolling green hills to the winding river and spotting amazing flowers, my mind was empty but my soul was full waterfall is safe to drink, which is rather sweet but extremely refreshing. During the hike, we saw amazing views of Giant’s Castle which looked like it could be the perfect postcard photo. This is when David shared his intimate knowledge of the Berg. Apparently, in the late 1800s, a father and son claimed to have seen dragons in the mountains, and thus “Dragon Mountains” became Drakensberg. In Zulu, the mountains are known as the “Barrier of Spears”. After we reached the cave, we set up camp on the flat parts before doing a small rock climb down to the waterfall. The water was so refreshing to dive into and cool off. After everyone enjoyed the waterfall and took a few photos, we headed back up to get dinner started. A trusty small camping gas stove and pot are all you need - everyone took their turn to make dinner and a hot cup of tea. We were even blessed with a faint rainbow in the valley that we got to marvel at while eating. As the night slowly crept in, we finished our “campfire” stories and all hit the hay for an early rise, which was at about 5 a.m. after the sunrise illuminated the cave. I trekked up our trail to get a higher view of the sun rising over the cliff and into the valley below and had a moment to reflect and appreciate the beauty of our world. After everyone was up and packed, we enjoyed our cups of coffee before starting our hike back. The toughest part was the very beginning, going up the stairs along the cliff, but I pushed through with everyone’s motivation. Our first view was breathtaking - on one side you look down over a cliff into a valley of farms and dams and on the other is Giant’s Castle and crystal clear blue skies made for uninterrupted views. The trek back was a hard one but the mountain scenes were incredible. Honestly, it was a hard goodbye, but I wasn’t leaving empty-handed. I completed a hike and slept in an open cave, swam under a waterfall, and made new friends while creating memories that will last a lifetime. If there is anything adventurous you want to do this new year, you must add this to your list. You’ll thank me later! david@campsolomon.co.za

eet Adam Riley and Robert Cronjé, two guys who are passionate about collecting coins and books. They are also the proud owners of Midlands Books & Collectables, which they opened on 1 May this year at The Old Mushroom Farm. The two fellas met when Robert joined the PMB Numismatic Society in 2017, of which Adam has been a member since 1982. In case you don’t know what numismatic means, it has to do with the collection of coins, money or medals. Robert and Adam’s love for growing their varied collections led the pair to buy and sell them. Robert funded his coin collection in this way and Adam his book collection. Robert shared, “My focus slowly started to shift to buying and selling any interesting collectables. When my garage started looking like a library and storage unit, I knew I was into this deeper than planned, and my wife wasn't too happy about her car being parked outside! Needless to say, Adam had a similar problem with his library bursting at the seams with all the excess books he was gathering.” They had plans to sell their collectables online, which were housed in a “storage unit” (which was the current shop at The Old Mushroom Farm), but the duo soon realised that they needed to re-evaluate their business plan, because the shop sort of took on a life of its own. With over 300 apple boxes filled with books

and containers holding other collectable items and books, they decided on 25 April to open the shop to the public on 1 May! Their first few weeks, days and evenings were filled with the sight of boxes decorating the shop as they unpacked, priced and sorted all their stock. However, what was a nightmare of unpacking became a dream for book lovers. With a whole gamut of genres available, from fiction that ranges from romance to fantasy and non-fiction that ranges from history and biographies to esoteric, health and more, visitors can spend a good couple of hours browsing and buying at affordable prices. So, it might be best to bring along your own apple box! The collection keeps on growing too as Adam and Robert can’t resist buying more treasures. Some weeks they purchase over 4000 books! Some of the older books that they can’t sell have been donated to schools in Zululand, Greendale House and other institutions. The owners truly take pride in their shop. “What we both intended as a sideline fun business has turned into a well-loved and fraternised shop at The Old Mushroom Farm." They have already hosted a book launch in the shop and plan on hosting more events in the future. And, if you’re wondering whether Robert managed to empty his garage, well, let’s say that his wife still has to park outside, and Adam’s library’s seams have burst. Let’s give it to them both for keeping the collectable industry alive in our community! www.midlandsbooks.com

experience. I have to admit, Thanda delivered what I can only explain as some of the most unique animal encounters we have ever had on a safari so far.

THE GAME DRIVES Our weekend started with a quick but very delicious late lunch. We then left for our first game drive of the trip, with reasonably low expectations (as we have done many safaris and, at times, seen almost no animals). We go on the drives for the experience, but we are always hopeful of seeing something cool.

We sat and watched lions sleep out in the sun, while the younger lions showed their playful side, trying to wake up the older crowd. It was so special to watch real cat family dynamics right in front of us. We also saw very young cheetahs (still fluffy and rather un-coordinated) try their hand at stalking birds while mom kept an eye on them from afar. It was by far the cutest thing we have ever seen in the bush! We got close to elephants multiple times - so close we could see their skin texture and hear the mighty crunch as they ate.

How pleasantly surprised we were as our guide, Peace Nyawo, and our tracker, Sichivolo Myeni, worked really hard at making every drive an

The guide-and-tracker duo was truly amazing. Even on our last day, during the drive back to our car, they stopped twice for us to see rhinos

comfortable drive from the Midlands into the bush is our family's ultimate spoil and preferred “breathing space”! During this weekend trip, we stayed at Thanda Tented Camp at Thanda Safari and absolutely loved it! From the moment we arrived, the staff were super attentive and friendly.

wallowing in the mud and the impressive elephants just one more time. We experienced some incredible sightings and there were many ‘safari firsts’ for us, which is always a bonus! As always, the midway sunup or sundowner stops were fabulous. We were amazed when we had one unexpected, close-up elephant viewing as we stood, very still and in awe, as he walked right past us while we sipped on Amarula and watched the sun go down. THE STAY The Luxury Tents were exactly that. These romantic safari suites are the ultimate in luxury camping. They are super comfy and all your needs are covered and met, with the option of a bath or shower in your tent to add to your preferred experience (the additional outdoor shower was also a big win!). The Meru-style tents, which feature wooden floors and are decorated with classic Victorian furniture and finishings, are such a wonderful surprise. Each tent has a large bedroom, private sundeck and en-suite bathroom. Two days were not enough to enjoy this area, and I would happily book three nights away to fully relish in the vast patio, with its stunning bush views, having a relaxed coffee. THE LAZY AREAS We spent a lot of time just relaxing, enjoying the fire pit area and singing

44 | W W W. T H E M I D L A N D S M A G A Z I N E . C O . Z A

around the fire at night. Even though the pool was cold (this was a winter trip), we lazed around the rim-flow pool surrounded by sun loungers with cocktails in hand. It was the perfect spot to soak up the warm African sun and go for a quick dip. These areas are made for relaxing between food and game drives! THE FOOD One word: exceptional. At every sitting, the menu offered was fantastic - so much so that we had trouble deciding what to choose! To avoid food envy, we decided the best course of action was to order a variety of dishes and indulge in food sharing. The restaurant staff were so accommodating and easy-going. The chef came out at every meal to tell us a bit more about what was on his menu, which was such a nice touch and we appreciated getting his input. When asked, “What is good?”, his fabulous response was simply “Everything” (and he was right too!).

Every meal is an occasion and we loved the bush banquet in the boma area. Traditionally dressed Zulu tribesmen performed customary dances, adding to the evening’s festivities. The experience was very special. What is better than a true South African braai, pap and sous with all the bells and whistles enjoyed under the African stars? Perfection. Thanda Safari, you truly exceeded all our expectations. We will be back for sure. If you’re interested in visiting Thanda Safari, check out their website. CONNECTING the World Through Language

O

n a sunny Monday in Durban, I met with Ms Giulia De Lorenzi, teaching Director for Dante Languages. The new venue, located in a beautiful and secure complex in Umhlanga, is equipped with all that is needed for highly professional teaching in a comfortable learning environment. Here, more than twenty teachers are engaged in lessons. WHAT IS THE CURRENT SITUATION REGARDING THE STUDY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN SOUTH AFRICA? WHAT ARE THE PREDICTIONS FOR 2024? We are seeing a considerable increase in foreign language learning in South Africa, especially online. There is an often-underestimated linguistic heritage amongst learners in South African schools which is getting more and more valorised in academic terms, benefitting individuals and educational institutions. Multilingualism is also becoming a key factor for the creation of work opportunities for the new generations. A GROWING BUT ALSO DEMANDING REQUEST? Yes. We teach foreign languages to more than 6000 students all over South Africa, preparing learners for IEB and Cambridge exams in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Mandarin, Russian and Arabic. We tailor our courses according to the specific learning strategies of our students. WHY IS STUDYING ONLINE GRADUALLY REPLACING FACETO-FACE LESSONS? By studying online, you choose the learning environment that works best for your own needs. You don’t have to leave work early for class or miss important family time.

46 | W W W. T H E M I D L A N D S M A G A Z I N E . C O . Z A

HOW WILL THE COOPERATION BE WITH SCHOOLS IN 2024? We are working with several educational institutions in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Angola and Namibia. Dante takes care of everything, including the long and delicate task of preparing portfolios for IEB and Cambridge exams. In 2024, our offer will be even more competitive, with a system of profit sharing with schools and an exchange programme for students and team members. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR COLLABORATIONS WITH FOREIGN INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS AND SCHOLARSHIPS? We have several partnerships, such as with the Japanese Foundation, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Spanish and Portuguese governments. It is thanks to these cooperations that we are in a position to offer our students the possibility of an annual scholarship, which will cover their annual tuition fee for the first year of enrolment in a foreign university of their choice. DOES THAT MEAN THAT YOUR STUDENTS CAN GO ABROAD AND STUDY WITH YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT? Correct! One of our students, Kimmyka, who completed her JLCAT exam for Japanese last year, is currently spending one year in Japan. We also have Francois who studies Spanish - after the Christmas holidays, he will be leaving to study in Barcelona. Kida, studying Italian, will leave for Italy at the end of January. 073 852 2482 (WhatsApp - instant response) www.dantedurban.com 1 Torsvale Crescent, Somerset Park, Umhlanga

BUSINESS REVIEW

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS

T

he Olde Duck is a cosy restaurant run by Jeannine Bonsma, who started it 20 years ago, sold it, and then rebought it in 2014. She has partnered with her daughter, Bronwyn Penny, who bought into the business in 2020. The restaurant is situated on a quaint working dairy farm, Marlin Farm, in Underberg. Whether you are just passing through for a snack or enjoying a delicious lunch with friends or family, this is an ideal, idyllic spot overlooking the rolling countryside with the Drakensberg mountains in the distance. There is so much more on offer than just food - you can make yourself at home here. The owners pride themselves on their delicious menu offering breakfast, lunch and treats. There are salads, their popular 200g homemade beef burgers,

toasted sandwiches and savoury pancakes, to name a few. Their coffees are made from their handcrafted blends. Their top-rated and award-winning “Best in the Berg” cappuccino is a must-try, which the owners suggest must be paired with their homemade carrot cake or homemade scones. With the addition of their deli, visitors can also purchase and stock up on fresh produce and products. While the restaurant space caters to all ages, everyone can also enjoy the big gardens. They are notably designed to accommodate playful kiddies who love jungle gyms, bike tracks, splash pads and an animal farm, where ducks, donkeys, cows and other animals roam. For outdoor enthusiasts, other additional features that you can utilise include cycling and running trails that start from the premises and cover a distance of 30 kilometres towards the mountains.

Next to The Olde Duck, there is also a women’s clothing, toy and decor shop, called Vanilla Rose, where visitors can browse their unique pieces. With a love of people and sharing their beautiful restaurant, shop and deli with all who visit, Jeannine and Bronwyn aim to create a space, or “perfect destination”, where holidaymakers and travellers can stop, have a coffee and bite to eat, do their morning runs or cycles, or just enjoy the lush countryside and gardens. 076 415 7378 vanillaroseaccents@gmail.com @the_olde_duck

HEALTH

A New Approach to Treating Depression WORDS DR RALPH GILBERT

M

ore than one in eight people are affected by some form of mental health issues and over 700,000 people a year succumb to suicide. Since COVID, these numbers have increased by over 25%. With the start of a new year, it’s important to review your mental health and, if you are struggling, get the help you need. However, how do you know you may be suffering from depression? Symptoms include deep feelings of sadness, loss of interest in work or social activities, difficulty concentrating, slowed thoughts, forgetfulness and trouble remembering, trouble making decisions, trouble sleeping or sleeping too much, feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt, energy loss or increased fatigue, irritability, anger or tearfulness, and weight or appetite changes. These feelings and symptoms can be all-consuming and impossible to break free from. It can affect your personal life, relationships, work or school life, and those around you. For many years, people with depression and suicidality were treated with various types of oral medications, psychotherapy and sometimes shock therapy with varying degrees of success. However, an appreciable portion of these patients are not adequately treated, don’t find a happy mental health state, and remain depressed, known as treatment-resistant depression. If you happen to fall in this category, you need not struggle alone for the rest of 2024. Recently, a lot of interest has been shown in the use of psychedelics in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression, including psilocybin (magic mushrooms), LSD, MDMA (ecstasy), Ayahuasca and

Infusion Therapy with an anaesthetic agent. While some of these are legal in other countries, only Infusion Therapy is legally available in this country. Infusion Therapy is a low-dose anaesthetic agent that is infused over 40 minutes. During this time, the patient is made to feel safe and comfortable in a reclined soft chair, covered by a blanket, eyes covered with eye pads, and soft music played through headphones. The patient may experience an out-of-body feeling and have a psychedelic experience, all the while the medication is working on certain areas of the brain and releasing large amounts of hormones that significantly improve mood and decrease suicidality, very effectively. Over 70% of patients experience a significant improvement after only one infusion and over 90% after a series of infusions. It is indeed incredibly rewarding to see a patient who is crippled with depression and suicidal thoughts wake up with a smile and have a new brighter lease on life. Here’s to a happier 2024!

COMMUNITY

WHAT’S TRENDING IN 2024? WORDS TIM JOHNSON

A

new year brings with it new opportunities and, of course, inevitable challenges. Whilst I like to rely on my own experiences and intuition to navigate life and business, it can be useful to look at macro trends and research to understand what is happening around us. Accenture’s 17th annual

Life Trends report for 2024 is one such useful resource that looks to identify and explore various factors that are expected to change the way people experience and interact with brands, organisations, governments and systems in the coming year and beyond. The report highlighted five very interesting global trends, but in the interest of not irritating the Editor and exceeding my word limit, I thought I’d focus on just one. This particular trend is referred to as a ‘Decade of Deconstruction’, and it refers to the idea that traditional life paths are being rerouted by new limitations, necessities and opportunities. School, careers, marriage, the property ladder, family, retirement - the path to old definitions of success were marked by common milestones. As people look at life more flexibly, demographics are being upended. In plain terms, people are challenging long-standing ideas and shaping new ways of thinking, acting and living. The impact of this trend on a variety of systems, services and communities is likely to be far-reaching. So, let’s look at some specific examples. People are now living life less than one year at a time with 48% making plans for their lives less than 12 months ahead or simply not planning at all. We’ve seen this trend impact industries like tourism, with last-minute bookings becoming a far more common occurrence. It also means that products and services hoping to encourage people to think ‘long-term’ and

‘invest in the future’ might need to re-think their offerings or the way in which their messaging is communicated. In the past three years, there has also been a drop in the value placed on traditional milestones including marriage (from 30% to 21%), graduating from university (from 30% to 24%), and moving out of the parental home (23% to 17%). The latter might send shivers down many a parent’s spine, but the cost of living and housing has certainly influenced the nature of household dynamics. We’ve seen an increase in demand for multi-generational living spaces that are adaptable as kids become young adults and as elderly parents move back in with their adult children. This trend may, for example, impact the nature and price of new property developments and their amenities, and challenge what each historical life stage looks like. From an education perspective, apart from certain professions requiring a tertiary degree, there is a definite shift towards young people acquiring practical skills and experiences that support changing employment opportunities and the needs of their communities and the world at large. This means that there are opportunities for a variety of sectors including hospitality and tourism and agribusiness, amongst others, to attract and nurture young, talented school leavers across a range of skills, who may be disillusioned with the idea of pinning their hopes on an expensive and often very theoretical commerce degree. So as new mindsets emerge, they will trigger a different perspective and approach to products and services. Supporting people’s unique paths is therefore going to become more relevant than ever as the evolution of our society and what it values continues.

SO AS NEW MINDSETS EMERGE, THEY WILL TRIGGER A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE AND APPROACH TO PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
