We all agree that the Midlands has continued to develop, over the years, into an iconic location with mass appeal. Whether that appeal is focused on locals, tourists or families looking to relocate to the unique lifestyle, there is no doubt that the area remains widely admired and deeply influential to many.

It was serendipitous then that I happened to watch the most recent edition of the legendary series Mission: Impossible this past weekend. Lead actor Tom Cruise has also built international appeal and is revered for his dedication to both his craft and his aweinspiring stunt scenes in his movies. Both Tom and the Midlands have developed iconic status over time with mass appeal.

So when we heard that this legendary actor had stayed in the area while filming scenes for part two of the latest edition, we were delighted. The Midlands playing host to a revered actor just seemed like it was a perfect fit and we

Something Bold, Something Blue

An Edgy and Ethereal Styled Wedding Photoshoot

The concept behind this styled shoot was to break free from traditional wedding norms and embrace the bold and unexpected to exude an air of daring elegance. A group of local suppliers joined forces to create an extraordinary, styled wedding photoshoot with the theme “Something Bold, Something Blue”, located at

Highgate Wine Estate, an elegant venue with picturesque surroundings. The aim was to craft an experience that was both unusual and magical, capturing the essence of love in a truly unique way.

Every detail was thoughtfully curated to add a touch of magic. The ceremony backdrop featured a cascading mix of dried and fresh florals, creating an ethereal effect against the modern winery. The bride's ensemble defied convention, as she dazzled in a daring tulle gown adorned with intricate beading, accentuated by a timeless hair and makeup look. The groom complemented her boldness with a modern two-tone suit, perfectly tailored to match the theme. The reception showcased a blend of elegance and edginess. Blush, cream and powder blue tablescapes were adorned with organic elements, romantic candles and whimsical

pastel accents. A decadent wedding cake stood as the pièce de résistance, with a sculptural element adding finesse and drama. The skilled photographer and videographer brought out the essence of this magical affair. Using unconventional angles, moody lighting, and imaginative composition, they captured the couple's love in a series of breathtaking images that told a story of daring romance and enchantment.

The “Something Bold, Something Blue” wedding photoshoot exemplified the power of collaboration and creativity. The local suppliers involved succeeded in crafting an extraordinary experience that pushed the boundaries of tradition and showcased the allure of the unconventional. By embracing an edgy and magical aesthetic, they provided inspiration for couples seeking a wedding that truly reflects their unique personalities and desires. In this realm of limitless imagination, love knows no bounds, and the result is nothing short of spectacular.

Emotional resilience is the ability to adjust quickly to difficult circumstances (i.e. to “bounce back” when life throws one a curve ball). It is most effectively built upon a solid foundation of excellent brain health. Now that spring has sprung, it is a good time to assess which of the “SEEEDS” of optimal brain functioning you should consider planting. The SEEEDS acronym is designed to remind one of the lifestyle habits that will boost one’s brain. Why not consider experimenting with those listed below that are not yet a part of your daily life?

Stress Reduction

Chronic stress will put most of us into a state of ‘just surviving’. This is partly because of the imbalances chronic stress causes in one’s gut microbiome which, in turn, leave one vulnerable to a range of brain and other health conditions. Why not try Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) training, either in-person or online? It is one of the most well-researched and beneficial stress-management training options currently available.

Eat Healthily

Eating habits are hugely significant for a healthy brain. Limit the intake of foods that cause inflammation of the body and brain, such as refined carbohydrates, processed foods, added sugar and seed oils. Eat a variety of colourful plant foods, which ensures you’re getting a full range of beneficial phytochemicals and antioxidants.

Exercise Regularly

Aerobic exercise not only benefits cardiovascular

health, but it is also neuro-protective and results in neurogenesis, the creation of new brain cells. Try increasing the amount of moderate-intensity activity you do each day to between 20 and 35 minutes (four times per week). Remember to start gradually.

Eradicate Environmental Toxicants

Household cleaning agents and detergents are some of the most harmful substances when it comes to the functioning of our brains. Research also shows that electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) may be harmful to brain health. Why don’t you try making your own cleaning products using bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar and/or lemon juice? A bit of Google research may be useful!

Dialogue Regularly With Supportive People

All of our relationships require “work” through the medium of regular interaction and dialogue. Eating well and moving our bodies mean very little if you feel isolated, disconnected, and lonely. Friendpower is more powerful than willpower! Start by prioritising the relationships you want to support and leaving the relationships that aren’t serving you.

Sleep Well

Restorative sleep is critical for one’s brain health, largely because many regenerative and metabolic processes are regulated by your internal circadian clock. A lack of nightly restorative sleep will dysregulate your circadian clock, with negative consequences for brain and body. To better your sleep, keep your bedroom as dark as possible and ensure that the temperature is cool, around 18°C.

WORDS AliCiA du Plessis PHOTOS ruby JeAn PhotogrAPhy Qambathi Mountain Lodge

It’s not every day that a movie star comes to our neck of the province, but it’s also not an impossible mission to find great accommodation in the Midlands that is ‘celebrity-worthy’! Qambathi Mountain Lodge, a boutique eco-lodge and nature reserve in the upper Kamberg Valley, hosted none other than the acclaimed Hollywood star Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie and their production team for a few months last year during the filming for the eighth Mission: Impossible film, Dead Reckoning Part Two. The lodge shared the details of this incredible experience with us.

“There has been a lot of buzz in South Africa as he filmed in Hoesdspruit first. For us, it was a huge compliment to have been chosen and we felt very honoured.” This is definitely a feather in Qambathi’s cap!

Qambathi is an adults-only, private, secure and beautiful venue, offering a stress-free and restful oasis amongst nature. The owners, Stephen Maritz, who was born in South Africa, and his wife Nadia, who is originally from Poland, met in 2007 in Wales, got married in 2013, and found their way to South Africa

in 2019, a place they truly called home. As a married couple on a mission to create a fulfilling life and start a family, they ended up buying Qambathi Mountain Lodge in 2019 from the architect Gerhard LeRoux. LeRoux initially refurbished what was originally a farm into a lodge and nature reserve, which the Maritzs further developed into the eco-lodge it is today. From this, they created 15 new jobs and built a team who upkeeps the high standards that the lodge stands for. With breathtaking views, the lodge now also caters to weddings, retreats, perfect picnics, horse

rides, private photo shoots, and much more. Additionally, their gourmet meals create a memorable fine dining experience, with dinners being five-course affairs. It’s no wonder Tom Cruise and his team chose the lodge as their base!

Before we go into some of the details of Mr Cruise’s stay, we would like to highlight another aspect of what his visit represents. It epitomises that we have a burgeoning hospitality and travel industry in KwaZuluNatal, notably our very own Midlands, and its allure is fast making it an attractive escape and destination for not only local but international travellers - and movie makers! “I want to emphasise the importance that the movie industry brings to our economy. Many businesses survived and thrived while the film crew was in the country. Hotels, restaurants, food suppliers, farms and other industries were given a huge boost thanks to them choosing our country as a backdrop for the movie,” says Nadia. If Tom Cruise loves the Midlands, everyone will! #midlandsproud

So, here is the scoop. Tom Cruise stayed in Qambathi’s Stable Suite, which is the honeymoon suite, now endearingly named “Tom’s Room”. Undoubtedly, the movie star’s stay has piqued the curiosity of many who want to know what he got up to in our hometown. “Tom worked very hard and was up before sunrise every day! Breakfast was a working breakfast on the pool deck with Chris. Tom and Chris would fly every day via helicopter to set and back, often only getting back at sunset. They also enjoyed using

the lounge to edit the film.” Nadia describes Tom as super friendly with the Qambathi staff and always made an effort to talk with them. He enjoyed the wildlife on the farm and the complete privacy and quietness of the Kamberg. “Tom was very impressed with the quality of the local foods such as Dargle Valley Meats, Essenwood Micro Dairy, Bramleigh, Willowbridge, Freshly Pick’d, The Gourmet Greek and Miche Bakehouse, to name a few.” Nadia further shared that to have a celebrity like Tom Cruise enjoy his stay at the lodge was

a “huge testament to the work our team has put in over the past four years to put Qambathi on the map. It also means that South Africa is becoming an international destination on par with many European places.”

And so it goes to show, with hard work, perseverance and a bit of love, what seems impossible can be made possible.

of Growth Decades Two

From a seedling vision to a budding and blooming nursery, meet the family behind the Midlands Garden Centre and how they keep growing, come rain or shine.

PEOPLE | 23
PHOTOS riChArd hunt And kAren edwArds

Situated in Rosetta on Old Main Road, Midlands Garden Centre is celebrating its 20th anniversary this September! The beloved store opened its doors on 1 September 2003 and is still going strong. The owners, Albert and Jacky Jooste, have made it through “black frost, hail storms, wind storms, cold winters and COVID”, and they can undoubtedly weather any storm by now while continuing to grow and cultivate the finest organically grown plants.

It all started with Chris and Lesley Koch, who were based in Eastern Cape in Queenstown where they were running a successful nursery. Chris’s desire to return to his home province, KZN, led the couple to make a move in 1998 and buy a small holding in Otto’s Bluff in Pietermaritzburg. For the next five years, they grew a range of plants that they sold at the Bird Sanctuary and the old Pietermaritzburg Farmers Market.

When Chris found an advert for a piece of land on sale in Rosetta, which was a daylily nursery, he immediately knew it was the sign he was looking for. He bought the nursery, and the couple moved to Rosetta in June 2003. In just three months, they prepared to establish their new nursery, despite the criticism they received about it being too cold of a climate to succeed. Even though they experienced frost the night before opening, and covered their plants with linen, they held fast to their vision.

As a respite from the pace of the city and corporate life, Jacky, Chris’s youngest daughter, and her husband, Albert Jooste, joined the family business in 2010. Four years later, they bought Chris and Lesley’s

shares in the business and have been full-time owners ever since. Today, Chris and Lesley live in the Republic of Georgia. They took their love of growing plants and gardening with them and will “carry on doing so until they can’t anymore”.

Jacky and Albert have two children, Armin (22 years old), who studied law and is doing his articles in Cape Town, and Karla (18 years old), who is studying theology at

the University of the Free State. Both take after their parents and are hard workers who perform well in whatever they set their minds to. Jacky and Albert have been cultivating the nursery business with as much care as they have cultivated their plants. As Jacky explains, although running a family business is not always easy and “you work hard and long hours”, it has nevertheless allowed the family to create a life on their terms and a successful

garden centre. They pride themselves on several aspects that have contributed to this success. “Fantastic one-on-one customer service - as owners, we believe that it is important to be on the sales floor 80% of the time, be visible, and be available to our customers. We are blessed with amazing customers. We love people so we are always ready for a chat and building relationships,” says Jacky. Teamwork also makes the dream work, and the majority of the staff members have been there for 10 to 20 years. It is more like a family. “We laugh together, we cry together, and we love each other. Ndunakazi Monica Msele (or the “boss lady”) started working with Chris and Lesley in 2000 and is mainly responsible for growing our beautiful seedlings.”

Beyond the family, Jacky and Albert always consider their community and believe in the importance of working together to take part in the growth of the surrounding small towns. Albert grows and supplies vegetables to several local schools that have successful feeding schemes. The Midlands Garden Centre aims to grow and propagate hardy plants that can withstand cold climates and harsh weather conditions that we all know come with the territory here. Their plants are grown as organically as possible and they don’t

believe in excessive feeding or spraying programmes. Some of the plants available include flower and vegetable seedlings, perennials, scrubs, a wide range of fruit trees, roses and, for spring and summer, some indoor plants, along with other essentials like garden tools, fertilisers and indoor and outdoor pots. There is also a coffee shop that serves home-baked cakes and scones. With Jacky’s seven years of experience in landscaping, the garden centre boasts beautiful gardens for potential customers.

Jacky, Albert and Midlands Garden Centre express their gratitude to their loyal customers and suppliers for their support over the last 20 years. “We appreciate each and every person taking the time to come to Midlands Garden Centre. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank God. Without God, this would not be possible. We have experienced many tough times over the past years and God always helped us through these times. In our business, you see God’s hand in every plant we grow and we rely on Him for good weather and to protect us in bad weather circumstances.”

To celebrate their 20th birthday, they will be having a few well-known speakers for the months of September, October and November. They will also have lots of specials and celebrations coming up, so keep an eye on their Facebook for more information.

The Midlands is filled with homes that have dreamy modern interiors. Kirsty Badenhorst, an inspiring interior designer, has created one of them. She turned a dilapidated open warehouse shell into an elegant, twostorey, three-bedroom family home in Richmond, KZN, where even the smallest details were carefully thought out. She worked side-byside with a contractor, designing everything from the spatial plan to the placement of the final decor pieces.

Specialising in full turnkey solutions for anything relating to interior design, Kirsty Badenhorst Interiors has been around since 2008. They handle everything from new builds and decorating to renovations, special planning and interior design. With projects in residential, commercial, corporate and hospitality, Kirsty’s experience is extensive. She has also done work abroad in London, Seychelles, Rwanda and Botswana. With an in-house construction team, they even offer services such as gutting and redoing layouts in homes.

“This project was quite interesting. The home was surrounded by farms, with the second-level living area looking out over hills and hills of beautiful farmland. The owner wanted to achieve a contrast between the natural scenery and the modern interior,” says Kirsty. The home itself is also light and bright because of this greenery, and she didn’t want the interior to fight with the beautiful surroundings.

The team began by putting up internal dry walls to divide the spaces, as they were restricted to the weight they could add to the upper level. As a result, they were limited with regard to the use of heavy fitted items. To overcome this challenge, they focused on furniture that “sits” on the floor, such as statement occasional chairs, side tables and chests. Detailed wallpaper also adds that wow factor to select rooms, without having to mount fittings to the wall.

Kirsty went for a modern contemporary style, using a neutral palette while adding pops of colour with various pieces. “This gives the home a modern flair, but also gives the owner the opportunity to swap out the colours if they wanted to without completely redoing the entire space,” she adds. Scatter cushions with slight pink tones bring vibrancy to the living area, and the blue hues of the throw and velvet occasional chair in one of the bedrooms give it a luxe feel. The daughter’s bedroom is a standout area, as Kirsty leaned into a pink colour scheme, including a statement wall of patterned pink wallpaper and a purple-toned, large, velvet headboard.

Black metal light fittings were used to give the rooms a modern edge, as well as the gold accents found throughout the home. The master wing is particularly luxurious. Detailed gold wallpaper and a glass ball light fixture adorn the expansive walk-in closet, contrasted by a striking black stone wall in the en-suite. The bedroom incorporates black elements with the bedding and cabinetry, tying the whole space together.

A combination of materials for furniture has also been used, such as wood, metal and some rattan to bring in a natural element. The custom-made wooden coffee table and oversized leather couch are the signature pieces of the living room, creating interest and comfort. The glass-top, eight-seater dining table demands attention, with the gold, back and white marble painting on the wall beautifully reflecting on its surface. Rugs with varying textures also feature in most rooms, creating warmth and a deluxe feel.

Kirsty Badenhorst Interiors turned an empty shell into a stunning, carefully crafted home, where all of the complementary elements come together to create a sophisticated end product.

Residency PRogRammes Changing EuropE

“The trouble is: you think you have time.”Buddha

With many permanent residency programmes in Europe no longer available or changing their investment criteria to be more expensive, there are fewer and fewer options to consider.

Over the past few months, we have seen the following substantial changes:

• Portugal has closed their Golden Visa programme.

• Greece has increased the minimum investment amount to €500,000.

• Ireland has abolished the Residency by Investment scheme.

• Malta requires proof of assets of at least €500,000 with at least €150,000 in financial assets.

• Spain is considering doubling the minimum investment amount or abolishing the programme altogether.

BUT…… Cyprus is still open! Recently, Cyprus has made two changes to their Fast

Track programme:

• parents and in-laws no longer qualify; and

• there is an increase in the proof of annual income.

But the minimum investment remains unchanged. This is the ONLY Englishspeaking country in Europe with an affordable and attractive programme that is still available. There’s never been a better time to explore investing in Cyprus to realise your plan B!

Cyprus has been voted one of the safest countries in the world and offers a safe, solid environment in which to invest in real estate. Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries – especially homes right on or near the Med.

As an ex-pat, you are not restricted to buying only in Special Designated Areas (SDAs), nor are you prescribed to stay in the country every year to retain your residency. Being able to rent your property out has the

real benefit where you can earn a decent Euro-based income. There is a high demand for both long-term rentals and short-term holiday lets. Not only will your asset generate income for you, but you have complete peace of mind that the property purchase is legitimate and your ownership is guaranteed.

Cypriot Realty is your trusted partner to realise your plan B in Europe. We organise personalised property inspection trips to look at the property options and experience for yourself the lifestyle on offer. From arranging meetings with taxation and legal specialists to opening up your offshore bank account – we hold your hand every step of the way.

Legends

& Lore

The Midlands area has a long, rich history, with some buildings dating back to the 1800s. So, it is no surprise that myths, folklores and ghost stories are tied to many sites within the small towns. We dive deep into two popular myths that have been contested for decades by Midlands residents. Whether you’re a sceptic or a believer, why not read more and make up your own mind?

The Howick Falls Monster

Part of the Umgeni River, Howick Falls is around 95 metres high. Many tourists visit the viewing platform to see this majestic spot, but it is more than just a beautiful waterfall. Many visitors also hope to catch a glimpse of the mystical water monster, the Inkanyamba.

This beast is known to have a horse-like (or sometimes zebra-like) head with a snake-like body and a crest down

its extremely long neck, regarded as a ‘giant serpent’. It resides in the pool of the falls, however it is not confined there. It has also been placed in Midmar Dam and dams in the Dargle area. The Inkanyamba supposedly causes seasonal storms when it is angry, most active in summer.

Because of the creature’s supernatural powers, the local Zulu residents feared

this aquatic “rain animal” and have great respect for the waterfall (called KwaNoggaza which means “Place of the Tall One”). It is known that only sangomas can safely approach the falls and sacrificed goats and chickens to the monster and offered it prayers to keep it happy.

According to Xhosa folklore, once a year, the Inkanyamba leaves the falls in

32 | www.theMIDLANDSMAgAzINe.co.zA
WORDS Jordyn trolliP

the form of a tornado and searches the sky for a mate.

On a more sinister note, after a girl was pulled under the river and vanished roughly 30 years ago, the monster is said to eat those that drown in the falls. The creature has also been connected to unexplained disappearances of domestic animals.

There have been many sightings of the Inkanyamba, including in 1962 when a Conservation Services Ranger saw

a monster with a horse-like head on a sand bank near Midmar Dam, but it disappeared into a river when he approached. Interestingly, the caretaker of a nearby caravan park saw the Inkanyamba twice in 1971 and 1981, when it allegedly raised its head and neck 10 metres out of the pool.

Most sceptics believe the Inkanyamba was confused for a group of giant, carnivorous eels, and it is highly improbable that a huge monster lives in the pool. But one can always wonder...

LOcaL
“While many people claim to have seen the beast, sceptics believe claims of a 10-metre body are exaggerated, and that it is merely a large log.”

“It’s a family hotel with traditional values and our customers think she adds a homely quality to the place. When a building is this old, it is likely that somebody has died here.”

The Ghost of Room 10

Affectionately known as “Notties Hotel”, Nottingham Road Hotel dates back to 1854 and has the oldest pub in the KZN Midlands. With a building that old, it’s no surprise there is a resident ghost!

Nottingham Road Hotel is said to be haunted by Charlotte. She is a friendly ghost who roams the halls and stairway but spends most of her time in room 10. The story goes that she died when she was pushed (or jumped) off room 10’s balcony during the Second Anglo-Boer War, although no accurate record of her death has been found.

but the most popular versions pose that she was a beautiful lady of the night who often entertained the British soldiers that visited the inn and tavern (or a chambermaid, depending on who’s telling the story!). Charlotte either got into a vicious fight with a client who refused to pay her and was pushed over the balcony, or, more poetically, she fell in love with a British soldier and, after hearing he was killed in battle, was so heartbroken she jumped from the balcony and died as a result of her injuries. Although Charlotte met a terrible end, she is described by many visitors and even

some suggest is an effort to show off her best features. Guests of room 10 have sometimes been lucky enough to have their suitcases unpacked by Charlotte, clothes tidied and neatly folded, and the bedding straightened. She is also known to turn the taps on and off and remove pictures from the walls and put them on the floor.

Creepily, Charlotte loves to ring the room service bell for room 22 – a room that doesn’t exist. Along with the usual noises of knocks, footsteps and shuffling, some have seen Charlotte in the (ghostly) flesh or in their photographs, and children have spoken of talking to a “nice lady”.

Hopewell Supplies in Howick shares a few easypeasy tips for the blossoming new season ahead.

Spring is one of the happiest times in the garden as everything comes to life. It is also the best time to revamp and start a new garden. Hopewell Supplies has a few tips to make your garden into a spring sensation.

• Preparation is key, and that starts with none other than a good spring clean. This is all about neatening, organising and removing old growth and making way for new nutrients to access plants.

• Having an organised workspace with your tools and equipment makes tasks at hand much easier to do. Think about sharping blades, oiling handles and clearing out clutter. Additionally, you can add to your gardening kit with our large variety of tools and equipment.

• Having a plan or vision in mind on what you would like your garden to look like and what you would like to plant makes the transition and task much easier. For the novice gardener, the less complicated the better. Plant what brings you joy! A few plants that are perfect to introduce in spring include Freesia, Fuchsia, Gazania, Petunia, Viola, Lobelia, Lupinus, Verbena and Statice.

help aid the soil with nutrients for better growth and always water afterward. For an extra boost apply mulch to maintain moisture and stop weeds from sprouting through.

• The exciting part: planting and adding to your garden! It’s important to read up on your plant’s information or ask the Hopewells experts while you shop. Whether you are planting from trays or sprinkling some of our seeds, this will inform you regarding the watering, light requirements and ideal planting space. This will all help your plants thrive.

• Once you have finished preparing your glorious soil, sow your seeds and cover them with soil as indicated on your packet or tray. Water well and cover them with straw or mulch to retain moisture. It is a good idea to thin out weaker seedlings to allow space for stronger ones to grow and develop.

• Pest control is always something to consider as it will ensure the success of your plants by protecting them. We like to choose organic solutions to spray on our plants, such as Ludwig’s Insect Spray, Kirchhoff's Margaret Roberts Organic Insecticide or fungicide.

We ‘HOPE’ that you will have a beautiful, joyful spring garden with these tips at hand!

• Preparing the soil to avoid future toil is a must. Give your soil some TLC as this will create the perfect growing grounds. Add generous amounts of our compost and fertilisers to your garden beds to Hopewell Supplies

Shifting gears to the realm of gourmet burgers, we introduce Paul's Gourmet Burgers, an event-driven burger brand that offers an exclusive range of gourmet burgers. Founded in 2021 during the lockdown, Paul's passion for crafting exceptional burgers led to the establishment of this unique brand. Paul's Gourmet Burgers continues to make appearances through popups and market events in the greater Midlands area, with updates available on Facebook and Instagram.

Elevating your burger game on the braai starts with Paul's insights:

• Creating the patties: Ask your local butcher for fatty mince for tastier patties (you will not make a tasty patty with lean mince!). Don't add extras like eggs or breadcrumbs - it ruins the texture. Avoid adding spices or sauces too, as it affects the patty's structure and makes it dense. Keep the patty simple for a meaty taste.

• Seasoning: Shape your patty gently (remember not to overwork the mince) and season generously with salt and black pepper on both sides.

• Grilling: Use wood or charcoal for the best flavour. Turn the patties once on a hot grill (around five minutes per side). For best results, use a Weber, and keep it closed as much as possible. The fat in the patty will render, drip onto the coals, and make the most delicious

smoke. Paul advises that when using a high-fat content mince, do not undercook your patties – you want all the fat to render and this will give you the juiciest patty ever!

• Melting the cheese: Put cheese on the patty after flipping to let it melt while the other side cooks.

• Bun choice: Use premium burger rolls to avoid a soggy mess.

• Burger layers: Balance different elements for a great burger:

- Freshness (lettuce, cabbage and rocket)

- Crunch (onion rings, hash browns and chips)

- Acidity (pickles, mayo and glaze)

- Sweetness (sauces, marmalade and chutney)

- Heat (a bit of chilli, if desired)

- Fat (patty, cheese and sauces)

An Enchanting Stay at

ANEW HOTEL HILTON

Welcome to an exquisite fourstar architectural masterpiece nestled in the quaint town of Hilton Pietermaritzburg. ANEW Hotel Hilton exudes old-world charm while being renowned for its exceptional, friendly, and efficient service. Whether you're a lover of the countryside or are simply seeking a peaceful retreat, this is the perfect destination for you.

As I stepped inside, the grandiose chandelier hanging from the high ceilings in the foyer caught my eye. It's a true showpiece that you can't miss. The receptionist welcomed us with a warm, inviting smile before we ventured to our room. Our suite was spacious and well-appointed, featuring two king-size beds and a modern bathroom with a beautiful free-standing bathtub. Each room has a TV, and we could even log in to our

Netflix accounts to enjoy our favourite movies and series. We were also treated to a lovely welcome platter with fresh fruit, nuts, and biltong.

After settling in, it was time to explore the grounds. A highlight was their sparkling pool, surrounded by a European-inspired outdoor seating area. I was impressed by how the hotel seamlessly blends classic elegance with modern comforts, catering to both

families and business travellers with top-notch amenities that exceeded my expectations. The hotel's history intrigued us. The original building had around 30 rooms. After ANEW Hotels & Resorts took over in 2019, they renovated and added a new wing, now offering a total of 97 fabulous rooms. If you're planning any sort of event, you're in good hands as the hotel boasts eight conference rooms, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and successfully for your seminar, wedding, or group gathering.

The restaurant’s menu caters to all tastes, offering chef specials, pizzas, burgers, pasta dishes, and salads. We opted for the mouthwatering beef brisket and oxtail with mashed potatoes, as well as a succulent pork belly with a spicy ginger glaze and mashed potatoes. It was absolutely delicious!

After enjoying a scrumptious buffet breakfast, we left feeling revived and relaxed. Whether you want to explore the Midlands Meander, escape from everyday life, or host an important event, ANEW Hotel Hilton Pietermaritzburg ensures a delightful and memorable experience for every guest.

Wimpy Howick You’re Always Welcome

Every South African knows and loves their local Wimpy - it’s been a part of our culture since the franchise first opened in Durban in 1967. As we walked into Wimpy Howick, we were invited by a relaxing, friendly atmosphere. We had a cosy table by the window that gave us enough privacy to enjoy ourselves, and we could’ve sat there for hours chatting amidst the other patrons. It’s the perfect space to sit back and enjoy a meal or get some work done.

We started with our drinks, which included a good ‘ol Americano (or in Wimpy’s case, an “Africano”), Bar One Hot Chocolate (a great choice for those who don’t want coffee), which had just the right amount of sweetness, Moja Cooler, a cold beverage filled with flavours of mango and ginger, and the refreshing Naartjie Frozen Lemonade.

For mains, we devoured a selection of tastes, from breakfast to lunch. The Mixed Grill is the ideal choice for a hungry meat-lover, including juicy beef boerewors, delicious sirloin steak, a classic beef patty with Famous Wimpy tomato relish, bacon, caramelised onion, one fried egg and chips. We also tried their popular

1/4 Chicken Meal with chips and crispy onion rings, which comes with a free soda (this promotion runs until 25 September 2023)! The chicken was tender with a smokey, braai-like taste while the crispy onion rings were light and moreish. And, you can’t dig into a portion of Wimpy’s chips without their iconic tomato and mustard sauces!

Wimpy’s burgers never disappoint. The Crispy Stack included a perfectly grilled beef patty with all the trimmings: streaky bacon, crispy fried onions, cheese, tomato, lettuce, and a choice of creamy or chilli mayo (we had to go for some spice!). All of the flavours and textures came together deliciously with every bite. If you want to enjoy a meat-free meal, the Avo on Toast is hearty and scrumptious. It consisted of two slices of toast (white or brown bread), cream cheese, generous slivers of avo, cherry tomatoes, and scrambled or fried the way you want. This dish is actually made with fried eggs, but at Wimpy, they’re so accommodating that even when we preferred scrambled they were happy to do that for us. We just had to end the meal off with some dessert, so we shared a few classic Wimpy treats. The mouth-watering Kit Kat Waffle is

topped with Kit Kat chocolate spread and pieces as well as two generous dollops of ice cream. We indulged in a slice of the dreamy and delectable Triple Choc Cake, a sponge cake with a chocolate mousse centre and ganache topping. Our new favourite is definitely the Milk Tart Gourmet Shake, which tasted precisely like the South African classic - rich and creamy with that note of cinnamon.

We all left feeling “magies vol, ogies toe” as they say, and we couldn’t have ordered a better selection. Throughout our experience, the waitrons were attentive and had no problem switching up our meals a bit according to how we liked them. As we waved the smiling staff goodbye, we were already planning our next visit to Wimpy!

Women’s Wellness and Health Physiotherapy

Wellness can be defined as the act of practising healthy habits on a daily basis to attain a wholesome balance of physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Women’s wellness focuses on six dimensions: physical, intellectual, emotional, occupational, social and spiritual. These elements all influence one another. Although this experience is subjective to the individual woman, the overall aim is to become more self-aware and make choices that lead to a healthier and more fulfilling existence.

So, where does Women’s Health Physiotherapy play a role?

Women’s Health Physiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy that is aimed at identifying, exploring and assisting female patients to gain knowledge and therefore control of their own bodies and provide treatment for dysfunctions that may be present. As women, we journey through the different phases of hormonal life, from puberty to becoming an adult, into pregnancy and childbearing, postpartum and then the various stages of menopause. These hormonal changes in each phase have a direct impact on our physical, emotional and mental wellness. Women’s Health Physiotherapy can assist with a better understanding of these phases and the effects on one’s body, and address challenges that may arise in each phase.

Here is how Women’s Health Physiotherapy can assist in ensuring the wellness of women in the various phases:

• Puberty: During puberty, a girl will experience bodily changes for the first time in her life. Education

about these changes, periods, and the role they play in pelvic health is important.

• Adulthood: As we mature into adulthood, our sexual awareness and needs change. Our pelvic floor, bladder and bowel health can influence our wellness.

• Pregnancy: Prenatal care and advice include exercise during pregnancy, prepping for birth and labour, and treatment of pain, pelvic floor issues, or any other symptoms presenting during the pregnancy.

• Postpartum: This phase is often called the fourth trimester, where our bodies feel “different” after giving birth. Common changes experienced are pelvic floor dysfunctions such as bladder and bowel issues, prolapse and hip, back and/or pelvic pain. Returning to activity postpartum is a carefully guided aspect of postpartum care.

• Menopause: We address common pelvic floor symptoms that may arise with this hormonal shift, such as incontinence or overactive bladder syndrome, and advise on how better to manage and support “The Change”.

Achieving wellness is an act of balancing many balls at once. Education, discussing what are often taboo topics, and proactive management of our body empowers us to achieve this wellness balance. As a woman, mother, wife and professional, I am constantly in awe of the female body’s capability to steer through these various phases and realise that with the correct guidance and support of various professionals, we can do more than simply survive – we can thrive!

IS YOUR BRAIN PLAYING TRICKS ON YOU?

Human psychology has always interested me. At university, I studied the subject and majored in industrial psychology. I probably didn’t realise how understanding people’s behaviours would be so critical in later years, but there is no doubt that in our personal and professional lives, our decisions and attitudes are formed and guided by years of experiences and the environments in which we have found ourselves.

In real estate and investing, our paradigms, assumptions and past experiences often have a big impact on our decisions. Whether buying or selling, we are prone to a number of psychological forces that ultimately will dictate our decisions whether we like it or not. One such force is cognitive or confirmation bias.

Simply explained, everyone likes being proven correct. Most people look for information and insight to confirm what they already believe and avoid information that challenges their pre-existing beliefs. Often, even less-than-clear evidence is used to support what people believe. It manifests in many ways, including how we research real estate investment opportunities or market conditions. For example, a real estate investor who enjoys the benefits of a housing boom is likely to attribute his or her success to personal acumen and skill. In contrast, investors who see the value of their real estate holdings plummet tend to blame the market, other investors, or just plain bad luck. Our brains look for ways to confirm our beliefs.

Another similar trait is emotional bias. There is some overlap between cognitive and emotional bias, but both are prevalent in the real estate space. An example might be someone saying: “I love the look of the architecture in this street. It must be a great place to invest” or “I think my home is totally unique and special, so it must be worth more and will sell quicker than others”. Simply put, it is taking action based on feelings instead of facts. Emotional biases are deeply ingrained in the psychology of investors and are generally much harder to overcome.

So how can you overcome it?

The first step is to recognise that your brain is programming you to confirm your own beliefs. Once you realise this, it’s a question of actively seeking out information that goes against what you believe and understand. Find a view that’s contrary to your own and think about it for a while. If you’re a seller, ask your agent for a comprehensive Current Market Analysis and Valuation. Don’t take it personally if the findings are contrary to your beliefs. If you’re a buyer struggling to find the right investment, but perhaps being hindered by your own biases as far as location, size, style or price are concerned, listen to an expert and be more open. Ask questions. Challenge your own views. In the end, whether or not you change your stance, you would have made a conscious effort to deal with your inherent bias.
