Located in Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate, this stunning home rests on a hill overlooking the ocean. Clad in glass, every design element and material has been carefully considered to make the best of the surroundings, greenery and sea. The house was designed using a modern contemporary approach, incorporating elements of seaside architecture and adding an eco-friendly twist.

Gerhard Breedt of Gerhard Architect and Django Ellinas of Evolution Construction collaborated to bring this dream house to life. Gerhard has been conceptualising and creating beautiful homes for over two decades. Django, who is the proud owner of this house, is a veteran in the construction industry and is currently

developing properties in local upcoming estates. They both focus on a niche market to offer their clients quality and personalised service.

This is a two-storey house with six bedrooms, all equipped with their own bathrooms, two double garages, a pool, a jacuzzi, a boma and an outdoor bar, among other features. Every site has something special about it and, from conception, Django had a clear vision to maximise the access to the ocean this property afforded them. While trying to do this, they also had to be considerate of the houses behind them who would also try to access the same views they were trying to make the most of. So, they designed the garage and the solid walls to face the rest of the estate, using angles to

create privacy. This resulted in a whole wing of the house facing the ocean. Here, they used glass wisely, knowing where it would make the most difference and opening up the views of the ocean and green belt.

Looking closer at the layout, Gerhard designed a courtyard housing a tropical jungle-like section of greenery in the middle of the house. This courtyard is used as a separation element, splitting off the more private wings from the social areas. It also creates a central entrance from which everything disperses - doors open into this atrium from all sides. This also

means that the lounge and entertainment areas look out onto this unique space, so that whichever way you look, you are never facing walls, only greenery or the ocean!

This courtyard also serves to create ventilation. By being connected to most parts of the home, opening up those doors creates a cross-flow of air throughout the house, having a cooling effect. Of course, this ventilation will help in the hotter summer months, also aiding in lowering energy consumption. Gerhard and Django have used multiple design and material factors to ensure this home is as eco-friendly as possible.

The house is fitted with full solar energy and gas connections so that they are self-sustaining and have an uninterrupted energy supply. The slabs used are thicker, which also helps conserve energy as it offers better insulation, cooling and heating the interior faster. As glass allows sunlight to pass through and traps the heat in a room, making it hot, they used energy-efficient glass throughout to prevent this.

There is a seamless effect thanks to the frameless glass used for the

exterior and interior balustrades. This seamless thread extends to the entertainment area with the pool - the views out to the ocean and overflow rim create a wateron-water effect of tranquillity.

For Django, he intended this home to be a space where he could enjoy retired life and wake up every day to the ocean. He designed and decorated the interior, creating a symbiosis between the style of the exterior and the interior. It was designed with a modern and minimalistic aesthetic in mind with plain white walls, but pops of colour here and there, all while being careful not to clash with the greens of the courtyard. The red Calore pellet fireplace, Mark Oliver sculptures and scattered artwork bring warmth and character to break up the white interior. The transition from the white oak floating staircase to the wooden Oggie flooring on the second floor flows nicely and softens the stark white walls.

Having this second floor is one of Django’s highlights, as well as the panoramic views of the ocean throughout the majority of the house. For Gerhard, his favourite element would be the welcoming atmosphere of the home, with the off-shutter, floating slabs, highlevel windows of the garages, and double-volume entrance with glass reaching up to the ceiling.

Taking time and paying attention to detail, this house is absolutely stunning and truly a gem of Zululami. This is the fruit of hard work, inspiration and collaboration.

Trends come and go. If you’re anything like me, you’ve fallen into the sneaky trap of decor hypes, which you end up hating a year later (I can still remember my childhood bedroom filled with teal blue and lime green decor pieces). Another consequence of being a victim of trends is that your spaces end up looking like everyone else’s. Well, we have just the cure: secondhand shopping! Just a short drive outside of town, The Vintage Barn sits, waiting for you to explore its treasures.

Megan and Craig have been North Coast locals for over 20 years. In 2018, Craig decided to sell his food franchise business, looking for a change, and started Craig’s Van, a home movers and removals business. The couple quickly realised that much of the furniture their clients were throwing away could be easily fixed, so that’s exactly what Craig did. After a few months, they had enough refurbished furniture to fill five store rooms! They decided it was time to find a more permanent spot to offer their timeless pre-loved pieces to locals. Last July, The Vintage Barn came to life.

“We are road-trippers, so the shop is inspired by the Cape padstals and Route 66 in the US,” says Megan. The Vintage Barn is filled to the brim with vintage (older than 30 years) and antique (older than 100 years) furniture and decor, as well as collectible items such as posters and tea sets. Stocking everything from arcade games and typewriters to eclectic glassware and the iconic carshaped couch, they provide the perfect opportunity for you to include one-of-a-kind pieces in your home, whether you want to fill a gap with a statement decoration or need a new reading chair. The Vintage Barn is also a stockist of wine barrels bought directly from the Cape!

Megan is an advocate for “mixing the old with the new” to create spaces that show off your personality. “I love history, and a lot of our pieces have stories behind them that their previous owners share with us. This gives them character.” They get most of their products from online auctions, collectors and locals who are clearing out their homes or downscaling. Megan keeps an eye out for objects that are particularly unusual. They also offer furniture needing a bit of TLC in their “Bargain Shed”, some of which Craig goes on to refurbish to sell. He also makes gorgeous new items, such as dining room tables and chairs.

Although their furniture and decor are their best sellers, they offer so much more. Their ‘candy stand’ is popular, as well as their “man cave” stocked with CDs, records and Archie

Comics as well as bar lights which they make to order. The Milkshake Bar is perfect for hungry shoppers needing a delicious toasted sandwich, hot chips, fresh coffee, milkshakes and soft drinks in glass bottles!

If you’re anything like me, you might be wondering: What is the most unusual item that has come through their barn doors? Megan has a few. “We were once given a 90-year-old cattle trough that came all the way from Australia. It has now found a permanent home in Fairview Estates. I also love our set of drive-in speakers from the 70s. These are not for sale though, yet!”

On top of discovering rare finds, shopping for pre-loved furniture and decor for your home also helps the environment. “I am against following the trends because it promotes consumerism. The world is already too full of stuff. The more we produce, the more we consume, and often products end up in landfills. Factories also damage the earth by polluting the air and water,” explains Megan. Secondhand shopping is truly a win-win scenario!

Above all, Megan wants shoppers to enjoy a unique experience while searching for gems, and her favourite thing to do is watch the reactions of those walking into The Vintage Barn for the first time. “We get a lot of people saying “wow” when they walk in. It’s the romance of the old.”

and more substantial speakers in a lounge creating an “it’s as though the band is in the room” feel.

Home automation greatly enhances a home’s security. Surveillance cameras, door locks, and alarm systems can all be integrated for comprehensive monitoring and control. Remote accessibility provides an extra layer of safety. An exciting aspect of the current and future state of home automation is its

With many permanent residency programmes in Europe no longer available or changing their investment criteria to be more expensive, there are fewer and fewer options to consider.

Over the past few months, we have seen the following substantial changes:

• Portugal has closed their Golden Visa programme.

• Greece has increased the minimum investment amount to €500,000.

• Ireland has abolished the Residency by Investment scheme.

Coastal Cuisine

Beneath blue skies, where waves hit the shore, dine on treasures of the sea at one of Ballito’s great restaurants. Al Pescatore has been delighting customers with fantastic food for over thirty years, and we were so excited to try some of their delicious dishes. When we stepped inside, we were greeted by a stunning ocean view and the scent of salty air and mouthwatering aromas from the kitchen. If you haven't been to Al Pescatore in a while, Trevor and his daughter, Nicole, have given the place a modern Mediterranean makeover while still keeping the classic, authentic Pesci’s bar corner.

After we sat down, Nicole suggested a few drinks to start - a glass of Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) to tickle the tastebuds and a tasty Candy Cane cocktail with fresh juices to satisfy our sweet cravings. Of course, we couldn't miss the chance to sip on a classic Aperol Spritz while looking out over the ocean, but the highlight was their Als' Vermoed - a colourful and flavorful

mix of fynbos and naartjie gin aperitif, dry lemon, and sun-dried orange syrup served in a martini glass - so refreshing!

Al Pescatore is known for its delicious seafood, so we had to try their Mediterranean Grill. This dish showcases umami flavours, with a grilled hake, six large grilled prawns, four grilled mussels in their half shell, a basted and char-grilled seafood kebab, and, the star of the dish, the phyllo pastry stuffed with peppadews and prawns, served with three moreish sauces. This dish is best paired with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne. We also enjoyed their fresh tuna tartare - diced raw tuna with coriander, sushi ginger, mayo, and almonds on avocado. It was very flavourful with soy sauce and a slice of garlic focaccia.

A visit to an Italian restaurant wouldn't be complete without pasta or pizza. Al Pescatore puts their own spin on these favourites while catering to all tastes. We all had a slice of their Garden pizza

- a vegetarian delight with olives, cherry tomatoes, creamed spinach, red onion, and cottage cheese.

To end our meal, we satisfied our sweet tooth. If you've been to Al Pescatore before, you'll recognise their classic cake tray, which lets you pick your dessert. We couldn't resist the Bar One Cheesecakecreamy, chocolatey, and served with ice cream.
