PLACES LOCAL IN THIS ISSUE

There’s something special about returning to a town you’ve been away from for a few months, especially when it’s the community that makes the place so special. Whether it’s for a short visit or returning for a slightly longer stay, heading back fills you with a sense of comfort, deep belonging, and special connection. It’s great to know your way around, the best places to shop at, your favorite restaurants, and the best places to just hang out whether that be a local park or sports field. I love how this sense of familiarity is so incredibly grounding, especially after spending time away.

We’re looking forward to being back in Southlake this summer and experiencing all of the above. Being away from Southlake, and more specifically the wonderful people we have connected with and are honored to call friends, makes us excited to return! We’ve also put together a great edition that celebrates this time of year, the town of Southlake, and the people that make up our amazing community. Here are some of the highlights from this edition.

Our feature “Summer Travelin’ Had Me a Blast” offers up a few ideas when you start planning your upcoming summer trip. Check out our list of the most popular cities, and even countries, you should consider for your next trip.

We also get to know the Jordan family in this edition’s family feature. This wonderful local family includes three Varsity Dragon baseball players! Besides loving baseball, we also see just how entrepreneurial they are and how much they love traveling.

Our Dragon cheerleaders won nationals this year (we’re sure you already know!) and what an achievement! Cassie, their Varsity Coach, shares with us what inspires and drives this remarkable team.

I’m delighted that we got to write about the Southlake Chamber of Commerce. I am a big fan of the team and the great things they do for our community, so we thought it was time to get to know more about what makes them, and the local business community they support, so successful.

Lastly, you’ll get to read all about (and hopefully sign up for) the Fit City Challenge. It’s a great summer initiative that started last year between Southlake and Keller and this year, Team Southlake is determined to win! The team shares some information and inspiration to get us all involved and keep the Southlake team pushing for that win.

It’s a great edition - perfect as we head toward summer. We hope you enjoy all our stories as much as we have loved bringing them to you! God bless.

A LIFETIME OF INSPIRATION: FAITH, FAMILY, AND FOOD

My husband, Ronell, loves to tell stories about my grandmother being his favorite person. He always brags about her amazing cooking skills, wit, and sense of humor. Grandma Dot (short for Dorothy) would often regale him with funny stories about me.

My grandmother graciously gifted her time to family, friends, and her church community. Each interaction had a lasting impact on others. Her inspiring elements have made me the wife, mother, friend, and businessperson I am today: a combination of faith, family, and food.

A WINNING COMBINATION

Growing up in a tiny town in rural Mississippi, there wasn’t a lot to do after school each day. So, after getting off the school bus at our home, my sisters and I would grab a snack and do our homework. Then my sisters would ride bikes to their friends’ houses to play games or go to the park. I’d walk to my grandmother’s house, which was a small, all-wood structure with a large front room, a small den, an even smaller kitchen, and three tiny bedrooms.

Normally, my grandmother would be sitting on the couch finishing up her guilty pleasure, watching soap operas. But, when she saw me come through the door, she’d smile, kiss me on my cheek, and ask me about my day. Only a few minutes into the conversation, she’d slowly amble to the kitchen, pull out some pots, and start cooking dinner, with me standing beside her at the sink or the stove.

Without fail, the topic would turn to her faith. Though a product of the Jim Crow South, and now well into her 60s, my grandmother’s belief in God was unwavering. “He will

provide,” she would always say. On Wednesday nights and Sundays, I’d often accompany her to church, walking beside her the entire way, taking in her encyclopedic knowledge of scripture.

After service, my parents and my siblings would return to my grandmother’s house and we’d stand around the small table in her kitchen, bless the food, and then enjoy an amazing Sunday meal. Too full to move, we’d all return to the couches in her front room and end the day as we started it: talking about the church service and enjoying time together.

My grandmother died more than two decades ago, but her inspiration lives on in my life in myriad ways. On Saturdays after volunteering or Sundays after church, our family always grabs a meal together. What seems to my daughters like an occasion to enjoy boba tea and food from our favorite spots is an opportunity for me and Ronell to talk to them about the importance of our family and our faith.

From the Mayor

Can you believe April is already here? It’s the perfect month to get outside and enjoy Southlake’s parks and trails. With more than 1,100 acres of parkland, there is something for everyone. This month, I am excited to share some details about the latest addition to our amazing Bicentennial Park – a fantastic pickleball court complex.

The complex was approved by the Council in March and is part of the Parks Master Plan. It will consist of nine dedicated pickleball courts across the way from the Southlake Tennis Center. It will also include a pavilion area with picnic tables and bleacher seating for the championship court.

If you’ve ever played pickleball, the distinctive pop of the ball hitting the paddle is a dead giveaway. We are still working on an exact timeline for when it will open, but I am just excited that we are well on our way. For the latest updates, visit www.experiencesouthlaketexas.com.

We are also in the middle of our Get Fit City Challenge against the City of Keller and the City of Colleyville. I hope you are participating! Last year we lost by a hair to Keller, but we are taking the crown this year! The challenge ends on May 15, but you can sign up anytime. Help Southlake become the fittest City! For more information, visit the Experience Southlake website.

That’s it for this month. As always, be sure to stay in touch. You can find me on Facebook and Twitter and the City on Facebook and Instagram.

See you all in June!

Every time I have the opportunity to interview a Southlake family, I feel so incredibly honored and really learn why Southlake is such an amazing place. It simply comes down to the people. If you haven’t met the Jordan Family, I hope you get the chance.

WORDS JENNIFER CASEY

One thing is for sure, you’ll find the Jordan family at Carroll Senior High for every game cheering on the Lady Dragons. They have three varsity players and an upcoming player at Carroll Middle School. But, before we talk about their phenomenal girls, let me introduce you to their mom and dad.

Their father, Walsh Jordan, played basketball growing up in Louisiana and Detroit. He then moved to Dallas where he lived with his sister and her husband, attending Lake Hill Prep in 10th grade. While there, they won the State Basketball Championship. He also played college ball at Ole Miss and Oklahoma City University.

Since 1995, Walsh has played professionally with some of the top leagues worldwide, including the European League and preseason with the Mavericks. He has won championships on every level that he has played on, including several European championships, such as the prestigious NEBL Championship. Walsh played for several European powerhouse teams such as Lietuvos Rytas, Union Olympia, and Buducnost. He has also led teams to several Final Fours and Elite Eights. He finished a successful career winning championships in Europe and came back to Dallas where he started training Texas basketball players. As a trainer, he helped enhance the games of over 100 professional and collegiate athletes worldwide.

WWW.SOUTHLAKEBLVDMAGAZINE.COM | 19

Not long after arriving back in Dallas, he met his wife, Tierny, through mutual friends. They have been married for 18 years and have been together for 25. Tierny grew up in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, playing a little basketball but mainly field hockey and lacrosse. “I wanted to escape the snow and cold, so I chose to attend college at Tulsa University in Oklahoma where I studied Management Information Systems,” said Tierny.

She worked in corporate America for eight years but then decided she had

bigger goals. So, she and Walsh got into real estate investing, first flipping houses and then becoming real estate agents, with Tierny also getting her broker’s license. She also started their own internet marketing company in 2011 that generates leads for their near 600 Tierny Jordan Team (first based in Irving at the Toyota Music Factory) agents. They closed over 1700 transactions in 2022 and have agents all over the U.S., Canada, India, and Mexico.

Now onto Walsh and Tierny’s fabulous four Jordan girls! Milania (class of 2025), Natalia (class of 2026), Gianna (class of 2026), and Nadia (class of 2027) started their basketball career in kindergarten at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship where they won the State Championship (yes, there is a state tournament for kindergarten-aged basketball players!). Walsh said that when Milania hit second grade, basketball turned into travel ball. They were already invested in watching Tierny’s oldest daughter Armani, who had gotten a full scholarship to play basketball at SMU. He knew with four girls, they couldn’t participate in travel ball, so the girls stopped playing until Milania got to sixth grade.

“We love not having to drive far to great restaurants, and the people have also been great. We have a core group of great people and the girls love being Dragons.”
PHOTO CAMERA CASH PHOTOGRAPHY

The family made their move to Southlake from Mansfield in 2020. Walsh was quite familiar with the area as most of his basketball training had been in Southlake and Grapevine. He trained some Southlake players including Kamray Mickens (SMU) and Kennedy Leonard (CU) and also ran many camps in Southlake and Grapevine. Walsh started the girls back into a club league in Mansfield. “They had fallen pretty far behind the others who had stuck with it, but it didn’t take long to get them caught up,” he said. They all started playing again in seventh grade at Carroll Middle School.

Milania is currently a 10th grade Varsity Lady Dragon who plays guard. Walsh shared, “She started getting offers in eighth grade from George Mason, Ole Miss, SMU, and Abilene Christian. She’s had calls from Texas and TCU as well.” Milania earned the All-Area Newcomer of the Year and was on the national

basketball championship team for AAU basketball.

Natalia and Gianna are both freshman Lady Dragons. Walsh shared, “They aren’t true twins. They are Irish twins.” This means the two sisters were born 10 and a half months apart. Natalie and Gianna are varsity starters along with Milania. The girls have practice daily from 2:15 to 4:15. Nadia is currently playing basketball at Carroll Middle School and seems to be on the same path as her sisters.

What do the Jordans do when they aren’t playing or watching basketball? “We like to travel as much as possible,” says Tienry. “We’re very purposeful in our travel and love going back to where I grew up - Cape Cod, Massachusetts - to hang out with cousins. The girls have also been invited to play in a league in Boston.” They headed to New Jersey for spring break where they

spent time at “The American Dream”, an amusement/water park, with all of their cousins. Tierny’s mother has 13 brothers and sisters!

Tierny and Walsh both shared that they have a strong faith and attend church at The Potter’s House in Dallas led by Bishop T.D. Jakes.

As far as Southlake goes, they love it. Being in real estate, Tierny shared that it is amazing being 30 minutes from everything. “We love not having to drive far to great restaurants, and the people have also been great. Having Coach McCord (Lady Dragons Basketball Head Coach) as a role model and influence is perfect. Sally A. (Assistant Coach) transferred recently to Southlake and Walsh knew her from her playing days. We have a core group of great people and the girls love being Dragons.”

10 Years of Bobby Fest

MUSIC THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

What started as a backyard festival with a small group of friends listening to local bands has, 10 years later, transformed into the event of the year! Hundreds flock to the annual Bobbyfest to listen to great music, eat delicious food, and bid in exciting auctions.

Starting in 2013, Southlake locals Bobby and Lisa Rawls hosted Bobbyfest in their backyard. “We had a one-and-a-half acre lot in the back of our house which we just decorated to look like a party. We had auction tables, one food truck, and tents. It was

awesome but the attendance became too large so we had to move it to a new venue.”

After three years, Bobby and Lisa decided to leverage the event to raise money for charity. “We thought that if we have all these people here, why not make it for something good?”

The charity of choice came about organically and just felt right for the Rawls. “I had known Doreen from Amy’s Wish With Wings for 20 years and knew that she was doing a special program for kids who have special needs.

Doreen is the most selfless and giving person I think I’ve ever met in my life. I just wanted to help,” Lisa adds.

Amy’s Wish With Wings was founded by Doreen in 2011 when she helped Amy Stefanko (who had to learn how to walk and speak again due to complications from leukemia) recover with equineassisted services. Under Doreen’s care and instruction, Amy was able to ride a horse without a lead line and side walkers! The charity now offers these beneficial equine-assisted services for children with various needs, who also get to compete at the Chisholm Challenge Horse Show at the Fort Worth Stock Show in January.

The Bobbyfest team holds Amy’s Wish With Wings very close to their hearts. WORDS JORDYN TROLLIP PHOTOS ENDERSBY PRODUCTIONS AND GREG ROACH PHOTOGRAPHY

“What makes this charity special is the kids,” says Lisa. “It is the most gratifying and emotional experience to see these kids, who are unable to sit upright, are in a wheelchair, or can’t really speak, recover with the help of horses. There are so many different levels of need that a horse can fulfill in their lives. I start tearing up every time I talk about the first time I saw a child open up just like a flower when they got on a horse. It’s very, very special. Doreen has such an excellent and beautiful program.”

This year, Bobbyfest will have its 10th annual festival on Saturday, May 6 at The Marq. You can buy tickets on their website, www.bobbyfest.com.They believe the longevity of the event is due to their support of a local charity (and if anyone knows the Southlake community, they know that they love to give to help others) and, of course, the incredible music and atmosphere it offers! Performing at the festival is also a great opportunity for artists, as some who have performed at previous Bobbyfests have gone on to Nashville to live their dreams of creating music.

“When you attend the festival, you feel like you’re in somebody’s backyard meeting with friends, talking, listening

to great music, and eating great food. There are just good vibes at this event. I don’t think we’ve ever had anybody say that they had a terrible time. Attendees also feel great about purchasing an auction item that goes to help a child who attends the charity’s program,” explain the Rawls.

So, what is different this year at Bobbyfest? Just like every year, they will have new bands performing, new food trucks, and fun silent auction items. Singer-songwriter Guthrie Kennard will be playing his acoustic guitar with his uniquely bluesy Americano sound with a Texas twist. His album, “Ranch Road 12”, produced by Ray Wylie Hubbard, hit the second spot on the European charts and in the top 10 on the American Americana charts! Other performers playing will be Eric George (Man No Sober) with his awesome acoustic guitar, the Fort Worth-based band Legacy 4 who will perform Motown, R&B, and classic hits, and Jesse Spradlin and her band The Vintage Yell. Food trucks available will be 1956 Pizza, The Snowy Churro Texas, and Coco Shrimp.

If you’re planning on attending this year’s Bobbyfest (which we know you are!), Lisa has some tips. “Pack your chair or blanket, bring your wallet, so you can purchase some auction items, and bring your friends - lots of them! Most importantly, bring your fun and happiness to the event to support a great cause!”

History of Texas Independence Day

Let’s face it, we Texans know a lot about our state. Students all study Texas history as a required class in seventh grade. Whether you were lucky enough to be born and raised here or, as the saying goes, “I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could”, we’re proud of our 28th state!

On December 29, 1845, Texas became an official state, but we had a lot of history leading up to that moment. Back in the 1500s, the Spanish claimed Texas and took up continuous residence into the 1700s, yet never successfully settled the land beyond San Antonio de Bexar (now San Antonio). By 1820, Spain began to allow American settlers to colonize the land. A man by the name of Stephen F. Austin founded a colony in 1822 of several hundred families on the Brazos River. For many years after that, the migration of U.S. citizens continued to increase.

Texas settlers became increasingly dissatisfied with the Mexican government and Austin advocated conciliation, but the dissent against Mexico escalated into the Texas Revolution. By December 1835, Texians (Anglo-American settlers) and Tejanos (Texans of mixed Mexican and Indian descent) had captured the town of San Antonio. Two months later, on February 23, 1836, Mexican troops (under General Antonio López de Santa Anna) arrived in San Antonio to retake the city. Although Sam Houston

had ordered Texans to abandon San Antonio, a group of rebels decided to defend the town and make their stand at an abandoned Spanish mission, the Alamo. For twelve days, Mexican forces laid siege to the Alamo.

On March 2, 1836, Texas formally declared its independence from Mexico. The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed at Washington-on-theBrazos, now commonly referred to as the “birthplace of Texas”. Similar to the United States Declaration of Independence, this document focused on the rights of citizens to “life” and “liberty” but with an emphasis on the “property of the citizen”.

On March 6, four days after Texas declared independence, Mexican troops scaled the mission’s walls.

183 defenders were killed, including several Mexicans who had fought for Texas independence. Their oil-soaked bodies were set on fire outside the Alamo. The Republic of Texas won its independence on April 21, 1836, with a final battle along the San Jacinto River.

There were many heroes who fought in the Texas Revolution, and most have become household names in Texas, such as Crockett, Bowie, Burleson, Fannin, Houston, Lamar, Milam, and Travis – to name only a few.

It’s amazing to think that there have been six flags that have flown over Texas. Yes, folks, it’s not just an amusement park! These flags are France, Spain, Mexico, Texas, Confederate, and America.

For the last 45 years, the Southlake Chamber of Commerce has been supporting and promoting the local business community through educational programs, networking events, and leadership development. We got in touch with their team to learn more about what makes our Chamber of Commerce so successful.

It’s hard not to admire the success of the Southlake Chamber of Commerce and the difference they make in our city. At the center of the Chamber is building strong relationships between local businesses, community leaders, and government officials, thereby creating a solid network of support and communication.

Behind this organization are four fulltime, tenured members. At the helm is Mark Guilbert, the President and CEO. Maurine Grant is the Director of Operations and Communications, Tracy Matlock is the Director of Member Relations, and Victoria Sommer is the

Associate Director of Communications and Member Relations. They also have a special team of Ambassadors and a Board of Directors that make sure the Chamber is the best and most efficient it can be.

Mark shared some insights with us into why the Southlake Chamber has been so successful over its many years. “We offer valuable resources to our members, such as business training, networking events, and promotional opportunities. By providing these resources, we help businesses grow and thrive. The Chamber is an advocate for the interests of our members and the local business community. This

could involve promoting economic development or speaking out on behalf of businesses facing challenges.”

The team also believes a big reason behind its prosperity is its leadership, just like any other organization. They have effective and visionary leaders who can guide the organization and inspire its members. Additionally, the Chamber is actively involved in the local community, working to build relationships, promote local businesses, and improve the quality of life for residents. “By being a positive force in the community, the Chamber helps build a strong and vibrant local economy,” adds Mark.

the opening of a new chapter in a business’s history. It’s a visual representation of progress, growth, and change. They are also often attended by members of the local community, providing an opportunity for businesses to connect with their neighbors and build relationships. Businesses can demonstrate their commitment to the area and build goodwill,” adds Mark.

The Chamber advocates for member businesses to support each other, boosting their success. They do this by encouraging their members to refer other businesses’ products or services to their own clients or customers. This helps promote a sense of community

and mutual support and can also help members generate new business. “We also organize joint marketing initiatives that promote multiple member businesses at once. This can help increase exposure and generate business for all members involved. Additionally, the Southlake Chamber encourages member businesses to get involved in community events and initiatives. By working together on community projects, businesses can build relationships, promote their brand, and contribute to the overall well-being of the community,” says Mark.

We asked the team what they thought made the Southlake Chamber unique,

and they undoubtedly agreed that it must be their annual three-day, German-themed festival, Oktoberfest Southlake. “The event gives Chamber members a chance to market to huge crowds and meet people they otherwise might not come in contact with. As the largest tourism event in Southlake, it helps to grow the local economy.”

I think all locals can agree that Southlake would not be what it is without our Chamber of Commerce. We couldn’t be more grateful for the amazing work they do for all the businesses we love.

If you have spent a summer in Southlake, you know that it becomes a ghost town. Well, not quite… but folks here love to get their travel on and enjoy time together with family in their favorite vacation spots as well as visit family and friends. Where does everyone go?

One of the benefits of living in a big state like Texas is that you don’t have to leave it to feel like you are on vacation and getting away. From camping to urban adventures, Texas has something to offer everyone. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

AUSTIN

Texas’s capital city is one of Lone Star State’s top vacation destinations. It’s great for outdoor enthusiasts, music

lovers, and foodies. It’s also been named the Live Music Capital of the World! While you’re there don’t miss renting paddleboards or kayaks on Lady Bird Lake, watching the bats fly from under the Congress Bridge, hiking the Greenbelt, shopping on SOCO (South Congress Avenue), or bar-hopping on 6th Street.

HORSESHOE BAY RESORT

Just down the road from Austin, you’ll find this gem located in Texas

Hill Country on the shores of Lake LBJ. Horseshoe Bay Resort’s upscale destination inspires you to unwind in modern rooms, suites, or villas with amazing views of the lake.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND

It’s a hot spot and not just because of the abundance of sun. South Padre Island is a favorite for those looking to observe wildlife. Some come here to scope out the rowdy bar scene while others can’t take their eyes off the silky smooth dolphins dotting the surf and majestic sea turtles scuttling in the sand. You’ll find South Padre located just off the southern tip of Texas.

Of course, there are many, many more - San Antonio, Galveston, Big Bend National Park, Corpus Christi, Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, Marfa, and Waco, to name a few more. But, if you’re ready to shed your cowboy boots for a spell, here are a few hot spots that are popular with Southlake residents:

30-A

Destin used to be the go-to beach, but now the towns peppered along 30-A have become the top summer scene, from a few of the quieter ones (Grayton, Blue Mountain, and Alys Beach) to the more popular and busier Seaside and Watercolor areas. You’ll have your choice of beautiful beaches, homes with views, an incredible restaurant scene, lots of shopping, and endless activities for the little ones.

MEXICO

This is an easy one for us Texans! Mexico is an easy flight away and typically not an expensive one. Whether it be Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum - the best beaches in Mexico are not only some of the most beautiful in the world, but they also offer an impressive variety. There’s truly something for everyone! Whether you’re looking for the ultimate escape with white sand and crystalline water, an adrenaline-pumping surf spot, a golden-hued coastline with more sea turtles than people, or a barefoot party destination, Mexico has a beach to match your mood.

It’s important to note that Mexico is generally safe for American tourists if you take proper precautions, research the city you are traveling to, and use common sense. You should always maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations. The U.S. advises Americans not to travel to six of Mexico’s 32 states: Guerrero, Colima, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas.

COSTA RICA

A trip to Costa Rica offers unique adventures from ziplining through the jungle or a river canyon and rappelling waterfalls to hiking a volcano. You can seek out the Guanacaste beaches from the Papagayo Peninsula to Playa Flamingo, or opt for a more rainforest and adrenaline-filled visit to Arenal. Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio are popular as well and don’t miss out on the historic capital city of San Jose.

EUROPE

There are so many fabulous countries to choose from!

Thanks to its location “in the heart of Europe”, Prague is an excellent starting point for trips to Austria, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary. Cities like Vienna, Salzburg, or Berlin are surprisingly quick to get to, and even Budapest or Kraków are within a six to seven-hour train trip away. There

are some great spots in Northern Ireland, with Belfast at the top of the list. The Republic of Ireland (what we call Ireland) has many top-travel destinations including Dublin, Galway, Cork, Dingle Peninsula, Killarney, Kilkenny, and the list goes on.

Italy - what’s not to love? The hard part is deciding which cities to visit! Central Italy has Rome with all of its history and the Vatican City, as well as Florence, the Umbria region, and Tuscany. Northern Italy hot spots include Milan, Venice, Cinque Terre, Parma, Lake Como, and Lake Garda. Southern Italy boasts the beautiful cities of Sorrento, Capri, Naples, Pompeii, and Amalfi Coast.

If travel just isn’t in the cards for you this summer, it is a great time to hit all of your favorite restaurants here in town without the long waits! There are so many great options to enjoy all types of cuisine - Mexican, Mediterranean, Thai, Italian, local fare and more.

With the Fit City Challenge underway, we got in touch with Vicky Schiber from Experience Southlake to learn more about the challenge and how to ensure we’re the winning city this year!

GIVE US A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE FIT CITY CHALLENGE

The Fit City Challenge is a competition between the cities of Southlake, Keller and Colleyville to claim the title of the Most Fit City 2023. Over six weeks, participants are encouraged to be physically active, focus on their well-being, and work with their fellow team members to be at the top of the leaderboard. The team with the most average points will win. Participants

must download the GoJoe app, create a profile, and enter a team code to join the team of their choice.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND STARTING THIS CHALLENGE?

This is the second year of the Fit City Challenge. Last year, Mayor Huffman of Southlake and Mayor Mizani of Keller decided to challenge each other and their respective cities to see who was the “Most Fit”. The teams from

Southlake and Keller then worked together to put a fun and engaging challenge together and the rest is history!

HOW CAN RESIDENTS ‘CLOCK’ THEIR EXERCISE AND TRACK THE CHALLENGE AS A WHOLE?

Once registered, they can track their activity to earn points. They can either sync a wearable device or manually enter their activity. Each activity

40 | WWW.SOUTHLAKEBLVDMAGAZINE.COM

generates points, weighted by activity type to level the playing field. (We have some tutorial videos on our website that walk you through how to enter your points: www.experiencesouthlaketexas. com/681/Fit-City-Challenge)

TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE CAMARADERIE THAT COMES WITH THE CHALLENGE

The camaraderie is great. Unfortunately, Southlake came close but ultimately did not win last year. That has really driven the competition this year. Time and time again we keep hearing, Southlake is going to bring the title home this year. The challenge has also served as a great way for each community to show its community pride. It’s been really special for us to see so many people talking about it and encouraging each other along the way.

WHAT ARE SOME LOCAL GYMS/ PARKS/SPOTS YOU SUGGEST RESIDENTS VISIT?

All of our parks are wonderful places to visit! We have some popular parks, such as Bicentennial Park and Bob Jones Park, and some fantastic hidden gems, like Royal and Annie Smith Park and Liberty Park at Sheltonwood. All of our parks

have great walking trails, so they’re an easy place to earn some points.

Of course, people should also check out Champions Club! We have something for everyone there. Whether you prefer a solo weightlifting session, a fun group fitness class, or want to test your pickleball skills, you can do that at Champions Club. There are also so many great fitness facilities all over the city that give participants options to increase their points.

WHAT WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT DO YOU HAVE FOR TEAM SOUTHLAKE SO WE CAN WIN THIS YEAR’S CHALLENGE?

The most important thing for Team Southlake to remember is to stay active. It’s not the team with the most participants that will win the challenge, it’s the team with the most average points, so staying active is super important. Team Southlake is doing fantastic! We’ve been at the top of the leaderboard since the start of the challenge and the team is proving we have what it takes to stay there. We’re proud of you, Team Southlake. Keep up the great work!

FROM OUR MAYOR JOHN HUFFMAN

How important is it as a “team of Mayors” to not only always focus on politics or local issues and what benefit does the challenge bring to Southlake locals?

“It is so important that regional Mayors work together and have great relationships. Mayor Mizani in Keller and Mayor Lindamood in Colleyville have become good friends, and I know these gentlemen to be devoted public servants. The more we can collaborate together, the better our solutions will be for our citizens and for our region. This challenge benefits our community by encouraging fitness and wellness through competition and building community bonds. Everyone loves a good contest, especially when city pride is on the line!”

Senior year of high school is such a stressful time. College applications, recommendations, essays, SATs/ACTs, and more. It’s a lot! Yet, there are a handful of kids from Southlake who decided to take it to a different level and not only apply to colleges and universities but also to military service academies.

Students need an application and interview to earn a nomination from a Congressman, Senator, Vice President, or President (or a blue chip if you’re a recruited athlete) before their application is even considered by the respective academy. They also have to pass a physical assessment and medical examination, as well as interviews with an Air Force Academy Liaison or Naval Academy Blue and Gold Officer if you’re considering one of these two academies. The military service academies are fond of students who have pursued leadership positions and have shown a commitment to their communities. Also, they appreciate students who have excelled athletically and have obtained awards and leadership positions on their sports teams.

You might wonder how difficult it is to get into a service academy. The academies - the United States Military Academy (USMA), the United States Naval Academy (USNA), the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), and the United States Coast Guard Academy - are very selective.

With acceptance rates so low, our small town of Southlake boasts quite a large

number of accepted students. From the 2021 class, we currently have one student at USNA, three at USAFA, and two at USMA. It’s almost unheard of to have this many students in a year from a town Southlake’s size attending the academies.

“Last year being my first at Carroll Sr. High School, I was blown away by three seniors securing appointments to the Air Force Academy, an elusive opportunity for sure,” says Mr Wilson, Principal at CSHS. “The class of 2022 also saw a soccer phenom sign on with West Point, which was over-thetop impressive for a single graduating class. Any thought that this stat was terrifically unique faded by March of 2023 when the class of 2023 secured its fourth student appointment to an academy, three to West Point, and one to the Naval Academy. Like any productive partnership, these instrumental institutions have come to appreciate what graduates of Carroll ISD can offer their school and this country.”

There are a number of good reasons why someone would choose this path over regular college. Following their four-year college, they are required to make a commitment of at least five

years of service. This seems to be a sticking point for some, but the truth of the matter is that every student needs to get a job when they graduate - the academy graduates just don’t have to look for theirs!

I asked several of our local academy Cadets (USAFA/USMA) and Midshipmen (USNA) why they chose to attend their respective schools and what their experiences have been so far. I think you’ll see that these folks are “cut from a different cloth”.

REGI CAPATI, a Third Class Cadet (sophomore) at USAFA, is a biology major and Spanish minor whose goal is to go to medical school after graduation. He’s also interested in a career in special investigations or becoming a pilot. “I initially chose to come to the Academy because of a close mentor. They had graduated from the Academy and thought that I would do well there. After doing some research on other schools, I realized I wanted to do something challenging with my life and contribute to something bigger than myself.”

The best experience Regi has had so far is the jump program. “Jumping out

42 | WWW.SOUTHLAKEBLVDMAGAZINE.COM

of a plane by yourself is a very thrilling experience, and it was great to test my nerves by doing something I have never done before. I was also able to fly gliders (non-engine aircraft) as a part of another airmanship program.”

Regi is a member of the Cadet First Responder Team (CFRT) and recently joined the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) team, which is a team dedicated to biology research and presentation. He also served as a leader in his squadron last semester and helped organize this year’s National Character and Leadership Symposium. He has been on the Dean’s and Commandant’s honors lists since he has been at the Academy. Lastly, he’s about to begin training for his skydiving license.

TYLER CASEY is a Third Class/Youngster (sophomore) Midshipman at USNA, majoring in Quantitative Econometrics. “I chose to attend the Naval Academy because I wanted to continue to be challenged. I knew the Academy would open doors for me that other universities couldn’t. Although I am the first in my family to attend a service academy, I

WWW.SOUTHLAKEBLVDMAGAZINE.COM | 43
REGI CAPATI TYLER CASEY

was influenced greatly by my dad and two grandfathers who had all spent time in the military.”

Tyler spent part of the last summer in San Diego at what is known as PROTRAMID (Professional Training for Midshipmen), which is a fourweek training session to expose midshipmen to missions, capabilities and personnel in the fleet. “This by far was the coolest thing I’ve experienced. I took my first flight with a Top Gun instructor and boarded a boomer submarine hours off the coast, where we spent the night. The week at Camp Pendleton with the Marines was impressive.”

This summer, Tyler will take a submarine cruise and train incoming midshipmen on weapons during Plebe Summer. In addition to being a Navy swim team manager, he has also worked as a PAO (Public Affairs Officer) for his company, integrating his love for photography with the many activities and sports on the “Yard” (what they call their campus). “I was recently selected as Midshipman of the Month in my Battalion which was a real honor.” Tyler hopes to become a pilot upon commissioning.

NICK LANGENBERG is a Third Class Cadet (sophomore) at USAFA, majoring in aeronautical engineering. He decided to attend the Air Force Academy for several reasons. “I wanted to be a part of something greater than myself by continuing my family’s tradition and legacy of service to our country. I knew that the Academy would be the best place for me to develop the ability to think clearly under stress, act morally, manage significant responsibility, and effectively lead others. There are countless opportunities that you will not be able to experience anywhere else. The major difference from regular college is that you will walk across the stage on graduation with no college debt and a guaranteed job.” Nick hopes to be a fighter pilot upon commissioning.

NICK LANGENBERG

“One of the reasons I’m studying ‘aero’ is because I want to better understand how an aircraft flies, hoping it will make me a better pilot. I’m very grateful for all of the amazing opportunities and experiences I’ve had so far. I would say skydiving solo five times and soloing a TG-16 Glider are my top two experiences. There is nowhere else in the world but the Air Force Academy where you can skydive and see a glider and also fly a glider and see a skydiver!”

ABIGAIL MCILVAIN, a “yearling” (sophomore) at West Point, decided to go to an academy over a regular college because she saw it as a challenge that would take her well out of her comfort zone. “I felt like I would get the most out of this experience because it would push me to do things that I would normally avoid. I’m majoring in Organizational Psychology and plan on becoming a branching Quartermaster or Adjutant General upon commissioning.” Abigail was a recruited athlete to West Point and competes in both cross country (6k) and the 5k/10k in track.

Abigail’s favorite time at West Point was Cadet Field Training last summer. “We got to apply knowledge from plebe year in a field environment. Even though it was very exhausting, I had some good laughs and made my closest friends yet.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The great teacher is not the man who supplies the most facts, but the one in whose presence we become different people.” Dr. Karen Otto, Carroll High School’s 10th Grade English II GT (Gifted and Talented) teacher, is one of these great teachers.

WORDS JENNIFER CASEY

Dr. Karen Otto arrived in Southlake 16 years ago. She began her 25-year career in education teaching sixth grade GT English. Since then, she has taught middle and high school GT in schools of varying socioeconomic diversity.

Dr. Otto recently earned her Ph.D. in composition and rhetoric, making her one of just a few teachers in Southlake with a Ph.D.! She also has a MA in English, a Masters in Education as well as her Bachelor of Arts. As a past GT student herself, Karen knows all about the blessings and curses of being a GT learner. In 2018, she won the TAGT (Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented) Educator of the Year Award, and in 2019, the Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (TCTELA) High Teacher of the Year Award.

Dr. Otto also offers summer writing camps. “This is the 11th year I’ve taught these camps. I focus on different types of writing and how to transfer these skills to different situations, not just passing a test or satisfying a teacher. My Ph.D. work focused on just that: teaching kids how to overall become confident and skilled writers.” She does the Boot Camp for incoming freshmen and Writing Workshop for sophomores to seniors. For more information on her camps, you can email Dr. Otto at mrs.karenotto@gmail.com

For anyone whose child has been lucky enough to have Dr. Otto as a teacher, you “get” that she’s a unicorn. She has a way of treating her students like adults (they are fully accountable for the good and the bad), having fun, and being silly with them, all the while teaching them without them really feeling like they are being taught.

She has two life-size cutouts of Johnny Depp front and center in the room (everyone knows she adores him) and a B.S. button on her desk. She uses it during open discussions, and when it’s obvious that a student hasn’t read the book, the button gets buzzed.

So, how does she best strike a balance between hard-structured teaching and teaching with humor and fun (because she’s obviously got this figured out based on the cult following she has with her kids)? “I probably fall over that line sometimes. I’m a believer of real talk, and I’m transparent about everything.” Her favorite part of teaching is 100% the kids. “Every time I’ve thought about leaving for another opportunity, I stay for them. They are my why.”

I inquired about what made her different from other teachers, and she very humbly replied, “I don’t know. I try to stay true to who I am and always teach the way I’d like to be taught to. After I complete a lesson plan, I try to place myself in the student’s shoes and ask myself if I’d like the lesson.”

SOME OF DR. OTTO’S STUDENTS HAVE SOME AMAZING THINGS TO SHARE ABOUT HER:

Current student Sanjana Senthil shared this: “Being in Dr. Otto’s English class this year has taught me that English is entirely shaped by the teacher. Dr. Otto has molded her class into a fun, creative, and collaborative environment. We are treated like adults regarding deadlines and grades, but then we discuss poetry and literature like we are amongst friends. As GT students, we are pushed to excel and earn the “gifted and talented” title with creative assignments (all masterminded by Dr. Otto). We are given the freedom to choose our own books and explore ourselves alongside literature. We analyze, discuss, create, and learn with Dr. Otto as our leader. It’s refreshing, much like Dr. Otto herself. She values honesty, hard work, and out-of-the-box thinking. By constantly holding up these standards with her work every day, we as students are held to a higher standard as well. However, if you were to ask any of her students off the cuff what their favorite thing about Dr. Otto is, you’d get responses about her humor, candid conversations, intelligence, helpfulness, and, of course, her

unabashed Johnny Depp fangirling. More than anything, Dr. Otto casually walks the tough line between friend and teacher, all by being herself. Dr. Otto makes you feel lucky to learn in her classroom.”

Another student, Kate Fancher, wrote this: “Dr. Otto is my favorite teacher because she is brilliant, and she actually cares about what she does. I’ve learned skills in her class that I know I will need in the future. All of her assignments are entertaining, so they don’t actually feel like work. Everything she does is from the heart, and it shows.”

Maya Angelou coined the phrase: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I’m confident that this is fitting for her students. Thanks for all that you do for your students and parents!

SOME PARENTS SHARED THEIR PRAISE OF DR. OTTO:

“You are still one of the major highlights of my kids’ school careers. You are a unicorn in the education system. You are loved and well-respected.

I hope you have a wonderful year, Dr. Otto! The Keadys love you!” - Courtney Keady

“I hope you have a wonderful school year - you are definitely one of the best out there! Thanks for being such an impactful teacher for my kid!”

HIGHLIGHTING

OUR FABULOUS SROS

Officer Kenneth Richardson

WORDS JENNIFER CASEY

A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a resource for Carroll High School faculty and staff in crime prevention and the development of security measures to make campuses safer. Meet our profiled Officer, Kenneth Richardson, from Carroll High School.

CAN YOU SHARE THE PATH THAT LED YOU TO BECOME AN SRO?

After assignments in Patrol, Planning, Research, and Narcotics, a fellow officer encouraged me to apply for the School Resource Officer position. Twenty-seven years later, I still look forward to building positive relationships with students, parents, teachers, school administration, and the citizens of the community.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING AN SRO?

Building trust with students through positive interactions, being a guiding

light for them during difficult or troubling times through mentoring, and witnessing a student learn to positively navigate a difficult situation, confiding in me for advice, and making the right choice to overcome the difficulties young teens are faced with in today’s society.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE STORY YOU CAN SHARE?

At work, I had a troubled youth who was involved in drugs and had discipline issues at school. Even though I arrested him for narcotics, I never gave up mentoring him. Some students take more than one or two talks to convince them that life choices can make a positive or negative turn, impacting their lives forever. This young man, through mentoring, was able to make positive changes that led him on the right path. Several years later, he came back and thanked me for helping him turn his life around.

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON OR FUNNY QUESTION ASKED BY A STUDENT?

I have worked with students throughout the years at the elementary to high school levels. I get questions from, “Are you a real cop?” to “Do you eat a lot of donuts?” I would often laugh and just answer, “Does it look like I eat donuts?”

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO MENTION/ADD?

In my opinion, the School Resource Officer has been the best and most rewarding assignment within the police department. We have the ability to make a positive impact on our youth and change lives and false perceptions of police officers. Our students are the future of this nation. An SRO can help mold the future of the next generation.

CLEAN EATING FOR YOUR KIDS

Eating a healthy, clean diet is extremely important. As a mother of eight children ranging in age from 30 years old down to nine-year-old twins, I understand the importance of good nutrition for kids of all ages.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our kids is the power of health. I’ve noticed that so many parents these days are battling with kids who have numerous allergies and food ailments. Because I have so many children, I get asked often: What do you feed your kids?

The most important advice I can give people is to start including ‘clean’ food in their children’s diets - not only just foods that are healthy. By this, I mean foods that are free from pesticides and genetically modified ingredients. This matters! Sometimes we think that our kids may have allergies to a certain type of food, but most of the time we forget to look at the chemicals sprayed on foods or added colors and flavors that may be causing the reactions. These are the real culprits!

It is important to choose foods that are truly clean of these additions. If you do, you may start to notice a difference in your kids’ reactions.

One of my favorite places to shop for food is Trader Joe’s. All of their products have comprehensive labels and everything they carry is free of GMOs. There are so many options out there!

HERE ARE A FEW INGREDIENTS YOU SHOULD AVOID:

• Bioengineered ingredients - better known as GMOs. These are very commonly found in foods these days. Companies now have to put them on labels (or even on the outside of boxes). They often show up in very small print.

• High fructose corn syrup

• MSG

• Artificial food coloring and flavors

• Sodium benzoate

• Carrageenan

Next time you get your groceries, take an extra five minutes at the store and really read the labels. If you make this a monthly habit, and then turn it into a weekly habit, it will eventually become a daily habit.

You and your family will truly be eating ‘clean’ once you change your household grocery list. You will soon start to see the amazing benefits!
