NEW NAME; SAME INCREDIBLE FOREST ADVENTURE
Monkeyland-KZN, the largest free-roaming primate sanctuary in Africa, opened to the public in 2019. Since then, over 25,000 people have been on a truly unique adventure by joining one of their walking tours through their “hidden forest”. The sanctuary is currently rebranding and now has a new name which more accurately reflects the experience – The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary.
Whilst the sanctuary’s main work is the rehabilitation of captive-raised lemurs, exotic monkeys (such as capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys and spider monkeys) and gibbons, a walk through the stunning 23-hectare indigenous forest is so much more than that. The forest is full of breathtaking flora and fauna – trees that are used in traditional Zulu medicine, bush buck, red and blue duiker, banded mongoose and the most incredible birdlife, including rare species such as the norina trogan and african broadbill.
Your adventure starts with a short drive on an open-top vehicle to the hidden forest. You’ll explore this stunning 23-hectare indigenous forest on a guided walking tour, a truly unique and unforgettable experience. You might see ring-tailed lemurs soaking up the sun or capuchins and squirrel monkeys foraging for insects, maybe you’ll even hear the call of the black howler monkey; the loudest land mammal in the world.
The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary is a true sanctuary and, therefore, has a strict no touching policy; this ensures that the animals in their care don’t feel threatened by the presence of visitors and don’t have to perform for them either – a truly safe place for these animals to live as natural a life as possible. Here you’ll have a unique opportunity to see the primates behaving as they would in the wild, marking their territories, forming social bonds and foraging. The sanctuary reception site on the Glendale Road has a large, secure parking lot, gift shop, toilet facilities, prayer room, children’s jungle gym and licensed pizza restaurant.
Located just 16kms from exit 222 of the N2, The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary is a must-do outing whether you’re looking for a day out for friends and family or the perfect balance of fun and education for your school group.
