Jono, Mandy and Jayden Rootman make up a dynamic family affectionately known as “The Rootmans”. Mandy is originally from Joburg while Jono is KZN born and bred. The happy couple met in Joburg and made the move to

Ballito in October 2016, so it is their “Ballitoversary” this month!

Jono works in the hospitality industry. He started out owning his own restaurants and then ventured into opening

restaurants and fast-food outlets for major brands. He is the KZN agent for The Flavour Lab, a manufacturer specialising in flavour solutions tailored for the hospitality sector. Jono is also a chef and food is his love language, so his family

and friends are always spoilt with divine meals.

“Jono’s strength and drive to survive at all costs after being through eight major surgeries over a six-year cancer journey has not only inspired me but all those who know him. He teaches us to be the best version of ourselves and use every living moment to make a difference and pass it forward in some way or another,” Mandy says.

Mandy is a highly experienced marketer and communications expert with 29 years in the field. She is the owner of Maraschino Marketing Collective, a widely recognised marketing agency known for its creativity and communityoriented approach.

Jayden, Jono’s 14-year-old son, is an avid sportsman and excels in hockey. Mandy loves being "Mom 2" to Jayden.

The Rootmans moved into Seaward Estates in 2018. After a hot February, they decided they needed a house with a pool, and one miraculously became available across the road! Jono and Mandy love entertaining, especially in summer. You can often find

them around the pool with family and friends, having a braai, watching sports, or listening to music.

Their home is often filled with extended family visiting them. Four years ago, Jono and Mandy’s daughter, Tayla, and son-in-law moved to Ballito and have since blessed them with two gorgeous grandsons, Grayson (three years old) and Rylee (six months old). They now live in Seaward Estates as well!

The whole family loves that Seaward offers so much to families with the parks and kid-friendly environments. One of the main reasons they chose the Estate was its location and easy access to everything in Ballito with its two entry points. As the Rootmans had dogs at the time of moving in, the fact that pets were allowed was a rare find. They also love that Seaward provides that feeling of being in nature with little or no noise coming from the buzzing surrounding areas.

With the weather getting warmer, it’s time to go outside again and enjoy the sunshine. Just off Seaward Drive is the San Tarena Park. Filled with fun features, the park is a great place to get the family together and enjoy the outdoors.

To start off, San Tarena Park is very doggy-friendly. Take your furry family out for a walk around the park to get those legs working. Remember to pick up any waste your dog may leave behind and deposit it into the dedicated waste station.

The green grass is great for having a picnic, so grab your snacks, sandwiches, blankets and children from in front of the TV and set up the perfect lunch out in the fresh air. The trees also provide some lovely shade and a breeze. It’s still spring so you can enjoy the beautiful flowers too!

We just passed Heritage Day and we could smell the braais all over the Estate. If you’re looking for something a little more substantial than a picnic, there is a braai area equipped

with a stand, tables and benches to have a fun family braai. As is always the case with food, be aware of the animals in the area and keep your food safe.

Seaward has walking trails winding around and through the Estate which actually lead to San Tarena Park. If you want to get in your daily walk, be amongst nature, and take a break at the park, these trails are the best way to do it! There are benches spread around the area so you can relax and take in the beautiful scenery.

If you’re feeling like being slightly more active and competitive, there are sports facilities to have good old fun passing a ball around. There is a volleyball court and a goalpost should you want to practise those goalscoring skills.

What’s a visit to the park without bouncing around a bit? Let your kids play freely on a jungle gym, two sets of swings and a trampoline. Imagination comes into play here too! From hide and seek to pretend games, the area is versatile enough to accommodate all kinds of games. Jump about and try out new tricks on the trampoline - safely of course! Or, swing gently with the breeze on the swing sets.

If you look hard enough, there’s a lot to do! Let the inspiration of nature guide your activities. This spring, try to get out more and breathe some fresh air.
