As always, we start with a positive message from the Estate Manager, Johann, and then we get to know the "Van Linger" family. Meet Brett, Vicky, Kylie, Keano and Callum, as well as their fur babies Ted and Egor. This fun-loving family adores living in Seaward and absolutely loves the little piece of paradise they have found in the Estate (we get it, wink wink). Encounter Church also shares heartfelt feedback from the thankful workers at an orphanage that recently received donated gifts and winter clothing from members of the church.

How about some holiday DIY? This is the perfect activity to keep your kids busy at home. Follow these instructions to make cute paper roll windmills! And if DIY goodies aren't enough, check out our directory of local activities the whole family can enjoy over July. Don't forget The Ballito Pro is on NOW and is a really fabulous way to get the kids outside and enjoy the Ballito weather. Make sure you enjoy the entertainment the town puts on during this time. We may not have the crazy winter weather that other parts of the country or world experience, but still, as the temperatures cool slightly, enjoy the body's natural sense of wanting to hibernate, read a book, cosy up under a blanket (leave a door or window open if you need to to do this), have lazy afternoons, eat foods that nourish your body with warmth, and enjoy fabulous meals made from seasonal ingredients.

Serves 4 to 6

INGREDIENTS

• 15ml (1 tbsp) oil

• 1/2 onion, chopped

• 1 carrot, diced

• 2 celery sticks, chopped

• 2 sprigs thyme

• 3 sprigs parsley

• 1 nub of ginger, thinly sliced

• 1 clove garlic, chopped

• 1 bay leaf

• 1/2 star anise (optional)

• Black pepper, to taste

• Pinch of turmeric

• 4 pieces of chicken (leftover chicken works well in this recipe)

• 1 litre (4 cups) chicken stock

METHOD

This is the go-to winter soup when the cold weather starts to set in and the chill creeps through anything and everything... One bowl of this hearty, delicious soup will turn the grey of winter into a summery warmth that reaches every part of your body. 1.

1. Heat the oil in a pot on medium heat. Add the onion, carrot, celery, thyme, parsley, ginger, garlic, bay leaf and star anise (if using) and fry for about five to eight minutes. Season with black pepper.

2. Add the turmeric and stir. Add the chicken pieces and a little water. Add the chicken stock and leave it to simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes.

3. Remove the chicken pieces from the pot and shred the meat off the bone. Remove the thyme, parsley and star anise from the pot as well. Return the shredded chicken to the pot and season to taste. Serve with naan rolls or bread.

Kiddies on holiday? Weather isn't so great? We’ve got you covered! This July, there are many events in Ballito and beyond that will be loads of fun for adults and kids alike. Here are a few that we think are definitely worth the visit.

The Ballito Pro, presented by O’Neill, is back again this year. From 27 June to 9 July, head

down to Willard Beach to catch the thrilling juniors, men’s and women’s surfing, surf tag team, and para surfing events.

Along with skateboarding contests and Monster Bike demos, there will be attractions such as a food court, cider garden and retail stalls. For the kids, they offer arts and crafts, face painting, sand castle building, and other fun activities. Their popular

beach concerts will also take place on 6 and 7 July at Salt Rock Main Beach.

A short drive out of town, East Coast Radio House + Garden Show awaits with the stunning Home Grown Design Fair, a culinary extravaganza at The Hirsch’s Kitchen, their Property Pavilion, and so much more! The event will take place at the Durban Exhibition Centre from 1 to 9 July.
