s I looked through this edition, the article that stood out to me was the one about orchids, which is weird for me, but orchids have been a topic of a few conversations lately. Do you have an orchid at home that doesn’t want to thrive? Here are some tips to keep them looking great all year round. I wish I had this advice two years ago (before I gave up and let the orchids go). I spent two years ice blocking and moving them to the different spots within the house that are ideal for orchids. But alas! I never got flowers. I am sad I did not know to just put them on a tree as I have many of those! So, hopefully, this article will inspire and help someone out there to see those flowers again!

People, we have two months left of the year! 2, two, twee, kubili... that's crazy! So, without wasting any more "time", let’s get back to this edition and the good things inside it. The Pearsons share more about their family and how they ended up in Seaward. Also, spring isn’t over just yet, so we include a spring-themed compound word crossword puzzle to keep the kids busy.

Since time is flying by, and nights are full, these air fryer chicken dishes are easy, tasty and cooked quickly! It's a win-win situation. We also share a few lovely photos taken by residents recently in our “Seaward Snippets” The hardest part of any race is always towards the finish line, and that is exactly how many feel towards the end of every year. Be mindful of year-end fatigue, try not to feel overwhelmed and focus on all the positives of the end of year: the break and time with friends and family. ‘Til December, keep well.

ur family is made up of my wife Allison, our teenage boys, Ethan (15 years old) and William (18 years old), and myself (Ian). I met Allison (through her cousin who was a friend of mine) at Midmar

drive to Granny Mouse and Allison caught a ride with me in my smart, new bakkie, which I thought was a real deal maker. However, it didn't have an aircon and, at that time, I didn't know she hated the heat and didn't think much of my bakkie…

Allison and I both share a love of our country and the outdoors, and our middle ground is walking together in the Berg or anywhere we may find ourselves on a road trip. We enjoy Kruger National Park, Berg trips and annual road trips to the Eastern Cape. My boys also share our love of the country and outdoors. We have done a lot of hiking and surf trips over the years. My younger son, Ethan, is a good sportsman, playing tennis, cricket and rugby. He has recently gotten into golf and also enjoys a bit of surfing as well. Our older son, William, is into surfing and fly fishing which he learnt from a friend. He has recently learnt to brew craft beer which I have fully supported and helped with a lot of tasting! I have a painting contracting business, Pearson Painting,

which was established in 1997, working mostly on the North Coast. I also have a sideline software business, QuotePro, which is a software system for tradesmen. My wife, Allison, is a qualified primary school teacher with 10 years of experience and now tutors privately. We have been at Seaward Estate for a year and a half and love the proximity to the beach and Lifestyle Eat Street and Market. Popping

up on the scooter to get a meal or Scoop Ice Cream is a fun date night. We also love having a walk in the forest which is pristine and cool in summer. We have a lovely outdoor area and enjoy entertaining with our newly built pizza oven and fire pit. Seaward Estate | 7

The Beauty of

Tips to Help Them Thrive

n age-old saying suggests that gifting an orchid signifies more than mere attraction - it conveys profound love and enduring commitment. Whether this statement holds true or not, almost everyone has been gifted an orchid, and, most possibly, they don’t know how

to care for it. Well, Hennie, a dedicated orchid lover and owner of Inhle Orchids, shares some knowledge to empower anyone to confidently care for these botanical treasures.

plants takes the art of patience. Growers nurture seeds for years in sterilised flasks before the splendid blossoms emerge, some taking up to 15 years to bloom.

Boasting over 35 000 identified species, orchids claim the title of Earth's largest plant group. To cultivate these beautiful

So, if you have an orchid decorating your home or garden, Hennie shares his tips to keep them thriving:

environment

Know Your Plant Familiarise yourself with the specific type of orchid you possess. Each species harbours distinct requirements. For example, the common Phalaenopsis (also known as “moth orchids”), an orchid that you can find at almost all supermarkets, have a few key requirements that can differ from other orchid species, such as they need to be kept in a space with normal room temperature and indirect light and benefit from light fertilisation. Ideal Growing Medium Orchids exhibit preferences

when it comes to their growing medium. While some thrive in a blend of coconut fibre and polystyrene, others flourish in sphagnum moss, which maintains humidity and moisture. Vitality of Water Orchids thrive with proper watering, striking a delicate balance between hydration and drought avoidance. You should water your orchid once or twice a week, depending on how warm or dry the weather is and the type of orchid you have. If the moth orchid is kept too wet, the roots are likely to rot, but if kept too dry, the roots may shrivel and die. Seaward Estate | 9

bout 36 million falls are reported among older adults each year resulting in more than 32 000 deaths. Each year, about three million older adults are treated in emergency departments for a fall injury. One out of every five falls cause an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury (National Institute of Health). According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a fall is defined as an event which results in a person coming to rest inadvertently on the ground, floor or other lower level. Fallrelated injuries may be fatal. While all people who fall are at risk of injury, the age, gender and health of the individual can affect the type and severity of injury. Other risk factors include: • occupations at elevated heights or other hazardous working conditions, • alcohol or substance use, • socioeconomic factors including poverty, overcrowded housing, sole parenthood and young maternal age,

underlying medical conditions, such as neurological, cardiac or other disabling conditions, side effects of medication, physical inactivity and loss of balance, particularly among older people, poor mobility, cognition and vision, particularly among those living in an institution, such as a nursing home or chronic care facility, and unsafe environments, particularly for those with poor balance and limited vision.

A range of interventions exist to prevent falls: • gait, balance and functional training, • tai chi, • home assessments and modifications, • reduction or withdrawal of psychotropic drugs, • multifactorial interventions (individual fall-risk assessments followed by tailored interventions and referrals to address identified risks), and • vitamin D supplements for those who are vitamin D deficient.

At Clinicare Centre, we can review your balance and gait and provide a home exercise programme including balance and strength exercises as well as backward chaining techniques. We can also review your home environment to find potential trip hazards, discuss equipment needs to aid with independent and safer functioning, install rails, and educate you on adaptive techniques to complete ADL (Activities of Daily Life) tasks to reduce potential falls. Clinicare Centre is running a balance and exercise class starting in November. Make sure you contact the centre for more info. 032 946 1579/1826 Clinicare Medical Centre, 27 Jacqueline Drive, Ballito
