What’s Happening @ Dunkirk

Dear all,

Welcome to 2024! All the best for those starting new schools, new ventures and in new homes, as well as to everyone not making big changes. We have hit the ground running this year, and there is a lot happening in and around

the Estate. We had a very busy and successful holiday season, which Utopia ran smoothly and professionally. Although the Estate was extremely busy, there were very few problems and their stats and post-season report were incredibly interesting. Please remember that if you are looking to short-term let

your home for the March/April holiday season, you must register with the HOA and Utopia. Please familiarise yourself with the Short Term Letting Rules to avoid any problems. The office is always happy to assist you, should you have any questions or uncertainty.

With all the rain that we had in December, causing contractors to run behind, and then the builders’ holiday, there were a lot of projects that we ran out of time to start at the end of last year. So here’s a quick update:

• The speedbumps that everyone

has been requesting have been installed. After a few teething problems with the one at the main entrance which needed adjusting, they now seem to be working well. This a reminder that our speed limit is 25 kilometres per hour to keep our free-range children and wildlife safe. Please try to avoid using your phones while driving in the Estate.

• In addition to the above, the cameras have been ordered and we will be introducing speed enforcement

in the next month or so. The HOA will be sending out a number of communications in the next few weeks leading up to this, so please be sure to read them so that you are not caught unawares. There will be penalties imposed for speeding, and you will be responsible for those issued against your visitors and contractors.

• The relocation of the two sections of our fences to fully include two areas of Dunkirk property that currently sit

outside of our perimeter fence (as discussed at the AGM) will begin in the next couple of weeks. Whilst a lot of this area is forested and marshy, and so is not utilisable for buildings, etc., it is very beautiful and will increase our wildlife habitat. We will look at perhaps later extending our walking trails and doing another Forest Boardwalk through this area for our birding, walking and nature enthusiasts.

• The new thermal security cameras and fibre line for our

perimeter fence were held up at the end of last year by some delays in the paperwork, but that will also get going shortly.

On a lighter note and after all the serious stuff, we had our first wildlife talk this year called “Meet the Neighbours” from a humorous and entertaining Pat McKrill on the unlikely subject of frogs.

They are a great opportunity to get to know your neighbours (the human ones) and to grow the wonderful community spirit that we have here at Dunkirk.

This may not be everybody’s idea of fun but after some good laughs and an engaging and lively discussion, I think we had a few converts. We learned to look more closely for the little things. Look out for more talks and events.

On that note, I leave you with the words of W.B. Yeats: “The world is full of magical things, patiently waiting for your senses to grow sharper.” Cheers!

Clubhouse Manager’s Newsletter

Dear Dunkirk residents, As we dive into the new year, we’re excited to share some updates and events happening at Dunkirk Estate.

We hope your holidays were filled with joy and cherished moments with loved ones and friends. We extend a warm welcome home to all

who were away during the festive season.

I would like to start by describing an incident that occurred at our Beach Club.

Early this month, we had one of our young residents get into some trouble in the sea while bodysurfing with

a mate. A couple sitting upstairs suddenly noticed someone in trouble and shouted at the lifeguards who got running very quickly. By the time he was eventually washed in (luckily in between two rocks), he was approximately 130 metres down the beach. This happened very quickly, in about five minutes, as I witnessed the incident. Thankfully, he is a waterboy and can swim well.

I ask that if you drop the little ones off and they are

unattended, please make sure they understand the ocean on that day or encourage them to chat with me before going out. The HOA would like to hold an “Ocean Appreciation talk” at the Beach Club to re-instil some fundamentals, assist in guiding our little ones, and equip them with the tools to deal with the sometimes unsafe environment we all love. The event will be communicated via our HOA channels. While we are grateful for the positive outcome of this incident, it serves as a reminder

of the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the importance of being mindful when enjoying its beauty or having fun.

CLUBHOUSE PROJECTS

We have accomplished some much-needed upgrades since the last newsletter. The bathroom upgrade is finally completed with new tiling in the showers, taps, basins, door handles and mirrors and a modernised moulding system to give the space depth and class. The artwork has been hung and the handicapped toilet

ESTATE UPDATE 14

It was a great way to kick off the new year with a fantastic padel game with my colleagues at Karibu Padel in Umhlali. Natasha organised a team-building activity to help us take a break from work for a few hours as everyone was busy in December. During the holiday season, staff worked hard to collect refuse and maintain the pools and Clubhouses on all the public holidays and even Christmas Day, and haven’t had a chance to do something fun together. None of us knew how to play padel, but the amazing team at Karibu explained the rules and we got started. It was a bit chaotic at first, but in rounds two and three, our team got into it. We were competitive and worked well together.

Out and About Dunkirk Staff

In the end, we had prizes for the best players, and there was a tie between Terrence Makhaye and Mthuthuzeli Shusha, who did an excellent job as first-timers. We had an epic afternoon with pizza, energy drinks and water to keep us hydrated on the hot day. Overall, it was a blast! 15

The Importance of Wetlands

17
WORDS LUKE ALLEN

With February being known as World Wetland

Month, I thought it appropriate to give some insight into why wetlands are so vital in ensuring the health of our planet and the human race. Over the past 200 years, many of our large wetlands have been damaged and encroached on. This is due to the expansion of cities, roadways and, the largest threat, agriculture. Durban was

once a large wetland, extending from the Umgeni River south to Amanzimtoti. Thankfully, we still have large intact wetlands such as the Okavango Delta. These wetlands are vital for ensuring clean drinking water, flood control and storage of water during droughts.

Dunkirk is lucky enough to have its little wetland system, comprising coastal swamp forests. These tracts of forest act as sponges, slowing water down and creating a moist ecosystem that harbors many hundreds of organisms.

NATURE

Our Dunkirk coastal swamp forest supports many threatened species. These include the blue duiker, spotted ground thrush, crowned eagle and painted reed frog. These species are a very good indication of a healthy ecosystem if they are present. We are truly privileged to have a pristine piece of this habitat right on our doorstep, and we must look after it.

Success AT DUSI

GORDON SHAW’S 30TH DUSI

Gordon finished his 30th Dusi Canoe Marathon. However, his times are getting so slow that Janine, his wife, says she is tired of waiting so long and is therefore retiring from seconding.

Of course, Gordon says he must either get a younger second or a younger wife. In March, Janine and Gordon will be paddling the circumference of Mauritius in a double paddle ski. That should be interesting!

MCGREGORS AT DUSI

For this year's Dusi Canoe Marathon, Hank and I decided to pair up. It’s such an awesome race and the ultimate challenge for paddling as you must negotiate technical and big rapids and do lots of running with the boat on your shoulder.

26

RESIDENTS

Our goal for this year's race was to see how well we could place in the overall field. Having this in mind was motivating throughout the three days as we were constantly racing the men’s crews around us! We ended up 16th overall which is the highest placing a mixed doubles crew has come in the modern era. With running being a major component of the race, it was tough, but we were able to make up time through the rapids.

I think doing a race like the Dusi is an amazing experience and doing it with your husband is something special!

RESIDENTS

A big part of doing the Dusi is having a strong seconding team to encourage you along the way and provide support with food and drinks.

We were lucky enough to have our close friend and fellow Dunkirk resident Quinton Rutherfoord as well as my brother Matt Elliott as our seconds!

Dunkirk Wildlife Talks

An extremely entertaining evening was had by everyone who attended our last “Meet the Neighbours”

Wildlife talk at Ray’s Kitchen.

Pat McKrill, who is passionate about everything concerning the environment, especially frogs and snakes, regaled us with tales of frogs and their antics and had everyone in stitches with his sense of humour.

Keeping it very PC for the juniors in the audience, Pat showed everyone how to identify the different species by their calls and explained the basics of their daily living, with some very interesting details. He showed us what we can learn from these fascinating little animals, how to get along with each other, and what’s happening in our world by taking the time to notice the little things.

Dressing up in his “frog hunting gear” of a shower cap, black plastic bag and gumboots (because frogs come out in the rain, you know) and wielding his essential tools (torch and phone), he brought a refreshing, new way of experiencing these very maligned and environmentally sensitive little creatures.

Afterward, everyone enjoyed a delicious meal, as always, from Ray’s Kitchen, with proceeds going towards Flag Animal Farm, who take in so many of our injured birds and wildlife.

Look out for our next talk (topic to be announced) coming soon!
