Inspiring Business Couple

Weddings In Ballito

I like to read, not because I’m a publisher — although reading does help — but because a really good friend and wise mentor of mine once told me that the future me is no different to the current me, except for the people I would meet and be influenced by… and the books I read. That piece of sage advice set me off on a course of reading over many years and, if I had to take a guess, I’d say that I’ve read well over 50,000 pages on pretty much the same topics — business, success, strategy, execution and human behaviour.

Why this profound realization now, you might ask? Well, I’ve decided not to buy any new books, but to grab my old ones off the shelf and re-read them, but this time to be slow and methodical about it, making sure that I can take the learning from the pages and apply it to my life. I can’t guarantee the application will all be positive, but I sense that the second time round will be better than the first. Plus, I’m finding it really insightful to read the notes I’ve written in the margins on the pages of these books, some of which are from years ago and definitely get me chuckling about my view of the world. The words on the pages have a different meaning now and even more relevance, as I have more worldly experience to apply for context.

Am I now a guru on these topics? Not a chance… and I know why! Looking back on all the information I’ve consumed, I can honestly say that I’ve applied far less of it than I’ve consumed. It’s not because I haven’t wanted to but, by churning through so much information and knowledge, I’ve only ever held onto a few of the nuggets of wisdom from all those books. The rest is in my head somewhere and I know that because sometimes it splutters out my mouth and sounds impressive, but as for the rest, I just haven’t called on it yet.

All of this also makes me realise that these paper books have value. My thoughts, ideas and feelings have been written on the pages at different times of my life and, hopefully, one day my kids will read a few of these books which will give them a little more insight into who I was and how I thought about the world. Sjoe, deep stuff! But that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

My point? It’s not to tell you that I’ve read many books. My point is that knowledge without the opportunity to apply it, to create experiences, remains purely what it is — knowledge. My greatest growth and learning have come from doing stuff, reflecting on it and considering how best I can improve on it and, from what I can gather, it is the application of knowledge to experience that creates wisdom. I probably should be a lot wiser, almost guru-like, but I sense that I’ve read one too many books without seeking out the opportunity to apply its contents to what it was I was doing in that season in my life. Right there is a lesson in wisdom!

I hope you enjoy the pages of this magazine, filled as they are with stories of people, photos of places and the highlights of what’s going on in your community at the moment. Keep a copy or two for your kids because flipping through the pages years from now will bring smiles to your faces and spark memories of things you’ve done and places you visited… and that is the gift that is books and magazines. Till we meet again God Bless Justin

As a mom and a photographer, she believes that there is nothing more special than capturing the innocence of a new-born or the laughter of a toddler. A look into the lives of mother’s of many

Growing up in a family of six, I know how tiring and, yes, trying it can be for all the dedicated, brave mommies who more often than not don’t get the praise they deserve for raising not one, two or three, but four or five healthy, happy children. With this in mind we are featuring some Ballito moms who have a lot of love to give and who love being a mom of many. We get to know Ballito’s big families...

“A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart, and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it; it is in one word, EFFECTIVE.” - Irving Penn.

God said, “When I made the woman she had to be special. “I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world, yet gentle enough to give comfort. “I gave her the inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times comes from her children. “I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up, and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining.” Excerot taken from the thought provoking story A Woman.

Ballito Bloggers profile

Get to know

your bloggers Andrew Swanepoel, by day, designer of fashion and corporate wear branding at Rightback Embroidery, by night, Swany, scholar-artist, colouring outside the lines and art blogger! These days people who have something to share, blog it! In the next couple editions we will be featuring some of Ballito’s best bloggers who have something interesting to say and are well worth the read! Want to get your blog featured email storm@ fabmags.co.za. Tell us about your blog? “Learn a little about the man and I guarantee that you will look at his art differently.” I said that and I genuinely believe that it applies to any artist, woman or man. I hope that as you read my posts you will gain some insight into what will inspire, initiate, colour, shape and drive my artworks. My blog, www.swanyart. com, is where the reader/viewer and the writer/artist meet to collaborate to create art. How many times do you blog on average? Generally at least once a week, but if I have the time I do try and write every couple of days. Why a blog? Artists usually keep what is called a visual diary (a sort of scrapbook of ideas and images, but more complex and detailed) where they conceptualise and experiment. My blog is an extension of that, with the added bonus of being able to share my ideas and artwork with anyone who is interested. Future of your blog? Hopefully, as I grow as an artist, it will form a valuable and informative companion piece to the work I am creating and have created. Blogs you love? To be honest, I am more of a Twitter fan. I find that tweets have a very poetic, haiku-like essence because of the restricted format. It’s kind of like having

22 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

a conversation with yourself and hoping that someone will join in. Some of my favourites are: @TheWallBreakers, @ HuffPostArts, @artpromotivate, @ReversedWorld, @GrumpyyCat Books on your bedside table? I am a serial reader, so I usually have a large number of books next to my bed at any given time. Some are required reading for my art theory studies, some to feed my soul and some just for pure enjoyment. I’m reading Norman Mailer’s biography on Picasso at the moment, as well as a wad of papers on Poststructuralism and South African feminist performance artists. My light-reading book is The Vampire Shrink by Lynda Hilburn. Fave shops? I looooove bookstores, so any Exclusive Books store. I especially like secondhand bookstores and my favourite is Last Chance Books. It is in an old house in Davenport Road that also boasts a tattoo parlour and a range of designer clothes. In the same street there are some awesome restaurants, like Yossi’s and Pizzetta. It’s a really cool street to hang out in and, as an added bonus, it is within walking distance from the KZNSA Gallery. Latest Obsession? My latest obsession is a pair of retro-roller-skates that I got from the States. I am looking forward to some awesome KZN weather this winter so that I can go skating down at the Durban Beachfront. Fave Destination? I am an ocean-type of guy, so I have to say, locally, Salt Rock/Sheffield Beach, and abroad, Venice Beach, California. Venice Beach has such a bohemiansurfer-laidback buzz to it that literally rocks!

Ballito Car review

Is the new

F-Type Words Richard Webb

worthy of icon status?

B

ritish design is in the ascendant, claims Richard Webb, as he contemplates Jaguar’s first two-seater sports car for 50 years. Read stories about some really cool cars and you’ll find the word “iconic” scattered about like fairy dust in a Peter Pan story. But what does iconic really mean when applied to design? And is Jaguar’s new F-Type potentially iconic? Icons set benchmarks, are groundbreaking in terms of technology and they improve on the past. The map of the London underground is a prime example. Devised by Harry Beck in 1931, he designed the map based on an electrical circuit board, with each line in a different colour and diamonds for interchange stations.

26 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

The red Routemaster London bus and the original MINI are also icons. Enzo Ferrari reckoned the E-Type was too, when he called it “the most beautiful car ever made”. Now Jaguar has finally produced what is arguably one of the most-anticipated cars of 2013. So why has it taken Jaguar so long to make a proper sports car since the last E-Type in 1975? I recently asked Julian Thomson, Jaguar’s Director of Advanced Design, that question at the launch of the F-Type in Pamplona, North East Spain. “It’s been an intimidating car to do in many ways. Expectations are massively high. The design team have tried to make that emotional connection that Jaguar had with the C-Type, D-Type and the

E-Type,” he says. However, the British have some real heritage in this market and Jaguar even more so than most. This reality shines through in this two-seat sports car with its choice of two engines — a 3.0-litre V6 or 5.0-litre V8, both with superchargers. The range-topping V8S has a handy 364kw and 625nm of torque to play with. All S models get adaptive dampers and a (very) active exhaust likely to annoy distant neighbours, but delight petrol-heads. Depress the bronze “start” button on the dash and the howling burble immediately telegraphs the driver-focused credentials of the car as the supercharger spools up to speed. It sounds Machiavellian as it spits, fizzes and pops on the over-run, causing small children to hide and

three-abreast cyclists to make some highly unflattering hand gestures. At R1,345,000, the V8 S may not be considered a bargain, but it certainly is great value for money. On a 240-kilometre blast over the serpentine, undulating Spanish Pyrenees roads, the V8 S proved to be a titan of a car, with 0 to 100km/h flashing up in 4.2 seconds on the way to a restricted 298km/h at full tilt. Performance is dramatic across the whole range. The entry-level R825,000 V6 offers some truly satisfying driving dynamics set to rival that of Porsche’s finest efforts. With 0 to 100km/h arriving in just 5.1 seconds and, even quicker still, coming in at 4.8 seconds, is the V6 S, priced at R945,000.

Inside, the cockpit flows around the driver and the interface is intensely tactile with a row of toggle switches below the dials echoing the Jaguar sports cars of the past. The F-Type oozes showroom-floor appeal and is thoroughly modern, with exquisitely detailed lines worthy of its sports car bloodline. So, did the F-Type manage to recapture the magic of the E-Type? Whether it will be iconic or not will be the subject of much chattering, but it’s definitely moved the benchmark along for others to follow and is a superb all-round package worthy of all the hype.

Business Interview Ballito

Farm Owner Tell us a bit about yourself and your company? I am Siphiwe Nyawo and I run a sugar cane farm in KwaDukuza Why are you in this business? I grew up on a farm at Ingwavuma where we used to farm mielies and this is where I developed a love and passion for farming. What are the advantages of owning your own business? It is a long-term investment. One has to understand that in business one does not get returns on investment immediately. One can take informed and sound decisions relatively sooner without redtape, which is good for a business which is capital intensive. In terms of advances in agriculture, I have easy access to information that keeps me abreast of world developments. Challenges? Climate change and changing weather pattern pose a challenge to the farming community. With all the advances in technology available nowadays, we can do everything correctly, but we cannot control the weather. This industry is predominantly male-dominated; hence the myth that only a man can run a farming business efficiently. Population growth also poses a challenge. Forecasts for Africa’s population growth and agricultural potential present a myriad of opportunities in the terms of economic growth in the 21st century. What challenges have you faced as a woman in a predominantly male industry? Workers often do not have confidence in their employer’s ability if she is a woman

and only become comfortable once she has proved her capability.

What are your hours? One hundred and fifty hours per month.

How old is your business? we are now in our 5th year and it’s going strong.

What motivates you? Excellent results after I have put in more effort.

Why did you choose Ballito to run your business? Because the entire area has wellnourished soil with an abundance of seasonal rains, it makes business sense to grow sugar cane.

How do you market your business? We have an organised structure in South Africa, called SASA, which markets our sugar cane worldwide.

Do you feel you have to prove yourself in the industry? Yes! I had to prove myself in order to gain respect from the financial institutions, the farming community and the workers who are an important asset to the business. What are your strengths? The respect from the work force that I command, which all comes through hard work. What sets you apart from other male-driven businesses like yours? I am goal-driven, ambitious, a hard worker and am determined to get to the top. Are you treated differently as a woman? Not anymore. Within our environment, I have been able to achieve a lot within a short space of time which has earned me respect among my peers. What are your greatest accomplishments? I won an award in 2012 as the Best Female Farmer of the Year.

Is your business impacted by international influences? Indeed, yes. The weaker-than-expected economic growth in countries that we trade with has worsened since July 2012 in spite of massive policy interventions to attempt to solve the debt crisis. Even the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned of a sharp deterioration in global growth if European policy-makers do not take decisive action on both national and Eurozone levels. Is your business affected by economic, political and environmental factors? Definitely. Economically speaking, it’s not easy to access finance from banks because of constantly changing policies by institutions meant to support businesses. Politically speaking, the tenure of office and constant reshuffling of government ministers is a problem for financial institutions because of a lack of clear policies. A worrying environmental factor is the fact that, during harvest time, I still have to use the ancient method burning sugar cane, something which is not considered environmentally friendly.

How many days do you work per week? Seven days a week as I often have to attend formal and informal meetings.

Ballito Business Interview

Indigidiverse Tell us about yourself and your company? I’m Jane Bertram and my company is called Indigidiverse. We provide diverse services in the indigenous plant field, creating habitats for birds, butterflies, bushbuck, blue duiker and other smaller creatures and helping people to understand what brings wildlife to their gardens. I conduct guided walks and help people who want to learn more about the environment. I work with ecologists in drawing up plant and bird lists for areas where new game reserves have been created. We draw landscape plans for wildlife-friendly gardens, grow the plants required in our own nursery and install and maintain these gardens. Why are you in this business? Because I love everything about plants and the creatures that benefit from the habitat they provide. What are the advantages of owning your own business? You get to make the decisions and do things the way you know they should be done to achieve excellent results. The job satisfaction is great as you constantly see results and you can shape the business to what suits you. Challenges? “The buck ends with me”. All the problems are my problems. I have to deal with every part of the business… even the parts that don’t deal with the creative things that I enjoy, like machine breakdowns. What challenges have you faced as a woman in a predominantly male industry?

30 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

None that I can remember. I believe that if you are positive, cheerful, artistic and confident, what gender you are makes no difference. “Knowledge is power, but enthusiasm pulls the switch!” How old is your business? 10 years old. Why did you choose Ballito to run your business? My business evolved out of my passion for the subject. I had been living in Ballito for a number of years before I started my business, but have chosen to stay here because my family is here and, fortunately, with all the development in the area, there is a need for skilled landscapers and plants’ people. How did you get into this business? Through my friend and mentor, Geoff Nichols, plants-man and naturalist extraordinaire, who noticed my passion for the subject and encouraged my first tentative steps. Do you feel you have to prove yourself in this industry? Absolutely! My team and I love what we do and our gardens are our only advertising. What sets you apart from other male-driven businesses like yours? Ah! I grew up with a father who planted magnificent gardens and I learned to love pretty flowers and a girl’s love for flowers gives her a primitive need to use a large variety, not only for their beauty, but for their perfume as well. Girls also have the patience to pay attention to detail.

What is your greatest accomplishment? That is a difficult question. Possibly sharing my enthusiasm for nature and inspiring others to enjoy the natural world and to care for the earth. After all, you know what they say: “Save the earth — it’s the only planet with chocolate”! How many days do you work per week? Five days in the field and one day’s admin a week. How do you market your business? On the websites of the two major estates where I provide a service — Zimbali and Simbithi. By having my company’s name and number on the door of my vehicle. But primarily by word-of-mouth; after all, we create functional habitats and plant beautiful gardens. Is your business impacted by international influences? Yes, especially by the fuel price and the general international slump. Is your business affected by economic, political and environmental factors? Yes, the general economy will obviously affect the amount of work available. Politics has a small effect. Environmentally speaking, torrential downpours of rain during summer can often mean a huge expense for labour to do a job that has already been quoted for. This is very often caused by run-off from neighbouring properties where stormwater run-off has not been properly dealt with.

Feature Ballito

Gijima Garden & Tool Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do? I am Cheri Allison, the owner of Gijima Garden and Tool in Umhlali. We specialize in forest and garden machinery like brush-cutters, chainsaws, lawnmowers, etc. Our services include sales, repairs and the hiring out of garden equipment, as well as small construction machinery like generators, breakers and compaction equipment. What does your company’s name mean? “Gijima” means “run” in Zulu. To me it is another word for “service delivery” — something we try to give our customers. Why did you choose to go into this business? It wasn’t a choice. I joined a hire company many years ago and for many years it just “stuck” until I really had had enough and moved on. I then joined a company that specialized in forest and garden equipment. From there I had the opportunity to relocate and run a hire company once again (I suppose once in the blood, always in the blood) and I began to incorporate the forest and garden side into the company. A year later I bought the company and, well, we grew from there. What are the advantages of owning your own business? Your hard work and dedication lines your

own pockets and not someone else’s. Although you put in lots of after-hour work, your time is still your own. Challenges? Keeping your finger on the pulse at all times — this includes every aspect of owning a business. What challenges have you faced as a woman in a predominantly male industry? Ha-ha-ha! — that’s a good one! You always have to prove your technical and mechanical knowledge of all the products. What are your strengths? Liaising with people, dedication and never giving up! What sets your company apart from other male-driven businesses like yours? Nothing — we are all the same; just run by a different gender. What is your greatest accomplishment? The growth of the company. What motivates you? My will to achieve and succeed in all I do. I don’t give up easily. Is your business impacted by international influences? Yes, definitely, especially by the exchange rate and the importation of cheaper goods.

Ballito Netcare

Your Anaesthetic Dr Ian Lander, Dr Ameesha Kuarpersad and Dr Jo Schmidt

Who is the anaesthetist? A consultant anaesthetist is a specialist doctor who, after qualifying in medicine, spends about four years training in the specialty of anaesthesia, pain management and critical care.

What is an anaesthetic? An anaesthetic is used to temporarily reduce or take away sensation so that surgery or potentially painful procedures can be performed. There are two types of anaesthetics: • General, which make the patient unconscious. • Local, which numbs the part of the body that would otherwise feel pain. Anaesthesia-induced sleep is not the same as ordinary sleep but a form of temporary unconsciousness that is carefully controlled by the anaesthetist. This involves administering the right quantity of anaesthesia for each kind of operation. Throughout the procedure, different types of medicines are added or removed to relieve the pain and maintain the right level of unconsciousness and ensure that the patient is not aware. For some operations, the best option is to combine a local anaesthetic such as spinal or epidural anaesthesia, with medicines to sedate the patient or make them a little sleepy.

Dr Ameesha Kuarpersad What does the anaesthetist do? The anaesthetist takes a careful look at the history of the patient’s general health and uses this information to decide how best to offer care. The various options will be discussed with the patient before the operation; patients are encouraged to ask questions and speak about any worries they may have. During the operation, the anaesthetist stays with the patient at all times to make sure they are comfortable and safe. This includes controlling pain, replacing body fluids and measuring and controlling all the vital functions of the the body such as the heart beat, blood pressure and brain and kidney function. This process continues after the operation, when the anaesthetist will organise the control of any pain or sickness and advise on when it is safe to eat and drink again.

Why is eating and drinking not allowed before an operation? If there is food and drink in the stomach, the patient may vomit while under the anaesthetic. The vomit can pass into the lungs. Under anaesthetic the body loses its ability to cough it up. This can cause serious lung damage. Eating is usually

Dr Ian Lander

Dr Jo Schmidt

not allowed from six hours before surgery but in some cases clear fluid may be taken up to four hours beforehand.

Five fears about anaesthetic Patients often express the following five fears:

• • • • •

That the anaesthetic won’t put them to sleep That they won’t wake up after the anaesthetic That they will wake up during the procedure That they will have pain during or after the operation That they may be nauseous or vomit

Are anaesthetics safe? Anaesthetics are almost entirely safe, but every operations carries a very slight risk. People who are in poor health or older run a higher risk than those who are fit and well. Anaesthesia for certain types of operation carry a higher risk than others. This can be discussed with the anaesthetist.

How does the patient go to sleep? Patients are given a small injection in the

Dr Heralall Chaithram Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist. The ears, nose and throat are very closely interrelated, both anatomically and functionally. Being able to diagnose and treat disorders of these regions offer many challenges, both medically and surgically. Essentially, conditions affecting the ear, for example, are often due to a nose or throat problem and would therefore often require treatment of both the source and end result simultaneously. I love the diversity my speciality offers. It allows me to deal with a range of patients from newborn to senior citizens and

be able to render medical, surgical or combination therapy. The surgical aspects are also diverse and range from macrosurgery and microsurgery to endoscopic surgery and for the future robotic surgical techniques which are currently evolving. One of my patients presented with a chronic cough and had several investigations done by many doctors which were all clear. She eventually figured out that her chest was actually normal. She did some research on the Internet which suggested that her nose might be a possible source of her problem. A CAT-scan confirmed that her nose was the cause but that she had a fungal ball in one of her sinuses. This was surgically removed and her cough disappeared.

Dr Dion Steer General Surgery General surgeons cover a wide field which makes it an exciting and stimulating area to specialise in. Surgery is an ever-evolving field. Surgical dogma is constantly being challenged and we have to constantly update ourselves to provide the most current management. One of the biggest challenges is knowing when to operate and when to manage medically and which route will provide the best outcome for our patients. There are too many reasons why I love my speciality to put down on paper, but when I was starting off as a surgeon the

Netcare Ballito

hand to make them go to sleep. Some patients - especially children are given a mixture of gases to put them to sleep very quickly. Parents may stay with their children until they are asleep.

How and where does the patient wake up? After the operation, the anaesthetist stops giving the medicines that were keeping the patient unconscious and he or she is taken to a recovery room where there are specially trained staff. The longer the operation, the longer it usually takes to wake up. When the patient has woken up completely, they are taken back to the ward. Occasionally, people recover consciousness in the operating theatre once their operation is over. This is quite safe. How do people feel when they wake up? Patients often feel cold and slightly confused. They may have pain or feel nauseous, but these symptoms can be treated when the anaesthetist visits the patients to check that they are all right before they are discharged from the recovery room. With thanks to Dr Gordon Smith

adrenalin, blood and guts of trauma was what I enjoyed. As I get wiser, I get just as much fulfilment from knowing that my patient is better-off after treatment than before.

Dr Mike du Toit Endoscopic Sinus Surgery specialising in middle ear surgery I love the ability to work with a broad spectrum of patients, both children and adults. The part of my daily work that gives me the most work satisfaction is dealing with sick children with bad tonsils. After removing

the nasty little tonsils, the kids’ quality of life is improved dramatically.

I really like the variety of cases that I am introduced to. It thoroughly energises me.

I’m currently working with a patient with throat cancer, which was successfully treated, but who now has a new primary cancer of the palate, which we are busy treating too.

The Whipple procedure, which is a Panceaticoduodenectomy, is my most complicated procedure. It is extremely long and very complex to explain in such a small space. But go for it, read more about it online, it is fascinating.

Dr Naven Govender Specialist Surgeon There is always something different and there is a vast array of pathology.

Tell us a little bit about youself? I was born and raised in Durban. My husband, Andre, is awesome — he is one of the JHB-Ballito weekly-commuters, but we have found our rhythm and it all works! We’re passionate about our kids; we have a seven-year-old daughter, Madison, and a five-year-old son, Ashton. They make us laugh! How long have you been a photographer? I started taking photos 11 years ago, when my niece was born. I was 24 at that time. It turned into a passion, which I decided to pursue professionally three years ago.

What is your favourite photography accessory? I used to take along a boot full of accessories to my clients’ shoots, but it turned out that the natural surroundings often add more to a shoot than any prop could. With new-borns, I feel that it is much more rewarding to capture them in their own homes, in a setting in which mom and baby feel comfortable, instead of forcing them into unnatural poses. My lenses are my most valued accessory. I love using my Nikon 105 Macro, which allows me to get great close-ups without having to invade a child’s space or comfort zone.

What or who got you started in photography and did you study? Geoff Goldswain, one of Durban’s top wedding photographers, took me under his wing after having taken our wedding photos. He’s not a conventional wedding photographer — for Geoff, pictures are about finding the right location. This has really inspired me to try and find unusual locations for my photo-shoots. All too often, clients want the same settings and the same poses, but I really like to experiment and try new and exciting alternatives.

How important is Photoshop in your final images? I don’t use Photoshop a lot. I prefer to stay as close as possible to the original image. I only do minor colour-corrections.

How would you describe your style? Anything spontaneous. I like to take capture moments when people are not looking. I love being a background figure, capturing everyday life and the dynamics that characterise a family and their interactions.

Destinations you’ve always wanted to shoot at? I loved shooting in Thailand; it is one of the most beautiful locations I have ever seen. In the future I would love to shoot pictures amongst the historic buildings in Cape Town.

What type of cameras do you shoot with? Nikon. I feel it’s important for clients to check what kind of equipment a photographer uses as it could have an impact on the end result. I use the Nikon Pro Series camera and lenses, which have high-quality glass and can capture speed, have amazing depth of field and adapt to low light conditions.

Who are the photographers that you most admire and how have they helped shape your photographic style? Apart from Geoff, I really admire Christine Meintjies and Jacqui Bruniquel, two wedding photographers whose work is truly mind-blowing.

Describe the ideal conditions that help get a great photo? Winter is a great time of the year — people seem to be more comfortable and less bothered by the heat and humidity that is characteristic of Durban summers. www.earthchildphotography.co.za

Ballito Families A look into the lives of mother’s of many

Growing up in a family of six, I know how tiring and, yes, trying it can be for all the dedicated, brave mommies who more often than not don’t get the praise they deserve for raising not one, two or three, but four or five healthy, happy children. With this in mind we are featuring some Ballito moms who have a lot of love to give and who love being a mom of many. We get to know Ballito’s big families... God said “When I made the woman she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world, yet gentle enough to give comfort. I gave her the inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times comes from her children. I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up, and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining.” (Excerpt taken from the thought provoking story A Woman. author unknown)

m n Strydo e r a K y m The Mom ys o four bo Mommy t Tell us about your family? We are a family of six. My husband and I have four boys – Travis (15), Trent (12), Reece (11) and Rogan (7). Your funniest / worst moment as a mom? Arriving at Gateway for a birthday party, I asked one of the boys to hold the cake for a minute and he dropped the whole cake on the floor. It was sooo not funny at the time, but we laugh about it now. Do you have extra domestic or au pair help? We have two domestic helpers, one who lives in, while the other lives out. Our live-in lady has been part of the family for over 20 years and is a super granny that helps in all areas from pick-ups, drop-offs, homework and even midweek dinners.

According to a survey, moms that have three children have higher stress levels then moms with less or more than three children... do you agree with that? I don’t think it is more stressful, but definitely busier and very rewarding. You need to prioritize what it important and don’t sweat the small stuff. Routine, routine, routine. As a mom of many, what do you feel causes you the most stress i.e. husband or the fact that you only have two hands? Ha, ha, ha! Probably that I only have two hands and two ears. You need to make special time for each child — this is so, so important. Between us my hubby and I do club time (individual time) frequently with each child. Hubby is definitely not a stress, just a huge help.

The frequently asked question — who do you think are easier, boys or girls? I only have boys and they are busy, busy, busy, but all get along really well and are easily entertained — you just need a rugby ball and everyone is happy. Number one coping strategy when times get really tough? Wine, spa, salon, best friend, granny etc... My No 1 coping mechanism is God. Pray, re-reboot and refocus. When you have kids it is said that there comes a time when your kids do something that makes the sleepless nights and lack of time for yourself all worth it — what was yours? Observing each child’s personal growth in sport, academics and developing their characters. This is so rewarding as each child is unique in their own way.

The Mom

my Nico le Maur el Mommy to four girls

Tell us about your family? We are the Maurel family. I am married to Marc and am mom to four beautiful daughters. Courtney, our eldest, is 15 and then, after a sizable gap, we have Ryen (six), Demica (four) and Emme (10 months). Your funniest / worst moment ever as a mom? My worst moment was when the girls kept changing their minds about what they wanted for breakfast and, after much whining and a few tears, I lifted the cornflakes box as high over my head as I could and threw it on the floor. It may also be the funniest moment I’ve ever had, too. Do you have extra domestic or au pair help? Do you think this is essential when going over the three-mark? I have a full-time domestic worker and a nanny helps with the baby on a Tuesday and a Thursday. I am very grateful for the help. I think that extra help after any number of children is wonderful. Your best-kept secret (husband, time management, being relaxed, home schooling, etc, etc)? Some of my secrets are to walk away when I feel my temperature rising, to respond to my children and not react and to drink copious amounts of tea to keep me happy. I love the fact that we home school our girls as this allows us to educate our girls not

only academically but also holistically. We educate the whole child, equipping each for life in the real world. But my best-kept secret is a relationship with God, through whom all things are possible. Without His grace I would be riddled with mom-guilt and I would definitely not be the mom I am today. As a mom of many, what do you feel causes you the most stress i.e. husband or the fact that you only have two hands? I suppose sleep deprivation causes some stress, as does a lack of help and when kids are unwell. The frequently asked question — who do you think are easier, boys or girls? I had always thought that I would have a good mix of both boys and girls as my husband and I are both from families of two boys and two girls. Being blessed with only girls has made me more aware of my friends’ little boys and I can definitely say that girls are generally calmer, quieter and less demanding than boys. That said, girls are also generally more emotionally charged and I sometimes think that I would cope better with wild boys than moody girls… and then I wake up and realize how lovely it is to drink hot tea while my girls play in one spot.

Number one coping strategy when times get really tough? Wine, spa, salon, best friend, granny etc... My number one coping mechanism is a hot bath at the end of the day — and some me-only time on a Tuesday and Thursday morning. When you have kids it is said that there comes a time when your kids do something that makes the sleepless nights and lack of time for yourself all worth it — what was yours? The first time they look up at you in the middle of the night and say “Mama” — melts me every time. Best mommy moment ever? How do you pinpoint one specific moment when there are so many happening all the time? I will never forget meeting each of my girl’s seconds after they were born. I can still remember how each one felt lying on my chest, wrapped in a hospital towel.

“As for me and my house, we will serve The Lord” — Joshua 24:15

eel imee Tow A y m m o The M ls o Five gir t y m m o M Tell us about your family? My “baptism of fire” into motherhood was a set of twin girls! My twins, Tatum and Courtney, now aged nine were followed at respectable intervals of three years by three more girls... Simone who is six, Madison, three, and our baby, Jordan, 16 months. I am married to the love of my life, my soul-mate Craig, who is THE most dedicated husband and father! Your funniest / worst moment ever since becoming a mom? Okay, so here it is, my most unforgettable story. Trust me, this incident was life changing. Recently, I decided to keep my eldest daughter, Tatum, at home, as she wasn’t feeling well. The morning flew by, as it always does, and before I knew it, it was time to pick up the rest of the girls from school. My two-year-old, Madi, heard me pick up my keys (which I always tried to do quietly, so that I can quickly nip out),came running and hopped into the back of my car with Tatum, who felt that she needed to come along for the drive. As I walked out of the door, I saw my baby waving at me through the glass doors. I felt guilty about leaving her at home and thought, “Oh, what the hell!” so I ran back inside, grabbed her, and strapped her in! Arriving at school, I collected my other two daughters and off we went home. On the way, I asked Tatum how she was feeling

and got no reply, so I asked again, annoyed with her for not answering me. (By this time, I was driving through the boom gates into our estate.) Silence! I asked her again if she was feeling okay, but there was still no reply. It dawned on me that something was just not right. The child had a high temperature; she could have passed out in the back of the car! Completely freaked out, I pulled over and, in a state of total panic, I flung all the doors open, as well as the boot, but my child was nowhere — I was suddenly in my own worst nightmare! By this stage all the girls were going crazy and there was total panic all around! At least six cars stopped behind me. It took only one call to the school to find out that Tatum had indeed been left…at the school tuck shop...where else? We are premium customers there, after all! She had apparently climbed out of the car and told me that she was going into the shop during which time I had loaded up, packed the kids in and driven off! What on earth must have gone through her mind when she saw me drive off — totally devastated! I drove back to the school, hoping to just do a drive-by, thinking she could hop in while the car was still in motion, NOT! I drove into the school and found her being consoled by a couple of the teachers, who looked at me with bemused expressions and a little sympathy as well. This is when I realized that when you have five children

you should ALWAYS do a head-count. More importantly, I realised that no matter how many children we have, we put too much pressure on ourselves as moms to be perfect! The real human parent, who is present and imperfect but honest about it, gives great strength to the child who is just as human and flawed. It gives them permission to be themselves. Sometimes I see people looking at me and obviously wondering why on earth this woman has so many kids. You can have lots of kids and love them and give them all the attention they need as long as they are a priority... How do you manage? There is no father out there that can manage a little army like my incredible husband can. Craig is a machine. He can make lunches, dress the girls (OK, so sometimes the little one comes home with her PJs still under her uniform), brush teeth and do the best pony tails in town and still run a successful company — and put up with me. We make an incredible team and we know each other’s limitations — often I hear the words, “Don’t worry, I’ve got this” come out of his mouth! Do you have extra domestic or au pair help? Do you think it is essential when going over the three- mark? They say it takes a small village to raise a child and my children are so blessed to Photo credit: Karen Mackridge

Women’s month Feature Ballito have a few coping strategies. My mom and dad for sure — I rely on them a lot, emotionally and to help with the kids, and I have a wonderful family which is a huge support! Date night with my husband once, sometimes twice a week is a must. I am also surrounded by incredible friends who also have big families. That helps enormously and it’s nice to see that we are actually normal in the greater scheme of things! And, of course, a good bottle of bubbly in the fridge, for celebrations, or “those” days when you just don’t need a reason.

have two sets of wonderful grandparents, who are an incredible influence in their lives. I also have two of the most amazing domestic workers. Realistically, running my home is like running a small corporation and it is the hardest job in management that I have ever had. If I had to write a Position Results Description of my job, it would fill several pages and make me a candidate for The Apprentice. Your best-kept secret (your husband, time management, being relaxed, home schooling, etc, etc)? Yes, I finally gave in and hired a tutor because, on some days, my twins only get home after 5 p.m and that’s the time I’ve started to fall apart. It is a 6 p.m power struggle every day. Still having to do Grade 4 homework, deal with cooking dinner, fit Grade 1 homework in somewhere, plus having a three-year-old throwing tantrum after tantrum because she is exhausted by this time and also have a one- year-old hanging on my leg… (wine, please!) I really, really needed help and I am not even embarrassed about it! It was also no mean feat to bribe a tutor to take on the job, either. Mention the fact that you have twins and suddenly they have full schedules! Make no mistake; I am a very hands-on mom. I like to have a sense of control, but I had to let it go. I got help; it was that or many hours of counselling… Living in a small town has definitely made having a big family easier. From the school my daughters attend, to the doctor, the dentist and the deli, Ballito is a very supportive community, with everyone looking out for one another — it’s perfect to raise a big family in!

experiences, that this is so? I do think you stress more with each child, although the more children you have, the more confident you become in your parenting abilities, but you also realise that you have to let go… just be thankful when they all get to school on time and that none of them were left behind at their extra-mural activities that day (which total 11 per a week, excluding school sport) so now we do a final head-count at bath time! There’s just not enough space in your head for perfectionism when you get to five kids. It just gets to be all about strong survival skills. I think you hit a groove once you get past the outnumbered phase of having three kids and into the seriously-outnumbered territory of five! I love the fact that each child has a built-in playmate, —children enjoy coming to play here because it’s an immediate party! As a mom of many, what do you feel causes you the most stress, i.e. husband or the fact that you only have two hands? As a mom of five, the thing that causes me the most stress is the fact that I only have two hands, so a simple thing, like crossing a road, stresses me out! I have quickly realised that a strong hold on small hands and a loud voice is what counts most in certain situations — like traffic and supermarkets.

Best mommy-moment ever? When our fifth daughter, Jordan, was born it amazed me how all my girls just pulled it together (or, should I say, had to grow up quickly) which made me so sad at times. I remember walking behind Simone, then six, who is the tiniest little thing, while she was carrying her two-year-old sister, Madison, across the park to the car because she was tired, and I was carrying Jordan, who only wanted me at that moment. My twins, Tatum and Courtney, always looking out for their younger sisters, taking on such a big responsibility for such little girls. They have had to learn how to wait their turn and they learn patience that way. Little Madison, who sometimes carries bags bigger than herself to try and help out, learns how to be part of a team. The endless hours they spend entertaining each other, reading stories to each other, even putting the baby to sleep on the odd occasion. I know that the gift of such a big family, the gift of each other, will make all this so worthwhile for them and that they will always have each other. Yes, my life is chaotic, my home has noise levels beyond your wildest imaginings, but our lives are full, our dinner table is buzzing, we have been blessed with the pitter-patter of five pairs of little feet, angels wearing tutus and tiaras. They smother us with love every morning and goodnight kisses every night! We may not have it all together, but together we have it all! So why then, you may ask, did I have five children? I had enough love left in me — simple as that.

Number one coping strategy when times get really tough? Wine, spa, salon, best friend, granny etc... I

acht ll VanderY a d n Ly y m girls The Mom s and two y o b r u o f Mommy to Tell us about your family? My name is Lyndall VanderYacht, I’m a proud mom of three beautiful children of my own and three amazing foster children, all six of whom are under the age of four — when I say that, it sounds absolutely insane. My oldest is Malakai, who is three, then come Zac and Cale, who are almost three, followed by Piper (2), Levi, who has just turned one, and Snow, who is two months old. I have been married to my husband, Kent, for five years, which means that we have “acquired” more than one child each year of our marriage. I know people must look at us and think that we are crazy, but it has always been a dream of mine to have a big family. I love the fact that our house is always full of noise, laughter and giggles. I love the sound of all our children racing their black bikes on the driveway. I consider myself incredibly blessed to be living my dream. Your funniest / worst moment since being a mom? Piper, our oldest girl is surrounded by boys. She is subjected to playing rugby with her dad and her big brothers every

evening, where she is tackled, thrown into the middle of a scrum and mauled. With three big brothers and a rough and tough dad, she has had to learn to hold her own and stand up for herself. You can imagine my horror when we are out in public and she takes it upon herself to start her own game of rugby with an unsuspecting child. Our outings often end in tears when poor little Piper is given a red card and I leave mortified… again. How do you manage? Tea and biscuits take me to my “happy place”, but inevitably Malakai wants a cup of tea too and, because he has one, everyone else wants one as well, so before I know it I’m making another five cups of tea and sharing my precious biscuits. Which leaves me with a cold cup of tea and biscuitless. But no matter how hectic my day is, I ensure that all six children are in bed and asleep by 7pm, which is when I can unwind on the couch with my husband, a hot cup of tea and binge on biscuits. Do you have extra domestic or au pair help? Do you think that this is essential

when going over the three-mark? I have an amazing nanny who is incredible with all my children. I don’t know if it’s essential for all big families to have extra help but, with all my children being so young, I couldn’t do it without her. Between the two of us, we change about 20 nappies a day — I could not do that alone! Your-best kept secret (husband, time management, being relaxed, home schooling, etc, etc)? Definitely my husband! When I’m feeling overwhelmed and frazzled, he steps in and either makes me a cup of tea, watches the children while I take a nap or gets each child to come to me and tell me how pretty I am. He is just incredible! A lot of people say that their first priority is their family, but he lives that way. He is the dad rolling on the carpet with the children, doing bath-time, school runs, grocery shopping and helping with dinner. He isn’t just a father to his children, he knows them intimately and that only comes from spending quality time with each child. He is without a doubt Super Dad and the man of my dreams!

Women’s month Feature Ballito have extra help, my children are hungry and getting tired and I am trying to cook so can’t give them my undivided attention. But I am learning to put aside my need to feel like super mom and instead I have found a few shortcuts, such as ordering “My Chef”, which has made the world of difference to our crazy hour. The frequently asked question — who do you think are easier, boys or girls? I am so lucky that I get to raise both boys and girls. But without a doubt, my boys are easier. Boys seem to have an even temperament so they simply get on with things and go with the flow. Girls, on the other hand, are incredibly emotional and sensitive. They can go from smiles and giggles to tears and back again in five minutes. To sum up, all the girls in my house, from our nine-week-old baby to myself... high drama.

According to a survey, moms that have three children have higher stress levels than moms with less or more than three... do you agree? Is your stress level lower now that you have six? From personal experience why do you think this is? Honestly, three children, as opposed to six, sounds like a breeze. On school mornings I only have three at home while the other three are at school and that is my time to relax and get things done until the rest of my troop bombard my house again. For the rest of the day, I have six little ones conjuring up mischievous plans, six little ones to cry and six little ones needing nappy changes. Imagine trying to take six young children to get a milkshake — it is serious chaos. It is stressful, but there are so many positives to having a big family; my children are never bored and they always have someone to play with.

Number one coping mechanism when times get really tough? Wine, spa, salon, best friend, granny etc... My husband and I try to have a date night every second week, which I love. It’s a time when we can gather ourselves and really connect as a couple. It’s one of the few times in my week when I can feel and act like an adult. But, as you can imagine, not many people are willing to babysit six little children, so babysitters are hard to find and keep. Our date night isn’t just for us but for our children as well; we work hard at our marriage relationship because we believe that one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the confidence of knowing that mom and dad love each other. When you have kids, there comes a time when your kids do something that makes the sleepless nights and lack of time for yourself all worth it — what was yours? Life does get tiring and difficult at times, but every day each of my children give me so many reasons to remind me how incredibly blessed I am. Malakai wakes

me up by stroking my face and saying, “You are pretty, Mommy” — there is no better way to wake up. Zac has the funniest expressions that keep us in stitches, while Cale has the cutest giggle. Piper gives the best hugs and has the biggest smile which makes my heart sing. Levi has just started walking and I get excited every time I see him wobbling around. I love sitting with Snow, gazing into her little face and cuddling her for as long as I can. There are some really tough days, but each of our children gives me a reason to not only keep going, but to love my life. Do you think it’s possible for moms of four to six children to still have a fulltime job? Oh, my! For me, being a mom of six little ones is a full-time job and an incredible one at that! My husband and I have chosen to sacrifice a lot so that our children can have a stay-at-home mom, and I am so grateful we have made that decision. But one huge thing I have learnt from being a mom, is to never judge any other mom or family. What works for me, might not work in another home. So, another mom might be able to work and have six little ones to come home to, but that just isn’t for our family. Best mommy moment ever? For me, the most precious moments often happen right under our noses without us even noticing. My best moments are in the evenings, watching Kent and the children playing rugby on the lounge floor. It is mayhem — loud, full of giggles and inevitably ends in tears, which is when mom steps in. The children then curl up on the couch with me to watch Curious George and cuddle, the favourite part of my day. I get my best mommy moment every day!

As a mom of many, what do you feel causes you the most stress, i.e. husband or the fact that you only have two hands? For me, dinnertime causes the most stress. It’s the time of day when I don’t

Heart of a womAn Through the ages women have come to be known as the paradigms of virtue and philanthropic activity. We have seen some amazing empowering and generous women come into this world and make a difference teaching those on their way that it really is better to give then to receive, that to do unto others as you would have them do unto you is not just a saying but a way of life – as the inspirational and virtuous mother Teresa once said “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”

With these wise words in mind we thought about the amazing women in Ballito and surrounds who have given up their time in order to help those less fortunate, and delve into what simply is best known as THE HEART of a woman!!! Meet some of Ballito’s Mother Teresa’s...

n Smith lage Name Joa r of LIV Vil e d n u o f n Co Occupatio Village Cause LIV Tell us a little bit about where your heart lies? What causes are you involved with and why? My husband, Tich Smith, and I started the LIV Children’s Village to help rescue and restore vulnerable and orphaned children in our province. Our passion is to see these children, who have been abused and neglected, be able to develop to their full potential in a safe, loving environment. Why did you choose this specific area to be involved in and why? In 2001, I heard about the starving children in the Amaoti township on the border of Phoenix and wanted to help. A group of ladies from our church and I began to feed them sandwiches. Once you go out and see the enormity of the problem in our province, you cannot remain in the comfort of your home and do nothing. There are over five million orphans in our country, with more than 12 000 being orphaned every month. KZN is the epicentre of this problem and it will become ungovernable for the generations to come if we don’t all become part of the solution. I truly

50 |

believe that as business, government and the church, along with other concerned ordinary people like me, working together we can change our nation if we all do what we are able to do. What exactly do you do to help? We purchased a 31-hectare farm in Cottonlands, Verulam, where we have built 96 houses which will be home to over 700 children. Each home will have a mother and six to eight children. We have also started our own school. We work closely with child welfare organizations and the Department of Social Development. Our vision is to give each child holistic residential care with the core vision to rescue them and restore their lives with the help of social workers, psychologists and counsellors, raising future leaders who will have a positive impact in our society. How can people in Ballito help you? We need to raise R1 000 a month per child to run this first village. We believe that we can teach all children who have, to give

to those who don’t have. Imagine if every child had a “LIV the change” moneybox and saved even R10 a month — together these children would be able to feed and clothe every LIV child. We could become a province that looks after its children. What are the specific needs in the area you help in? We need children’s clothes, sports equipment, bicycles that your children have outgrown, your time to come and volunteer, your expertise and general financial assistance. Words of wisdom for those who don’t think they can do anything? It takes ordinary women, working together, to do extraordinary things. If we all focus on living a life of significance (what can we do for others), look at what we have in our hands, and do what we are able to do, no matter how little, we can change our province, one child at a time and leave a legacy of hope and peace for future generations.

Owen st Name Paula and foremo other first M n o ti pa u c Oc hill House r of Summer and Directo erhill House Cause Summ Tell us a little bit about where your heart lies? What causes are you involved with and why? I have had a soft spot for children all my life and growing up, it was a given that I wanted to have children of my own and to work in some capacity with children. This led to a desire and calling to start my own children’s charity to build homes and create a sense of family for orphaned and vulnerable children, as well as to help to transform the community at large. Why did you choose the specific area to be involved in? Disadvantaged communities as a whole, let alone the children that live in them, do not have much of a voice, so we have chosen one area to work in so as to truly dig deep into the children’s lives and expect real transformation. The community we work in is called Etete (Ward 7) Kwadukuza. According to statistics, in Kwadukuza alone last year there were roughly 3500 orphaned/ abandoned children and there were no officially registered children’s homes (like Summerhill) in the area. We chose Etete as it lies geographically between Ballito and Stanger and has to date received very little upliftment in any form. What exactly do you do to help? that, we have worked extensively for five years with Child Welfare and our future “neighbours”. We currently run a kids club, a ladies sewing group, holiday feeding programmes, supply monthly food parcels to child-headed households, provide schooling for five children, plus the opportunity to go on holiday camps. What can people in Ballito do to help you? Because this year is our building year, we are looking for donations from the building industry or expertise from individuals/ businesses when it comes to: fencing/ roofing/electrical/plumbing/solar heating/ landscaping, etc. We have been supported very generously by Palm Lakes, Sagnelli, GOBA and Debonairs. We are also very fortunate to have 007 Plant Hire & Earthworks generously donating our bulk earthworks, as well as Sembcorp’s TLB to assist us. We will start building soon. Apart from that, we need volunteers to help one afternoon a week at our kids club. What are the specific needs in the area you help in? Food! (Especially during the winter), medication for ringworm and worms and we never say no to clothes/crockery/ bedding, etc which we distribute according to specific needs/sizes. Words of wisdom for those who don’t think that they can do anything? With God, ALL things are possible!

Forrest Marc Name Lesley eeper, wife to k k o o B n o kids Occupati e gorgeous re th to m o m Forrest and 153 n io Cause Vis Tell us a little bit about where your heart lies? What causes are you involved with and why? I am involved with the NPO, Vision153 World Fundraising House, which focuses mainly on reaching and caring for widows and orphans in our local community. Why did you choose the specific area to be involved in? Why? Well, it’s pretty simple — it’s a biblical principal and we are a Christianbased NPO. We currently feed upward of 350 children per day, provide them with clothing and various other basic necessities. Under this umbrella, my heart lies with the smaller children, I cannot understand how it is possible for an adult to neglect, abuse or abandon a child. I become brave, fierce and protective inside when I am dealing with underprivileged children who have not asked to be born into this world. I feel at a fundamental level that we can make a difference, even if it is to only one child and this stirs my soul and stretches my faith. What exactly do you do to help? Within the scope of our NPO, we all have

clear-cut functions based on our talents — my beautiful mom is the hands and feet of the organization and the one who is out there daily, feeding the masses. My amazing brother, Roy Primmer, heads up the corporate side of things and my precious hubby, Marc Forrest, handles all things IT… social media, web, graphics and so on. I handle the financials and fundraising, do a very amateur job with the photography and spearhead the annual Ballito Blanket Drive and we all assist my mom wherever it is needed. What can people in Ballito do to help you? People in Ballito can get involved by following our Facebook page (vision153), subscribing to our newsletter (www.vision153.co.zo) or get in touch directly on info@vision153.co.za so that we can discuss areas that touch individual people’s hearts and assist them in getting involved in those areas. ALSO: keep an eye out for our annual fundraiser coming up in September. We will again be collaborating with Sugarrush and it’s going to be a whole bunch of fun. We’d LOVE your support.

What are the specific needs in the area you help in? We have many needs. Meat is always in short supply. Nappies too. We are always in need of staples: rice, mielie meal, sugar and so on. Getting on board when the fundraiser is advertised will also go a long way to helping financially. Words of wisdom for those who don’t think they can do anything? Keep on loving each other, don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers and remember those being mistreated around you as if their pain were your own. Don’t chase money, be satisfied with what you have and give honour to God in all things, because He said, “I will never fail you, I will never abandon you”. So, in knowing that God is your helper, you will acquire a quiet confidence where you can step out into the unknown and be the difference you always wanted to see.

Elmes Name Lindy Studio , nails at KL er n w O n o Occupati s ve Beginning Cause Positi Tell us a little bit about where your heart lies? What causes are you involved with and why? My heart goes out to anything small and helpless. When I had my babies, I had everything I needed and I wanted to be able to share some of that with the less fortunate in order to help them bring their babies into the world with hope. I heard about the dire state of affairs at Stanger Hospital, so I knitted a few items and went off to visit the maternity ward. I was devastated to see how little, if indeed anything, these women had for their babies and how great the need was and this formed the foundations for the charity, Positive Beginnings. Why did you choose that specific area to be involved in and why? I chose Stanger Maternity Hospital as I wanted to help the community right here on our doorstep. I also wanted to be personally involved, so by choosing Stanger Hospital I could do this and also personally manage the charity. What exactly do you do to help? The goal is to collect new and used baby items, such as any clothing from 0 to 6 months, blankets, nappies, vaseline, baby powder, soap, bum cream, waterproofs, baby lotion, sanitary pads, wet wipes, etc, etc. These items are put into new-born baby packs, with each pack containing sufficient clothing to last at least a week. Once the bags have been packed with these clothes, plus some of the baby essentials (listed above), we take the bags (approximately 60 per visit) and I, with the help of Lisa Opperman, hand them out to each mom.

special packs to bless them, consisting of a blanket and some personal toiletries. How can people in Ballito help you? I would like to encourage the whole community to assist in this very worthy cause, especially any moms who may have used baby clothes they want to clear. We are very willing to help them spring-clean their cupboards! Any baby items, such as prams, camp cots, etc are very welcome. If you’re out shopping, by simply adding baby soap or powder to your trolley, you will truly be blessing a little life. Positive Beginnings has given many people the opportunity to be a blessing by donating items, sewing clothes, knitting booties, blankets and jerseys. “When you refresh others, God refreshes you!” What are the specific needs in the area you help in? Positive Beginnings’ vision and goal is to have New-Born Baby Packs for every baby born at Stanger Hospital and hopefully to encourage more New-Born Baby outreaches to many other clinics and hospitals throughout KZN and South Africa, so that many, many babies can start their lives with a Positive Beginning. Words of wisdom for those who don’t think that they can do anything? For those who don’t think that they can do anything, it’s never too late and there is always a need. Start by supporting the first charity you see. Your R5 DOES make a difference. Help where you can with what you have. Every one soap given makes up part of the pack. By giving you receive more, but give with your heart.

We also offer prayer and support to women who have lost their babies and we make

DIY spa remedies Women spend countless rands every month in the pursuit of perfection! Rejuvenating facials, spa treatments, expensive creams, scrubs and pills that are all supposed to make you feel and look 10 years younger, but never really deliver on their promises. What we tend to forget, however, is that women back in the day didn’t have all these things to help them — they had to turn to Mother Nature and use things that come from the earth, all of which are still found in each and every one of our fridges. From hair to face, body and feet, they relied on home recipes that were not only cost effective, but devoid of harsh chemicals. They did it au naturel and looked great because of it. So, in the spirit of Women’s Month and the inexorable credit crunch, we have decided to include a few pampering recipes that you can spoil yourself with at home! Hot Olive Oil Hair Treatment Getting rid of straw-like locks has never been this cheap and easy! Being a natural conditioner, olive oil has the ability to seep deep into hair strands and moisturizes dull, dry and frizzy hair from within. You will need a bottle of cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil or just use virgin olive oil. Put some olive oil in a microwave-proof bowl and heat it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Using your finger tips, massage the oil gently into your hair and scalp, starting from the roots and going all the way down to the tips. Cover your head with a shower cap and wrap your head with a towel and wait for the oil to penetrate in for 30 minutes before you wash it off — you’ll probably need at least two washes to rinse it all off. Wash your hair with cold water and then lather with regular shampoo and rinse. Now squirt some more shampoo on your hair, lather and wait for three minutes for the shampoo to penetrate well. Rinse off with cold water and apply a good conditioner. For best results let you hair air dry.

Hair Care

Avocado and Aloe Vera Take a few avocados, ripe banana and olive oil. Mix them well in a container and apply for about 15-20 minutes. Wash the hair with lukewarm water. This mixture not only repairs the hair, but restores it effectively.

Banana Packs Mash two or three bananas, depending on the length of the hair, and add beaten curd to it. Blend the mixture well in a container. Apply this paste to your hair from root to tip. Wait for 15 minutes and then rinse your hair with a mild shampoo. You’ll be surprised by the massive change in your hair’s texture! Coconut Oil Massage A simple oil massage is all it takes to infuse some body into lifeless hair! Take coconut oil and add crushed almonds and lemon juice. Warm the contents a little and massage into the scalp. Cover the head with a warm towel for about half an hour and then wash the hair. The result will be smooth, shiny and beautiful hair!

Egg Massage Separate the white and yolk of an egg and beat both of them separately. Add some water to the yolk and blend it till it becomes creamy. Now add the white of the egg to it. Wet your hair with warm water and massage with this mixture. After some time, rinse thoroughly with normal water.

Ballito Health and beauty Feature Garlic Remove the skin from a few cloves of fresh garlic and blend the cloves in a blender and then strain the juice through a strainer. Dip a cotton ball in the juice and dab it on the age spots. Apply the juice twice a day for a period of two months. (You might not want to go out in public for a little while after this!)

Age Spot Remedies Lemons The citric acid in lemon juice helps in fading age spots. Squeeze a lemon to extract the juice. Soak a cotton ball in the lemon juice and dab it on the age spots. Leave it for 30 minutes or overnight. Apple Cider Vinegar Take three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a mugful of water. Drink this twice a day for a period of two months. The age spots will start to fade and also give the skin a new, glowing look. You can sweeten the drink by adding a tablespoon of honey. Red Onion Slice a red onion and rub it on the age spots. Do this daily and it will help in fading your age spots.

Peppermint Lavender Foot Bath You will need five drops of peppermint oil, ½ a cup of Epsom Salts, three drops of lavender oil and three drops of tea tree oil. Put all the ingredients in a foot bath filled with hot water and soak your feet in it for 10-15 minutes. You can even add some of the mixture to your moisturizer and massage your feet with it for extra effect.

Detox Foot Bath Recipes Chamomile Tea Foot Bath You will need 1/8 of a cup of parsley (dried), four bags of Chamomile Tea, four drops of any essential oil. Add all ingredients to a tub of hot water. Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes and then soak your feet.

Remove water from heat and allow it to infuse for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid into a foot bath and let it cool for four minutes. Add the tee tree essential oil and then soak your feet in this bath for 20 minutes with a towel over your feet and the tub.

Oatmeal Face Pack Make a face pack with one tablespoon of oatmeal, one tablespoon of honey, and one tablespoon of lemon juice. Apply the mixture to your face and allow it to dry for four to five minutes. When you start to feel your face tightening, rinse it off.

Clay Pack Mix two tablespoons of green clay with two drops of lemon juice, one tablespoon of honey, one tablespoon of plain yoghurt and two drops of lavender oil. Add rosewater to the mixture to make a paste. Apply the paste all over the face and neck, avoiding the skin around the eyes. Let it dry and then rinse with lukewarm water. Your skin will feel super-fresh after this home treatment.

Face Wash Brown Sugar Oil Scrub Add one tablespoon of oil and two tablespoons dark brown sugar to a bowl and mix thoroughly. Apply the mixture to your face and massage in using circular motions. Leave for a few minutes and wash off. Your skin should look silky and glowing afterwards. Oatmeal Face Care Add half a cup of oatmeal and two tablespoons of plain yoghurt to a medium-sized bowl and stir well. Apply mixture to face for a minimum of 10 minutes. Wash the mixture off with a gentle soap.

Cranberry Wash Heat half a cup of water. Once the water starts to boil you can remove from stove. Add dried savoy eaves to the water and leaves for minimum of 15 minutes and then strain the water, keeping the strained water. Puree a half a cup of cranberries, strain and retain the liquid. Mix the strained savoy water and the strained cranberry mixture. Soak a few cotton pads in the liquid for a few seconds and then press against your face. Leave them on your face for about five minutes, and then rinse your face with warm water.

Salon Kerry Lee

T

he career of Durban girl, Kerry Lee, began 25 years ago when she commenced training with Terry Scott. It was at his salon that she learnt all the tricks of the trade from the person she considers to be one of the best hairstylists around. After her studies she relocated to Scotland, where she opened her own salon and it was in Scotland that she learned a lot of the different techniques which she still uses today. Kerry returned to SA in 2009 and chose to make her home in Ballito, where she opened her salon three years ago. Her salon is very relaxing and the staff really make you feel at home. What makes Kerry Lee Salon unique is that she offers pensioners’ prices every day and that there is a lovely kids’ play area — there is even wine on offer for afternoon clients. She also has a bikini shop upstairs, so while you wait for your colour and foils,

64 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

you can go up and find a stunning bikini imported from Bangkok.

Kerry assessed my hair, asked about my likes and dislikes and then advised me as to what would suit me. As I love dark and light contrast in my hair, she advised me to keep my natural hair colour and place blonde foils strategically to get the right look. She made completing the foils seem effortless and, before I knew it, she was all done while I was still happily enjoying a delicious cappuccino. Going to the hairdresser is my favourite pastime and the most relaxing time for me, so I was in heaven. Kerry then went on to cut and style my hair, creating a great new look to suit my new colour. She was also very helpful and gave me many tips on styling my hair, including how to get it straight with a paddle brush in just three minutes. I definitely have to try this out!

Kerry Lee’s Salon offers cuts, colour, blow waves, perms, extensions and the famed Brazilian blow wave that straightens your hair, gets rid of the frizz and conditions the hair to leave it silky smooth. Hairdressing is her passion and she cannot imagine running her salon anywhere else but in Ballito. She loves this small town...

I was very impressed with Kerry Lee. She gave me a vibrant new look, which I love. I would really recommend her salon — pop in and enjoy the pampering!

Lasersure

V

isiting Lasersure is always a treat and each time I am surprised at the truth about cosmetic treatments — what you think you know is not always the case. The results, however, are always fantastic! At Lasersure the standards are very high. The premises are always perfectly clean and tidy, it is beautifully decorated and you always feel right at home. This is not your standard beauty salon; here they focus on aesthetics and their treatments are not just superficial but focussed on getting to the deeper layers of your skin and bringing out the best of what lies beneath the surface. With their extensive knowledge, they really can make a huge difference to your skin and, whether you have problem areas or just want a pamper, they ensure that each client gets the best results with a suitable facial. I had a Deep Cleanse, Microdermabrasion and the Growth Factor mask. My favourite is still the Microdermabrasion. Though not a hands-on treatment, the device removes the uppermost layer of dead cells and leaves the skin radiant. There is no discomfort and it is an interesting experience as little aluminium oxide crystals are blown and then vacuumsuctioned away all at the same time. It is a fantastic exfoliating treatment that left my skin feeling fantastic and

clean! After that a customised Growth Factor mask was applied and I enjoyed a foot massage while the mask did its magic on my skin. The treatment leaves your complexion balanced, healthy and glowing. I really loved this treatment but, thinking back, I still love the combination of microdermabrasion and the revitalising Guinot hydradermie treatments — that combo really does a lot for a facial “glow”.

not a product with permanent effect. Did you know Botox was initially meant for other medical conditions, like relaxing spastic muscles in children with physical abnormalities, I guess this goes to show how safe it is. The Dr’s ensure that the procedure is practically painless with minimal discomfort. Results can be seen in as little as 3 - 7 days, though at 2 weeks you will see best results.

Lasersure also focusses on aesthetic beauty treatments, with a range of treatments available. While I was asking about these treatments, I was impressed to hear that only qualified doctors perform these procedures. Although doctors study to be general practitioners, some go on to specialise in a specific field (like orthopaedic surgery, for example, and those who wish to focus on aesthetic beauty treatments go on to further studies to qualify in this specialised field, so your face is in good and qualified hands!

Lasersure is all about offering quality, safe and successful treatments. They do, however, stress that following post-treatment advice is key to achieving the best results.

There is quite a stigma around these types of treatments, but I was quite surprised to learn that it isn’t age or gender specific. Genetically some people are more prone to specific facial lines (e.g. frown lines), so using Botox at an early age will drastically reduce formation of deeper, permanent lines. Botox only relaxes the muscle and therefore needs to be repeated every 3 - 4 months as it is

Ballito Ballito Restaurant review

Words Justin Scott

Rain Farm W

e took a short drive out of Ballito to the Rain Farm Game Lodge recently to try a dinner experience that isn’t right on our doorstep and found that it was definitely worth the distance and to be recommended. The restaurant is open seven days a week and caters for both guests at the lodge and visitors like us.

We were given the choice of sitting on the wide, open patio overlooking the pool and distant hills illuminated by the light of the full moon or to eat inside under the restaurant’s cosy thatch roof, with a warm fire crackling in the background — a tough call, but we opted for inside on this occasion. Either way, the setting was just the start of an evening of good, tasty food and a really great time connecting with the family. The restaurant is well able cater for either a romantic couple looking for a quiet, intimate dinner, or a big family with kids looking to have fun, laugh and enjoy a good meal — all that is needed is a quick booking beforehand and the rest is handled for you. The service throughout the evening was faultless and our waiter allowed us space and time to laugh and chat between courses while still remaining close at hand to take orders for drinks and keep the service flowing. Recommendations were good when we needed help in deciding on menu choices and during the evening we even had a visit from the Head Chef, Sean Sawrathan, to check that everything was in order. The choice of starters from the set menu was more than ample and we had the Smooth Butternut Soup, the tasty Tomato and Basil soup and a personal favourite, the Mussels and Prawns in Garlic and White Wine — a delicious dish and memorable starter. When it came to mains, our favourites were the tantalizing Rump Steak served with Vegetables and the soft, melt-in-your-mouth Lamb Curry, which can be prepared to your choice of spicy heat. The kitchen is able to prepare a variety of other dishes, including veal or scrumptious stuffed chicken breasts, to name a few. Chef Sean’s love for cooking shines through in his dishes and he is always keen to try and accommodate special requests or something slightly different. We finished off a really great evening with the signature Chocolate Brownies which are really, really, really amazing and deliver a taste of chocolate heaven to your mouth! We also tried the Banoffee Pie and had to stop our daughter from ordering a second one — which speaks for itself. A quick cappuccino topped off a superb evening at the Rain Farm Game Lodge and we’re certain that we’ll be back soon.

Art that speaks a thousand words The Imbizo Art Gallery invites you to come and discover yourself in the fine art on display As you stroll through the vibrant Lifestyle Centre in Ballito, past the Mugg & Bean and just opposite Zaras Café, you are greeted by massive canvasses hung against wooden pillars. Landscapes, portraits, flowers, abstract shapes and nature draw you into another world, where the artist invites you to discover your inner self. This is the enthralling, absorbing effect that the Imbizo Art Gallery has on the people passing by, who suddenly pause to fall under the spell of the artists’ brush-strokes. The Imbizo Art Gallery opened its doors in December 2008 to welcome not only art-lovers, but all the people of the North Coast to admire and experience some of the finest art on display in KwaZulu-Natal. The word “imbizo” is the Zulu word for a gathering, a celebration or, in this case, a coming together of friendship, soul and spirit. Owner and curator, Isabel Roos, opened the Imbizo Art Gallery with the vision of it becoming the warm, friendly meeting place for artists and the public alike that it is today. Isabel is very selective about the works she buys, as art is something she has to believe in. Some of the top artists’ works that people can come and discover in the gallery include those of Derric van Rensburg, Jan Vermeiren, Hannetjie de Clercq, Tay Dall, Katherine Wood,

Salomi Prinsloo, Llewellyn Davies and the German/South African duo known as Mpenja. People can also expect to see work by an ever-growing number of upcoming artists, photographers and sculptors on display in the gallery. Isabel says that people on the North Coast are spoiled with an abundance of sea, rivers and the beautiful coastal forests and therefore, most homeowners in the area focus on minimalist interiors in acknowledgement to nature’s supremacy. “Clients prefer to have fewer decorative pieces and rather focus on bringing nature into their homes. It is so important to pay attention to detail and carefully select art to give it a proper place in your homes,” she says. Art is your personal footprint — it conveys who you are and the Imbizo Art Gallery provides you with a complete art experience — from sourcing to commissioning, framing and hanging. To echo the words of Picasso, the Imbizo Art Gallery exhibits art that turns a simple abstract shape or colour into something meaningful in the eye of the beholder. It is something life-changing that needs to be experienced.

Crayfish Inn We were very excited to visit the Crayfish Inn Restaurant as we have lived in Ballito for eight years but have never been there. The restaurant is full of old-world charm, with an intimate, candle-lit setting. Banana, who seems to be well-known and has been at the restaurant for a long time, was a great waiter. After looking through the menu, we made our choices and started with Lobster Bisque Soup, Calamari Tubes and Cheesy Prawn Tails, with the prawn tails turning out to be our best starter. This dish was divine — six prawns smothered in a cheesy garlic sauce and served with bread on the side to soak up all the sauce. The lobster bisque was tasty with a nice thick consistency.

When it came to our main courses, the Steak with Mushroom Sauce was yum; the 10 Grilled Queen Prawns were really worth the price and perfectly grilled; this is the Crayfish Inn so we could not leave without trying out the restaurant’s name sake and although the Grilled Crayfish with Lemon Butter Sauce was delish, I now know that 300g is way too small a portion. As it is a rather expensive item, I should probably have changed my choice. On reflection, the Seafood Platter special looked amaxing and probably would have been a far better option for both cost and portion size. The kiddies menu is also just perfect for what the little ones need.

The Chocolate Cake for dessert was a very good choice and the Deep-fried Ice Cream was also a very yummy dessert with a difference. The Crayfish Inn is perfect for a slow and relaxed dinner and is also perfectly suited to a romantic dinner for two. The Crayfish Inn is situated in the tower above the pool at La Montagne Hotel.

Celebrating Women this Women’s Month

A

ugust is Women’s Month, a month during which women are celebrated for all the incredible things past generations have overcome and for all that women have accomplished. August 9 is National Women’s Day and to honour all women in South Africa, I would like to quote Mahatma Ghandi. “Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacity... If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man’s superior... If non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with women...”

So, in true female style, let’s take a candid look at why, in fact, “woman is immeasurably man’s superior” and “the future is with women”. I did a little research and amongst reasons like “women make better bosses” and “women evolve hotter”, here are a couple things to think about as you celebrate the women in your life. Women communicate better. Yes, this is probably the most amusing difference between men and women and, proving the truth of this, the results of a gender study showed that women speak about 25 000

words per day whereas men utter only 12 000 words per day. Women can talk for hours over brunch, discussing all the latest news and social gossip and, when it comes to sorting out an issue at home or work, well, that’s where the next point comes in...

Women are more in tune with their emotions. Now I use the word “more” here because, don’t get me wrong, men are also able to speak about their stuff, BUT it is more likely that women will address emotional turmoil before men will. Another statistic shows that 53 percent of women talk about what is bothering them as opposed to 29 percent of men. Women will talk out their differences before throwing a punch — as Ghandi says, “if non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with women”. Women have a higher IQ than men. Researcher James Flynn collated results from around the world and, yes, it is true, women rank higher in the IQ stakes. This doesn’t necessarily mean that women are harder-working, but at the core of genetics, there lies the truth. Women are GREAT at multi-tasking. Ever watched your mother or wife answer the

phone while packing away groceries, switching on the oven, sending a couple of last-minute e-mails, all while having a perfectly coherent conversation? A study was done at the University of Hertfordshire where the results proved that 70 percent of women were better at multi-tasking than the men in the group. The women were able to take a step back and plan their approach much better than the men could, a quality that is highly admired in women.

Women live longer. According to the New England Centenarian Study, women generally live five to 10 years longer than men. This study also shows that amongst the world’s population, 85 percent of those who are over 100 years old are women. Some might even say that women are a great investment. Ghandi’s wise words have set the tone for decades around discussions about gender and power, but today, as you read this light-hearted play on words, let us take a moment to be serious and celebrate women — not only for these reasons, but for the many reasons that go unnoticed every day.

WEIGHT MYTHS

DEBUNKED

Being a fitness consultant is hugely rewarding and, to be honest, quite entertaining! I get to help so many clients achieve their personal best whilst hopefully educating them on their health and fitness path for life but, having worked mostly with women through my years as a fitness consultant, I’m often bemused by the comments, beliefs and stories I get to hear! I’d like to set the record straight on a few of the myths which seem to have a way of doing the rounds at book clubs, ladies lunches and at the hairdresser. No matter what I do, I always seem to lose weight off my face and chest first! No you don’t. We’re born with a certain number of fat cells and, although we can alter the size of these cells, there is little we can do to affect the number of fat cells we have. The only time fat cells proliferate is during the last trimester of pregnancy, the first year of life, puberty and in obesity. So genetically you may have inherited more fat cells around your stomach and chest and less on your legs. Or perhaps your fat cells have perched themselves on your buttocks and thighs (thanks to Mum) and the weight only seems to come off your upper body. The truth is that when you lose weight, each and every fat cell, from your baby toe to the top of your head, decreases at the same level. As sure as nuts, I just have to eat a big meal and the next day I’ve gained two kilograms! The body simply does not agree with you on this thought! Psychologically you may feel bloated and lethargic after having indulged in a big meal the previous evening, but with regard to weight gain, it’s the big picture that counts here. Your metabolism will, in fact, elevate itself temporarily to deal with the onslaught of excess calories and, provided you balance your diet out over the next few meals, your weight will remain stable. Gaining excess weight depends more on your eating and exercise plan over a period of a few weeks, rather than one meal. For this reason, many fitness experts advocate having a

74 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

cheat day once a week, which is good for the soul without harming the body.

The truth about your metabolism. Our bodies burn fat in three ways — the thermic effect of feeding (TEF), resting metabolic rate and our level of activity. The thermic effect of feeding accounts for about 10 percent of calories burnt and is the process of eating, digesting and assimilating our food, so there is little we can do to alter this. The resting metabolic rate accounts for about 60 – 75 percent of calories burnt. Even when you’re at rest, your body needs energy for all its “hidden” functions, such as breathing, circulating blood, adjusting hormone levels and growing and repairing cells. However, a fit, lean body will burn fat nine times faster at rest than an unfit body, proving we that do have the ability to alter this aspect of our metabolism. Physical activity is by far the most variable of the factors that determine how many calories you burn each day. Strenuous exercise is the best thing to do when you’re stressed! Yes and no to this statement! Yes, if you’re slightly stressed, lethargic and feeling a little low. Nothing will sort this out better than an intense bout of exercise. However, if you’re highly stressed, not sleeping well, feeling anxious and have on-going stress, then chances are that you have elevated levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Continuous elevated levels of cortisol will lead to higher insulin levels, causing a raging appetite, typically for sweets and fatty foods. Elevated cortisol also piles on the calories and typically stores them in fat cells in the tummy for further use. In addition, it causes a drop in the brain chemical, serotonin, leading to depression, irritability, and cravings. If the latter describes you, you really are better off going for a long walk or doing less intense exercise, taking a stretch or yoga class and making a concerted effort to manage your stress. This way you’ll keep your cortisol levels in check.

Ballito property

Looking Back

With Tim Johnson Tim Johnson is the son of Jane Matkovich and Grandson of Rosematy Ladlau. Sales Director for Seeff Dolphin Coast

To make things even stranger, the word “Ballito” was jokingly translated as the Italian word meaning “little ball”, which of course is not correct at all. The developers may have got away with the made-up explanation for the name if they were referring to the beach ball in their original adverts, was it not for the fact that is was actually borrowed from a glossy advert for ‘Ballito Hosiery’ made by Ballito Hosiery Limited of St. Albans, England. With seemingly no rhyme or reason to the name, the town was born and the rest, as they say, is history.

T

he Dolphin Coast has a very colourful history full of interesting characters, businesses and landmark’s that have left their mark on the area and moulded it into what it is today. I often find myself reflecting on what it was like to grow up in a supposed backwater resort town without so much as a traffic light, franchise takeaway outlet, retail shopping centre, or any other ‘modern’ amenity that any self-respecting town would have in this day and age. As much as it may sound like we were completely neglected by development and that we led a somewhat boring existence, this could not be further from the truth. We certainly appreciated the simple things a lot more back then, and I remember the 80’s and 90’s not only for luminous sunglasses, Doc Martins and reversible jackets, but for the fun we had and the close community we were a part of. It might interest many readers to know that the town of Ballito actually has a very quirky past, and a very interesting story behind its name. The town was established in 1954 as a private township by the Glen Anil Development Corporation. The advertising slogan was, “Buy, Build & Play at Ballito Bay, The Caribbean of the North Coast - Natal”.

I thought I would take you back to the not so distant past to paint a picture of what it was like to live and grow up in the area before anyone thought it was necessary to construct a national highway so far north. If you want to know if someone is truly a local you only need to ask two questions. Did you watch a movie at the Ballito Drive-In and did you used to frequent the Ballito ‘Waterworld’? As strange as it may seem to many people, both of these destinations were around in my early existence and played a big part in the recreational offering that our holiday destination could boast. To begin with, the Drive-In was a little less part of my childhood, but very much part of my parents’. It seems the heyday was in the 70’s and I know that it was “the place” to go for any love sick local. It used to be located in and around the vicinity of the current Ballito Bay Mall and in fact the current BP service station is actually called Drive-In Motors which is a reference to the old landmark The ‘Waterworld’ was situated on Ocean Drive just below Barrington. There are currently a number of complexes on the old site, but back in the 80’s it was an absolute favourite on hot summer’s days. I distinctly remember clambering up the stairs to the top of the main slide, showing my rubber band as proof of payment and zipping down the blue half

pipe. Admittedly this attraction was only really busy during the December holidays, but an awesome memory nonetheless. You have to remember that back in the 80’s and 90’s we were perceived to live in the sticks. Durban was a place that we only went to once a month to do a ‘big shop’, or once a year to enjoy the annual Pantomime at the Playhouse Opera Theatre. On special occasions I recall being told to bath and get changed into my pyjamas with my siblings and we’d head off to Tongaat to buy KFC. A family bucket and 1l Coke later and we were headed back to the farm in our Ford station wagon. How things have changed. So with all the exciting shops and restaurants so far away, you can imagine the excitement that any new retailer opening in the area brought to the local population. One of the most memorable grand openings was that of the Spur on the ground floor next to the well-established Mariners restaurant (now Crawdaddy’s). The queues of patrons lined up around the block and it became very difficult to differentiate between adults and children with all the overexcitement! Never had Ballito been so privileged to welcome such an established and household SA brand. The Spur was followed by a Panarotti’s directly above it (now Shakers) and this took locals into fever pitch. The floodgates had seemingly opened and it wasn’t long before we were shopping at exotic stores such as CNA and Scotts, and partaking in fine dining at Debonairs and Steers. We had truly arrived on the national stage and shopping centres and other developments were now a real possibility. I’m amazed every day at the growth and plans for this North Coast area and look forward to seeing what the future holds for us, but let’s spare a thought for some of the people and landmarks that have shaped the area into what it is today.
