PUBLISHER Lorinda Scott | lorinda@fabmags.co.za

editors note This edition of The Ballito magazine is truly a celebration of our amazing women on the North Coast and lines up with the observance of Women’s Day in August. Our salute and the homage paid to women and the role that they play, as well as their impact on the community, echoes the courage and determination of the 20,000 women who marched on the Union Buildings in Pretoria in 1956. Those women had vision, passion and a determination to secure the type of lives they wanted for themselves, their families and the people of our country — they had courage and they wanted to make a difference, and our women of the North Coast are no different. From enterprising businesswomen starting new, pioneering businesses on the coast, to those who have put in the hard work and are forging ahead, we are inspired when we hear their stories and get an idea of how they succeed in juggling work, life and family and in keeping the balance. Doctors, musicians, makeup artists, dancers, entrepreneurs and fashion designers — all of them are profiled in this edition as we celebrate women. Each story in this edition is special to us, but one that stands out is that of the winner of the fashion design competition at Coastal Living Bru. Genevieve Daw’s passion in

chasing a dream and making it work was recently rewarded when she won the fashion design competition held at La Montagne as part of Coastal Living Bru and, together with that, a fashion shoot in our magazine. Tas A Ver, her fashion design brand, has grown by leaps and bounds and, if you meet Gen, you’ll know why. She exudes energy and excitement and her love of design (she is an interior designer by trade) is tangible as she literally bounces around with excitement. Genevieve’s clothing is the highlight of the fashion spread (check it out) and we had a blast on the beach with her, Karen Landman, Kirsty Turco and Barry Bowditch in putting it all together — it’s a tough life in Ballito!

LG – G3 Smartphone – www.lg.com/za With new smartphones being launched practically every single day, it’s difficult to make your product stand out above the rest. But, amongst all the ‘noise’, you still sometimes find a truly stellar performer. And that’s what the new offering from LG gives us. Most of us would equate the Korean electronics manufacturer with the TVs and DVD players in our lounges but, slowly but surely, they are taking over the coveted smartphone arena with their top-notch devices. The new LG G3 Smartphone tops the list in many departments, but it is the astounding screen, fantastic battery life and stellar performance that makes it stick out. The screen is an amazing crystal-clear Quad HD 2560 x 1440 pixel screen (better than any laptop screen) which allows you to view full HD videos and images without any issues! The 3000 mAh battery will keep your device going for almost two days and the 13MP camera also means that you can take the most amazing photos All in all, the LG G3 comes out tops in most departments, the only con being the size of the phone, which might be a bit too big at 146mm x 74mm. But we’ll look past that for the sheer simplicity and quality of this phone. In our books it’s a definite winner if you’re in the new/ upgrade market for a phone. The LG G3 smartphone will be available in South Africa from the beginning of September.

Smaak™ 9H Tempered Glass Screen Protectors for the Samsung Galaxy S5 and iPhone 5/5s – www.ismaak.com

Despite the millions of different types and brands out there, it’s not often that you get to read a review on a screen protector. BUT… I recently managed to get my hands on an exciting, locally-developed screen protector created by the guys at Smaak™. It blew every single other screen protector out there out of the water. The Smaak™ Tempered Glass Screen Protector is made from 0.3mm 9H tempered glass. It’s up to three times as strong as regular screen protectors and provides maximum protection for your mobile device’s screen. It has an oleophobic coating to protect against oil and water and it has anti-fingerprint properties. The tempered glass is shock-resistant and has rounded edges that fit perfectly on your mobile device’s screen. And, priced at R250, it is a worthwhile investment to stop those nasty spider-web cracks that appear on your phone when it decides to ‘accidently’ meet the ground. They are available for purchase online at http://www. geekshop.co.za. Use the promo code Gadgets&Gizmos when checking out for FREE DELIVERY on this awesome, must-have screen protector.

Ballito My town

Mags Westerhof Even if you didn’t get to see this dynamic, somewhat crazy woman strutting her stuff with her golf club in the recent Ballito Happy video, you probably still know the effervescent Mags Van der Westhuizen, now Mags Westerhof, from her numerous stints on radio, the TV reality series Big Brother and her status as a celeb and socialite. Although her life is now quieter because she is a wife and mom, she still has that infectious energy and enthusiasm that people love. This is Mags’s town and this is what she likes to do in it!

Places to wind down after work and enjoy the sunset: There are three places that I love — Canelands, the Simbithi Country Club and my favourite —my home. We live in a gorgeous setting in Umhlali and I love listening to the sounds of nature as the sun goes down.

Go on a romantic date What’s that? Ha-ha.

Hang out with the girls We seldom all get together for a big bash, but we do get together for spa days. We are spoilt for choice in Ballito with a number of excellent spas, so we round the girls up and head for a day of pampering — it’s unbeatable.

Fave pizza place Definitely got to be La Piazza!

Fave activity on the weekend Family outing: Probably won’t come as much of a The beach. We are big-time beachsurprise to most, but it would definitely goers and the outdoors is a must for us. have to be surfing and fishing — just The beach is right on our doorstep so being outdoors! even through the winter we are there. It was one of the deciding factors when we decided to move here.

Work out/take a walk Definitely the promenade! You cannot beat watching the dolphins, surfers and waves after a hard day’s work — or even to start your day. I often head to the promenade with my phone, listen to music and walk my heart out whilst taking it all in.

Fave activity when the weather is miserable We bake and then we bake some more. Or we will shoot through to Gateway to do those things that we don’t get to do when it’s sunny, or we stay at home and... bake.

Ballito Stuff you should know

The essence of teatime To turn a simple visit from a friend into a formal affair, all that it really takes is the addition of a delicate teacup and saucer — throw in some flowers and a scone and you’ve got a teatime fit for a queen — even a British queen! It is, after all, thanks to the Brits that ‘teatime’ as we know it brings back memories of a bygone era where ‘teatime’ meant tables decked out in the finest linen and silverware and laden with cucumber sandwiches, crumpets, shortbread, etc — and don’t forget a perfect china tea set! But where did the tradition of teatime and all that goes with it actually have its roots? We delve into some interesting facts that you probably didn’t know about teatime.

The etiquette of teatime Never wave or hold your teacup in the air. When not in use, place the teacup back in its saucer. If you are at a buffet tea, hold the saucer in your lap with your left hand and hold the teacup in your right hand. When not in use, place the teacup back in its saucer and hold them in your lap. The only time that a saucer is raised together with the teacup is when one is at a standing reception. Do not stir your tea with your teaspoon in sweeping circular motions. Place your teaspoon at the six o’clock position and softly fold the liquid towards the twelve o’clock position two or three times. Either place the used teaspoon on the side of another plate or ask the server or hostess to remove the spoon from the table. Never leave the spoon in the cup, especially whilst actually drinking your tea. Do not use your tea to wash food down with. Sip, don’t slurp, your tea and swallow before eating.

18 | w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

Fancy a cuppa? Whilst a lot of people think of England as the place in which teatime was first instituted, it wasn’t until the late 1670s that England started importing tea, along with many other South-East Asian and Indian goods. Some believe that the tradition of afternoon tea may actually have been started by the French.

The tea party Although Catherine of Braganza is credited with making tea-drinking fashionable, the taking of tea in the afternoon only developed into a new social custom in the late 1830s and early 1840s. It is said that the tradition of afternoon tea was established by Anne, Duchess of Bedford. She requested that light sandwiches be brought to her in the late afternoon because she had a ‘sinking feeling’ at that time because of the long gap between meals. She began to invite others to join her and thus the tradition was born.

The extended pinkie Ever wondered how the timehonoured custom of extending your pinkie whilst drinking a cuppa came about? The first china tea cups were made without handles so, in order not to spill hot tea on yourself, the proper way to hold the cup was to place your thumb at the 6 o’clock position and your index and middle fingers at the 12 o’clock position, whilst gently raising your pinkie for balance.

Not-so-hightea Ever been to a high-tea in the afternoon for a few finger snacks and, of course, tea? Well, technically, this is not a high-tea at all, but actually a low-tea. Shock! Horror! The Jones’s have been lying to us! High-tea, in fact, pertains to dinner, or the main, hearty meal of the day, whereas low-tea is generally taken at around 4 to 5 p.m in a sitting room with low tables. Other kinds of teatimes — that I had never before heard of — include cream-tea with tea, scones, jam and cream, light-tea with tea, scones and sweets and full-tea with tea, savouries, scones, sweets and dessert.

Ballito Inspiration

By Dylan Jahnig | www.lincchurch.com

3 things that some amazing people taught me I recently had the privilege of travelling to Oz with my family and friends. It had long been a dream in my heart to attend the Hillsong Conference, which takes place in Sydney every year and this year that dream materialised. It’s a pretty crazy story. Hillsong Church, which is only 30 years old, has become one of the top 10 recommended tourist destinations in Australia and annually it now hosts the largest conference on Australian shores, bringing 30,000 people from around the world together. That is an amazing thought right there.

who are reading this article is at, or what your view on church is, but let me say that there is something so special, colourful and contagious about Hillsong Church. I don’t know a person in the world, regardless of religious background, that wouldn’t have incredible things to say about it after being a part of the annual conference or even having attended one of their weekend services. You see, I’ve come to believe a very simple truth, ‘People Make the Place’, and the place that I’m talking about here is made up of the most inspiring people.

Now, let me say that Australia is a truly beautiful country and that I only have good things to say about her. From her white, sandy beaches to her breath-taking views from the regular outcrops of land, with vertical cliffs which drop into the clear, blue oceans, Australia really is a beautiful place. The people are amazing too. Their humour had me in hysterics and their light-hearted banter and jovial spirit left me feeling really refreshed and committed to never taking myself too seriously.

I believe that there is always something that we can learn from people, even if we don’t agree with everything that they have to say, and so here is my take on three simple characteristics that makes Hillsong Church a special place. My hope, of course, is that we would take these to heart and consider what it would be like to live them out in our lives in order to make our communities and churches special, colourful and ‘contagious’ places.

I could say so much more about the country and her people, but first I wanna turn my attention to what was, hands down, the highlight of our trip — Hillsong Church. I’m not sure where the faith of those of you

20 | w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

Their people are Passionate. They have an energy for life the likes of which I’ve not seen before and a love for people from all walks of life that will blow you away. These people are passion with a capital ‘P’.

Their people are Servant-Hearted. In a world that is all about selfish attempts to build our own empires, these guys are flipping it on its head. They live to serve others, to leverage what they have to see others come alive. It truly is a treat to be in their company. Their people are Generous. Generosity is a powerful thing. A good friend of mine, Rory Dyer, once said that we, as people, were born to be more like rivers than dams. Rivers release, dams restrict. Rivers have wide banks of abundant life, dams stagnate. And so generosity is letting our lives be that river, releasing our time, talents and treasures so that many lives around us are impacted. Hillsong Church does this well. They are the most generous people and their story is full of life and abundance. It is the story of ordinary people who are living out extraordinary lives because they’ve chosen to trust in the God of the extra-ordinary. Our story could be the same.

Be inspired!

Ballito Business Interview

Dr Dynamic Ballito’s Modern WomAn

We speak to one woman about how she juggles motherhood and business and what mothers can do to preserve their health and happiness in these times of uncertainty. This edition’s business interview is with a truly inspiring young woman who, like most women these days, is endeavouring to be a wife and mother and hold down a demanding job without having the wheels completely fall off! But first I should introduce you to the woman in question, Dr Harisha Karpath, who is a successful GP with her own practice in Ballito — the Pearl Wellness Clinic.

Ballito Business Interview

I

feel that anyone in the medical field, who does not only have to look after the people that they love at home, but also the people in the town where they live, has a pretty tough job — a job that only certain people could possibly handle. It requires a mixture of strength, emotional steadfastness and confidence, even in times of distress, as well as empathy, even when they feel that they have no more to give, to be able to ease the pain of others. Then they still have to be able to go home and kiss their husbands and pick up their children as if today and yesterday didn’t happen and tomorrow is merely a word — and let’s not forget that they have to look presentable and professional through it all! When I’ve woken up on the wrong side of the bed, my hair and face show it in no uncertain way —am I right, ladies? To quote Deion Sanders, ‘If you look good, you feel good and if you feel good, you play good...’ What’s weird, though, is that although Deion is a man, his words ring true for so many different facets of life.

Chatting to Dr Karpath about women’s health in general (in which she HAS A SPECIAL INTEREST), I learned something interesting that makes a world of sense. For women, there is a direct correlation between how you feel outside and its effect on how you feel inside and how you feel outside is a direct result of how busy or out of control your life is at that moment. If you are busy, it is easy to let yourself go because you have become so overwhelmed by everything else in your life — you soon even forget that you are a person who also has needs. The biggest problem in this regard, according to Dr Karpath, is that you start ignoring your body’s signals, something which starts to take its toll on your personal wellbeing mentally, physically and emotionally. And once this neglect happens, you actually render yourself incapable or are not strong enough to take care of all the other aspects of your life. ‘As a wife, mother and business owner, I know this feeling first hand and my advice is to take it slowly. Take aside 30 minutes

per day, or even an hour a week, to just lie in a bath with a glass of wine and unwind, or go and have your nails done — just give yourself time to take a breath and relax. Find your space in your life and don’t let it go — don’t lose yourself in the whirlpool of life. Even when my child was a new-born, I took the time to do my hair and makeup, something that honestly makes me feel better emotionally, which automatically translates into my work,’ she says. Emotional instability and stress are key factors in damaging one’s health and, as we age, things start going downhill and falling apart. Your energy levels aren’t the greatest and you start developing medical conditions that you never had in your twenties. Dr Karpath suggests that it is very important for women to take a step back and say, ‘Okay, I need to make time for those annual medicals that we all hate but which, in the end, could help save our lives.’ ‘I believe in preventative medicine,’ she explains, ‘and that’s how I run my practice and my life — it is a lot easier to prevent something from

It’s also important to accept that your life is busy and to embrace this, not fight it! I haven’t met many women who are more passionate about their jobs than Dr Karpath. From helping others in her medical capacity to the new side of her business, which involves aesthetics, she really wants to make people feel good, both on the inside and the outside. ‘I love the GP side of medicine because so often you end up treating whole generations in families and I think there’s something really special in that. As for the aesthetics, I love fashion and makeup and I really think that if we feel beautiful, we feel ready to face

the world head-on. I’m not saying that you won’t have times of despair and anxiety, but it’s important to pick yourself up and keep yourself healthy so that you can be there for the people in your life in the way that you know you want to be.’ As both she and her husband are doctors, their schedules are hectic so, to stay wellinformed and keep herself sane, Dr Karpath likes to schedule ‘me time’. She works out to get those happy endorphins rolling, she eats healthily and doesn’t even look at crazy fad diets, she listens to her body and gives it what it needs, she allows herself to have things in moderation because, in her words, ‘sometimes you just need some chocolate’. We all know that life isn’t always easy, but with some organization and planning and a bit of TLC — and let’s not forget a regular visit to the GP — there’s no reason why we cannot get out of life unscathed.

The next talented local that we are profiling is the passionate young Jess Solimene. For those of you who may not know every edition we profile one of Ballito’s many talented musicians and singers — people who we think have what it takes to become the next best thing. No newbie to music, Jess first picked up a guitar at the tender age of 12, but it wasn’t till she reached the top 30 in season seven of South African Idols that she realised that music was what she wanted to do with her life! This ever-so-talented young woman has all that it takes to make a big name for herself and, with the backing of her community, it won’t come as much of a surprise when she does! This is our exclusive interview with Jess Solimene...

Tell us a bit about yourself and your music? I’m a 22-year-old singer/songwriter from Ballito. I’ve been playing the guitar for 10 years now and I’ve been playing live for about five years — without a doubt my favourite thing to do. In addition to performing, I am extremely interested in the technical side of music and completed a Higher Certificate in Sound Production at SAE in Cape Town in 2012. What is the hardest thing for local musicians trying break into the professional music market? I think that it is trying to build up a solid fan base and being able to sustain it. We live in a time where even the most famous musicians in the world can be forgotten in a very short space of time. You have to work

extremely hard to earn your fans and even harder to keep them.

Brian Finch in Durban, where I played to a great crowd of about 200 people.

For readers who may never have heard your music, describe your sound in five words? Raw, Acoustic, Folk and Soul, with a hint of Country.

What is your vision for your music career — is your ambition to become the next big S.A artist? At the moment, I’m working on writing for my first album. Once that comes together, I’ll be able to get it recorded and, hopefully, distribute it within South Africa and also online through iTunes. Only after that will I be able to set new goals, but for now my vision is to release a full-length album of my original music.

How do you promote yourself in order to land big events and what big events have you played at? I apply for gigs wherever I can and I play open-mic nights on a regular basis. I also try to do a lot of charity events and fundraisers. It’s great to be able to give back, plus the exposure that I get from doing charity events often brings in more paying gigs. My most memorable performance was opening for the legendary

How do you use social media to influence your music career? I’m very active on my Facebook page, as well as my Twitter account. I try to post YouTube videos every so often in order

to grab people’s attention. I also have a Soundcloud account where people can listen to and download my music free of charge. Any awesome things and places that your music has taken you so far? One of the best things that I ever got the chance to do was busking at the Lifestyle Centre over the Christmas period a few years back. It was really raw and completely unplugged. Being able to catch the attention of passers-by and seeing them stop to listen (especially at that time of year!) was a true privilege. Are any of your songs on radio? If so, how does that process happen? I don’t have any songs on radio. Hopefully, someday in the future I’ll be able to make that happen. If you happen to know someone who knows someone, please let me know! When exactly do you know that you’ve made it in this industry? I play music for enjoyment, so for me every time that I get on stage feels as if I’ve made it. If you reach a point where your music resonates with a large group of people and you can hold that group’s attention for a sustained period of time, I guess that you can say that you’ve made it. Do you write your own songs and, if so, what is your Inspiration when writing? I do write my own songs. The song-writing process is a weird and wonderful thing. I’ve got an awesome, reverberant room in my house the size of a triple-garage and this is where I write most of my music. I am an avid reader, so I’m inspired by books as well as personal experience. In terms of my writing process, the music and melodies generally come first, followed by the words. How do you balance your music with other obligations like work, etc? Well, I have a full-time job during the week, so most of my writing and performing is done in the evenings or on weekends. It’s challenging to have such limited time to concentrate on my music because creativity can’t be forced, but I do the best that I can. Biggest influence on your musical career so far? I don’t actually know the immediate answer to this question. I did South African Idols in 2011, which completely altered my perspective on music and life. Idols taught me to fail and the aftermath taught me how to get back up and try harder. I guess that I could say that the experience of Idols has

EST 1988

probably had the biggest influence on the choices that I’ve made musically and in life. Locally, who has promoted you most? Donovan and Sam Crewe from TheStudio in Ballito have always backed me 100 percent and I owe them a whole lot of love and thanks. What is the best thing about performing for an audience? Wow — definitely the adrenalin rush. Even when it’s a very small crowd, if I can see that even one person is enjoying the show, it gives me such a buzz. I like to play around with my songs and change them up every time I play in order to keep it exciting for me and the listeners. My favourite song to perform live is definitely Sugarman, by Rodriguez. It always gets the crowd involved and raises the energy quite substantially.

IVE EXCLUS LE SA WHOLE OW N N IO DIVIS L OR POO OPEN F ERS BUILD

Best advice that you’ve ever been given? It’s better to try and to fail than to never know and always wonder.

IS YO UR CHILD SAFE ?

What embarrassing songs might I find on your MP3 player? I’m not really ashamed of any of the music that I listen to. I have a lot of really great (but terribly corny) 80s music like, for example, Tears for Fears, INXS, Journey, Dire Straits, Blondie, etc. Truthfully, I should have been a teenager in the 80s! What are your fondest musical memories? The first time that I ever got on a stage to sing and perform with my guitar was when I was 13 years old when I was in a band with two of my mates in our first year of high school. We performed a song by Green Day in front of our entire school. We were absolutely terrible, but the rush that I got out of that performance had me hooked. The band didn’t last, but my love for performing sure did. Five years from now, you will be…. Playing music of course! I hope that in five years’ time I’ll be able to play my own music on big stages in front of crowds of people who will sing my songs back to me. Where can potential fans hear your music — pubs, clubs, YouTube, etc? My Facebook page and Souncloud are under ‘Jess Solimene’; my YouTube Channel is ‘jocularbandits’ (don’t ask about the name — it’s not a very funny story); my Twitter and Instagram accounts are both ‘jessils’. People can find out where and when I’ll be performing on my Facebook page.

his is a truly awesome idea! Every girl uses make up, but is anyone ever really taught how to apply it properly? We were thrilled to be invited for a lesson on how to use makeup at Make Up Your Mind (MUYM) at Burnedale and Roxy and I loved seeing the difference between ‘younger’ and ‘older’ makeup, as well as how to create daytime and night-time looks. And, yes, there is a difference between just slapping makeup on and knowing how to do it properly, so this lesson was very interesting indeed. Kirsty knows her stuff and is passionate about women feeling great about

themselves every time that they leave the house and so putting your ‘face on’, so to speak, is a great place to start. We started right at the beginning — who knew that Step 1 is making sure that those eyebrows are perfectly shaped, something that can literally change the way your face looks. We then went through all the ‘layers’ of makeup for a day look that is perfectly suited to you. With so many tips to share, it proved to be a really interesting way to spend a morning. Also, what we found particularly interesting is that Kirsty does

only one half of your face and then you do the other half under her eagle eye to ensure that you get the look just right. It was really interesting to see how different just watching or listening to someone explain how to do something is to actually doing it and we really enjoyed the hands-on approach. We had great fun doing this — who knew that there is a different brush for every application! StaceyBerkeley For the Birds | forthebirdsshop.blogspot.com Tell us a bit about yourself and your business. Well, my name is Stacey, I am about to turn 30 and I feel as if I am just on the brink of becoming myself. I am married to a hunk of a human, Lyall, and we have a gorgeouslyunruly and beautifully-clever little girl, Mia. We live in Ezulweni in Foxhill and love being surrounded by our family and friends. I am a super-creative person — some might call me crazy — and I love my little shop, For the Birds, at Burnedale. My Aunt June and I co-own the store. She is hilariously funny and keeps me on my toes with all things ‘business’. We opened the store about 18 months ago and, although we can’t retire yet, we really enjoy our jobs more than most people and love finding new treasures to stock in our unique store. What made you want to start this unique business? I worked with my husband at his signage business, Zap Signs, in Ballito, for five years. We had so many cool tools at our disposal that we started making up our own products, which we believed had the potential to sell, but we had no retail point from which to sell them from. At the same time, we had just had Mia and, while a tiny baby in an office is one thing, a crawling, demanding six-month-old does not make for a happy environment for anyone. The opportunity to open the store at Burnedale fell into my lap and, hey presto, we had a place to retail our radical products. It also means that I can still have Mia with me most days — a winwin for everyone!!

Tell us about what you offer. For the Birds is a teeny-tiny little store with bucket-loads of charm. We stock lovinglyhandmade ceramics, locally-made fashion accessories, quirky home decor, stationery, bath products and all sorts of other treats. Born out of a love for all things awesome, we set up the shop aiming to supply customers with products that were different from the everyday, run-of-the-mill kind. What makes your products so different and better than similar store-bought products? Our shop is a mini-showcase for some of the products that we make up ourselves. We make up Perspex wall art packs, chopping boards, lampshades, leather jewellery and a variety of other items ready-to-buy. We also do custommade wallpaper and vinyl wall art, which I feel gives us a unique edge. Our design service means that we’re able to make up bespoke products that no one else will have but that everyone will want and, because we make them up ourselves, there is no middleman, which cuts out the middleman’s pricing — once again a win-win for everyone! Why are you so passionate about the products that you sell and what you do? Most of our stock is sourced locally (there is some major talent in this little town!) but some stock does come in from Jozi and Cape Town. Because we know our suppliers personally, we know the time and love that they put into each of their products and this in turn makes

us feel like caretakers of their little babies. We stock a range of recycled products that have interesting stories and beautiful finishes and blend the old and the new together perfectly! How can you not be passionate about Miss D’s silver jewellery, QuirkE’s home-ware, Alice May’s dippy-egg boards, Sue Sylvester’s home fabric items and Rollin Vintage’s silverware, to name just a few? What do you see for the future of your brand? We want to open a For the Birds 2 — and maybe a 3 and 4 and 5! We are looking for a new space to open a second store. We love our little slice of retail loveliness and would like to extend our wares to other places, so watch this space! As a start-up business, who has been the biggest help and driving force behind you? My Aunt June is my partner and also the one who spurs me on to put my head down and get stuff done. My husband is my bestie — he always tells me the truth (even if it makes me cross) and he helps me with anything that I need.

Kaliko Exclusive Clothing Facebook - KalikoBallito

Tell us about yourself. I am, as most of you will know, a hairstylist by profession. Hairdressing is my greatest passion and I have been doing it for about 20 years. I am always looking to improve my customers’ experience at my salon and to find ways to keep up my competitive edge, as well as earn a little bit more on the side. Clothing is my next-greatest passion, so it just seemed natural to incorporate the two. How do the two complement each other? Well, I have always been interested in fashion and I’m in the hair industry, where we tend to follow new looks and trends. Fashion these days works hand-in-hand with new hair trends, so now I offer a one-stop shop for all my clients’ trending needs. Hanah, our store manageress, is fantastic at helping women put different outfits together to suit their bodies and their hair. She makes you feel very comfortable and always offers extra personal attention. Tell us a bit more about Kaliko and where you are today. I started the business almost three years ago. Initially, the majority of what we sold was imported garments — about 80 percent of our stock was imported. We recently changed our business model so that 90 percent of our stock now comes from local suppliers, with only 10 percent being imported. The reason for this is that chain stores these days stock items that are made in China and then make you pay astronomical prices for garments that are actually manufactured for half that price. Nobody appreciates being ripped off, so I took

a stand and decided to support our amazing local designers and that was the beginning of Kaliko Exclusive. Going in, what was your goal for the new business? My aim was to support local manufacturers from whom we could get quality garments at great prices. We source our own fabrics and, by doing so, have the perfect opportunity to create unique looks and designs. It’s always so much fun sourcing the fabrics, sending them off for production and receiving our end-product. We love opening our deliveries — always with great excitement — and we are proud to say that our clients feel the same excitement that we do. What makes your products so very different to similar store-bought items? Our prices are very competitive. In fact, considering that we have limited numbers and unique designs, our prices are very reasonable in comparison with other boutiques in the surrounding areas. We have also tried to cater for everyone and we do our best to do sizes for every figure. Who has been the biggest help and driving force behind you? My hubby has been my greatest fan and supports me in all that I do. And a huge big ‘thank you’ goes to all our customers for their support over the past three years. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today and it gives me a great sense of pride that I can help locals to support locals.

Alice May The Block Shop | www.theblockshop.co.za

Tell us a little about who Alice May is and a bit about your background? The short version – I was part graphic designer and part shoe designer. I designed a range of shoes and handbags in Cape Town for two years after I had completed studying and then worked for a much-loved South African brand before doing a shoe pattern-cutting course in Milan. Recently, I invented the now-famous dippy-egg board under Alice May label and somehow, with the stars aligned, The Block shop was born. That’s quite a story. Tell us more about how it all started. My husband, Rich’s, background is in furniture design and manufacture and he and I designed a board to hold a dippy-egg and toast soldiers. It started as a fun invention to sell at markets along with my Alice May range of stationery. Demand for this little board exploded and today we have them in retailers all over South Africa under the Alice May label. When did you get to the point where a hobby became a business? What made you so sure that this was what the market needed and wanted? I started out Alice May with the intention of designing wedding stationery and getting back to my graphic design creativity. With the success of the dippy-egg board, I expanded into wooden boards with personalised logos for weddings and corporate functions and eventually I was invoicing out more wooden boards than wedding invitations! With the present foodie culture and our passion for

38 | w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

cooking and functionality in the kitchen, we know our target market like a best friend and, with online shopping finally taking off in South Africa, the timing seemed perfect. Tell us about the new range and what you are offering. The Block Shop is home to a range of bamboo blocks for the kitchen. Each ‘block’ has been carefully designed for functional use, but with the intention of being beautiful in presentation. Our products are made from solid A-grade bamboo and, although assisted with machine engineering on some of the designs, such as the carving block, every one is handcrafted individually. Each ‘block’ in the shop can be custom-engraved. Apart from personalising a block for a gift, we offer foodie boards with logos for corporate functions and weddings. What is the process from ordering, production to delivery time, etc? From payment of an order, we like to dispatch within seven working days, with delivery within two to three days. Why bamboo? To start with, not all bamboo is responsibly farmed or products manufactured with toxin-free glue. When buying anything in bamboo, find out what grade it is if you want to be ‘green’. The A-grade bamboo that we use is also manufactured to surpass strict EU guidelines on toxicity and emissions, thus ensuring that the bamboo is food-safe. Apart from being environment-preserving, bamboo is a very hygienic ‘wood’ to use in your kitchen

for chopping veggies or carving meat or fish. What makes your products so different and better to store-bought products? Our designs are unique — something that you can’t find anywhere else. Even if you could find something similar, could you customengrave it and say with confidence that the bamboo used is A-grade and environmentally renewable? Our products are extremely strong and durable. Treat them with care, and they will be in your kitchen for life. All our blocks are made here in Ballito. We are passionate about supporting local industry. How is the business run at the moment? Online orders www.theblockshop.co.za or email hello@theblockshop.co.za for more info. E-commerce is a growing trend in South Africa and people are learning to trust the Internet. Our products need to be pre-ordered anyway if they are to be custom-engraved and now you can do this from the comfort of your home, where the item will be delivered, instead of you having to lug it around — our products are certainly not light! Why are you so passionate about your products? I can see that this is not just a business for you. Rich and I love food and experimenting in the kitchen. Our products were developed to make our kitchen function more efficiently. We are both passionate about design on every level and, with Rich’s background in design and manufacture and my background in design, we love dreaming up clever products.

Suané van der Merwe Right-hand-woman at Car Care Clinic | cccballito@gmail.com Tell us a bit about yourself and your background. I am a born and bred Capetonian, but when I finished high school I relocated to Johannesburg, where I worked part-time as a substitute teacher at the school where my mother was teaching. Through a friend at the school I heard about a vacant post at a new vehicle repair centre, Car Care Clinic. I started working for them in August 2009, fell in love with my job and it has been my life ever since. So what exactly is it that you do at the Car Care Clinic? I am Gorton, the owner’s, right-hand-woman. I do our company’s admin and I also repair the vehicles. Yes, shocker — I work on cars! How long has this business been running and when did it open in Ballito? Car Care Clinic has been open since 2007. It started in Boksburg, where Gorton opened his first branch. In 2008 a second branch opened in Springs. In 2010, thanks to Gorton’s wife’s career achievements, we amalgamated the branches and moved our company to Ballito, where Car Care Clinic has been amazingly well received. Both Gorton and I are very friendly, kind people and we strive to help everyone in any way that we can. Our name has always been very important to us, so we do everything that we can to make sure that we maintain our good reputation — and a workshop as clean as it was the on first day that we moved into our new ‘home’. All our work comes in purely

by word-of-mouth as we have not done any advertising since our initial start-up. What made you want to go into such a unique trade for a woman? Why cars? As a child, the first gift that I would ask for was a toy car. My baby brother’s first word was ‘car’. My father was in the Defence Force while we were growing up and we always had a lot to do with the vehicles, so playing with toy cars was our favourite pastime. I have loved cars ever since I can remember and they have always been a big part of my life — I truly am a bit of a petrol-head. Best part about being a woman in this field? The best part about being a woman in this industry is that it is always fascinating to see the expression on people’s faces when they find out that I don’t just work behind the desk and that I know a lot about cars and actually work on the cars as well. How do you overcome any stigma that might surround your line of work, especially as a woman? Yes I do get judged — quite often, actually. But I firmly believe and live by the statement that ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’. When you are in the car repair industry, you often get looked down upon as you have to do a lot with oils and grease and that sort of thing. There is a great difference between a mechanic and a technician, as the term ‘mechanic’ refers to an unskilled labourer. I am a technician and not

every mechanic can do what we technicians do, but we can do most of what they do. Working on a car is not as dirty as everyone believes and it also involves a lot of mathematical and scientific thinking and application. What do you think sets you and your company apart from other ‘technicians’? We don’t just fix cars; we take care of our customers by taking extra care of their vehicles. We don’t just take people’s money; we build relationships with all our customers, based on trust and communication. We strive to educate our customers about their vehicles as a safety measure. Who has been the biggest help and driving force behind you? My first biggest help and driving force is Gorton, who is a fantastic person to work with. The second is our customers, who are all very important to us and inspire us tremendously. I actually get out of bed in the morning and look forward to seeing what the day might hold and who we will see and how we will be helping them. w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

Outdoor Living When it comes to outdoor living, as South Africans, we all respond well to any new home or design project, be it in a magazine, or on TV, that successfully manages to separate the divide between indoors and outdoors, and incorporate outdoor living within the home. As an Interior Design Company, we have seen how, over the years, the importance of this trend and way of life has become the foundation for many a design project, and try, ourselves, to make this the primary focus for the way in which we design. Your patio, or outdoor entertainment area, is no longer an empty space attached to the side of a house, barricaded behind trelli-doors, but rather

another room in the house. A room that serves equal importance to a formal lounge or dining room. This being said, we do however, find ourselves having to educate clients, on new builds and existing homes, that equal investment needs to be made in the design and furniture selection on your patio, as they would invest in the rest of their home. There is little point in designing a home around the theme of “bringing the outdoors in” if you purchase a matching set of plastic furniture and slap it down on a cold tiled floor. When we design, there are key areas that we focus on, and have found that regardless of budget, style of home or very size of the area in question, keeping these simple steps in mind, makes all the difference. Follow the general theme of the home out onto the patio or entertainment area. Not only will this give your patio a sense of unity with the rest of the home, and tie all areas together, but it sets a path that now needs to be followed in the selection of

40 | w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

furniture and material choices. If you apply the same thinking in how you design your formal spaces, your patio should mirror this. Don’t think “patio” - nobody can deny that a styling or designing a patio comes with its own set of rules, and that weather and a coastal climate impacts what one can and cannot use. However, we have seen some of the most successfully designed homes embrace careful selection of materials and furniture, where we brought in timber cladded ceilings, plush finishes that replicated touches of their formal lounge, carefully considered lighting solutions, and outdoor furniture, that tied in with what was used throughout the house. We always suggest that if you wouldn’t use a piece of furniture or style idea inside the house, question if you should be using it outside the house. Its outside for a reason – with all this said and done, an outdoor entertainment area is just that. It is a room in the house that should maximises the benefits that we as South Africans get to enjoy on a daily basis. Take advantage of the space, and create an environment that you find best allows you to enjoy the outdoors. Have a couple of sunloungers if the space allows, incorporate a spot in the sun to read a book, make braaing and eating outdoors easy and comfortable and make your outdoor space an area worth spending most of your time. Log onto www.union3.co.za or pop into one of our stores, and find those items that will help you truly make outdoor living a reality.

Chatting to Julie Robert earlier this year, I realised that very few people actually know just how much Sugar Dance offers. This one-stop dance/exercise studio caters for all your dance needs and, no matter what your age, there is a full range of options available. Each instructor is a professional in their own field and I absolutely love the fact that you can see that they are all doing what they are most passionate about. So we were invited for a whirlwind tour of the Sugar Dance studios where, no matter what time of day or night you arrive, something is happening. We focused on the options available for women, but Julie also runs Sugar Dance Kids where youngsters can learn ballet, hip-hop and Zumba.

Pole Dancing with Ruschka Simionato Pole dancing is an art form that includes a blend of strength training, cardiovascular exercise and gymnastics. This combination will tone the body while focusing on the arms and core. From the moment that you start to warm up, you are already working your body, but I was very surprised (and so was my teen) at how hard it was. Pole dancing takes exceptional upper-body strength — and as few clothes as possible — to be able to stick to that pole! Beginners’ classes are a must to get into the idea of trusting the pole and your body. It is physical and empowering and, from what I could see, after a little while you are able to do some amazing moves. Although it might be very unconventional, it is, without a doubt, beautiful and sexy but, above all, one heck of a work-out — we are talking strong beautiful bodies here.

Nia

Zumba

with Caro Smith and Poppy Poretti

with Julie Robert, Chantelle Nicholson and Franco Human

Nia is a fusion of martial arts and freespirited dance that aims to leave you inspired. Expect to push yourself to new boundaries of body and voice. It is a low-impact dance form that will get you sweating! Nia, which stands for nonimpact aerobics, was quite a surprise. This was the one class that I enjoyed from the moment that we arrived. It is also very spiritual and incorporates a lot of easy, flowing dance movements, which makes it an easy class to start with and follow. I do believe that if you are getting back into either working out or dance, this is a very good place to start and it appeals to both young and old, fit and unfit. You do the class at your own pace and, as you become more comfortable with the movements or exercise, you can ramp it up with big movements that get you sweating.

Zumba is a Latin-inspired, easy-to-follow, calorie-burning dance fitness class. Feel the music and let loose on the dance floor. Zumba classes are fun and no classical dance training is needed to enjoy a class. Ditch the gym and join the Zumba revolution that has millions worldwide HOOKED! Zumba is fun, fast and, with a little bit of dance co-ordination, anyone can keep up with the dance moves. From what I could see, once you get them, you are well on your way to a toned, strong, fit body. Chantelle loves what she does and you can see that getting her students hot and sweaty is her main priority.

Adult Contemporary with Nicole Theunissen

This is contemporary dance with a focus on technique, paired with a love of movement. Emphasis is placed on floor work and strength training and choreography is also taught. Nicole is an awesome dancer and she is so flexible that it is inspiring just to watch her move and her classes are fast and precise. If you have previous dance experience, this class is fantastic and definitely a very good workout. It is very much a dance class and less focused on just getting your sweat on. It is beautiful and very much a ‘step up movie’ kind of class.

Liquid Yoga with Helen Weaver Well-known yoga teacher and free-diving specialist, Helen Weaver, is an excellent yoga teacher and her classes are popular with both men and women. This unique style combines free-diving techniques with yoga which makes for an extremely satisfying workout. Helen is an amazing teacher and, keeping a sharp keen eye on her students, with each movement she corrects and pushes you beyond what you thought were your own limits. The class is also relatively fast, but even a beginner is able to keep up, though at times the ‘how does your body even do that’ question does come up. It is interesting to see how different shapes, sizes and even pregnant ladies can easily keep up with 95 percent of the class. Yoga is also very much aimed at the mind/body connection and takes your body to a flexibility level that you did not know was possible. Sage Cafe

Mamma G’s

If you like thin, crispy bases, homemade tomato sauce and toppings galore, you have to try the mid-blowing pizzas from the Sage Cafe Deli in Salt Rock. The centre, which is tucked away near Tiffany’s, has an amazing play area for the kiddies, as well as sand art and play houses to keep them amused. In our search for Ballito’s best pizza, we were lucky enough to sample one of Sage’s signature pizzas, the La Scala. The thin, crispy homemade base, cooked to perfection, was topped with Sage’s very own homemade tomato sauce, a generous amount of cheese, the perfect combination of herbs and a collection of the freshest toppings, which included grilled aubergine, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, Danish feta, garlic and chilli. This unique take on a vegetarian pizza was to-die-for and even made us forget that we weren’t eating any meat! Owner, Rory, says that the point of a good meal is to eat it first with your eyes and I have to say that ours were licking the plate long before the first bite! This pizza wouldn’t have been my first choice on a normal evening out, but trying something new is never a bad thing and I have to say that I would go back to Sage just to have this pizza!

For a great Italian pizza just like mamma used to make, Mamma G’s is the place to go. This family-friendly restaurant, situated at the Ballito Junction, takes their pizza like it should be taken — seriously! With a homemade base perfected from an old Italian recipe, their dough is made in a temperature-controlled environment from a top-secret formula. Yes — there is science to a great pizza. The second most important factor is their tomato base, which is imported straight from Italy, ensuring great flavour and, of course, real Italian oregano. As for their toppings, Mamma G’s ain’t afraid to pile it on! Their flair for creativity and innovation is also a welcome treat — a sort of don’t-knock-it-till-you-try-it attitude that often makes addicts of their clients! The oh-soamazing new pizza on the menu, the Mexicana alla Nachos, was suggested by a customer and perfected by Mamma G’s. Comprising of minced beef, chilli, onion, nachos, guacamole, sour cream and salsa, nothing beats the flavours and textures of this pizza. Another Mamma G’s must-have favourite is the Agustino. With bacon, feta, spinach, olives and avo, it has a bit of everything but, nevertheless, a great balance and full flavour. The Parma, with Parma ham, rocket and grana padano shavings. The fresh herbs that cover each pizza really set them apart and offers a freshness like no other.

La Piazza

Situated at The Well, La Piazza is another top contender when it comes to great pizza! Marco, the owner, attributes the great taste and flavour to the fact that they make their own pizza bases every day and let them rise for a sufficient length of time. As important as a good base is, Marco says that a key ingredient to any pizza is the tomato sauce, which at La Piazza is made using puree tomatoes as well as several secret herbs and spices to give it its full flavour and consistency. He maintains that a pizza should still have flavour even without any topping except a good tomato base and some mozzarella and, of course, some A-grade oregano. When it comes to their pizza options, he follows the traditional Italian way of less is more, but south Africans seem to love pizza the opposite way, with as many flavours and ingredients as you can fit on it. We tasted their top-sellers — the Pizza Amore, the Avo and the Meat Lovers, which are all very popular. The Pizza Amore is full of flavour and you can see why it is a top-seller, the Avo is obviously a fantastic flavour combo and the Meat Lovers is, well, just that, with everything meaty on there! La Piazza is always a friendly place to go and eat a meal, with good service, a good vibe and of, course, GREAT pizza! Tel 032 586 3565

Salt Cafe

Salt Café has come to be known as the place to go for a quick, simple pizza that packs a punch of flavour. With a thin, crispy base covered with a perfect foundation of Italian tomato sauce and just the right amount of herbs awaiting their toppings, these pizzas can stand proudly alongside those produced by bigger restaurants. Toppings, whilst on the simple side, have a ratio of just enough mozzarella-to-filling to ensure that every bite to be a great bite. Located in Salt Rock, on the corner of ... this quaint little hunger-buster of a restaurant provides ravenous beach-goers with flavourful food without fuss. We munched on their best-seller, the Quattro, which is a really delicious pizza. Baked in a woodfired oven — like every good pizza should be — and topped with artichokes, olives, mushrooms and salami, it’s a mix of stunning flavours that just work together! I am not a huge artichoke fan, but I couldn’t get enough of their rendition of it. Other great buys include ..... so, if you’re looking for great pizza in a relaxed atmosphere with a beach vibe, a quick stop at Salt is a must for your to-do list. Tel 032 525 5576

s part of the Mr Price Pro Coastal Living Bru’s Facing the Elements competition, local designer and fashion designer extraordinaire, Genevieve Daw of Tas a Ver, showcased her amazing line of beach-wear and range of crocheted bikinis in a stunning photo shoot on the beach. Born and bred in KZN, Genevieve has known that fashion was her calling since the tender age of eight, so after school it was a no-brainer that she should follow her passion and go on to study fashion design at the Durban Technikon. The inspiration for her amazing crocheted creations came from a picture of a crocheted bikini that she had seen in a magazine and, having had no luck in finding anything similar in KZN, she decided to use her knowledge of fashion and produce her own. This was the start of the Tas a Ver crocheted beach line that made her the winner of the Mr Price Pro Coastal Living Bru’s Facing the Elements competition 2014!

Fine Indian Dining @ Thava

When most of us think of Indian cuisine, we picture the east coast-style Indian cooking that we’ve grown up with. But the fairlynew Thava Continental restaurant, which operates from the renowned Boathouse Guesthouse, breaks the mould with authentic, aromatic cuisine from India that can only be described as pure indulgence and exceeds all expectations when you want good Indian-style cuisine.

and tomato sauce that the lamb is slowly cooked in. It’s spicy, but there is no burn, and the lamb is extremely tender and sucks up all the spices and flavour. The lamb lies in the tomato-based sauce and delivers an amazing all-round meal. It is the type of dish that you’ll want to experience again and again — it really is that good!

The restaurant is the third in the chain established by the Thava Group and is the first branch to open outside Gauteng. Focusing on authentic Indian cuisine, with its roots in Kerala in India, the group — and most definitely the restaurant in Ballito —is clearly getting the recipe right. It was good to head down to the old town centre, which may be seeing a slight resurgence, to the Boathouse, where the local Thava is based. Your experience starts at the door, where you are greeted very pleasantly, and the good service continues to the very end of your meal. The menu is well-put-together, with enough variety to get you wondering what to try, but it isn’t exhaustive and confusing. There are vegetarian choices in the Indian menu and, if there’s someone at the table who prefers a continental menu, Thava offers soup, prawn cocktails and salad starters, with a choice of burgers, steaks and seafood for mains. As it is an Indian restaurant, we were ready to experiment a little and were guided by

The prawn curry has a bit more heat to it, but is exactly how a prawn curry should be and can compete with the prawn curries that popular Durban restaurants brag about. A spoonful was enough and there just wasn’t any more space to fit in another bite... although my mouth was addicted. our host in making our choices. He wasn’t wrong — not once! The Chilli Chicken Starter is a hit. It’s a generous portion, enough to be a small main meal, of panfried chicken breast cubes with peppers, vinegar and soya sauce. We also tried their fresh, creamy mussels, which really were some of the biggest mussels that we have ever been served in any restaurant. There were a variety of mains at the table, including my favourite, the Thava Lamb Chop Masala, as well as prawn curry and a traditional medium-rare steak. The Lamb Chop Masala is authentic Indian cooking at its very best. Mine was a generous portion with a bucket-full of flavour from the spiced garam masala and the ginger garlic, onion

To end the evening off, there is a selection of heavenly traditional Indian sweet temptations, as well as a choice of speciality coffees. We opted for the Soji, which is a traditional tasty sweet wheat dessert made to compliment the spicy Indian cuisine. Sitting outside beside the pool with the Soji and a cup of coffee was the perfect end to a wonderful eating experience. Thava is highly-recommended if what you want is Indian cuisine and is open for both lunch and supper. Their service is pleasant and helpful when it comes to helping you to understand the menu and making recommendations to suit your eating preferences. I want to eat more... I just can’t!

cAR rEVIEW Ballito

On the hunt Words Kari Evans-Webb

It is hard to argue that this new MINI is anything but a major step forward... Buying a car at first view can be like falling in love. Well, kind of, anyway. It may not the best thing that ever happens to you but, lets be honest, it is all about how the car is going to fit into your long-term lifestyle. And that’s what really impressed me about the All-New MINI. I was recently invited to the MINI launch in Cape Town, and I must say that if I were in the market and looking for a new ‘companion’, it would be difficult to not be impressed with this little gem. This is an all-new version of the now ‘old’ favourite that has been fettled with in all the right areas. It is unmistakably MINI through and through, with those classic proportions and rounded details it is as good looking as ever while being slightly longer, wider and taller. I love how the designers have been able to work out how alleviate any cramped cabin feeling and keep the tapered side windows and hovering roof. They have also rehashed the interior just enough for it to make more sense. The speedo and window switches have been moved to the more natural and intuitive positions and yet the cabin has retained its MINI quirk and charm. The drive feels as quick as you could need, with 0-100km/h arriving in 9.9 seconds.

Steering is direct, agile and predictable. However it is the ride quality was where the ‘all-new’ part of the game really came to the fore. This MINI handles the bumps and curves impressively well and manages it all with the extensively redesigned axle. The steering is sharp and direct like it should be in a MINI and it handles playfully, but thankfully not at the expense of comfort. If you pair all of this with the turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, it serves up the kind of performance and user-intuitiveness that belies its 72 kW power output. The terrifically responsive engine, offering strong performance from just 1000 rpm all the way through the rev band, backs up a satisfying thrum from the engine. That gives it economy (5.4 l/100 km) as well as the personality to truly enjoy driving it all the time. When you add to the mix the new 5-Door variant and there is a chance for even those women in a family way to have the practicality meshed personality that has held a lot of charm to those looking for a car to create and personalise accordingly. Does this third-generation MINI trump its predecessors? Yes, because it will become a true driver’s favourite, yet still be a car everyone can fall in love with. Few cars have

the range of performance and handling attributes of the MINI but now it has a broader appeal thanks to its improved ride quality and everyday usability. At R 197,401, what’s not to love? w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

Ballito fEATURE

Lucille now holds the new record at Clubventure for the pyramid challenge at a speedy 23 seconds!

So, with a jam-packed schedule and competitive spirits at an all-time high, we were divided into two teams, the Green team and the Yellow team. Now, in order to paint this picture properly, you need to know that the Green team (my team) was made up of five women of varying ages and the Yellow team of six people, two of whom were male, so you kind of get a slight indication that one team is at somewhat of an advantage — we’ll let you figure out who! Our first challenge was a quick quiz about Clubventure which would give the winning team a head-start on the Amazing Race Challenge. Clearly my team’s listening skills weren’t up to par, because we were still scratching our heads while the Yellow team was disappearing into the distance! But that wasn’t going to put a damper on our spirits - we faced the challenge as if there was R10 000 at stake (in actual fact it was just

62 | w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

10 000 points). Armed with a map, a bucket and one ferocious team leader (none other than our stubborn sales person for The Ballito magazine – Lucille Wendler), we set out at a running pace for our first marker! Whether running on gravel roads, through bushes, navigating logs over streams and climbing ledges, we were fierce and dedicated. Broken nail — what’s that! We were at our second-to-last challenge when we finally met up with the Green team, but that just fuelled our fire to be even better — we were a well-oiled machine and, as a team, we were unstoppable! Three balls into the hoops and now for a game of darts — all we needed was one dart in the bulls-eye! (Where’s the tequila when you need it!) Finally, after a few wipes of our sweat-drenched foreheads, we nailed it! We were victorious! Could it be true that the all-woman Green team ate the Yellows for breakfast!

Panting, adrenaline- filled and glugging down water as if we had been stuck in a desert for a month, we prepared ourselves for the next competition. Now for someone as clumsy and uncoordinated as me, an obstacle course seems like a death trap! But when you are having so much fun, honestly, you just put you flaws on the back burner in your drive to succeed. We were ushered into a cage in our teams and then one team member from each group had to dash from the cage, climb up wooden poles and down again, carefully run across different-sized poles, climb up and down a netted wall, crawl under some low poles, over a seesaw-type pole and then — the worst part — shoot a tin bucket with a catty and, finally, throw a horseshoe onto a pole — only to have to run back at warp speed and tap the next person of the team in! This is a test of mental, physical and emotional ability but, most of all, it teaches you how

Ballito

to be encouraging, how to work through tough times as a group and how to put your trust in other people. It was an extremely tough challenge and, although we girls fought to the bitter-end, the Yellow team were eventually crowned with well-deserved glory! Bumped and a little bruised, we then dabbled in some mind games while we rested until the next adventure began. Next up was two hours of exhilaration-filled ziplining (Yay, no competitive drive was needed here), a breath-taking way to enjoy nature from a unique perspective, not to mention that it’s just downright AWESOME! The 1.5km zipline tour at Clubventure takes you through and over forestland, across the Sampoya River from platform to platform and offers an experience that the whole family — anyone from five to 75 — can experience! Whist the initial thought of

leaping into the air is rather nerve-wracking and really not natural, once you lift your feet off the ground and the force of gravity pulls you along the steel cable over the treetops, you totally forget about anything except the moment and feel more like a sitting/flying superhero. Trust me, once you traverse your first line, you will be first in line to do the next one, just like our salesperson for The Umhlanga, Kubashni, who we almost had to push off the platform despite her terrified screams and shouts for her first attempt. In the case of most of us, by the last platform we were actually trying out ways to make ourselves go faster — which nearly ended with me ploughing straight into a zipline guide at the end of the line! I am thankful to say, however, that no one was hurt, but rather that a lot of laughs were had! The only thing that could top ziplining was the next challenge — the ‘Parazip’.

The first of its kind in the world, this 400m-long zip takes you high into a mountain before you set sail off the edge of a cliff. The walk to the top is one that will get your heart beating at an abnormal rate but, once you’re up there, the view is unparalleled. I thought I’d be semi-brave and go off second. Once I leaped — or should I say got pushed off — the initial drop stunned me into utter silence. Maybe it was awe or sheer terror, but once that subsided, total exhilaration took over and, as the parachute opened behind me, I felt what I can only imagine genuine parachuting feels like. Once back on land we were ravenous and, luckily for us, Clubventure had prepared a feast fit for a king — or should I say a braai fit for a South African! Salads of all types and flavours, garlic bread, the best braaied chicken you’ll ever eat and, of course, what’s a braaivleis without some good ol’ pap-en-sous! We indulged around our private table in the boma and reminisced on all that we had done that day, laughing

at memorable and hilarious moments, like the time my calf went into a spasm during a team photo and I promptly fell to the floor in a screaming fit. It really had been a phenomenal day, but it was not yet over and, after we had filled our bellies, it was time to suit-up and don our paintball faces! After a short briefing, we made our way to the paintball forest and in no time at all we were game-on and crawling along the ground through dried-out riverbeds in the hope that we wouldn’t get hit in the face. The Green team’s tactic was, unfortunately, to hide, hide, hide, which resulted in the Yellow team completely surrounding us. My ploy, after a nice shot to the side of my head, was simply to fire the bullets until I could safely admit defeat. By the end of the game, most of the Green team players resembled a Jackson Pollock but, nevertheless, great fun was had even while being ‘tortured’. An expedition to Clubventure is guaranteed to really challenge you whilst ensuring you have an amazing time, with a whole lotta craziness and a whole lotta good times.

Best of all, it gets you out of your cubicle and into some much-needed bonding time with your workmates and, hey, after a few paintballs to someone’s thigh or head, your anxiety and stresses might well be non-existent! With their professional and experienced guides, you feel completely safe and at ease in whatever you do — and their sense of humour is really refreshing in times of great uncertainty. With so much under one roof and the option of having a tailor-made package that suits your budget, Clubventure is the perfect place, right on your doorstep, to escape to and have great fun. With its plentiful accommodation, it’s perfect for an office team, family fun, a school tour or even a spectacular birthday party. A tremendous thank you to Johann and Chantel, owners of Clubventure, which has been running successfully for over 6 years for an amazing time and their flawless hospitality.

Ballito’s Street Heroes

are back Defending SMD Ballito Street Heroes Time Attack champion Dezzi Gutzeit will be back in KwaDukuza this year to defend his hardearned crown. Owning his own racetrack on the KZN South Coast has ensured his racing skills are as sharp as ever, and when he takes to the 1.5km time trial track in Ballito on 13 and 14 September his goal will only be victory.

Gutzeit won the inaugural SMD Ballito Street Heroes title in 2013 by less than a second ¬ in fact, the top 5 competitors were separated by less than one second ¬ and this year¹s competition is expected to be just as tight. Gutzeit will not only have to fend off newcomers looking to get their names up in lights, but old racing foes Mike McLoughlin and the Backdraft Racing team, Willie De beer, and even his own son, Jade. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the SMD Ballito Street Heroes event, it is a Festival of Speed. Fast cars, highly skilled drivers, tight corners, long straights, and seats so close to the track you can feel the

heat off of the racers engines make up the motoring weekend.

Last year’s event saw just over 3000 spectators visit the Laguna Seca precinct track and surrounds during the two days of motoring bliss, and the event was hailed a massive success. 2014’s iteration of the SMD Ballito Street Heroes event is expected to surpass 2013’s success, with improvements and expansions set to take place. Besides the Time Attack racers fighting for top spot and the crown of Ballito Street Hero on the track ¬which is approved by Motorsport South Africa - this year¹s event will feature all the racing classes from last year, as well as the addition of a historic car class. Ferrari’s, Backdraft Cobras, Porches, muscle cars, kit cars, and fully fledged racers will be commonplace at the event, and the Italian, America, and German supercar battle for supremacy is set to

continue. SMD Ballito Street Heroes 2014 will also host the Super Drift Experience Arena ¬ an arena where the public can pay to be a passenger to an experienced drifter showing off his skills. The drifting action will not end there, though, as another new arrival makes its mark ¬ the drifting stunt team from Excess Promotions. Last year’s favourites include the freestyle motocross displays, Show and Shine competitions, and 4x4 displays are all scheduled to return in 2014. Improvements will be made to the time trial track this year to ensure an even better viewing experience for fans, with a bridge now traversing the track - which means no pedestrian track crossings and breaks in the racing action. The SMD Ballito Street Heroes event is proudly brought to you by host sponsor KwaDukuza Municipality, the title sponsor SMD Group, and the Ilembe Chamber of Commerce. Ballito Profile Feature

Seeds

Ballito’s business sector is really thriving so, for the next couple editions, we will be profiling those businesses that have been around and running successfully for over 10 years, as well as some that have just started out. Meet our August Seeds to Trees...

Slimline Pools

Owner Kerry & Marius Nieuwoudt When did you start? We opened our doors in Ballito in November 2013 after having a store in Richards Bay since 1988. What do you do? Everything related to pools and water! We specialize in the general maintenance and repair of pools, the construction and resurfacing of pools, as well as water balance, the retailing of spares, chemicals and safety nets and in customer support. Why did you start this business? I was raised in the industry and it gave us a good life as children. We felt that our little girl would benefit from the same lifestyle if we opened a branch on the North Coast.

What do you think the cornerstone of your business is? Strong customer relationships. We wouldn’t be here without our customers and it is, therefore, imperative that we look after them. What is your number one rule in business? Top of mind awareness is key! If people don’t know that you exist, the business will never survive. What are your views on integrity in business? Integrity is absolutely non-negotiable — customer relationships will never survive without it.

What words comes to mind when you hear the word ‘Ballito’? Community! The sense of community in this town is incredible. We love the fact that people are so willing to support local businesses above other options, as well as the family lifestyle and the way in which people reach out to help each other. What does the future hold for you and your business? Whatever we choose to make of it. We aspire to franchise the business in the future and, hopefully, become a nationwide pool outlet.

What do you think your customers want? Consistent, top-notch service that offers guarantees on workmanship, plus honesty pertaining to the purchase. Biggest lesson learnt? Know your game! Pools are an incredibly specialized industry, but there are no courses available to teach people the basics, so knowledge of the industry is only gained through experience. Like any industry, the pool industry is constantly changing and it’s important to keep abreast. What do you deem to be success? Success isn’t something concrete and certainly not limited. One day we would like to look back and know that we worked to the best of our ability to achieve what we have.

Headfirst Owner Robyn Clark

When did you start? HeadFirst was started in 2003 by Peggy Blackmore, who is still a part of the HeadFirst family today. What do you do? The simple answer is that we’re a hair salon, but we’re really so much more than that. We offer free Wi-Fi, a book exchange and also display local art. Creativity is our passion. Why did you start this business? Peggy said that sometimes you don’t plan something — you just get a little nudge in the right direction and she knew that she would be well-supported. Now, 11 years later, it seems that she was right.

as a sales/technical representative during which time I called on Peggy for 10 years. I decided to make it my personal goal to own HeadFirst and to bring another dimension to the salon. Since I’ve been here, it has grown and grown and I like to think that it will continue to do so. What is the cornerstone of your business? A very loyal local clientele — the Ballito community is fantastic and very supportive.

What are your views on integrity in business? You never go wrong in doing what is right. What words comes to mind when you hear the word ‘Ballito’? The sun, the fun, the future... ‘down by the beach’. What does the future hold? Time will tell and that’s what keeps it exciting!

What’s your number one rule in business? Quality through professional products and service, backed by ethical values.

What do you know that your customers want? A professional service, in a friendly atmosphere, at a reasonable price. Biggest lesson learnt? The bigger the dream, the more important the team! When did you know that you were successful? I realized that HeadFirst was successful whilst working for Goldwell International

Cutting Edge Hair Salon

I was invited by Shelley to come and experience her salon at Lozi Park. I am always surprised at how this smallish salon has managed to fit in so much — it looks very classy with its chandeliers and then, of course, there are the wine glasses that water is served in... It really is all about class. When you define the phrase ‘cutting edge’, it means, new, trendy, current and forwardthinking and that, in a nutshell, is the Cutting Edge Salon. It is a busy salon and each of its four stylists has long-standing clients always coming in and out. The light banter — and deep conversations — show that the clients really are ‘part of the furniture’. The salon uses Schwarzkopf and Indola professional products, ranges that Shelley Stegen, the owner of the salon, really believes in. Indola is also from Schwarzkopf, but is a more affordable range of professional shampoo, conditioners, treatments and awesome products to manage all types of hair. Each stylist has their own style and speciality. Shelley and Tanya with over 20 years experience are known for colour, and especially for working their magic with blonde. Justin specialises in straight, clean, trendy haircuts and styles and gents cuts. The salon has been in Ballito for two years and is expanding in both staff and clientele and Shelley feels very blessed where she is and She also decided to thin out my very thick hair for the people around her. quite significantly, which is great as it feels much lighter. The dead ends are gone and the Shelley looked at my hair and colour and then new look feels great and we managed to keep suggested a slightly warmer look, especially all my length, too. Ballito Spa Review

Peluche Spa

We were recently invited to experience the brand new Peluche Spa at the Manor House on Manor Estates, a colonial-style house with all the good old original features still there — something which makes the house very special. Peluche Spa is an ideal place to recoup, with quiet, nature and old-style charm. Sweetness met us — with the biggest smile and friendliest face ever — and offered us some juice to start off with. We were then shown to our double treatment room. The spa, which has a no-frills, no-fuss kind of feel, is very new and really focused on the treatments and products used there. We started with a lomi lomi fullbody massage and I loved the fact that the massage tables are a nice size and very stable (which, yes, does make a difference to the comfort of the massage). Sweetness and Nanaza saw to both our massage and facial treatments. With three therapists, the salon caters for couples’ treatments, massages, facials, waxing, manicures and pedicures. The pedicure area is quite special, allowing you to look out over the courtyard and garden while you sit on comfy chairs. We then had our facials and we were each pampered with a Victorian Garden luxury facial. Each one has a unique fragrance and is completely natural and we loved the way it left our faces feeling afterwards. So, naturally, I had to do a little research on this product that I have not heard of before. The Victorian Garden is a unique company — there are very few businesses whose origins date back nearly 200 years! They’ve captured the very essence of vintage natural and organic products and brought them into the 21st century to craft beautiful personal care products using the flower and herb extracts so popular in times gone by. The pricing is very reasonable, so you can expect to enjoy your chosen treatment without all the unnecessary trappings and over-inflated pricing that goes with that. The spa accommodates couples, groups and individual treatments. This is the second spa to be opened by Sayuri (the owner) in the area — she also owns the one at Rain Farm. Yoga, spa pamper and bridal packages are available to suit your needs and budget and the skilled and friendly therapists are always ready to make sure that you get that special Peluche feeling.

The Victorian Garden : The company crafts twenty-first century versions of popular Victorian skin, body and bath care products. It has a unique history dating back to the Victorian era, when Victorian ladies handmade their own moisturizing creams, lotions and bath oils using herbs and flower extracts grown in their gardens, combined with beeswax from the apiaries which many middle- and upper-class Victorian households kept at the bottom of their gardens! Our oldest original recipe dates back to 1860. By today’s standards, some of the original recipes and the instructions given to make them may best be described as hairraising, but please don’t worry — we have left out the arsenic, lead and other toxic chemical ingredients and we’re focused on using as near 100 percent organic and natural ingredients as possible. You will not see us claim to be ‘100 percent organic’ — many don’t realise that ‘organic’ is primarily a form of agriculture and does not guarantee that an organic ingredient is safe, healthy or better than a natural ingredient. Every ingredient that we use must be pristine, clean, safe and healthy, be free of animal ingredients and give great results. We never compromise on our ethics.

rESTAURANT REVIEW Ballito

Great food

Words Justin Wendler

without the suit and tie

My wife and I were recently invited to try out the new menu at Boulevard 44, which is situated next to the Caledon Estate. For those of you who are not sure where that is, it is just across the road from the Umhlali Country Club, so it’s very convenient for those who live in that part of our town when you’re in the mood for a relaxing dinner and a refreshing cocktail. The restaurant is very attractively decorated in a modern, clean but relaxed style and we felt very chilled out and comfortable while we indulged ourselves in the menu and what it had to offer. Chef Cornelius Barnard, who is the new head Chef at Boulevard 44 — hence the new menu — has been at the pots and pans for 12 years and his new menu showcases some simple but really good food, all fresh and cooked from scratch. After introductions and a couple minutes to run through the appetising menu, it

was time to order. For starters, my wife ordered the Bruschetta topped with Biltong and Herb Salad and I had the Garlic and Spring Onion Mussels. The freshness was evident in both our starters and I was really impressed with the fresh greens and colours of my wife’s choice. I was equally happy with my dish, where the flavours and richness of the mussels was really, really good — indeed, they were some of the best that I have ever had and, to top it off, they came out of the kitchen very quickly. Mains for the wife was the Trio of Prawns — that’s three different styles of prawns on one plate, served with lemon and herb crème fresh and basmati rice. My wife really enjoyed the selection of prawns and was very satisfied. Being a meat-lover, I ordered a steak, but not just any steak — the Rump New Yorker. This rump is topped with all the good things… bacon and feta sauce where you can actually see the bacon and feta,

served with sweet potato fries and veg of the day. The rump was cooked to perfection and was a real treat. After our mains, we took some time to enjoy our cocktails and catch our breath and then it was time for some sweet stuff — Rooibos Crème Brûlée. This was a first for me, but it will not be the last! It comes highly recommended by me, so give it a try! Overall we were really delighted with Boulevard 44’s new menu and the quality of the food on offer. The menu has something for everyone, from burgers to a kids’ menu, from fish to steak and even a curry if you fancy a spicy evening. I really recommend that you venture over the bridge — you will not be let down!

Mason Jar vertical

Herb Garden DIY and pinterest projects are becoming the new craze lately, whether it’s an old palate or plank, or a cheap trip to the hardware store these days having inventive beautiful things doesn’t have to cost an arm or a leg but rather just an hour or two of your time and effort. As its woman’s month we will start off this ongoing feature with something a bit more simple and less hardy to get you going! First up we have a stunning Mason Jar herb garden! This allows you to have the freshest of herbs without them taking over the garden in a nice neat and attractive design. This is so simple to make and can easily be placed both inside and outside the house! You will need: • old wooden board • mason jars (Console / Jam Jar) • pipe clamps • triangle ring hangers • stainless hanging wire • picture hanger • black chalkboard paint & chalk • brush • hammer, nails and screwdriver • herbs You need to: • Space mason jars evenly on wooden board, and mark placement with a pencil in order to design and measure around. • Tape off rectangles on board, and paint with chalkboard paint as pictured above. This way, you can switch out herbs and change their labels accordingly. • Paint pipe clamps gold or preferred colour, and secure to wooden board by hammering a nail through the small holes in the pipe clamp. • At the back of the board, nail in ring hangers and tie on hanging wire. Or you could screw it straight into the wall! • Visit your local nursery and buy your favorite herbs, plant herbs in mason jars with potting soil. • Place mason jars into pipe clamps and tighten with a screwdriver. • Nail picture hanger into the wall, and hang your herb display! Homemade Lemonade Ingredients:

Directions:

1. • 2 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice (around 9-10 large lemons) • 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 cups superfine sugar • 3 cups water (room temperature) 2. • 5 cups ice water • 3-quart container with screwon lid

3.

Squeeze the lemons. Roll lemons on the counter. Press hard! This will make juicing them much easier. Cut lemons in half. (An adult should cut them for kids who have not been taught how to cut safely.) Extract the juice using a juicer until you have 2 cups of lemon juice. Mix the sugar. Add 3 cups of water and sugar to pitcher. Use the least amount first; you can always add more later. If you like your lemonade tart (as we do!), you won’t want to. Screw on lid and shake for 30 seconds or until sugar is dissolved. A minute or two after shaking the water should look clear. Make lemonade! Add lemon juice pouring it through a small strainer or slotted spoon to catch the seeds. Don’t worry if you don’t catch them all. That’s how people know it’s homemade. If you like pulp scoops some of it out of the strainer and add it along with the ice water. Screw on lid and shake again. Refrigerate and then enjoy!!! w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

Ballito Business Advice

5

WAYS TO INCREASE PROFITS

By Chris Smith| www.actioncoachsa.co.za/chrissmith

C

onventional business looks at sales from the standpoint of three variables, namely sales, expenses and profits defined by the formula: Sales - Expenses = Profits. In this narrow approach, each variable depends on the other forcing businesses to look at either increasing sales or decreasing expenses in order to influence profitability. There are only five ways to truly grow your business: Getting more leads, converting those leads into customers, getting customers to make bigger purchases at higher price points, getting them to buy more often and getting more sales at higher profit margins. If you increase all of those factors by just 10 percent, you can give your bottom line a massive boost. I want to share five simple, proven (and lowcost) strategies with you. Strategy 1 Find your bestselling product and increase the price by 10 percent. If you don’t know

what your strongest product is, now is the time to find out. Once you figure it out, boost the price on that item or service by 10 percent. It’s an increase so small, most people won’t even notice. Strategy 2 To increase your average Rand sale, create sales scripts for you (and your salespeople). Sales scripts help to frame your sales process, especially if you don’t consider yourself a natural ‘salesperson’. The sales script should also help initiate and build rapport, which leads to higher sales. Strategy 3 To increase your average number of transactions, create loyalty and referral programs. While a lot of companies use this strategy, many don’t use it correctly. To get the most out of a reward program, it should be targeted at your highest-yield customers - those truly loyal customers or clients who don’t haggle on price. This involves segmenting your client base. Done right, you can create both a rewards program and

a referral program that is profitable versus one that simply defaults to discounts or giveaways. Strategy 4 To increase your conversion rates create a guarantee, especially if none of your competitors have one. Guarantees are great ways to covert customers and establish long-term customer relationships. This is especially true in categories where guarantees are hard to “guarantee” or in industries that don’t offer any. Then advertise the guarantee. This will boost the number of referrals among current clients and increase the number of qualified leads. Strategy 5 To increase your number of leads, test and measure low-cost ways first; then move to paid advertising. Lead generation is actually the most costly of the profitboosting strategies, so start with low-cost ways you can track for results before you start spending thousands on an advertising campaign.

Another bright I.D.E.A By Jenni Rivett | jennirivett.blogspot.com

H

appy women’s month to all of you wonderful ladies out there! Hopefully you’re on top of your health and beauty game and not wasting time and money on expensive creams, potions, gadgets, and other beauty products in an attempt to improve your image. It might surprise you to know that a lean, healthy body accompanied by beautiful skin, hair and nails goes a lot deeper than relentlessly digging into your pockets! Taking control of the following healthrelated symptoms on an on-going basis will dramatically improve your health and beauty, forever. Inflammation, Dehydration, Estrogenic factors, Acidity. Inflammation is a major cause of aging – including wrinkling, crepey skin, sagging jawline, droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes and puffiness. You really are what you eat! And what you eat can rob you of your youth. So here comes the ‘get out of your life’ list. Obviously we do all have these things in moderation from time to time. Alcoholic beverages, bacon, refined breads, bagels, croissants, beef, cream cheese, cake, chocolate, coffee, cookies, most sweetened cereals, corn, dried fruit, duck, fruit juice, fried foods, flour, hard cheese (except feta and Parmesan), cream, honey, hot dogs, ice cream, Jams, margarine, muffins, noodles, pancakes, pastry, pies, pizza, pasta, pickles, popcorn, potatoes,

puddings, raisins, relish, white rice, soda (including diet), scones, sugar, tacos, waffles, whole milk. Dehydration: This causes major ageing and especially on your skin. Quite simple! Drink 6 – 8 glasses of filtered water per day. Your urine should be pale yellow as an indicator. Anything else will not hydrate your body. Limit your alcohol and caffeine intake too. Estrogenic Factors: There is a direct correlation between elevated estrogen and disorders involving obesity, blood sugar problems, elevated blood lipids, and high blood pressure. Progesterone is an “antiestrogenic” hormone that helps balance estrogenic activity in the body and low levels are associated with estrogen disorders and aging in women. Foods which act as a natural defence against excess estrogen are: Broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage, onion, garlic, citrus fruits, Omega 3 oils, wild-catch fatty fish, organic dairy (moderate servings),raw nuts and seeds, avocado, olives and their cold pressed oil, green vegetables, berries, papaya, pineapple, whole oats and barley, legumes (other than soy), spices (turmeric, oregano, thyme, rosemary, and sage), herbs (milk thistle, dandelion root, ginger) Acidity: The pH balance of the body is fundamental to our health. We function optimally when the pH balance is correct. It comes down to simple chemistry – the

“food” we eat, the fluid we drink – our lifestyle choices. Early signs and symptoms of being on the acidic side are: general fatigue, painful joints, low immunity, poor skin, hair and nail quality and really the list goes on. The most common cause of acid load is a lack of water which activates deep cleansing of the blood via the kidneys. The top five acidic substances in the modern diet are the ones we generally tend to love the most and are easily addictive: sugar, coffee, alcohol, carbonated drinks and refined flour based products. Thereafter it’s large quantities of animal protein and dairy products. Nicotine and stress are other major contributors to an acidic state. So the correct way to get this balance back and alkalinise yourself is to increase your vegetable and fruit intake and decrease the above acid-forming foods. I recommend a healthy balance of 2 fruit and 10 vegetable servings a day. The dark green leafy vegetables are particularly important to get every day. A serving is roughly ½ cup so you are aiming for between 4 and 5 cups a day, preferably raw, juiced or steamed. Besides cleaning out your bathroom cabinet and stocking up your kitchen with everything good, clean and fresh, get some regular exercise too, which will minimise the effects of all the above factors. Happy health and beauty! w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

An ode to women

With Tim Johnson Tim Johnson is a passionate local and a Director of Seeff Dolphin Coast | tim.johnson@seeff.com

In recognition of National Women’s Day on 9 August, I thought I’d have some fun and look at how differently men and woman view things. I think men get a bad rap, but I feel our significant others need to understand that we are hard-wired incredibly differently. To kick things off, I’ve outlined a few observations: Bathrooms A man has at most seven items in his bathroom - a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel from City Lodge. The average number of items in a typical woman’s bathroom is 236. A man would not be able to identify most of these items. Groceries A woman makes a list of things she needs and then goes to the store and buys these things. A man waits until the only items left in the fridge are half a lemon and something turning green. Then he goes grocery shopping. He buys everything that looks good and by the time he reaches the checkout counter he’s calling his wife to ask what he went there for. Names If Mary, Susan, Claire and Barbara go out for lunch, they will call each other Mary, Susan, Claire and Barbara. If Tim, Ryan, Don and Kelvin go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Tight Shorts, Creep, Bilbo, and Big Red. Dressing Up A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the garbage, answer the phone, read a book, and get the

mail. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals. Arguments Women always have the last word in an argument. Anything a man adds after that is the beginning of a new argument. Children A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dentist appointments, rugby games, romances, best friends, favourite foods, secret fears and hopes and dreams. A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house. On the topic of children, schooling has become a big talking point on the North Coast, but men and woman approach the situation a little differently. In 2011 my wife, like many mom’s to be, was petrified that our unborn child would not be able to get into a particular primary school in the area. This of course was a valid concern given the limited spaces available, but I had the attitude that we would make a plan and there wasn’t a big rush. With the mood swings of pregnancy very raw in my mind and still wishing to be married, I rather embarrassingly found myself putting down my 1 week old baby boy’s name for entry into the school in 2017. The ink had barely dried on the first entry form and I was handed an invoice for a registration fee for his high school application to be a part of the future matric class of 2029. I think it was a natural reaction to cast my mind forward 18 years to think about where I’d be, what I’d be doing and then rather scarily, wondering what the cost of a private school education would be and how many Rugby

World Cup trips I’d have to put off until my son had flown the nest. My second boy, who was due in October of 2013, had his name down before he was born as my wife was concerned all the spaces would have been taken up as he was being born so late in the year. My joke about having not planned his conception to result in an earlier birthday for school purposes didn’t go down well, but I think the reason he came out a month or so prematurely was to make his mother happy. Despite all this planning, he was still apparently number 17 on the waiting list. Fortunately, a number of excellent schooling options have become available in the area which is a sign of the area’s growth and demand for education. Another female pastime that has always interested me is the idea of ‘Book Club’. For years women have been engaging in these literary gatherings under the false assumption that their husbands believe that books are in fact discussed. In reality, the sum total of reading that takes place is to ascertain the vintage and make of the various wines on offer. Men are different in that if we want to sit around, chat to our mates and have a drink, we simply say that we’re going to the pub. Of course, the idea of this doesn’t always sit well with the wife, but at least we’re honest. Fortunately, I saw an email invite recently which referred to one such gathering as ‘Book/Wine club’. Finally the ladies have owned up to what they’re really doing, but the truth is that they deserve a night out every now and then, so we don’t mind. Happy Women’s Day!
