The FOL Guide Have you ever wondered why, at Escola Concept, we celebrate the end of the semester with the Festival of Learning? Celebrating learning means honoring the learning pathway, with its natural ups and downs, while inviting families to participate in the culmination of projects. Learners are fostered to bring ideas to life, creating prototypes, presentations, products and experiences for families to engage with. We know that the last editions of the Festival of Learning have been more restrictive and, therefore, we are happy to be able to open the doors of the campus in 2022 for the whole community to participate in. The “FOL Guide” that you are going to read now brings a summary of the main projects developed by each class, with a preview of how and when they are going to be presented. Enjoy the reading and the event!

O Guia FOL Você já se perguntou por que, na Escola Concept, comemoramos o final do semestre com o Festival of Learning? Celebrar o aprendizado significa honrar o caminho do aprendizado, com seus naturais altos e baixos, ao mesmo tempo em que convidamos as famílias a participarem da culminância dos projetos. Os estudantes são incentivados a dar vida às ideias, criando protótipos, apresentações, produtos e experiências para as famílias se envolverem. About the learning journey: Throughout the project that began in 2022, we focused on getting children into the school environment, getting to know new friends, and understanding a new routine. We carefully created provoking settings, to promote and enhance opportunities for exploration and experimentation using unstructured materials and everyday objects (which are not classified as industrialized toys). These enriching and stimulating environments promote healthy growth and brain development, providing love, emotional support, learning opportunities, and peer interaction. Children need to play and discover the world for themselves to achieve their own discoveries and inventions. Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Ao longo do projeto que iniciou em 2022, nós nos concentramos na ambientação das crianças ao espaço escolar, convivendo com novos amigos e compreendendo nova rotina. Cuidamos para criar ambientes provocadores, promover e potencializar oportunidades de exploração e experimentação usando materiais não estruturados e objetos do uso cotidiano (que não são classificados como brinquedos industrializados). Esses ambientes enriquecedores e estimulantes promovem o crescimento saudável e o desenvolvimento cerebral, estimulando amor, apoio emocional, oportunidades de aprendizado e interação entre colegas. As crianças precisam brincar e descobrir o mundo por si mesmas, para que façam as próprias descobertas e invenções.

The proposal connects the first to the second project, guided by the essential question "How can my body movements help me build self-knowledge?" About the learning journey: The theme of the project emerged from the natural interest of children in this age group to play with carts and unstructured materials, which paved the way for various situations to explore mathematics. Math, in Toddlers, means sorting, measuring, counting and developing problem-solving skills. We stimulated the student's curiosity and interest in the means of transport, so they could identify and recognize various means of transport and their characteristics, expanding their perception about sizes, the number of people transported, spatial notions, movements and friction. We also worked with traffic signs: traffic lights, crosswalks, signs, etc., which involved colors and geometric shapes.

Toddlers 2 learners invite parents and families to come and explore forces, shapes and materials. As crianças do Toddlers 2 convidam as famílias para explorar forças, formas e materiais.

Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: O tema do projeto surgiu a partir do interesse natural das crianças dessa faixa etária em brincar com carrinhos e materiais não estruturados, que abriu caminho para diversas situações de exploração da Matemática. Matemática, no Toddlers, envolve classificar, medir, contar e desenvolver habilidades de resolução de problemas. Estimulamos a curiosidade e o interesse pelos meios de transporte, para que pudessem identificar e reconhecer cada veículo e suas características, ampliando percepção sobre tamanho, número de pessoas transportadas, noções espaciais, movimentos e atritos. Também trabalhamos com sinais de trânsito - semáforos, faixas de pedestres, placas etc., que envolveu cores e formas geométricas.

About the learning journey: Through the project “The very hungry caterpillar”, children had several opportunities to develop mathematical skills due to the amount of food consumed by the caterpillar, as well as learning the days of the week and recognizing numbers from 1 to 5. Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Por meio do projeto “Uma lagarta muito comilona”, as crianças tiveram oportunidades de desenvolver habilidades matemáticas devido à quantidade de alimento consumido pela lagarta, além de aprender os dias da semana e reconhecer números de 1 a 5.

As they get to know a variety of ways that other families and communities celebrate the holidays, birthdays, traditional dates, festivals, and community meetings, among other celebrations, students are encouraged to appreciate and respect the diversity that exists in society and the positive contributions of various cultural groups. Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Os estudantes estão explorando o mundo fora de sua casa, de seu bairro. À medida que vão conhecendo as diversas formas que outras famílias e comunidades celebram festas, aniversários, datas tradicionais, feriados… são encorajados a apreciar e respeitar a diversidade que existe na sociedade e as contribuições positivas de vários grupos culturais.

About the learning journey: By reflecting on interesting journeys and places where paths can lead us, Pre-k4 educators planned daily trips with their learners. Sometimes by car, sometimes by walking – perhaps riding a train, flying in an airplane, or setting sail on a boat across the sea. All we needed was our imagination and sometimes thought-provoking settings to introduce learning related to each of the trips. Where would you like to go today? Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Ao refletir sobre jornadas e lugares interessantes para onde os caminhos podem nos levar, os educadores do Pre-K4 planejaram viagens diárias com seus estudantes. About the learning journey: In this project, students learned about different geometric shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, etc.), and related them to the lines and shapes found in famous paintings. They explored three-dimensional shapes (cubes, pyramids, cones, and cylinders). In addition, there was intense work with the new vocabulary and writing.
Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Neste projeto, os estudantes aprenderam sobre formas geométricas (retângulos, quadrados, trapézios etc.) e as relacionaram com as linhas e formas encontradas em pinturas famosas. Exploraram formas tridimensionais (cubos, pirâmides, cones e cilindros). Além disso, houve intenso trabalho com o novo vocabulário e a escrita.

Art Gallery with the exhibition of students’ works. Stations with the worked artists such as Picasso, Miró, Kandinsky, Volpi, Portinari and Vincent van Gogh. Toys - How are my toys related to sustainability? Como meus brinquedos estão relacionados à sustentabilidade?
About the learning journey: Toys come in many shapes and sizes. They are made of different materials but all are designed for us to have fun with, to teach new skills and to exercise our bodies and our imagination. This project involved research and explorations on traditional toys and games in Brazilian culture. In Science, they figured out how to sort toys based on what they are made of, which materials can be bent, squashed, twisted or stretched, and which materials are best for making a bath toy. Children practiced different habits of the mind, such as working in groups, exploring the imagination, solving problems, and collecting data using the senses. Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Os brinquedos vêm em muitas formas e tamanhos. Eles são feitos de materiais diferentes, mas todos projetados para divertir, ensinar habilidades e exercitar o corpo e a imaginação. Este projeto envolveu pesquisas e explorações sobre brinquedos e brincadeiras tradicionais na cultura brasileira. Em Ciências, eles descobriram como classificar brinquedos com base no que são feitos, que materiais podem ser dobrados, amassados, torcidos ou esticados, que materiais são melhores para fazer um brinquedo de banho. As crianças praticaram diferentes hábitos da mente, como trabalhar em grupo, explorar a imaginação, resolver problemas e coletar dados usando os sentidos.

About the learning journey: The poetry work children do in second grade builds a foundation to develop precise language use and attention to detail. After all, poets plan, write with detail, revise, and make reading-writing connections—we learned a lot from their learning journey! How are communities impacted by cultural diversity? Como as comunidades são impactadas pela diversidade cultural?
About the learning journey: This project has as a narrative the path in Brazilian culture since the arrival of the Portuguese and their meeting with the indigenous natives. We explored maps and the changes in cartographic representation over time. The Festa Junina also offered context for the investigation of popular festivals in our country; students collected memories of their families. Cordel was part of the studies on Brazilian language and literature, both in writing, reading, and orality. In addition, students were encouraged to establish a relationship between the Brazilian culture and another culture they chose to investigate. Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Este projeto tem como narrativa o percurso na cultura brasileira desde a chegada dos portugueses e seu encontro com os indígenas nativos. Exploramos mapas e mudanças na representação cartográfica ao longo do tempo. A Festa Junina também ofereceu contexto para a investigação das festas populares em nosso país; os estudantes recolheram memórias da família. Cordel fez parte dos estudos abordando língua e literatura brasileiras, tanto na escrita quanto na leitura e na oralidade. What if we went back 10,000 years in time? E se voltássemos 10.000 anos no tempo?
About the learning journey: In this project, learners studied PreHistory, analyzing some historical facts, such as the nomadism and the agricultural revolution, reading about them, and writing historical narratives to describe them to comprehend and explain the circumstances of those historical moments. Aiming at understanding the beginning of the civilizations, learners also made sense of the Earth cycle and the phases of the moon, exploring and investigating how, when, and why these events happen. The culmination of learning is a prehistoric village. Students will reproduce it using different materials to make clothes, tools, houses, cooking objects, plantations, and cave paintings, representing human life 10,000 years ago and inviting the school community to travel back in time. Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Neste projeto, os alunos estudaram a Pré-História, analisando fatos como nomadismo e revolução agrícola, lendo e escrevendo narrativas históricas com objetivo de compreender e explicar as circunstâncias desses momentos, das descobertas sobre a pré-história. Para entender o início das civilizações, conheceram o ciclo da Terra e as fases da Lua, explorando e investigando como, quando e por que esses eventos acontecem. O ponto culminante da aprendizagem foi uma aldeia pré-histórica. Os estudantes vão reproduzi-la usando diferentes materiais para confeccionar roupas, ferramentas, casas, objetos de cozinha, plantações e pinturas rupestres, representando a vida humana de 10.000 anos atrás e convidando a comunidade escolar a viajar no tempo.
O que vai acontecer no FOL?
The presentation will be a travel back in time to prehistory and in the project's development. Everybody is invited to travel with 4th graders to understand the project development and how learners could find the answers to the essential questions, besides visiting a Paleolithic Cave and a Neolithic Village. A apresentação será uma viagem no tempo à Pré-história. Todos estão convidados a viajar com os estudantes do 4º Ano para entender o desenvolvimento do projeto e como eles puderam encontrar respostas para questões essenciais, além de visitar uma caverna paleolítica e uma aldeia neolítica.

How can we safely explore Mars? Como podemos explorar Marte com segurança?
About the learning journey: In this project, learners took the role of space engineers who were asked to design an outpost to begin the process of human occupation on Mars. With this challenge, they learned about the Solar System and basic concepts of astronomy. They researched Cartesian plan, energy production, waste management, and developed inquiry skills. They materialized their research by building the Mars base in Minecraft Education to present to the school community. Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Neste projeto, os estudantes assumiram o papel de engenheiros espaciais desafiados a projetar um posto avançado para iniciar o processo de ocupação humana em Marte. Com esse desafio, construíram conhecimentos sobre o Sistema Solar e conceitos básicos de astronomia. Pesquisaram sobre plano cartesiano, produção de energia, gestão de resíduos, além de desenvolver habilidades de investigação. Materializaram suas pesquisas construindo a

base Mars no Minecraft Education para apresentar à comunidade escolar.

Families will dive into Mars (in Minecraft!) and get to know all the facilities of the first human outpost ever built on the red planet. In the end, they are going to sing our song with us! As famílias vão mergulhar em Marte (no Minecraft!) e conhecer as instalações do primeiro posto avançado humano já construído no planeta vermelho. No final, vão cantar nossa música junto com a gente!

About the learning journey: Learners raised several problems regarding the waste of water in our city and decided to develop a system to reuse rainwater and take advantage of this water in a space of the school chosen by them, in this case, a garden. They were made aware of the many ways to save and reuse water. Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Os estudantes levantaram problemas em relação ao desperdício de água em nossa cidade e decidiram desenvolver um sistema de reaproveitamento da água da chuva e aproveitamento dela em um espaço da escola escolhido - uma horta. Foram conscientizados sobre as muitas maneiras de economizar e reutilizar a água.
What will happen in the FOL? The presentation will be divided into two moments. A moment in which learners will introduce families to their Design Thinking journey, and another when they will explore the solutions created by them. The final product was a cistern to collect rainwater with sensors. These sensors identify the water level and reuse it to automatically water a garden whenever the soil requires. A apresentação será dividida em dois momentos - um momento em que os alunos apresentarão às famílias a sua jornada de Design Thinking, e outro em que vão explorar as soluções criadas por eles. O produto final foi uma cisterna para captar a água da chuva com sensores que identificam o nível da água e reaproveitar essa água para regar automaticamente um jardim sempre que o solo estiver muito seco.

How can grade 7 explore the SDG Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure to connect producers and consumers for rural and urban populations using a digital solution? Como o 7º Ano pode explorar o ODS, “Indústria, Inovação e Infraestrutura”, para conectar produtores e consumidores a populações rurais e urbanas usando uma solução digital?
About the learning journey: The project sought solutions for rural producers who do not have internet access in their homes, so they could register and sell their products, even if they are outsourced. Learners identified the lack of internet access for many people in different social classes and places in Brazil. Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: O projeto buscou soluções para produtores rurais que não têm acesso à internet em sua residência, para que possam cadastrar e vender seus produtos, mesmo que sejam terceirizados. Os estudantes identificaram a falta de acesso à internet para muitas pessoas em diferentes classes sociais e lugares no Brasil.

Grade 7 learners developed an application to register the products of rural producers who do not have internet access to post and monitor their sales. So the application does all the e-commerce for them.

A apresentação será dividida em dois momentos - um momento em que os estudantes apresentarão às famílias a sua jornada de Design Thinking, e outro em que vão explorar as soluções criadas. Os estudantes do 7º Ano desenvolveram um aplicativo para cadastrar os produtos dos produtores rurais que não têm acesso à internet para postar e acompanhar suas vendas. Esse aplicativo fará o e-commerce para os produtores.

About the learning journey: The project deals with the inclusion of parks and public green areas. After raising many cases and needs of people with different disabilities, Grade 8 learners focused on creating access to an inclusive playground toy that brings the sensation of skateboarding. Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: O projeto trata da inclusão de parques e áreas verdes públicas. Depois de levantar casos e necessidades de pessoas com deficiência, os estudantes do 8º Ano se concentraram em criar acesso a um brinquedo de playground inclusivo que traz a sensação de andar de skate.
What will happen in the FOL? The presentation will be divided into two moments. A moment in which learners will introduce families to their Design Thinking journey, and another when they will explore the solutions created by them. Grade 8 learners developed a structure for the disabled (with some kind of visual, mental, among others impairments) to have the sensation of skateboarding. A apresentação será dividida em dois momentos - um momento em que os alunos apresentarão às famílias a sua jornada de Design Thinking, e outro em que vão explorar as soluções criadas. Os estudantes do 8º Ano desenvolvem uma estrutura para pessoas com deficiência ( algum tipo de deficiência visual, mental, entre outras) para terem a sensação de andar de esqueite.

About the learning journey: This project aimed at providing practical solutions, both material and digital, to help fight poverty in our communities. Learners explored, in a thorough research process, the topic of poverty and its roots, and explored innovative thinking and technological tools to bring solutions as a Digital Learning platform and a Vertical Growing Farm.
Sobre a jornada de aprendizagem: Este projeto teve como objetivo oferecer soluções práticas, tanto materiais quanto digitais, para ajudar a combater a pobreza em nossas comunidades. Os estudantes exploraram, em um processo de pesquisa minucioso, o tema da pobreza e suas raízes, pensamento inovador e ferramentas tecnológicas para trazer soluções como uma plataforma de Aprendizagem Digital e uma Horta Vertical.

Digital Learning platforms, Vertical Growing Farms, and other solutions will be presented.
