A place for the whole community

On April 7, New Providence Baptist Church (NPBC), 2411 Beaver Valley Pike, New Providence, held a groundbreaking for a new fellowship hall. After the church’s Sunday service, many congregants joined members of the building committee in kicking off the construction project and celebrating the achievement, which was made possible by two years of fundraising initiatives.

on the land where the original church was torn down, will serve as a dedicated space for various youth events and free community meals for anyone in the Southern End who may not be able to afford a hot dinner.

“This will be a place for the entire community.”

The project began after members of NPBC realized the church’s children had no facility to call their own, and there was no place where the church could hold youth programs. The congregation was also growing quickly, and the church wanted to acquire a large commercial kitchen to serve its members as well as the surrounding community. “The fellowship hall is definitely something the Southern End needs,” said Meek Rineer, a member of NPBC’s building and fundraising committees. “It’s not only for the church; this will be a place for the entire community, and it will allow us to reach out to those who are less fortunate.”

Over the last two years, members of NPBC’s fundraising committee have hosted events such as benefit auctions, barbecues and back-to-school activities to raise the money required to establish the fellowship hall. The project has also been made possible by individual donations by community members, and many children

EPC Golf Outing to drive out homelessness

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians are known to be homeless on any given day. Housing instability and crises can stem from a multitude of factors, affecting men, women and children across the state. In Lancaster and Chester counties, nonprofit organization Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is working hard to combat homelessness by offering a variety of

resources to individuals who are experiencing a housing crisis.

One of GSS’ largest fundraisers is an annual golf outing that is made possible by a partnership with Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). The 17th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 7, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Golfers may also purchase tickets for prize drawings that will feature items donated by businesses in the local community. Food will

Like many residents of Solanco, Colin Buffington grew up in Quarryville, where he attended Smith Middle School and Solanco High School. But in January 2019, Colin made a decision that would completely change the course of his life: Colin and his wife, Rebecca, moved to Honduras, where they have served as missionaries through the Legacy of Hope Foundation for the last five years.

Legacy of Hope is a nonprofit organization that provides emergency care for children who have

been abandoned or face a crisis in Western Honduras. The foundation’s programs include foster care, transitional housing and family preservation initiatives.

“Our goal is to view orphan care as a family-centric solution as opposed to institutional care,” Colin said. “We place the emphasis on family care, putting them on a path to see what a healthy family looks like to help them grow in that environment and deal with trauma.”

Colin serves as Legacy of Hope’s sustainability director, a role that involves locating funding and resources for the organization.

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. “On the same day someone becomes a sponsor, a real person on the other end has a place to call home and has security for tomorrow because of them,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of GSS. “We’re so grateful for the support from EPC and its efforts to support organizations like us. It’s impressive how much dedication and time they put into this event.”

On average, GSS has served 300 people per day and 72,000 meals every year since its founding in 1999. The organization, which began with a single location in Phoenixville, has since expanded to include additional facilities in Lancaster city, Coatesville and Kennett Square, along with a new office Ephrata, which was built last year. The continued expansions have allowed GSS to greatly increase the size of its staff, in addition to the number of people it is able to serve through its programs - and it couldn’t come at a better time. “We really are serving record levels of people; we’re on pace to serve 800 women and children this year, which is a 25% increase from 2023,” Hoffer said. “Our focus is on continuing to respond to the needs of our communities across Lancaster and Chester counties.”

that comes from individuals and businesses in the community. “What we do provides such a critical, basic need, but the reality is that 98% of our budget comes from the good will of the people in our communities,” said Hoffer. “It keeps our doors open and our programs running.”

In addition to coordinating donation campaigns, Colin has worked with Honduran coffee farmers to establish a brand in the United States. All of the brand’s profits are primarily used to fund Legacy of Hope’s crisis care facility, which functions as a safe haven for children the police find living on the street. Legacy of Hope watches over the children until local child protection services can find a family they can live with. “Many of these cases are children who have been abandoned and are seeking international adoption,” Colin said. “(The program) gives them a sense of what that looks like before they find their forever family.”

Rebecca introduced Colin to Legacy of Hope after they became married in 2018. Rebecca, who specializes in advocating for foster care via social media, had lived in Honduras for two years prior to their marriage, and her sister and brother-in-law, Mariann and Matt Spangler, are the organization’s founders. At first, Colin was hesitant to make such a drastic move, but he said a spiritual calling inspired him to take the leap. “I lost my father when I was 2 years old. I never knew what foster care or child services were like because I was blessed by a strong and amazing mother who cared for my brother and I,” Colin added. “I was also blessed with a grandfather, coaches and so many people in my life who acted as father figures. I wanted to be that for other children as well.”

Since moving to Honduras, Colin and Rebecca have fostered five children together. The couple is currently in the process of adopting 4-year-old Archer, who was abandoned on the side of the road as an infant. Although Colin and Rebecca were told they would never be able to adopt Archer due to Honduran laws, they were able to proceed to the fundraising portion of the adoption process. Colin and Rebecca’s other son, Allan, is 2 years old.

Colin’s mother, Debbie Lowery, has organized a yard sale fundraiser to help cover the adoption costs. The event will take place at Joyfully Made Fellowship, 75 Mount Hope Road, Quarryville, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 26, and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. Donations of clean and readyto-sell items may be dropped off at Joyfully Made Fellowship from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, April 24 and 25.
