Kauffman has titled her speech “Training Complete,” and in it, she will liken graduating to preparing to take on a new job. “Now we will go out to do the job on our own, with help, obviously,” she stated. Kauffman said she was inspired to audition to speak by her participation in GSHS activities. “I wanted to stay involved and be part of the ceremony and give advice to my peers as we move on,” she said. She is glad she attended GSHS because of the commitment of school faculty members. “I think we have really great teachers and administrators,” she pointed

out. “They aren’t here just to do a job; they’re here to invest in us as people.” Following graduation, Kauffman plans to attend DeSales University in Center Valley, where she will study medicine in an accelerated physician assistant program.

Whenry titled her speech “Gifts of the Mundane,” noting, “It’s all about taking in the small things.” Whenry went on to note that small things have significance that is not necessarily recognized. “We always want big things. We forget to take in the small things that make our

When Alan Noll, Mike Martin, Ron Folker, and Lemar Martin gathered at the Memorial Day marker at St. Stephen Church recently, a spirited discussion broke out about how long each had participated in the annual Memorial Day Pilgrimage organized by the United Veterans’ Council (UVC) of New Holland. According to Mike, the other three men were selling themselves short on the number of years they had taken part. “I’ve been doing it at least 40, and I would have thought all of you were over 40 too,” he said. Finally, the four agreed that all had been involved for at least 30 years.

On Monday, May 27, the Ceremonial Units of the UVC of New Holland will conduct the 102nd pilgrimage to cemeteries in eastern Lancaster County. Units will form at 6:30 a.m. at the American Legion in New Holland and will leave at 6:45 a.m. to conduct services at 12 area cemeteries.

Area veterans are invited to participate in the ceremonies. Members of the UVC would like to see younger veterans get involved in helping to preserve the tradition of the pilgrimage. The approximate time schedule of the ceremonies at each location is Ranck’s United Methodist Church at 7 a.m.;

“Dreams for Life” fundraiser posted

The 13th annual Dreams for Life fundraiser will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 31 and June 1, at Paradise Park, 6 London Vale Road, Paradise.

On May 31, the USA Patriots amputee softball team will compete against the Dreams for Life All-Star team at 7 p.m. and against local first responders at 8:30 p.m. A homerun derby will take place between games, and 10 spots are available for a fee on a first-come, first-served basis. A pregame show at 6:30 p.m. will include a rifle salute and the national anthem. People are advised to bring chairs, as bleacher seating is limited. Whenry said that as a band member, she has enjoyed listening to senior speeches at commencement since her freshman year. “I loved them, and I wanted to be part of something I loved,” she stated. In the fall, Whenry will attend Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where she will major in interior design. Her goal is to take part in the accelerated master’s program in sustainable design. Whenry said she is glad she attended GSHS because of all the friendships and relationships

she has made. “There have been opportunities to be part of small communities and clubs, and I have enjoyed getting to know a lot of people and working with a lot of people through the years,” Whenry stated.

Both girls expressed gratitude to those who have helped them reach this point. “Thanks to everybody,” said Kauffman.

“It isn’t just us,” added Whenry. “We were inspired by people all around us.”

Tickets are necessary to attend the graduation ceremony.

PACSAR to hold chicken barbecue

Pennsylvania Canine Search and Rescue (PACSAR) will hold its annual chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. until sold out. Food will be available at Horst Farm Market, 640 Reading Road (Route 625), East Earl, as well as at Weaver’s Store,

A 5K run will begin at 9 a.m. on June 1 and will be timed by Pretzel City Sports. Awards will be presented in various age groups. Registration will open at 7:30 a.m. There is a fee to participate. chicken sandwiches, shrimp, fries, soft pretzels, salad, smoothies, and ice cream.

The proceeds of this fundraiser will go to Four Diamonds at Hershey Medical Center. Four Diamonds helps families with children who have cancer. The fund helps to pay for what insurance does not cover, including prescriptions, transportation, and meal passes to use at the cafeteria for parents with a child in the hospital.
