“Forever ... Never Forgotten”

“Be a part of one of Maytown’s oldest traditions - honoring our fallen soldiers on Memorial Day,” said Linda Good, who is helping to organize activities in the town on Monday, May 27. The holiday will begin with the annual Antique, Art, Craft and Collectible Show on East High Street and around Maytown square from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The show is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809, and proceeds will benefit veterans.

At 12:30 p.m., a ceremony will be held in the square to honor Maytown veterans. Members of the Bainbridge Band will provide music, and wreaths will be placed on the veterans’ markers. The names of Maytown veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice will be read. The ceremony will end with a benediction and the playing of taps.

Immediately following the ceremony, all children and families are invited to help decorate graves of local veterans with flowers provided by Floral Designs of Mount Joy. Anyone who would like to help should meet at the Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, 11 E. Elizabeth St. After decorating graves in the Reformed cemetery, the group will walk to the Lutheran and Union cemeteries at St. John’s Lutheran Church,

11 N. Queen St., to decorate the graves of veterans there.

A second ceremony to dedicate engraved bricks will be held in the square at 2 p.m. and will feature songs sung by Sandy Heisey.

At 4 p.m., the annual Memorial Day parade will begin, stepping off from Legion Park. Dennis Goodhart will be the grand marshal. An Army

veteran who served in Vietnam, he lives in Maytown with his wife, Gail.

“The theme of the parade is ‘Forever … Never Forgotten,’” Good said. “The parade is bigger and better this year, with six bands and six floats.”

Families and groups are invited to compete for prizes by decorating their entry to match the theme. Participants may walk,

ride a bike or ride on a float. There will be four monetary prizes, and judging will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the parade lineup on West High Street. Veterans who would like to participate in the parade are welcome.

All entrants must preregister with Janie Garber to participate in the parade. To sign up, contact Garber at jgarber416@ gmail.com or 717-940-0037.

There’s power in sound. In fact, sound can be healing, said Lana Ryder, founding director and senior instructor of Soundwise School of Harmonic Therapy. Ryder will present an introduction to the technique of sound healing during a program at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. It will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 3.

Sound healing is an ancient wellness practice for healing, relaxation and self-care that uses sounds made by musical instruments like chimes, gongs and singing bowls. Studies have suggested that sound healing may be able to reduce stress and pain, as well as improve overall well-being, Ryder said.

“Sound therapy induces the parasympathetic nervous system so that a person is able to receive the potential benefits of self-healing from lowered blood pressure, respiratory and heart rate; increase nitric oxide levels; and stimulate the vagus nerve to boost immunity,” she said, noting that sound healing may also help with anxiety, depression and insomnia.

The library program will feature a free 30-minute sound meditation and a question-and-answer period

CEF to offer summer programs for kids

Child Evangelism Fellowship of Lancaster County (CEF) is celebrating its 80th year of reaching children with the Good News of Jesus in the local community. Many people are familiar with the afterschool Good News Club programs that are held in the public schools, but they may not be aware that CEF also offers summer programs.

Teens and young adults complete a rigorous training program called Christian Youth in Action (CYIA) to serve with the ministry. These young people, along with CEF staff members,

devote their summers to sharing the Gospel with children. All workers and hosts of clubs must complete several required background checks to ensure the safety of all children.

This summer, CEF is partnering with four churches that will host vacation Bible school (VBS) with the theme “One Way.” VBS will be held on Mondays to Fridays. The program is open to children ages 5 to 12, and it will include Bible lessons, missionary stories, games, Christ-centered songs, crafts, and Bible verse memorization.

Children may attend vacation Bible school and 5-Day Clubs through CEF this summer. See CEF pg 7

Rolling along for Brittany’s Hope

Hop on your bike for a ride through the countryside on Sunday, June 30, and you can help orphaned and at-risk children. The third annual Biking for Brittany event will benefit Brittany’s Hope, an organization that helps families adopt children with special needs.

Biking for Brittany will feature two ride options: a metric century ride of 62 miles and a metric half-century ride of 31 miles. Rolling starts will take place every 15 minutes between 7:30 and 9 a.m. at the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.

“Biking for Brittany begins and ends at the Star Barn,” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope. “Cyclists will ride along the beautiful waterfronts¬†and through the rolling hills and picturesque landscape of Elizabethtown, Hershey and surrounding counties. Biking for Brittany is not timed, so you can enjoy the ride the way you want to ride.”

Because the ride is noncompet-

itive, organizers wanted to add a new feature this year - Strava segments, or stretches of the course where riders can compete against each other and compare times. “A metric century and metric half-century bike ride is challenging in and of itself, but Biking for Brittany is not a race,” Myers shared. “Many of our riders are competitive, so the Strava segments add a bit of competition without making it an all-out race. There are three segments - all in the metric century ride - that will allow riders, if they choose, to compete with other riders and race against the clock.”

The idea for Biking for Brittany came from a volunteer, Myers said. “There are, thankfully, many wonderful nonprofits in our area.

The challenge with that is to get the word about Brittany’s Hope out to other audiences,” she explained. “One of our volunteers and gala committee co-chair, Molly Stager, is a member of the biking community and realized they are a great group to spread the word about Brittany’s Hope to. Elizabethtown and surrounding areas are also beautiful and perfect for biking.”

Capital campaign workshop set

The Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO) will offer a workshop titled “Are You Ready for a Capital Campaign?” on Tuesday, June 4, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

In this interactive session, consultant Trina Walker and former library director Roberta Greene will cover the building blocks to have in place before launching a capital campaign. Walker and

Greene will share their campaign experience, a 10-step assessment tool to help measure an organization’s readiness to proceed, and advice on developing areas that are not quite ready. This session is appropriate for board members, executive directors, and fund development staff members and volunteers.

All attendees are asked to join by webcam and actively partic -

ipate. This session will not be recorded. Anyone who is unable to attend may email Christina Spadaro at christina@pano.org to be added to a waitlist for future workshops.

There is a fee, with a discount for PANO members. Special rates for groups of four to 10 individuals are available.

To register, visit https://tinyurl .com/CapitalCampaignWorkshop.

proceeds from the event will go to support orphaned and at-risk children. Brittany’s Hope funds grants to adoptive families and also provides humanitarian support to children in the organization’s partner children’s homes.

Along the Biking for Brittany route, themed rest stops will be run by Keller Williams Elite Real Estate teams. The biking event offers a fun and challenging way to support the mission of Brittany’s Hope, Myers said.

“From e-bikes to race bikes, all are welcome,” she stated. “There is a fun post-ride event to include burgers and dogs on the grill, ice cream, music and a few cool cycling-related vendors.”

For more information on Biking for Brittany, visit www.biking forbrittany.org or call Brittany’s Hope at 717-367-9614. Online registration will end on Thursday, June 27, but day-of registration will be available at the race start.

Mt. Hope will mark 55th birthday with picnic and one-day give

Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community is turning 55, and you’re invited to the party. The nonprofit will host an old-fashioned outdoor picnic from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. It will take place at 3026 Mt. Hope Home Road, Manheim, and will be held rain or shine.

“We are thrilled again to host an old-fashioned picnic and birthday celebration outside on our campus,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement at Mt. Hope. “Mt. Hope invites everyone to attend this fun gathering. Everyone from our residents, team members to board members, local businesses and churches, family and friends and neighbors to Mt. Hope are excited to get together for a wonderful time of fellowship and delicious grilled picnic foods.”

The meal will include a choice of grilled cheeseburgers or hot dogs with all the fixings, Mt. Hope’s baked beans and coleslaw, potato chips, cookies and assorted drinks. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets

and favorite yard games. Musical entertainment will be provided, and proceeds from the picnic will support the residents of Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.

John and Joyce Wagner, longtime Manheim community residents and former Mt. Hope board members, described Mt. Hope as “one of Lancaster County’s best-kept secrets,” said John, whose mother was a resident at the community for almost 27 years until she died at age 104. “Mt Hope (makes) it a priority to take care of those who need financial assistance as well as physical care, and that’s why their mission statement is ‘to minister to the least of these,’” John stated.

Mt. Hope is currently in the midst of a capital campaign to build new cottages on the campus and continue its mission of serving seniors and people with disabilities. Proceeds from the picnic as well as the second annual Love Mt. Hope Giving Day will benefit Mt. Hope. The one-day give will be held on Sunday, June 2.

”(This is) a chance to pay it forward and together, we can change

Engage

lives,” Wilson explained, noting that donations will impact both current and future residents. “(We) encourage people to help us reach our one-day goal of $20,000.”

She encourages people to come to the picnic for a day of fellowship while also learning about Mt. Hope.

“It’s a nice time to enjoy the scenery and the peaceful outdoors with wildlife and beautifully landscaped grounds,” she said. “This is also a welcome invitation for anyone who wants to see where we are located, hear about who we are, the work we do and hear about our exciting new cottage building plans, view architectural renderings of the proposed new cottages and simply relax in the

rolling farmlands of Manheim. You’re invited to come join us for this fun picnic with great food and fellowship.”

To reserve a meal or for more information about donating to support Mt. Hope, contact Wilson at advancement@mthope nazarene.org or 717-682-8026. There is a minimum suggested donation for each meal. Donations for the one-day give may be made at www.mthopenazarene.org.

for people to learn more about the healing effects of sound. “We will learn how sound therapy can benefit us through not only hearing it but by entrainment,” Ryder stated. “We will learn how to choose a qualified practitioner and experience a calming, relaxing group sound session using a variety of instruments.”

Affectionately called “Sound Mama,” Ryder is well-known throughout the region as a sound

therapy educator and mentor. She has been sharing the healing power of sound, voice and music for 50 years. She began using her voice as a healing instrument in music ministry. After attending lectures from Mitch Gaynor, former chief of oncology at Strang Cancer Prevention Institute, Ryder was inspired to further study the benefits of sound therapy. A lifelong learner, she continues to study with globally renowned masters of sound. She has developed a variety of unique ways to use sound in energy healing and bodywork, including reiki and massage.

Ryder’s specialty made her an appealing library guest, said Stephanie Funk, operations coordinator for the library. “We are constantly striving to bring new programs to our community, and this was a program we had never held at our library. Several of our patrons we spoke to about it were excited at the possibility,” she said. “When searching for a reputable,

knowledgeable, passionate practitioner in our community, we found Lana, and once we met with her and saw her love for the subject and excitement to share it with others, we knew she would be the perfect partner.”

Ryder hopes people will come to the library program to learn more about the technique and possibly discover a new method of healing.

“Anyone interested in integrative medicine and natural healing and the potential healing benefits of sound, voice and music is encouraged to attend,” she said.

Although the program is free to attend, registration is required. To register, call the library at 717-6531510 or visit https://mslibrary.org. For more information on Ryder, visit https://soundwisehealth.com.

Art exhibited at MHS Museum

The Maytown Historical Society (MHS) Museum’s newest exhibit features the artwork of Dolores Hackenberger. Hackenberger, who has been referred to as the “Grandma Moses of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country,” has painted the colorful Amish people and culture for many years. Her distinctive folk-art style vividly depicts the simple and charming traditions of the Amish neighbors with whom she has worked and visited throughout her life in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Hackenberger has won or received awards in 20 of 25 competitive shows in which she entered from 1960 onward. She loves antiques and preservation, and her

paintings reflect her interest and her talent. She currently lives in Maytown with her daughter.

The MHS Museum will be open on Sundays in May from 2 to 4 p.m. It is located at 4 W. High St. in Maytown, less than a block from the square. Notecards featuring Hackenberger’s artwork are available for purchase.
