Making space for early learning

Classrooms to move to The Factory

The Pequea Valley Early Learning Center (PVELC), currently located in the Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS), must move before that building is demolished in a few years. Currently, the PVELC includes three preschool classrooms, space for child care for infants and toddlers, and beforeand after-school care.

According to Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) assistant superintendent Rich Eby, the classrooms represent an integral piece of the goal for each PVSD student. “Our Pequea Valley vision begins and ends with getting every kid prepared for their postsecondary first (career) choice,” said Eby. “We believe strongly in preparing kids for kindergarten with home

visits, putting books in homes, and prekindergarten - where they are coming in with a strong literacy foundation.”

“We believe strongly in preparing kids for kindergarten.”

Lisa Eckert, director of early learning for the district, explained the special importance of the Headstart and Pre-K Counts preschool programs, which are federally funded and offer fulltime learning for students who take part. “There are no child care centers in the district other than this location,” said Eckert, adding that there are no other full-time preschool programs. “This is the only one with the Headstart and Pre-K Counts slots,” she noted, adding that 60 slots are offered and that more than a quarter of the next kindergarten class is currently attending preschool at PVELC. Fortunately, space for the program has been found in The

Factory Ministries building, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. “We have four rooms for sure, and we are confident

we have a solution on the fifth room,” said Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory. However, remodeling those rooms

to qualify as a state-licensed preschool and child care center is not without a price tag. “The funding reality is that the estimated cost

Building on the success of its first craft show last fall, Limeville Church, 5783 Limeville Road, Gap, will host a spring craft fair on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The spring event will feature even more crafters than the first one, as well as food items prepared by church members. “We had a lot of people filtering in and out (at the fall event) and everyone said how nice it was. We kept hearing compliments throughout the show,” said congregation member Melanie Shivery, who is organizing

Sometimes we try too hard. Sometimes we overthink things. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us.

The PA Family Travel Fair has a unique way of simplifying things. The lively event focuses on recreation, on Pennsylvania, on family.

“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair and editor of Where

& When Pennsylvania. “It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”

The sixth edition of the annual PA Family Travel Fair, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at

is $750,000 to $800,000,” said Nagle, adding that amount will cover remodeling the existing rooms and adding the fifth room, parking, a fenced playground, and more. “The biggest cost is HVAC,” noted Nagle, who added that the age of the building and the upgrade in fresh air requirements since the advent of COVID-19 have increased costs. The new center needs to be open by Thursday, July 31, 2025, to continue providing the necessary services to PVSD children.

So far, a generous donation of $200,000 from the High Foundation has helped get the drive off to a good start, but Nagle said other funding streams are being explored. “There’s a

state grant for community hubs this would work well (for),” said Nagle, who noted that The Factory is applying for the $2 million grant with plans to use part of it for PVELC. He pointed out that the project qualifies for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP), both of which offer tax advantages to businesses. Nagle added that the ministry is talking about HVAC donations with business donors in the community, as well.

Eby stated that the PVELC is essential to achieving better lives for all PVSD graduates. “We have a quality literacy program in place from kindergarten to grade five to get kids to be proficient readers by fourth

grade (because) literacy and early learning should not be a stumbling block for a kid in eighth grade when you start exposing them to every possible career they might have interest or strength in.”

Readers who are interested in donating to help move the PVELC may contact Nagle at 717-687-9594 or adam@thefactorymini stries.com.

While this is only the second year for the Keystone Steak Cook-off to be held in New Holland, organizer Bryant Glick is confident that the upcoming event will be successful. “The top 30 national teams will come to this,” said Glick. “The bigger players like to come because it’s a triple (competition).”

Glick also received glowing reviews for the Jackson Street location following last year’s initial event. “(Competitors) rave about the park because it is not a parking lot, but it’s flat,” he noted.

The Keystone Steak Cook-off will be held on Saturday, May 4, with events scheduled for competitors from 9 a.m. through 5:30 p.m. in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St. Proceeds from the event, which is sanctioned under the Steak Cook-off Association (SCA), will benefit the maintenance fund for the New Holland Community Butterfly Garden, which will adjoin New Holland Borough’s Groff Park arbo-

the event along with Danae Baldwin. “This time, we will have hot dogs and beef barbecue for anyone who would like to eat lunch.”

Takeouts will also be available.

The craft fair will be set up downstairs in the church’s fellowship hall. Crafts for sale will include leather jewelry and leather crafts, custom iced coffee cups, crocheted stuffed animals and crocheted dresses. “We also have Dresden & Company baskets, and we have someone making homemade paper crafts - cards and banners - and homemade sewing crafts and beaded items.”

The fall event featured 16 crafters, including Shivery, who sold jewelry and cups. “(This time) our cap is 24 (crafters), and we are up to

19 crafters,” she noted.

All proceeds from the craft fair will support the church’s children’s ministry and the Limeville’s Blessings store, which offers free clothing, household items, children’s toys, toiletries and more to people in need. The store, which Shivery operates, opened at the church in July of 2022. Anyone in need of assistance is welcome to visit the store, and no proof of income or residency is required. Limeville’s Blessings is currently open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Last year, we finished out the year helping 839 families,” Shivery reported. “This year, we have already helped a little over 200 families.”

People are permitted to visit the store to collect free items once per month. “We have people from all over coming. I post on Facebook when we are opening the night before or the morning before, and usually we have 15 to 20 people sitting on the door stoop when the volunteer gets there,” Shivery noted. “There are

a lot of people in need of clothes.”

Donations of gently used clothing, shoes, bedding, blankets and small kitchen appliances are also accepted during store hours. All donated fabric items must be freshly laundered and all clothing items should be separated and labeled by size and gender. Bedding and sheets must also be marked by size. “We have donation guidelines. Everything has to be presorted,” noted Shivery. “We were getting shoes mixed in with clothes and towels.”

She said that those who receive children’s clothing from the store frequently return it to keep the cycle of giving going. “We get a lot of single parents who come. When our seasons change, they swap out their kids’ outgrown stuff and get new stuff,” Shivery said. “So they are helping the community while they are helping themselves.”

Fulton Bank named SBA Export Lender of the Year

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recently recognized Fulton Bank as an Export Lender

of the Year. Fulton Bank is a community bank headquartered in Lancaster, with

operations in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Fulton’s SBA department is a central component of the bank’s commercial lending line of business, with Export Working Capital Program (EWCP) solutions delivered to small business exporters in collaboration with the bank’s international group, which provides an array of financing and payment services to their internationally focused clients. EWCP is an integral component of Fulton Bank’s comprehensive lineup of SBA offerings and typically accounts for 10% to 15% of Fulton’s annual SBA loan volume.

in the national competition. “This is three cookoffs in one event, and each cook-off awards points,” said Glick, who noted that each competitor can make up to three steaks and that they also have the option to cook ribs. “This is unique because it’s the only triple in Pennsylvania,” he added.

Cooks will first meet at 9 a.m., with the initial steaks turned in from noon to 12:30 p.m. Ribs will be turned in from

4:15 to 4:30 p.m., and awards will be given out at 5:30 p.m. Cash prizes for winners will range from $50 to $1,000. Competitors may register at www .steakcookoffs.com.

The second Kids Hot Dog Grill Master Contest will take place on May 4 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the park. Children under age 14 may enter the contest, which will feature prizes, including gift cards. First prize will

be a 30-day supply of hot dogs. “It’s a free kids’ hot dog cook-off, and it’s sponsored by John F. Martin,” said Glick. As with the Keystone Steak Cook-off, proceeds will benefit the New Holland Community Butterfly Garden. To register, contact Glick at 717-419-7184 or email keystonesteakcookoff@ gmail.com.

Travel Fair

a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.

“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”

from pg 1

More than 40 exhibitors will be represented at the PA Family Travel Fair, including visitor’s bureaus, museums, state parks, amusement parks, historical sites and Keystone State destinations. The low-pressure, laid-back atmosphere is enhanced by food trucks, live shows, giveaways, face painting and balloon artists.

In addition to substantial giveaway drawings from exhibitors, Where & When Pennsylvania will be giving away a Potter-Tioga getaway for four. The grand prize includes four nights of lodging at the Penn Wells Lodge; passes to museums, attractions, and tours; food vouchers; and more.

“We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”

According to Royal, Pennsylvania is a unique travel destination.

“You can’t really compare it to other states,” said Royal. “The country was born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was

the wild west. So much has happened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”

The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.

“Way too many of us are leaving vacation days on the table at the end of the year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”

Museum restores iron lung

The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum, 410 N. Lime St., Lancaster, has completed the restoration and preservation of its iron lung exhibit. The completion of this project marks a milestone in the museum’s dedication to preserving medical history for future generations.

Originally acquired by the museum in the 2000s, the iron lung has stood as a symbol of medical innovation and the fight against polio. Its historical significance, coupled with its intricate engineering, made it a focal point of interest for visitors and researchers alike. Over the years, however, the iron lung began to show signs of wear and deterioration, prompting the museum’s preservation team to

undertake the preservation process.

Led by Dr. Jon Schrock and executive director Kim Jovinelli, the restoration process involved meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of the iron lung’s mechanics. Every aspect of the exhibit, from its exterior casing to its internal components, was carefully assessed and preserved. Specialized techniques were employed to address corrosion, mechanical issues, and aesthetic concerns, ensuring that the iron lung retained its historical integrity while also complying with modern preservation standards.
