“This is open to everyone,” said Linda Saad, representative of the ELANCO Source Water Collaborative. Saad is seeking volunteers to collect and test water samples from streams throughout northeastern Lancaster County, where she noted no creeks are currently being monitored. “We have no volunteers,” explained Saad. “We may have some recommendations for streams we’d like to have monitored. We’d like to get some data on the upper Conestoga, but (volunteers) can pick a stream in this area.”

Saad pointed out that the purpose of the Water Quality Volunteer Coalition (WQVC) will be to obtain information. “More than 50% of the 140 miles of streams in this county are compromised,” said Saad, who noted that watching for evidence of the effectiveness of restoration projects, such as

planting trees around streams, is a goal. “We will see changes in temperature and water quality … (and) changes in sedimentation and runoff,” she noted.

The long-term water testing project is a partnership between the Lancaster County Conservation District, an organization working to enhance awareness of the relationship between human activities and the environment, and ELANCO Source Water Collaborative. “The WQVC is a group of local volunteers who care about their local streams and want to see how they’re doing,” said Amanda Goldsmith, watershed specialist with the Conservation District, who added that a number of county partners, volunteers, government agencies, and citizens are all working together to clean up local streams. “Through water quality monitoring, volunteers are able to help tell the story of local stream improvement,” Goldsmith explained.

Still barkin’ for life

In 2023, Sharon Groff, a member of the Misfits on a Mission Relay For Life team, coordinated a Bark For Life event in Ephrata.

The fundraiser was so successful that Groff and her helpers are working to hold the second Ephrata-area Bark For Life, at New Life Fellowship, 420 E. Fulton St., Ephrata, on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free, dogfriendly event will be presented by Blue Ridge Communications and WIOV-FM.

Attending dogs will take center stage if they participate in the

17th annual EPC Golf Outing to drive out homelessness

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians are known to be homeless on any given day. Housing instability and crises can stem from a multitude of factors, affecting men, women and children across the state. In Lancaster and Chester counties, nonprofit organization

Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is working hard to combat homelessness by offering a variety of resources to individuals who are experiencing a housing crisis.

One of GSS’ largest fundraisers is an annual golf outing that is made possible by a partnership with Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). The 17th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 7, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville.

The concept of patriotism can be defined by words like pride, honor, responsibility and appreciation. But actions speak louder than words.

The Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans choose to live their freedoms every day. They exhibit their gratitude by knitting and crocheting blankets and quilts for veterans who are confined to hospice care.

“Our men and women fought for us and the United States, and they’re patriotic,” said Jean Summers, president of the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans. “I think (knitting quilts) is a great way to recognize patriotism. They’re dedicated to the country. The pledge they took when they went into the service was for life. I’m very grateful.”

The Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans

is conducting an inaugural live basket auction on Saturday, April 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at American Legion Post 429, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata. The purpose of the event is to raise funds for materials and patterns needed for the stitchers to perform their appreciative services for veterans.

“It’s a fundraiser, but it’s also designed to raise awareness of our veterans and what we do for them,” said Summers. “We want veterans to know that they’re not forgotten. The women do this on their own time. Some do it on their own. Some meet in area parks or local churches or community centers and do it together. We give them everything they need to make the quilts, but they pick their own styles when they crochet or knit.”

The live auction will include more than 50 baskets filled with goodies, gift certificates and coupons for services donated by local businesses. The themed baskets will feature articles related to jewelry, various foodstuffs, artwork, baby items, gardening, wine and pets.

The baskets can be previewed beginning at 4 p.m., and the live auction will start at 6 p.m. Snacks and refreshments will be served.

“I will talk about what the auction is all about and why we are having it,” said Summers, a resident of Leola. “It can be an evening of recognizing the needs of local veterans. We reach out to veterans and their families if they’re vulnerable. The blankets make them recognize that they’re not forgotten.”

The Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans works with seven hospice providers, two Veterans Affairs hospitals and nearly 50 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion posts to connect with veterans.

“On the back of each blanket there’s a patch that says, ‘Thank you for your service to our country,’ and the knitter’s initials,” said Summers. “Many times, our blankets are there during the passing of the veterans. Some are buried with them, but that’s up to the family.”

Originally established in 2016 as Stitchers for Vets, the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans only recently became incorporated as a recognized nonprofit. Over the last eight years, the group of 50 mostly local women has knitted over 2,000 blankets for vets.

“I believe strongly that this is God’s work,” said Summers. “These women do this out of love. We’re recognizing what our country means to us and how men and

“We will pair up with the Conservation District to train volunteers to begin monitoring various sites,” explained Saad, who added that water testing began about 20 years ago with the Senior Environment Corps working with the Office of Aging, but later, it became a more generalized program where any citizen could volunteer. “People need not be seniors. This is open to everyone,” said Saad.

Monthly requirements for volunteers will include chemical, biological, and physical testing. Volunteers will check water temperature and look for nitrates and oxygen. Regular biological testing will include searching for macroinvertebrates, insect larvae, and small aquatic life in the stream. “(Finding life) is an exceptional indicator of water quality,” noted Saad. Other volunteer work will include assessing whether the stream bank is stable and whether there are vegetation issues, such as the presence of invasive plants.

“Once the training is complete, experienced mentors will accompany (volunteers) until they feel

comfortable doing it themselves,” noted Saad, who pointed out that the Conservation District has a satellite site at Garden Spot Village (GSV), where volunteers will be able to pick up supplies for testing the water. Samples may be brought to GSV for testing and to enter results into a computer database. “The database is maintained by the county, and it’s available to any citizen group that wants to take a look at water quality in various areas of the county,” said Saad. “The program isn’t meant to create any kind of a regulatory atmosphere, (rather) it is done for awareness and so that professionals can keep an eye on the level of water quality issues in the county.”

According to Goldsmith, the WQVC sampling will provide volunteers with an opportunity to become an integral part of data collection. “Monitoring also identifies areas that aren’t improving and where restoration efforts are needed most,” she said.

Readers who are interested in volunteering in the program may email llsreply2@gmail.com or call the Terre Hill Borough at 717-445-4581.

Lancaster Mennonite golf benefit will defray costs of education

Golf is a fun game on a few different levels. But it takes on more meaning, more significance when it’s played with a purpose.

Lancaster Mennonite School’s upcoming golf event is filled with meaning. Its purpose is to help provide affordable education options to local families.

“Believe it or not, the cost of tuition is not the true cost of education,” said Aubrey Kreider, Lancaster Mennonite’s director of marketing. “We rely on support to meet the gap. We want the school to be accessible and allow families an opportunity to get a great, faith-based education. We want to prepare students to be world-changers. Some families are able to pay the full amount, but many can’t. We also want to be able to pay our teachers competitively and support extracurricular activities.”

A golfer rolls in a putt during last year’s Lancaster Mennonite benefit golf outing.

Lancaster Mennonite School, and about 32% receive tuition assistance. This year’s cost of tuition for Lancaster Mennonite High School students was $11,870.

Couple marks 60th anniversary

Melvin and Linda McGinnis of Ocean City, Md., celebrated their 60th anniversary on April 13 at a private dinner with family at the Ocean City Marlin Club. They were married on April 11, 1964, at Ranck’s United Methodist Church by pastor Eugene Patrick and the bride’s grandfather, the Rev. Paul O. Shettle.

They are the parents of Mel McGinnis II of Ocean City, Shane McGinnis of New Holland, Jebb McGinnis of New Holland, and Justin McGinnis of Ocean City. There are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The couple attends Ranck’s

United Methodist Church.

Melvin is retired from Salty Sons Marine, and Linda is retired from Casual Designs Furniture.

50plus Expo set in Lancaster

The benefit golf outing is one of four fundraising events that Lancaster Mennonite conducts each year.

Lancaster Mennonite’s 28th annual benefit golf outing will be conducted on Tuesday, May 14, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. The event will feature a morning round that begins at 7:30 a.m. and an afternoon round that starts at 1:30 p.m., and it will include refreshments, breakfast, lunch, dinner, gifts and prizes.

“It’s an important event, but it’s really fun,” said Kreider. “It’s an opportunity for participants to be outside and do a sport they enjoy. It’s beautiful. The sun’s out. There’s lots of food involved. It’s less about being competitive and more about fun. It’s just a fun atmosphere of fellowship and being together.”

Up to 200 community members, company representatives and Lancaster Mennonite supporters are expected to participate. Last year, the Lancaster Mennonite benefit golf outing raised $35,500 to support the school, some of which went toward providing tuition support for designated families.

“There are a lot of businesses that sponsor the event,” said Kreider. “For them, it’s a great way to get out of the office, team build and support a great cause. We have alumni who will come back, and they get to meet their former teachers. It’s a great opportunity for different age groups to come together.”

There are currently 560 students from prekindergarten through grade 12 enrolled at

“They’re all really important,” said Kreider. “With the golf tournament, there are more businesses involved. It’s one of our best opportunities to partner with sponsors. It’s a great opportunity for mentoring, building community and building connections.”

Located at 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, Lancaster Mennonite is a Christian-based, private school that emphasizes faith, education and community. In 1996, supporters saw golf as a good vehicle to raise funds and raise awareness for the school.

“At the beginning, they would golf and come back to the school and have a picnic,” said Kreider. “It was probably a little more grassroots then. It was volunteers who were running the event, and now our team is doing it. If people want to make a positive impact in the lives of kids, our future generations and leaders, this is a tangible way to do it.”

For additional information about the Lancaster Mennonite benefit golf outing or to register, go to www.lancastermennonite .org/events/golf-2024. The deadline for entries is Monday, April 29.

Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to expand

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Indiantown Gap National Cemetery announced it is developing additional acres to meet the growing needs of veterans and their families in southcentral Pennsylvania. Upon completion of the construction project, it is projected that the veteran community will be provided additional burial space lasting into the year 2038.

Groundbreaking for the phase five expansion of the cemetery was scheduled to take place in March. The three-year-long project will consist of the development of 27 acres for approximately 15,700 gravesites for casketed and cremated remains. With a throw of 101-8, Spot’s Maggie Martin easily secured first place in Section Two action at Lampeter-Strasburg Monday, April 15. The Spartans went on to win 78-72. EPC Golf Outing from pg 1

Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Golfers may also purchase tickets for prize drawings that will feature items donated by businesses in the local community. Food will be included in the cost of admission; breakfast for the morning group will be provided by Joe on the Go Coffee Co., and the afternoon golfers will receive a boxed lunch from Trio Bar and Grill. Morning and afternoon golfers will be able to enjoy a meal from Peters’ BBQ when they finish their respective rounds.

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. “On the same day someone becomes a sponsor, a real person on the other end has a place to call home and has security for tomorrow because of them,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of GSS. “We’re so grateful for the support from EPC and its efforts to support organizations like us. It’s impressive how much dedication and time they put into this event.” “EPC’s longstanding partnership

with GSS, alongside with members from our community, has demonstrated that individuals in need can rely on their communities for support, enabling them and their families to rebuild and thrive,” noted Jocelyn Engle, EPC publisher.

On average, GSS has served 300 people per day and 72,000 meals every year since its founding in 1999. The organization, which began with a single location in Phoenixville, has since expanded to include additional facilities in Lancaster city, Coatesville and Kennett Square, along with a new office Ephrata, which was built last year.

The continued expansions have allowed GSS to greatly increase the size of its staff, in addition to the number of people it is able to serve through its programs - and it couldn’t come at a better time.

“We really are serving record levels of people; we’re on pace to serve 800 women and children this year, which is a 25% increase from 2023,” Hoffer said. “Our focus

is on continuing to respond to the needs of our communities across Lancaster and Chester counties.”

The many programs offered by GSS include seasonal shelter during the cold months, emergency housing to address clients’ basic needs and transitional housing as individuals receive assistance to meet their goals. According to Hoffer, these programs are primarily sustained by funding that comes from individuals and businesses in the community. “What we do provides

such a critical, basic need, but the reality is that 98% of our budget comes from the good will of the people in our communities,” said Hoffer. “It keeps our doors open and our programs running.”

Registration for the EPC Golf Outing may be completed online before Wednesday, May 29. For more information or to register online, visit https://epcgolfouting .com/register. To learn more about GSS and its programs, visit https:// goodsamservices.org.

Ephrata Cloister museum store to celebrate Ephrata Days

The Ephrata Cloister museum store, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will celebrate Ephrata Days on the weekend of Friday to Sunday, April 26 to 28. All shoppers will receive a discount on store purchases, along with free refreshments. A sidewalk sale will feature select items.

The museum store at Ephrata Cloister is filled with a wide variety of locally handcrafted items inspired by the craftsmanship of the historic site. The store is located inside a mid-1800s barn.

Items found in the store include hand-turned wooden bowls, ironware, traditional Pennsylvania German rolling pins, redware pottery by Ned Foltz, items from River Rat Pottery and Mayre Landis, embroidered and quilted notecards by Paper Lane and Dawn Musser, natural soaps, hand cream and lotions, fraktur cards, large letters, alphabet posters and fraktur-inspired illuminations by Emily Smucker Beidler, paintings, prints, real bayberry candles, Christmas ornaments, Moravian stars and paper star kits, and handmade chocolates.

There is a book room with more than 200 titles covering local, Colonial, and Pennsylvania history; folk art; cookbooks; tour guides for Lancaster County barns, mills, and

homes that originally belonged to Cloister members in the 1700s; and several selections on the history of Ephrata and Lancaster County.

Douglas Gehr will sign copies of his books on April 26 from noon to 3 p.m. A native of Ephrata and a retired pastor, Gehr has written several books on local history, including “The Clocks of the Cloister,” “Clockmakers in the Cocalico Valley,” “Sacred Simplicity: Worship Spaces Among the Brethren in the Atlantic Northeast,” “The Peter Gehr Story,” “The Gehr Family of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania,” “The Ephrata Effect,” and “The Vehicle for Growth: The Influence of the Reading and Columbia Railroad in Lancaster County.” Gehr serves on the board of directors for the Ephrata Cloister Associates and for the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley. He also volunteers at the Ephrata Cloister as a tour guide.

During Ephrata Days, attendees may also meet radio personality Casey Allyn, co-host of “The Rich and Casey Show” aired in the mornings on WIOV. Allyn will be at the Ephrata Cloister Museum Store on Saturday, April 27, starting at noon. Allyn is an actress and a cookbook author. She is also passionate about animal welfare and will have adoptable dogs with her

at the event.

On April 28 from noon to 3 p.m., author and lifelong Ephrata resident Larry Alexander will be at the museum store signing copies of his latest book, “Shattered Jade: A Novel of Saipan.” The book is a historical novel set in World War II and told through the eyes of soldiers on both sides of the firing line. Alexander’s first book, “Biggest Brother: The Life of Major Dick Winters, the Man Who Led the Band of Brothers,” earned him a place on the New York Times bestseller list. Alexander retired as a newspaper columnist in 2015, but he continues to be a regular contributor and freelance reporter. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Ephrata Cloister Associates.

The Ephrata Cloister museum store will have extended hours during Ephrata Days. It will be open on April 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and April 28 from noon to 4:30 p.m.

For more information, call the museum store at 717-733-2592.

The store is operated by the Ephrata Cloister Associates, a nonprofit organization that works in partnership with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, supporting the mission of

preservation and education at this National Historic Landmark.

The Ephrata Cloister historic site will be open on April 26 and 27

6,000-niche columbarium. The $38.6 million expansion will also include construction of a new honor guard building.

The 677-acre Indiantown Gap National Cemetery was established as a national cemetery in 1976 with the first burial taking place in 1982. Currently, the cemetery has 221 developed acres and is the final resting place of more than 65,000 veterans and family members.

Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration (NCA) - which provides veterans and their families with burial benefits and memorial services - led all organizations, public or private, in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for 2022. NCA received a score of 97, the highest score ever achieved by any organization rated by the ACSI. This was the seventh consecutive time NCA has ranked first overall in customer satisfaction.
