Pop-Up Shop will benefit Hope Within Ministries

For several years, Hope Within Ministries Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center has held a fundraising holiday shop during the Christmas season.

“While we rely on our 40-plus volunteer licensed medical and dental professionals to provide care to our patients, we needed to look at additional ways to provide financial support for our operations throughout the year,” said Anne Marie McAlester, executive director. “Our holiday shop is always well-received, so we looked at having events throughout the year - spring, summer, fall and Christmas.”

The organization’s Spring Pop-Up Shop will be held on Friday, May 3, from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the

annex on the clinic’s property, 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown.

The shop will include collectibles and antiques, upcycled furniture, home entertaining items, original photography and

artwork, glassware, Americana, vintage jewelry, specially made painted terra-cotta pots with inspirational sayings and more. Sub sandwiches will also be available for purchase.

“Our items come from a variety of sources,” McAlester shared. “We have been blessed by several supporters who have donated quality furniture, including some antiques, as well as sports

memorabilia. Local businesses have generously donated items such as honey and home decor. We also have volunteers who delight in thrift shopping collectibles and upcycling furniture. In addition, we have a very dedicated friend of the ministry, nurse Robin Bush, who procures, at her own expense, items constantly throughout the year.”

Hope Within serves residents of Dauphin, Lancaster and Lebanon counties who are medically uninsured and financially eligible. Services include free common prescription medications; donation-based oral health screenings, education, cleanings and other dental care; and counseling on a selfpay income-based negotiated fee, with no eligibility requirements. Hope Within’s typical patients are people who make too much money to qualify for

Earlier this month, Miss Pennsylvania, Miranda Moore, visited with and spoke to residents at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. In her presentation, she highlighted her background and passion for promoting STEM careers for women, as well as her community service initiative, Take Action in Fashion.

Moore’s visit was part of a meeting of the Penn State Grey Lions, an alumni interest group made up of Masonic Village residents, staff members and community members. In her talk, she discussed her path to the crown.

Two years ago, Moore was named Miss Lancaster County before becoming Miss Central PA. She’s currently in the final months of her term as Miss Pennsylvania, and she competed

for a national title at the Miss America event in January. Her term as Miss Pennsylvania will end on Saturday, June 15.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians are known to be homeless on any given day. Housing instability and crises can stem from a multitude of factors, affecting men, women and children across the state. In Lancaster and Chester counties, nonprofit organization Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is working hard to combat homelessness by offering a

variety of resources to individuals who are experiencing a housing crisis.

One of GSS’ largest fundraisers is an annual golf outing that is made possible by a partnership with Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). The 17th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 7, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Golfers may also purchase tickets for prize drawings that will feature items donated by businesses in

the local community. Food will be included in the cost of admission; breakfast for the morning group will be provided by Joe on the Go Coffee Co., and the afternoon golfers will receive a boxed lunch from Trio Bar and Grill. Morning and afternoon golfers will be able to enjoy a meal from Peters’ BBQ when they finish their respective rounds.

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. “On the same day someone becomes a sponsor, a real person on the other end has a place to call home and has security for tomorrow because of them,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of GSS. “We’re so grateful for the support from EPC and its efforts to support organizations like us. It’s impressive how much dedication and time they put into this event.”

“EPC’s longstanding partnership with GSS, alongside with members from our community, has demonstrated that indi viduals in need can rely on their communities for support, enabling them and their families to rebuild and thrive,” noted Jocelyn Engle, EPC publisher.

record levels of people; we’re on pace to serve 800 women and children this year, which is a 25% increase from 2023,” Hoffer said. “Our focus is on continuing to respond to the needs of our communities across Lancaster and Chester counties.”

The many programs offered by GSS include seasonal shelter during the cold months, emergency housing to address clients’

meet their goals. According to Hoffer, these programs are primarily sustained by funding that comes from individuals and businesses in the community. “What we do provides such a critical, basic need, but the reality is that 98% of our budget comes from the good will of the people in our communities,” said Hoffer. “It keeps our doors open and our programs running.”

On average, GSS has served 300 people per day and 72,000 meals every year since its founding in 1999. The organization, which began with a single location in Phoenixville, has since expanded to include additional facilities in Lancaster city, Coatesville and Kennett Square, along with a new office Ephrata, which was built last year. The continued expansions have allowed GSS to greatly increase the size of its staff, in addition to the number of people it is able to serve through its programs - and it couldn’t come at a better time. “We really are serving

A Harrisburg native, Moore is an environmental engineer and graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, with plans to earn a master’s degree in nonprofit leadership. She is the first engineer and sustainability professional to be named Miss Pennsylvania.

In her talk at Masonic Village, Moore shared her passion for promoting STEM for women. She noted that only 11% of certified engineers are women, and she said she’s working to empower kids, especially girls, to pursue engineering as a career. She shared with the audience that she’s been known to wear a pink hard hat and high heels on sites, although she will wear steel-toed boots when necessary.

Through her community service initiative, Take Action in Fashion, Moore focuses on raising awareness of the negative impact the fashion industry has on people and the planet. She emphasized that the fashion industry is the highest producer of pollution, higher than both construction and vehicle

pollution, noting that there are 92 million tons of textile waste produced each year. Additionally, she said, the industry promotes unfair working conditions and has a harmful social impact. Through her initiative, Moore has created a website and educational toolkit to raise awareness and increase knowledge of poor practices in the fashion industry.

At her Elizabethtown visit, Moore also entertained the crowd with a performance on the clarinet, and she posed for photos with residents.

Since earning the title of Miss Pennsylvania last year, Moore has traveled more than 30,000 miles across the state and has attended more than 200 events and appearances.

“I meet lots of people and attend lots of events,” she said. “It requires lots of hours, but it’s rewarding to bring communities together and inspire advocacy. It’s a unique experience.”

CASA seeks volunteers

April marks National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time for community members to celebrate the small actions individuals can take that make a big impact on the well-being of children.

CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties is seeking volunteers to serve as court-appointed special advocates. The local CASA program belongs to a network of nearly 750 community-based programs that recruit, train, and support citizen volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children in the foster care system.

CASA’s mission is to provide a qualified and

compassionate court-appointed volunteer advocate to every child who is abused and neglected and thereby ensure children have a safe, nurturing, and permanent home. The program staff members, led by the program director, supervise and support the CASA volunteers.

Volunteer managers work with volunteer advocates to provide oversight and guidance as they navigate the child welfare system and the court system. The managers assist with reviewing court reports, accompany advocates to court, and help advocates with case planning.

The Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) Science Olympiad team participated at the regional Science Olympiad tournament hosted at Millersville University. The 15-member team demonstrated its knowledge across 23 events spanning various STEM disciplines, including biology, chemistry, earth science, computer programming, engineering, environmental science, physics and the nature of science.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer advocate is invited to attend an information session on Friday, April 26, at noon at the CASA office at 120 N. Shippen St., Lancaster, or a virtual information session on Wednesday, May 22, at 5:30 p.m. To learn more about CASA, visit www.casalancleb.org or call the CASA office at 717-208-3280.

In the team competition, the Bears placed fourth out of 26 competing teams, earning them a spot in the state tournament to be held at Penn State Altoona at the end of April. Breakfast will support mission trip

Fill up on food and fellowship while supporting a mission trip at the annual all-you-can-eat strawberry and waffle breakfast at Ruhl’s Church. The meal will be served on Saturday, May 4, from 6 to 10 a.m., or until sold out, at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

Along with strawberries and waffles, the breakfast will feature pancakes, eggs, breakfast casseroles, bacon, sausage, home-fried potatoes and assorted beverages.

“This breakfast buffet will have a wide variety of delicious food prepared by the Mission Outreach Team,” said Gail Ruhl, who is a Mission Outreach Team coordinator with her husband, Chuck. “No one should go home hungry. There will be opportunity for everyone to sit down and relax while they enjoy each other’s company. At past breakfast fundraisers, many people came together with friends or family to appreciate the food and atmosphere.”

Proceeds from the breakfast will help church members serve with the Central Vermont Mission and Hope Coalition. A team from the church will travel to Montpelier and the surrounding areas in June, the same area the group served last year.

“Our decision to return to the same area was made because of the catastrophic flooding and mudslides that resulted in significant property, road and bridge losses that happened sev -

eral weeks after we helped this community through home repairs,” Gail said. “Several of the residents we helped, along with the church who hosted us, were personally affected by this weather event.” Again this year, the team will help with home repairs, such as installing drywall and flooring, fixing or building decks and handicap ramps and painting.

Gail encourages everyone to come out for the breakfast. “Attending this breakfast fundraiser is a great way to not only support our Mission Outreach Team financially, but it also gives people the chance to ask us questions about our ministry and learn more

5K will support African camp for children

Go for a walk or a run on Saturday, May 4, and you can help children experience a week of fun, fellowship and faith halfway across the globe.

The 11th annual Arm of Hope 5K will begin at 9 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy.

The event is a fundraiser for the Arm of Hope camp in Ghana, Africa, which provides weeklong camps for students of elementary and high school age. Camp provides an opportunity for children to get out of the slums of Ghana and experience things many kids take for granted - three meals a day, a mattress to sleep on and opportunities to play games - all while learning about the love of Jesus.

“When we held the first camp in 2014, we had 190 kids attend,” recalled Greg Grove, who volunteers with the camp and is organizing the 5K. “This year, we were expecting 300 to show up the first week, and 450 showed up. Over the two weeks, we had 785 kids.”

One of the neatest things about the Arm of Hope camp, he said, is that campers who attended in the early years are now old enough to return to serve as leaders. “It’s really become the kids from Ghana leading the camp while we are there to help them,” Grove shared.

Along with the camp, Arm of Hope provides information on Christian faith, access to health care, a Christmas party and more. “In the process, these kids are growing up and becoming the leaders

in their community,” he said. “It’s really about them becoming disciples.”

At the 5K, a variety of door prizes will be offered, along with baked goods for the top finishers in each age bracket. The top male and top female overall finishers of the race, along with winners in the master’s brackets - for those over age 40 - will receive a handcrafted wooden trophy from Ghana, Grove said.

A chicken barbecue will be available to purchase by donation so participants can take lunch home with them. The meal will include a chicken leg and thigh, a baked potato, a homemade roll and a whoopie pie. Pickup for the chicken barbecue will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the barbecue is open to members of the public even if they are not participating in the 5K. The chicken barbecue is available for preorder only by Saturday, April 27. To order, visit www.armof hopeinghana.org/bbq.

Grove, who is organizing the race with Keith Franz, encourages people of all ages to participate in the 5K.

“It’s a great family-friendly event,” he said. “We have people who come with kids in strollers, people who bring their pets.”

He noted that walk-ins are welcome to register for the 5K, but early registration is encouraged. Online registration will close the day before the event. To register, visit www.armofhopeinghana .org/5k. Grove also encouraged people to sponsor a participant at the same website.
