SEEDS seeks community sowing support

Michelle Kime and Kristen Hershey are the directors of SEEDS, a nonprofit that addresses housing, education and health needs in the Conestoga Valley area. While their work is supported by volunteers, they are SEEDS’ only paid employees.

Kime and Hershey wear many hats and serve various roles, not the least of which are their duties as fundraisers. It’s a role that requires persistence, energy and ingenuity.

barriers happen?’”

“SEEDS is all about partnerships,” said Hershey. “All of our partner businesses have Conestoga Valley connections. We’re coexisting together. We’re strategic about the businesses we’re asking for support.”

“SEEDS exists to create a healthy, thriving Conestoga Valley community.”

“It’s kind of a balancing act,” said Kime. “Our clients are our top priority. That’s where we learn about their needs. Out of that comes the fundraising. We’re constantly asking ourselves, ‘What funding do we need to make breaking down

Growing Seeds and the Community Care Fund is currently SEEDS’ only fundraising effort. The goals are to secure 20 new monthly donors and to raise $25,000 through one-time donations.

The campaign will kick off Wednesday, May 1, and run through the entire month.

“Conestoga Valley is a wonderful place to live, a wonderful place to work, a wonderful place to raise a family,” said Hershey.

“We want to meet the needs of all people and learn and grow from each other. As we establish

EPC Golf Outing

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians are known to be homeless on any given day. Housing instability and crises can stem from a multitude of factors, affecting men, women and children across the state. In Lancaster and Chester counties, nonprofit organization Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is working hard to combat homelessness by offering a variety

of resources to individuals who are experiencing a housing crisis. One of GSS’ largest fundraisers is an annual golf outing that is made possible by a partnership with Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). The 17th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 7, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Golfers may also purchase tickets for prize drawings that will feature items donated by businesses in the local community. Food will

You’ve undoubtedly heard of fishing for trout, fishing for compliments, even fishing for men. Well, this is a kind of fishing with a different result.

The Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament is all about helping and supporting veterans. Local teenager Case Baccio is the fundraising event’s founder, organizer and promoter.

“The mission is to support veterans and their families and recognize the sacrifices they made for us,” said Case, an enterprising seventh-grader who attends

Manheim Township Middle School (MTMS). “They protect our country and keep us safe. It’s a show of gratitude to our nation’s

heroes. A little bit can go a long way. You don’t have to do something big. It’s just a way of saying, ‘Thank you for your service.’”

that stronger, healthier community, it keeps people here and builds stronger connections.”

The money raised will be applied to specific things like housing needs, utility aid, transportation to and from jobs, the development of an English as a Second Language program and rental assistance. Last year’s Growing Seeds and the Community Care Fund raised nearly $48,000.

“We have seen a large amount of support from the Conestoga Valley community,” said Hershey. “This will allow us to launch new programs and help more people. It will allow us to expand and help the community further.”

This year, Hershey and Kime have already secured SEEDS support from five local businesses: all five locations of Coffee Co., including 2350 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster; Gracie’s on Main, 264 W. Main St., Leola; Rachel’s Café & Creperie, 201 W. Walnut, St., Lancaster; Funck’s, 365 W. Main St., Leola; and Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard, 1951 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster.

“It’s anyone who cares about the Conestoga Valley community looking around and seeing the different needs,” said Kime. “That’s who we’re reaching out to, seeing if they’re interested in giving. I love Conestoga Valley. We love our community. We love our neighbors.”

SEEDS was already five years in the making when it was formally established as a nonprofit in October of 2022. While the organization is still in its infancy, the impact made on the Conestoga Valley community is already being felt.

“At the heart of it, SEEDS exists to create a healthy, thriving Conestoga Valley community,” said Hershey.

“We’re looking to enrich people’s lives by connecting them with services. We are still young, but we have been so well received in the Conestoga Valley community. We’re still trying to get the word out about what we do. We see ourselves existing for many years to come by growing step by step.”

Fishing tournament

This year’s edition of the Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament, the fifth, will be staged at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to noon. Registration will open at 7 a.m., and lunch will be served after the competition.

“We just want to give back in some small way,” said Ali Bucher, Case’s mom. “This is our way of doing it. There are so many veterans’ organizations out there. We want to reach as many individuals as we can.”

The fishing competition will award prizes to the top three adult finishers (16 and older) and the top three youth finishers (15 and younger) according to the aggregate weight of their catches. About 50 total anglers are expected to participate.

“I’ve always been really interested in outdoor stuff,” said Case. “I love to fish, and most people I hang around with love to fish. So I figured I’d start a fishing tournament.”

All proceeds from the Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament will go to Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals, as well as other local veterans’ organizations. If the event raises as much money as Case hopes - $10,000 - it would push the total amount raised by Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament over the years to nearly $50,000.

“The more participants we have, the more fun the event is,” said Case. “Some of the fishermen have heard of our organization and want to support the mission. Some

people we know and some people we don’t know.”

“He does everything,” said Ali of her son. “He’s the face of the organization. It’s his thing. He goes to all the businesses asking for money.”

Case established the event in 2020, when he was in elementary school, after attending a Warrior Weekend, an event designed to provide support for veterans.

“I do it because when I went to Warrior Weekend it made me realize how many people need assistance,” said Case, who’s a Boy Scout and also a member of MTMS’ football, wrestling and track and field squads. “When I got back, I knew I had to do something to help veterans. That’s how we came up with the event.”

“He’s just a really caring person,” said Ali. “He’s an incredible kid. He’s compassionate. He’s driven. He’s an excellent student. He’s an excellent classmate. He just wants to give back and help.”

be included in the cost of admission; breakfast for the morning group will be provided by Joe on the Go Coffee Co., and the afternoon golfers will receive a boxed lunch from Trio Bar and Grill. Morning and afternoon golfers will be able to enjoy a meal from Peters’ BBQ when they finish their respective rounds.

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. “On the same day someone becomes a sponsor, a real person on the other end has a place to call home and has security for tomorrow because of them,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of GSS. “We’re so grateful for the support from EPC and its efforts to support organizations like us. It’s impressive how much dedication and time they put into this event.”

“EPC’s longstanding partnership with GSS, alongside with members from our community, has demonstrated that individuals in need can rely on their communities for support, enabling them and their families to rebuild and thrive,” noted Jocelyn Engle, EPC publisher.

On average, GSS has served 300 people per day and 72,000 meals every year since its founding in 1999. The organization, which began with a single location in Phoenixville, has since expanded to include additional facilities in Lancaster city, Coatesville and Kennett Square, along with a new office Ephrata, which was built last year. The continued expansions have allowed GSS to greatly increase the size of its staff, in addition to the number of people it is able to serve through its programs - and it couldn’t come at a better time. “We really are serving record levels of people; we’re on pace to serve 800

women and children this year, which is a 25% increase from 2023,” Hoffer said. “Our focus is on continuing to respond to the needs of our communities across Lancaster and Chester counties.”

Golfers support Good Samaritan Services by taking part in the annual EPC Golf Outing.

The many programs offered by GSS include seasonal shelter during the cold months, emergency housing to address clients’ basic needs and transitional housing as individuals receive assistance to meet their goals. According to Hoffer, these programs are primarily sustained by funding that comes from individuals and businesses in the community.

“What we do provides such a critical, basic need, but the reality is that 98% of our budget comes from the good will of the people in our communities,” said Hoffer. “It keeps our doors open and our programs running.”

Registration for the EPC Golf Outing may be completed online before Wednesday, May 29. For more information or to register online, visit https://epcgolfouting .com/register. To learn more about GSS and its programs, visit https:// goodsamservices.org.

Promise Players post fundraiser dinner theater

The Promise Players will present a dinner theater production, “The Case of the Duplicate Date Nut Loaf,” on Friday, May 17, at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, May 18, at noon and 6 p.m. All performances will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster.

In the show, Inspector Casey Solved is called to a local church’s

bake sale and bazaar. As usual, Lillian “Lil” O’Laydee has baked her famous date nut loaf using her family’s secret recipe. However, someone else has also baked a date nut loaf and put it on the bake sale table beside Lil’s. The inspector will investigate whether Lil’s recipe was stolen, and the audience will vote on which character they believe is

the culprit.

The event is a fundraiser for

The Promise Players’ tech fund, and tickets must be reserved at http://promiseplayers.org.

The Promise Players has raised more than $275,000 for local charities over the past 28 years. Now some of the organization’s sound and tech equipment must be replaced. The Promise Players

prefers to send all money raised from its shows to the named beneficiary, so it hopes that the dinner theater will raise $30,000 for the new equipment.

The Promise Players’ mission is to provide Christ-centered entertainment for the public and financial gifts to nonprofit organizations in the community.

Rolling along to grant wishes

When the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy rolls through town on Sunday, May 12, it will honor a tradition that began 35 years ago with the wish of one child.

“It all began with Wish Kid Matt Strawser,” said Michelle Ruel, director of marketing and communications for Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley. “Matt was fascinated with big rig trucks, so it was no surprise he wished to ride in a big rig and talk to his sister, Heather, on the CB radio.”

Since 1990, almost 12,000 trucks have driven in the Convoy, and the event has raised more than $9.2 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.

This year’s Convoy will kick off with a carnival beginning at 9 a.m. at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. The Convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m.

“For first-time attendees, the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy is an absolute must-visit,” Ruel said. “From the moment you step inside, you’ll be immersed in a world of excitement and entertainment perfect for the entire family. … Treat yourself to delicious food, test your skills at carnival games and explore the array of merchandise available.” Wish Kid Troy will share his inspiring story and sign copies of his book, “Chemo Dog.”

“But the real magic awaits you outdoors,” Ruel shared. “Witness the grand entrance of hundreds of trucks, each a sight to behold, as they roll into the venue. As you marvel at the impressive display, indulge in

the diverse food truck offerings. And amidst the bustling atmosphere, take the opportunity to connect with the many Wish Kids and their families, whose stories are sure to touch your heart.”

Those who attend the event will have the opportunity to win gift baskets, and an online auction will run through noon on May 12. A drivethrough chicken barbecue organized by SEI Catering will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring barbecue chicken thighs, cheesy potatoes, green beans, a dinner roll, a cookie and a drink. No advance purchase is necessary, and dinners will be available until sold out.

At noon, a program will honor the 35th anniversary of the Convoy before the trucks leave the lot, accompanied by more than 50 Wish Kids. Ruel

anticipates more than 400 trucks participating in the Convoy this year.

“It’s a breathtaking sight that encapsulates the spirit of this remarkable event,” she commented.

Last year’s event raised $553,838, the second-highest total in the event’s history. Organizers have set a goal of $595,000 for this year. “Every dollar raised at this event goes toward granting the wishes of children in the Susquehanna Valley,” Ruel said. “With nearly 75% of wishes funded through this event, your participation directly impacts the lives of deserving children and families.”

40 years of Christ and community at WJTL 40 Fest

For four decades, WJTL has been a home for Christian programming, and the radio station wants to honor its legacy and longevity by giving back to the community. WJTL 40 Fest will be held on Saturday, May 18, at Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, 150 Cherry Hill Road, Ronks. The event will begin at noon and will wrap up with a headlining performance by Crowder, beginning at 8:15 p.m.

“We wanted a day to celebrate our 40th anniversary and decided a festival lineup at an outside venue would create the type of event perfect for a celebration,” said Phillip Miller, event and facilities director. “I had been talking with Cherry Crest Adventure Farm since 2022 about using their facility for an outside concert, and we thought our 40th anniversary would be the perfect time to bring a great lineup of music to the property.”

The lineup for the festival includes Behold the Beloved, which will perform at 3 p.m.; Leanna Crawford, who will entertain at 4 p.m.; Rhett Walker, who will hit the stage at 5 p.m.; Cochren & Co, which will perform at 6 p.m.; Danny Gokey, who will play at 7 p.m.; and Crowder, who will close out the evening.

“40 Fest will be a day of family fun and great music focused on celebrating 40 years of living out our slogan, “Christ. Community. Music.’ Cherry Crest Adventure Farm will have their spring attractions open,” Miller shared. “We’re planning an event that everyone can enjoy, whether you’ve listened to WJTL since 1984 or 2024. 40 Fest will pro -

vide a fun day for all.”

WJTL’s story began in 1984, when the station was housed in a renovated chicken house across from Lancaster Bible College, recalled president Fred McNaughton.

“During this time, WJTL expanded its reach, going 24 hours and beginning to broadcast in stereo, while also engaging with the community through various events, including a popular weekly roller skate to contemporary Christian music,” he said.

By the mid-1990s, WJTL had moved to a new location on Oregon Pike. “WJTL also began inviting local organizations to the morning show to share their stories and promote their events,” McNaughton said.

In 2011, the station relocated to its current home at The Junction Center in Manheim. “The move

to The Junction Center not only allowed WJTL to continue its community-focused approach, but it also provided a space to invite and host listeners and other community groups in new and engaging ways,” he said.

Through the years and all the changes, one thing is unchanged, he noted. “WJTL’s core mission has remained steadfast: to play great Christian music that inspires and challenges its listeners, to serve its community with all its heart and to honor the Lord Jesus Christ in all it does,” he said.

As for the next 40 years, listeners can expect to continue to hear the live voices of friends in the community, said Stacey Gagne, vice president of operations.
