UnSilent Cinema follows up last year’s success with feature-length silent films and female artists Juana Molina and Julia Holter performing the World Premieres of their original scores on September 28 & 29 Los Angeles, CA August 21, 2017 – In a two-night production, the not-so-silent silver screen is returning to downtown Los Angeles to excite the senses at UnSilent Cinema. The outdoor event will take over downtown Los Angeles’s premier shopping and dining destination, FIGat7th to showcase classic silent films brought to life by contemporary live scores. Bridging early 20th-century film masterpieces to present day’s contemporary music culture, this year’s UnSilent Cinema is inspired by female-focused music and film. Two fulllength features with strong female leads have been paired with world premier scores written and performed by two top female musicians. Screening on Thursday, September 28 is The Goddess (1934, directed by Wu Yonggang), with Argentinian singer and songwriter, Juana Molina, performing an original score written especially for UnSilent Cinema. On Friday, September 29, The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer) will be screened with a unique performance by American singer, songwriter and artist Julia Holter. Both showings open with a live set by composer and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate, who performs under the moniker Noveller and recently toured Europe and the US with Iggy Pop. UnSilent Cinema is produced by Arts Brookfield, the cultural arm of global real estate corporation Brookfield Property Partners, Martin Fleischmann of Rum & Humble, and David Spelman of the New York Guitar Festival (NYGF). “Arts Brookfield is committed to providing unique and accessible experiences for the downtown Los Angeles community,” says Bert Dezzutti, Executive Vice President of the Western Region for Brookfield Office Properties. “We are excited to collaborate with Rum & Humble and David Spelman again to produce UnSilent Cinema, especially with this year’s strong female leads across both film and music.” “The sonic range of this year’s women composers dovetails with the ineffable mysteries of the central female characters on-screen. It’s a correspondence of sound waves with emotional journeys depicted in silence -- imbuing a voice to the voiceless, as it were,” says Spelman.

Due to overwhelming demand, The Broad has announced additional tickets and extended hours for the upcoming special exhibition, Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors. These newly announced tickets will go on sale Monday, October 2 at noon PT, and are expected to sell out quickly. During the September 1 ticket release, the initial offering of 50,000 tickets sold out in less than two hours. The Broad has decided to stay open an additional 14 hours each week, for a total of 62 operational hours per week. In addition to these extended hours, the museum is also increasing the number of visitors it will accommodate during operating hours. This increase in both hours and visitors per hour will allow for nearly 40,000 additional advance tickets to be made available in the upcoming release. Interested ticket buyers should visit thebroad.org anytime between 11 a.m. and noon PT on October 2 and will be placed in an online waiting room. All users in the waiting room by noon will have an equal opportunity for access to tickets. At noon exactly, all users in the online waiting room will receive one of two messages: they will either receive a randomized number that will allow them to book tickets, or they will be informed that they were not randomly selected. Due to extremely high demand, not every user who joins the online waiting room will be able to purchase tickets. All users who receive a number will be able to purchase tickets. In addition to this second ticket release, a limited number of same-day standby tickets will be available each day throughout the run of the exhibition, for both regular hours and extended hours. Standby tickets will be available onsite on a first-come, first-served basis. Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors opens at The Broad on October 21, 2017, and runs through January 1, 2018. After years of success in Washington, DC, and Virginia, Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken opened its first West Coast location in Downtown Los Angeles, bringing its seasonal and creative menu to a town that is notoriously in love with doughnuts. The story behind Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken is as whimsical as their unique roster of doughnuts and sandwiches. Co-founders Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern grew up playing hockey together, and doughnuts were the reward of choice after games. Halpern later went on to play professional hockey including a season with the Los Angeles Kings. Spaisman, with a long-standing career in antiques, was always a lover of food, having worked at a gourmet food market throughout his high school and college years. Inspired by a fond childhood memory, he and Halpern decided to offer a fun interpretation on two comfort food favorites. The new, 400-square-foot dining room in Los Angeles has limited indoor and outdoor seating and features reclaimed wood with industrial metal accents, quartz countertops, as well as a show kitchen where customers can watch the frying magic happen.

ART SPOTLIG ON ANDREW EYLER by

GHT W

GDCA Gallery is proud to present: “TWILIGHT” – A photographic journey into the subconscious. “Andrew Eyler’s first solo exhibit, “Twilight” has been called primitive and alluring. Witness life-size impressions of earth transform into reflections of a primordial past; a real Jungian experience with images designed to alter space and time.” The identification is immediate. We are drawn in by the perceived familiarity of the images. We could swear we have seen these images before – or something almost exactly like it - or have we? Andrew Eyler argues that we have not only seen but rather lived these images before -– only it may not have been in this incarnation…not in this lifetime. Encountering Andrew Eyler’s haunting, timeless landscapes, we are swept into a world of memories, associations, and emotions, leaving us breathless, stunned and deeply moved. What just happened here? What trickery is this? As a Jungian psychologist, Eyler believes that we as a species are imprinted and shaped by certain Archetypes, which we recognize in art and other human constructs, because they are part of our collective unconscious, etched into our emotional and psychic DNA. “Jung’s view of the world inspired me to photograph what I describe as ‘archaic memories,’ close-up impressions of earth, that appear to accentuate “Pareidolia,” a phenomenon where illusive shapes become (through the mind’s eye) recognizable and meaningful objects.” A.E. According to Eyler, the images that unfold before us, when we take the time to “see,” to “observe,” have always been there – waiting to be revealed. However, the experience is supremely personal, as the imagery the viewer identifies, will depend entirely on their archetypal make-up. The scale of his photographs is purposeful. They feel close to life-size, allowing us to project ourselves into them. “The more you observe, the evolutionary images and memories (interwoven within and all around) materialize for a brief moment, then reappear at another place in time; transforming when darkness is upon us.” A.E. Eyler’s sensitive photographic eye makes the invisible visible. He coaxes to the surface of our awareness,

forms, and faces buried in our visual and emotional collective psychic memory. His works are roadmaps to a forgotten world. A metaphoric Rosetta Stone bridging the unknown to the known. One can practically feel our psychic split healing before our very eyes. We are one step closer to a unified existence. One step closer to HOME. Andrew Eyler’s photographs will be on view at GDCA Gallery October 5th – October 31st, 2017. For more information, please contact Petra@GDCAgallery.com or call # (323) 309-2875.

THE SOUNDS OF LA

S

Audio specialist Sennheiser has collaborated with Los Angeles-based tech and fashion curator BrandsWalk to create an immersive 3D audio and visual art installation unlike any other: The Sounds of LA. The public art installation, to be held between October 14th through October 20th at Downtown L.A.’s The Bloc, allows visitors to interact with their favorite sounds of the city — all captured on the AMBEO SMART HEADSET by L.A. social influencers and content curators. The AMBEO SMART HEADSET will be available in the U.S. from 19th October. The art installation features a large 6’ gallery cube on which a static image from each storyteller is cast. Accessing an adjacent kiosk with a pair of headphones, attendees can then listen to a fully immersive, 3D audio track that each storyteller created while experiencing a different ‘unique slice’ of L.A. — each segment captured using the Sennheiser AMBEO SMART HEADSET. The content itself ranges from skating through the streets of downtown L.A. and hiking Los Liones to the sounds of music and the city.

“Los Angeles is the capital and birthplace of skateboarding, and the sound of a skateboard always makes me turn my head,” he says. “With the Sennheiser AMBEO SMART HEADSET, I am able to capture flawless audio in 360 degrees while using just a pair of headphones. Playback gives one the feeling of being there in real life, and the listener can hear exactly what the skateboarder heard while he was on his board.” The Bloc and BrandsWalk present an ideal platform for the ‘Sounds of LA’ cooperation, combining a vibrant, open-air environment with a community that is deeply rooted in both fashion and technology. The Bloc — which spans a full L.A. city block and is a convergence point for four separate Metro lines — combines a truly unique array of retail shops and entertainment to create a stimulating urban center.

Inside the BrandsWalk store, which is directly adjacent to the installation area, visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the AMBEO SMART HEADSET from Sennheiser brand ambassadors. Also, visitors can “We invite the public to visit the ‘Sounds of take time to browse through the store’s imLA’ art installation, which provides a startling maculately curated collection of tech-fashion glimpse into the future of audio,” comment- products that speak to the individuality and ed Stefanie Reichert, Director Trade Market- tech-savviness of the millennial generation. ing, Retail, Americas at Sennheiser. “With the help of our friends at BrandsWalk, The Bloc “We are excited to debut the Sennheiser AMand our talented pool of influencers and con- BEO SMART HEADSET at our Los Angeles tent curators around L.A., we are showcasing flagship store at The Bloc in downtown LA,” a revolutionary way of capturing content that said Mary Lee, President of BrandsWalk. “It’s requires the use of just a smartphone and the been our vision to provide our customers the new Sennheiser AMBEO SMART HEADSET. experience to touch and feel the products in Immersive audio technology has arrived for our store, and we would like to thank Sennthe masses, and the possibilities are only lim- heiser and The Bloc for making this possible.” ited by each user’s imagination.” BrandsWalk’s Los Angeles flagship store is Chris Ray, a Los Angeles-based filmmaker, is located at the plaza level of The Bloc, 700 among the content curators to be featured South Flower, Los Angeles, CA 90017. during the installation. Los Angeles’ iconic Grand Central Market - the granddaddy of U.S. food halls - turns 100 years old October 27 and has invited the city of Los Angeles, led by Mayor Eric Garcetti, to blow out the candles on appropriately enough, one of the tallest birthday cakes ever created standing one-story high with more than 100 layers. The world-renowned market opened its doors on October 27, 1917, and has been in continuous operation ever since. Today, classic neon signage over Market stalls spotlights the flavorful mix of fresh produce, meat, spices and prepared foods that reflect the ethnic diversity of L.A. and the most exciting culinary trends coming out of the City of Angels. “Grand Central Market is proud to be one of very few institutions to survive 100 years in Los Angeles,” said Adele Yellin, owner of Grand Central Market. “Its longevity is due in large part to how the Market has kept reinventing itself as Downtown and the entire city has changed and evolved. It’s exciting to celebrate the rich history of the Market and imagine what’s in store in the decades to come.”

Over a century ago, Angelenos rode the Angels Flight Railway from stately Victorian mansions atop nearby Bunker Hill down to do their food shopping at the city’s premier purveyors in the Market. All visitors who check in at the Market between 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. will receive a token for a FREE round-trip ride on historic Angels Flight, while kids 12 and under ride Angels Flight FREE all day. The evening will also be filled with musical groups representing the different decades of the Market’s history, a Paper Moon Vintage photo booth, costume contest, commemorative lapel pins, book signing of The Grand Central Market Cookbook and more.

As the sun rises on the Market on its 100th birthday, a massive installation of 13,000 balloons - the largest ever in DTLA and created by world-renowned artist Jihan Zencirli of Geronimo Balloons -- will cascade over the Hill Street facade of the building signaling the start of the celebration. Individual balloons will range in size between 10 inches and 8 feet. It will take a total of 300 man hours to assemble this whimsical, site-specific balloon sculpture. The festivities kick into high-gear at 10:30 a.m. with the unveiling of a 100-layer, one-story tall birthday cake created by Valerie Gordon of Valerie Confections with free slices for everyone. The construction of the cake will involve a series of many multi-layer bricks to create one large structure. In this instance, Valerie will use 90 six-layer cakes, varying in size from 8 to 6-inch squares and 12 ten-layer cakes, varying in size from 10 to 16-inch squares. Ingredients for this remarkable cake include 390 pounds of butter, 325 pounds of sugar, 1750 eggs and 125 pounds of chocolate. The cake is layered chocolate and vanilla with strawberry filling. The exterior of the cake is decorated with whole fruits, large foliage, and flowers - an homage to the cover of the recently released Grand Central Market Cookbook. From 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the Market thanks Angelenos for 100 years of support with a free birthday bash. Market vendors will serve up specials inspired by the food hall’s history and the number 100. These will range from Belcampo’s 100-day dry aged burger

MEWALK

Eleven years ago, a few thousand Angelenos came together for HomeWalk and helped change lives for the better. Los Angeles was struggling to stop homelessness from growing and needed a way to rally support. The first HomeWalk answered the call, proving that Angelenos could -- and would -- come together to rally and fight to end homelessness. Today United Way continues to gather thousands to walk, raise awareness and to fundraise — because United, we can end homelessness in L.A. for good. As a community, we’ve made significant strides in our mission to create pathways out of poverty in L.A. County: thousands of Angelenos have received the education, housing, and financial stability assistance they need to live better lives. While United Way has led the effort to raise nearly $5 billion in public funding to end homelessness, there’s still a lot to be done to get more than 57,000 Angelenos off the street. No man, woman, child, or veteran deserves to suffer at night. We have the resources to end this. Join us at DTLA LIFE MAG and team Paramount Pictures on November 18th, for the 2017 HomeWalk in Downtown LA. Your help can change this. FIRST RESPOND

DERS

The Downtown Center Business Improvement District (DCBID) and more than 1,000 DTLA workers and community members honored its first responders September 28th at the 18th Annual Public Safety BBQ at Bank of America Plaza, DTLA’s longest running service celebration event. Members of the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, FBI, California Highway Patrol, LA County Sheriff’s Department, and other safety personnel were feted with a free BBQ lunch, live music, and the camaraderie of the downtown LA community. The event was highlighted by a $5,000 charitable donation to the Los Angeles Firemen’s Relief Association, an organization that provides support programs and assistance for firefighters and their families. This year’s donation was made possible by the generosity of event sponsors including Brookfield, Allied Universal, Central City Association of Los Angeles, Coretrust Capital Partners, Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board, South Park Business Improvement District, St. Vincent Jewelry, the Los Angeles Downtown News, and the DCBID. Once again, the Downtown LA community came out to show their civic pride and their support of the people who work tirelessly to make DTLA a great place to live, work and visit. “Our first responders are so incredibly good at what they do, we often take their brave and lifesaving efforts for granted,” said Carol Schatz, President, and CEO of the DCBID. “That’s why we are so very proud to host this event each year as a way to recognize their unwavering commitment and to say thank you for all they do.” For nearly 20 years, the DCBID has been a catalyst in the transformative Downtown Los Angeles Renaissance, and especially the central Financial District. Since 1999, Downtown has seen its residential population blossom from approximately 20,000 to more than 65,000. Driven largely by this residential growth, Downtown LA has seen a recent influx of billions of investment, hundreds of new businesses, restaurants, and retailers, becoming the true heart of the city. For a recap of the event and more information about the DCBID, please visit www.downtownla.com.
