THE A

ABOVE ANGELS

Imagine the excitement of breathtaking visuals from the tallest building west of Chicago. Miles of glass and steel shaped 73 stories high rising 1,100 feet above street level. A structure that on the outside redefines the Los Angeles skyline, but on the inside, the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown hotel presents the glamor and exhilaration that defines what it means to live the InterContinental life, with its rich, storied history and the promise of good things to come. The promise on the newly opened Intercontinental Hotel website does not disappoint. The long anticipated Downtown LA’s newest 900 rooms hotel in the Wilshire Grand, the most exciting ground-up development in decades. According to IHG Group, the 73 stories building is now the tallest building west of Chicago rising at 1,100 feet, and the host of the largest Intercontinental in the Americas. It is also the first hotel on the west coast to have a sky lobby above 70th floors. Downtown LA-based architect firm, AC Martin, designed a modern tower that redefines the Los Angeles skyline. The rooftop deck will offer to guests; restaurants, bars, swimming pool and fantastic 360-degree views of Los Angeles. And because all these spectacular amenities were not sufficient in the eyes of developers’ partner Korean Air, it is the only skyscraper in the city with a high-tech LED lighting on the facade featuring an infinity of light shows capable of welcoming the airline passengers landing at LAX. Korean Air’s $1.1 billion mixed-use development in the heart of Downtown LA’s Financial District will include not only the hotel but new office space as well as over 45,000 square feet of retail on the ground floor. We encourage everyone to visit this fabulous new addition to Downtown LA, proving that our neighborhood is an actual city center, with everything at our footsteps.

6AM

The internationally renowned design firm of Herzog & de Meuron has been working with developer SunCal to create “6AM,” a world-class, mixed-use development at 6th & Alameda in the heart of the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. The Pritzker Prize-winning firm is planning a complex that will feature live/work residences, creative offices, hotel and retail uses, and public gathering spaces on a 14.5-acre site. This project is envisioned to feature a contemporary design that assesses and understands the character of the Arts District and expresses it in a building concept for today and the future. In all its details, 6AM will remain faithful to the well-articulated preferences of the local community, which include high-quality design, durable materials and a place where “art can flourish in the Arts District.” The 6AM site is the single largest parcel in the Arts District, and this development will bring significant benefits to the community, such as a school and art opportunity space, that residents and visitors alike can enjoy. It will provide public and private outdoor space, art creation space and exhibition space, school, fitness centers, outdoor pools and spas, a grocer and food hall, and abundant parking. Keeping with the fabric and characteristics of the Arts District has been a priority in shaping the plans for 6AM. This project embodies various recommendations from public planning workshops held by local organizations that were open to Arts District stakeholders. These supported recommendations include improved pedestrian infrastructure; more green space; exhibition venues; alternative energy sources; a river walk; public art; and maintaining the unique character of the Arts District. Herzog & de Meuron are among the most thoughtful and accomplished design firms in the world. Each of their designs – which includes the “Bird’s Nest” Olympic Stadium in Beijing, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, 1111 Lincoln Road and the Perez Art Museum in Miami – responds uniquely to its context and purpose. Based in Basel, Switzerland, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron won the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s highest international honor, in 2001. Based on the heritage and characteristics, or typologies, that define the Arts District, Herzog & de Meuron have evolved the architectural concept of the “Fabric,” “Table,” “Fingers” and “Skyline” for 6AM. The entire property is defined by a horizontal “Table” at an elevation of 40 feet, re-

specting the height of surrounding buildings, with two or three levels of retail and other uses underneath within the “Fabric” in a series of individual buildings. Above the “Table” are a series of “Fingers,” which are buildings housing apartments and creative office space that blend with surrounding structures. The “Skyline” will bring two 58-story residential towers that respond to the shapes and scale of the Downtown skyline. These towers also mark the intersection of 6th and Alameda streets as a prominent place within the District. “Los Angeles is one of the leading cities in the world, and the Arts District is an area rich with a distinct heritage, well-defined characteristics and a diversity of creative uses,” said Stephan Elieff, President, SunCal. “We envision a multi-faceted, arts-inspired development that respects and builds on the area’s cultural atmosphere, responds to the preferences of the community and includes some beneficial features that residents and visitors can enjoy.” As with all recent projects proposed by the design team, 6AM will incorporate innovations to improve the efficiency of water use, including storm water management and energy consumption. The sustainability advantages, active and passive utility management, and recycling systems will conform to a LEED Silver Certifiable Standard that will help the environment. 6AM is DTLA LIFE MAG ® favorite upcoming concept, and we cannot wait to see it coming to life.

Developed by Rudolph Rosenberg in 1924, the Commercial Exchange building played a significant role in the expansion of Los Angeles’ urban core. It is where local businesses, like the Owl Drug Company, had its first retail drug store - and where Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan, had his publishing headquarters. Sydell’s longtime Freehand collaborator Roman and Williams bridged the gap between these two eras to create a conversation between past and future, layering a modern interpretation of LA’s evolving urban landscape over meticulously restored interiors.

The story of creation is the story of color. The story of color is the story of emotion. Before there words, there was color. Colors so powerful that they caused a vocal reaction -Raw, throaty vowels, salacious sibilants, Resonant consonants, aerated breath. Color gave birth to sound. When music can no longer be contained, it breaks into movement and dance. Linda Stelling’s Alchemy series paintings dance across the canvas. Like it or not, we are bathed in intense and joyous bursts of primal chromatic explosions. Her colors pour onto the canvas and off the canvas, bouncing around the room like beams of light. Her liquid layers are studies in juxtaposition as much as in gradation of tone. Just like in life, just like in love, things that should not make sense, do. Colors that should not fit together, unfold in perfect harmony. They defy psychological narrative. They simply are filled with the one thing that theory cannot provide – the very vibrancy of life.

ARTISTS APPLY

Photos Courtesy of the MAIN MUSEUM

S

The Main Museum in Downtown Los Angeles announced today that it would open five new studio spaces in January 2018 for its artist-in-residence program. With studios located onsite at the museum and monthly honoraria offered to participating artists, the museum’s expanded interdisciplinary residency program, which formalizes facets of the current program, furthers The Main’s central mission of supporting practicing Los Angeles–based artists. Applications are currently being accepted through October 2, 2017, for residencies beginning in January 2018. When The Main opened its preliminary space, Beta Main, in October 2016 for public exhibitions and programs, the museum also opened two residency studios. The spaces have since been used by artists Andrea Bowers, Sid Dueñas, Lauren Halsey, and Suzanne Lacy. The studios are currently being occupied by photographer Star Montana, whose work is now on view in Beta Main’s exhibition Star Montana: I Dream of Los Angeles, and Carolina Caycedo, who is producing new work for the fall show A Universal History of Infamy at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time, PST: LA/LA initiative. True to the nature of Beta Main—a physical and conceptual space for experimentation in anticipation of the fully-realized and currently under-construction museum—this new iteration of the residency program was informed by lessons from Beta Main’s inaugural year with artists-in-residence. The observations tell The Main’s current efforts to formalize areas of the program that were already in place, as well as extending the museum’s commitment to support more artists with expanded studio spaces. “Supporting emerging L.A. artists through our artist-in-residence program is at the core of everything we do at The Main,” said Allison Agsten, director of The Main. “We developed this residency almost before we developed plans for the museum. Through this residency, we aim to help artists advance their practices in an environment that cultivates expansive thinking and working. We also support artists by addressing the need for studio space—something both critical to artists and the cultural vibrancy of our city.”

The residency program—a platform for experimentation and the development of ideas on contemporary artistic creation in L.A.—offers artists a free private studio and an honorarium of $1,000 per month. A variety of disciplines are accepted including, but not limited to, visual arts, media/new genre, performance, film/video, music/sound, choreography, and writing. Artists are invited to use the space as they wish, with no expectation of producing new work, although some residencies may result in exhibitions or public programs. Residencies can last anywhere from three to nine months, depending on the needs of each artist. This opportunity for extensive time in the residency program allows for artists-in-residence to develop strong connections with the museum, other artists working in the space, and the surrounding community. In addition to the physical studio space and financial resources of the residency, distinguishing features of the program include access to The Main Museum staff and relevant artists, curators, critics, and educators. With residency studios connected to staff offices, The Main’s team members work in close collaboration with artists-in-residence to arrange individual studio visits, facilitate research, liaise with media, develop connections and programs with the surrounding community, and provide a supportive and collaborative environment. Applications for residencies beginning in January 2018 are currently being accepted. Application materials must be received by Monday, October 2, 2017. Applications will be reviewed by Allison Agsten, director of The Main, and Monica Rodriguez, curatorial associate. All finalists will be contacted via email to make interview arrangements by Monday, October 16. Learn more about how to apply at themainmuseum.org/all-residents

SUMMER TIME AT THE MUS CENTER & GRAN PARK

THE MUSIC CENTER’S DANCE DTLA Fridays: June 23 to September 1, 2017 Including Dance Downtown, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. DJ Nights, 9:00 p.m. – midnight A summer favorite now in its 13th year, The Music Center’s Dance DTLA is an evening of dance under the stars on most Friday nights in the summer months, from June – September 2017. Hosted this year entirely in Grand Park, the series features Dance Downtown (7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.), every other Friday night, where participants can learn new dance moves in a judgment-free zone with a different dance genre at each event. From Cumbia to Disco and Line Dancing, Dance Downtown welcomes anyone who loves to dance to learn some new moves in the heart of Los Angeles’ civic center. The Music Center’s Dance DTLA events will be held at various locations throughout Grand Park. Held on alternating Friday nights and curated by influential artists and tastemakers who give voice to Los Angeles’ dynamic and vibrant culture through music, dancing, arts, and aesthetics, DJ Nights (9:00 p.m. – midnight) offers Angelenos the opportunity to dance the night away in Grand Park.

THE RED SHOES September 15, 2017 – October 1, 2017 The Music Center’s Ahmanson Theatre Dance at The Music Center opens the season with Matthew Bourne’s signature blend of inventive choreography, whimsical costuming and beguiling theater in the U.S. premiere of The Red Shoes, presented by Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center and Center Theatre Group. As a beloved fairytale and Academy Award-winning movie, this captivating story has seduced audiences and inspired generations of dancers with its tale of obsession, possession and one girl’s dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. A quintessential backstage drama brought to life on stage, the ballet echoes the movie’s storyline where Victoria Page lives to dance, but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion.

and Paul Groothuis (sound). The Red Shoes is set to a new score arranged by New Adventures Associate Artist Terry Davies using the mesmerizing music of golden-age Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann (most famous for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, and Martin Scorsese). “Bourne’s production provides something that Powell and Pressburger by definition couldn’t: the immediacy of flesh-and-blood dancers, right before your eyes,” said Mark Monahan of The Daily Telegraph. “It’s a complicated story, one that ricochets between London and France, art and real life. And, brilliantly aided and abetted by his long-standing designer Lez Brotherston, Bourne lets it unfold clearly and urgently, with no prior knowledge of the film necessary.”

MUSIC CENTER ON LOCATION This summer, as part of The Music Center On Location, The Music Center will partner with the Ford Theatres, as part of IGNITE @ the FORD, to present three special evenings at the beautifully renovated amphitheater. The Music Center On Location at the Ford Theatres will include performances by internationally acclaimed dance company Aszure Barton & Artists; a double bill of contemporary dance by Jacob Jonas The Company, along with another artist to be announced; and a concert under the stars by singer, songwriter, and composer Rufus Wainwright.

GRAND PARK BOOTCAMP All summer long, Grand Park visitors can explore the entire park and get a free workout at the same time at Grand Park’s Bootcamp. Open to everyone and all fitness levels, this free series is a fun way to connect with others and make an end-of-day workout accessible and fun. Boot camp sessions are held on Grand Park’s Event Lawn (between Spring St. and N Broadway) every Tuesdays beginning June 6th through September 26th.

She moved to her home in Carter Lake, Iowa in 1962 with her husband John White from Alabama.

What Flo loved most about Downtown, was that she lived near her son Jim, and that he took such wonderful care of her every need. She could frequently be heard saying, “My Jimmy treats me like a queen”.

Together, Flo and John raised two boys. One of her son, Jim White, is a long-term resident of Downtown L.A. and a co-founder of the successful Real Estate firm knowed today as DTLA LIFE.

Flo was a master of relationships because she expressed so much love and respect for everyone in her life. People were attracted to her glowing presence and she was a wise sage to many.

Flo loved her life in and on Carter Lake. She spent many hours boating, paddle boating and swimming in the actual Lake, on her backyard. She always welcomed friends and acquaintances into her home to “enjoy life on the lake”.

She adopted her dear friend Julie Anderson of DTLA as her official daughter. Julie was a key person in her life along with her favorite French son, Alex LiMandri.
