It is not going to be the five-star hotel and residences that were proposed a few years ago. However Park Fifth is finally happening. Directly across from Pershing Square, diagonal to the historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel and one block south of Grand Central Market, Park Fifth will offer a total of 660 new luxury apartments. The project includes two towers: A seven-story residential building with street-level retail space that serves as the first phase of the development, and a 24-story residential high-rise with street-level retail space. Amenities of the seven-story tower will include a 14,000-squarefoot outdoor courtyard on an elevated podium deck for dining and recreation areas; a pool deck with a zero-edge swimming pool, cabanas, a poolside bar and hot tub; and an indoor/outdoor fitness center with cardio equipment, a weight room and “fitness-on-demand virtual group fitness services. The high-rise planned amenities include a 360-degree-view rooftop deck featuring a club room, a fitness center, a clubhouse with a bar/kitchen, TVs, ample seating and a business center, and an infinity-edge pool with cabanas; on-site resident concierge services; a Controlled-access bike storage and repair area; and a dog walk and washing station. Downtown LA keeps growing and we are not going to complain about it.

Spring is the long-awaited passion project of Restaurateur Yassmin Sarmadi and her partner, husband Executive Chef Tony Esnault. Nestled on the ground floor of the Douglas Building, built in 1898, the restaurant design was conceived by Sarmadi and Esnault and brought to life by architect David Wick and interior designer Beth Thorne. Spring marks Wick’s second collaboration with Sarmadi, following the design of Church & State in 2008. Artfully divided into two distinct areas, overseen by General Manager Jennifer Courtney direct from a 15-year tenure at Roland Passot’s Left Bank Brasserie, Spring provides varied atmospheres for dining and cocktailing experiences. Anchoring the space at the corner of Spring and 3rd Street is an intimate lounge with rich dark wood paneling and plush green tufted seating areas, which plays host to a large bar, backed by turquoise walls dotted with vintage artwork. Crafted as a respite for downtown denizens before or after a meal, pastis and classic cocktails by Assistant General Manager Adam Flamenbaum are presented in a collection of antique glassware.

earth tone uniforms by Downtown Design League add the finishing touch to Sarmadi and Esnault’s second venture, Spring. Since its debut in February last year, Spring has paved the way for sophisticated fine dining in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, with fresh and local ingredients reigning supreme. The Spring menu of seafood, vegetables, and lighter fare is in contrast to the venerable big brother restaurant, Church & State, which has long been touted as a preeminent restaurant for hearty and rich French bistro cuisine. Spring is open for lunch every Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, for dinner every Tuesday through Friday from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and Saturday dinner from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The Spring Lounge opens every Tuesday through Saturday at 5:00 pm

In the dining room, an approachable menu of Old World wines from France, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Spain, selected by Sarmadi and Esnault, are served by Sommeliers Victor Moreno and Blue Grant. Adjoining the lounge, you will discover an airy atrium with a glass and steel A-frame ceiling. Tables and sage-colored chairs are scattered amongst two large pepper trees and a fountain in the center of the dining room. The awe-inspiring open kitchen, running the length of the dining room, is furnished with white subway tile, gleaming pots, and is visible from three sides. In addition to the elegant white marble bar within the central dining room, brass accents and antiques, personally sourced by Esnault and Sarmadi, add a French je ne sais quoi. Lining the walls, a series of French doors reminiscent of a private residence on the Riviera reveal an intimate private dining room that hosts 30 guests. Guests mingling before a meal can peruse the glass antique display case of vintage cooking tools, collected by Esnault over 20 years, or peek over the chef’s counter to the array of ceramic vessels from the couple’s personal collection mixed artfully with colorful spices. The Bradbury Building in Downtown LA added a new tenant that we are excited about. Blue Bottle Coffee just, opened their newest Los Angeles cafe on Third and Broadway. The Building, borne of unusual circumstances in the late 1800s, the Bradbury shapeshifts as fluidly as a character actor, but its bare bones are nothing short of breathtaking. Jo Nagasaka of Schemata, the architect behind Blue Bottle’s Tokyo cafes, infuses the majesty of the Bradbury with a dose of simplicity in their ground-floor cafe. The understated lightness of Baltic birch wood on the counters contrasts with the flooring, which has been sanded to reveal the building’s original terrazzo tile and concrete. The cafe also hosts Blue Bottle’s first library, where guests can buy books or just lose themselves momentarily in an author’s world. Profits from all book sales benefit the nearby Library Foundation of Los Angeles. Espresso and pour-over coffees are complemented by breakfast, lunch, and pastries.

Guido in LA is a new vintage clothing and housewares shop located in downtown Los Angeles. Look for the unique shaving products, soaps, toiletries, and other sundries. Everything is hand picked in our store and have an array of vintage men’s and women’s clothing from the 60s to the 90s, from t-shirts to designer dresses and suits. Their vintage hats range from the 40s to contemporary, and they have many styles for women and men to choose. Their great selection of sunglasses, shoes, and scarves is amazing, and they just got in over 60 pairs of “new” frames from the 70s ad 80s. Jason and Victor Perez-Galloway used to run the shop online from their loft in DTLA. When the perfect spot opened, they jumped at the opportunity and opened directly across the street from their home.

Manuela brings some Southern charm to the culinary landscape of Los Angeles’ Arts District. Partnering with Iwan and Manuela Wirth, Executive Chef Wes Whitsell channels his Texas upbringing and uses artisanal techniques of in-house smoking, fermenting, preserving and pickling with homegrown ingredients. Utilizing his strong relationships with farms throughout Southern California, Chef Whitsell has centered Manuela’s menu around locally grown produce, seafood and grass-fed livestock, sourcing each ingredient for flavor and seasonality, an ethos that is shared with both Iwan and Manuela Wirth. A kitchen garden provides the restaurant with seasonal herbs, fruits, and vegetables as well as a beautifully designed chicken house and run for the restaurant’s 12 rare-breed chickens. Located inside the Hauser Wirth & Schimmel arts complex and paying homage to the architecture of the original building, designer Matt Winter of M Winter Design has created a dining area with a classic mid-century feel. With features such as a stunning brass and marble bar stretching the length of the restaurant, comfortable banquette seating and an array of vintage furniture, the atmosphere is relaxed and informal.

Considered one of the largest international art fairs in The United States, with 70,000 attendees, the LA Art Show has significantly expanded its footprint for its 22nd edition this January. This year fair featured the most international list of exhibitors to date, with more than 100 galleries from over 20 countries including China, Czechoslovakia, France, Japan, Mexico and the United Kingdom; and an exciting roster of new exhibitions and programs curated by major local and international museums and arts organizations. In recognition of Los Angeles’s new position as a worldwide hub for cutting-edge contemporary art across all mediums — from painting, sculpture, and drawing to performance, video, and installation — the fair’s board of directors has placed a new focus on post-war modern and contemporary artwork. This year the LA Art Show launched ROOTS, an exclusive curated section of historical dealers from the old Los Angeles Fine Art Show, presenting exhibitions of 18th Century European, Contemporary Realism, California Plein Air, and Hudson River School paintings. An event to calendar every year.

Often the beginning of the year is an opportunity for us to set intentions. We have taken stock in our lives, realized what we have to be thankful for and reflected upon the areas that need improvements, or the ways in which we would like to challenge ourselves. This year came with a few more surprises than we had anticipated, and that sort stole the thunder from personal goals. Many of us feel uprooted and uncertain and discouraged. These are the times when we need to remind each other that our strength always resides in people, in the members of our communities, large and small. Our actions of love and kindness and support are what will keep us going. They will build the net of support, through which we will eventually feel strong enough, secure enough and motivated enough to reach for our dreams again. In that spirit, GDCA wanted to set the following intentions of love and kindness, through the offerings of 16 amazing downtown artists - offerings of color and spirit, intelligence, grace, beauty, and joy. You are still an artist, a writer, a builder, a developer of ideas and objects and movements. Your place in the creative cycle, whether it be on the producing or supporting end, is as vital as ever. Your muses are still here. Your joy will be rebound and grow stronger in the process. Participating Artists: Nurit Avesar, Susanne Belcher, Arnor Bieltvedt, Michele Castagnetti, Gianfranco Cioffi, Carol Cirillo Stanley, Nina Covington, Holly Elander, Mary Fashbaugh, Karen Hansen, Hollie Heller, Stuart Marcus, Crystal Michaelson, Michael Moon, Richard Reiner, Lisa Scadron & Aaron Swindell. Arts Brookfield, the cultural arm of the global real estate corporation Brookfield, presents a multi-property, large-scale art installation by renowned LA artist, John Van Hamersveld— Signs of Life. Beginning February 10 and running through March 31, it will span across FIGat7th and Bank of America Plaza on Bunker Hill. The two sites will feature vibrant, pop art imagery. The installations are free and open to the public as part of Arts Brookfield’s continued effort to bring Brookfield’s public spaces to life through art. Known for his legendary concert poster of Jimi Hendrix at LA’s Shrine Auditorium and quintessential artwork from the movie The Endless Summer, Van Hamersveld has played an instrumental role in shaping the visual culture of rock n’ roll and SoCal life since the 1960s. His full design of the 1984 Olympic Mural at the LA Coliseum brought him, as well as Los Angeles, worldwide attention. The impact of the Endless Summer movie poster led Van Hamersveld to Capitol Records, where he worked on the design of numerous chart-topping records that still resonate today including The Magical Mystery Tour Beatles Album, The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street, The Grateful Dead’s Skeletons from the Closet, and Kiss’ Hotter than Hell. In the 80s and 90s, Van Hamersveld worked with various corporations as a design consultant, focusing on the communication of ideas and attitude through imagery. Van Hamersveld’s design work has included projects for Kate Mantilini Restaurant, LA Style, Buzz Magazine, Gotcha Surfware and a rebranded drive-through window for Fatburger. Downtown LA pets have now their museum. Originally founded as the National Museum of Animals & Society in 2010 by Carolyn Merino Mullin, the organization operated as an online and mobile museum and moved into its first building on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood in 2013. With the dedication of Board Co-Chairpersons, Ellen Lavinthal and Shelley Traywick, the Board of Directors expanded during this time in Hollywood and significant funds were raised to move the museum into a larger facility in the Arts District in downtown Los Angeles in 2016. The mission of the Animal Museum is to preserve, interpret and share their inspiring legacy of animal protection, to nurture current and future generations’ overall awareness about animals in society and to empower change. At the same time, they want to bring awareness to a kinder, more compassionate world that celebrates animals as sentient beings who are deserving of our attention, understanding, and respect. They believe that the human-animal bond is a rich, shared experience and that we have the capacity and responsibility to honor the inherent value of the animals with whom we share the planet. We all love animals, and this addition to the neighborhood is a perfect way to honor them.

JESSICA LANG DANCE by

Alex LiMandri

The Music Center continues its season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center with performances by Jessica Lang Dance for three days starting February 17 at The Music Center’s Ahmanson Theatre, including the West Coast premiere of Tesseracts of Time, created in collaboration with world-renowned architect Steven Holl. The three-day engagement also includes Thousand Yard Stare, a new work created by choreographer Jessica Lang in 2015, an audience favorite, Droplet, and Lang’s iconic gem, The Calling. The program highlights Lang’s keen ability to create emotionally accessible work using modern themes. From incorporating architecture, shapes, and patterns into her work, to developing pieces based on veterans’ battle experiences, Lang offers a fresh perspective on contemporary dance for the 21st century. Inspired by music, poetry, architecture and the physical connection between two individuals, Lang is described as a visual artist whose medium is dance. Her work often blends contemporary dance and ballet to present striking visual images and express an emotional experience through movement. In Tesseracts of Time, Lang collaborated with Holl to develop a piece that fuses choreography with architecture. Thousand Yard Stare sheds light on the theme of war and those who have been affected by it, while Droplet, an intimate excerpt from i.n.k., crosses genres by incorporating mixed media and connecting dancers and video through dramatic, highly fluid interaction. Finally, The Calling stuns audiences with its delicate grace and impactful beauty.

Downtown LA new condominiums have been rare since the real estate crash of 2008. This December that will change with the opening of the mega-development Metropolis in South-Park. The Chinese-built complex will not be alone to bring new homes in the area. Located on the desirable corner of South Grand Avenue and 11th Street, TEN50 is Downtown LA’s new luxury building. Large enough to be impressive. Boutique enough so each resident feels like an integral part of the tower community. The 25 stories establish a corner of creativity and cool in a city known for just that. Trumark Urban goes beyond real estate development by growing neighborhoods as well as creating stunning buildings and TEN50 is another proof of that. The architect Douglas Hanson, leads the award-winning firm HansonLA. He has helped define the changing Downtown Los Angeles skyline as well as its neighborhoods. His background made him the perfect choice for designing TEN50. You’re going to like what you see. The modern feel and the amenities is a perfect addition to the Downtown offering. 13,000 square feet of thoughtful, thought-provoking enjoyment. A lounge that doubles as an oasis. Because even though you have to leave your home on occasion, you shouldn’t want to. The Penthouses are spectacular, and the corner units with floor to ceiling windows and outdoor private balconies are perfection. Listings are courtesy of Polaris. For more information please contact us and we will send you available units and schedule a visit and make TEN50 your new home.

ART IN THE SKY by

Cybele Rowe and Kaye Freeman have been acquainted since 1985. They know each other as artistic peers and friends, first in Australia where Rowe hails from and where Freeman moved to at the age of nineteen. They rekindled their friendship during a visit by Freeman in 2014 to Rowe’s California atelier. The Love Armada collaboration began as an experiment – Rowe invited Freeman to paint the surfaces of some of her new work, wondering whether there were ways to push the boundary of the surface finishes on new, large-scale sculptures she had just completed. When Freeman began to cover the surfaces with paint, they both knew – immediately, and with force – that their collaboration was an invitation to a new level of artistic work, and to new ways of being as artists and beyond. Born in Hong Kong, raised in Tokyo, the child of British ex-patriots with eyes beyond the horizon, Kaye Freeman is truly an international artist. Based, at the moment, in the wilds of Victoria, Australia, Freeman’s abstract paintings are simple visual arrangements of vibrant colors, contrasting shapes and bold composition. Her work is described as “...an audacious realization of color, line, form, and philosophy”. Her mother, an architectural artist, brought her small, elfin daughter to countless Buddhist Temples in Tokyo, and the beauty, depth and visual excitement of these places ignited Freeman’s artistic process. Today, Kaye Freeman draws her inspiration from her travels through Japan, Mexico, Hong Kong, Britain, and the US. Freeman’s abstract drawings in paint are rooted in a lifetime study of natural form, and in a set of technical skills, developed at art school and honed to a keen edge while painting for theater and film. The sheer scale, palpable energy, and sensuality of her recent work challenge and conjures with the line, color, and shape, plumbing the viewers subconscious for organic forms, making the images ever more familiar, exuberant and affirming. Among Kaye Freeman’s many awards and plaudits is the prestigious SHE award from the Walker St. Gallery of Melbourne. In presenting the award for Freeman’s portrait depicting her mother’s end-of-life struggle, juror Angel Lange stated, “Kaye Freeman has given an incredibly moving and personal work. Each piece partakes in the journey after the seeds have been sown. Only then is the husk or shell permitted to transcend into a container for the universe. Warm memories of growing up on Sydney’s Harbor infuse her series, “Infinity. Her many journeys to Laguna Beach where she plays with her nine-year-old son and two-year-old daughter directly inspire the works created for this suite. In the space where water meets land’s edge, the possibility of the infinite begins. Here sand shores and rippling tide pools form the landscape. Water carves out transitions sometimes passively and sometimes aggressively. With her sculptures, Rowe honors these shifting forms and forces of nature. To collaborate in this way is to access the actual nature of being: Open to all possible futures and realities, especially the ones that transcend the ego and the self-as-artist, into the infinite possibilities of becoming. The Love Armada confronts in beauty the true nature of living and composes with the powerful forces with which we, as humans, face the world. The Love Armada and Freeman’s work are featured in the sky with a few of their work exposed at the Ritz-Carlton Residences 48G. The setting is out of this world, and the art takes all its dimension with the Downtown Skyline as a backdrop. The residence, own by former Entertainment Tonight Host Mary Hart and her husband businessman Burt Sugarman, is listed for sale for $8,800,000. The listing is represented by DTLA LIFE.
