The façade of 428 Hewitt would have many assume the building is an artist studio or small creative office place. Before this year, that assumption was only half right. Owners Tim and Bridget Kreihbel purchased the1904 building in 2000, living on the top floor and using the downstairs as an automotive restoration shop and workshop for artists. Partnering up with Larry Little, Paul Oberman and architect Jacek Ostoya, the Kreihbels then powered through the daunting design/pemit/build process in order to repurpose the building as a music venue/bar. The result is Resident, a casual, low-key venue for live acts, as well as spot for lingering the afternoon away. Arriving guests enter a large patio space furnished with custom wood bench and tables perched on a series of concrete platforms as well as an abundance of plantlife -- a rare and welcomed sight in the Arts District. But it’s chilly at night… They thought of that, going long on space heaters, but also placing heating elements under the concrete platforms. The space serviced by a reworked Airstream bar (a nod to Tim’s considerable restoration skills). Coffee service in on the horizon to enhance earlier arrivals. They are as intent on the music as they are on the space, recruiting Duncan Smith to delivering a diverse selection of international, national and local acts. While the vibe is relaxed they take their spirits seriously. Both bars serve a spectrum of craft beers as well as an impressive cocktail menu developed by Randy Tarlow. With the Arts District changing before our eyes, Resident has captured much of the essence of what draws people to the area in the first place.

Nestled between the Broad Museum and the Emerson, Otium awaits. With its placement behind behind Eli Broad’s olive grove, Otium it looks more like a fabulous residence you’d find on the cliffs of Big Sur rather a stand-alone restaurant on Bunker Hill. Your first tough choice: patio or inside, because both are incredible. Architect Osvaldo Maiozzi, Studio Unltd and House of Honey have delivered a singular modern but earthy space warmed with a spectrum of woods and forest hues. And word is the food is amazing. Chef Timothy Hollingsworth takes his first solo flight seriously. The menu has been described as “familiar but elevated,” a smart strategy when you have office workers and museum guests by day, cultural vultures and corporate hosts by night. Bill Chait having been at this a while, has a uncanny skill of delivering what a specific location requires. Case in point, the small, attractively stocked coffee and pastry kiosk by the Broad’s gift shop…a godsend for the throngs waiting for their timed entrance into the museum. So when can you experience Otium? Lunch, dinner and brunch are served, but don’t miss out on cocktails on the patio!

You would have to live under a rock to not know that Whole Foods has arrived in DTLA, but have you checked out the Eight Bar inside Whole Foods? Just like the grocery store that houses it, this joint is jumping. Sometimes with FIDM students having a preclass coffee, later in the day a combo of office workers, apartment dwellers and many shoppers who either come early or stay late after their shop crowd the tables. Conceived essentially as a fast casual concept, orders are placed at the bar and then brought out of your table. However, with 36 beers on tap and a spectrum of cocktails also available, this is a step up. The menu is lighter fare—think nachos to sushi plates. Depending on ingredients, prices range from $4-$18. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating offers a nice range of options. The kicker is this Eight Bar is open seven days a week from 7:00a.m. to 10:00 p.m. That is an important fact as many restaurants are dark between meals and most stores keep, well, store hours. The Eight Bar is one place you can count on to be open most of the day, any day.

One does not live by LA LIVE alone. Sometimes you are on a clock, but you still want something fresh and healthy for lunch. And if you could get it fast and not cost too much, even better! Enter EJ’s Bites, a brand spanking new Mediterranean counter service restaurant. All the pita pockets can be ordered a la carte or in one or two pita/fries/drink combos. With prices ranging from $4.29- $10.79, you can afford to make this a habit. A full selection of fountain drinks are available as well as bottled water, coconut water, raspberry tea and orange juice. The space is immaculate, well lit and inviting. So if you do have the time, you have a pleasant place to enjoy your meal. If you can’t break from that meeting, catering packages for 6 people and up are also available.

In the huge Fashion family, you have the Fashion, bohemian designer. Victor Wilde lived for over ten years in DTLA, he never had a car and moved only with his bike. He works and lives in its large studio on the 15 floors of its building from the early era of Downtown. Upon in the elevator, I’m immediately transported to a timeless universe between Metropolis and Blade Runner film and where Victor opens the door we discover its planet. He Remembers his first time in Downtown LA when he performed onstage at the Palace Theater on his third day in LA. It was a Halloween cabaret show, and his performance art group did a few numbers. He was Frankenstein. He immediately likes the neighborhood as it reminds him of home(NYC), there is an active artistic community here as well. He also does not need a car, so he does not own one. Sunset is his favorite time, probably due to the change of colors through the buildings. His favorite street is Main Street where he lives. He also likes his hidden pleasure, LAX-C a giant secret Thai grocery store in Chinatown. If DTLA were a movie, for him it would be Barfly. If it were a book, it would be his book, well the second installment of his memoir. Wilde West. If it were a perfume, it would be Sex Tape by Bohemian Society, a rhythm, a sound, music, an outstanding record, it would be Noise music. One thing he would like to point out and most people don’t know about DTLA is that it is odd that the area with the worst crime rate is centered around the police station. The Grand Central Market, The top of Angels Flight and The Bonaventure Hotel are his three favorite spots in DTLA. DTLA is changing every day. When he first moved here in 2003, there wasn’t much of anything. No place to even buy grocery. Now we have a brand new Whole Foods. The new Soho House in the arts district should be interesting although it pushed out all the musicians who used to rehearse there. He heard that we are getting a football stadium, but apparently he doesn’t follow sports, at all. Crazy, drunk, community are the three words describing Downtown LA in his mind. bohemiansociety.com

THE ENORMOUS IMPACT OF THE DOWNTOWN L.A. RENAISSANCE REVEALED TODAY AS DOWNTOWN CENTER BID RELEASES TWO NEW COMPREHENSIVE REPORTS Report from Beacon Economics Places Renaissance’s Fiscal Impact on the City in the Tens of Billions; DCBID Consumer Survey Reveals More than 80% Believe Downtown is Moving in the Right Direction The Downtown Center Business Improvement District [DCBID] released two comprehensive reports today that reveal the economic might of the Downtown LA Renaissance and the increasing excitement around its future growth. Utilizing data compiled by leading financial research firm Beacon Economics, the DCBID economic report puts the fiscal impact of the Downtown L.A. Renaissance on the city as a whole in the tens of billions, announced Carol Schatz, President, and CEO of the DCBID. The results of the organization’s 2015 survey of people who live work, and visit Downtown Los Angeles reveals broad support for the direction of Downtown’s development and enthusiasm for its continued evolution. According to Schatz, “While the impact of the Renaissance on Downtown itself is immeasurable, to learn that it has provided such a profound economic benefit to the city as a whole and has generated such passion and excitement across the region is both gratifying and highlights how important it is for Downtown to grow into its rightful place as the heart of the city.” “Despite representing only 1.2% of the land in the City of Los Angeles, Downtown now makes up 15.4% of the city’s construction permits, 12% of the jobs, 6.2% of the gross receipts and 5.3% of the net total assessed property value in Los Angeles - highlighting that our incredible growth positively affects not only Downtown but the entire region,” Schatz added. The DCBID Survey found support from 80% of respondents for the direction of Downtown’s development and highlighted the growing appeal of Downtown as a destination for residents, workers, and visitors. Key Beacon Economic Report Findings: $29.1 Billion increased economic activity from Construction Spending for completed and planned construction in DTLA (since 1999) $16.9 Billion in direct spending for goods and services from total planned and completed construction in DTLA (since 1999) $12.2 Billion in indirect/induced (multiplier) effects $10.6 Billion in labor income generated from direct and indirect/induced spending $1.2 Billion in tax revenues generated by state and local governments $24.79 Billion net total assessed property value in Downtown 71.9% increase since 2006. Compared to 48.1% for City of LA overall $28.9 Billion in annual gross receipts 25.7% increase from 2006-2013. Compared to 3.3% for City of LA overall 16.0% increase from 2008-2013 in Professional Services, the largest sector in DTLA regarding gross receipts 33.1% increase from 2008-2013 in Retail Trade 68.0% increase from 2008-2013 in Accommodation and Food Spending Key Survey Findings: 80% of respondents believe that Downtown is moving in the right direction. 78% of People who Live in Downtown have earned a BA or higher degree Individuals who live in Downtown have a Median Income of $98k 62% of People who Live/Work in Downtown walk to work 83% of People who Live in Downtown are passionate about DTLA “With construction cranes standing throughout Downtown as visible markers of the Renaissance, we felt it was time to get a real measurement of its full economic impact. And as impressive as these numbers are, they are poised to grow even larger as the under construction developments begin welcoming waves of new residents, visitors, retailers, and professional firms to our dynamic and diverse city center,” added Schatz. www.downtownla.com

from ugly duckling to smokin’ hot swan. Remember that person in high school who, when you saw them at the ten year reunion, had completely changed for the better? They were brighter. More worldly. More open minded and evolved. More sleek and much, much cooler. Imagine a building doing that and you start getting a picture of what’s happening at The Bloc. It’s undergoing a mind blowing transformation that is being talked about as the mother of all makeovers. But like reunions, good things take time. Rome wasn’t built in a day and all that. So please pardon our appearance. And please keep an eye on what we’re doing via Twitter and Instagram.
