Once there was a fox who lived by the river in the forest. สุนัขจิ้ งจอกตัวหนึ่งอาศัยอยู่ริมฝั่งแม่น�้ำใกล้ชายป่า
One day he was out hunting. วันหนึ่งมันออกล่าเหยื่อ
He found a dead body of an elephant by the river. “How lucky am I ?”, he thought to himself. สุนัขจิ้ งจอกพบซากช้างอยู่ริมฝั่งแม่น�้ำจึงคิดว่าเป็นโชคดี ของเราแล้ว
He went straight to the elephant’s dead body and tried to bite the elephant’s trunk. It was hard like a plough handle. So he decided not to eat the trunk. สุนัขจิ้ งจอกตรงไปที่ซากช้าง แล้วกัดที่งวงรู้สึกเหมือนกัดงอนไถ จึงคิดว่าที่ตรงนี้ ไม่ควรกิน
He tried biting the elephant’s ear. It was tough like the edge of the threshing basket. กัดที่ ใบหูเหมือนกัดขอบกระด้ง
He bit the elephant’s tail, it was hard like a pestle. กัดที่หางเหมือนกัดสาก
He bit the elephant’s foot, it felt like a mortar. กัดที่เท้าเหมือนกัดครก
He bit the elephant’s stomach, it was like chewing on a bin. กัดที่ท้องเหมือนกัดยุ้งข้าว
He bit the elephant’s tusk, it tasted like a pole. กันที่งาเหมือนกัดเสา
Every part of the elephant’s body was too tough to eat and they had no taste. He looked around and thought he should try the elephant’s bottom, so he did. กัดที่ตรงไหนก็แข็งไปหมดแถมยังไม่มีรสชาติ สุนัขจิ้ งจอกมองไปที่ก้นช้างแล้วตรงเข้าไปกัดที่ นั่น
Wow...it was so tasty! What a sweet treat!
เอร็ดอร่อยเหมือนกัดขนมนุ่ม
He finally found what he had been looking for. He kept eating and eating until his body had gone inside the elephant’s stomach. He ate the liver and the heart. When he felt thirsty, he drank the elephant’s blood. When he got tired, he fell asleep inside the elephant’s body.
สุนัขจิ้ งจอกกัดกินก้นช้างจนเป็นช่องขนาดใหญ่แล้วเข้าไปในท้องช้าง เคี้ยวกินตับไตล�ำไส้และหัวใจอย่างเอร็ดอร่อย เมื่อกระหายน�้ำก็เลียกินเลือด เมื่อง่วงก็เอาพื้นท้องเป็นที่ นอน
สุนัขจิ้ งจอกคิดว่าซากช้างนีเ้ ป็นเหมือนบ้านของเรา มีอาหารให้กินอย่างเหลือเฟือ มีที่ นั่งที่ นอนแสนสบาย เราไม่จ�ำเป็นต้องไปที่ ไหนอีก สุนัขจิ้ งจอกอาศัยอยู่ในท้องช้างตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา
The fox thought that he had found the best place to live forever. There were plenty of food to eat and a nice cozy place to sleep. Why should he leave? The fox decided to stay inside the elephant’s stomach from then on.
A few days later... หลายวันผ่านไป...
The elephant’s body started to shrink because of the wind and dry weather. The elephant’s bottom was tightly closed. Inside the stomach where the fox lived was very dark and extremely hot. He felt like as if he was living in hell. The body of the elephant started to dry. The fox had no food to eat and no blood to drink. He had so much suffering. He looked all around to find a way out. He tried biting the elephant’s body, that didn’t work. He got very scared. เมื่อซากช้างถูกลมพั ดและแดดแผดเผาก็หดตัว รูก้นช้างที่สุนัขจิ้ งจอกใช้เป็นทางผ่านเข้าไปปิดสนิท ภายในมืดมิดและอึดอัด สุนัขจิ้ งจอกรู้สึกราวกับอยู่ในขุมนรก เมื่อซากช้างเหี่ ยวแห้ง เนื้อและอวัยวะน้อยใหญ่ก็พลอยแห้งเหี่ ยวไปด้วย อีกทั้ งเลือดก็เหือดหาย สุนัขจิ้ งจอกได้รับความทุกข์ทรมานแสนสาหัส เพราะขาดทั้ งอาหารและอากาศ สุนัขจิ้ งจอกกระเสือกกระสนทุรนทุราย วิ่ งไปกัดทางโน้นที ทางนีท้ ีเพื่อหาทางออก
สามวันผ่านไปจึงเกิดฝนตกหนัก เมื่อซากช้างชุ ่มน�้ำก็พองตัวขึ้น
A few days later, it started to rain. The elephant’s body absorbed water from the rain. The body bloated until it returned to its normal size.
The elephant’s bottom started to open. The fox saw gleaming light like a star shining in the sky. แล้วรูก้นช้างก็เปิดออก สุนัขจิ้ งจอกเห็นแสงที่ลอดผ่าน มาทางช่องนั้นประหนึ่งดวงดาว
Suddenly, the fox had found hope. He backed himself until he could not go any farther. สุนัขจิ้ งจอกคิดว่าเรารอดตายแล้ว
Then he ran straight forward toward the light as fast as he could. สุนัขจิ้ งจอกถอยหลังไปจนชนหัวช้างแล้วรวบรวมพละก�ำลังทั้ งหมดพุ ่งตัวสู่ช่องนั้น
He brought his thin body out through that hole, left only his hair stuck inside the elephant’s bottom. เพราะสุนัขจิ้ งจอกผอมโซ ขนจึงติดอยู่ที่ก้นของซากช้าง
He ran for awhile, then stopped. He found himself looked so pitiful. สุนัขจิ้ งจอกวิ่ งไปครู่หนึ่งแล้วหยุด ดูร่างไร้ขนชวนสังเวชพลางร�ำพึงว่า...
I almost die because of my own greed. This is the lesson I learned. I will not let this happen again. If I see a dead body, I will make sure I stay away from it. ทุกข์ของเราครั้งนี้ สิ่งอื่นมิได้ท�ำให้เลย แต่เพราะความโลภเป็นเหตุ เราจะไม่ยอมอยู่ใต้อ�ำนาจของความโลภอีกต่อไป ขึ้นชื่ อว่าซากช้าง เราจะไม่เข้าไปใกล้อีก
