TANZANIA TOUR OPERATORS DISH OUT 150 MILLION IN ANTI-POACHING WAR

SAFETY - The serious side of “lighter than air aviation”. Since we first s tarted o ut in 1989, we have taken care to source the best balloons from the most credible manufacturers. We work with suppliers Cameron Balloons, one of the oldest balloon manufacturers and Ultra magic, who have a long history of adventurous ballooning, to continually develop proprietary modifications that make our balloons stronger and safer. 1984

pilot in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, wanted to fly balloons over the Serengeti. Tony Pascoe had experience of running luxury camps and a safari business in East Africa and was excited by the prospect of such a venture. It was a good match and they began working out how to make their dream a reality. A SERENGETI BALLOON SAFARI IS A TRUE LIFETIME EXPERIENCE, FLOATING ABOVE THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS NATIONAL PARK, SEEING IT’S WONDERFUL SCENERY, FLORA AND FAUNA FROM A COMPLETELY UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE.

1989 – Ballooning was completely new to Tanzania, and it took five long years for Colin and Tony, together with their wives Sally and Marijka, to get all the permissions and licences in place. They finally placed an order for their first 8-passenger balloon from Cameron Balloons, the world’s leading balloon manufacturer, in the ‘acaciagreen’ and ‘savannah-gold’ of the Serengeti. 1991 – The first balloon took to the skies above the vast plains of the Serengeti. Those first years were tough as visitors to the Park were few; there was only one safari lodge and a handful of camps fed by infrequent flights to the park. It

Colin continued to refine the company’s operation, logistics and safety while Tony focussed on marketing the experience to tourism partners around the world.

Keeping safe & preparing to fly: 0615 - 0645hrs Your pilot takes you through the important safety briefing ahead of your flight as the sky begins to lighten and the crew inflates the balloon - an envelope of savannah gold and acacia green billowing into the cool morning, lit by the flames of the burners. You climb into the basket and prepare to lift into the dawn. Serengeti from the sky: 0645 – 0815hrs Each flight is a different journey dictated by the direction of the wind, where the sights and sounds rise from the ground to meet you. We know where we’ve started but

Serengeti - Your Experience we don’t know where we will return to earth. This is part of the adventure. Sometimes the basket will be gently brushing the tips of the grass and sometimes it will be climbing, climbing through the layers of air until you’re high enough to see the curve of the horizon, painted gold and pink by the early sun. Serengeti Balloon Safaris pilots not only have years of experience in harnessing the African wind, but are also your interpreters of the wild lives in the ebb and flow of the landscape below. Around an hour or so after you lift into the sky, the basket will return to the plains of the Serengeti. But it’s not over yet. From basket to bubbly: 0815 – 0830hrs “The Winds have welcomed you with softness. The Sun has blessed you with its warm hands….” The balloonist’s tradition is to toast the flight with sparkling wine (bubbly?). A short walk or drive from your landing spot will find you raising a

glass to your time in the skies. We then seek to take care of earthly concerns and whisk you off by safari car to our special Serengeti breakfast spot. Meeting hunger with plenty: 0830 – 0930hrs There is truly nothing to compare with breakfast served under the sweeping canopy of an acacia in the middle of the Serengeti plains. Tropical fruit, bread baked this morning and eggs cooked in the bush, all made more delicious by the location, and served on linen, bone china and Sheffield cutlery. Shoulder to shoulder with your fellow passengers, this is a time to soak in the exceptional flight you’ve just been a part of and absorb the moment. *Timings provided are a guideline only and may vary depending on conditions on the day. We aim to return every guest to their safari guide at the Seronera Visitor’s Centre at 0945hrs.

From your camp to the balloon: 0400 – 0530hrs Some things are worth getting up early for and this is certainly one of them. Rising before the birds and heading out in the silence of the pre-dawn towards the launch-site is all part of the anticipation. Perhaps one of the Serengeti’s more elusive inhabitants will be caught in the headlights on this nocturnal game drive.

Tanzania is a beautiful country. Its landscape and people make it a unique location to undertake any sport. Whether it is early morning training runs past giraffes and zebra to the shores of Lake Manyara or on the slopes on Mount Kilimanjaro, a football match against a local village team, horse riding expeditions in West Kilimanjaro or treks in the Ngorongoro Highlands or from the sun-kissed islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago to the gentle shores of Lake Victoria, the country contains immense cultural and natural wealth. 22

BALLOON FLIGHTS Flights by balloon take off as dawn breaks over the Serengeti, the perfect silence of the early morning plains broken only by the soft roar of the balloon. Far below, wildebeest scatter, looking everywhere but up at the silent visitor that floats over their world. Giraffe stand next to acacia trees, untroubled by the airborne visitors. After the thrill of landing, a champagne breakfast awaits, the air becoming warmer as the sun climbs in the sky and curious zebra look up from their grazing at the chink of cutlery in the still, warm bush.

DIVING Scuba diving the coral reefs off Tanzania’s coast at Zanzibar and Mafia Island offer some of the world’s finest scuba diving. Diving is possible all year round, although the Kusi Monsoon (strongest June-Sept) is accompanied by choppy seas and strong currents that make the more exposed reefs inaccessible. There can also be strong winds in December and January. Visibility is best from

November to march, before the long rains set in.

Just some of the areas to fly are the Usambara, the Rift valley and numerous hills around Mt. Meru. Microlight flights are now also available over Lake Manyara and the Great Rift Valley.

there are now several hotels and lodges in Tanzania and Zanzibar offering world class spa facilities to keep you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

GOLFING

DEEP SEA FISHING The water around Zanzibar and Pemba islands is considered by experts to offer some of the best fishing in the world, especially the Pemba Channel, between Zanzibar and Pemba islands, or around Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar. Big game fish include barracuda, kingfish, sailfish, billfish, wahoo, Dorado and blue marlin.

Although not a golfing destination, there are numerous golf courses throughout the country, including Dar es Salaam and Arusha. The local clubs are always very welcoming to any visitor who may wish to swing the odd club. Contact your tour operator for details as to the nearest golf course to where you might be staying. SPA TREATMENTS

PARAGLIDING & MICROLIGHT FLIGHTS There are some fabulous areas to paraglide. Very few people paraglide in Tanzania, therefore it is a novelty. Always seek permission from the local village, explain what you are doing and where you think you will land (it is illegal to fly over national parks).

BOAT SAFARIS The soft chug of an outboard engine, or the whispering flap of a canvas sail; boat safaris in Tanzania are a tranquil and relaxing way to watch wildlife. One of the best ways to see the Selous Game Reserve, up the huge muddy brown sweep of the Rufiji River, leopard whisking away from rocks at the boat’s approach. Sail into chimpanzee territory on a dhow, skimming over the Wami River in Saadani, surrounded by amazing birdlife, hippos and alligators.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBING AND HIKING For most climbers who visit Tanzania, the 5,869m Kilimanjaro is the top

prize. Mt Meru, another of Tanzania’s volcanic peaks, is also popular, with the varied animal and plant life to be found on its slopes a major draw. Meru is Africa’s fifth highest peak, with fabulous views of Mt Kilimanjaro and the Momela Lakes from the summit. The challenging ascent to the crater of Ol Donyo Lengai passes through some fantastic scenery, with panoramic

bush is a wonderful way to experience Africa intimately. Smells and sounds become distinct and varied, and smaller creatures gain significance. They are no longer simply rushed past in the race for the bigger game. When larger animals do appear, they are met at eye level; the land is truly shared between humans and animals. Safety is not an issue- all walks are accompanied by armed, experienced guides and game rangers. Walks can be from a few hours to a full day with picnic lunch. Many hotels and camps will offer guided walks in the national parks or community areas.

We believe that activities and sports is a language that helps peoples communicate throughout the world. Enjoy the activities and sporting of Tanzania and make your Holiday a life time enjoyable.

It lies in Rufiji River’s mouth in South Tanzania and it is the southernmost of three islands (incl. Pemba & Zanzibar). It is located off the coast of Tanzania; 25kms from

the mainland and 130kms from Dar es Salaam scattered over the Indian Ocean 21 km off the Rufiji River Delta in central Tanzania. The largest of a score of islands, atolls and tidal sandbars, Mafia itself is approximately 50 km long by 15km across, and is surrounded by a barrier reef teeming with marine life. Almost half the coastline of Mafia, some 822 square kms has been gazetted as a marine park by the government.

HISTORY AND CULTURE

Mafia has had a prominent place in the history of the East Coast of Africa and retains a traditional culture and friendly people with a population of 35,000 who depend on fishing and agriculture. Mafia was part of the sultanate of Kilwa and prospered as a settlement during Kilwa’s rise as an economic power. The island lies across the trade routes from the Gulf and has seen Egyptian, Omani, GrecoRoman, Chinese, Portuguese, English and German occupation.

BEACH AND BAY

Mafia Island is located in the magnificent southern circuit of Tanzania and Zanzibar and is part of a fascinating array of parks, reserves and Indian Ocean islands. The coral reefs, bays, sand bars, lagoons and beaches of the Mafia Archipelago are now part of the Mafia Island Marine Park, Tanzania’s first marine national park. Only a thousand visitors a year come here so it remains very much a traditional Swahili Coast destination and really can lay claim to the title of “unspoiled”. Mafia is the destination for those who truly wish to “get away from it all”. Even after two decades of a love affair with Mafia, we are still discovering new beaches, previously unrecorded birds, plants, fish and corals, new dive and snorkel sites and we continue developing new excursions to enjoy the “ISLAND LIFE”.

The Marine Park - over eight hundred square kilometres - ensures Mafia´s fragile biodiversity is preserved. Over four hundred and sixty species of fish and more than fifty genera of corals are here to be enjoyed by snorkeling and scuba diving. Excursions to coastal forests to walk and picnic, and excellent bird-watching in five different habitat types from the reef flats and shores to dry woodlands and coastal forests are part of our activities programme. Road safaris to other areas of Mafia complement the visitor’s experience and understanding of traditional village life. Kirongwe village is famous for its clay pots, Jimbo for its ukili mats, Mlola Forest, RasMbizi coconut plantation and Kitoni.

BIRD WATCHING

Bird watching in Mafia adds a very interesting dimension to a Tanzania wildlife safari, as the visitor will see many species of shorebird, including migrants such as the Crab Plover, and other species found in coastal thickets and mangroves that cannot be observed in the National Parks and Reserves. The visitor will see many spectacular rollers (Lilac-breasted) and beeeaters (White-cheeked) between Kilindoni and

Kinasi, and there are five species of sunbird in the Kinasi gardens. The black or white Dimorphic Heron is the common species at roosts in Chole Bay. The Kinasi Nature Trail has been designed with bird-watching very much in mind.

MAFIA ISLAND WILDLIFE

The sea around Mafia Island hosts an outstanding mosaic of tropical marine habitat including coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangroves, inter-tidal flats, reef flats, lagoons and coastal forest. These are nesting sites for Green and Hawksbill turtles while Leatherback, Olive Ridley and Loggerhead also occur in Mafia. Sharks, barracuda, grouper, needlefish, moray eels and triggerfish are also prominent in these waters. Also, Torpedoshaped and robust yellow-fin tuna, cobia manta rays and sting rays, swordfish, black marlins and wahoo are Mafia Island wildlife seen in the Marine Park. “Mafia Island is ideal for nature lovers as well and can be a real paradise for tourists, a wonderful destination to round off a wilderness safari or simply put your feet up and unwind! It is a unique and perfect destination as part of a safari package or simply a place to relax and get away from the daily, modern and busy world.”

ACTIVITIES

The main activities guests will be interested in while staying in Mafia Snorkeling, Scuba diving and swimming around the islets and beautiful coral shelves of Chole Bay Swim and snorkel with the amazing whale sharks (usually October-March) Turtlehatching season from July to September Sailing on traditional jahazis or outrigger ngalawas with local sailors Guided excursions to villages on the islands to see traditional village community life and economic activity, such as boat building and farming

GETTING TO

There are quite a number of scheduled flights flying into and out of Mafia every day. Auric Air, Coastal Aviation, Flight link and Safari Airlink. The flight by plane takes only 45 minutes from Dar es Salaam and 1 hour from Zanzibar or the Selous.

WHEN TO GO

Generally, Mafia is accessible all year round. Mafia has very good weather throughout the year. Virtually straddling the equator means that the island never gets cold and so the only thing to avoid is the rain. The best time to visit is during the dry season: June-August. The wet season is November-March as well as December- February.

Nestled along a natural harbour on the Indian Ocean with long stretches of sand-covered coastline, Dar Es Salaam guarantees some great experiences for beach lovers. While much of it is used for fishing or transport, there are miles upon miles of unspoiled beaches to choose from in Dar Es Salaam. It can be overwhelming and hard to know where to go at first. In no particular order, here are the top 12 beaches in Dar Es Salaam you can’t afford to miss.

D

ar Es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest and richest city and it has grown to become a prosperous commercial centre of the East African region. While Dar Es Salaam boasts one of the world’s finest natural harbours it remains a place of fascination with many reminders of its colourful past. Dhows still work its waters while dug-outs, piled with fish, bob by the harbour side. The city displays the many cultural influences of its history - Arab, Indian, German & British. There is an Asian district with its speciality shops, restaurants and Sikh, Muslim and Hindu temples. The German colonisation has left behind a Bavarian-style railway station, the Roman Catholic St Joseph’s Cathedral and the Lutheran Azania Front Church. The Botanical Gardens and Gymkhana Club are evidence of British occupation. Visitors to Dar Es Salaam are well catered for, with a choice of accommodation for all budgets, from backpacker hostels to fivestar hotels. For the business traveler, there are a number of hotels boasting world-class

For art lovers the Nyerere Cultural Centre exhibits arts and handicrafts and the National Museum is well worth a visit. Dar Es Salaam offers a vibrant nightlife scene with traditional Taarab music and clubs playing jazz, afro funk and hip hop. Dar Es Salaam has become a very important centre for International and regional conferences. The Julius Nyerere International

Conference Centre can host meetings and conferences for 1000 delegates. Scratch beyond the surface in Dar Es Salaam and you’ll find it’s a city rich in diversity and filled with character. THE BEACHES OF DAR ES SALAAM There is nothing as amazing as spending some time on a beautiful beach during a holiday or weekend break. Tanzania is a beautiful country blessed with an abundance of scenic beaches that sees locals and tourists thronging to. Dar Es Salaam’s beaches are often overshadowed by those of its offshore neighbour, Zanzibar, but prepare to be amazed. The white, fine sand beaches of Dar Es Salaam will take your breath away. COCO BEACH Also known as Oyster Bay Beach, featuring a lively atmosphere, Coco beach presents a perfect avenue for everyone to enjoy the ocean. Idyllic with stretches of almost clean sand, the popular beach on the east side of the Msasani peninsula is a favourite for both tourists and locals. It’s the first place most locals think

of when it comes to beach relaxation and unwinding; it’s usually overcrowded during public holidays. The beach features a wide range of restaurants, bars, food stalls and outdoor entertainment. SOUTH BEACH The south beach is also referred to as “Kingamboni” and it’s the standout choice of the many beaches in the city. It has a picture-perfect setting with powdery sand, pristine waters, and waves that are ideal for swimming. It is located off Kigamboni Road on the south coast of the city. If you are looking for the best of regular live music, the south beach provides a perfect option. Cold beer, sodas, cocktails and Delicious foods are served in the different food stalls on the beach. MBUDYA ISLAND BEACH Mbudya Island beach is one of the most untouched beaches in Tanzania. While the island is no secret to locals, many tourists have no idea that it exists. You can get to the island by taking a 25-minute ferry ride from White Sands Beach Resort. You can also take a 10-minute boat ride from

Msasani Slipway to the island. You can hole up on this piece of paradise and enjoy its seclusion and solitude. The island has no hotel or restaurant but you can enjoy some delicious grilled seafood freshly caught from the sea with a beer or soda in a banda. BONGOYO ISLAND BEACH This leisure island is a marine conservation area and it features beautiful beaches and a range of fun activities including snorkelling and swimming. You can get here by taking a boat from the Slipway shopping centre on the peninsula. The island is uninhabited so you can only spend a day here and go back to the city. When you get here, you can rent a banda – the little huts on the beach, relax and order your lunch. The beach combines a spectacular outlook, exceptional snorkelling conditions and walking opportunities along the stretches of the coastline. KUNDUCHI BEACH “Remarkable”, “postcardperfect”, “speechless” are some of the words used to describe Kunduchi Beach by tourists when

they step on its shores. The white sandy beach sits on the lap of the gorgeous Indian Ocean and it’s perfect for an ultimate getaway. If you feel like lazing around, sink into the soft sand and let in the breath-taking sunshine. BAHARI BEACH Bahari beach situated at the North of Dar es Salaam is a perfect private paradise with plenty of space, consistent waves and a soothing atmosphere that makes for a great relaxing spot throughout the year. A very quiet and calm place, Bahari is perfect to relax, read a book, see some local life, swim in the ocean and drink a few cocktails at the local beach bar. Popular activities to do in Bahari includes kitesurfing and a range of water sports. From this long beach with white sand, you get to order some fresh seafood from the fishing village located at the one end. AMANI BEACH Even though the beaches on the mainland coast are often neglected, Amani Beach is different. Both locals and expatriates flock to this beach for a relaxing weekend getaway. The beach is a perfect combination

of beautiful coastal landscapes and leisure activities off and on the water such as mountain biking, horse-riding, swimming, and surfing. Make some holiday memories at this beautiful stretch of extensive white beach. WHITE SANDS Clear blue water and a clean beach with nice sunbathing beds/ chairs are what characterises this white sandy beach. From white sands, there is an opportunity to travel to some small islands by boat. This pristine beach is a perfect place to enjoy the ocean, sun, play volleyball and eat good food. Situated in White Sands Hotel in the north of Dar es Salaam, the beach features a nice bar next to the pool and restaurant with a beautiful ocean view. MIKADI BEACH The name “Mikadi” originates from the Mikadi tree that thrives along the beautiful coastline of Tanzania. This is the kind of beach anyone would love to spend a relaxing weekend. The beach facilities come with a beautiful swimming pool, a bar restaurant and food stalls for the best of homemade burgers. The beach has secured its place among the best beaches in the

58

city for its mix of relaxing and fun experiences. KIPEPEO BEACH With the tropical turquoise water of the Indian Ocean, the Kipepeo beach amazes and entices everyone at all times. Located about 9 km from the city centre on the south coast, the sun-kissed beach is a year-round choice for those looking for some beach fun and adventures. We love it like that! Break away from the hustle and bustle of the city and spend a few minutes on this beach and you’ll feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Thanks to its peaceful atmosphere that works magic on people’s stress levels. MBEZI BEACH Mbezi Beach is located about 20 km north of the city centre, along Bagamoyo Road. The pristine beach is an untouched paradise, an idyllic coastal playground, and a great diving location. Mbezi beach is in close proximity to Karibu art gallery, some shops, an international school and some luxurious accommodation. With the variety of things to do and see, the beach is one of the most varied locations in the city, enjoyed by both locals and expatriates.

BAGAMOYO Another Popular day excursion from the beach resorts and once the last stop for slave and ivory caravans from the interior en route to Zanzibar. It was the capital of German East Africa and was one of the most important trading ports along the East African coast. Many of the famous European explorers such as Henry Morton Stanley, Speke and Burton started their journeys of exploration from Bagamoyo. So, which among these enchanting beaches in Dar Es Salaam are you going to check out first? Whether you choose to go scuba diving to explore the island’s colourful coral reefs or end up basking under the sun in the midst of natural beauty, these Dar Es Salaam beaches are the perfect locales for your next beach holiday. Pack your bags at once and explore all these marvellous shores with a joyous vacation in Dar Es Salaam. The magic of Dar Es Salaam Island is that it is a multifaceted destination, offering a unique blend of idyllic beaches, intriguing history, cultural diversity, tasty cuisine, exotic spices, and rich flora and fauna.

HOW TO SOLVE ISSUES AT YOUR OFFICE

Who You Can Turn to When You Can’t Count on HR (or Your Boss)

There are several different kinds of allies you can turn to. They can help you express your frustrations, come up with a thoughtful solution, and formulate a detailed and professional plan so that you’re prepared to confidently handle what might be an uncomfortable conversation. Remember, you don’t have to rely on just one ally—pick a combination of people that makes sense for you and your particular situation. People you can turn to, can be in two categories; Internal and external people. On the internal category, you can count on the following people: A Hiring Manager: Who else did you interview with to get your job besides your boss? Suggest meeting with them for a coffee date offsite—they’re the ones who most likely work closely with your manager and understand what makes them tick. They also probably know

60

Dar Life I NOVEMBER 2021

you and how you work, so they can tailor their responses accordingly. A Trusted Colleague: Do you have a relationship with another manager or colleague you trust and respect? This shouldn’t be your work best friend who you vent to at happy hour, but someone you have more of a professional relationship with. Tap this person for a confidential

meeting to ask for advice. What if the issue is just too complex for your non-HR allies to handle? It’s time to call in an

expert from the outside to coach you through it. This person may not be able to sit in the meeting with you, but they have the knowledge you need and can be your cheerleaders along the way. On The External category, you can count on the following people: A Third-Party HR Company: While your company may not have HR onsite, they may work with a third-party vendor to help with on-boarding, benefits, and payroll. Sometimes this even includes access to HR consultants who can help you navigate tricky issues. Check your benefits paperwork for a phone number you can call or a website you can check for resources. A Career Coach: Why not entrust someone who’s done this before, a lot? Many career coaches and consultants will create tailored strategies, example scripts, and go through mock conversations to make sure you’re equipped to handle any difficult situations at work. Armed with the support and guidance from your allies, it’s time to address that issue head on. Navigating workplace problems is never easy, and it’s even more difficult without HR, but by building a trusted team that can help you with various aspects of a tricky situation, you can handle just about anything.

hen your company doesn’t have a dedicated or reliable HR team (or any HR employees at all), dealing with certain workplace issues or questions can be intimidating—especially if you don’t have the best relationship with your boss or the issue in question is with your boss. This doesn’t mean you’re completely alone. All you need are allies to help guide and empower you to make the right call.

hen the colors mix on a fabric to form bold, vibrant designs, you get a stunning African print. Tanzanian designers are not letting that opportunity pass by, they use all their imagination to create masterpieces. They are claiming the fashion industry stage from the Swahili Fashion Week in Dar es Salaam to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in South Africa. Tanzanian designers are pushing the boundaries with a simple “Kitenge” leaving masterpieces in their wake. Every month Dar Life dedicates this section to young emerging and wellknown designers who want to create brands and use the fashion platform as a stepping stone towards achieving their dream. This month we met Angelina Mushala whose ideas in designing clothes and accessories are amazing, you must watch out! Angelina Mushala is a Tanzanian-American fashion designer. She is motivated to create unique and detailed designs. Her vision is to create looks with an African Asterisk. Miss Mushala started showcasing at non-for-profit organizations at the age of 18. In an effort to fulfill her vision, she founded her brand Ashubira Designs.

Through her brand, she has showcased in a number of fashion shows including; DC Fashion week, Atlantic city fashion week, Swahili fashion week, The Black Expo event at Wells College in New York, the end of the year African Student Association event at the University of Maryland, and The Ankara Night Annual Fashion Show at Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach.

`

I am motivated to create unique and detailed designs. I consider myself highly ambitious and willing to meet and exceed all requirements. What distinguishes my creations from other designers is my boldness to explore and use different pattern designs to create my work. My concept is derived from culture, personality, and elegance. The goal of my fashion career is to bring my ideas to life and give people the opportunity to resonate with my creativity. In the future, I would love to pursue a career in the fashion industry, specifically designing red carpet dresses and costumes for movies and music performing artists. I want my designs and outfits to exude my passion for my artistic expression. 62

oments of Capturing Moment OfJoy Joy A Sweet Lesson on Patience By NYC Taxi Driver

I

arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked. ‘Just a minute’, answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the fl oor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90’s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940’s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box fi lled with photos and glassware. ‘Would you carry my bag out to the car?’ she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness. ‘It’s nothing,’ I told her. ‘I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.’ ‘Oh, you’re such a good boy,’ she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, ‘Could you drive through downtown?’ ‘It’s not the shortest way,’ I answered quickly.’Oh, I don’t mind,’

64

Dar Life I NOVEMBER 2021

she said. ‘I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice.’ I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. ‘I don’t have any family left,’ she continued in a soft voice.’The doctor says I don’t have very long.’ I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. What route would you like me to take?’ I asked. For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building or corner, and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. As the fi rst hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, ‘I’m tired. Let’s go now’. We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair. ‘How much do I owe you?’ She asked, reaching into her purse. ‘Nothing,’

I said. ‘You have to make a living,’ she answered. ‘There are other passengers,’ I responded.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. ‘You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,’ she said. ‘Thank you.’ I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life… I didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life. We’re conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware – beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

The Magic World of

The Horse in Tanzania Noble Horses Shape Equestrian History in Tanzania By Nicole Walter

Tanzania typically conjures images of Maasai territory, the Serengeti and wildlife. Few people are aware of the existence of the pure Arabian horse in the precursor plains of the northern safari circuit. However, the presence of these horses is important to the future of horses in the country, as the current situation is dire.” 70

ot much fresh blood has been brought into Tanzania since the 19th century. There is a general problem of inbreeding,” says Carlos Da Silva, a horsemanship expert investing in the country and its people through the creation of a home for pure Arabian and thoroughbred horses

on Arusha University’s Campus. The relevance of Carlos Da Silva´s project, Chuo Cha Farasi, must be seen in the context of the fascinating story of the horse in Africa, and particularly in Tanzania. The English thoroughbred horse first set hoof onto the continent around 300

Incidentally, pure blood originates in the deserts of Arabia but North Africa has its own Arabian blood, the Barb, also enhancing thoroughbred bloodlines. However it was the thoroughbred rather than the Arabian horse that spread into East Africa. Kenya followed South Africa, and by 1903 the first horse race took place in Nairobi. The thoroughbred was also used for hunting until the advent of four wheel vehicles, sought after by the German army, in what was then Tanganyika

years ago. The first imports were recorded in South Africa, as colonial forces took a liking to racing and using the horses for transport and in battle. But far from being new on the continent, the thoroughbred horse was, in a way, actually returning home. Interestingly enough, the equine of the British Isles gained its nobility

through Arabian bloodlines from the Middle East and North Africa. Three pure Arabian stallions were brought to England back in the 17th and 18th centuries for crossbreeding. One may well wonder why Arab horses didn’t dominate the scene here, considering the large presence of Arab merchants starting hundreds

of years earlier, including Ibn Battuta in the 14th century. It is hard to imagine the Sultanate of Oman once ruling Zanzibar for several decades in the 19th century without its beloved Arabians. However, there is only sketchy evidence of horses at the time on the island. A peek at the history books reveals why. NOVEMBER 2021 I Dar Life

A happy horse performs willingly. It is about speaking the animal’s language, not using the whip. Horses show emotions, they cry, and equally react to a person’s energy,” explains Isaac.

There were indeed Arabians in Africa as early as 1,500 BC, but they only got as far south as Ethiopia. Across the Rift Valley, in Tse Tse fly territory, horses and Sudanese camels faced a pretty certain death from sleeping sickness. This threat remains real for any horse living in Africa today. The Brumby, a good-willed strong horse, is the perfect example. The Australian 72

government gifted its Tanzanian counterpart’s army hundreds of Brumbies for fieldwork because of its qualities. However, arriving unbroken they stayed wild and the majority succumbed to illnesses. As a tribute to this breed, some managed to develop resistance to indigenous diseases and still roam areas around Arusha and coastal regions. However, modern medicine suggests

there is no reason why horses shouldn’t thrive here today, as long as they are regularly vaccinated against all threats. Proof is the pure Arabian thriving in admittedly less disease-ridden South Africa. First imported in 1820, there are now over 10,000 Arabians in the country. Tanzania has the potential to set a similar pace in East Africa, Carlos Da Silva reckons.

Currently, there are around 500 purebred horses, plus 300 horses of other breeds living in the Arusha region alone. An impetus for breeding with fresh blood could easily double the numbers in Tanzania. Quality horses can become more than just a source of enjoyment for a few – they can also contribute to the economic development of the country.

As a horse whisperer, Da Silva learned his craft back in the famous Spanish Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. Since 2005 he has been sharing it here with local adolescents, who used to scrap a living on the streets. One of them was Isaac Lazaro, who quickly discovered his love and understanding for how the horse’s mind ticks. The stories of the lives of men and horses

being turned around plays itself out at Chuo Cha Farasi Tanzania Limited, founded by Carlos Da Silva and run by local boys. Among other activities, it is a licensed school to train horses and riders in the art of performing in harmony. As Carlos puts it, “We like to think of ourselves as an embassy of equestrian art in Tanzania.” Watching horses literally dancing to the rhythm of music

– live guitar evenings included – is a magical moment that experienced riders can’t resist. They bring their horses and join in. The Arabian horse is known to be particularly sensitive in this respect. The Bedouin often shared tents with this hotblooded yet communicative and inherently affectionate animal. Once trust and respect has been developed they will follow their NOVEMBER 2021 I Dar Life

owner, or rather friend, freely. It is a delight to see this animal galloping towards a person, rearing its front legs coming to a halt centimetres away, nudging gently to say hello. The beauty and intelligence of the Arabian, as well as its endurance in unforgiving deserts, have been admired for centuries. And today these same qualities allow the Arabian to adapt to the wilderness at Chuo Cha Farasi home and continue with history inducing fresh blood into other breeds. Even the company’s location itself is steeped in history.

Equestrian clinics take place in Tanzania with private horseowners eager to fine-tune their riding and care taking skills. Others check in difficult horses at the ranch for some rehab ‘a la horse whisperer’. Cooperation with government administration horses, such as at Chuo Cha Polizi, is also on the menu.

Now it is preparing to mix the line of the English thoroughbred’s stallions and the pure Arabian mares. The ranch has some goodies in the fridge – the semen (DNA) of a Calbar stallion – and hopes to cooperate with the government and private owners to solve the general problem of inbreeding in Tanzania. “We are happy to share our breeding experience, as well as the Arabian genes with others,” Carlos Da Silva confirms.

Tanzanian youth may well dream of an alternative profession, horsemanship, and assist their country in becoming an exporter of an animal loved for centuries. Based at the Arusha University Campus, by Momela road, it is flanked by Mt. Kilimanjaro on one side and Arusha National Park and Mt. Meru on the other side.

Nowadays peaceful plans develop at the horse ranch. It has already produced and sold its fair share of thoroughbred foals. Ngongongare Garden, home of Chuo Cha Farasi, is on the route to Mt. Meru, so the team will take clients out on hourly horse riding, or on overnight camp trips in the wilderness.
